Matteo’s originally opened in March of 2003, founded by Italy native Matteo Di Rosa. He ran the restaurant until 2015, at which time Franco, who previously worked

at Fogo de Chao Brazilian Steakhouse in downtown Indy, and his business partner joined as co-owners. The food menu at Matteo’s ranges from classics like chicken parmesan, veal piccata and veal parmesan to main-course options like the Rondelli di Spinaci e Ricotta (a homemade pasta sheet stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach) and the Filletto di Bue Gorgonzola (a center-cut filet mignon baked in a puff pastry).

“Our signature dish is our Tortellini Matteo’s - it’s a homemade cheese tortellini with a white cream sauce, ham and mushroom,” Franco says. “That, as well as our daily lasagna specials, are by far our top sellers. Our ravioli is also spectacular. The former owner is from southern Italy, so the menu has a lot of things from that region. He also expanded to the northern parts, so our menu now is a nice mixture of the northern cuisine and the southern cuisine of Italy.” The drink menu includes red and white wines from all over the world, with an emphasis, of course, on Italian flavors from Sicily to Tuscany, as well as cocktails and several sparkling selections. “We have an amazing sweet, red, bubbly wine that is great for Valentine’s Day,” Franco says, adding that Matteo’s will feature classic live Italian music on Valentine’s Day this year. “It’s from Italy. People have really liked it here. We also make our own limoncello in-house - we use that for different martinis and even use it in one of our desserts.” Matteo’s also offers a separate catering menu for weddings, private off-site events and corporate functions. In December, the eatery catered a luncheon for approximately 1,000 people at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds for Hamilton County employees, for the fourth straight year. Originally from Itabuno, Bahia in eastern Brazil, Franco is a veteran of the restaurant industry, having worked in Central Indiana food establishments since 2002. “My mom is a chef and was always involved in a catering business, and I was always around that since I was a child,” he says. “The restaurant business has always been a passion of mine.” Franco adds that the local Noblesville community has been consistently supportive of Matteo’s since he joined as co-owner five years ago. “I worked in downtown Indianapolis for many years, and making the move to

From the get-go we felt like it was the right move.” The staff and leaders at Matteo’s stay involved in the local community in several ways, including hosting fundraisers and making monthly donations to local charity organizations. When asked what helps to make Matteo’s stand out among other restaurants in Central Indiana - even just in Noblesville - Franco has no hesitation in answering. “It’s the authenticity,” he says. “Most of our items here are homemade - even the cheese that goes on our Caprese salad is made in-house. The bread and desserts are made in-house as well. We take pride in our Italian culture, and that really makes us stand out. Plus the owners are here all the time, shaking hands and getting to know people. We’re very fond of this community.” Matteo’s Ristorante Italiano is located at 40 North 9th Street in Noblesville. and this cookie is particularly good,” Shockey says.

A tasty piece of Americana, the first Girl Scout cookies were home baked by Girl Scouts back in 1917 and sold in waxed paper bags.

Cookies sell for $5 per box and include Do-si-dos, Girl Scout S’mores, Samoas, Tagalongs, Thin Mints, Toffee-tastic and Trefoils. The organization also participates in Operation: Cookie Drop to support local military members, military veterans and first responders. Last year more than 76,000 packages of Girl Scout cookies were donated to the cause.

“We see the cookie program being that one cornerstone activity that enables girls to learn a great number of entrepreneurial skills,” says Danielle Shockey, CEO of Girl Scouts of Central Indiana. “When they sell cookies they’re learning communication, sales, supply and demand, marketing, social media presence, manners and tenacity.” This year the Girl Scouts are excited to introduce a new flavor to their lineup Lemon-Ups, a crisp, zesty lemon cookie. “We’ve had some advanced taste testing,

“These military men and women tell us that when they are overseas, receiving these cookies is like a piece of home,” Shockey says. All proceeds from cookie sales stay local in central Indiana, and each troop decides how to spend proceeds. They may choose to put it toward philanthropy, or they may save

it each year so that they can go downhill skiing in Colorado or take a backpacking adventure at the Grand Canyon. “Girls often choose outdoor adventures that involve canoeing, hiking, rappelling, archery, horseback riding and zip lining,” Shockey says. Last year Girl Scouts of Central Indiana troops earned more than $2 million in troop proceeds to fund their activities, buy supplies and support service projects in local communities. Last year Girl Scouts of Central Indiana provided more than $312,000 in financial assistance, in an effort to make the program available to any girl interested in participating. entrepreneurship. The curriculum for scout badges is aligned to state standards and often written by partners who are experts in their fields. For example, some of the curriculum for cybersecurity badges is written by Raytheon. North Face provides part of the curriculum for outdoor adventure badges. “Girl Scouts USA works with the people who know their content,” Shockey explains. “And they work with us because we know the developmental, social, emotional and academic needs of girls.” Sometimes partners are troop leaders, and other times they are university partners or leaders in a particular field. For instance, if a girl wants to earn STEM badges around engineering, she might learn from an engineer at Caterpillar. The Girl Scouts organization releases new badges frequently. Last July it released over a dozen new STEM badges. “We want to make sure the content behind our badges is maintaining the pace of technology changes, so we introduced gaming badges - teaching the coding behind how to make a virtual reality program,” says Shockey, noting that her organization strives to incorporate subject matter that is of interest to girls today. For Shockey, one of the most beautiful occurrences is when girls are unafraid to take risks, fail, and try again. The Girl Scouts present the Gold Award to dreamers and doers who change the world in a positive way. “The big variable to earning the Gold Award is that it has to live beyond them,” Shockey says. “It’s something that has to exist in the future beyond them to make the world a better place.” Shockey tells the story of Sophie, 15-yearold Zionsville resident who, after watching a documentary about the Holocaust, decided to dig deeper to learn more. She researched Holocaust survivor Eva Kor, who suffered terribly in the Auschwitz concentration camp and yet ultimately 10 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2020 / atNoblesville.com

HEALING AFTER A HEART ATTACK After suffering a heart attack, it is normal to feel scared and confused. Many people want to know the next steps they should take to heal and how they can avoid future heart problems.

“Most patients survive their first heart attack, but individuals who have had a heart attack are at increased risk for a second one,” explained Dr. Lambert. “Choosing to make healthy lifestyle choices greatly reduces your risk of a first or second heart attack. Avoid smoking and tobacco, participate in regular physical activity with approval from your doctor and make nutritious food choices. Taking care of yourself is your best defense against future health issues.”

Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Offers Mentoring Program to Help Inmates Transition to Life Upon Release that his participation as a mentor for the TOWER program was a natural extension of the organization’s longtime work with In 2016, the Hamilton County Sheriff ’s inmates through their Overcomers Program. Office was one of 10 applicants in the nation who were awarded a LEAP grant through “As a faith-based program, our model has the U.S. Department of Labor Employment ever been to walk alongside as many of these and Training Administration. This grant, men as were willing to be led,” Melton says. later labeled the TOWER program, “Having been called to seek out ‘the least included an employment skills class, along of these’ through TOWER, we have gained with a volunteer mentoring program—a an opportunity to potentially increase our component that was added to the grant influence in men’s lives by the example of our application on the insistence of thenown. My co-laborers and I were once counted Captain Jason Sloderbeck, who felt strongly among ‘the least,’ so we model what we that the mentorship piece was instrumental learned when we were willing to be led and in successfully acclimating ex-inmates to life trust those coming behind us to do the same.” post-incarceration. As word spread about the program, Initially, mentors were solicited through community members and local businesses volunteers who were already associated began to express an interest in becoming with the Chaplaincy program, such as the mentors as well. “We determined that it would be best suited for the program to be under the Chaplaincy division,” says Kelly Gunn, Project Manager with the Hamilton County Sheriff ’s Office. “Plus, our hearts were more for the mentorship component, so we ceased the employment skills classes and focused heavily on the mentorship and case management component.” The department follows stringent criteria to invite mentees to join the program because they want to be sure they are in the right mental frame of mind to actively participate and be compliant with what’s asked of them. On average, they receive 5-6 applications per month. Gunn helps inmates who are deemed appropriate for the program with transitions planning by working through their housing situation and employment placements. She also offers referrals to recovery services.

“Basically [we address] any kind of barrier that would deter them from being successful as they transition back into society,” Gunn says, who partners with several local Hamilton County employers that participate in job fairs hosted at the jail. Gaylor Electric has offered to enroll participants in their four-year apprenticeship program. Custom Concrete has also hired several mentees. “They don’t necessarily have to have particular skills to be hired,” Dunn says. “The top three things the employers tell the mentees they are looking for is someone who is dependable, can get to and from work, and show up ready and willing to learn and do the work that’s asked of them.” The mentorship piece of the program allows appropriate candidates to be paired with a mentor — they meet face-to-face in the jail prior to their release. The mentor becomes an encouragement and support to the mentee as they walk the journey of trying to re-integrate back into the community and into their family. “A lot of these folks have burned many bridges in their personal lives to where they don’t have a good support system on the outside and so that mentor becomes a large support for them,” Dunn says. “Some of them have lost the ability to stay with family members or maybe they have lost all of their possessions, so I link them to social service referrals that are needed for them be successful.” Dunn works closely with agencies like the Good Samaritan Network of Hamilton County, Inc., the Noblesville Township Trustees offices, and other agencies that can help her get these needs met. “We try to wrap around those services and not encompass just the mentee but the family, as a whole, because if they have a wife or children at home or they are supporting their parents, with them being incarcerated, their whole family takes a huge hit,” Dunn says. 20 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2020 / atNoblesville.com

Sheriff Dennis Quakenbush says the purpose of the program revolves around the safety of Hamilton County. “Anything we can do to make these participants more successful benefits the community from a safety perspective of them not committing crimes, from a financial perspective of them not coming back to our facility and costing the taxpayers additional money, and ultimately from a family perspective of getting them more ingrained in the community,” he says. The sheriff ’s department is still looking to obtain long-term funding for the program as it’s currently being funded by businesses and the Chaplaincy program. This means they need financial resources to keep the program going. “If there are businesses, not-for-profits, or church groups that would like to help, it would certainly be a good place to put your money,” Quakenbush says.

So we thank and respect the families of veterans too.” Kahlo Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram is located at 9900 Pleasant Street in Noblesville. Call 317-565-4256 or visit hellokahlo.com for more info.

Suburban Indy Home & Outdoor Living Show Returns Feb. 7-9 Writer / Braden Ochs Photography Provided

From February 7 through 9, the Home and Outdoor Living Show put on by Suburban Indy Shows will come to Grand Park Events Center in Westfield. The show was originally conceived to connect suburban Indy homeowners with local businesses for landscape, improvement and building needs. “The home show helps local companies introduce themselves to local homeowners who need their services,” says Donell Walton, owner of Suburban Indy Shows.

Suburban Indy Shows holds two home shows every year. This year will include shows in February and September. Walton launched the first show in September 2017 at Grand Park. The Home and Outdoor Living Show will feature something for everyone. There will be over 200 exhibitors, including local businesses and contractors ready to meet homeowners in the area. Exhibitors will be available throughout the show to talk to anyone interested in their services. “If you don’t have any projects to do, come and enjoy the stage presentations,” Walton

says. “Dream of all the things you can do in the future.” Stage presentations sponsored by Belgard, a paver and hardscape company, will include Dr. Lori’s Free Antique Appraisal Comedy Show, Fox 59’s Junior Meteorologist Experience for kids ages 6 to 12, and special kids’ events all day on February 9. If approachable business representatives and fascinating presentations don’t excite your interest, there will be plenty of opportunities to shop and explore additional local businesses and artists. products, foods, Indiana-based clothing and fashion, and handmade furniture will be available for purchase. For children, February 9 will likely be the best day to visit. Children 12 and under will receive free admission on any day of the show, but February 9 will be especially geared toward children and parents. There will be plenty of fun activities including a dinosaur show, a tea party with princesses, a magician, glitter tattoos and more. Friday and Saturday will also feature kids’ activities including a bounce house. “It’s a good way for kids to get rid of some cooped-up energy in February,” Walton says. Hours for the Home and Outdoor Living Show are February 7 and February 8 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; February 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will be held at the Grand Park Events Center in Westfield. Tickets are $5 online and $10 at the door. For more information, visit suburbanindyshows.com.
