IN THE GREEN GREEN VISTA LANDSCAPING TURNS 40 Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Ron Wise

For 40 years, Green Vista Landscaping has provided Hamilton County and surrounding areas with landscaping, hardscaping, design and maintenance services. For the past 16 of those 40 years, the company has operated under the leadership of Jeff Eiler and T.J. Houghtalen, both of whom have decades of experience in the industry. “My father-in-law Kevin Stough - my husband Jeff’s stepdad - began the company,” says Sandy Eiler, office manager. “It started out small, and then he sold it to us in 2005. Kevin basically worked at building the company until he was ready to move to a warmer climate in March of 2005, and that’s when Jeff and T.J. purchased the company.” Jeff had worked at the company since 1987, beginning at age 17, and when the time came to buy out Stough and continue the company legacy of superior service, he and Houghtalen had both the knowledge and experience to do just that. “Jeff started out by mowing and doing different things at the nursery, and really got to know the ins and outs of the company,” Eiler says. “He really had an eye toward working at the company long-term, and in

early 2005 when my father-in-law came to the guys about taking over, it was a perfect transition. It was a busy time transitioning, and kind of a whirlwind winter with down payments and stuff, but it was great.” Green Vista offers hardscaping and landscaping design, installations, a six-step fertilization process, mowing, and snow removal, among other services. “We can do other unique things like pondless waterfalls,” Eiler adds. “We have stepped away from doing irrigation, however. We can maintain it or repair it, like if something broke during construction, since we have the education and can get the supplies, but we just don’t install.” Green Vista’s hardscaping services have been particularly popular according to Eiler. “It seems like people are keeping their homes longer now, especially with everything that’s going on these days, and they’re entertaining at home even more since it can be safer and maybe a little bit cheaper,” she says. “I think because of that, people are more willing than ever to spend the money on their homes.”

other areas. Potential customers can visit the official website and enter a description of the work desired, as well as contact information. A team member will then contact the individual to discuss a meeting time. After that, Green Vista will work up an estimate for the individual to review.

work has been challenging at times. “Last year when fall came and our college kids went off to school, we had five of them on the payroll so we lost five in one week,” she says. “Last year was the first year we had that many college-age workers, and they were hard workers. They didn’t have a lot of the knowledge coming in, but they were willing to work and learn, and show up every morning.” Business has picked up recently according to Eiler, partly due to the pandemic, which has led to many individuals and families spending increased time at home tackling various residential projects.

“Since a lot of people are working from home, a lot more people are liking to meet with Jeff and T.J.,” she says. “Normally people would be at work and so we would drive by and measure, and then send them an estimate.” Eiler says 2021 looks to be a record year for the company. “Compared to last year with what we sold, we are way up on our numbers,” Eiler says. “Jeff said at a recent company meeting that we’re on track to have our best year ever, which is exciting. As long as Mother Nature cooperates and things are OK with the virus, it will be a great year for us.” Eiler says Green Vista values the local

community and the customers they’ve served through the past several decades. “We love Hamilton County, and T.J. is on the Noblesville Tree Board,” she says. “For three or four years we did the planting of the Noblesville Street Department trees. Everyone here in Noblesville and in the county has been so awesome ever since T.J. and Jeff bought the company 16 years ago, as two young owners.” Green Vista Landscaping is located at 23090 State Road 37 North in Noblesville. Trula Womack, director of marketing and brand excellence for Best-One of Indy, says customers can look forward to continued excellence at the company’s Noblesville location. “Effective April 1, we acquired this location from R&T Tire and Auto,” Womack says. “They were a 56-year-old, family-owned business. This location continues to be led by Chuck Godby, and we specialize in passenger and light truck tires and auto service.” Best-One offers a range of services. “We also repair lawn mower tires,” Womack says. “There really isn’t a tire too big or too small, and from brakes to batteries,

alignments and oil changes, we do it all. We are a full-service, one-stop shop. We even offer financing for tires and auto service with our Best-One credit card.” Womack notes that all locations are independently owned. “At Best-One of Indy, we are locally owned and have a total of 13 locations now.” Womack says. Best-One was founded in 1948 when Paul Zurcher went into business in Monroe, Indiana, with a $300 loan funded through the GI Bill. “He had a dream of owning his own business servicing cars, and selling and repairing farm tires,” Womack says. “He took the loan and bought a single-bay service station. It’s not all retail and farm, and BestTownePost.com / JUNE 2021 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 9

Paul passed away in 2015, but his dream continues to live on in all Best-One team members. We are enthused and excited to make a difference in our customers’ lives, our communities and with our team members.” Visit Best-One of Indy’s Noblesville location at 17016 Clover Road. KINSEY’S FLOOR COVERING THRIVES FIVE YEARS INTO NEW OWNERSHIP toward retiring. As they considered possible buyers, Joe came to mind naturally as he had worked for them as a long-timer installer since he was 23. The sale was finalized one week before Joe married wife Jennifer in 2016, with Pam remaining to work the salesfloor, using her years of experience helping customers. “Joe worked for us for 27 years before he bought the store and Jennifer was a good friend of my daughter’s,” Pam Kinsey says. We’re definitely a family-oriented business.” Joe said Ron has always been a phone call away with support and Pam’s familiar face will soon be edging gracefully out the door for her retirement. Kinsey’s Floor Covering is celebrating its fifth anniversary under its second ownership by continuing to offer their quality flooring options and installation expertise. The business has been in Noblesville since 1988, the last five years of which have been under the leadership of second owner Joe Wariner. Kinsey’s was established by wife-and-husband team Pam Kinsey and Ron Kinsey, who operated the store until they began to look

“My poor wife was thrown to the wolves right away,” Joe Wariner says. Jennifer has been involved with the business since day one. “She’s been a big part of this,” Wariner says. “She’s always investigating new products and talking to our reps. It’s to the point where, in our showroom, we get the newest samples in there.” She was just as involved when the business re-opened a month after the state shutdown. “My wife deserves praise in that aspect,” Wariner says. “She made sure the store was ready for customers the sales staff cared for. She had sanitizing stations, signs for masks on the doors, and put all the procedures in place.” The Kinsey team includes five employees.

Materials range from carpet, laminate, luxury vinyl tile (LVT), hardwood, and stone, ceramic, and porcelain tile. After the brief downtime, homeowners have been eagerly placing orders to improve their now familiar living spaces. Pam Kinsey notes some trends in the market for hard surfaces have moved toward waterproof LVT and wood flooring that has been wire-brushed versus hand-scraped. Matte finishes have gained in popularity over shiny finishes. Kinsey’s also provides floor-care products and area rugs with solids and patterns that can be bound or unbound, with and without fringing. Financing is available and most jobs can be installed within several weeks. “(The Wariners) have that same philosophy (of ours) of wanting their customer to find a product they love, within their budget, and follow through with a great installation experience and stand behind the products they sell,” Kinsey says. “We also remain with non-commissioned salespeople, so customers won’t get a hard sell. We’re here to help them find what they are looking for.” Kinsey’s Floor Covering is located at 16222 Allisonville Road, Noblesville, Indiana. PATRICK MOORMANN

Moormann has enjoyed working with the residents during stressful times. He is encouraged by how resilient and courageous everyone has been. “I was happy to help where I could, and I would do it again,” Moormann says. “I would like to think that helping residents, especially during COVID-19, is the right thing to do.”

Patrick Moormann, a certified nursing assistant at Harbour Manor & The Lodge, is continually inspired by the residents and staff he works with. He is moved by how strong and resilient the residents and staff have been during hectic and stressful times. In the face of a pandemic, he says everyone has risen to the challenge, and couldn’t be more proud of the people around him.

“In the beginning of this past year, when we were dealing with COVID-19, there was panic and confusion,” Moormann says. “There were few of us that worked the COVID-19 unit. We were isolated from everyone else. The residents under our care only had us to talk to, and us to them. We just tried to keep their hopes up, and their minds on other things.”

Harbour Manor has high-quality, long-term care, which is especially important during a pandemic. The staff offers comprehensive skilled nursing and hospice care. Staff members such as Moormann go the extra mile to make sure residents are taken care of. It also helps that residents receive professional health care in a very comfortable and welcoming environment.

Moormann says he is touched by the residents’ courage and attitudes during a Harbour Manor & The Lodge offers services tough time. during all of this,” he says. Moormann adds that Harbour Manor residents have been understanding of safety measures and protocols. They understand how everyone needs to work together to make it through a challenging crisis. “Most have understood our precautions and limitations,” Moormann says. “It has been taxing for them not to be able to see their families.”

Moormann has also been moved and inspired by his fellow employees. He has witnessed them going the extra mile to ensure every patient is comfortable and receives outstanding health care. Staff members have put in extra hours and encouraged each other.

“Those I work with are phenomenal,” Moormann says. “They have put so many hours in during this past year. Some were isolated from their families for long periods of time and they kept coming to work.” For more info on Harbour Manor & The Lodge, call 317-770-3434.

NORTHSIDE INDY MOUNTAIN BIKE GROUP PEDALS ON Banks says the Indiana league operates within the National Interscholastic Cycling Association [NICA], and adds that he thoroughly enjoys his job as a Level 3 coach with the organization. “Coaching at NICA requires a certification,” Banks says. “This is in part to ensure each rider and coach receives proper training, and is properly educated on what to train and look for when riding mountain bikes. This ensures riders are all treated fairly, are safe, ride within their means, learn, and most importantly, have fun.” He says there are three levels of certifications. Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Tim Banks of the Indiana Interscholastic Cycling League is encouraging more Hoosiers to join his Indy mountain biking group for fun and exercise.

“Level 1 teaches you all the basics of mountain biking,” Banks says. “Level 2 and Level 3 add in first aid, advanced wilderness first aid, and some additional aspects of both coaching kids and hosting a team. program.” 2020 was his first official year. “It was during the pandemic, with a mountain bike league for high schoolers and middle school kids in the state of Indiana,” Banks says. “There were a lot of challenges. Safety was number one. Each event was held outdoors, and strict guidelines were given to remain socially distant and safe while wearing masks and participating in each event. Team tents were allowed, but each were separate so that people were kept socially distant.” Banks says with many schools shutdown, the NICA supported kids in grades 6 through 12, but it was hard to get the word out to kids about the league. “Most schools did not want to support a mountain biking team, so we started a composite team,” Banks says. “This allowed any kid that did not have a school-

sponsored program to participate. We were a club to anyone who was either homeschooled or just wanted to try. Kids wanted to try, but they either did not have bikes, did not have safe, working bikes, or did not know how to ride them safely on trails. We as a league and as coaches did our best to help with bikes, maintenance and skill development.”

each kid should have a bike and helmet in working order, and we will help with the skill assessment and development. We strive to have one to two coaches per six to eight riders.”

Banks says the Indiana Interscholastic Cycling League helps adults become coaches, and kids become better on trails.

“Our team is focused right here in Hamilton County,” Banks says. “We started last year with three kids and a dream. We finished with 19 kids and 11 of those kids raced, many for the first time ever. We had numerous podiums and wins, and state champions at the high school level. We have

one of the largest girls mountain teams in the state of Indiana, and the girls are quite amazing at riding mountain bikes.” Banks says the NICA leads the way in training for coaches, to ensure each kid has a proper education and support needed to grow their skills and be safe on the trails. “We stress safety and then development,” Banks says. “We ride, train and practice within the means of the rider. It’s very important that we have well-trained adults helping to ensure all of us keep these goals and objectives in mind.” For more information, visit indianamtb.org.

SHOWTIME BASKETBALL LOCAL BOYS AND GIRLS PROGRAM IS PICKING UP STEAM from first grade through high school. “Regardless of our size, we really want to make sure we’re still making a good product,” says Eric Schellhammer, Showtime’s director of basketball. “We can have 100 teams, but if it’s not a good product we have to reevaluate.” The program calls Finch Creek Fieldhouse in Noblesville its home. There was a local need for youth sports, and Schellhammer was approached by the facility’s owner and chief operating officer because of his background in basketball. He had played at a junior college in Michigan, then went on to become a graduate assistant at Western Kentucky University, an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee at Martin, and an assistant coach at IUPUI, all on the girls side. Writer / Jamie Hergott

Showtime Basketball in Noblesville is only about two years old, but its growth has been rapid and it shows no signs of stopping. Currently there are 51 boys and girls teams,

Schellhammer’s two daughters were always playing at Finch Creek Fieldhouse, and he was asked to put on a camp for first-grade through eighth-grade boys. This volunteer position turned into much more. As he began building the program, starting with about six boys teams in the spring and 22 / JUNE 2021

summer of 2019, it didn’t take long for him encourage the launch of girls teams. “Being a girl dad, that was really important to me,” Schellhammer says. “We launched the girls side along with the boys side right before COVID hit, and we were shut down. We went back to the drawing board, and we were back at it this past fall.” The program put protocols in place, followed CDC and Hamilton County guidelines, and had an explosive fall and winter season, growing from 32 teams to the current 51. They also started an AAU branch called Showtime Select, for eighthgrade and ninth-grade boys, before also starting Showtime Select for girls, for a total of 57 Select teams. “We grew by around 700% through COVID,” Schellhammer says. “That’s pretty substantial.” While there are many youth programs out there, Schellhammer points out what makes Showtime stand apart from others. “The two words I built this program on are

growth and development,” Schellhammer says. “We aren’t elite, we aren’t the highest level, and we’re not rec. We’re in the middle. I preach that this is a process.” He focuses less on wins and losses, and more on developing skills and working on growth over time. He adds that a benefit to being hosted by Finch Creek Fieldhouse is access to M14 and D1 training, both independent basketball training programs that offer dynamic skill, strength and competitive training, and also operate out of the facility. As part of Showtime, enrolled youth in the fall and winter get 10 training sessions with the M14 staff. Youth enrolled

in spring and summer get strength training for speed and agility with the D1 staff. “We’re just really lucky to have them right here in our backyard,” Schellhammer says. “We want to make sure we use those resources, and it has really helped our kids.” Retention for Showtime Basketball is high, and Schellhammer finds deep satisfaction in watching the kids come back year after year. Some have been coached by him since day one. He loves the business side of what he does, but he loves coaching the kids even more.

“I coach my tail off because at the end of the day, they’re still learning,” Schellhammer says. “I absolutely love what I do because I want kids to be successful, have a smile on their face and work hard. Nobody in Showtime is getting offered a Division I scholarship anytime soon. There will be a day for that. For now we are learning, growing, developing and having fun.” For more information, visit finchcreekfh. com/showtime-basketball-tryouts, or email Schellhammer at eschellhammer@ finchcreekfh.com.

In fact, Carmel, Fishers and Noblesville’s downtown areas have been named state-designated arts districts by the Indiana Arts Commission. Throughout our communities, you can find hand-painted murals on the sides of buildings; whimsical, life-like statues; towering sculptures and more. Artists range from high school students to professionals in their craft. You can even find artwork in the middle of countless roundabouts in the county, so visitors can find artwork

at every turn – literally. With the help of local city officials and artists, Hamilton County Tourism has compiled this information into a robust public art map, available to view on VisitHamiltonCounty.com. The maps are divided by community, so it’s easy to find your favorite piece of artwork and learn more about it. Challenge yourself to a scavenger hunt and see if you can locate all the murals and sculptures on the maps. Here are a few of note. Main Street in Carmel is also home to more than a dozen lifelike statues by J. Seward Johnson. Take a selfie with “Unconditional Surrender,” modeled after the famous “VJ Day Kiss” photo or “Sidewalk Concert,” featuring a street musician painted bronze.

The classic Carmel Arts & Design District Mural was designed and painted by art students from Carmel High School. It’s on the side of the Old Town Antique Mall on Main Street, across from The Pint Room.

Talented local artist Koda Witsken creates many of the murals you see in Hamilton County, including “Thanks for Being Weird With Me” at Fishers District.

You’ve probably seen the colorful floral sculpture at the corner of State Road 32 and Union Street in Westfield. It’s called “Westfield Blossoms” and it’s by Christopher Blice.

Next time you get a scoop of ice cream at Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt in Fishers, take a photo with the colorful Blue Rose Junction mural by artist Craig Martin.

Pedal along the Midland Trace Trail and you’ll discover “Embrace the Trace” by Kevin Huff at the Hazel Dell Road trailhead. Hungry? Head to the newly renovated Big Hoffa’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que and admire the enormous pirate-themed mural adorning the restaurant, painted by artist Jackie McCracken.

In downtown Sheridan, find the retro murals depicting Henry George cigars and D.F. Hutchens and Company.

Do you see something missing from the public art maps? Please contact Sarah Buckner at sbuckner@hamiltoncountytourism.com.

At Federal Hill Commons in Noblesville, engage with the Freenotes interactive instruments on the stage (when it’s empty, of course), as well as the teal Bicentennial Bison designed by Erin Goodman and Deanna Leonard of Caravan Classes.

If you embark on a public art adventure, be sure to post your photos on social media and tag @VisitHamiltonCo or use #VisitHC. As the art scene continues to grow, check back to see what else there is to discover!

GOOD THINGS COME IN THREES LOCAL TRIPLETS AMONG THE IU’S 2021 GRADUATING CLASS

Writer / Julie Yates Photography / Provided

On May 8, the 2021 Indiana University commencement bestowed 21,145 degrees upon graduating students. The group included 28 sets of twins, but only one set of triplets. 2017 Noblesville High School graduates Elisabeth (Ellie), Madeline (Maddie) and Veronica VanBuskirk are not only the individuals behind that statistic but are now also third-generation Indiana Hoosiers. “The girls didn’t specifically decide to all go to the same college as each other, but it worked out that way,” the triplets’ mother, Lori VanBuskirk, says. “They are all so different. I’m glad they went with their heart, chose the school that was right for them individually, but were also are confident to do their own things.” When it came time to pick a college, all three girls were initially headed in different directions. Although the family had strong ties to IU, Maddie was the only one who knew all along that she wanted to go there. Her two sisters were attracted to different schools they felt would be best for their courses of study. “My husband Brian and I met at IU and his father went there as well. The triplets were born in Bloomington and we moved to Noblesville when they were one. At first, Ronnie wanted to go out of state and was

accepted at Clemson University, but she knew she would also need grad school for a physical therapy degree,” VanBuskirk says. “Ellie was planning on attending Ball State but after Ronnie decided on IU, she told me, ‘The first time I see a photo and know they are having fun, it will break my heart that I’m not with them.’ So, she visited the media school, and it was a good fit for her. At the last minute, they all decided to go to IU,” VanBuskirk says. Having all three girls attending one school was much easier on the VanBuskirks. Each triplet pledged a different sorority and developed friends which became their sisters’ friends as well. The family enjoyed tailgating during the football season and the triplets were close enough to take part in family celebrations. The COVID-19 pandemic put a crimp in their college experience, as the girls had to return home when IU shut down in March of 2020. Ronnie was disappointed to cut her study abroad in Australia short and try to complete her courses online in a different time zone. Having all the girls under one roof was challenging since everyone needed to use the Wi-Fi. However, lots of games were played, and everyone enjoyed each other’s company. While the family is back together for a short time now, this fall will see the girls going TownePost.com / JUNE 2021 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 29

in different directions. Ellie’s degree is in media film production. She is currently in the process of applying for a program with the Directors Guild of America. Mattie graduated with an elementary education degree and is seeking a teaching position. Ronnie earned a degree in kinesiology, the study of movement in the human body. She is taking a year to work at Ascension Saint Vincent before attending graduate school. “When we first found out we were having triplets we were concerned, but it’s been fabulous,” VanBuskirk says. “I couldn’t be prouder of all of them.”

TIPS TO BEAT THE SUMMER HEAT AND STAY ACTIVE a helmet and Tai Chi are great ways to add movement to your summer days. These activities are easy on your body and are great social activities to participate in with family and friends. Remember to take breaks to cool off when exercising for a long time.

EXERCISE IN THE SHADE OR INDOORS. When the outdoor temperature is above 80°F and humidity is greater than 75%, the risk of heat illness is high. It may be better to exercise indoors. If you’re going to exercise outside, try and find a shady cool spot and exercise during the early morning or late evening when it might be cooler.

CHOOSE YOUR CLOTHES CAREFULLY. Writer / Dr. Ann Hulme, Sports Medicine Physiatrist at IU Health North Hospital

Exercising is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. As temperatures increase, it’s important to take proper safety precautions when exercising outside in the summer heat and humidity.

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. Between the summer heat and exercising, your body loses a lot of its water through sweat and breathing. Ensure you drink enough water every day, by always having a water bottle with you or setting alarms to remind yourself to drink a glass of water. It’s also important to drink water before, during and after exercise. Try limiting your alcohol and caffeine consumption, as these can increase your risk of dehydration.

START WITH LOWER INTENSITY WORKOUTS. Lower intensity workouts such as walking, riding a bike wearing

When exercising during the summer, you can reduce your risk of overheating by wearing moisture wicking, loose fitting, light weight clothing. Try to wear light colored clothes as these absorb less heat than dark colored clothes do.

KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS. Heat related illness can range in severity from heat cramps to heat strokes. Warning signs include higher than normal heart rate, cramps, dizziness, and nausea. If you experience any of these signs, quickly move yourself to a shaded or air-conditioned area, sit down, elevate your legs and drink cold water. If you or someone with you develops signs of heat stroke, such as confusion, lack of sweating, persistent vomiting or loss of consciousness, start cooling them off and call 911 immediately. If you do injure yourself while exercising, especially if you notice the pain has not gone away and is impacting your everyday activities, contact your doctor. Dr. Hulme is currently accepting new patients. To learn more or schedule an appointment, call 317.948.0200.

HARBOUR MANOR GIVES BACK With summer just around the corner and the clouds of COVID lifting, Harbour Manor & The Lodge has lots in store for the Noblesville community.

greater Noblesville area through its partnership with Meals on Wheels. This year, it’s not only feeding people but providing comfort and connection as well.

This CarDon & Associates senior living community is partnering with the Noblesville Parks and Recreation department to make sure its residents and the surrounding community enjoy plenty of fun in the sun. Harbour Manor & The Lodge just recently finalized a sponsorship for one of the department’s Concerts at the Commons — a bi-monthly music series at Federal Hill Commons on Saturday nights from June through September. The concert series kicks off on June 12 with The Wildflowers, a Tom Petty tribute band.

“We’ve been volunteering with meal delivery for a while, but most recently we recognized the need for our residents at The Lodge to feel a connection to the community even through the challenges of COVID,” Shipman said. “Beth Gehlhausen, the executive director of Meals on Wheels Hamilton County, expressed concern for many of their meal recipients, who were also feeling the effects of isolation and losing their sense of community. From there, the idea of connecting our residents with their meal recipients seemed only natural. In April, our residents at The Lodge started handwriting notes of encouragement, paired with a single carnation, to be delivered monthly to meal recipients in need of connection. As the challenges of the pandemic change, we anticipate the delivered item to change, but we plan to

“We’re looking forward to a great summer of beautiful music,” said Kara Shipman, CarDon’s director of community engagement. The community also gives back to the

continue this as a monthly partnership.” Among the community’s many other partners is SERVE Noblesville, whose mission is to “Connect Compassionate Neighbors.” It does this through home repairs, neighborhood cleanups and community gatherings like this summer’s third annual F.U.N. — Food, Unity, Neighbors — Fest, which celebrates the diversity of Noblesville and showcases 18 booths with food, music and other creations from all over the world. “We were very fortunate to be connected with Patrick Propst, the director of SERVE Noblesville, in 2020,” Shipman said. “We are hoping this year will be the start of a longlasting relationship.” Through these efforts that bring people of all ages together, Harbour Manor & The Lodge stands tall as a testament to the power of community outreach.

JACK BEAHRS

LOCAL STUDENT RAISES NEARLY $90,000 FOR THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY

Writer / Stephanie Dolan Photography Provided

According to lls.org, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the champion of the fight to cure blood cancers. The organization is the largest nonprofit dedicated to this research and since 1949 they have invested nearly $1.3 billion in cutting-edge research. Each year, the organization spearheads the Student of the Year event. This is a philanthropic competition in which participants are encouraged to foster professional skills such as entrepreneurship, marketing and project management in the name of raising funds for the society research and donation endeavors. Joey Beahrs is a sixth-grader at Noblesville West Middle School. He is 12 years old. Jack, 16, is his older brother. He is a sophomore at Noblesville High School. The brothers were born and raised in Noblesville. Jennifer is their mother.

Joey was diagnosed with Leukemia in the spring of 2019. He is now in remission and 100% cancer-free. “We were contacted by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for Joey to be one of their Honor Heroes,” Jennifer says. “Throughout talking to us, they found out that we had an older son. They asked if Jack would be interested in participating in the Student of the Year competition. It just progressed from there.” Jack signed on eagerly and dove into the seven-week program wholeheartedly.

32 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2021 / TownePost.com

“It started in January and ended midMarch,” Jennifer says. “They have a pretty good structured program that they guide you through. It’s a lot of calling on businesses and sponsorships and things like that to raise money. It’s a lot of cold calling. He had a team of 10 supporting him. He probably had about eight to 10 businesses and a lot of individual donations he received.” Ultimately, Jack’s team raised almost $90,000. He came in third in the competition. The winner ended up bringing in more than $120,000. But, Jack didn’t come away empty-handed.

“There was a mission award based on community involvement,” Jennifer says. “In our opinion, he won the most important part because it’s based on work ethic. It’s more than just asking for money and knowing the right people.” Jennifer also said that the whole process was rather arduous. “There were times when I didn’t really feel like doing anything,” Jack says. “I had to do this on top of school and all sorts of extracurriculars and stuff like that. It had its highs and lows. At the end, though, it was really humbling to look at how many people wanted to help out and how much I was able to help as well.” Jennifer describes her son as very wellrounded in both academics as well as activities.

“History is my favorite subject,” Jack says. “I also play tennis with the school. Right now, I’m doing a bit of rec soccer, and I do a bit of basketball just for fun. But I study a lot for school.” Now, the hardest thing the Beahrs family is enduring is the occasional worry about a relapse for Joey. “It’s very rare that what he has relapses, but there’s always a percentage,” Jennifer says. For the most part, though, the whole family is just thankful that Joey is now out of the woods and fully recovered. He’s healthy. “I was very relieved,” Jack says. “It was like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. Words almost can’t describe it.”

A DREAM COME TRU TRÜ SALON SUITES OFFERS A UNIQUE BUSINESS MODEL

Owner Mike Kluth TownePost.com / JUNE 2021 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 35

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Amy Payne

M

ike Kluth is a successful local businessman who has been a fixture in the Noblesville community for more than three decades. Having built one of the leading cosmetic dental practices in the state of Indiana, he was born with an entrepreneurial spirit and has a talent for building businesses from the ground up. Several years ago, he saw a need within the beauty industry and decided to act on it. In November 2018, Kluth opened Trü Salon Suites, which caters to the modern needs of stylists, aestheticians, nail techs, and massage therapists who seek to run their own business but prefer not to deal with the hassle of taking care of the building and equipment elements of running a business. Though stylists have ownership of their space, Kluth supplies them with all the amenities they need to be successful. Rooms are fully stocked with the best styling equipment and cabinetry as well as a top-notch sound and screen systems. “This is the ideal place to rent if you’re looking to be your own boss,” Kluth says. “Each stylist can make their suite their own.” Allie Clark and her colleague Cara have been suite owners for a little over a year. She calls the experience a dream come true. “It’s great to have our own space and independence,” Clark says. “We’ve had so much fun turning our suite into our own. Our clients love it, too! We appreciate all the benefits of working here, including clean, updated facilities and amazing coworkers and building owners.” Though renters work under the umbrella of Trü Salon Suites, they are their own entity, working for themselves and having their own licenses. They have access to the salon 24/7, which means they can set their own hours and prices and come and go as they please.

“Stylists have a sense of ownership to where they are building their own business and creating their own worth,” says Kluth, noting that renters are typically those who already have an established career but are tired of working for someone else on a commission basis or being in a salon whose owners dictate what they can and can’t do. Stylists get the use of the washer and dryer for free rather than having to pay a couple dollars per load like many salons charge. “We don’t nickel and dime you,” Kluth says. “You just pay salon rent and the rest is 100% taken care of.” Stylists use an app where they can do all of their business scheduling, accounting and marketing. Within the app, business owners can coordinate their services and offer packages and discounts to promote one another within the salon. Branded as one of the best salons in the area, Trü Salon Suites offers chic décor with elegant high-end, barndoor finishes. “That feeling of elegance is transferred to the service each guest receives,” Kluth adds. Trü Salon Suites is the only salon in Noblesville that employs this business model though Kluth plans to expand to other parts of Indianapolis in the future, including Carmel, Westfield, Zionsville and Fishers. “There are other salons out there in other states with ideas that I liked, and we married those ideas to create this concept — one with more amenities and a personal touch,” Kluth says. Guests appreciate the privacy of the suites, especially in light of COVID-19 as guests prefer being in their own space rather than in TownePost.com / JUNE 2021 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 37

Because Kluth has years of business experience under his belt, those who rent from him know they have the backing of someone with the capital that assures them that the salon isn’t going to go anywhere — not even during an economic downturn like the one experienced this past year. Salons come and go depending on if someone is undercapitalized and doesn’t have the ability to withstand storms. Well, COVID-19 was the perfect storm and while stylists had to shut down for eight weeks, Kluth didn’t charge them rent for that whole period of time.

“Everyone is so friendly, and my clients love coming in to visit,” she says. “I love being able to work whenever I want and to schedule my own clients. This has been a great place for me to grow, and I love seeing the other stylists thrive when they make the jump to owning their own salon suite.”

“We had their backs. They didn’t have to worry about anything,” Kluth says. “I told them that when they were back to working and being profitable, then we’d start rent again. We were one of the only salons that did that.” Morgan Hobbs loves the unique
