A LETTER FROM THE MAYOR OF NOBLESVILLE Photo provided by Hamilton County Tourism
companies to three significant business park developments – Campus Center, Bergen Industrial and Washington Business Park. We are working to establish a strong economic identity with medical technology and manufacturing sectors as key areas of focus and striving to provide larger numbers of mid and high wage jobs. Welcome to Noblesville! Now the 10th largest city in Indiana, Noblesville is continuing to grow and thrive as a city while retaining its “home town feel.” We are home to fantastic amenities including six public parks, over 100 miles of trails, Hamilton Town Center mall, our distinctive historic downtown square and the outdoor music venue Ruoff Music Center. The city also is home to the Millers and our award-winning Noblesville Schools system. I am a lifelong resident of Noblesville and am honored to have the opportunity to serve and shape its future. As mayor, my vision is to be proactive, not reactive. My administration is focused on four major pillars – Workforce and Economic Development; Downtown, Culture and Recreation; Public Health and Safety; and Roads and Infrastructure. We have launched significant development/ redevelopment projects and are attracting
Our downtown is a treasure, but one that needs preservation and enhancing. The city also is in the middle of building several public-private development projects that increase our downtown livability and provide immediate density and energy along with new commercial and retail space. These projects, which total more than $145 million of downtown investment, include the Lofts on Tenth, Federal Hill Apartments, Nexus Apartments and East Bank. Infrastructure improvement projects are a priority to address both current and future needs of our community. We have partnered with INDOT to transform intersections along State Road 32 into free-flowing roundabouts and are moving forward with plans on the Pleasant Street corridor project, which will begin within a year. The improvements we are making are wise investments that improve public safety and will make it easier for motorists to get where they need to be, when they need to be there. 6 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / APRIL 2022 / TownePost.com
Our goal every single day, is to ensure that our community is a safe, open and welcoming one. A community focused on helping out everyone who is a resident or visitor here. As mayor, I hope that you’ll take some time to explore our city and discover for yourself why Noblesville is a unique place and a growing community – one that has been nationally recognized as a great place to live, work, play and retire. And finally, we would love to hear from you! Please reach out to me or a member of my team with questions or suggestions that you may have for enhancing our city for current and future residents. Sincerely, Chris Jensen Mayor

KEVIN AND PALMER AULT
Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Kevin Ault and his son Palmer both have the distinction of being named a “Mr.” in Indiana high school sports. It’s a title both the Aults, who have lived in Noblesville since 2008, have enjoyed thoroughly. Kevin, a business development manager at Jack Laurie Group in Indianapolis, was named Indiana Mr. Basketball while at Warsaw High School. It was a positive experience he will never forget, and there were many positive memories that he treasures. “It was quite a thrill to be named Indiana Mr. Basketball, among the names of so many players I looked up to,” Kevin says. “I didn’t play basketball for individual awards, but it sure felt good being recognized with such a prestigious honor.” Kevin had a great time playing for his team and developing strong friendships with his teammates.
High School in December, has also valued his title as Indiana Mr. Soccer. He credits the people on his team as a key part of his success.
“What I remember most was the opportunity to play with friends that I had my entire life,” Kevin says. “Advancing to the final four our senior season in 1996 was an “It’s a great honor, but I wouldn’t have been incredible experience for our team, school able to accomplish it without my teammates and community.” and coaches,” Palmer says. Palmer, who graduated from Noblesville TownePost.com / APRIL 2022 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 9
Kevin believes that he and Palmer are the only father and son to both be named a “Mr.” in Indiana. “As far as we can tell, we are the only father and son to accomplish this,” he says. Palmer has been playing soccer with many of his friends since they were in elementary
school. “My teammates and I had a goal, since we were 10 or 11 years old, to win a state championship at Noblesville, and last fall we were able to make that dream a reality,” Palmer says.
Palmer is already working hard toward his future goals. “I now work and train full time with Indiana Fire Academy, and Indy Eleven on an Academy contract,” Palmer says.
Palmer also has his college plans set. “I have been accepted into the Lacy School of Business at Butler University, where I’ll also play soccer,” he says.

s Bill Benner reflects on a career of 40-plus years as an Indianapolis Star sports reporter and columnist, Butler University professor, communications and public relations director, and coorganizer for many major sporting events in the city - a career, by the way, that is in many ways as productive as it ever was, but more on that later - he remains extremely optimistic about the future of sports in the Hoosier state and Indianapolis in particular. Such optimism has merit. After all, Indy is again playing host to this year’s NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament and has been home to numerous NCAA Men’s and Women’s Final Fours, the 1996 and 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials for swimming, and of course Super Bowl XLVI. “I was fortunate enough to be at the Star as Indianapolis evolved as a sports city, and
was almost the primary person assigned to write about the formation of the Sports Corp, the building of major venues, the attraction of the NCAA and Pan Am Games, and so much stuff that has happened here in Indy,” says Benner, who served as co-chair of the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee’s media relations committee, as well as on organizing committees for numerous NCAA Final Fours. “The city has come through on all of it, and will continue to do so.”
had back in the ‘70s - Jim Morris and Ted Boehm and a host of others - going back to the building of Market Square Arena,” Benner says. “They had a vision to turn Indianapolis into a sports capital and make the investment with the arena, and then the Hoosier Dome, and attract the NCAA and bring Final Four here. All that led up to the Super Bowl, and then we had five consecutive Big Ten basketball tournaments, Final Fours, and now, of course, March Madness.”
Benner says Indy’s development as a major sports city can be traced back to the forethought and planning of several local leaders, around the time Benner himself was starting out as a sports reporter at the Indianapolis Star.
Benner, an Indy native, came up through the Center Grove school system, and learned fairly early on that writing, particularly of the reporting variety, came naturally. He wrote for the school paper and yearbook in the latter part of his high school years, and by the time college rolled around he had obtained an evening job as a score boy with

He was given a few small duties writing headlines and reporting game results and eventually “Score boys worked with the sports took on an assignment in August of 1968 department and gave out scores when covering a Greenwood woman who had people would call in wanting to know Pacers won the national table tennis championship. or college football scores, or horse race Thus, he secured his first byline as a results,” Benner explains. newspaper reporter.
then on I stayed in the sports department,” Benner says. “In the following years they would let me go out and cover high school games, and I was hooked.”
By the end of his freshman year Benner had developed a relationship with Cyrus “Cy”
In the mid-1990s Art Levin, chairman of Butler University’s journalism department at the time, reached out to Benner about joining the faculty as an adjunct sports journalism professor. Benner developed a curriculum and taught at Butler from 1995 through 2004, drawing on his reporting knowledge and experience.
“Cy edited that story and worked it over, but thought it was pretty good, and from

Benner finished up his journalism degree at IU-Bloomington after a stint in the Army, and went on to work at the Star until 2001, writing as a full-time columnist beginning in 1990.

In 2001, Benner began as a sports columnist for the Indianapolis Business Journal, a position he would continue until 2013. Around the same time, he also decided to explore a few different career avenues and became vice president of communications for the Indiana Sports Corporation, while working for Visit Indy in a sports capacity. In August of 2013, he got a call regarding a job with Pacers Sports & Entertainment, eventually serving as both senior vice president for corporate, community and public relations, and also de facto executive director of the Pacers Foundation. In 2020, Benner stepped away from his
role with Pacers Sports & Entertainment after seven years, and continues to serve on several boards, including Special Olympics Indiana, the Finish Line Youth Foundation, and the Pacers Foundation. Nowadays, Benner tries to spend as much time as possible with his wife Sherry, their children Allison and Ashley, and two grandkids William and Emma.
haven’t been a full-time basketball writer since I left the Star, so for them to reach back into the archives and honor me like this is a tremendous thrill.” Benner feels Indy is more than ready to handle the logistics, crowds and fanfare of another NCAA March Madness - and he should know, having written about and helped organize so many of Indy’s major
“I love the mountains out west, and we have a place in the mountains in Colorado, but I’m still a Hoosier at heart,” he says. As for Benner’s accolades, the list is lengthy - he was twice awarded Indiana Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (now the National Sports Media Association). In 2017, he received a Sagamore of the Wabash award from the governor, which is Indiana’s highest individual honor. Last spring Benner was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame, of which he was president from 1998 to 1999. The induction ceremony was held during the Final Four in Indianapolis. “I’m so honored by it and elated,” he says of his Hall of Fame honors. “It was a total surprise to me. After I left the Star I continued to write for Indianapolis Business Journal, but I truly

sports events. “I don’t think there’s any other city that could do it,” he says. “Every time we’ve hosted a major event - a Final Four, the Super Bowl, the World Championships for gymnastics - Indianapolis has always raised the bar. I have no doubt that will continue to be the case.”

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Quality counts, but so does community. When you can get both quality and community wrapped into one experience, it’s the best of both worlds. That’s precisely what you get when you contact the team at Hometown Window & Door Company, certified professionals with more than 30 years of experience in working with Indiana homeowners. The four co-owners, Darren Peck, Dan Hanlin, Mitch Brown and Andy Brown, all bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, energy and commitment to the table. “He has installed tens of thousands of windows and was a top sales rep for 36 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / APRIL 2022 / TownePost.com
Renewal by Andersen,” says Scott Dorrell, sales manager for Hometown Window and Door. “Now he’s part-owner and GM of the company.” Andy Brown has been installing Andersen windows since he was 15 years old. Andy’s father, Mitch, also has a background rich with experience. For instance, he owns a number of Liberty Tax franchises. He also owns multiple Pure Barre fitness studios. As for windows and doors, he’s done pretty much everything you can imagine. He wanted to be a part of Hometown Window and Door Company to bring a better customer experience to the Indianapolis market than what is currently offered. “He’s worked on the phones, he’s been a sales guy, he’s been an operations manager, he’s been an installation manager,” Dorrell says. As for Peck and Hanlin, they were high school friends who decided nearly 35 years ago to start a commercial cleaning company — an endeavor that over time morphed into Indiana Restoration & Cleaning Services, a Noblesville fixture for more than 30 years. Peck & Hanlin started Hometown Roofing Team in 2018 in response to their insurance agents — customers needing qualified and honest, ethical inspections of hail-damaged homes when unscrupulous, out-of-town companies come into town pressuring homeowners to sign contracts they’re unable to get out of. In February 2022, the four Hometown
owners decided to purchase Clevernest, an Andersen window dealer located in Carmel. Becoming a dealer allowed them to offer more options at better prices and provide the consumer with a better customer service experience. The dealership-status enables the team to sell to new construction, product only, offer service to existing Andersen customers, and full-service white-glove installation. After acquiring the Clevernest dealership, they renamed the company Hometown Window & Door Company to put an emphasis on the hometown feel. They provide a large selection of window styles, shapes and lines to coordinate with any type of home. Hometown Window & Door carries Andersen window and door products. Andersen Windows & Doors was incorporated in 1903 and is the oldest window and door company in the United States. They use only national, top-rated brands and offer a non-prorated and fullytransferable warranty on their windows and doors. The warranty is one of the best in the industry. “Andersen Window invented all kinds of firsts,” Dorrell says. “They invented doublepane glass. They invented the PermaShield process, and they invented Fibrex composite material. Andersen Window has just been huge innovators in the window and door industry. We have a really neat company history in the Andersen brand, and now we are able to bring it to market and give people a full-service, hometown experience.”

To help celebrate community, they are offering Hamilton County residents a special hometown deal to commemorate the hometown brand absorbing the Clevernest brand. “The guys wanted to do something special for the people in the community so we are giving 25% off to anybody who purchases windows in the next few months,” Dorrell says. Peck, a lifetime resident in the Noblesville community, has served on boards of Prevail, Noblesville Main Street, Fifty Club, & Harbour Trees. He has attended Noblesville First United Methodist Church for 50 years and married to Monica for 23. Hanlin and his wife Michelle, who have been married for 20 years, have been active members at Saint Maria Goretti Parish for 26-plus years. The pair are also members of the Bridgewater Gold Club. In addition, Hanlin serves the community as a volunteer pilot
for Angel MedFlight, an organization that flies the sick and their families to hospitals for treatments. Peck and Hanlin launched the Hometown Window Team in 2018 in response to the housing boom that occurred in the late 70s when a burst of homes were built with wood windows that 40 years later were beginning to fail. “There was also a need for quality replacement windows for homes built in the 70s and 80s. I saw outside companies coming in and giving high-pressure, highdollar sales efforts, which I find completely inappropriate,” Peck says. “We, on the other hand, are looking to just work in and around Hamilton County because we’re committed to offering a better, more competitive service for those homes that need updating, whether that be windows, roofing, or siding.”

“Darren and I are committed to providing a quality customer experience — the same commitment that we have operated the Restoration business by for the last 33-plus years,” Hanlin says. Peck and Hanlin are thrilled to partner with a company known for quality. Andersen’s windows and doors are unsurpassed for beauty, quality and value. There are fullframe wood and aluminum products but also the versatility of composite windows. They’re available for commercial as well as residential applications. “We look forward to installing Andersen products in downtown Noblesville,” Peck says. “Our concept is new in that in the residential replacement market we are offering people a full-service, white-glove installation with an Andersen dealer, all of the Andersen options, and the Andersen
quality with certified master installers,” Dorrell adds. “Generally, you don’t have dealers doing the installation, but our craftsmen are trained and experienced in estimating and installing windows of all types. When you sign a contract with Hometown, we handle everything. That includes consultation, listening to the homeowner, design, manufacturing,
installation and the service.”

Customers love it because they never have to deal with a third party as they always work directly with the Hometown Windows Team.

TASTE THE DIFFERENCE THE BROKEN BARREL OPENS ABOVE WOLFIES ON MORSE Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Daren Short
Since Wolfies opened in 2004 it’s been a favorite local bar and grill for tasty in-house burgers, sandwiches, ribs and more. Three years ago the Wolf family, which includes Owners Scott and Nyla and their children Alec and Ansley, decided to expand by opening the Broken Barrel, a lounge and cocktail bar that serves high-end, handcrafted cocktails with 100-plus bourbons. In December of 2021 they opened their third Broken Barrel, located upstairs from Wolfies on Morse Reservoir. “I don’t know what’s wrong with us,” says Area Director Alec Wolf with a chuckle. “We just keep opening more.” The truth is that they are catering to the wishes of their clientele who absolutely adore the atmosphere that the Broken Barrel provides, which Wolf describes as
a kind of escape. They can seat about 40 guests in barstools, booths, tables and cozy lounge furniture. “You can come with a large party and enjoy a booth setting, or you can come with one other person and sit in comfy chairs by the fireplace,” Wolf says. “I really feel like we’ve TownePost.com / APRIL 2022 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 41
tapped into something special here.” For starters, their jaw-dropping view is like no other in the state. “Being able to oversee a huge reservoir right in front of you while sitting in this RalphLauren-esque atmosphere, on nice cushy
couches with a good cocktail - that’s hard to compete with,” Wolf says. “Sometimes you forget you’re in Indiana.” In addition to the cozy atmosphere, they offer top-notch service. Plus, though their cocktails are high end, people can still afford them. “We try to stay within a budget that’s manageable and transferrable from being downstairs to being up here,” Wolf says. “People don’t feel like they’re being priced out, going into a new setting.” Wolfies often has a wait on weekends, so the staff invites guests to head upstairs. Sometimes they relax there until their table downstairs is ready. Other times they opt to just stay put. “We’ve started to see a more regular clientele come in the front door and immediately make a beeline for the upstairs,” Wolf says.

Though their menu changes quarterly, they do have a few cocktails that stand out and stand the test of time. One is the Tobacco Old Fashioned, which consists of Woodford Rye, simple syrup, orange and liquid smoke. “It has a smokey finish with that classic Old Fashioned sweet cocktail forward,” Wolf says. Another popular choice is the Peanut Butter & Jelly Old Fashioned, which has Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey, Luxardo cherry liqueur, Angostura bitters, freshsqueezed orange and cherry. “It’s unique - something you’ll never experience elsewhere,” Wolf says. “This cocktail will bring you back.” Their definition of classic cocktails means they’re actually using ingredients that bring those cocktails back to their original style. “These days, most people who ask for a whiskey sour, it’s coming out of a gun with sour mix,” Wolf says. “We make ours in-
house with Buffalo Trace bourbon, fresh lemon juice, fresh simple syrup, and fresh egg white to create that frothiness that makes our cocktails really signature.” The Wolfs love running their restaurants and bars because of the reactions they get from customers. “When they are thanking you on the way out, you know you’ve met or exceeded their expectation,” Wolf says. The family is also committed to community outreach, which is why in 2015 they started a bible study called RIBS (Restaurant Industry Bible Study).
where a pastor and a musician come out to their beer garden from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. This year they may move the weekly event to Saturday since they are closed on Sundays.
offer special-event tastings.
“We always have a good turnout,” Wolf says. “Usually around 200 people attend.”
The Broken Barrel is located at 20999 Hague Road in Noblesville. For more information, call 317-219-6521 or visit thebrokenbarrel.com.
Additionally, at the Broken Barrel they purchase whiskey barrels and occasionally
“We’re a faith-based company and we recognize that all of our achievements come through faith that brought us here, so we want to give back to the community in a way that falls in line with our walk,” Wolf says. RIBS was created to share the Wolfs’ values and morals, and give those around them an opportunity to participate as well. “My parents have a barn on their property,” Wolf says. “This is a chance to enjoy fellowship with our staff, find out what’s going on in their lives and bring them to Christ.” They also do a “Worship on the Water” event at the Wolfies at Geist on Sunday mornings from June through September,

“People can buy tickets for these events, which are paired with a chef,” Wolf says. “It’s a really cool experience.”

THERAPY DOG LUNA JOINS NOBLESVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Luna, a new therapy dog with the Noblesville Police Department, is now out and around the city helping people. Benjamin Lugar, patrolman first class with the department’s support division and NobleACT officer, says Luna serves a valuable purpose. “Therapy dogs provide individuals with a safe avenue to explore emotions and overcome adversity during crisis events,” Lugar says. “Therapy dogs help break down barriers to communication. By combining emotional support and therapeutic interventions, such as nuzzling and laying on the lap of someone in crisis, therapy dogs can help reduce anxiety and stress, in addition to biological stressors like heart rate, blood pressure and breathing.” Luna meets a lot of different people in her job. “We expected the community members and officers she supports to respond positively to her,” Lugar says. Lugar did some research before bringing Luna on board. “In researching therapy dog programs, 44 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / APRIL 2022 / TownePost.com
I saw how effective they can be at deescalating crisis situations and providing much-needed emotional stabilization in people,” Lugar says. “K9 Luna will operate in a dual capacity, serving both our internal officer wellness programs as well as our community-focused programs through NobleACT.” The City of Noblesville joined forces with the Noblesville Police and Fire departments to create NobleACT, a program aimed at mental health issues and substance abuse. The NobleACT team conducts communityfocused outreaches, community education trainings and community awareness events. Lugar notes that Luna is the premier therapy dog for the department. “K9 Luna will be a first for the Noblesville Police Department,” Lugar says. “To my knowledge, we are the first police agency in Hamilton County to utilize a therapy dog.” Luna is currently in training at Ultimate Canine in Westfield. “K9 Luna came to the department on February 23 for three days of training and certification with her handlers here,” Lugar says. “K9 Luna will have one primary handler, myself, and three secondary handlers - Chief of Police John Mann, Sergeant Brice Swart, who oversees
officer wellness, and Tiffany Davis, who is the Noblesville Fire Department’s community resource paramedic. This will allow K9 Luna to serve in multiple capacities.” Luna has received a very warm reception from the Noblesville community. “We are excited to welcome K9 Luna into the Noblesville Police Department’s family,” Lugar says. “She will be a valued addition to the NobleACT program and to the Noblesville community.”

Three reasons why a mammogram is an important part of your preventive health
1
A mammogram can save your life. Early detection of breast cancer can increase a woman’s five-year survival rate to 97%.
2
It doesn’t take much time. Mammograms are a quick procedure, only taking about 20 minutes.
3
Your risk of developing breast cancer increases as you age. The older you get, the more you are at risk of developing breast cancer. That’s why mammograms aren’t a one-and-done test.
Mammograms are vital to your health and longevity as a woman. Indiana University Health recommends routine screening mammography to improve the likelihood of detecting breast cancer early. If you have specific questions about your level of risk for breast cancer, schedule an appointment with your primary care provider.
Our Safe Care Pledge Rest assured your safety is our utmost priority. At IU Health, we want to assure you that we are taking thoughtful steps to make sure our spaces remain safe for everyone. How we’re keeping you safe at each IU Health care facility:
