Even those who don’t reside in Middletown or visit the area frequently can still take part in the fun. The festival attracts visitors from all over the area, and Chapman hears from many who say they are impressed with what the city is doing for the community.
FAMILYTHEFOR
“We attract people from all over the community,” Chapman says. “Quite frankly, the reason it has lasted for this long is people like it and keep coming back. They say they wish they lived in Middletown, or they say they hope [residents] don’t mind that they come to our festival even though
Many visitors take the opportunity to learn more about the city, which is believed to be named after its location as the middle point between Louisville and Shelbyville.
The Middletown Family Fun Festival and Craft Show is returning for two full days of fun, food and festivities on September 9 and 10. Held in the Wetherby Park area, the annual festival will celebrate its 50th year highlighting Middletown.
“We’ve always counted it as a family-friendly festival,” says Middletown Mayor J. Byron Chapman. “We serve no alcohol. We have everything from booths to face paintings, dog shows, food, music and parades. It’s a throwback to the old-fashioned type of festival. We’re going to have entertainment in two or three locations. More people are interested because they know it’s the 50th anniversary. It’s catching on that this has been around for a while, so it is here to stay.”

MIDDLETOWN FAMILY FUN FESTIVAL AND CRAFT SHOW IS BACK
After a cancellation in 2020 and uncertainty in 2021, this year brings a sense of normalcy for the festival, which has thrived over time. The fun will begin at noon on Friday, September 9 and conclude the following night with fireworks. Expecting to attract thousands of guests, Chapman uses the festival as a way to get out and interact with the “I’llcommunity.beatthefestival and in the parade from the time it starts to the time it finishes,” Chapman says. “It’s a long day but it’s a fun day. The parade is always fun. I just enjoy after and before the parade talking to people. If they have a concern they want to talk to me about, I’m all ears. If they have a compliment, I’m definitely all ears. We’re very accessible not only during the festival, but any time. Sometimes I think there has to be a million people here even though I know it’s not. The park is always covered with people.”

Highlights of the festival include a parade, exhibits, food and craft vendors for guests to partake in. There will also be music for guests to listen to throughout the area and a Kids Zone. Even four-legged friends can get in on the fun and compete in the dog show, which will award prizes for the top three entries in categories like cutest puppy, best-dressed dog and best dog trick. The organizers usually have the festival during the month of September, when temperatures start to drop and weather is generally Chapmangood.saysthat as the city of Middletown has gotten larger, so has the festival. “Middletown has grown over the last 20 years,” Chapman says. “We have plenty of good places to shop and to eat, and for people to enjoy themselves. We have apartments now that attract a younger age. There is a younger generation that gets out and spends money in the community. We provide the festival and the concerts. The city pays for the entertainment and the food. It’s free - you just come and enjoy the food. The growth of the city has made that happen. There are activities going on all year.”

The festival provides an opportunity to highlight the city in addition to other events, like concerts also held in the park during the year, and events for Halloween and Christmas. Residents of Middletown are still part of metro Louisville, but receive additional benefits from living in “TheMiddletown.metrois divided into different council districts,” Chapman says. “We have three council people who part of their territory is along the geographic outline of Middletown. I work real closely with them. Middletown is an official tax space. The city of Middletown can provide services with that tax. We provide, in addition to what metro provides, our own police department, garbage pickup, sidewalk repairs and snow removal. Every taxpayer is important. they don’t live here. I tell them I’m glad, and to come on back. People realize they can come in and enjoy the fun. We welcome them any time.”

“We want to keep the city vibrant,” Chapman says. “I always believed the city either grows or starts declining. We don’t want it to decline because that isn’t good for people and business. I thank the residents and the business owners for continuing to support the city and everything they do. We want to maintain a big-time look in a smalltime city.” For more festival information, visit middletownsfamilyfun.com.

“The loss of brain function causes anxiety for people with dementia—both as an emotional reaction to awareness of their own decline, and as a direct result of damage to areas of the brain that control emotion and judgment,” Carter says. “We carefully assess situations to react quickly when needed and avoid overreacting when doing so will only exacerbate the problem.”
“Activities stimulate the brain through memory & reminiscence, problem solving games, spiritual & emotional support and physical exercise—all cleverly disguised as fun,” Carter says. “She even made friends with some of the other attendees,” Andrea says. “The staff’s professionalism and compassion are what helped us make the decision to place [Mom] in Heartsong Memory Care, even though it isn’t the closest to our home. Having our mom in the best care was most important.”
As a dementia care expert, Sheila Carter knew that music is important to set a mood, create energy and provide a calming environment. She knew the brain function that’s retained the longest is the part that relates to music. “Familiar music can reach a person even when their dementia is advanced. I’ve seen people who are essentially unresponsive to their name or touch, who responded in some way when their favorite music was played. They might open their eyes, or smile, or pat their hand or foot, or even hum or sing along.”

“I liked music but I never took myself too seriously,” he says. Though the pull of creativity was always there, he had other interests too, so he attended Bellarmine to pursue a degree in English and become an English teacher. On his way to classes, however, he took a detour and stopped through the music department where he played piano in practice rooms, and chatted with teachers and students. This felt like the world he belonged in, so ultimately he decided to switch his major to music.
At the time he was expecting his first child, so he knew he wasn’t going to be touring for a while. He became Ascension’s director of music in January of 2000. Right from the start he felt at home, and he appreciated the fact that folks at the church encourage creative endeavors such as themed services like Dixieland/ragtime, Caribbean, Brazilian or Hispanic.

Hildreth, who has lived in the Louisville area most of his life, did a number of recordings and some touring before meeting Jamey Aebersold and becoming a member of the faculty for the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops. In 1999 Hildreth got a call from Paul Hegele, pastor at Ascension Lutheran Church.
“Thereclicked.was something about the place that just felt right,” Hildreth says.
“He told me, ‘We’re looking for a music director and someone with jazz experience. Would you like to do that?’ and I said, ‘Nope, I don’t think so,’” Hildreth says with a chuckle. Hegele persuaded Hildreth to come for a visit and when he did, something
“That’s when I discovered jazz,” Hildreth says. He graduated in 1989 with a music degree with a jazz emphasis. Two years later he earned an English degree. He put the English degree on the back-burner and became a professional musician, playing with a number of different jazz and rock groups, including a group he formed in 1992 called Java Men, which incorporates traditional jazz, fusion, world music and InAmericana.1994heplayed on the second stage at Lollapalooza, a four-day music festival. He also played at the Knitting Factory in New York City, a club that books musicians who don’t follow the usual boundaries of rock and jazz.

“We’ve had straight, traditional jazz, and more electric, modern, soul jazz, as well as jazz with a fresh feel,” Hildreth says. “[The festival] has really been a labor of love for Hildreth,me.”who has two children, enjoys long walks, good coffees and binging on Netflix. “Thecards.only marketing we were doing was on social media,” O’Meally says. At the time, they had a small following - around 200 to 300. Now they have thousands. Their posts offered parents tips on how to treat their children with regard to diversity, self-love and self-awareness. For example, one of the best things a parent can do is cultivate diverse friends themselves. The sisters knew SPIN

LOUISVILLE-NATIVE SISTERS CREATE KIDS PRODUCT LINE FOCUSED ON DIVERSITY AND SELF-LOVE
“We wake up every day, and based off our thoughts and feelings we determine how our day is going to go,” O’Meally says. “If we teach children to wake up and have a positive take on who they are and where they come from, it could serve to really change their overall quality of life.”
It took the sisters about a month and a half to develop the final design of the affirmation
“It’s all about affirming yourself every day,” Haley says. The women, both moms, recognized the importance of positive daily affirmations, particularly for children so that they can start at an early age countering negative selftalk and self-thought.
“I thought, ‘This would be great if it represented all races rather than just one,’” O’Meally says. “At that moment, a light bulb went off in my head.” She called her sister, Lamia Haley, and the two began to brainstorm. She brought up the idea of creating flashcards with different shades of skin tones including African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, biracial and multiracial. They took it a step further, thinking how neat it would be if they could find a way to inspire kids to feel good about themselves by using words of affirmation. They decided to make alphabet flashcards with encouraging assertions for each letter. For example, “A is for ‘I am amazing,’” “B is for ‘I believe in myself,’” and “C is for ‘I can change the world.’”
Soon after purchasing a house, Kristen O’Meally went on Instagram in search of decor and color inspiration. While scrolling through the site, she came across flashcards with images of children on them. It struck her that every flashcard only included images of Caucasian children.

In October of 2020, O’Meally and Haley began selling their affirmation cards on their website, kidsforculture.com. Four months later they received an email from the buyer for Walmart’s baby department. She had found Kids for Culture on Instagram through hashtags and was intrigued by the brand. She reached out because she was interested not only in selling the sisters’ affirmation cards at Walmart, but also expanding the line by adding a book and plush toy.
“We got to design the dolls, which was great because they suggested a baby doll or stuffed animal and we wanted it to be doll with different shades of complexion,” O’Meally says. “I knew I wanted to do dolls that look like actual babies, with baby hairs on the tops of their heads.”
“Our minds were blown,” Haley says. “It’s true that Kristen and I had talked beforehand about what we would do if someone contacted us and said they wanted to sell our product, but we were joking. We joked about it but spoke it into Theexistence!”company allowed O’Meally and Haley free rein over the design.
The two-piece toy set called Positive Pals with the “ABC Affirmation” book sells for $14.83 and is marketed to build your baby’s confidence with positive words.
The women decided to add affirmations to each baby’s onesie. One says, “I am kind.” Another reads, “I am amazing.” A third says, “I am loved.” The dolls come in brown, dark brown, and fair. “We designed the affirmation cards to reflect a different skin tone with a pop of color to catch children’s eyes,” Haley says. That meant expediting the timeline, which might not have been difficult except that a pandemic was happening, which exacerbated shipping delays. The ladies finished all of their designs by mid-April, and then production started immediately. They officially launched on walmart.com on November 1, and sales soared.
“We’ve had a lot of great feedback from folks,” O’Meally says. “People are loving the dolls.” One Amazon reviewer raved, “Love this doll and the book! The doll is super soft, and my daughter loves to cuddle it. The book

SPREADINGGRATITUDE
Before starting this practice, I didn’t hang out much in a state of gratitude regularly. For the most part, I hung out in a state of survival and suffering. Thanks to the repetition of this daily practice, mantra or even prayer of gratitude, my mind is slowly but surely becoming more primed to seek out what’s right versus what’s wrong.
There is not a single habit that I’ve kept this consistently and, in the process, this practice has taught me a lot.
I’ve also discovered that you’re never “done” with the practice of gratitude. It is a daily creation. Without working that muscle, our lizard brain will sail right back to everything that doesn’t work. Bruce Lee once said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” I’m excited to see what life will look like after 10,000 days of gratitude.
Lastly, I’ve learned that sharing gratitude can be even more soul-filling than keeping it all to ourselves. The gratitude contagion effect that happens when we don’t keep our appreciation for our lives tucked away can be a win-win for both the listener and us. Check out gratitudespace.com for more gratitude related content.

Losey’s parents and grandparents played Bridge, and when she was in high school, her mom began to teach her the game but she didn’t take to it. However, in college, a bunch of her friends played so Losey decided to give it another chance. “We played terribly, but we had a good time,” she says. As with many pursuits, the more she played, the more she learned and the better she played. She even met her husband Bob playing Bridge. Given her decades-long interest in the game, it seems obvious why Losey would be president of the local association. Archives suggest the club formed in the 1930s
LOUISVILLE BRIDGE CLUB MEMBERS KEEP THEIR GAME SHARP TABLEONCARDSTHE
What is Bridge, exactly? Bridge is a four-person game in which players on opposite sides are partnered up. North and South are partners, as are East and West. Players are dealt 13 cards each from a standard deck of 52 cards, but before any cards are played in what is called a trick, bidding happens. “When you’re bidding, you’re describing what your hand looks like,” Losey says. “You are telling your partner whether you’ve got something worth playing with or not. It’s a conversation.” Bidding goes clockwise around the table until three players pass. A pass is sort of like saying, “I don’t have any good cards,” or “I’ve already shared all the information I can share about my hand.” At this point, actual play begins. To a novice, the bidding process may seem like players speaking in riddles. Fortunately, a player can ask the partner of a bidder, so if East makes a bid, West can explain what that bid means to a player who asks what that bid means. “When we play in sanctioned games, we are always ethical and disclose when asked,” Losey says. “It is kind of like a secret language, but you’re obliged not to keep it secret.” When bidding ends and a contract is set, the person who first bid the contract’s suit (for example, Clubs) becomes the declarer. The player to the left of the declarer makes the opening lead (plays one card from their hand), and the player to the left of that person becomes the dummy. The dummy (always the partner of the declarer) puts all their cards on the table face-up so that everyone can see their hand. The declarer physically plays the cards of the dummy as well as their own hand. Every person must play a card in the suit that was led unless or until a player doesn’t have any more cards in that Oncesuit.every player has put down a card, the trick is done and the person who played the highest card in that suit wins the trick. The winner then leads a card, and the other players, in clockwise order, play a card to the trick, following suit unless they have no more cards in the suit and can play a trump card or must discard from another suit.
As a child, I remember seeing the daily Bridge section of the Courier-Journal newspaper and wondering what all that North, South, East and West stuff was about. It seemed mysterious to me then and, honestly, remains that way today. Bridge is not necessarily an easy game to pick up, but it is a game that never gets dull. This is why Dotty Losey, president of the Louisville Bridge Club, has been playing the game for 40-plus years. “It’s probably the most complicated game of all of them,” she says. “I’ve heard chess players say that.”

If not, they can “call the Bridge Club, find out who the director of the game is on the day you want to play, and they will find you a partner,” Losey says.

“Our Bridge Club sponsors online games on Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m.,” she says. Of course, COVID-19 impacted the Louisville Bridge Club, and things are only now starting to pick back up. “There used to be days where it wasn’t unusual to have 20 to 25 tables - that’s 80 to 100 people,” Losey says. “Other days would have 10 to 12 tables. It’s about half that now.” 502-254-5200

It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that Bridge is good for the mind. It can boost memory and concentration abilities. The social aspect of the game is also hugely important. “It’s a lovely community,” Losey says. “You get to know people and they look after each other. Some of my fondest childhood memories are picnics at the lake with family and friends. We enjoyed Italian submarine sandwiches from our local Italian deli, homemade macaroni salad my dad made, and my mom’s famous brownies with rich chocolate frosting. We enjoyed our meal and then took turns sailing around the lake in my family’s sailboat. You don’t need fancy food to have a picnic. It doesn’t all have to be homemade. Play to your strengths. You do need a little bit of planning, good food, and friends and family. Here are five tips for enjoying the perfect picnic.

My parents owned a restaurant and catering company, so I believe it’s important to eat good, high-quality food at your picnic. It doesn’t all have to be homemade. Don’t overdo it. Set a budget. I prefer to provide the food for my guests instead of a pitchin/potluck. It makes things easier for everyone and you won’t have duplicate items. Also, guests won’t feel added pressure of what to bring and they can enjoy themselves. Who knows - maybe your guests will reciprocate and invite you to the next picnic or party. Set a budget and think of your signature dishes (what you make best), and work from there. I like to serve either fried chicken or sandwiches at a picnic. I like to buy fried chicken from a local restaurant or grocery, or make good sandwiches (ham and cheese on French bread, or BLTs on French bread). For the sides and dessert, I like to serve fruit (cut-up pineapple, 1/2

Picnic Pro Tip: Don’t forget the games. Let the kids play with bubbles, hula hoops, Frisbees and other toys.
Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Keep picnic supplies in one location. I keep plastic cups, plates, silverware, napkins and tablecloths on a separate shelf in the pantry. I’m always ready to plan a picnic. If you don’t have these supplies, it’s an inexpensive investment for cute, plastic picnic supplies.

PARK LOUISVILLE MEMORY CARE
I don’t want to waste money buying what I already have on hand. Make sure you have enough extra cups, plates, silverware and napkins. Make a list of what you may need to buy, such as disposable tablecloths.

Look at your favorite city or local park and reserve a covered table or two. If you’re not able to reserve a table, you can always find empty picnic tables and/or a large area of grass to put down extra tablecloths. If kids will be at your picnic, try to find a park with a playground or spray pad so the kids will have something to do after eating.
3. PLAN WHERE YOU PICNIC
PEOPLE SAY THERE’S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT PARK LOUISVILLE.
Picnic Pro Tip: Try to use plastic plates and cups if possible. Plastic plates are sturdier than paper plates. If you do use paper, this is the time to splurge on thick paper plates and cups.
Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Once you get home, relax and congratulate yourself on a fantastic picnic.
Picnic Pro Tip: Try to find a local park where you can park your vehicle close to the picnic area. This will make it easier to unload and load up picnic supplies.
32 / SEPTEMBER 2022 / TownePost.com strawberries and watermelon), homemade pasta salad (with a vinaigrette or salad dressing), lemon bars, brownies and cookies. You can purchase the desserts from your favorite bakery. I like to have plenty of water and canned drinks on hand with slices of lime and lemon. I prefer to keep the number of guests at the picnic to 10 or fewer. It’s a nice number of guests and allows everyone to hear each other talk, and it won’t break your budget.
Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Don’t forget salt and pepper, mayo, mustard and other condiments. I like to use packets so each guest can take a few packets if they need to.
Picnic Pro Tip: Allow yourself an extra 30 minutes before you leave, and double check your picnic list to make sure you have everything packed and ready to go. Try to keep everything in a few large, soft cooler bags or coolers so you don’t have a lot of small bags to carry. Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Pack a few foldable chairs just in case someone might want to sit in a chair. Pack a couple of spray water bottles with fans. I have a few of these on hand and they are a perfect way to cool off on a hot day. They are usually under $10 at most stores. These are good to have on hand for concerts, sporting events and other outdoor activities.
2. MAKE A LIST OF PICNIC SUPPLIES
Picnic Pro Tip: Don’t forget to pack some snacks. Hungry guests will appreciate some snacks at the picnic before you eat the main meal.
Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Look at your local weather forecast and try to plan your picnic on a dry day that’s not too hot. Plan your gathering early in the day or late in the day for optimal weather conditions.
4.PACK AHEAD
I like to pack a supply bag (cups, plates, silverware, napkins, paper towels for any messes, wet wipes, garbage bags and tablecloths) in advance. Keep all the drinks and food in the fridge until shortly before leaving to guarantee they will be cold. I pack the food and drinks in two soft cooler bags with ice packs. Pack some bubbles, Frisbees, hula hoops and other toys for the kids. I also like to bring a wireless speaker to play music during the picnic.
5. HAVE FUN Don’t stress about your picnic. This is the time to ask any guests who arrive early to help unpack the car, and carry the bags and coolers to the picnic table and set up. Take a break and pour drinks for guests, and turn on the music while setting up the meal. You spent a lot of time planning and now it’s time to have fun, enjoy the food and spend time with your guests. The extra planning makes for a successful picnic party.

On May 14 business and community leaders gathered to beautify the heart of St. Matthews as a way to welcome the new season. The project area was located on Shelbyville Road between Chenoweth Lane and St. Matthews Avenue. Over a period of half a day, 24 large planters were filled to the brim with colorful, blooming flowers and eight new trees were planted, all to revitalize the heart of St. Matthews. It was a mission between the City of St. Matthews, Independence Bank, Brightside of Louisville and business leaders in the area, and it was one that Mayor Richard Tonini has been working toward for quite a few “Weyears.wanted to do a community cleanup earlier, but the pandemic put a pause in our meetings,” Tonini says. About 25 years ago the City of St. Matthews, Brightside of Louisville and a number of business owners put efforts toward repairing sidewalks, planting trees and beautifying multiple blocks in the heart of St. Matthews including Lexington Road, Frankfort Avenue, Shelbyville Road, Breckenridge Lane, Chenoweth Lane and parts of St. Matthews Avenue. Unfortunately, the amount of care needed for the upkeep was greater than the manpower available.

“I worked under Mayor Bowling Sr. as a kid,” he says. The weekend was one that he’s sure he predecessors would have loved to see.

Customers who frequent the bars and restaurants in the area will be welcomed by sidewalks that have been freshly pressure-washed, removing years of foot traffic, spilled food and chewed gum. The City of St. Matthews is going to water the flowerpots, utilizing a dump truck carrying a water barrel to water each flowerpot a few times per week.

“A clean, nice neighborhood is inviting to people and spurs economic development,” says Independence Bank Louisville Market President Louis R. Straub II. “One way to appeal and attract new businesses to our area is to help property values increase. It is each of our responsibilities to maintain and improve our properties and neighborhoods.”
“It was a true team effort,” Tonini says. “The people are interested in getting this thing done. That’s what you really need to get everything replanted and to stay on top of it.”
“We’re all doing our part,” Tonini adds. St. Matthews Feed & Seed donated flowerpots and the flowers adorning them. “Now we have a nice, clean block with beautiful flowering plants,” Tonini says. “The majority of that area is actually part of metro Louisville, but we’re being equal partners. Everyone thinks it looks like St. Matthews - when it looks bad we get the blame, and when it looks good we’d like to get the blame too.”

“It’s noticeable that the central business district could use a little TLC,” Straub expressed. “Without focused attention, this area runs the risk of falling behind other neighborhoods. Our investment is important. We hope this movement will gain momentum and encourage others to prioritize neighborhood pride and beautification projects.”
For now, Tonini is unsure if the refreshing event will become an annual endeavor, but city officials hope the citizens of St. Matthews will appreciate the efforts to keep the heart of the city beating proudly, and extend it to other blocks in the city.
“Let’s face facts - when these business owners have a more attractive entryway into their businesses, their businesses are much more inviting to customers,” Tonini adds. “People will ride their bikes by and want to return to check out the area. If it looks uninviting, nobody will want to stop and shop. We just want to make it look inviting, help the businesses and help the image of what St. Matthews is.”
