RIGHT ON TIME: INDIANA RESTORATION & CLEANING SERVICES, A NOBLESVILLE STAPLE FOR 30 YEARS
Darren Peck and Dan Hanlin were high school buddies who decided 30 years ago to start a company together. Though it started out as a commercial cleaning company, the business has evolved over time. The commercial cleaning led to carpet cleaning, which led to water damage, which led to fire damage. Working with homeowners, insurance professionals, property management companies and business owners, Indiana Restoration & Cleaning Services restores homes and businesses damaged by flood, fire, smoke, sewage, storms and other disasters.

Pro-gard President Mike Navarro.
PROTECTING THOSE WHO PROTECT US PRO-GARD CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF CREATING LAW ENFORCEMENT PRODUCTS Writer / Josh Lowe . Photographer / Amy Payne
Noblesville business has just turned 50. From its founding in 1968 to the present day, Pro-gard has kept its sights on a single mission: keeping police officers safe. Pro-gard began as a small company simply making partitions to separate police officers from detainees. Now the company makes 35 products, from partitions to gun racks designed for police cars that service the law enforcement community. “The police car is essentially their office for the day. They need to be safe, protected and efficient in their job,” says president Mike Navarro. Navarro has been on the job at Pro-gard since 2005. Since then, the company has diversified its product line from making a one-size-fits-all model. As police departments adopted new lines of vehicles, Navarro and his team visited Detroit to learn about the new models. Pro-gard’s engineering department eventually built partitions and other products that would fit various models of police cars. Pro-gard gathers feedback about its product not just from its 400 distributors but also local departments, from around the country to around the world. Once the ideas are communicated, Pro-gard gets to work on prototypes and designs. In fact, Pro-gard owns different models of police cars, allowing them to test their product in a practical environment before implementation. Pro-gard has continued to diversify its products as the industry focuses on officer safety. For example, the company developed a new version of a seatbelt that would allow officers to buckle detainees without reaching across them, often exposing the officer to potential harm. To Navarro and his team, the company’s expansion of the product line is a major success. “We need to be strong, reliable and secure,” he says. “Our products need to be all those things to the officers in their absolute worst moments.”
Pro-gard’s mission is to help officers do their job quicker, faster and safer. This vision drives the creation of new products. The company’s newest partition features an integrated ballistic shield, easily detached to provide protection when officers serve a warrant or enter a hostile situation. “Our ability to be responsive and quick is a significant success,” Navarro adds. Pro-gard now looks to the future, the next 50 years. “We’ve been around a long time, so 50 years gives departments a level of trust and reliability.” Indeed, the company is proud to make its new home in Noblesville. Everything is assembled, made and processed in Indiana. “We serve a community that serves us,” Navarro says. “I think that’s kind of cool.”

BIRKLE REALTY GROUP 939 Conner St, Suite 200 Noblesville, Indiana 46060 317-214-6056 birklerealtygroup.com
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Amy Payne
Last year, seasoned realtor Jessica Birkle started her own real estate company so that she could combine her two passions: people and mission work. In March 2017, she launched Birkle Real Estate in order to help clients buy and sell their homes while also doing a good deed. The realty group donates 10 percent of its commission to the 501(c)3 nonprofit of their client’s choice. For example, a $300,000 house would typically yield a $900 donation.
“I love reaching out to those in need,” says Birkle, who conceived of the idea after getting involved with her church’s outreach ministries and wanting to make a difference in her own community. “It has definitely been something that has changed my life in more ways than I imagined,” says Birkle, noting that it’s not just about writing out the checks to nonprofits — which have included such charities as the Wounded Warrior Project, the Humane Society and the Ronald McDonald House Charities —but 10 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atNoblesville.com
also about the stories behind the chosen charity. For example, one client donated to the Megan Ott Foundation (Megan was a local mom of two small children who passed away from breast cancer at 34). The client cared for Megan when she was a patient at the hospital, and their friendship inspired her to find a way to pay tribute to Megan’s legacy. In another case, a couple donated $2,400 to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation to honor the wife’s father who had battled the disease. “At closing, she told me how she felt like her
dad was a part of process as she purchased her dream home,” says Birkle, who is touched that clients are willing to be vulnerable enough to share their personal stories. “I feel fortunate that my team and I get to know our clients on a totally different level.” That team consists of five people, all of whom share Birkle’s philanthropic spirit. Though the agents are contractually obligated to donate at least 10 percent, they can give up to 30 percent and sometimes do. “All my agents have a huge heart for service and for people,” says Birkle, who recently visited Operation Love to make a donation. While there, the staff mentioned that consumers to their food pantry often don’t choose canned goods because many don’t own can openers. “I’d never thought about that, but once I learned of this need, I’m on a mission to collect can openers,” Birkle says. She also plans to pick a different organization each year and fix up their building by painting and restoring it. Speaking of renovations, Birkle chose to renovate an office space in downtown Noblesville to save on cost. “Instead of spending money on the big office and the fluff, I’d rather donate that money,” she says.
“All my agents have a huge heart for service and for people.” - Jessica Birkle
Serving Noblesville, Fishers, Westfield, Carmel, Cicero, Indianapolis, McCordsville, Fortville, Pendleton, Anderson, Alexandria, Zionsville, Avon, Brownsburg and other surrounding areas, Birkle Realty Group is the first charity-based realty company in the state. Birkle, for one, would like to see other companies follow suit. “I’m really hoping more businesses will step up and do the same thing,” Birkle says. “It’s incredible.” Birkle Realty Group LLC is located at 939 Conner St., Suite 200 in Noblesville. Knocking on doors trying to get anyone to take a chance on his business took a while, but once he did, he was able to build one of only a few jewelers that had a full-time staff dedicated to creating custom jewelry, working on repairs and creating custom molds. Once his wholesale business was developed, he took the next step of opening up a retail store in 1998. Achieving his dream of creating a successful jewelry business over a 20-year period is what gave him the ability to recognize the hard work, vision and effort that Mann was doing to fulfill her dream. The partnership was formed and along
with it an opportunity for the public to know more about Pippa and her commitment to not just the IndyCar racing series but Indianapolis. The social media contest will result in one lucky winner receiving a $500 shopping spree at Master Jewelers. The contest was announced on Facebook and is also on Instagram and Twitter. Mann has selected seven different pieces of jewelry that she will be wearing throughout May. All that the public needs to do is “catch” Pippa wearing jewelry in the month of May and snap a photo. These pictures or videos can come from any media outlet, including news, websites and Pippa’s social media networks. The only catch is that the picture or video must have been posted or published in the month of May. Most important, the entries must include the hashtag #SpottingPippasPicks to be eligible. In addition to providing beautiful jewelry to one of the most widely recognized female race car drivers in the world, Master Jewelers is also dedicated to offering beautiful jewelry, custom and designer, along with modifying any custom jewelry that you already own. So when you are racing around looking for a beautiful piece of jewelry to wear, need help repairing a special piece or to create custom jewelry, give Michael Neylon a call at Master Jewelers at 317-623-8692.

Jacqueline Navedo, the Noblesville Ivy Tech Community College Student of the Month, believes a strong education will help her fulfill her dreams. She also believes strongly in her fellow students and encourages them to be dedicated to their school work, find their purpose and
get involved in numerous campus activities. Navedo says that the staff at Ivy Tech will gladly help students get involved in many student organizations that fit their unique personal interests. Navedo exemplifies the kind of outgoing student the staff at Ivy Tech enjoys putting in the spotlight. She didn’t just put minimal effort into her school work. She completely dedicated herself to it.
“My degree is in Liberal Arts, and I am excited to be graduating from Ivy Tech,” she says. “I have been able to achieve my goals through attending classes and working hard.” Navedo served as Vice President of student government at the Noblesville Ivy Tech. “As a leader, I was here to engage the students with school events and service

Navedo appreciated how Ivy Tech Community College is a full-service campus that has the services and classes available to help you be successful. Navedo’s next step is to attend Western Governor’s University. “I will be getting a double Major in Education and in Special Needs,” Navedo says. “I’m really looking forward to it.” Navedo says she would not have obtained her objectives without her teachers at Ivy Tech.

Staying Community Focused Get to Know New Noblesville Main Street Executive Director Lorna Steele
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Ron Wise
Lorna Steele believes that the way to engage the community is through events, people and programs. So she’s thrilled to be named the new director of Noblesville Main Street. A twoyear resident of the town, Steele, 27, graduated from Indiana University in 2013 with a degree in tourism, hospitality and event management. Since graduation, she’s been utilizing her skills in both the Fishers and Noblesville Parks & Recreation Departments. “I love people and am passionate about affecting their lives in a positive way,” Steele says. Over the past five years, through these jobs as well as volunteer work with Young Life (an organization whose mission it is to introduce adolescents to Christ and help them grow in their faith), Steele has bonded with the people here, making this job the perfect fit to align with her values and passions. “There’s a tight-knit sense of community in Noblesville that’s rather unique,” Steele says. “I see how important community is to our officials and the organizations who are involved in the city. Events foster that sense of community and enhance our overall quality of life.” Steele says that although work is important, so is recreation, and that getting outside, talking to people and building relationships are all crucial to maintaining a healthy community. “I’m excited to get to know more faces in the downtown area — to make new partnerships and foster old ones,” says Steele, who suspects that this closeknit kinship has evolved from folks participating in so many of the beloved programs that are hosted by Noblesville Main Street. Noblesville still has that small-town feel, which is something the downtown store
owners cater to. Though Steele recognizes the huge boom for economic and commercial development, she thinks the greater draw is the ability to go downtown and run into friends at the coffee shop. Steele encourages residents to approach her with any ideas for ways to improve or expand Noblesville Main Street. She even plans to occasionally visit the local high school cafeteria to pick the brains of the student body. 26 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atNoblesville.com
“I’d love to work with the high school’s innovations class and get them involved with bigger picture ideas,” says Steele, noting that while she works for the city government, she’s eager to serve small-town business owners, single moms, big families and energetic teenagers. She’s also eager to share what she calls one of Noblesville’s “best-kept secrets”— the fact that Noblesville is an accredited cultural arts district.
There’s a tight-knit sense of community in Noblesville that’s r ather unique. I see how important community is to our offic ials and the organizations who are involve d in the c ity. - L o r n a S t e e l e , Nobl e svill e Main Stre et Exe cutive Dire ctor -
“We have so many amazing artists in town,” Steele says. “We even have a cultural arts director who organizes all things art.” Kiln Creations holds pottery classes for both adults and kids. Nickel Plate Arts is in the process of closing an alley so that they can provide some interactive art activation on the walls. There’s also a big downtown amphitheater that offers a distinctive twist — musical instruments are built into the back of the stage, allowing kids to explore music by playing the instruments. In addition, the city is planning a Wine Down & Art, as well as other art fairs and shows. Steele and longtime boyfriend Abe recently bought a house in West Harbour where they live with their Yorkie Poo named Violet. Steele loves to travel, hike, read and hang out with her five sisters. She also enjoys seeking out “hole-in-thewall” bars and restaurants, which invariably are hidden treasures of the culinary world. It all comes back to the people, the places, the camaraderie and the culture. “At the end of the day, we all crave that sense of community. It’s in our nature,” Steele says. “Bigger than that, we want to feel connected to the place we live. Noblesville is the perfect size for that because it’s big enough that we have great things going on but also small enough that you can show up to the Farmer’s Market and run into 10 people you know.”

“We didn’t like how, following a hail storm for instance, outside companies from other areas would swoop in and take advantage of homeowners who had just experienced tragedy,” Peck says. “We’re a local company who wants to take care of the people of this community.” Not surprisingly, they have a lot of repeat and referral business. “That’s a credit to our employees,” says Peck, who notes that their 25 employees have the right values and do the right things. “And if we don’t do it right, we will make it right without hesitation,” he says. This mentality is crucial given that his team is called to help people often when they are in the midst of their worst-ever life situation.
They were solely concentrating on the cleaning restoration and remediation side of things when customers began asking the coowners if they would help repair their homes following disaster. That’s why they launched the roofing replacement part of the business. The crew at Indiana Restoration & Cleaning Services has to be atNoblesville.com / JUNE 2018 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 29
ready to take care of anything that can happen to a house or commercial building — and respond at any time. “We’ve had to deal with everything from nine feet of water in a basement to a variety of accidents,” Hanlin says. “That’s stressful to have to be available at all hours of the night. Our employees have to be mentally and physically prepared to respond at a moment’s notice because if you’ve got water running, you can’t wait until Monday morning.” A few years back, 10 Indiana Restoration & Cleaning Services employees had to respond to a commercial call on Christmas Day when there was water damage due to a frozen pipe. “Of course nobody wants to leave their families on a holiday, but our employees are dedicated professionals who are ready to help any customer in dire straits,” Peck says. “In fact, it seems like every Christmas, there’s water damage somewhere.” He recalls getting a call one Christmas morning from a frantic house sitter who turned on the sink and was surprised when water sprayed out of the faucet and shot all the way to the ceiling. “It was like a scene out of a sit-com only this was real life,” says Peck, who is adamant about giving both his time and money to 20plus non-profit organizations in and around Noblesville, including Riverview Health, the Boys & Girls Club and Prevail (a victims’ assistance organization, of which Peck serves on the board). In addition, Hanlin volunteers for Angel MedFlight, an organization that flies sick people and families who can’t afford to travel to hospitals for treatment. Both Peck and Hanlin are seasoned pilots. In fact, they co-own a Beechcraft Bonanza that seats four, the aircraft Hanlin uses to transport patients. In addition, Peck owns a 1942 Boeing-Stearman, an open cockpit trainer from World War II. Indiana Restoration & Cleaning Services recently expanded their offerings by starting a new division called the Hometown Window Team. It’s in response to the housing boom that occurred 40 years ago when bunches of homes were built with wood windows that are now starting to fail. “Now there’s a need for quality replacement windows, and again I saw outside companies coming up and giving high-pressure,
high-dollar sales efforts, which I find completely inappropriate,” Peck says. “We, on the other hand, are looking to just work in and around Hamilton County because we’re committed to offering a better, more competitive service for those homes that need updating, whether that be windows, roofing or siding.” Whenever there is extensive water damage to a structure, it’s imperative to start the drying process immediately to keep mold from growing. “Unfortunately, what we often see is that people try to dry things themselves and though they think they’ve succeeded, they haven’t because you can’t use the back of your hand to check and see that something is completely dry,” Hanlin says. “They are unknowingly

leaving things wet, which causes secondary issues that lead to longterm problems such as mold.” Mold can often lurk beneath carpeting and behind walls or trim and often goes undetected until a homeowner wants to put his house on the market and a home inspector discovers mold. “Then it becomes a problem you have to deal with right away,” Hanlin says. Eradicating mold is important to one’s health but particularly for the elderly and very young, both of whom are more susceptible to respiratory issues. Peck, who has been married to his wife, Monica, for 19 years, has two children: Sydney, a high school freshman and Alexander, a sixth-grader. Hanlin and his wife, Michelle have five kids: Vanessa, Rachel, Mariah, Kelsey and Sam. When Peck and Hanlin are not working or flying the friendly skies, they’re often doing volunteer work or hitting the golf course. They’re also heavily involved with their children’s sports teams. “We stay plenty busy,” Peck says. “There’s a lot to do around town.” For more information about Indiana Restoration & Cleaning Services, call 317-776-9942 or visit indianarestoration.com.
