University in Midway, Kentucky, graduating with a degree in education and a certification in math and English. She was offered a job immediately after graduation with Harrison County Schools in Cynthiana, Kentucky. She taught seventhand eighth-grade English. As luck would have it, during her second semester there she received a call from a woman who had been her high school guidance counselor and was now the principal at South Oldham Middle School. The principal told Orman they had an opening for an English teacher and wanted her to apply. Orman did and was hired to teach seventh- and eighthgrade English. She stayed for five years.

SCHOOL PRIDE

Orman always had a desire to find a job with JCPS.

“I felt like you could put a cardboard cutout up in front of the classroom in Oldham County and kids would still be successful,” she says. “I felt like they had a lot of what they needed, and it didn’t feel like, to me, such as the Panama Canal Zone and Atlanta, what teaching would really be.” Georgia. Once he retired, the family moved to Kentucky. She had heard a teaching position was

DR. HEATHER ORMAN SETTLING IN AS EASTERN HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

Writer / Julie Engelhardt Photography Provided

Like so many schools across the country, Eastern High School had a rough time last year due to the pandemic. Their in-person classes shut down, students struggled with virtual learning, programs like sports and band ceased, and the seniors of the class of 2020 were not able to experience certain rites of passage such as their senior prom and an in-person graduation. Yet, a shining light emerged at the end of this very dark tunnel in the form of a new principal, Dr. Heather Orman. Although Orman never attended Eastern, she has family ties to the school and has been employed in the past at Jefferson County Public Schools ( JCPS). “My dad, my uncle and my aunt all attended Eastern,” she says. “I even have a picture in my office of my dad in the Eastern band at the inauguration for President Eisenhower. My dad played clarinet.” Orman was born in Maine, but her family traveled quite a bit due to her father being in the Marines. They lived in various places

“We settled in Pewee Valley when we came back, and I attended Oldham County High School,” she says. “I graduated in 1989 and I was in the last class before they started dividing the high school into separate schools.” Orman was an athlete in high school, playing basketball all four years. “We had a really good run of it and we went to the state tournament for three of the four years I was there,” says Orman, who is 6’2” and played center. After graduation, Orman attended Kentucky Wesleyan College on an athletic scholarship for two years, but soon made the choice to take some time off. “I needed a break because I’d played sports my whole career and it was just a lot,” she explains. “I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life.” She ended up transferring to Midway 6 / MIDDLETOWN MAGAZINE / JULY 2021 / TownePost.com

available at Meyzeek Middle School so she applied for it, and was offered the job. She stayed there for 13 years.

While she was teaching, Orman continued her education and received her principal certification, at age 28, from Indiana University Southeast. At that time, she said she always felt that being a school leader wasn’t that important. “I thought, when I was a teacher, that teaching was where the meat of the work happened,” she says. When she was 40, Orman decided to take the next step and began working on her doctorate. She received a doctorate in education and social change from Bellarmine University. After receiving her doctorate, Orman began to seriously consider becoming a principal. “I started to look at the research, and just based on my own life experience I started thinking about how much leaders have impacted me, even going back to my days

missed, and maybe I knew it but didn’t appreciate until I was out of JCPS, is the quality of people that work in this district,” she says. “You have very high-quality teachers, very high-quality administrators at all levels, very intelligent people. As I was working up there I loved it, but I missed everything that was great about JCPS. I missed the camaraderie, and my whole support structure was here. Over time I started thinking more about long term, and determined that this is where I want to be.”

in athletics and the coaches who have influenced me,” she says. “Influence can come in many forms, positive and not positive, but thinking over the course of my career, I began to understand how those experiences have really shaped who I had become as an educator.” Orman applied for an assistant principal position at Seneca High School, yet the job went to another applicant who already had experience as an assistant. She was offered a job as a literacy specialist at the school, which she accepted, but an assistant principal position eventually opened and she got the job, staying at Seneca for four years.

As it happened, the position for principal at Eastern opened in the summer of 2020, yet Orman says she didn’t apply for the job immediately. “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to jump over,” she explains. “The job was posted again during Thanksgiving, possibly because they hadn’t found the right candidate.”

Her first full-fledged job as a principal finally came about when she was hired by Newport High School in 2018, but she admits that she longed to be back working for JCPS.

there is good leadership in the district.

Her vision centers on improving the school’s accountability status to reach Kentucky’s five-star rating, and to attain Blue Ribbon status.

When the students arrived back on campus this past April, Orman made it her priority to let the teachers know that the kids and their mental health were highly important.

“I looked at the data to determine what’s been going on, and part of that is from public data taken from a comprehensive school survey,” she says. “You could see that the parents and students were largely dissatisfied, and that some of that dissatisfaction had to do with climate and culture.”

“We wanted to go back into that normalcy too quickly, and it doesn’t work that way,” she says. “We did a lot with providing socialemotional activities that the teachers could do with the kids, and we did a daily check-in with our mental health counselor.”

Orman eventually made the decision to apply, going through a rigorous interview process. away in 1979, yet his memory lives on as the theater in Central Park has been dedicated to him and is known as the C. Douglas Ramey Amphitheater. According to Matt Wallace, Kentucky Shakespeare’s producing artistic director, the idea to present the Shakespearian plays began in 1960 when the St. James Court Art Show invited the company to perform scenes from the comedy “Much Ado About Nothing.” Shakespeare Festival in Central Park - 1960s Writer / Julie Engelhardt Photography / Provided

Shakespeare organization that makes its home in Old Louisville’s Central Park.

William Shakespeare is likely familiar to all of us as we may have studied his work in school, recited a monologue from or performed in one of his plays, or had the opportunity to see a stage performance of his work.

Kentucky Shakespeare began as the Carriage House Players back in 1949 as a scene study group founded by C. Douglas Ramey. Ramey hailed from Johnson County, Kentucky, moving to Louisville as a government worker during the Depression. He became a well-respected actor, director Our state is fortunate to have a company of and producer, bringing theater to life for actors, costumers, technicians, directors and three decades in our area. Besides founding producers who bring the works of the Bard the Carriage House Players, Ramey to life every year, free to the public. They organized the Paintsville Little Theater and are members of the long-running Kentucky the Clarksville Little Theater. He passed 10 / JULY 2021

“That was the seed for free Shakespeare in the Park,” Wallace says. “Then in the following year, Ramey produced a threeshow season and called it a festival, which was the beginning of what patrons can see today. This is our 61st year. We believe Shakespeare belongs to everyone, not just those who can afford a ticket. For us it’s all about removing barriers between people and art, in many different ways.” There are “three buckets” to what the company presents. This includes their educational programs for students ages three and older, their community outreach, and their free Shakespeare in the Park presentations. In 2019, prior to the pandemic and having

restrictions placed upon large gatherings, Kentucky Shakespeare served 71,000 students in 97 counties across the region, bringing their actors to schools for inperson performances. “We’re the most comprehensive in-school arts education provider in Kentucky,” Wallace says. Once the pandemic hit, the company switched their educational programs to virtual and digital formats. Although they didn’t have the opportunity to do live performances, they were still able to serve 40,000 students in 42 counties in 2020. The company’s community outreach programs are quite inspiring. They have their nationally recognized Shakespeare with Veterans program, their Shakespeare Behind Bars program, Survivorship

Shakespeare, and their Touring Arts for Immigrants and Refugees. The Shakespeare with Veterans program is in its fifth year, with Kentucky Shakespeare partnering with the Louisville Veterans Center. “Amy Attaway, our Associate Artistic Director, is the facilitator of that program,” Wallace says. “They meet weekly, and after a year, they present their work on our stage in the park. It’s a band of brothers and sisters that meet as a support group, a group where they learn about themselves and connect with others.” The program received national and international attention as it was featured on BBC Worldwide and in the Huffington Post. “Shakespeare Behind Bars is actually a very unique program celebrating twenty-five years at the Luther Luckett Correctional

The program not about the inmates being actors, Wallace says. It’s more of a therapeutic program taking in accountability and ultimately reducing recidivism. Survivorship Shakespeare is a program the company started a few years ago to work with those impacted by cancer. They began by partnering with Norton Cancer Institute and now it’s a summer program they offer through Gilda’s Club. Their Touring Arts for Immigrants and Refugees program began as a non-verbal clown show based on a Shakespeare play. “This year we actually pivoted and took two of our popular programs for young students, Bard Buddies and Fairy Tales from Around the World, and we adapted them to Spanish. We provide them for places such as

In the spirit of reaching out to a wide number of communities, Kentucky Shakespeare presents a springtime tour each year of one of their plays in an abridged format. This past spring, from April 17 to May 28, the company performed a ninetyminute version of ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ These free performances ‘pop up’ at 25 parks in the Kentuckiana area, and beyond. Hodgenville. Once summer rolls around, the company heads ‘home’ to begin their summer festival season at Central Park. The free Festival began on June 16, presenting a live stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning film ‘Shakespeare in Love’ running through July 31. The company will also perform ‘Henry V’ from July 8 through August 1, and their Globe Players, a professional training program for high school students, will perform ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream,’ August 4-8. Other summer performances include ‘Late Night Shakes,’ on select Saturday evenings,

presented by the Louisville Improvisers, and from August 11-15, patrons will be treated to ‘Shakespeare in Dance,’ presented by the Louisville Ballet. Although last year was different for the organization, they came up with creative ways to continue to perform. During the fall the company holds ticketed events as part of their fundraising efforts, and last year they presented what they called ‘Shakespeare in the Parking Lot.” “It was absolutely incredible,” Kentucky Shakespeare Board of Directors Chairwoman Elizabeth Cherry Siebert says. “It was probably one of my favorite

theater experiences in my life. Matt Wallace and his team came up with this concept to do a drive-in performance, but have it also be a radio program. You were able to tune in through your radio to the actors’ microphones, and they built an elevated stage in the parking lot across from the zoo, and cars were able to park in a circle. You were able to hear the actors, sound effects and music through your car radio. People in their cars were socially distanced in their vehicles. It was immersive and fabulous. It was a way to feel alive again. It was just a wonderful experience.” Siebert is excited for what’s on the horizon for Kentucky Shakespeare’s future. One of their current projects is to open their new headquarters, located on Myrtle Street, just a few houses away from Central Park. “Prior to this new location we were housed in ArtSpace, a Fund for the Arts- owned building, next to Brown Theater, and we were there for years,” she says. “We’d been

looking for a new home for quite a while, and then this property came available. We’re renting the facility but we’re renovating the interior for our purposes. It will have our offices, and directly adjacent to that is a storage house where we have our props and costumes. SCOUT’S HONOR LUKE MCARTHUR UNDERTAKES COMMUNITY PROJECT FOR EAGLE SCOUT RANK

Writer / Carrie Vittitoe Photography Provided

Sometimes teenagers and young adults get grief from older generations for being reckless, whiny or irresponsible. The reality, however, is that there are plenty of young people well on their way to making the world a better place. One of those young people is Luke McArthur, a Trinity High School student who created and completed a community donation project in the spring of 2021 in order to earn his Eagle Scout rank. The Eagle Scout rank has been a significant milestone for Boy Scouts since 1912 and involves several steps. Young people seeking this rank have to be actively involved in scouting and have earned 21 merit badges, including first aid, emergency preparedness, camping, personal management and citizenship in the nation. The approximately

50,000 young people who achieve this rank every year go through the same steps and workbook, ensuring that they have a strong and achievable proposal, collect data on their project, and then evaluate the project after it is completed. Their final step is to go before a board of review to defend or explain their project. Luke has long been involved with scouting, and is affiliated with St. Edward Church Troop 175. “I was in Cub Scouts since first grade, and I just kept staying with it,” he says. “In sixth grade we switched to Boy Scouts.” For young people who stay in scouting, they often find that they have a unique group of friends they don’t see every day at school or in their neighborhoods. Luke has two friends through Scouts that he has known since he first became involved as a young boy. In addition to friendships, the experiences a person can have through scouting can be fun. 14 / JULY 2021

Some of these are typical camping or hiking adventures, but others are more extensive. One of Luke’s experiences was Sea Base, an aquatics program in the Florida Keys. “We went on that freshman year going into sophomore year, in the summer,” he says. “We stayed on an island for five days and had to bring all the food and water that we had.” He slept in a hammock due to the heat and didn’t shower, which he says was one of the worst parts. Being in scouting for such a long time made Luke think he should pursue an Eagle Scout rank. It was a goal he set for himself. Along with his parents, Holly and David, he brainstormed some ideas for his project. “We started reaching out to some people,” he says. “A friend’s dad works on the volunteer board at Home of the Innocents, and he helped us get contact with Brendon’s Duffels.” Brendon’s Duffels of Hope is an

organization associated with the Brendon P. Bachelor Foundation that provides duffel bags to children removed from their homes who enter into foster care. The bags are stuffed with items that children may need, including toiletries, clothing and toys. The organization provides the duffels, and Luke’s project involved collecting items to fill them. Often when people think of Eagle Scout projects, they might think of construction-type endeavors such as playgrounds or landscaping, but there are a wide range of possibilities.

There was a long list of items that people could donate to Luke’s Eagle Scout project, including lotion, body wash, chapstick, earbuds, shower caps, underwear, socks, towels, blankets and journals. “The goal was 100 to 125 bags,” Luke says. “We ended up doing 156.” Plus, he had surplus items, especially toothpaste, that were donated as well. Lots of parishioners donated items and left them at the churches, but Luke also

Once Luke decided on collecting items to fill the duffel bags, he completed his proposal paperwork and got it approved. After that, he spent a lot of time emailing people. He had to get information into the church bulletin to ask St. Edward parishioners if they would like to participate. Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Thomas More parishioners were also involved because of the McArthur family’s relationship with Father Troy Overton, who used to be the priest at St. Edward.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, he knew some people might not want to go out and shop at stores. The Wish List allowed people to support his project without leaving their homes. As items came in, Luke put them all in the family’s basement. “We did have a ping-pong table there, but we put it up for the project,” he says. “It got

We had to track any changes we made.” Luke also spent a lot of time counting items so that he could see what items needed to be purchased.

“Luke did a good job of keeping in touch with his contact at Home of the Innocents,” David says. “She was able to direct us to what their needs were.” David picked up the duffel bags for Luke and brought them home, and Luke, with support from his family and friends, moved everything to the St. Edward cafeteria. “That’s where we ended up packing them,” Luke says. “We had people from my troop help pack the bags.” It took several hours to pack everything before the duffels were delivered to Home of the Innocents.

to get permission to show up at church and collect. It takes a lot more time.” He also had to learn about delegating roles and responsibilities to other people, which is an essential part of any leadership position. David says he saw changes take place in his son. “I think he realized, with the number of things coming in, he could only do so much with his own hands,” David says. “It’s through that leadership that you can inspire others. With more help, you can do more things. I think he grasped that over the months, which was great to see.”

While the point of the Eagle Scout rank is to help others, there is a lot of personal growth Luke still has to complete his Eagle Scout that happens to the individuals who design review, for which he goes before a panel of three individuals to explain his project, and and implement projects. he plans to wrap that up before he turns 18. “I learned a lot about communication,” Luke The Eagle Scout rank will be an honor he carries for the rest of his life. says. “You have to email a lot of people just

SEEKING MASTERY

HOW YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS IMPACTS PERFORMANCE

PERFORMANCE VERSUS MASTERY

Writer / Dr. Dave Schroerlucke Photography Provided

I hope I’m not being too personal here, but what’s your orientation? Your achievement orientation, also called goal orientation or motivational style, refers to the way you conceptualize success and failure. How do you define success? Winning a championship? Setting a personal best? Learning something new? Do you think of achievement in terms of acquiring new skills, or in terms of doing better than others and gaining approval? Your response to this question says a lot about your source of motivation and tolerance for risk. In this article I distinguish between performance orientation and mastery orientation, and investigate how each of these orientations impacts performance.

Achievement orientation is most commonly divided into two main types - performance orientation and mastery orientation. Individuals with a performance orientation (also called competitive orientation or ego orientation) view achievement in interpersonal terms and strive to demonstrate superiority over others who are viewed as the opposition. Success is measured in terms of outperforming peers, and failures are seen as signs of incompetence that convey an undesirable loss of social status. In contrast, those with a mastery orientation (also called learning orientation or task orientation) view achievement in intrapersonal terms and strive to develop task mastery over time as evidenced by improvement relative to one’s own past performance. Success is measured in terms of meeting or exceeding personal goals. Failures are regarded as a normal part of the learning process, and important sources of information on how to improve. The table here offers a side-by-side comparison of the key distinguishing features:

The simplest, most concise way of explaining the difference is as follows: Those with a mastery orientation seek to improve their competence, while those with a performance orientation seek to prove their competence.

WEIGHING THE PROS AND CONS Research in both sport and educational psychology has repeatedly demonstrated that the performance-mastery dichotomy helps

predict important differences with respect to how individuals experience training and competition, as well as how they respond to performance challenges and competitive stress. Individuals with a mastery orientation tend to display greater intrinsic motivation and task interest, positive mood and affective states, increased effort and persistence in the face of difficulty, higher frequency and intensity of flow experiences (being in the zone), and better overall performance. Those with a performance orientation, on the other hand, tend to

be more vulnerable to negative affective states, competitive anxiety, thoughts of escape or withdrawal, and self-handicapping behaviors, particularly when faced with the prospect of loss or failure. These stark differences have been attributed to the fact that performance-oriented individuals are more interested in appearing competent than actually being competent. Because they perceive losing as a threat to their sense of self-worth, they are highly sensitive to social cues and are more likely to look for ways to avoid situations in which the level of challenge might exceed their ability. In the case of mastery orientation, motivation and engagement are driven more by intrinsic interest in the task itself than ego-centered needs for approval and social status. Thus, mastery-oriented individuals are generally considered to be better equipped to handle pressure and other competitive stressors than their performanceoriented counterparts.

WIN SOME AND LEARN SOME The comparison offered thus far makes it seem like a no-brainer, with mastery orientation unequivocally being the better of the two options. However, before we jump to the conclusion that focusing exclusively on developing task mastery is best for all individuals at all times, let us not forget the fact that many performers appear to

thrive on competition and the pursuit of egocentric goals. For those with a strong drive to achieve and the confidence to pit their skills against others, competition and outcomerelated performance goals can function as great motivators and facilitators of high achievement. But even in such cases, an egoinvolved performance orientation tends to be fragile and can lead to maladaptive processing in response to any sudden drop in performance or increased risk of failure (with emphasis on tends to be, which does not mean always in every case). Let us also not forget that achievement orientation is a dynamic psychological construct that is subject to change across time and context. A performer might adopt different orientations in different contexts - for example, being highly task-involved and focused on mastery during training, but becoming more performance-oriented or ego-involved when competing. Similarly, an athlete might be focused primarily on mastery and learning throughout the early stages of a competition, but shift to a more competitive, resultsoriented focus in the later rounds when the stakes become higher and the outcome matters more. Ultimately, individuals are capable of entertaining multiple competing goal orientations simultaneously, striving to both

improve their own performance and outperform other competitors. Accordingly, some researchers have proposed the idea that, rather than representing opposite poles on a single continuum, these two orientations are actually orthogonal constructs – meaning that individuals can be high in both mastery and performance orientation, low in both, or high in one and low in the other. Being high in both performance and mastery orientations might very well be the most optimal scenario of all, because the individual would then stand to benefit from multiple streams of performance feedback. Moreover, given that they have multiple ways of conceptualizing success, individuals with both types of achievement orientation are less likely to end up unsatisfied and therefore more likely to maintain a high level of effort and engagement.

SUMMARY What conclusions, if any, can we draw from the findings presented here?

supplement to help protect against the potentially negative effects of an emphasis on ego-related performance goals. Rather than suppressing performance goals and replacing them with mastery goals, we should simply concentrate on cultivating an attitude that is summed up by the philosophy of “win some or learn some.” By focusing on getting a little bit better every day rather than constantly comparing yourself to others or some external standard, the threat of failure begins to lose its foothold, and performance anxiety has no way to gain traction. In the end, it is not about deciding whether you should universally adopt a mastery or performance orientation, but rather understanding the particular circumstances under which each of these two orientations is optimal. Per usual, the trick is figuring out the strategy that is optimal for you. With you in the pursuit, Dr. Dave

LET THE MUSIC MOVE YOU

LIVE ON THE LAWN CONCERT SERIES COMES TO WATERFRONT PARK Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

There’s something special about live music. Outdoor venues in particular are fun because in the Midwest they mark the start of temperate weather, and after a long winter nothing feels better to many people than listening to a favorite artist in a live, outdoor setting. This is precisely why, in 2019, the folks at Danny Wimmer Presents (DWP) approached representatives from the Waterfront Development Corporation to discuss the idea of putting on a summer concert series at Waterfront Park. Plans were in the works during the first quarter of 2020 when COVID-19 brought concerts to an abrupt halt. “It was like this slow torture because when the virus first hit in March, we thought it was going to be two weeks of a pause,” says Deborah Bilitski, executive director of Waterfront Development Corporation. “That turned into four weeks, then six weeks. We were optimistic, thinking that

certainly by summer things would be back to normal, then by fall. Events kept getting pushed back, and reality finally set in.”

Partnering with DWP has helped build a newly created membership program for Waterfront Park.

Thankfully, however, in recent months things have turned around. Now, more than ever, the public has a voracious appetite for live music.

“They have allowed us to create a pre-sale code for people who are members or join as members of Waterfront Park, which entitles them to a pre-sale code to purchase tickets before they go on sale to the general public,” Bilitski says.

“There’s almost been a mad rush of people asking us to start scheduling activities again,” Bilitski says.

They created pod seating so people can It makes perfect sense. After a year of having safely gather for live events. The idea is to next to nothing penciled onto our calendars, purchase pods that include people with whom attendees regularly associate, in order society is eager to have fun. to minimize interaction with people outside DWP has had a strong presence in Louisville of their “bubble.” According to McCurry, pods are similar to traditional amphitheater for quite some time, but this marks the first season of the Live on the Lawn at Waterfront seating, with boxed seats behind the first Park concert series, which kicked off in June. reserved section before the lawn. available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each pod contains a minimum of four and a maximum of six tickets. A limited number of general admission lawn seating tickets may also be sold, with plenty of room for physical distancing. Lawn tickets may be purchased in any quantity including singleticket purchases. The buzz surrounding this concert series is ever-growing as folks embrace the return of live music. “People are incredibly enthusiastic to get out and start rejoining the community,” says Bilitski, who notes how sad it is that

the Waterfront Park events calendar was empty last year. “That felt so strange since we typically host up to 150 events in Waterfront Park every year.” These events are the lifeblood of the park, as the resulting revenue is how the park is operated and maintained. Because Waterfront Park is not part of the metro park system, it does not receive state funding. In fact, less than 30% of its operating funding comes from metro government, which means park leaders have to earn the remaining 70% of revenue to support the park.

“We try to do everything we can to partner with the community and local businesses in order to keep this amazing asset we have here in our city welcoming, free and accessible to everyone,” Bilitski says. The community’s response to these concerts is a positive sign, not just for Waterfront Park but for the community as a whole. The first three shows, featuring Billy Strings, sold out almost immediately. They added a third show, and those tickets were snatched up within hours. Shinedown was announced the following day and sold out quickly, too. If current ticket sales are any indication of what’s to come, Bilitski is anticipating a busy

McCurry is not surprised that folks are champing at the bit to get out and have fun, given what we’ve all endured throughout the past year. “The world went from 100 to 0 in a blink of an eye, and people miss what live music provides,” she says. “Live music and that communal experience you have of celebrating your favorite song or artist with neighbors or friends is so special and one of the things people missed the most this year.”

faces in a long time,” McCurry says. “It was almost like this huge sigh of relief to feel normal, to be back at a show, and to feel that connection again. I’ve never seen more smiles in my life than I did that weekend.” This concert series will likely help to reenergize the downtown area. “Don’t ever underestimate the power of Waterfront Park to bring people from every part of this community to our downtown area,” says Bilitski. The park draws visitors from every metro council district and every county in the surrounding region. One in four visitors comes from outside the region just to visit the park, walk the bridge or attend an event.

When the gates opened for the first Live on the Lawn show, McCurry was blown away by what she witnessed.

“Everyone who comes to this park feels like they belong,” Bilitski says. “They all see this as their park.”

as people partake in all of the downtown attractions, including hotels, restaurants and shops. The first concert of the series attracted people from 28 different states, including California and New York. That proves not only society’s excitement to travel again, but also fans’ devotion to going long distances in order to experience their favorite band live. “That also goes to show that Louisville is a true tourist destination,” McCurry says. JULY IS NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH 28 / JULY 2021

Writer / Abigail Hake

I remember going out every Sunday with my grandparents for dinner and afterward enjoying a special treat. We’d head over to Baskin Robbins and pick one (or two) of the 32 flavors to enjoy as a family. Ice cream is an American tradition and something that is always in our freezers. It’s a national staple,

especially during those summer months, which is why July is the perfect time to celebrate National Ice Cream Month.

is history! While the bill only specified July 1984 as National Ice Cream Month, the tradition carries on all these years later.

In 1984, a Senator from Kentucky introduced a resolution to proclaim the month of July 1984 National Ice Cream Month. President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law that same year and the rest

Here are a few fun facts about Ice Cream: • First Lady Dolley Madison served ice cream at the 1813 Inaugural Ball • Vanilla is the most popular flavor • It takes about 50 licks to finish one ice cream cone • The U.S. is the largest producer of ice cream • A Dreyer’s Ice Cream tester actually insured his tongue for $1M • In 1920, Harry Burt put the first ice cream truck on the streets.

To begin, Steve Katsikas is an accomplished educator. He and his family are from Miami, Florida, where he worked as director of Child/Adolescent Psychological Services at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital. Going from raw images to final pictures is a complex and detailed process, Katsikas explains. “It starts with ‘stacking’ multiple pictures of your object,” he says. “I use software called DeepSkyStacker for that Katsikas’s first telescope was given to him by task. Then, you have to process your image his uncle George. “It was an old Tasco 4.5(- with a program like Photoshop to bring out the colors and faint details. It is kind of like discovering treasure when it all comes into focus and color.” Most of the time, Katsikas shoots his gorgeous photos right from his driveway, but he’s also taken his telescope to Liberty and Science Hill to get his very best shots. “Dark skies are the key to great photos,” he explains. “It is my goal this summer, conditions pending, to take the scope out West to the desert and image from the darkest skies in the U.S.”

before 2017,” he says. “We drove to a small town called Princeton, Kentucky, and set up a blanket in a school’s athletic field with about 100 other people. I was not prepared for the emotional impact of the moment when the sun went away. We could see stars, the temperature dropped, and I found myself crying and screaming like I was at a rock concert. It was unbelievable, and I have already made plans to see the next one in 2024.” Katsikas offers solid advice to those who’d like to learn more about astronomy and astrophotography. “I would suggest that folks start with observing,” he says. “Learn how to use your telescope and find your way around the sky. Then, if the astrophotography bug is biting, make the jump incrementally. There are no short cuts to getting good imaging, but I’d always encourage folks start with used gear. You need a decent telescope, a really good mount for tracking, and a good camera. Most DSLR cameras can be used

in the beginning to capture images. I have a friend, Ronnie Yates, who does all his astrophotography with a Canon Ti3 camera and gets the best photos.” He says that dedicated astrophotography cameras are the easiest to use. “Anyone interested should, for sure, join their local astronomy club first to get access to a ton of experienced and passionate folks,” he says. “I am a total beginner at this stage. I am humbled every day by the images I see in the many groups I joined for astrophotography. I love the fact that there is no finish line to this hobby. I am thrilled that this newbie gets to share his images with so many folks who also enjoy them. The universe belongs to all of us.”
