NOBLESVILLE 20/20: PAVING THE WAY TO BETTER INFRASTRUCTURE IN NOBLESVILLE

Since Mayor John Ditslear took office in 2004, Noblesville’s population has grown by more than 20,000. During that time the city’s roads, alleys and major corridors have seen steady improvements and enhancements, as the mayor has made infrastructure a key priority — both to ensure the safety of residents and to foster continued commercial and residential growth throughout the city.

arcus McMahon, owner of Mammoth Barber Co., says he wants everyone who stops in his place to kick back, relax, and get the full barber shop experience. “We feature high end products, free beer, and great tunes of every genre,” McMahon says. “It’s a very relaxed environment where our barbers can flourish in their craft.” Men are always looking for a barbershop they can count on. They will become repeat customers if they like their haircut, it’s affordable, and they like the staff. McMahon believes Mammoth, which opened earlier this year, meets all of those requirements, and is unique because of Mammoth employees’ attention to detail. “Clients will never be rushed out the door,” he says. “We will also be hosting weekly classes for our employees and finding only those who see what we do as art, to be employed.” McMahon started his barbering career in Fishers, but soon relocated to Austin, Texas. “I worked at some of the most popular shops there, and truly developed an understanding of how hair works,” McMahon says. “I learned utilizing a head shape to determine the best look for each client individually. When I returned to Indiana, I taught classes at the school I graduated from and worked at some of the more prominent barbershops in Indy, as both a barber and the director of barber education.” McMahon has been barbering for over seven years, as well as educating for the last four years. He has learned a number of barbering techniques that have transformed his shop appointment book into a thriving list of over 70 clients. He believes that if you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.

McMahon noted that his vision at Mammoth “is to provide a service that you can take pride in.” Mammoth specializes in modern and old school barber techniques. McMahon and his staff execute classic styles, progressive styles, and “a few things in between.” Mammoth’s prices are very reasonable. An individually tailored haircut is $30. A beard shave is $25. A haircut and beard shave, a “wombo combo,” is $45. A “classic and refreshing” shave is $30.

Compassionate ER care when you need us most

McMahon says he enjoys working in Noblesville and believes it was a very wise choice to open a business in a welcoming environment. “I chose Noblesville because, first, it’s where I grew up, and second, the lack of modern barbershops in the area,” McMahon says. “I wanted to bring really great hair to Hamilton County.” He also wanted to bring his “craft, passion, and vision to Noblesville.” McMahon added that Mammoth offers all levels of excellence and wants everyone to experience a great haircut. McMahon loves Indiana, and truly believes it is a great place to grow up and meet friends. “I live in Indianapolis with my beautiful wife, Stacie, and our two Schnauzers, Piper and Ponyo,” he says.

ooks & Brews, an Indianapolis staple and unique establishment that features a combo of craft beer and quality books, is expanding and opening a new location in Noblesville at Hamilton Town Center. While the first Books & Brews opened off of 96th street in 2014, the franchise has experienced exponential growth in recent years. New locations have been added to downtown Indy, Broad Ripple, Brownsburg, and Muncie, to name a few. The Noblesville location will be the most recent addition to the list of Indy area Books & Brews. It originally opened as a local business with an innovative idea on how to reach the community by creating a place that served as brewery, bookstore, and community center all in one. Books & Brews has now become a popular and well-respected business that has enjoyed rapid growth in the past 5 years by providing a meaningful service to the people of Indianapolis. Seeking to touch on ideas that promote community and conversation, all locations feature a wide array of used books for sale on shelves around the store, taps pouring house-brewed craft beer, board games, live music, trivia nights, local fundraisers, and tables where customers can get to know each other. Each Books & Brews location serves as a community hub that allows for the sharing of ideas and fellowship and provides a “place for people without a place,” to quote the mission statement of the business. The owner of the new location, Jordan Fox, hopes to build off the successes of past locations while also implementing new ideas to give the location its own unique identity. “I think it’s (Books & Brews) a destination within the mall for families to come to, something totally different than what’s in the area,” said Fox. “Collaborating with the other family friendly places in the mall, we want to make it a spot for families to go out and enjoy the day, spend time with their kids, and just for people to meet each other and reconnect. We’re a very different breed; we don’t have tv’s in our location, so you truly have to sit there and connect with the people around you.”

While Fox is not the original founder of the company, her and her husband have been customers of Books & Brews since the early days of the business, enjoying it as a date spot in years past, and now as a family getaway with their young daughter. When the opportunity arose to open the Noblesville location, it was a natural fit for Jordan to run it considering her history with the company, and there are new elements in store for the location. “I think the most important thing is people know that we are family friendly, and it’s just a place to reconnect with friends and family, or even a first date,” said Fox. “It’s such a low-key, fun environment that no matter what the occasion, I hope people come in and enjoy local beer, local food, and just interact with the people around them.” The Noblesville Books & Brews is slated to open later this month, and the location will be at 13230 Harrel Parkway Suite 100, in Hamilton Town Center.

ASPEN OUTDOOR DESIGNS

Bring the inside out! A growing trend is bringing your houseplants outdoors to your patio in combination with your annuals. We are seeing lots of green plants such as bird of paradise, palms, monstera, etc. play off the boho trend in wicker pots, terracotta and ceramic. Be sure to acclimate your houseplants to the outdoors and be mindful about your shade or sun requirements. Also, be prepared for them to thrive in the humid months outdoors! Dual-purpose pots! Use your patio pot to kill two mosquitoes (and hopefully more!). Carnivorous plants, mosquito repelling plants and beneficial herbs not only look great, but also putting in extra work so you can relax without swatting at bugs. Try planting marigolds with a citrosa (the leaves smell just like citronella) and pop in a scented geranium all great for repelling unwanted insects. Basil, rosemary, and lavender are all useful herbs that keep flies and mosquitoes at bay and an added bonus to whatever you have on the grill that evening.

“Outdoor Living” is the current buzzword in the Landscape Design/Build Industry. Over the past decade, the need for more elaborate outdoor living spaces has drastically increased. There are several elements which can be used to create your perfect outdoor room. From bistro lights strung over the patio to the ever-popular fire feature, the sky is the limit… unless you are enticed by a roofed structure. Recent trends have also shown the desire for larger pavers used in patios. The days of 6”x8” tumbled pavers or poured concrete has been replaced by slab pavers as large as 24”x36” and manufactured to last 30+ years with minimal maintenance. Outdoor cooking and dining have always been popular but recent improvements in mosquito control have made those bug-infested evenings enjoyable. Whether you are enjoying your time on a patio or composite deck, no space is complete without interesting plantings. Every year, new plant introductions bring better disease resistance, increased bloom periods and repeat blooming to the designer’s pallet.

Go monochromatic! We are seeing a growing trend of various shades and textures of the same color all in one window box or patio pots. The result is striking! Favorites include yellows, purples and pinks. I personally went with yellows for my back deck choosing bidens, strawflower, calibrachoa, coleus and a kiwi dracaena spike. We tucked in some Lysimachia for a chartreuse pop! Ultimately, have fun with all the possibilities and enjoy your outdoor space!

Whether you are in need of a new outdoor living space or just want to spruce up an existing space, contact a professional for assistance. A good landscape designer will listen to your initial ideas, ask a lot of questions, and offer ideas of their own. However, be prepared to pay a fee for a professional design and be sure to plan your project months before your desired completion date. Happy Outdoor Living!

Mayor John Ditslear

NOBLESVILLE 20/20 PAVING THE WAY TO BETTER INFRASTRUCTURE IN NOBLESVILLE Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Amy Payne

“Infrastructure is a key component to the success of a city because it impacts so many areas,” says Ditslear, adding that Noblesville has grown from 174 road miles in 2004 to 298 miles in 2018. “Without connectivity, public safety would have issues responding to emergency calls in a timely manner,” he adds. “Attracting

businesses and development is more difficult if your roads are cracking and failing. Sidewalks and trails provide residents with place-making, physical activity and a chance to be outdoors in a safe environment.” Under Ditslear’s leadership, Noblesville has spent a total of $30.5M on its annual street rehabilitation program to address the most necessary infrastructure needs within the city. Under the program each year, city engineers view all streets and alleys and complete an inventory. Once each road is evaluated and graded, a street rehabilitation list is made based on priority. “We make every effort to address the areas most in need and use public dollars wisely and efficiently to address those needs,” says Assistant City Engineer Jim Hellmann. 18 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2019 / atNoblesville.com

This year marks the fourth year alleys have been included in the rehabilitation program, and as of this year, 6.12 of the 13.92 miles of city alleys will have been repaved. Residents have no doubt noticed more roundabouts throughout the city as well. Noblesville did not have any when Ditslear began his first term. Since then, 32 have been added. “We have taken intersections that have caused concerns with regard to either traffic volume or safety, and improved them,” Hellman says. “Federal studies show that roundabouts reduce injury crashes by 75 percent at intersections where stop signs or signals were previously used for traffic control. They also improve the flow of traffic and reduce emissions, which is better for the environment.” Ditslear says improved roads, alleys and

heavily-traveled corridors benefit not only Noblesville residents but those traveling to the city for business, recreation and special events.

Union Chapel Road: This is a new roadway running parallel to State Road 37, providing relief to the east side of the city. It essentially allows residents in The Meadows to travel from Promise Road south to 146th Street “I remember when Deer Creek guests would without stopping. wait hours to leave after concerts,” he says. “The improvements made to the roadways Pedestrian Bridges: The city constructed a surrounding the venue — Campus Parkway, pedestrian bridge on Carrigan Road. Morse Greenfield Avenue, Boden Road, 146th Reservoir has been a physical barrier to Street, Brooks School Road and Olio Road pedestrians, and this bridge allows residents — have greatly reduced that wait time. Now west of Morse to connect eastward. The project is scheduled for 2023 and will remove the physical barrier caused by the reservoir as Major infrastructure improvements well as extend a trail project, completed during Ditslear’s terms have included the by the city two years ago, further north on following: Little Chicago Road. 146th Street: The city built an east-west In 2007, Noblesville Utilities began work on corridor from State Road 37 to Interstate a five-phase Long Term Control Plan, which 69 that now features several northwill span a total of 15 years and includes south connections, and was the catalyst upgrades to the city’s wastewater treatment that attracted economic development opportunities such as SMC Corporation of plant and collection system. which causes additional workload to the plant,” says Noblesville Utilities Director Ray Thompson. “The project has improved drainage during flooding or heavy rainfall.” Phase V of the plan, expected to begin in 2020, will decrease stormwater to the treatment plant from the southern portion of Old Town. With the completion of three major corridors — 146th Street, Hazel Dell Road and Union Chapel Road — Ditslear says the city is now focused on State Road 37 and Pleasant Street projects. Work has begun on S.R. 37 in Fishers to extend the free flow of traffic past 146th Street in Noblesville. “In my opinion, Pleasant Street is just as important as improvements to State Road 37 and is one of our top priorities for improving traffic flow,” Ditslear says. “The Pleasant Street project is vital to creating a connector between the east and west sides of Noblesville while serving as a reliever for traffic from State Road 32 and through our historic downtown square.”

For a company that lists “personnel development” as one of its primary company values, efforts to continually train up employees permeates every aspect of Gaylor. “Employee development for us is about literally building a career and a career path for folks to have upward mobility in the company,” said Chuck Goodrich, Gaylor Electric President and CEO. Goodrich said that he wants Gaylor to be a place of lifelong learning for its employees. “What we're trying to do is make sure that whatever stage you're in when it comes to your career, we're trying to get folks from where they're at to where they want to be.” Gaylor Electric tackles workforce development from several angles. It offers training programs in order for its

employees to stay at the top of their fields. Ex-offenders find training and mentorships through Gaylor’s second chance program. Gaylor has a state-accredited school located inside its Noblesville campus. The Crossing School of Business and Entrepreneurship offers education to atrisk students. The students spend half the day in the classroom and the other half of the day receiving hands-on job training. Gaylor Electric’s state-of-the-art Mobile Innovation Center, a decked-out trailer that can travel directly to worksites or to 1 of Gaylor’s 11 offices across the country, enables training to literally meet its employees where they are. Over the next two and a half years, Gaylor looks to grow its nationwide employee workforce of 1,500 by 50 percent. As the company expands its campus in Noblesville, Chuck Goodrich believes 20 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2019 / atNoblesville.com

Noblesville is a great place to set up shop. “We've been there for 11 years now and I've been there since 1996 personally,” he offered. “I love to see Noblesville’s growth. It’s been a good corporate partner, and we want to return the favor. So we partner with all kinds of programs from second chance to high schools to try to make a positive impact in the community.” Goodrich, who also serves as a state representative for District 29 in Indiana’s House of Representatives, keeps his sights set high for the future of the company. He sums up his goals for Gaylor Electric as “being huge community supporters who are creating awesome jobs, interrupting the poverty model for folks, getting more high schoolers trained, developing our existing employees into what they want to be and what's great for Gaylor, and becoming the best place to work in the world.”

Noblesville High School Senior Ava Wettrick was only 16 years old when she had a flash of insight. She was traveling in the car with her father, Don, and they were listening to a bit of celebrity gossip coming over the airwaves from a popular radio station. Suddenly she had the realization that what she was hearing would not better her or anyone else her age but might even impede progress and development toward good. “I had an aha moment when I realized kids seem to be blindly entertained by the media,” Wettrick says. “They aren’t focused on any specific goals. It leads to selfisolation and depression. I wanted to give kids a chance to learn from people who are interested in making others the best they can be. So, I started a podcast.” Wettrick began broadcasting MentorZ, her successful podcast, in January 2018. Aimed at reaching Generation Z listeners, those born in the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, the podcast has touched thousands. It features guests who are well-known entrepreneurs and writers such as Corey Poirier, award-winning speaker, Tim Shurr, a behaviorist who shares his expertise in many books and over major network television appearances and Bruce Van 22 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2019 / atNoblesville.com

Horn, author of “Worry No More: Four Steps to Stop Worrying and Start Living.” The professionalism and high-quality content of MentorZ caught the attention of the Ariel Foundation International (AFI), an organization that supports youth by promoting entrepreneurship education. The AFI was instrumental in facilitating Wettrick’s trip to the United Nations in Switzerland. “It was through the support of AFI, that I received an invitation to speak at last year’s United Nations World Investment and Youth Forum in Geneva, Switzerland on youth and female entrepreneurship,” she says. “AFI paid for some of my expenses and it was an amazing experience. I spoke on developing a mindset in kids that engages them to solve problems, build solutions, give back to the community, have a healthy work ethic and joy for life.” In an effort to reach out to even more young people with her positive message, Wettrick

has two additional avenues. She is developing a course called ChangeZ and currently testing it through the Boys and Girls Club in Noblesville. Aimed at females, it is a seven-week program that seeks to teach the skill sets needed to develop an entrepreneur mindset. MentorZ Media is Wettrick’s small media company that teaches youth through storytelling, articles and videos. “My dad, Don Wettrick, is 100% my mentor,” she says. “He teaches the Innovations class at the high school, which

I have taken, and is the founder of Start Ed Up, a program that brings entrepreneur education to schools. “Young people don’t typically have a meaning or purpose set up for them in life, but deep down they want to be part of something greater than themselves,” Wettrick adds. “Entrepreneurship helps young people find a problem to solve and the courage and tools to solve it. It creates a more fulfilling life to help people or the world in some way.”

Author Paul Ulman

Writer / Trisha Turner

“Repeat any task over and over to improve upon it,” Paul Ulman says to his wife, Leann, after learning it through his Six Sigma training. “Well, if that’s the case, can you repeatedly work on shortening your time in the shower?” Leann says. That got Ulman thinking. Maybe people could infuse the principles of Six Sigma, traditionally used in the corporate world, to improve their personal lives. Six Sigma is a system for enhancing business processes, and Ulman completed the first level of training — earning a Yellow Belt in the program — when he was a Chrysler employee.

However, Ulman, who has lived in Noblesville nearly all his life, began to build on his belief that Six Sigma principles could have more personal uses. He developed a self-improvement system that draws on many of Six Sigma’s themes. About eight years ago, in a job supervising inmates at the Pendleton Correctional Industrial Facility, he began to fill inmate’s downtime by giving them tips from his new, Six Sigma-inspired program. He noticed that many of them began to see positive results. Now, after volunteering to mentor hundreds, if not thousands, of people using his Six Sigma-based approach to improving their lives, he’s written a book to share the concepts even more broadly. “Get Your Life on Target with 6 Sigma” is 24 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2019 / atNoblesville.com

a 127-page book meant to be a simple read and guide to carry for reference as needed in everyday life. “What I’m trying to get across in the book is that we need leaders in this world, but we need good, ethical leaders,” Ulman says. “And this is the kind of foundation upon which a leader is made.” Self-published and released in December, the book outlines three overarching themes that Ulman says define your wholeness as a person — character, tasks and relationships. Each of these three basic pillars includes 10 additional areas of focus. “The concepts should serve as guides in the process as people work to improve aspects of their lives,” says Ulman. “Do an assessment and find out where you are as a

person. Define what the issue is, then measure it, then analyze it, make that improvement, and then control it.” The approach can be useful in everything from weight loss to career advancement — or, as in Ulman’s case, in finally publishing that book everyone’s encouraged you to write. Prior to “Get Your Life on Target with 6 Sigma,” Ulman had written two children’s books, yet never published them. He then wrote about 50 pages of a novel that he, again, didn’t finish. This time, though, he applied the concepts of his own Six Sigma-inspired program to the yearlong process of finally completing and publishing a book.

I JUST THINK THE WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE IF PEOPLE THOUGHT ABOUT HOW THEIR ACTIONS IMPACTED THEIR FELLOW MAN - PA U L U L M A N -

Currently, he’s at work on another book, focused on finding your calling in life. As for Ulman, he believes his own calling is helping others. “What I kept hearing time and time again is, ‘You need to write a book,’” Ulman says. “I’m a Christian, and I’m a believer in when you keep hearing something over and over again from different sources, it’s really God talking to you and calling you into doing that.” Ulman is an Army veteran, married father of two, author, and production supervisor for Allison Transmission in Indianapolis — and he believes his willingness to help others has led to success his own life. He references physicist Isaac Newton’s Third Law to explain. “One of the things I talk about in the book is that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction,” Ulman says. “I believe when you do good and put it out into the world, that good is going to come back to you. “I just think the world would be a better place if people thought about how their actions impacted their fellow man.” This even applies to the smaller things of life. When Ulman’s wife asked him to use his Six Sigma to cut down his time in the shower, he was able to reduce his time to less than five minutes — down from 15. “Get Your Life on Target with 6 Sigma” is available from Amazon, in paperback and on Kindle. KEEP MOVING THIS SUMMER

Whether you are doing laps in the pool, mowing the lawn or going for a bike ride this summer, make sure you are making the most out of the season in the healthiest way. “It is important to stay active, and often easier to stay active during the summertime,” Dr. Kris Homb says, nonsurgical spine and sports specialist at IU Health North Hospital. “If you know you are prone to joint pain during or after exercise, avoid high-impact activities like jumping and running. Instead, try finding a low-impact alternative.” Dr. Homb suggests trying cycling, swimming, canoeing or kayaking. “Cycling can be a great source of exercise if you are experiencing knee pain,” Dr. Homb says. “Although it is a repetitive movement, cycling works the quadriceps and hamstrings without putting direct strain on the knee joints. Swimming is also an excellent activity for those who suffer from joint pain or arthritis. Not only does it work all of the body’s muscle groups, it also helps

keep your heart healthy. If you're not the best swimmer, you can get a good workout by walking across the pool forwards, backwards and sideways. Canoeing and kayaking can also be beneficial to someone that suffers from hip pain. This can take pressure off of your hips while still providing a workout for the upper body.” Yard work is an unavoidable task and can often be painful if done the wrong way. When tackling yard work, Dr. Homb suggests taking breaks frequently, staying well-hydrated and applying sunscreen.

Don’t let pain hold you back from doing your favorite summer activities. Next time you are heading out for time in the sun, remember to choose a low-impact activity if needed, use correct posture, take breaks, stay hydrated and apply plenty of sunscreen. Talk with your doctor if you have consistent joint pain or feel pain completing your normal activities or hobbies.

“Gardening, if done correctly and with the right tools, can be beneficial to your body and mind,” he says. “When doing yard work or gardening, don’t over-strain your joints. Limit movements like excessive reaching, bending and kneeling to reduce the strain on your body. When mowing the yard with a push mower, use good posture, keeping your back and wrists straight and pushing with your legs and arms. Mow the lawn at dusk or dawn to avoid the risk of overexposure to the heat.”

“IT IS IMPORTANT TO STAY ACTIVE, AND OFTEN EASIER TO STAY ACTIVE DURING THE SUMMERTIME.” - DR. KRIS HOMB -
