Anastasija Sennikova and Isaiah Haymaker

Isaiah and Ana, both 23, enlisted Shelley Haymaker, Isaiah’s Mom, to assist in raising the capital necessary to make the purchase. Shelley, owner and member of Bica Café, says at the close of the business day on February 12, 2022, the restaurant ownership changed hands. “On Sunday, February 13, 2022, business opened up as usual, and the transition began with little to no interruption,” Shelley says. The hours of operation have changed slightly in order to be more consistent, according to Shelley.

Isaiah Haymaker, general manager of Bica Café, says customers won’t go away hungry, and it’s been that way since the restaurant opened. “Bica Café opened its doors October 2, 2020, and I began working as a chef at Bica beginning on December 2, 2020 - in essence, since almost the beginning,” Isaiah says. “Ana Platonova, my significant other and better half, followed shortly after, beginning to work as a barista on December 28, 2020.” The goal of the Bica Café team was to offer a cafe inspired by Portuguese and Italian fare.

“The mantra, ‘Beba isto com açúcar’ [‘Drink this with sugar’], was the driving force behind the cafe’s name, and variety of coffee and tea drinks, small plates, and desserts that we’re known for,” Isaiah says. Isaiah notes that the previous owners did not live in Hamilton County, and both had full-time jobs outside the restaurant. “One of them had a different job opportunity which would take them away from the restaurant even more,” Isaiah says. “They approached me in December of 2021 about purchasing the restaurant since Ana and I had basically been running the restaurant through the week on our own.”

6 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com

“Eventually we would like to offer dinner service on Friday and Saturday nights,” Shelley says. “We have had to reapply for a liquor license because the Riverfront licenses cannot be transferred. We are participating more in the Noblesville Main Street and downtown Noblesville activities. We are offering different specialty bakery and dessert items, along with different lunch specials. Isaiah became the new general manager, in addition to head chef and baker, while Ana became official manager of the front of the house.” Shelley says the atmosphere and layout of the restaurant will stay the same. “The scrumptious food and majority of the menu, with some revisions, will also stay the same,” Shelley says. “Our kitchen and other staff mostly all stayed through the transition, and we’re very lucky to have great, loyal coworkers. Isaiah remained as head chef and baker, while Ana remained as the lovely face and heart of the front of the house.” Some of the customer favorites that will remain the same include the Breakfast Fries,

Shrimp Alhinho and Danishes, as well as the coffees and specialty drinks. Ana has her own personal favorite. “I love the Shrimp Alhinho and Avocado Toast,” Ana says. Shelley says she loves the Chocolate Chip Cookies, Breakfast Fries and Liege Waffles, while Isaiah loves the muscles and charcuterie boards. Shelley has high hopes for the future. “Hopefully our liquor license will be approved soon and we’ll be bringing a variety of cocktails,” she says. “We will also have an assortment of lunch specials. We will also have new coffee and tea concoctions, various European pastries and desserts, and charcuterie and cheese boards.” Isaiah notes that the Noblesville community has been outstanding, “We cannot thank our community enough for the support,” he says. “Everyone we talk to about being new owners of the cafe has been so kind, loving and supportive. Mom has worked in this community for years - she’s a local attorney - and seeing the friends and family who have come in to support Ana and I has been wonderful.”

Floor Coverings and Expert Installations

Many of the customers at Bica Café return often. “We love our regulars that are so loyal week after week,” Isaiah says. “We even had someone drive up from the Kentucky border just to order a large takeout order, because she can’t get this type of food anywhere else near her. We are excited to bring great, quality food and friendly, loving service to each person who walks through our doors.”

BLATCHLEY NATURE STUDY CLUB TURNS 100 Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

For the past 100 years, the Blatchley Nature Study Club has been dedicated to promoting appreciation, preservation and respect for the environment through education and fellowship. According to President Rick Towle, this really just means the members love nature. On April 8, 1922, the club was founded by Noblesville resident Dr. Earl Brooks, and was initially known as Hamilton County Nature Club. The name changed in 1941 to the Blatchley Nature Study Club. In the years since, the club has grown to more than 100 members. The group meets at a clubhouse built in 1965, hidden in northern Noblesville on a 15-acre nature preserve that Towle calls an island refuge in the midst of the development of housing and businesses surrounding it. “When I joined the club about 17 years ago, the area was very rough,” Towle says. “The

trails were simply dirt. Over the years we’ve worked to make it more accessible while also keeping it as natural as possible.” Members meet once per month, and include an educational component with the social element. The club brings in speakers each month to educate members on nature-related topics. Past presentations include a history of the club’s namesake, Willis Blatchley, who was an entomologist, malacologist, geologist and author. Giving back to the local community is a high priority for group members. They participated in the White River Cleanup in September. The club also offers outdoor events for members. One of the more memorable events for Towle was creating art with worms. Members took worms, placed them in paint, and allowed them to wriggle around on a canvas. “We have a creek that runs through the property, so in the past we’ve done creek studies, hiking and wildflower walks,” Towle 8 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com

says. “We plant trees occasionally, if necessary.” The wildflower walks showcase more than 40 species of wildflowers and more than 25 species of trees on the property. The walks also serve as a membership drive for the relatively unknown club. “Potential members can join us at a meeting or an event to learn more about membership,” Towle says. “A long time ago, new members were pretty heavily vetted and voted on, with some people not getting in. Now, it’s a pretty simple membership process, and no secret handshakes are involved.” For the club’s centennial celebration, Towle wants to spread the word about the club to local residents to encourage more involvement. Their most recent nature walk showcased a barred owl, several local birds, foxes and, of course, wildflowers. The club is located at 125 Boulder Drive in Noblesville. Membership fees vary. For more information, visit Blatchley Nature Study Club on Facebook.

IDEAS TO MAKE

Father’s Day SPECIAL THIS YEAR Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided

It’s time to start thinking about all those wonderful fathers, grandpas and other father figures in your life. You know, the guys who make you laugh at their dad jokes, keep you going when times get tough, and love you as you are. Father’s Day is the perfect time to celebrate dads, and because they are so special and do so much for us day in and day out, here are some fun ideas to treat that fatherly figure in your life this year.

10 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com

1

CREATE NEW MEMORIES

Pile the family into the car and head out to somewhere you know your dad loves. Does your dad love being outdoors? Maybe take him to a state park and explore a new hiking trail. Does he love the beach? Maybe head to the closest beach or water park. Does he love movies? Pack up the car with snacks, food and fun, and head to the best drive-in you know. Spending quality time with your dad will make for some awesome new memories. Oh, and try to leave the electronics at home!

GET OUTTA HERE

Let dad have a minute and stay out of his way for a bit. We all know moms enjoy quiet time on Mother’s Day, so why not change the tune and let dads have some time to themselves too? You can send him away with a gift card to the hardware store or maybe to the movies if he doesn’t feel weird going by himself. Maybe even a voucher for a casino - many guys would enjoy that. Whatever you decide, just make sure to give him enough time to feel refreshed.

3

GRILL HIM

2

Grilling with a cold beer in hand has been a long-preferred pastime for many men (dads especially), for many, many years. There’s something about being able to say “Look at that steak” that gets them going. So why not “grill him” to find out if he needs a new grill or new grill tools? Grill him and find out what he needs or wants for his outdoor kitchen space. While you are at it, ask him about his favorite food to grill. Surprise him with his favorite steaks, sides and some new tools - and if you feel good about grilling, surprise him with a fully grilled meal in his honor.

HAVE A BALL

What dad isn’t a sports fan? Do a quick search for ball games happening near you. Even dads who prefer certain sports over others won’t turn down an opportunity to go to a sporting event. Baseball is an obvious favorite for this time of year, but you might even treat him to tickets to a game featuring his favorite sports team, even if it’s not happening on this Father’s Day.

5

BREAKFAST IN BED

Is this a thing for dads? If it isn’t, it should be. I mean, why not? Many dads enjoy sleeping in for sure, so get up early, let him sleep a little late, and then treat him with “I Heart Dad” pancakes, hearty bacon or sausage, a little bit of his favorite fruit, and maybe a Bloody Mary if tomato juice is his thing. He’ll love it and he definitely won’t be expecting it.

WRITE HIM A LETTER

6

Write something that tells this special man in your life how you feel about him. Tell him about all the things he’s done for you, how he’s made you into a better human, or even just how funny he is with his lame dad jokes. You could even try to write some new dad jokes for him, or better yet, about him! Whatever you tell him you love about him, he will love and cherish in return. Even better, frame it - with people going back to the office, this would be a great new addition for him to hang up on the wall.

Happy Father’s Day!

Of all the great things you can do to celebrate your special man this Father’s Day, make sure it’s something he loves. If he loves hanging with you and the family, great. If he loves spending time alone, great. If he loves visiting his dad, great. Whatever route you take this year, make sure it’s all about him. He’s going to love making memories with you, hearing from you, and/or bonding with you, no matter what you end up doing.

HELPING HAND

HAMILTON COUNTY AREA NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT IS TACKLING LOCAL HOUSING NEEDS Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided

Hamilton County Area Neighborhood Development (HAND), Inc., a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to addressing the housing needs of low- and moderateincome individuals, families and senior citizens in the community. On May 4, the results of a Hamilton County housing study commissioned by the Hamilton County Housing Collaborative were presented to the public during HAND’s 2022 Suburban Housing Conference. The study is important not only because of the statistics it reports, but also because it includes recommendations that involve immediate and long-range action at a time when

funding is currently available. “The study revealed that more housing of all kinds is needed from high to low end,” says Andrea Davis, executive director of HAND. “However, housing in Hamilton County is becoming less affordable to more people. The fastest-growing industries are the lowest paying. In 2019 the top five jobs that employed the most people in the county were fast food/counter workers, retail sales, customer service representatives, office clerks, and laborers/stocking/freight. None of these pay well. $16.60 an hour is the average. These incomes aren’t keeping pace with the increasing price in housing, which rose 63% from 2010 to 2019.” 18 / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com

“There is a stigma attached to affordable housing, such as people don’t want to work or they are trying to get money from the government,” Davis continues. “In reality it’s different. People who need housing aren’t coming from outside the county. They already live here and they are working more than one job.” The study, which began in 2021 and was completed in January of 2022 by Greenstreet Ltd., indicated that a lack of appropriate housing for the entire workforce could jeopardize Hamilton County’s quality of life and economic health. If a section of the labor force is unable to afford living in the community, certain jobs could be

unfilled, tax revenue could decrease and economic growth could be slowed. It could be harder to attract companies willing to invest in the community, in addition to people and jobs. “The county government has allocated $5 million towards helping to fund affordable housing,” Davis says. “It’s time to make some long-term investing in developing some plans. We asked that the consultants take a look at other communities and see what they do, so the next time a study is done, we can see some improvement.” HAND already has a track record of developing affordable housing on a small scale. Stakeholders from multiple local organizations and nonprofits were in attendance at the packed May 4 conference. The study recommended that these groups, the public sector, development and builder communities, as well as realty companies, partner together. It recommended that the partnerships focus on four areas - reducing the cost of development, removing the cultural stigma attached to income-based housing, stabilizing and supporting individuals and families most at risk, and increasing funding for attainable housing. “We hope to see some improvement in the next 12 to 18 months,” Davis says. “It’s a group effort. HAND can’t fix these problems all by itself.”

with the Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Department to expand the park over a period of several years.

In the early days of the pandemic, Chris Beaver used to drive by Potter’s Bridge Park and notice how many people gravitated towards nature during such a stressful time.

“It really tugged on my heart that this was the thing to do because it would be something that generations of Hamilton County residents could enjoy,” Chris says.

“Everyone was wanting to get out of their house and find some peace and quiet,” says Beaver, Noblesville resident and president of Beaver Gravel. “Potter’s Bridge Park was a popular destination to find such things.”

The first phase of the project is the park expansion, which the Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Department is overseeing. Attached to the White River Greenway Trail corridor, the Beavers will give the initial 10-acre donation to the parks so they can start expanding the nature trails for walking, biking and hiking. They’ll also build three shelter houses and a new wildlife habitat. Phase two involves creating a 10 to 12-acre lake for recreational kayaking, boating, fishing and canoeing. A pier will also be included. The third phase is residential development.

The problem was that the original design of the park was not built to hold the number of people who are using it today. Chris thought how great it would be to add a lake, wetlands, and more trails that people could enjoy on bike or by foot. Therefore, he bought 50 acres of land and undertook collaborating on a three-part project

neighborhoods, and other Hamilton County cities and towns. Currently, the Beavers and Hamilton County Parks are in the process of asking for a government use overlay. That way, the parks department can have it when they are done digging the land. A presentation to the Noblesville Planning Commission happened in May, and there will be a City Council vote on the project in late June.

“We saw a need for housing in Hamilton County and thought we could provide a unique opportunity here by building 27 upscale, rooftop-style townhomes,” Chris says. The development will offer clean lines and a high-end feel, making these properties desirable to both young professionals and those entering retirement. “They’ll have a beautiful park in their backyard to walk their dog or play with their grandkids,” Chris says. “It’ll be a unique situation to be able to live right next to a bustling park.” With the park’s expansion, the eight miles of trails will allow increased connectivity to downtown Noblesville, surrounding

Following the zoning process, they’ll remove the sand and gravel out. As soon as the gravel pit is done, the developer can start on the townhomes. The park would be built simultaneously. By giving the Hamilton County Parks the acres of wooded area, the 30-acre expansion can start immediately. After five years, the Beavers will donate the remainder of the land to Hamilton County Parks. At that point the lake will be done, the dirt work will be done, the grasses will be growing in, and the initial trails and water features will be complete. The parks department itself would own it and have total control of what happens going forward. According to Chris, the Hamilton County Parks commissioners and councilmen are excited about this expansion project. “They know in their heart that this is going to be a staple for future generations,” he says. Even so, Chris, his daughter Ali and the Beaver Gravel team, have done their due diligence to put anyone’s mind at ease who may have concerns about the project. Residents’ primary concerns revolve around water. Therefore,

Beaver Gravel hired Interra to conduct an in-depth analysis of water quality and quantity. Their report showed that there would be minimal risk of the operations affecting water quality or quantity, with proper monitoring. For added context, water wells were installed along the River Road area by Westfield in 1986. Westfield’s water demand grew, so more wells were added in 1992. In 2007 they purchased land from the Beaver family to add a major well field on the levee between the Beavers’ operations on the White River to help with rapid recharging of the aquifer. Currently there are 17 major water wells along River Road, many adjacent to existing gravel operations. All of these wells were implemented decades after the Beavers’ operations began in 1949. “That should suggest that there’s no concern of quality or quantity because the water is safe today,” Ali says. “We’ve done water studies, ecological studies, wildlife studies and impact studies that address property values long term. We provided facts to the public regarding any concern they might have.” “I think people forget that we’re citizens of Hamilton County,” Chris adds. “It’s not in our business plan to jeopardize the community that we are a part of. It’s a beautiful park now. We’re just going to make it 10 times better.” Potter’s Bridge Park is located at 19401 North Allisonville Road in Noblesville. Nathan Cook, a senior at Noblesville High School (NHS), enjoys getting other students inspired at school. He says it’s a positive way to get other people involved in all of the great things going on at NHS and in the Noblesville community. “I’m the student body president, so I lead the NHS student government,” Cook says. “I also serve on the principal’s advisory council, and I’m a member of the National Honor Society.” Cook takes his responsibilities seriously, but also has a lot of fun working with other students and the NHS staff. He enjoys working on many of the school events.

“My favorite thing about student government would definitely be our ability to get the school excited about different events we plan, such as homecoming and the prom,” Cook says. “Traditions like homecoming provide a unique opportunity to make school fun, and to also raise school spirit.”

“I also serve as a student member of the Noblesville Schools Education Foundation board, and I’m a Boy Scout,” he says. Cook is also a manager of the girls basketball team. “It’s a very cool way to be involved in sports in high school,” Cook says. “Go Millers!”

Cook also serves on the Noblesville Mayor’s Youth Council. He believes it’s a very Cook is also part of the NHS band and positive way to improve Noblesville. other school activities. “I like being a part of a group of other motivated students that care about the community and want to make it better,” Cook says. Cook is a member of additional organizations that mean a lot to him. He looks forward to their meetings and events. 30 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com

“I’m in jazz 1, the wind ensemble and the show choir band at NHS, and I play alto saxophone and clarinet,” Cook says. “The performing arts are really special at Noblesville, and I love to create music with extremely talented and committed musicians.”

Cook has thoroughly enjoyed the friendships he has made at NHS. “I’m especially proud of the jazz band’s accomplishments while I’ve been in the band, including making the national Essentially Ellington festival two years in a row,” Cook says. “I would love to be in a band for fun next year in college, but I’m not planning on studying music.” Cook says he is looking forward to college. “I’m going to IU Bloomington next fall to study law and public policy,” Cook says. “I’m the youngest of a family of IU alums, so I’m very excited to be down there.” Cook can’t say enough positive things about living in Noblesville. “I’ve lived in Noblesville all my life, and I love the sense of community and tradition that we have here,” Cook says.

GORMAN & BUNCH ORTHODONTICS OPENS NOBLESVILLE OFFICE 32 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Travis Hinkle

Ever since he was young Jason Bunch was fascinated by the ability to change someone’s smile. So it came as no surprise when he grew up and studied dentistry and orthodontics. During his residency, he met Dr. J. Courtney Gorman, and the two became fast friends. When Bunch mentioned opening an orthodontic practice in 2006, Gorman suggested they join forces. “It was great because Dr. Gorman had a long family history in orthodontics,” Bunch says. “Plus, he was ahead of the curve offering Invisalign, as it hadn’t been around that long back then.” Invisalign treatment, which includes a series of clear, removable, custom-made appliances that straighten teeth, remains one of the prime services provided at Gorman & Bunch Orthodontics, accounting for 50% of their patients. In fact, they are the numberone provider of Invisalign and Invisalign Teen in the state of Indiana. They are also one of the top 15 groups in the U.S. who do the most Invisalign work. Patients love it, not only due to the aesthetics, but also because of hygiene, since they can take trays out to brush and floss. This approach also involves fewer food restrictions than conventional orthodontics. Users can even eat healthy foods like raw vegetables and nuts. Invisalign is also user-friendly for athletes. These days, nearly all patients are eligible for Invisalign if they want it. “Ten years ago I would have said Invisalign is not always an option, but now 98% of the time it is,” Bunch says. The other great factor is that the price and treatment time for braces and Invisalign are the same. There used to be an upcharge for Invisalign, but no more. Dr. J. Courtney Gorman and Dr. Jason Bunch have been an orthodontic team since 2006.

“I didn’t want to build a barrier there,” Bunch says. “I wanted patients to know what our goal was, tell them the pros of each tool,

and let them make a decision based solely on what fit them and their family the best, not based on the investment of treatment.” Although orthodontics is rapidly changing, Gorman and Bunch’s practice has been offering digital imaging technology for years. This means they do 3D teeth scanning as well as 3D printing, with a lab on-site so that they can custom-make everything their patients need, including retainers.

treated as teens but didn’t wear their retainers, so these patients are considered a “re-treat.” Other times parents come in with their kids who are patients and see the change in technology, which prompts them to seek treatment themselves. Still others have always wanted treatment but their families were unable to afford it. Now, as adults,

“We don’t do any impressions in the office and haven’t for years,” Bunch says. “The 3D scans and 3D printers make orthodontics so much more accurate and less gooey. It’s been a game changer.” Though the pair owns multiple orthodontic locations throughout Hamilton County and central Indiana, the Noblesville office, which is Bunch’s home base, just recently moved from across the street into their new facility in Noblesville and have been serving the area for 16 years. “We are all about the patient experience and part of that is having the doctor there that they’re used to seeing,” says Bunch, a Noblesville resident. “We were eager to open a practice here because 146th Street is such a thoroughfare. We wanted to be centrally located and still have easy access.” The architectural firm Progress Studio along with the interior design group at McGee Designhouse have done a lovely job of creating an inviting atmosphere for Gorman and Bunch’s patients. Those patients range in age from children to adults. They start seeing children by around age 7 in order to monitor growth and development, and see if there is any early interceptive treatment needed. “We call it Phase One treatment where we do the orthopedic orthodontics, which is expansion, guided jaw growth and things like that,” Bunch says. “Then we watch them.” They do more comprehensive orthodontics in pre-teens and teens, focusing on either braces or Invisalign. Adult patients may require Invisalign or braces, but they also sometimes take on multidisciplinary cases when patients may need implants or restorative work. As a result, Gorman and Bunch work with a team of other specialists to coordinate those efforts, to give patients the best result. According to Bunch, young professionals and adults are the fastest-growing segment of orthodontic patients. Some were 34 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com

“ OUR STAFF IS WHO KEEPS THE WHOLE THING GOING. THEY HAVE SUCH GREAT RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR PATIENTS.

orthodontic treatment who cannot afford it. Bunch and Gorman are grateful to their highly trained, friendly, dedicated team for their devotion to patients. “Our staff is who keeps the whole thing going,” Bunch says. “They have such great relationships with our patients. In fact, that’s one of the most fun parts for me to see. I get to watch some of these kids whom I treated early on grow up and graduate college. We get to know these people because we don’t see them twice a year, but every six to 12 weeks for several years.”

they are finally able to swing it financially. Then there are the young professionals who see themselves on Zoom calls or in selfies and decide they want to straighten their teeth. “Believe it or not, pictures are a big thing because people notice things that maybe they wouldn’t if they were just looking in the mirror,” says Bunch, who has a wife, Lindsay, and two sons, Cash and Luke.
