Dr. Sandor Gal of the Log Cabin Animal Hospital by Kimberly Laughlin The Log Cabin Animal Hospital is a safe haven for pets as well as a nostalgic museum and meeting place for area residents. Years prior to the construction boom in Geist, the area was acquired by a rich businessman who aided in developing the land into what we know today as Geist Reservoir. The Log Cabin Animal Hospital showcases many pictures from and much information about these days, along with artifacts from the area. The Hospital is also the headquarters of Dr. Sandor Gal, who researched this era and organized his findings into a museum. He is a premier veterinarian who has made the unique combination of an animal hospital and museum a reality, and has an interesting story himself to tell.

“I always wanted my father to be proud of me,” said Dr. Gal. “It gave me drive to do something with my life.” After graduating from the University of Veterinary Sciences in 1981, an opportunity presented itself in the form of an internship. “I was offered work in Muncie in 1985,” he said. Dr. Gal then decided to stay in Indy and obtained a license to practice medicine. “I always wanted to work with domestic animals,” he said. “There weren’t many opportunities for veterinarians in Hungary unless your practice was centered around larger animals, so I decided to put my life here for the opportunity, in this land of immigrants.” During his first years in the States, Dr. Gal held various jobs helping animals. He worked at the Airport Animal Emergency Center, the Banfield Pet Hospital, and Dunes Pet Animal Hospital, all in Indiana. He estimates that he has worked in about fifty hospitals as a relief doctor. In 2001, Continued on Next Page

atGeist.com Relaunches Website As the web traffic to atGeist.com has grown over the last two years, so has the need for more functionality and community tools. Meet Your Neighbor: Immigrant, Veterinarian Dr. Sandor Gal another opportunity presented itself when Fred Eichrodt, former owner of the Log Cabin, decided to sell his property. Eichrodt could no longer keep the structure and its surrounding property up, but he wished for the original building to stay the same. Dr. Gal agreed that the landmark should remain, and he embarked on a threeyear adventure of refurbishing the house. The project was enormous, and the work difficult, but the end result made it all worth it. “I saw the place in 2001 in my head just as it is now,” he said. Dr. Gal connected two separate buildings, the house and the barn, into a single structure that now encompasses all of the Hospital’s facilities. These include a pharmacy area, surgery area, offices, consultation rooms, kennels, the waiting area and future atGeist.com

into an atmosphere that is all sterile, and here we make them feel comfortable.”

While the facilities of the Log Cabin Animal Hospital may be found in every other hospital, the atmosphere and layout are unique. “Our rooms here are like a reception,” Dr. Gall said. “We give full attention in a small, comfortable area. Dogs seem to like the quiet here, and they feel like they are in someone’s home.” The Hospital has consultation rooms in which there are murals depicting animals and Geist scenery. In these rooms, animal owners can sit in comfortable chairs and watch Animal Planet on televisions. The front room, which is home to many of the collected pieces, has a children’s play area, leather couches, and a fireplace. According to Dr. Gal, “We have a very home-y feeling here. It is frightening for pets to come

Dr. Gal, through his years of working with animals, has found there are some things he wishes to do differently with his own practice. While most dogs only need one vaccination a year, he feels that communication in between these yearly visits is crucial to the livelihood of the animal. “We are into informing and educating,” he said. “We want our pets to live as long as possible, so we do not just simply treat existing problems.” Dr. Gal sets each client up with a password and log in, which can be used online to log in and check their animal’s records. He also makes a point to forward helpful medical information to clients whose pets could benefit from the

news. “With the limited communication between the owner and the doctor, it is important to get out this information.” “At first glance, people form an opinion,” said Dr. Gal. “And with people visiting here, they see it once and are totally amazed with all that is available to them.” He says that many people are surprised to discover that the Hospital houses Geist artifacts as well. “Some people will stop by with their kids and walk around, reading about the history. Those are the best days for me.” Dr. Gal also says that due to his culture, he loves to entertain and finds joy in owning a place he can invite people to visit. In the past, the Hospital had thirty six-year-olds from St. Simon come on a field trip to learn about the history of Geist, which is a pattern he hopes will repeat. “I really

Meet Your Neighbor: Immigrant, Veterinarian Dr. Sandor Gal cont’d Jennifer, and two children, Alex and Noelle. He speaks with his parents that live in Hungary every day, and they have come to visit him in the United States numerous times. He makes the twenty-hour trip back home about five to ten times a year. He laughed about making a trip home for a single day for the sole purpose of wanting to be there for a good Sunday dinner. “My mother was telling me what she was making for dinner and it was my favorite dish, so I drove to the airport and surprised her for dinner. I stayed for the day and came back that evening. It was well worth the trip.” “Hungary is very different from the United States,” Dr. Gal said. “I had to get used to the fact that when someone says ‘Nice to meet you, I will give you a call,’ they do not

necessarily mean they will call you immediately.” He said that at first, he would be the one making the call to remind the new acquaintance of the promise. Otherwise, he finds Americans to be friendlier, and he enjoys living in a country comprised of immigrants. “I am very much happy that I made the move here!”

Historical Society. While Dr. Gal is very pleased with what he has acquired so far, he had a special request for an item he thinks would make a great contribution to the museum. “I would love to get an old carriage that someone in the area has,” he said. “It would look great out in the front by the road.” In his spare time, this doctor and history buff is a family man. He enjoys spending time with his two children, nineyear old Alex and four-year old Noelle. Dr. Gal played basketball and tennis in college, both of which he enjoys today. He reluctantly admitted that he was also his university’s chess champion. Gardening and cooking are his other fortes, and he says he has had many friends recommend to him opening a Hungarian restaurant due to his cooking skills. But,

As for his immense interest in all things history (as well as animal), he attributed that to his high school classes. “I have always been interested in history, and fascinated by how it repeats itself,” he said. He credits his wife Jennifer for her help, doing research for months on end for the growing museum. Much dedication was put into this project, from getting the word out about his interest in artifacts to buying hard to find pictures from the

as for now, this is to remain a hobby. “As you get older, you ask yourself about the purpose of life. Where most would measure success with money, I measure it by creating something in my mind and actually doing it,” he said. And for Dr. Gal, one shining example is the Log Cabin Animal Hospital. “I want other people to benefit from this and use it,” he reflected. “I cannot leave anything more than what I have created, and then hope that people appreciate it.” He jokes that his mind is constantly full of ideas, and he is actually the type to see them through. “My wife would like a couple of years without these ideas,” he said with a laugh, “but I am very happy with what I have accomplished here.”

Wine Tour in September

Ziti’s Gourmet Bistro Opens at Fall Creek and 79th St. Good Italian food is hard to come by. It takes experience and patience to create great cuisine, and Harrison and Teresa Morphew, owners of the new Ziti’s Gourmet Bistro, feel they are on to something. They themselves live in the Geist area and felt this was the perfect place to offer their individualized fare. With fifty years collective experience in the food industry, this husband and wife duo offer authentic Italian cuisine in a rustic bistro atmosphere. The name Ziti’s was chosen very carefully by the Morphew’s. “Ziti is the forgotten pasta,” said Harrison. “In the old days, they brought over lots of pasta. Somehow ziti, which is short penne noodles that hold flavor really well, was not remembered as much.” This restaurant, though, specializes in signature ziti dishes. “It also helps that the word ‘ziti’ comes off the tongue fast,” he said. “People will remember that!” Harrison has spent half of his life in Europe and came to love the Italian cuisine

and way of eating. He and his wife have incorporated this European way into their bistro. “’Bistro’ is actually Russian, meaning a small rustic place where people gather,” he said. Ziti’s is decorated as such, with brick, wrought iron accents, and unique artwork. “We basically grew up in this industry and came to love it,” he said. “We are very happy to open our own place as it has been a dream for twenty years.”

met meal.” This is just a little place, and we are having fun cooking good food,” Harrison said. “We will sometimes work twelve to fourteen hour days; cooking, bar tendering, whatever, to make our business go.” He says that three rules are followed in order to bring their customers the best: “We use great products, have a clean place, and offer better service than anyone else. We are in this because we love it.”

Though the restaurant has only been open since June of this year, Harrison has found that some dishes are becoming quite popular. The Ziti Madre Teresa, named after his wife, has been a best seller. Another crowd pleaser is their authentic, thin crust pizzas. “We make Italian gourmet food from the freshest ingredients,” Harrison said. “Word of mouth is bringing people here, and our customers have been very receptive.”

Gelato DaVinci: Dishing Out Gelato Italian gelato: those who have had it know what an experience it can be. Gelato is actually an Italian type of ice cream that is folded instead of whipped when made, thus creating a very dense treat. Gelato also has half the butter fat and less sugar than ice cream or custard, making it a more healthy choice. On the forefront of bringing this European delicacy overseas is Gelato DaVinci Brilliant Italian Ice Cream, Espresso, and Cappuccino. This family owned and operated business brought the recipe straight from Tuscany, Italy, to ensure its authenticity and great taste. Ron Colvin is one of three brothers who, along with their spouses and parents, operate the Gelato stores. He said that his family made the trip to Italy and loved the different taste and texture of gelato. It was his brother Jim who originally

pushed the idea of opening a gelateria in the area, and on July 19th, 2004, the idea became a reality when Gelato DaVinci opened in the Brooks Schools Shoppes. Just three months later, the gelateria was asked by Simon Malls to open a second location in the Clay Terrace Mall in Carmel. “We are glad we did this, exposure wise,” said Colvin. “It is in a mall setting, and we offer a light lunch there, also.” That light lunch is now being added to the menu at the Brooks School location in celebration of one year of business. Options include chicken salad croissants, panini sandwiches, quiche, salads and soups. In addition to these lunch specials, Gelato DaVinci also serves sorbet, made with fresh fruit, and the number one Italian coffee, Segafredo Zanetti. “We have people come in every day just for the coffee,” said Colvin. “It was voted

The Italian theme continues into the décor, as shown by the patio with umbrellas, terra cotta floors, and murals painted on the walls. Near the back of the gelateria, there is a room decorated as an Italian walkway, with streetlights and seating that has become popular for some larger groups wanting to relax while eating. “This is a family atmosphere and a family business, and we like to get to know everyone who comes through our door,” said Colvin. And as for the name, Colvin said that the famed artist Leonardo DaVinci was from Tuscany, which is where the recipe originated “The name fits in with our whole Tuscany theme, and it helps to explain what we are about,” said Colvin. While there are over twenty flavors of gelato to choose from, he personally rec-

ommends the Italian Kiss, which is a mixture of chocolate, nuts, and orange. Colvin has found that customer favorites are the chocolate and peanut fudge chip gelato and the raspberry and mango sorbet. “We also have four to six flavors in reserve that are seasonal, like pumpkin in the fall and eggnog in the winter,” he said. “And we make it all here!” Colvin said that he knows they are doing things right when people return from Italy and try his gelato. “They will go to Italy, and somehow come find me and love it,” he said. “The best is when they say it tastes just like it did in Italy. When we make something people can relive, and bring back good memories of their trip, that is the best of the best.” Visit Gelato DaVinci at 12660 E. 116th Street or 146th and Meridian in the Clay Terrace Mall.

Weed Whacked: The Science of Weed Control By Steve Hiner, president of Good Nature, Inc. Any plant growing in an undesirable location is, by definition, a weed. Weeding is probably the most hated household chore. Weeds can be really difficult to control for most people, especially if neglected. They show up in our lawns, in our landscape beds, and even in the cracks of sidewalks and driveways. How is it that some people struggle with weeds, while others seem to have it easy with nary a weed at all? Weed control is a science. The most important thing about managing weed growth is timing. Whether in your beds or in your lawn, apply your pre-emergent herbicide before March 15th. Preen® is a good product for beds, and your lawn care professional can help you choose the best pre-emergent herbicide for your lawn. It is essential to apply before soil temperatures warm up and annual weed seeds begin to germinate. After germination, you’ll have to use a post-emergent herbicide to kill weeds. Round-up® is the best postemergent that is available to the public. Below are some tips for using Round-up® on weeds in your beds. Follow these steps, and your landscape beds should

is green. • Keep your eyes open for newcomers and be diligent about this process before weeds become a larger problem. • Do not use products with a residual systemic life. Round-up® works by contact with foliage only and has no effect on roots. Some other brush and weed killers can taint your soils for very long periods of time and make it impossible for any plants to grow.

look good. • Mix Round-up® concen trate in a 1 or 2 gallon pump sprayer, according to label directions. • Add 1 small squirt of dish soap such as Palmolive®. This acts as a surfactant, which helps the Round-up® stick to the leaves. • Apply on a day when no rain is expected for at least 10 hours and the wind speed is very low. You don’t want the rain to wash the herbicide away or the wind the blow it onto your plants. • Be very careful not to step on freshly sprayed areas by walking backwards. You’ll kill turf grass with your wet shoe bottoms. • Adjust the nozzle and keep pressure consistent. This will eliminate atomizing the herbicide. Atomized herbicide drifts in the wind more easily. • Reapply post-emergent herbicide every 8-10 days to get second generation weeds that may not have popped out yet and stubborn weeds that just absorb the herbicide less efficiently. • Do not treat lawn weeds unless you are okay with large dead/brown spots in the turf. Round-up® will kill almost anything that

With a little hard work and good timing, it can be easy to have relatively low weed growth in your beds. The lawn is a whole different problem. Lawn care is best left in the hands of the professionals. Many of the weed problems that occur in the

lawn cannot be controlled easily. Broadleaf weeds can be treated and controlled. However, the monocot weeds that resemble a blade of grass can only be controlled by herbicides that will also kill your desirable turf grasses. Crab grass, nut sedge and other grass-like weeds can only be controlled with a pre-emergent. It is essential to demand that your first application, which contains the pre-emergent, be applied very early, on or before March 15th.

Summer Fun at Fort Ben With summer winding down, kids want to get the most out of their vacation before the new school year. Parents, on the other hand, want to take part in activities the whole family can enjoy. Aside from the typical trips to the movies and mall, check out some amenities Fort Harrison State Park has to offer. They are a change from the ordinary and incorporate exercise and the outdoors into the fun. Fort Harrison has been a resource to Indiana resident since 1906, and it offers a wide array of uses as well as interesting history about the state.

Over the years it has been used for training of troops for the Korean, Vietnam, and Gulf Wars, in addition to WWII. Dedicated as a state park in October of 1996, Fort Harrison has seen visitation numbers increase every year. With two national historic districts within the park in addition to the use of many historic buildings, this site has become a state landmark. One of the lesser known aspects of the park is the Nature History Center. “People tend to forget that we are up here at the top of the hill!” laughed

Area Thefts Hit Close To Home By Tom Britt Since our family moved to Geist in 1998, we’ve never had any problems with crime or vandalism. We live on a quiet cul-de-sac with no thru-streets, little traffic, and great neighbors. Something has gone terribly wrong in the last two weeks. It started on July 20th as I was getting ready to leave for an afternoon meeting. We realized around noon that the car stereo out of our daughter’s car had been stolen right in our driveway. We had unlocked the car the day before and not relocked it, making it easy for a thief to get in and take the stereo. Our neighbor Nicole was outside with her two young boys so I went over and told her what had happened. She did recall a

tan colored SUV in our driveway the afternoon before which we suspect was the culprit. Her husband Kirk came over four days later and realized that his car had been broken into as well, but this time they got his cell phone and CD collection.

pay a lot of attention. Two weeks later, I was taking out the trash and noticed a Lawrence police officer at my neighbor’s house. His son’s car had the passenger window busted out and his stereo was missing, too. Two other cars on our street were also victimized, one of which was a relative from out of town visiting a retired couple two houses down. That’s five thefts in two weeks on a street of 15 homes.

We called Neighborhood Patrol and filed the report and I called Brent McFerran, president of Neighborhood Patrol and a Marion County Sheriff, to find out if other thefts occurred that day. He said that thieves are “shopping” the Geist area from their cars, driving around during the day looking for unlocked cars, purses, and other valuables in clear view of parked vehicles. I would have to admit; I’ve heard this several times before and didn’t

Needless to say, our porch lights are on every night. When I hear a door slam or any noise outside in the middle of the night, I’m up looking out the window. If I see a car I don’t recognize coming down my cul-de-sac, I note where they are going and wonder if they are shopping my street again.

Let’s be vigilant and work together to bust some of these thieves. It starts with talking to your neighbors, get their phone number, and let them know your normal schedule and any vacations you might have planned. Take mental notes of what cars your neighbors have, what their friends’ cars look like, and be on the lookout for unusual cars or visitors. Most importantly, call the police or Neighborhood Patrol (if your subdivision is patrolled by them) if you see anything suspicious. Don’t try to stop them yourself, get a good description of the thief, their vehicle, and which direction they were headed if they leave. Remember, thieves are not just stealing at night, they are stealing around the clock.

Entertain with style...

The Fort itself, which is about 1700 acres, is home to thirteen miles of hiking trails and biking paths. Fishing and picnicking are also inviting options. Historical lodging is available at The Harrison House, and according to Montgomery, the Garrison Restaurant and the Fort Golf Course have remained popular throughout the years. The Course itself is a remnant from the army days, and The Harrison House used to board visiting military VIPs, which goes to show how these facilities all tie in the rich history of the area. Activities unique to the upcoming months include Herpetology Day on September 10th and Military

The Heart of Sailing Foundation Has Successful Launch, Day of Festivities The Heart of Sailing Foundation, a program that incorporates adventures in sailing with cognitively impaired children, kicked off its latest Geist launch with a bang. The event, which was held July 15 at Bella Vita Restaurante, drew the attention of two local television crews as well as sponsorship from local businesses and public figures such as Secretary of State Todd Rokita. Eleven children were in attendance, which founder and captain George Saidah called a great turnout. “We had been

atGeist Community Newsletter

preparing for this for about a month, and while you are always a little anxious, I was really confident it would go fine,” he said. “And things went really well!” The day began with registration at 9:00. The children each received a goodie bag stocked with bubbles, captain hats, and other various goodies that were immediately put to use. DNR officer John Gano came to speak to the kids, reminding them of the importance of safety on the water, and Guy Konkle, captain at the Sailing Club, gave instruc-

10

tions about the parts of the sailboats. Finally the kids were able to get out on the water and even aid in the sailing process itself by taking the wheel.

Waldman said that the stimulation the children get on the boats is great. “The sailboats are very quiet, which is good for them. The whole thing is comforting.”

Parent Becky Waldman, whose son Chase was a sailor for the day, said her son was very excited about the day’s festivities. “Chase kind of goes with the flow, and he loves George,” she said. “The hardest part for the kids is waiting!”

After the sailing excursion on Geist, the fun continued with a luncheon and awards ceremony at Bella Vita. Sponsors, including Author House, atGeist.com, The Geist Marina, and Crown Trophy were recognized, as well as each of the sailors. They were called up one by one to receive medals and certificates. “I’ve had people email me since the event, and Caroline Dorsey, parent of John, said how proud her son was of his medal and

hat,” said George. “He has been telling all of his friends that he got to drive a boat!” George feels that his program is going even better than he had imagined. He says that more sponsors and volunteers are needed, though, to aid with these events. Future plans include a launch from Eagle Creek in mid August, a wine tasting with silent auction, and a gala event for this summer. In addition, every Wednesday George and his participants set sail on Geist for their day’s adventure. First time volunteer Byron Gully, who heard about the Heart of Sailing through the Indianapolis Sailing Club,

put his sailing skills to use by assisting the kids at the event. “This was a great opportunity,” he said. “It was time to give back.” If you want to get involved with The Heart of Sailing Foundation, please call (317) 876-1673 or visit
