By Tom Britt Sitting down and chatting with Windermere residents John and Tina Gianfagna renews your love of family, marriage, and community service. Their story begins at the Pratt Institute of Design in New York when then 16-year-old sweethearts fell in love and were married after graduation four years later. They began a design firm and settled in Marietta, Ohio where they raised four children; Gianni, Thomas, Diane, and Jeanette. “We had some large brand clients like 3M and Timex that we worked with for years,” said John as he reminisced over his years with the Gianfagna Group he and Tina started in 1973. The Gianfagna Group was a family business with oldest son Gianni active in the business up until they sold the business in 2001.
John and Tina Gianfagna, holding a photo of their late daughter Jeanette in their “kitchen of the mind” home studio. In 1999, their daughter Jeanette was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. She lived in Windermere with her husband and two children. “John and I would drive over from Marietta every weekend to help out with the kids and visit with her while she was going through radiation, chemotherapy, and radical surgery,” recanted Tina. While the family business was thriving in Marietta, John and Tina felt the need to move to Windermere to be closer to Jeanette. “We loved Marietta and raised all our kids there,” said Tina. “We packed up the moving trucks and moved to Fishers Continued on Next Page

Meet Your Neighbors: Residents John and Tina Gianfagna with 36,000 pounds of stuff and left the family business behind because it was the only thing to do.” “There was no question that we were doing the right thing,” John added. “We went from the day-to-day rigors of a major design consultancy to babysitting our grandchildren, making meals, and taking Jeanette to her chemo and other medical treatments.” Jeanette went to New York to receive a stem cell transplant, a treatment that put her in isolation for five weeks due to her non-existent immune system following the procedure. During this time of isolation, Jeanette took out a watercolor paint set that her sister Diane had packed for her and began painting. She wrote a letter to Tina one evening that said: “The other night I got lost in
the paint colors. My sense of time disappeared. I moved through the moments, hours, and across the day of my life in this lonely hospital room without feeling pain or anxiety. Now the days I paint are my best days. When my mind connects with my spirit I live in another world for that time. A world without illness or suffering.”
had an MBA, was business savvy, and secured enough seed funding to get Creating Hope established as a viable charity. “There has been a lot of research pertaining to the impact of self-expression on healing,” said John. “Neurophysiologists have learned that art and healing have always been one. When cancer patients are painting, an endorphin is released in the brain that acts like morphine to reduce the pain.”
When Jeanette returned from New York, she promised herself that she would help others discover the feelings that she had found through painting by establishing Creating Hope, Inc., a 501-C3 not for profit organization. The mission of Creating Hope is to give a free painting kit to anyone going through cancer treatment and to tell the patient how self-expression might help them cope with their cancer journey. Jeanette
After countless chemo and radiation treatments, Jeanette passed away on July 3, 2003. “Tina and I promised Jeanette that we would continue her ministry of helping others,” said John. On Thursdays, you’ll find John and Tina down at the IU Cancer Center demonstrating and giving away Hope Kits to cancer patients.
“We teach them simple techniques with water colors and Tina teaches them calligraphy which she taught in Marietta for years,” added John. The couple focuses on painting bookmarks, a thoughtful and lasting gift of “thanks” from cancer patients to their caregivers. While John and Tina have spent countless hours spreading the healing power of Creating Hope, they have also committed themselves to other local charitable causes. John spends a few evenings a month with a musical group from Holy Spirit at Geist Catholic Church called the Holy Mackerels where he plays harmonica for local nursing homes. Tina is in a knitting group called the Shawl Ministry, also through Holy Spirit. “When Jeanette was Continued on page 4

Heartland Film Festival Comes to Castleton Arts By Andrew Berhmann Once again Hollywood is coming to the Heartland as Indianapolis hosts an esteemed assembly of international filmmakers at the 2005 Heartland Film Festival, October 13-21. Heartland Film Festival continues its mission to recognize and honor filmmakers whose work explores the human journey by artistically expressing hope and respect for the positive values of life. This year’s lineup is especially noteworthy, with a record 12 film programs screening 23 films, including six dramatic features, six documentary features and 11 short films. The Festival will also include a black-tie awards gala, a kids’ movie party, an education seminar with industry insiders, a filmmakers’ brunch and much

more. Especially exciting this year is the star-studded Opening Night Event premiere of DreamWorks’ “Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story” with actress Dakota Fanning and director/screenwriter John Gatins scheduled to attend. In addition, the Festival will include a film sidebar of Classic Crystal Heart Award Winners. These films will be old favorites for some and new to others, with selections from the early years of the Festival.
In 14 years, Heartland has awarded more than $1.4 million to help advance quality filmmaking and to celebrate filmmakers from all over the world. Yet the Festival remains a Hoosier institution with this year’s screening program including four Indiana filmmakers.
The Festival is truly a city-wide event, with film screenings at AMC Castleton Arts on the northside, as well as downtown at the Indiana History Center, and at the AMC Greenwood Park 14 on the southside.
The Festival will also be honoring studio feature films that have received its Truly Moving Picture Award at the 2005 Crystal Heart Awards Ceremony. Among these are
Heartland has also launched a new Web site, www.TrulyMovingPictures.org, to provide an information source for filmgoers yearround. by slowly transitioning from one preset lighting “scene” to the next. People naturally migrate out of our kitchen to follow the lights without even noticing the levels have changed.
What makes Smart Homes so smart? I get a lot of questions from people who have seen TV shows spotlighting “Smart Homes.” They have the idea that these homes are controlled by a complicated and impractical computer or master brain. They don’t want to give up control of anything in their lives - even a light switch. In business, successful executives achieve “control” by surrounding themselves with people of vision. They respond to business needs and provide the necessary initiative to find solutions. The best employees anticipate and respond to issues before their employers even have to ask. A well-designed home automa-
tion system or Smart Home works the same way.
Smart Homes like this one here, are smart because they make life easier, more comfortable, and eco-friendly.
We have two small children who love to leave the lights on. To conserve energy, our home’s automation system knows when a person enters the kitchen and if it is dark enough to need a light. The system turns on the kitchen lights then shuts them off when the person leaves. I don’t need to follow our kids around the house flicking light switches any more.
While entertaining we like to “paint the house with light” by setting the dimmers at just the right levels to match the mood of the evening. With one touch to a light switch, control pad, or remote, our lights adjust to preset levels called “scenes.” Our home automation system also responds to our desires
Some other great automated home conveniences include: • At bedtime, you can press the “bedtime” button on the kitchen control panel. The system turns on your bedroom light then waits five minutes to turn off all the other house lights. It also lowers the house temperatures to nighttime levels • At night, the garage door remote turns on the mudroom and kitchen lights, unlocks the mudroom door and turns off the security system. You enter a lit home without having to jostle a sleeping child in your arms. • If you get up in the middle of Continued on next page

More Audio Visual Tech Talk the night, the system responds to the light switch by turning on the lights at a lower intensity due to the time of day. Now you can see, but don’t wake up too much. • The system accurately detects which owner is in a room. It modifies music play lists, lighting, and temperature based on their personal preferences. A well-designed smart home automation system is highly integrated. The more systems you can gather data from, the smarter the home as it responds to more inputs. Sounds great, right? The good news is that convenient home automation is more affordable than you think, but it does require a significant amount of skill on the part of the programmer and designer. Here are a couple tips to help you along the way:
TIP 1: If possible, pre-wire your house or renovation project with automation in mind. The pre-wire cost is less than adding wires after the drywall is up and the walls are painted.
By Kristin Thomas atGeist.com Contributing Editor We all know how much pain and suffering the people of New Orleans are going through after Hurricane Katrina swept through and left nearly half a million people homeless and in need of help. People all around the country have been contributing their extra cash to the Red Cross and other companies to offer aid to these victims. Even the kids in our community are coming up with their own ideas to help.
TIP 2: Be very wary of Wireless devices. They’re convenient but unreliable. Think how many times you’ve lost a cell phone connection versus your landline phone. An unreliable system is just a frustrating and unused waste of money. It takes careful engineering and testing to achieve good, reliable wireless results. In the end, Smart Homes are smart because they make life easier, more comfortable, and eco-friendly. Tranz Skate Park to Become Local Hangout By Kimberly Laughlin There is a new skate park in town, and it is geared to be a safe, fun environment for Indy skaters. Tranz opened June 19, 2005, and “is a service to the community” according to Pastor Ron Neal of Mt. Zion Ministries. This church community, which is only four years old, recognized the need
for a place area youth could gather to skate. “Laws about skating changed, and we saw lots of kids being shut out,” said Neal. “This has become a widely known sport, though, and we wanted to offer something to the kids.” Tranz provides for every skater’s needs with a pro shop that includes everything from

boards to apparel. The shop also sells protective gear, including helmets, which are necessary in order to skate. Those seventeen and under have to have their legal guardian sign a waiver, but after that, let the skating begin. “We like to keep the sessions to about two hours,” said Neal. “We charge $6.00 for these sessions.” In addition, Tranz is offering deals to frequent customers. Every fifth skating session is free, and if a customer brings two new skaters to the park, his session is without charge. News seems to be spreading fast, though, considering the 480 skaters signed into Tranz’s computer list after only eight weeks of business.
ter pipes, two fun boxes, and 8 and 5 foot start boxes. Local skaters that have checked out Tranz give it two thumbs up. “I think it’s a fun place to skate and hang out,” said David Quiocho, who has been skating for three years. He said he saw the sport on television and “fell in love with it,” and now he practices whenever the chance arises. Quiocho and his friends can be found working on their skills almost daily. “We skate every day; it’s really all we do,” said Will Smeltzer. And according to Ryan Evans, they like to go anywhere they won’t get kicked out, but their options are dwindling. “Just give us a rail, a ramp, and a box, and we are happy.”
Perhaps it is the arena itself that draws the skaters in. Tranz has 5,000 square feet of skate area, which encompasses a 5 foot half pipe, two 5 foot quar-

Hi-Tech Homes the Mission of New Local Technology Company Technology is constantly changing and improving, and the list of gizmos and gadgets one could buy to “modernize” a home is very extensive. Distinct AV, a relatively new company in the Geist/Fishers area, is here to service all of those needs. This business specializes in high quality technology for business or commercial residences, and according to owner Derek Cowburn, “We have some really impressive goods.” Cowburn came to Indy three years ago from New Jersey. He currently resides in Cambridge with his wife Lynn and three sons. “I did business commercial automation systems for 16 years, but I was already thinking about the home theatre business,” he said. His interest in the business stemmed from a childhood spent learning about computers from his father, who
opened its doors a few weeks ago in the Deer Creek Shops just off of I-69 at Exit 10. Cowburn feels that while technology can be intimidating to some, it should simplify life rather than complicate it. The showroom boasts a completely integrated system where the lighting ties into the security system, displays switch into DVDs producing images of current activities around town, and a mock bathroom shows displays behind a mirror. These are just a few of the unique projects Distinct AV can do for a home or business owner.
developed Cobalt, a computer language. As a teenager, Cowburn wrote a computer game and began writing software to help out his friends. This experience with the business led him to get his mechanical engineering degree from Clarkson University in New York. After college, when another job fell through, Cowburn began looking for a company to buy. After this proved to be a challenge in and of itself, he decided to piece together his own business plan. “I based it on market research of the area and I put together some connections, and now I am simply following that plan.”
One of Cowburn’s favorite designs was an Irish pub basement in which they installed a drop down screen in front of a cabinet with an already built-in television. “This customer really liked to watch movies on a large screen, so we designed

something where pushing one button drops the screen down and turns off the other television,” he said. Another customer requested bioscan technology, using fingerprints to unlock a door. “They wanted to let their kids in and out but were concerned about them losing their keys,” he said. “This was their solution.” “We are different because we are selling products and solutions the customer needs,” Cowburn said. They stock little inventory but are able to get products quickly, and the right products at that. “We look at a problem and give the customer a solution that does everything they ask. They get the most out of the hardware they are buying.” Cowburn said they are targeting those in the area looking for an upgrade or to finish their basement. “This is a great

He said that while the construction in the area has hurt a little, it is nothing compared to the hurt his Pendleton Pike location felt. “Business is actually better than I had

Business Picking Up at 116th & Olio Road Shops By Kimberly Laughlin The construction surrounding the area says it all: Geist is growing, and it seems everyone wants a piece of the pie. Businesspeople are taking note of the expanding number of schools and homes in the area, and they recognize the potential Geist holds. The shops popping up around 116th and Olio Road are just one such example of this growth. The area is new - still under construction - and is home to many new businesses hoping to serve Geist residents. Steve Hobson of Fishers Liquors said he spoke with several developers who told him opening a store in the area would be a great business move. “We offer 700 types of beer and 2,000 types of wine,” he said. “I thought the growing

These women, both of whom have young children, wanted to create a place parents can drop their children off without making an appointment. “We have only been open a week, and this is our only location, but we have gotten a very good reception,” said Tanya. “There are lots of moms and dads with young children in this area, and everyone seems to love the idea.”

Crime Watch Information I have been talking with several neighborhoods about the sex offender registry. Some neighborhoods in Fishers have registered sex offenders living in them and crime watchers have been researching websites to assist in gathering more information. I would like to thank our crime watchers for compiling this information and sending this to me. Local Horseback Riding Program Soothes Riders The horses, equipped with precious cargo, take off on a gentle trot. They make a slow circle around the arena, delighting their passengers. Volunteers help to keep the riders steady while parents and other family members watch from behind the gates. This unique program, started by McCordsville resident Elisa Bell, is for individuals with special needs, and according to those who bring the riders, it is very beneficial to their overall well being. Edelweiss was founded three years ago in Greenfield, Indiana, when Bell began speaking in churches and selling handmade jewelry to raise money. She had previously volunteered for two years in a similar facility and decided the “east central side of Indy really needed something like this.” Bell worked to get word out
and currently has 25 students with a waiting list of eight. The not-for-profit program runs smoothly thanks to donations and volunteers, including groomer girls who arrive early to get the horses ready for students. “I think this program is wonderful,” said volunteer
Carolyn Shryock. “I love horses, and I want to go into special education, so this is great experience.” Bell said that most of her clientele finds out about the program through word of mouth. “The challenged community has a lot of parent

networking because each family is trying to find something the rider can achieve,” she said. The horses are groomed before they are taken to the middle of the facility with the students on board. Activities include laps around the fenced-in area, stretching exercises, and basketball. Volunteers are trained and know about the proper support for each rider, and they know how to make them as comfortable as possible. “We also have some very special horses,” said Bell. “They go through extensive training and then a 30-day trial period. They are desensitized to certain things, which make them very capable.” Grace Johnson, one of Bell’s students, has shown progress in a short period of time. “We have seen improvement in her vocabulary, and it’s been a

St. Simon Royal Extravaganza Rounding Up Support
Past years have brought much success to this event, which is open to the public. With themes of “Feelin’ Groovy” in 2004 and “On Safari” in 2003, attendees can get creative with their attire while knowing their money is going to support a local church and school community. Last year netted about $150,000 in proceeds, and event coordinators hope these numbers continue to rise.
This fundraiser, which is in its sixth year, raises money for the ministries of St. Simon parish as well as the school. The auctions, both live and silent, will feature a wide array of items including a pickup truck courtesy of JD Byrider, travel packages, jewelry, condos, gourmet foods and home décor.
One portion of the evening sure to rope in more partiers is the raffle drawing.

Claire Pfleger, committee chairperson. “If you loved the festival, you will love the Royal Extravaganza.”
Get out those old cowboy boots, round up your partner and mosey on over to St. Simon on Saturday, November 12. It’s time for the annual Royal Extravaganza, and this year’s theme is “The Wild, Wild West.” The purchase of a ticket for $55 gains entry to dinner from Bella Vita, an auction, live music courtesy of Matt Roush, a full open bar and an all-around good time.

Tickets cost $100, and the lucky winner receives $10,000 in cash. “We think these are pretty good odds,” said Rick Pfleger, committee chairperson. In addition, there will be mini raffle drawings throughout the night with winnings of $100. Winners must be present to collect, though, so be sure to stick around! For an evening of good times for a good cause, call St. Simon at 826-6000 to order your tickets. Dress is casual and so is the atmosphere, so this will be a night on the town worth planning ahead for. And if nothing else, it may be the only time it’s socially acceptable to enjoy a martini while donning pigtails and cut-offs.

Back to School: Are Your Teens Immunized? By Dana Caylor, MD Olio Road Family Care Your teenagers have their backpacks, books, and number 2 pencils. But there’s something else they need before they can start school this year. A vaccination for hepatitis B. Since 1999, immunization for hepatitis B has been required for all infants as well as children entering kindergarten. But children entering grades 9 through 12 were not covered under that law. Today only 50% of our nation’s adolescent students are fully immunized. To remedy this situation, a new Indiana law went into effect this summer that basically mandates that all Indiana high school students be immunized for hepatitis B. Hepatitis B is a serious infec-
tion to the liver that results in the death of nearly 5,000 Americans each year. Out of the 80,000 new cases each year in the U.S., nearly 8% involve adolescents.
there are no adverse side effects to the immunization. The vaccine is safe and effective for all ages. Without doubt, hepatitis B is a serious disease. It’s why the Indiana state legislature is taking it so seriously. And why you should, too.
As a chronic disease, hepatitis B can remain dormant for years without recognition. This disease can be transmitted through blood, sharing needles or sexual contact. In addition, mothers who have hepatitis B can pass it to a newborn during delivery.
If you have a teenager entering 9th through 12th grade, or a child who has not been vaccinated, please, get them immunized. If you’re unsure about the status of your child’s shot record, check with your doctor. And for additional details concerning school entry requirements, contact your child’s school district or the Indiana Department of Education at www.doe.state.in.us.
The good news is that hepatitis B is now preventable, thanks to a simple vaccination. The vaccine is delivered through three intramuscular shots over the course of a 6- month period. Other than slight soreness,
