NOBLESVILLE’S LARGEST BUSINESS SHOWCASE RETURNS FOR 2019 This year’s Taste of Business/Made in Noblesville event returns to the Embassy Suites on Thursday, April 11 from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. The Noblesville Chamber of Commerce is looking to build off last year’s success as over 1,000 people were in attendance. This event is a great chance for businesses to showcase themselves to the community. Last year, over 90 businesses and 15 restaurants offered chef ’s samplings.

Candidate Conversations based on content and time restraints. The next Candidate Conversations event is on March 11, where the theme will be Noblesville places and things, which includes infrastructure, parks, districts, and destinations. On April 8, the four candidates will tackle the Noblesville economy and finances, including city Noblesville Mayoral Candidate budgets, capital improvement plans, and Conversations series offers residents insight into candidate’s campaign platforms economic development.

According to Noblesville Chamber President and CEO Bob DuBois, “Our goal is to have the chance for the community to gather and celebrate itself, as well as stimulate some business relationships and have some fun.” Last year’s Taste of Business/Made in Noblesville was described by The Times of Noblesville as a “first-class event.”

The first of three Noblesville Mayoral Candidate Conversations took place on February 11 at Noblesville High School. Mayoral hopefuls Vince Baker, Mike Corbett, Chris Jensen, and Julia Church Kozicki informed a crowd of over 150 residents (and many more who streamed the event live on Hamilton County Television) about their views and visions for Noblesville specifically as it related to Noblesville people and places.

A few special opportunities for this year’s event include Made in Noblesville exhibits, sponsored by the City of Noblesville Economic Development. Taste of Business/ Made in Noblesville will also feature an Artisan & Craftsman Alley, which will allow local artist makers to show off their original and innovative creations. As Taste of Business/Made in Noblesville draws near, the Noblesville Chamber encourages businesses to register their booth or restaurant as soon as possible. Come be a part of celebrating our phenomenal city!

“The Noblesville Chamber and League of Women Voters want to provide citizens of Noblesville the opportunity to learn about each candidate’s vision, leadership approach, public policy positions, and specific plans to advance our city,” DuBois emphasized. Details about each of the three events can be found at noblesvillechamber.com.

Bob DuBois, Noblesville Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, believes this is a unique opportunity for Noblesville residents to help shape the mayoral conversation. “The Noblesville Chamber, in partnership with the League of Women Voters, has created an online portal to accept questions. Noblesville residents can submit questions for the Candidate Conversations series via a form on noblesvillechamber.com. Questions will be carefully selected for the 2 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atNoblesville.com

DRESSED for SUCCESS N E W ME N’ S CLOTHING S HOP, ANT HONY LEIGH, OPENS IN NOBLESVILLE Writer / Julie Young Photographer / Julie Montgomery

When commercial airline pilot Ryan Anthony Lynch and non-profit enthusiast Coltyn Leigh Miller created the concept for their men’s boutique, they wanted to establish their venture in small towns where men’s fashions were at a minimum and community at a premium. The result is Anthony Leigh, a cultivated clothing shop for men specializing in all occasion apparel, accessories, fragrances and gift items.

“We started in Auburn in May of last year, but we realized early on that we wanted to be in a bigger market where we could offer more personalized customer service,” Miller says. “We opened in Noblesville on December 1, and today we have four locations in both Indiana and Ohio.” For their formal-wear clients, Anthony Leigh offers a customized on-site measuring service at the customers’ place of business with a discount on any large orders. When the clothing arrives, Anthony Leigh

delivers the garments so that the client does not have to go out of their way. For the casual consumer, Lynch and Miller work with a number of designers and makers throughout the county to bring some of the most on-trend looks to the Hoosier market. They have recently added a small women’s and girls line to their stores as well. “One thing that everyone seems to like is the 13-by-9 inch maps of Noblesville, Indy and Fishers,” Miller says. “They come in black, white and green and have proven

to be very popular. We also offer some graphic tees and have created our own brand as well.” But clothes are only the conduits to Anthony Leigh’s real mission, which is to help youth reach their potential in whatever capacity the community needs. They host the occasional catered shopping night, which is a ticketed event that helps support a local organization. For $50, guests can enjoy food from Grindstones and shop until they drop with a portion of the sales going to the non-profit of the night. “We also offer internships for high school and college students who want to get into fashion or who want to learn about marketing and business,” Miller adds. “We also have ambassadorships for students who are not looking for a full-time job but who are willing to post on social media for us in exchange for the occasional free merchandise. There is a criteria that they have to meet in order to become one of our ambassadors, but we are willing to champion these future influencers and help them get their start.” Like the young people he strives to help, Miller understands the desire to “fast track” his career. He graduated high school in three years and, by the age of 20, was a bank manager. He attended college online and at night balancing his work with his education and his ever-expanding career. At the present time, he is pursuing his master’s degree through Grace College. atNoblesville.com / MARCH 2019 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 5

“I see the struggles that the youth of today face,” he says. “There is high demand, but not enough mentors to help these kids out. I remember going to networking events and giving out my card but rarely was there any follow-up. Now when I attend these things, I make a point of following up with these kids one way or the other.” In addition to the Anthony Leigh stores, Lynch and Miller own some self-serve

GREAT

yogurt franchises as well as a youth aviation organization. All of their enterprises are self-funded and some of their non-profit partners include Riley Hospitals for Children, the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club. “We have no loans and no debt so we only believe in putting our money in ventures that work,” Miller says. “We don’t have time to see how it goes for a few years. If

it’s not working, we cut our losses and try something else. Luckily, Anthony Leigh has been well-received by the community and we love being here. Our customers are super excited about the products and services we offer as well as our overarching mission and that is why we are in business.” Anthony Leigh is located at 982 Logan Street in Noblesville. Forest Park & Fox Prairie Golf Courses Offer Consistent Greens & Affordable Pricing For Local Golfers Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided

Pristinely beautiful, well-manicured and immaculately maintained are phrases that are often used to describe the two municipal golf courses that are under the auspices of Noblesville’s Parks and Recreation Department. Dedicated staff has ensured these public facilities continue to keep a country club-like appearance. For many years Forest Park Golf Course,

701 Cicero Road, and Fox Prairie Golf Course, 8465 East 196th Street, have provided an enjoyable and affordable outdoor experience for area residents.

a parcel of land was eventually donated to the city, Fox Prairie was built on it in 1970. Originally it was an 18-hole course, but later nine additional holes were added in 1995.

Each course has an interesting history. Ninehole Forest Park opened in 1927 and is the oldest golf course in Hamilton County. In the 1960s, the sport boomed and local demand for golfing increased. The course could not be expanded because it would encroach on the park portion of the tract which, at the time, included an arcade and small train. When

Curt Brisco has worked for the Parks and Recreation Department in the golf division for the past 30 years. Eleven years ago, he became Golf Course Superintendent and oversees both properties. Although he has seen interest in golf fluctuate over the years, Brisco feels Noblesville’s golf courses have a lot to offer.

atNoblesville.com / MARCH 2019 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 9

“I got in the golf business literally through the flip of a coin,” Brisco says. “I was working for Colonial Bakery and they had to downsize. Another employee and I tossed a coin to see who would keep their job. I lost but found employment as a second assistant at Fox Prairie Golf Course through an ad in the Indianapolis Star. “In the 1970s and 1980s, some businesses in Noblesville would close each Wednesday at noon. People such as doctors, lawyers and bankers came out to the courses and played. Today, free time seems to have gotten squeezed out of people’s lives, but I feel the courses, especially Forest Park, have a loyal following. Our price point for the value a golfer gets is great.” Each season, there are duel challenges to meet — financial sustainability and battling nature. While Brisco is in charge of making the courses playable, Mike Hoffmeister, Assistant Director of Noblesville Parks and Recreation oversees the monetary aspect. “Both are in fine shape year in and year out, but mother nature is always somewhat of a problem,” Brisco says. “Keeping the turf on a green to a height of .125 inches, when in its natural state the grass would grow to a height of eighteen inches, puts stress on it.”

C U R T B R I S CO

“The financial part is a big challenge,” Hoffmeister adds. “It takes a lot to run a golf course and make ends meet. The course is sustained by fees charged for playing golf, renting carts, the driving range and snack bar sales. Currently, we are exploring ways to create non-golf revenue to make up for the financial challenges.” The cost to play a round of golf at either Forest Park or Fox Prairie varies according to the which course is chosen, the time of day and whether the patron elects to rent a cart. Differing levels of season passes are available. These options range from a $20 patron card entitling the holder to a two-dollar discount for nine holes all the way to 10 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atNoblesville.com

$2000 for unlimited play and golf cart usage. Prices for walk-ons span from $14 for nine holes during a weekday to $49 for playing eighteen holes on a weekend morning while riding in a golf cart. Both venues have a golf shop as well as a snack bar that sells hot dogs, cold sandwiches, soft drinks and beer.

Compassionate ER care when you need us most

Golf lessons for all ages are taught at the Fox Prairie course. They are overseen by Gary Deakyne, Director of Golf and given by golf pros John Mohler and Mary Rabb. “It’s hard to give just one benefit of learning how to playing golf,” Deakyne says. “Players have to call penalties on themselves, so responsibility, respect and playing by the rules are important. Golf is a game for a whole lifetime. It can be played whether someone is eight years old or 95. Everyone gets the enjoyment of being outside.” Both Forest Park and Fox Prairie have a long tradition in the Noblesville community yet they continue to offer residents a fresh golf experience. Due to the growth of mature trees and the changing landscape, players can feel a new challenge each time they play the courses. “In my opinion, Noblesville has the best golf courses around Hamilton County, if not the entire state,” Brisco says.

Mayor John Ditslear

NOBLESVILLE 20/20 MAKING NOBLESVILLE A MAJOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT POWERHOUSE Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photography Provided by Amy Payne & the City of Noblesville

In January 2020, a new mayor will be sworn into office, bringing to a close the administration of Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear after 16 years of service – the longest-tenured mayor in the city’s history. Since 2004, the city has steadily grown in population. Its borders have expanded and the community has transformed “from cornfields to corporations” while preserving the small-town charm of its historic downtown that is an important part of Noblesville’s identity. In this first edition of the Noblesville 20/20 retrospective series, Noblesville Magazine will reflect on this transformation through the lens of economic development. “You don’t have to look far to see the obvious signs of our economic growth,” Ditslear says. “Whether along Conner Street, State Road 37 or near Corporate

Campus and I-69, business is booming in every area of our community.”

– manufacturing, office, research and development – you name it.

That kind of growth doesn’t happen on its own according to Judi Johnson, director of economic development for the city.

“Our secret to attracting and growing such a variety of businesses has been our ‘whole life’ philosophy,” Ditslear says. “We want to help businesses start here, as well as to stay here and continue to grow.”

“You do it by proactively working to move people and product into your city,” Johnson says. An early win for Ditslear in the retail market was attracting Simon lifestyle mall’s Hamilton Town Center, which opened its first store in 2008. The project was a major catalyst that ushered in explosive development for the city made possible by extending 146th Street. Later years, the city saw further growth in the I-69 area with the addition of Cabela’s, Duluth Trading and other retail stores, restaurants and hotels. Like Noblesville’s eclectic retail market, which ranges from family-owned, mom-and-pop shops to national chains, its other industries are just as varied

With that in mind, the Mayor launched the STAY HERE GROW HERE business retention and attraction program with resources for companies to help with everything from workforce development to site selection for new facilities as they expand operations. Japanese-based SMC, a leader in pneumatic technology, moved its North American Corporate Headquarters to Noblesville in 2009 and have expanded twice since. The 2.5 million-square-foot facility employs more than 950 workers and produces the pneumatic parts that provide the muscle behind automation through automated control technology.

Helmer Scientific manufactures medical equipment and devices. Their relocation from the Stony Creek Business Park and expansion to the Saxony Business Park in 2007 helped establish Noblesville as a hub for medical device manufacturing and pharmaceutical research. Joining Helmer in 2015 was Zevacor Molecular, a cutting-edge manufacturer and distributor of radiopharmaceuticals and home to the nation’s first commercial 70 MeV Cyclotron.

WITH EVERY PROJECT, WE ASK OURSELVES – IS THIS RIGHT FOR NOBLESVILLE? MAYOR DITSLEAR

Verdure Sciences is a botanicals company that researches and manufactures plantbased solutions for pharmaceutical applications. They moved to Noblesville in 2002 and, in 2018, built a new headquarters in the Metro Enterprise Business Park – the same year they achieved a 40-percent increase in sales growth. Meanwhile, Noblesville has grown its identity as a hub for the tech industry as well. Local firm BlueSky Technology, a leader in e-commerce and digital marketing, opened for business in 2006. By 2017, with the city’s assistance, the international company accomplished its goal of expanding operations under one roof with an ultramodern, 42,000-square-foot headquarters adjacent to the city’s new urban park, Federal Hill Commons.

When BorgWarner was interested in consolidating two existing facilities in Madison County, the company chose Noblesville for its new Indiana Technical Center. The 100,000-square-foot facility opened in 2018 for research and development of new combustion, hybrid and electric vehicle technology, bringing with it 300 high-tech, high-wage jobs. Another part of Noblesville’s success is due to the growth of its hospitality and tourism industry. With the opening of the new Embassy Suites Conference Center at Olio Road and Tegler Boulevard, Ditslear fulfilled his promise to the business community by adding a worldclass conference center. Noblesville now has limitless opportunities to attract conferences from across the nation with nearly eight acres of real estate and 29,000 square feet of meeting space and amenities. Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center continues to attract popular musical talent and in 2018 was ranked as the world’s top concert amphitheater. No other concert amphitheater in the world sold more tickets in 2018 than Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center, bringing in hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. And all of these companies have helped support the hundreds of other businesses, large or small, throughout the community. “I joke that my golden scissors have gotten a workout with all of our ribbon cuttings,” Ditslear says. “But as more and more businesses open their doors, it leads to the growth of supporting industries. Not only does Noblesville’s diversified economy feed off one another for financial gain, they

provide innovation to one another in the form of new ideas and product generation.” This growth of the city’s economy through business attraction and retention is only half of the picture. The investment in infrastructure and the growth of business has brought a tremendous boom in population. Since Ditslear took office in 2004, Noblesville’s population has grown 57 percent to more than 61,000 residents in 2017. As a result of Noblesville’s economic development success, the assessed value of all commercial and residential property has skyrocketed since 2004 by 134 percent – to $6 billion. While growth and change are exciting, such efforts on the part of the city must be handled with great care. “With every project, we ask ourselves – is this right for Noblesville?” Ditslear says. “It’s our responsibility to ensure we’re moving our city forward in such a way that doesn’t lose sight of what we are about. I believe we’ve accomplished that for today’s residents and with future generations in mind as well.” The Noblesville 20/20 series will continue in the June issue with an indepth look at the growth of the city under Mayor Ditslear due to the investment in Noblesville’s infrastructure.

JOCELYNN WAGY SPONSORED BY:

Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Ellie Sophia Photography

In many ways, Options Charter School student Jocelynn Wagy seems like a typical high school sophomore. Bubbly and charming, she is glad to share her interests as well as talk about her life as a teenager. Yet, there are several aspects about her that are truly unique. Wagy is a definite lover of the arts. She enjoys dancing but not the same genre of dance as most of her age group. People usually identify her choice as ballroom dancing featuring the waltz, foxtrot or quickstep. However, she has another name for it. “I call it ‘old style,’” Wagy says. “I’m basically selftaught, but in 2018 I started taking classes.” Another passion is a love of drawing. Although Wagy is quick to point out that she enjoys many different mediums for producing art, her favorite tool is a pen. She excels at black and white drawing. “I like to draw a shape, such as a circle, and then turn it into a character,” she says. As the older sister to two female siblings ages two and five, family is important to her. In between her interests of dancing and art, she helps out at home and watches her sisters after school. “I try to help out my mom and look after my sisters as much as I can,” Wagy says. “We also have three dogs, and I care for them too.” 16 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atNoblesville.com

When asked about her school experience, Wagy exudes enthusiasm. She transferred to her current school, Options Charter School in Noblesville as a second-semester eighth grader. Most teens would approach changing schools in the middle of the year with dread and she was no exception. Fortunately, she feels the transition was an easy one and is happy she had the opportunity. “I really love my school and I love my school family,” Wagy says. “I thought it would be the hardest thing to transfer, but it wasn’t stressful at all. When I first walked in, I noticed the walls were covered in art. It was very colorful. I thought it was the best thing I’d seen in years.” Wagy, who has dyslexia, was struggling in her former school. It was her mother who felt that smaller class sizes would benefit her. Wagy agreed to give it try and was pleasantly surprised that the school cultivates an atmosphere of complete acceptance. “Differences are accepted at Options,” she says. “Everyone is different but all are accepted. Everyone has a story to tell and absolutely no one is bullied. It ends up being a very happy place to be. One of the best things about it are the teachers. They never give up on anyone. Owner Amber Noone

LOCAL SHOP OFFERS SMALL TOWN CHARM & TIMELESS FASHIONS Writer / Jane VanOsdol Photographer / Glenda White

Many business owners start their ventures with a complete business plan in place and all the boxes ticked on their business launch to-do list. That was not quite the scenario for Bash Boutique owner Amber Noone. In November 2014, Noone heard about an available space in a renovated historic building in downtown Wabash, Indiana. At that time, Wabash was in the beginning phases of a renaissance, spearheaded by Lisa Gilman of Redemption Development. Noone looked at the 650-square-foot space on a downtown alley and promptly fell in love. Much to the surprise of others who thought this a poor business decision,

Noone, “on a whim,” went for it. Bash Boutique, short for Wabash, launched its grand opening to a standing-roomonly crowd and closed the day out with phenomenal sales. Eighteen months later, business was booming, and Noone moved to a prime location on Market Street, more than doubling her space.

BUSINESS GROWTH The business was such a success that in 2016 Noone opened a second location in Westfield. Westfield was in the midst of its own small business growth and was an area she was familiar with. Noone found and renovated a house on Walnut Street, off the beaten trail, and the popular shop became known as “the hidden gem boutique of Westfield.”

Growth continued and, in September 2017, Noone launched her third shop, this time in Noblesville. The common denominator of all three locations is that each one is in an intimate community. “For all of my stores, what I love is the smalltown charm, the collaboration with other businesses, the events,” Noone says. “A lot of the businesses depend on each other.” And indeed, this business model has been highly successful for her. One more change was in store, and that was a change of location for Bash Boutique Westfield. In July 2018, feeling like she was losing customers to the hidden location, she snapped up storefront space that opened up

on Main Street and moved the few blocks to her new, highly visible space.

SHOP TALK Noone’s love of shopping small town stores influences her selection of goods for her own stores. As she would travel for her full-time job as a salesperson, she was always exploring boutiques in towns she passed through, noting their style and lines of clothing and gifts. “I love to shop local and like to fill my store with things that speak to me and I’m passionate about,” she says. Noone has cultivated an extensive line of women’s clothing, accessories, jewelry and gifts and describes the style as sophisticated, classic and timeless. “I want my customers to have their things for a while,” she says. She looks for versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down. Each store features the same brands and branding but different styles so that people can shop all three locations and find something unique in each one. Her branding focus is simple, sincere and sweet. Each store is similarly decorated in a subdued decor of grays, blacks and whites, which gives a peaceful ambiance. “I want the clothing to take on the life of the store,” Noone says. Here are a few featured top brands: • Joseph Ribkoff • Liverpool Jeans Company • Tribal • Comfy Lysse • Brighton® Jewelry • Ambre® Blends perfume

PERSONALIZED ATTENTION Noone believes the key to her success is due to the individualized attention each customer is offered. “People will come in and say ‘I’m going to a concert or on a date or on a work trip. Outfit me,’” she says. She loves to help build outfits and trains her employees in this skill as well. It’s a goal for “customers to leave loving what they buy.”

PRIVATE SHOPPING PARTIES Bash Boutique also offers private shopping parties where the hostess and her friends get the whole store to themselves. The hostess receives a 20 percent discount on purchases and friends get 10 percent off. Contact each store for details or email wabashboutique@gmail.com. As for what’s new, customers can now purchase clothes online at BashBoutique.net. The Noblesville store also now carries men’s jeans. Might Noone have plans for a fourth store? While she’s not sure yet, she does have her eye on a few small-town locations if the opportunity arises. “I don’t want to grow too fast,” she says. “I want to make these three as good as they can be.” Bash Boutique is located at 110 E. Main Street in Westfield. You can call the Westfield store at 317-867-1490. The Noblesville store is located at 884 Logan Street or you can give them a call at 317-674-8573.
