We, the Lake Forest Community Association, are running this notice to correct the confusion that is resulting from the appropriation of the name “Lake Forest” by a nearby retirement facility currently under construction. That retirement facility is advertising and promoting itself as the “Lake Forest Village”. In fact, the “Lake Forest Village” is NOT PART OF and is NOT in any way ASSOCIATED with the Lake Forest subdivision, a subdivision that is well known for its amenities, landscaping and maintenance of its homes. The retirement facility is using the good name of the Lake Forest subdivision in their efforts to attract prospective residents. But, residents of the retirement facility will not have any access or use of the Lake Forest subdivision amenities. To protect our name, the Lake Forest Community Association has filed suit in Jefferson County Circuit Court seeking to require the owners of the retirement facility to discontinue any use of the “Lake Forest” name. Legal proceedings take time and so we want everyone to understand that the so-called “Lake Forest Village” has no connection to our Lake Forest subdivision and is using our “Lake Forest” name without our permission to promote their facility. LOCAL FUNK BAND HAS TIES TO EAST END Writer / Shannon Siders

On any given night, there are bands playing sets across bars, restaurants and music venues in Louisville, representing a wide array of genres. Shaun Wallace saw a hole in the market in the summer of 2011 and set out to fill a niche. From there, Soul Circus arose as the region’s premier groove band. “The bands in Louisville mostly play a very similar setlist,” Wallace says. “When we started out, I wanted to play more of the funk genre, groove music. Nobody else is playing that stuff in the city of Louisville at all, so it helps set us apart.”

Soul Circus grew from a five-piece band, eventually adding a horn section. Wallace serves as the frontman of the group on main vocals and also manages the business side of the band. His father, Steve “Pop” Wallace”, also does some vocals and plays guitar. The band’s current lineup is rounded out by Mike Vest (saxophone), Earl Dickerson (bass guitar and vocals), Tim Flowers (lead guitar), David Hoback (drums) and Felipe Hernandez (percussions). Soul Circus has averaged about three shows a week over the last six and a half years and even had a stretch where they played 15 shows in 15 days. With over 150 shows a JUNE 2018

year, and practices thrown on top of that, Soul Circus has had a lot of time to perfect their craft. “By the time we play a song three or four times, we’ve got it figured out,” says Wallace, who has an interesting approach to playing new songs. “I tell the guys to learn a song. They come out, play that song at a practice, and I say, ‘That was great, sounds just like the record, now throw that all away and play how you feel it.” Wallace’s aim is to hold true to the song but to change the way it is played. He says

the song is different each time it’s played because each band member puts their own spin on things. Soul Circus operates under the tagline “groove, funk, and grease” and plays a setlist highlighted by classics from Earth, Wind & Fire, Parliament-Funkadelic, Prince, and Ohio Players, as well as new takes on more contemporary artists like Bruno Mars. “I think the best way to gain traction is to play something nobody else is playing that we can make relevant for a current audience,” Wallace says.

“I never really played until 2008,” Wallace says. “The economy went bad, and dad and I were in construction together at the time. Money dried up and we both had big mortgages to pay.”

While the band channels funk and soul through their music, they have stayed away from wearing costumes on stage. “I want to be who we are, making the music we want to make,” says Wallace, who is often seen wearing jeans and Chucks at shows. “I didn’t want us to be a hokey band that dressed up. That’s just not us.” Soul Circus got its name from a 2005 album of the same name released by popular funk bass player Victor Wooten. Wallace’s start in music actually came a few years after the release of that album, following the 2008 financial crisis. While growing up in Jeffersontown, Wallace picked up a little guitar from his father, who was a traveling musician but never took it very seriously. JUNE 2018

and especially relish seeing the joy on the faces of the audience when they perform. “For me, it’s about the brotherhood that I have with my bandmates, and the fraternal brothers and sisters we have in the music community in Louisville,” Wallace says. “Being able to look out offstage and see a sea of people dancing and grooving to my music, smiling and having a great time, that is so rewarding and fulfilling for me.” Wallace has also been involved with the Musician’s Emergency Resource Foundation (MERF) over the last three years and was recently named president of the organization.

Louisville Golf Club Company Creates Handmade Clubs Writer / Tyrel Kessinger

In the nearly 45 years they’ve been in operation, the Louisville Golf Club Company has seen its share of ups and downs. But the company, created by Elmore Just in 1974, has also carved a niche for themselves throughout the world of golf. No one knows this better than Nancy Silk, unofficial company historian and an employee since the beginning. “Elmore Just founded the company after he got out of the army,” Silk says. “He worked at H&B for a year and then decided he could do this himself. So he started doing the business in his dad’s garage. He was one of five boys, all who were golfers, and all of his brothers have worked here. When he passed away in 2001 his brother Mike took over.”

Sadly, In January 2016, Mike passed as well and the company went up for sale. In January 2017, Jeremy Wright and his wife Yin-Yin, living in Houston at the time, bought the company, keeping the same onboard staff employed prior to his purchase. Wright, now living in Louisville, is, as you would suspect, an avid golfer and was already a long-time admirer of the Louisville Golf Club Company. “When the offer to buy the company came up I was highly interested,” Wright says. “It’s certainly a passion and I have also been a customer. For me, the opportunity was there and at the right time. I was in medicine before, I was a consultant for spinal reconstruction therapy, and I had come to the point where I was tired of that and ready for a change. And it worked out. We’re thankful we’re here.” JUNE 2018

While the bare bones mechanics of golf hasn’t changed since its invention, buyers’ habits certainly have. Where once the avid golfer might have custom sets made they eventually began to favor mass-produced sets available at stores such as Dick’s and Sports Academy. This development led to a major industry downturn for club makers like the Louisville Golf Club. Over time, the employee roll fell to a fraction of it’s original count over time and the amount of produced clubs fell dramatically. “We have four guys in the back now who have all been here between 40 and 44 years, and we have three of us up front,” Silk says. “Back in the mid-80s, we had 125 employees. We were making about 800 clubs a day then. Now, we’re probably doing a couple hundred a month.”

Elmore managed to keep the business afloat through the leaner years, at one point having to sell the company but regaining it a few years later. It was shortly thereafter when Mike became the president of the company. Ultimately, two things provided the company with the resources to stay in the club-making game. One, they were, and still are, quite known for their putters, custom made and custom inscribed with anything from wedding dates to business logos. The second was due to the rise of hickory only golf tournaments and its hardcore devotees.

“In 2003, Mike went to a hickory tournament and got bit by the hickory bug,” Silk says. “So he started buying hickory clubs and having them sent back where he would fix them up and make them playable. As he got into it, so did a lot of other people throughout the country and the world. Unless you were able to spend thousands of dollars on originals, it was a hard game to get clubs and play. So we started making replicas.” “Hickory saved the company,” Wright adds. “That’s what’s driving the business

right now.” Wright is, expectedly, an avid golfer and one who has also developed and maintained a devotion to the world of hickory golfing. The clubs at the Louisville Golf Club Company all begin as a block of wood, which is then cut and pared to a basic head shape. The same process is completed for the shaft. Through various workstations, the club head is more completely shaped, sanded, plated, painted and coated in shellac before being paired with its respective shaft. employs have the creation of their distinct hickory clubs down to an artistic science. What starts out as a simple block of wood eventually becomes a beautiful piece of art. Art that is destined to be dent and dinged on the golf course, but art nonetheless. Wright explains the process further: “We start with the raw persimmon wood, we rough turn it out and that’s when the process starts,” Wright says. “They get weighed and sorted and that way we know if they’re going to make drivers of 3 woods or 5 woods, whatever the block is going to be best utilized as. Then, based on our production needs that block will go onto one of our lines to be made. We carry probably 80 to 100 different models that any given block can be turned into.” And while the company business model and level of production has changed over the years, Wright has still found a way for it to grow.

“I kind of like to think of us as more of a craft brewery versus your big breweries like Budweiser or Coors,” Wright says. “We’re just a small craft golf company. It’s handmade, it’s very specialized, it’s tailormade to the individual. It’s a personal touch that we add that you can’t get in the big retail stores. “People love that,” Silk says proudly. “They feel as if they’ve designed their own clubs. And we love that. We love what we do and we see how happy our customers are. So that makes all this worthwhile.” “We’re a unique company,” Wright adds. “In the fact that we do everything from the modern perspective of persimmon. We don’t do metal woods. I don’t know of any other company that focuses on that. It’s everything from modern style down to the pre-1900s. So it’s a big portfolio of products we carry and it’s all kind of niche at this point. We’re the only company continuously turning wood golf heads.”

If James Brown was the hardest working man in show business Jeff Sherman might be the hardest working guitarist. He’s been a busy, in-demand guitar wizard since he was a teenager giving lessons to neighborhood kids. And between playing in rock ‘n’ roll bands of the day, teaching, working with the Louisville Orchestra, recording, going on tour with Marvin Gaye and a pair of shows with the infamous Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti, Sherman hasn’t marched to anything but a fast and steady drumbeat for nearly 57 years.

Sherman, a lifelong Louisville resident, considers another famous musician the remembers distinctly his first guitar. While Sherman’s gravitation to the six-string has its roots in rock ‘n’ roll, he eventually discovered his true love, jazz guitar, when a bandmate gave him two albums to listen to.

“One was by Howard Roberts, who later on would actually become one of my good friends, and one by Wes Montgomery,” Sherman says. “I put them on and I said ‘my gosh, I have no idea what that is or what they’re doing,’ but I knew I liked it and that it was good. Until then I’d never heard anything like that.” Not only did Sherman go on to learn jazz guitar, one could easily say the man has mastered it. Though he’ll be the first to admit that it didn’t happen overnight. “A lot of people come in and they seem to be really talented but you still have to fulfill the work to get that done and it was that way for me,” he says. “I was always good at math and science and athletics but not the guitar. I found it quite challenging. And I’ve had a number of students over the years like that too. You have to overcome all the physical aspects of playing the guitar just by working hard at it. That’s the only way you can overcome all of it.” In 2012 Sherman left his teaching position at Bellarmine where he taught guitar in myriad formats for 40 years. “I started teaching at Bellarmine in 1973. I taught guitar, electric guitar, jazz guitar, classical guitar, ensembles and improvisation. I designed a class called Jazz History and Racial Interaction which was a fun class. I was the director of jazz studies for a large portion of that period of time. In the meantime I was always playing steady jobs, playing anything that came along in the beginning.”

While he may not be an active professor anymore, Sherman still teaches full-time, with students anywhere from beginners to advanced pros, all seeking guidance from the master. Sherman has anywhere from 1215 students a day, giving lessons “strictly at the house, six days a week.” “Back then, I’d charge them a buck, or I’d go to people’s houses for two dollars,” he says. Sherman chuckles as he recalls a simpler time from his life. “It seemed like a lot at the time. But teaching was always another part of music to make a living from. Then I started to realize a couple things: You can learn the way people learn and you can apply that to yourself and that I liked being able to help people.” It’s quite obvious he enjoys talking shop about his musical deeds and friendships with jazz guitar legends of the past and

present. His homey basement studio, much like his past, is swamped in musical history. Pictures of Sherman and his friends playing and hanging out together consume the walls. Archtop hollowbody guitars, the overwhelmingly preferred jazz guitar model, rest comfortably in nearly every corner like old friends, waiting on the ready to be picked up and lovingly strummed. Each one has a story to tell, like his Wine Red Gibson Johnny Smith model that Gibson sent to replace a similar model which had been stolen from him when he’d turned his back for a matter of moments during a lesson several decades ago. He’s befriended and played with jazz guitar legends such as Attila Zoller, Howard Roberts and Tal Farlow, many of whom were inspirations in his journey to conquer the guitar. The man has led a full life that anyone, musician or not, would be wildly envious of. While the aforementioned names might not mean much to those who aren’t jazz guitar enthusiasts, Sherman does have a couple of brushes with more widely celebrated names. In the early 1970s he played a touring stint with soul singer Marvin Gaye. “I always loved Marvin’s music, and Motown was kind of the closest thing to jazz,” Sherman says. “Marvin was very nice, always very nice to me. The smallest audience we played for was maybe 10,000 people. They’d line the stage with police and women would start getting on top of each other’s shoulders to get on stage and

the police were throwing them over their shoulders to carry them back and then another cop would fill back in. “But maybe even bigger than playing with Marvin Gaye was playing a pair of shows with Pavarotti,” he adds. It’s certainly an experience that Sherman remembers fondly, beaming again as he reveals another of his war stories. “I played the two concerts at different times with Pavarotti and I was always right next to him on the podium,” he says. “And, you know, Pavarotti was a big guy. So when he would step down off the podium he had to put his hand on my shoulder. I was kind of his crutch to help him get off.” Even today, after a non-stop lifetime as a professional musician, Sherman isn’t looking to merge out of the fast lane anytime soon. “I’m at Varanese every night of the week for the last 10 years,” he says.

“It’s pretty astounding. I’ve played with the [Louisville] Orchestra for about 40 years. Right now, I’m doing educational things with them. We go to schools and have a program for 4th and 5th graders. We do between 10 and 20 schools, we go into the classrooms individually, we talk to the students about our instruments, about music, and I usually talk to them a little about the science of how sound is produced and about the history of jazz. Then we come back and do a concert. It’s great for the kids. We involve them in a lot

of different ways.” Born and raised in Louisville, Sherman is adamant that he is right where he belongs. “It’s a perfect place for music from my standpoint,” he says. “It’s a pretty sophisticated town. There’s a lot of work here. You can get anywhere in a half hour or less and not have to take subways or hassle with parking. And, you know, I hear a lot of musician’s complain about there not being much work here but I play 400 jobs a year.”

different and bring a completely new challenge,” Mathes says. “I love that.” For Mathes, his playing experience gives him helpful feedback for his students, knowing he’s been in their shoes. “My students knowing I’ve been where they makes me relatable,” Mathes says. “They can truly know I’ve been there.” Out of all that he admires about the sport, Mathes appreciates the social aspect of tennis the most. “I love interacting with people, seeing them improve, watching your students learn and hearing their feedback,” Mathes says. “It combines the physical and mental aspects more than most sports, and there’s a great joy in all of it.” To anyone with a hint of interest in tennis, Matthew wants you to know that tennis is a sport for life. “It doesn’t matter how old you are. You can start at any level and have leagues, teaching, the social aspect, fun and more for life,” Mathes says. According to Mathes, Plainview Tennis Center is trying to do something a bit different. CASA of the River Region is one of the most outstanding groups of individuals who are saving and changing children’s lives daily in Louisville. Non-profits often have trouble with advertising because the bulk of their resources, financial and otherwise, must be poured into helping those they aim to serve rather than promoting their organizations. I did not know who or what a CASA was or that such an esteemed volunteer opportunity was available to me but once I heard, I was in fully committed. Being a CASA is one of the most rewarding roles of my life and I am grateful I didn’t wait until retirement to get involved. You too may just be the next CASA and play your own role in changing a child’s life for the better. A CASA is a Court Appointed Special Advocate who volunteers within the family court system to advocate for the rights of abused and neglected children. Their motto is “I am for the child.” The CASA movement began in 1977 when Seattle Superior Court Judge David Soukup was concerned about making life-changing decisions regarding juveniles with insufficient information. He conceived the idea of citizen volunteers advocating for abused and neglected children in the courtroom. The first program spawned a network of nearly 1,000 CASA and guardian ad litem programs. CASA Programs focus on the recruitment, screening, education, training and support of more than 75,000 volunteers in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Louisville is served by CASA of the River Region and is one of the most successful chapters in the country. Unfortunately, Kentucky is also one of the states with the greatest need. The opiate epidemic and other substance abuse have created an environment where an increasing number of parents are unable to care for their children appropriately and the family court system is in constant need of volunteers. Over eighty percent

of child abuse and neglect cases involve substance abuse. In Jefferson County, social workers already carry a full caseload, and CASAs serve as an extra pair of eyes and ears on a case to help the judges stay informed on the status of their appointed children. IF a case changes hands between social workers, the CASA stays assigned to the child. A CASA is expected to see a case through from beginning to end. We do not close a case or remove ourselves from a case until there is resolution and permanent placement for the child. JUNE 2018

A CASA collects information for the judge assigned to the case but also serves as a stable person in that child’s life. CASAs come from varying backgrounds, including public service, education or ministry. CASAs may be parents, grandparents or those without children of their own. You never know who may be serving as a CASA, giving a child a voice, and changing lives. The one thing all CASAs have in common is that they care, they act in a child’s best interests, they enjoy serving and they’re committed.

A WARNING TO MIDDLETOWN AREA RESIDENTS My 87-year-old grandfather recently received a call from his grandson, Adam. Adam told him he had been in an accident, was in jail and would require $1,800 for bail. The conversation was charged with emotion. Adam was sobbing, hard to understand, but had pertinent information thatmade sense at the time. He begged his grandfather not to tell his parents and the pressure to get the situation under control before it got worse was evident. Grandpa spoke to a “lawyer”, received instructions to wire bail money and with heart pounding and a desire to help his grandson, he went immediately

down to the CVS to wire the money. The “lawyer” requested grandpas cell phone number and throughout the process grandpa received three more calls, he realized in hindsight, to rush the process along.

Perhaps most interesting, the employee at CVS said she sees this exact scenario two to three times per week. The scam focuses on the elderly and has believable information about the young person calling to seek help.

Fortunately, an employee at CVS stopped to help and recognized an all too familiar scene.
