Summer boating season is officially in full swing. Every day the Reservoir is host to water skiers, jet skiers, fishermen and boaters, all of whom are there to enjoy the benefits of the lake. While the majority of these people are in the know about the lake’s idle zones, speed limit, and shallow areas, many are not aware of the behind the scenes group assembled to make the lake a safe place for those who employ its use. The Geist Lake Coalition has been the backbone of many events that have taken place on the lake for the past 10 years, and according to its mission statement, works to promote courteous and safe boating on Geist Lake as well as be a source of information for local and transient boaters.

The Geist Lake Coalition was formerly part of the Geist Harbours Property Owners Association (GHPOA) Lake Committee. After more lakefront neighborhoods were developed and the community grew outside of the original

GHPOA boundaries, a Coalition was formed to take care of specific needs concerning the lake. Now the group focuses not only on their GHPOA neighbors, but also any neighborhood with lakefront properties. The members are a cross section of all homeowners associations in the area, and according to Coalition President Brian Hall, there are twelve to sixteen core members, which include Gail McDowell and Amy Roesler.

Also regularly in attendance are the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Lawrence Township and Fishers Fire Departments, EPA Agencies, and the Marina Limited Partnership. “We have board members and officers, but our membership is also open to concerned homeowners,” said Hall. “Our meetings are open to the public, and all are welcome.”

“Answers for Autism Walk” Autism is a medical condition that has been misunderstood by many for years. As said by Giham Ramadan of the Arab News, “Imagine you were in a foreign, noisy and crowded city at night, not understanding the language spoken, recognizing a few words but not really comprehending situations taking place around you, wanting to express a need for help but not being able. This experience may begin to help you relate to what a child with autism feels on an ordinary day.”

As the third most common developmental disorder, new developments are being made that can educate the community. Working toward this goal of public understanding is Geist resident Patty Reed, who is the vice president of this year's

“Answers for Autism Walk.”

This autism fundraiser, which is in its fifth year, became of great interest to Patty after she read about it in the newspaper.

Patty has a daughter who is autistic, and she chose to get involved with the cause after meeting with event organizers and realizing what a “great event” it was. “This is a good way for families with autistic children to meet each other,” she said. “It is nice to know we are not alone.”

In the past, the money raised has gone to various autism foundations, businesses, and causes in the area. “Our goal is to increase people's knowledge of autism,” Patty said. For that reason, informative videotapes have been provided to every library in Indianapolis. Money Continued on Page 3

Meet Your Neighbors: The Geist Lake Coalition involved with the efforts of the Coalition. “We want more neighborhoods, and we want to get the bass boaters,” said Villanyi. “We are looking to unify the lake and want anyone with common concerns to get involved.”

Rodgers says that the focus now, as in the past, is safety concerns. “Our goal is safety, consideration, and involvement,” he said. And the Coalition is also quick to promote the idea that it wants the lake to be enjoyed by all, not simply those with waterfront homes. “This Coalition is not an elitist group,” Rodgers said. “We want to be a unifying organization that represents all types of people.” The group, which considers itself a “steward of the lake,” encourages all things safety-related. Members teamed up with the Fishers Fire

Department and Captain Clinton Crafton to raise money for a fire and safety boat to use on Geist. After fundraising, enough money was raised to put the $67,000 boat into use on the lake. “This has had a big impact on the lake,” said Hall. “It has been especially helpful in light of recent events on the lake, such as the recovery of the man (Larry Johnson) who drowned.”

“The money goes to improving the show to make it better.”

With an increase in the budget every year to better the display, the Coalition seeks monetary support from outside sources.

“So far, we have been lucky,” said Rogers. “This is a function to which people can contribute.”

One event all Geist residents can thank the Coalition for is the fireworks show put on every Fourth of July. Hall estimates that while there are about 780 homes on the lake, almost 4,000 people were in attendance for the fireworks display. “I think this year’s show was the best yet,” said Villanyi.

Members also feel that education about the rules of the lake, such as where idle zones and markers are located, is very important. “We have freedom on the lake,” said Rodgers.

“There is not a lot of bureaucracy, and we wish to preserve that.” Villanyi sees inexperience as a huge contributor to accidents on the lake. He says that statistics have shown that with seventy to eighty percent of accidents, the operator of the vessel has had less than two hours of experience on the vessel. “We really want to raise awareness of this, and we feel education is key,” said Hall.

Those who choose to participate in the walk have a minimum of $10 pledge, but are encouraged to collect more.

First Annual Father’s Day Trip to the Ballpark Successful

by Tom Britt Our Fathers Day Trip to the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati was a great time for all. Most were Reds fans, while others just wanted to spend a day with dad away from home with their Geist neighbors.

Wondering when the Fall Creek bridge construction will finally be complete? Tim Bussell, Project Manager, says that he can “almost see the end. If the weather is decent, then hopefully we can progress quite nicely through Phase II and III by end of summer and be complete by early fall.” Very soon, look for traffic to be switched to the new section. Once the project is complete, the bridge will be widened to four lanes separated by a median. A pedestrian walkway will be added adjacent to the southbound lanes, and guardrails for both motorists and pedestrians will increase safety. To improve the traffic flow, the intersection just south of the reservoir will be realigned. Gray Eagle Golfing Pro Lends Advice to Area Golfers You are in the right mindset, have perfect alignment, and are prepared to swing. You look toward the fairway and bring your club back, ready to deliver a powerful hit that will wow the crowd. Yet, somehow, the hit wasn’t quite what you had imagined. Instead of that forceful drive you had pictured, you have committed one of golf’s most notorious crimes: slicing.

Here to lend his advice is Scott Morris, a golf pro at Gray Eagle with over forty years of golfing experience to his name.

Scott offers private instructions full time on Gray Eagle’s golf course. Because he runs the junior program, he says he gets a lot of younger clients, but Scott is able to take on a total array of ages and abilities. “I enjoy teaching anyone who gets it,” he said. “I like seeing that light bulb go off.” He

offers to his beginners tips he has seen help others over the years. “I tell them that before they practice, they should take a lesson,” he said. “Otherwise they are practicing getting better at what they might be doing wrong.” Scott says he also sees lots of people with poor alignment and posture. Yet he cites slicing as the biggest problem for golfers. “Some people just try to hit it too hard, and the resulting mistake is topping, or slicing, the ball.” He works with his clients to correct these common mistakes, which sets them on the road to a better golf game.

Scott calls very accomplished.

While they do not come in on a regular basis, they like to have someone look at their game and offer advice they may be missing from other pros.

Beginners are not the only golfers Scott lends his advice to. He has had professionals come in occasionally “to pick the brains of various pros.”

Ace Liquors Celebrates 13 Years

Ace Discount Liquors has served the Geist area’s liquor needs for thirteen years, and this year, they want to celebrate. Owners Steve and Debra Lebovits have three locations in Geist and Fishers, and they have made it a point to stay local. “Since we’ve been here, we have seen a lot of changes, namely growth, and we have tried to be supporters of the area,” Steve said. The Lebovits’ contributions include donations to Conner Prairie, the Fishers Freedom Festival, local elementary and high schools, and the fireworks fundraiser. Steve estimates that over the years, over $500,000 have been raised or donated to local organizations. Now, in addition to all of this monetary assistance, Ace Discount Liquors wants to do something for its customers, whom Steve calls “the best customers anyone could ask for!”

atGeist is producing a full-size travel map of the area, scheduled to debut in late July. The map will consist of a street atlas of area roads, schools, parks, and even subdivisions with their accompanying website urls. In addition, the wake zones will also be highlighted on the lake. Printed in full color, the map will also feature area not-for-profit organizations and clubs on the back, giving Geist visitors a true sense of what makes our community great.

Indy Ski School On Geist Offers Wakeboarding As Well As Skiing

Quintin Hunkin, one of the students, offered to us wakeboarding advice he had acquired over the week: “The hardest part is turning the board, but keep your arms straight and bend your knees.” Jessie Ingram, another ski student, said that she found it difficult to keep control of the skis but that it gets easier after the first turn. They, along with their siblings Austin Hunkin and Tim Ingram, were ending their weeklong lessons with the Ski School and had nothing but good things to say about their experience. “We all had fun, and we learned a lot,” said Jessie. In fact, Derek says that he enjoys teaching younger kids the most because

Derek Dechert has been skiing since he was a little boy and has lots of experience on the water, which enables him to better teach his students. While the majority of the people he teaches are beginners, Derek says anyone from someone who wants to learn to someone who simply wants to improve his techniques is eligible. In order to give me a first hand impression of what a day of lessons is like, Derek, along with Scott Cochran and Brandon Lawler, took myself and my friend Haley Roubicek out on Geist where he attempted to teach us beginners how to wakeboard.

For this second year of business, Derek offers lessons at $200 for four days or $100 an hour for private lessons. He is currently booked for the month of July, and on the day he took us on his boat, he had four kids

he can see their improvement.

“I just tell them to be patient and have fun,” he said. “I say don’t fight it, and then it will be fun for you.”

After the kids were finished, it was time for our lesson. Armed with advice from the Hunkins, Ingrams, and Derek, Haley and I took a shot at wakeboarding.

Moorings Calendar pull us into position and to turn the board once we got up, Haley and I were able to ride for several seconds, which was a big feat for us considering our lack of coordination and experience with the sport! This was mainly thanks to the pole that extends from the side of the boat, used for beginners, that aids in teaching wake boarders the ropes before boarding the “real” way.

Regardless, Derek, Brandon, and Scott were able and patient teachers who made the day a great experience. We had a great time leaning from the pros!
