As a high school junior, Mary Boggess took her first chemistry class and loved it. Around that same time, people started asking her what she wanted to study in college. Her mom was a pharmacy technician, and at the time there was a shortage of women pharmacists in the field so she began to consider it as a career. While in college, she got a pharmacy technician job at Kroger, and the experience solidified her decision. Boggess grew up in Murray, Kentucky, a

town that had an independent pharmacy since the 1970s. After working at Kroger, she took a position as a technician at this independent pharmacy.

Boggess desperately wanted to provide personalized service to her patients. She craved human connection that is so important in pharmacy work. After all, pharmacists can answer a lot of the same questions doctors can. If, say, a new parent is unsure of how to dose a baby’s over-thecounter medicine, they can call their local pharmacist. If a customer wonders if two medicines can mix, a pharmacist can help. At a chain pharmacy, however, they may be as inaccessible as a physician might be. For four and a half years, Boggess worked at one of the busiest retail pharmacies in Louisville. “We had a ton of patients with a ton of problems - insurance problems, medicine problems,” she says. “Doctors would write things wrong and we were constantly trying to problem solve on top of waiting on patients walking in nonstop, answering the phone and filling prescriptions. It was exhausting.” Boggess still tried to make time to counsel her patients and would go out into the store

to answer questions for over-the-counter patients. “I tried to squeeze in time with them, but then as soon as I got back to the pharmacy, I was so behind on things,” Boggess says. When the load gets to be too much, pharmacists can burn out. Boggess didn’t want to risk that happening to her, so when the opportunity presented itself to follow her dream, she went for it. A colleague from pharmacy school introduced her to a friend who had a small buying group that helped to open independent pharmacies. They take care of tasks like contracting, insurance, accounting and bookkeeping, and Boggess realized this would allow her to concentrate on her passion - tending to her patients.

“Their families have been super grateful we are here because we’ve essentially taken over their medication routines,” Boggess says. “We want to help make our patients’ lives easier.”

“This opened the door to allowing me to execute ideas my husband and I had had for so long,” Boggess says. In March of 2021, the pair opened Middletown Pharmacy & Wellness, serving Middletown and

Boggess was eager to bring back old-school pharmacy care including services that have died off with chains, such as free delivery and bubble packaging with medications for patients who take multiple medications. To help prevent patients from accidentally missing doses or taking too many pills, Boggess loads their medications into blister packs (similar to plastic weekly pill boxes). Both delivery and bubble packing are a huge convenience for patients, especially the elderly population. Many people in assisted living and senior living home communities are thrilled to see Middletown Pharmacy open.

week they were open, which brought in a ton of people right from the start. Boggess also sells over-the-counter products, local gift items and premium vitamin supplements. By chatting with patients, Boggess has gotten to know about their jobs, hobbies, favorite foods and, of course, health. They know all about her too, including the fact that she and Brandon have two daughters, Mila, 4 and Olivia, 1. Many also know that Brandon does collision work at Boggess Body and Paint, another local operation. Despite being small, Boggess still has to balance a lot at her pharmacy. For instance, she has to make sure she keeps her patients’ prescriptions filled so she sees what’s coming up on the horizon. If a patient is out of refills, she proactively faxes their doctor to get a refill so they are not out of medication at any point. She also makes sure she’s got drugs in stock for her patients, although as an independent owner she can’t keep a ton of inventory on her shelves.

“I like being my own boss and developing my own ideas, solutions and ways of doing things,” Boggess says. “I’m a critical thinker and like to come up with solutions myself.” Some of her patients see several doctors, which can become problematic if they struggle to keep their medications straight. Therefore, Boggess steps in if she sees that someone is perhaps on overlapping medications and could serve to consolidate them. “As a pharmacist you want to do as much as you can to keep up with your patients,” Boggess says. “Just putting in a little extra effort goes a long way.” Middletown Pharmacy & Wellness is located at 11601 Shelbyville Road, Suite A in Louisville. One of a Kind JILL WRIGHT IS LIVING HER BEST LIFE

Down syndrome occurs when the body produces an extra copy of chromosome 21. The CDC estimates that about 6,000 babies in the United States are born with Down syndrome each year. Jill’s mother Julie found out about Jill’s diagnosis when she was 20 weeks pregnant.

“I did a blood test and it came back as likely positive likely for Down syndrome,” Julie says. “I was shocked at the news. At that point in my life I didn’t have much of an understanding of Down syndrome. I called my husband Dan and we met at home. There were some tears because of the Writer / Renee Larr unknown. As the months went by, Jill and I had many tests done. They couldn’t hear her heartbeat on many occasions, so we would get an ultrasound almost every week. The great part about all that craziness was I got pictures of her.” The couple spent time meeting with doctors and researching Down syndrome. They wanted to provide Jill with the best tools possible after birth. She was born three weeks early on October 8, weighing in at 8 pounds, 2 ounces. Jill’s birth weight was higher than other babies with Down syndrome, which helped Jill’s survival. At six weeks old, Jill developed a fever and was admitted to the hospital. She was

sent home a week later only to suffer from congestive heart failure. The terrifying incident landed the Wright family back at the hospital. Jill’s doctor performed a heart catheterization, taking photos of the inside of her heart. This helped doctors develop a plan to repair her heart. Jill underwent open-heart surgery the following day, which lasted more than six hours.

Jill has performed the national anthem in ASL at various military and charity events, performed songs in ASL for a Linkin’ Bridge concert at the Brown Theatre, and for J.D. Shelburne benefitting Angels In Disguise. She even teaches ASL to 3- and 4-year-olds at Down Syndrome of Louisville. In 2019 Jill started working part time as the assistant to the theater department director at Mercy Academy. She auditioned for a role in the school’s production of “Godspell” and made quite the impression on Amanda Simmons, director of theater. She was cast in “Godspell” and later “Peter Pan.” Simmons loves Jill’s willingness to advocate for herself and take a chance on something new.

Jill spent much of her childhood dealing with different medical diagnoses while leading a reasonably normal life. She started therapy at Down Syndrome of Louisville at 19 days old, and group activities at 18 months old. Her family took her to and from therapy and doctor’s appointments for years. All the time spent shuttling Jill around led to a happy, healthy and thriving teenager. “One thing I love about Jill is her positivity,” Simmons says. “When she first started, she would talk to my students about what it “I started teaching Jill the basics of means to have Down syndrome and how American Sign Language when she was she wanted to be treated. The outgoing young adult loves to volunteer for local organizations like Down Syndrome of Louisville, Angels In Disguise, and Butterfly Backpacks, which provides necessities and encouraging notes to women at The Healing Place. “I just love helping other people,” Jill says. “It’s important to me to help anyone that needs it, and I have fun when I help them.” Her parents describe her as a very caring person who is always going out of her way for other people. It’s important to them that

she cares so much for others. Her father Dan knows many people don’t interact much with those with Down syndrome. They want people to see that the diagnosis of Down syndrome doesn’t make Jill or anyone else with the disease any different than anyone else. “We don’t call them disabilities,” Julie says. “We call them capabilities. People with Down syndrome are capable of having full lives. They have jobs, relationships, and are active in their communities just like anyone else.” Jill has modeled for many print advertisements and brochures. She’s played softball, basketball, cheerleading and golf in the Special Olympics with Dan as her proud softball coach. Her involvement in these various endeavors led to Jill being chosen as the Down Syndrome of Louisville 2020 Citizen of the Year.

“That was exciting for me,” Jill says. “It was

an honor to be selected.” She’s even met former President Jimmy Carter twice. The first time was at Sam’s Club at a book signing. The second was at his 90th birthday celebration in Plains, Georgia. Jill has lofty goals for her future. She will participate in the College Connections program at Bellarmine University in the fall. The new program was designed in conjunction with Down Syndrome of Louisville. Jill was quickly selected as one of two students to participate. “Jill and another student will be coming to campus twice a week to take up to two classes on campus per semester,” says Abigail Walsh, interim director for continuing education. “In addition, they will participate in social and community building activities while they’re here as well. It’s designed to give them the college experience.”

Jill is currently deciding what she’d like to study, and is interested in many areas of education. “I want to take classes in communication so I can keep presenting,” Jill says. “I’m interested in photography, technology, theater and maybe graphic design.” Jill and her family are incredibly appreciative of Down Syndrome of Louisville for their innovative programming, advocacy and support. “We’re just so thankful to them for all the help throughout the years,” Julie says. “We’re so lucky to have such a wonderful resource so close to home for Jill because many other families don’t have something similar in their area.” For more information on Down Syndrome of Louisville, visit dsoflou.org.

Piper Madison has had her heart set on becoming a pop star for most of her 19 years. It’s no pie-in-the-sky dream, as the singer has a couple of self-produced albums to her credit and a large social media following, and was also voted by LEO Weekly readers as the Best Band/Musician Performing Original Music. While her career could be considered a full family enterprise, Madison thinks of herself as a do-it-yourself artist. The family includes her Louisville-based parents, Patrick and Rhonda Keesee, and younger sister Skylar. She produces her own music and performs as a solo artist, having mastered the use of a device called a looper that allows her to add the sounds of instruments while performing live.

“I think of myself as a DIY indie artist,” she said. “I’m a musician but also an entrepreneur, and I’ve got a lot of other things I’m trying to incorporate.” Madison’s start in show business began at an early age, and she was so promising as an actress and performer that the family decided to move to Los Angeles when she was just 9 years old. They came back to Louisville during the summers, but she and Skylar think of L.A. as the place they spent those formative years. Both girls had success landing gigs for modeling and acting. Madison’s big break came at age 13 when she landed the part of Zelphaba in the Nickelodeon series “100 Things to Do Before High School.” She released her debut album, “Who’s Running Your Mind,” in 2019 at the age of 16. Her single from that record, “Little Bit 14 / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com

of Rain,” reached number 14 on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs weekly list. Her second album, “How Do I Love?,” was released last fall, coinciding with her family’s move back to Louisville - a direct result of the pandemic. She said her music was a great way to keep her creativity going in those L.A. years, especially between acting gigs. “I actually started writing and picking up music in between auditions because the acting was kind of crazy, up and down and unpredictable, so in down times I picked up music,” she says. She soon found that music was the creative outlet she wanted to pursue. With the release of “How Do I Love?,” she started getting airplay on local station WFPK, received the LEO Weekly Award, and had some gigs at local outlets including the Blind Squirrel. Her family invested in

marketing, including billboards, to boost her numbers on sites like Spotify. An album release party in October was held at Black Rabbit in St. Matthews. Madison seems to have a rare gift for business as well. to take over some space previously used as an attic to create a photo studio. Then she immediately posted several creative photographs. While Madison says her main goal is to eventually become a touring act and play on the road, she’s still 19 and hasn’t yet gotten a college degree. There’s an offer to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, but she says her future is more likely to include undergraduate studies at Centre College in Danville, quite a bit closer to home and her family. When describing her second album last fall, she said something about it that still rings true, even as she’s working on her next music project: “This is kind of a continuation of my mental, emotional and spiritual journey that I started with that first album.” It will be interesting to see where Madison’s journey takes her.

Through the last few years, there has been a lot of change within StageOne. With pandemic-related shutdowns, StageOne leaders, like everyone else, had to determine next steps. Andrew Harris, producing artistic director for StageOne, was

“The pandemic forced us to shift from putting on strong, professional work for young audiences here, locally, to having this magical opportunity to put our theater in a digital context and look at the tools we have to reach our audiences in new and different ways,” Chambers says. StageOne typically puts on four main stage productions each year at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. This year

they featured “Don’t Tell Me I Can’t Fly” and “Dragons Love Tacos.” “Don’t Tell Me I Can’t Fly” was about to open when COVID-19 cases spiked, so they filmed it and worked with the local school corporation to get the production into every Jefferson County Public Schools elementary classroom for students to see. They also built educational materials around it, because one of StageOne’s main focuses is on educating young people, from elementary through high school. For younger grades, that might include a team coming out to perform a book for students, whereas for high schools it may involve a teacher calling Chambers and requesting a service based on the school’s budget.

They also partner with the library system to perform stories at libraries throughout the city. “It’s mostly about the actors reading and acting out what’s happening within the book, and then finding places where the young people in the audience can build the environment around it,” Chambers says. “For instance, if they’re reading ‘Where the Wild Things Are,’ the performers would invite the audience to show their terrible teeth to create the forest of trees. It’s a more exciting way to read stories.” They intersperse big shows with smaller, community-engaged performances and interactions. “We’re always trying to stick our fingers into whatever pies we are able to,” Chambers says. “What’s great is that there are so many art makers and opportunities

throughout the city. We are always in each other’s inboxes asking, ‘Are you doing this thing?’ It’s very collaborative.” Before Chambers joined the staff at StageOne, she worked for a regional theater in Chicago that catered to adults. She got frustrated in that space because she had come from a community and a master’s program engaged with making art specifically for young audiences. “I didn’t know how much I’d miss that space,” Chambers says. “Being back in a [theater for young adults] space has been so exciting.” She notes that when they look out at the audience of young people for a main stage play, they are not only seeing people who want to tell stories up on stage, but also the spectrum of young people who are going to tell stories in a variety of ways. Though she wasn’t welcomed with open arms initially (remember, these are teenagers), as time went on, Chambers got them to engage. “My goal was to, on the fourth day, get the students to stand up and perform in front of the whole group to share a one-minute story of what home was to them,” Chambers says. “There’s always a moment in rehearsals in an educational setting where you give the instructions and think, ‘This is about to fail,’ but every single person spoke.”

The new Trager Family Jewish Community Center ( JCC) is opening this spring. The $43 million facility is located behind the current facility on Dutchmans Lane. It includes a year-round indoor aquatics facility, a modern, 37,000-square-foot fitness space offering 75-plus weekly group fitness classes, 50-plus cardio machines, a new performance room, a learning center for preschool children, and a multipurpose auditorium space that will serve as the new home of CenterStage.

The Trager family members have been longtime supporters of the Jewish community in Louisville and the new facility. The Trager family doubled their initial pledge of $1.5 million to $3 million, earmarked for construction of the new building. The new facility was designed to embody the Jewish community’s values. It was designed with purposeful spaces that reflect Jewish culture and welcome every person regardless of faith. The JCC partnered with architectural firm GBBN to create the new building. On March 10, Governor Andy Beshear attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony to dedicate the new building. “The ribbon cutting was wonderful,” Kwasny says. “Having the governor there

signified how important this project is to the whole community. We want to serve the Jewish community and the general public alike. We wanted to make sure this was a place where everyone felt welcome.” The fitness center is more than just a place for members to work out, Kwasny says. “We want to be a multifaceted center,” she says. “We want to provide fitness opportunities, aquatics opportunities, arts programming and preschool. We want to be a one-stop shop for families.” The fitness center includes a dedicated performance room with TRX straps, squat racks, barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls and more. The center is equipped with new Peloton bikes, 45’ of indoor turf for strength training and conditioning, and an elevated indoor track. In-house services include personal training, massage services, physical therapy and nutrition coaching.

The kids are so excited to get in there.” Jump says the CenterStage board has worked tirelessly to plan the space out so they can showcase the programming. She says they poured over concerns with tech elements, lighting and sound, and audience experience, to ensure the best use of the space. The JCC’s Active Adults programming provides year-round nutrition, fitness, recreation, education and cultural activities that promote health, social connection and independent living for active and senior adults.

Even better, frame it with people going back to the office, this would be a great new addition for him to hang up on the wall.

fter a two-year COVID hiatus, the Lyndon Summer Festival is back. Mark your calendars for Friday, June 17 and Saturday, June 18, 2022. Bring your kids, friends and neighbors, and come on out for a long-awaited outdoor treat.

The festival will feature vendor booths (commercial, arts and crafts, nonprofit and educational). Food vendors will provide a wide array of gastronomic delights and the beer garden will be a great place for weary adults to rest. The youngsters and young at heart will delight in the festival midway. They can ride, slide and bounce until
