Christian Daly Is Making a Splash In the Pro Watercross Tour Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Maybe it does run in the family. Christian Daly can’t say for sure, but he knows one thing — he loves to race. Unlike his father Derek, a longtime IndyCar driver and Irish racing legend, and his older brother and IndyCar driver Conor, Christian doesn’t find his need for speed on land but on water instead. Christian’s journey to becoming a Pro Watercross driver happened about a year and a half ago. The 21-year old had always enjoyed riding jet skis, but everything changed when several friends mentioned that he should consider racing. “Several of my buddies race out on Morse Reservoir, and they said, ‘hey, you should come and try a race sometime,’” Christian says. “At the time I said no that I just enjoyed riding for fun. But I finally went to one of the races and immediately fell in love with it. I’ve been doing it ever since.”

Christian’s first race came last August at the P1 AquaX USA race in Whiting, Indiana. Daly finished second place for an impressive debut. Since then, Daly has been splashing his way through the circuit. That first race validated a feeling that he had from the beginning — he could do this and truly compete. “I won’t say that I necessarily felt like a natural, but it really came quick to me,” Christian says. “Once I got on the jet ski, I felt the balance of it, how it turns, how to read the water. After that first race, I thought, ‘Why don’t I keep doing this?’” It Runs In the Family Christian’s newest hobby comes as no surprise to his dad and brothers. The family knows all too well that desire to compete and be in the driver’s seat. With their racing background, it isn’t shocking to hear that the family fully supports Christian and enjoys watching him compete on the water. 6 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atNoblesville.com

Perhaps the least surprised member of the family is Christian’s mother, Beth Boles. Believe it or not, Beth raced jet skis once upon a time as well. Christian’s mom raced stand-up jet skis for quite a while, and when she realized her son was developing a passion for the sport, she was ecstatic. “Obviously, when she heard that I was going to be doing this, she was super stoked and couldn’t wait to go to the races,” Christian says. “My family has been all for it, supporting my dreams and encouraging me to follow them. That has been really helpful and awesome to have that support.” You Built That? Pro Watercross is certainly much more than a hobby for Christian. Once he realized he was going to be racing full time, the 21-year old started looking into jet ski options. He decided to race in the Sport GP class, which requires a top-of-the-line jet ski. So,

Christian decided to build one himself. Last year, he and his dad spent countless hours in Derek’s garage, building the jet ski from the engine out — a process that is daunting to say the least. “There was tons and tons of custom work that went into this boat,” Christian says. “We put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it. We painted it my favorite color — riviera blue.” The end result made it worth it for the father-son duo — a completely modified, triple-cylinder Kawasaki 1100. The custom-built jet ski tops out at 67.7 miles per hour. “Firing it up for the first time ever was exhilarating for me,” Christian says. “It has unbelievable acceleration and one of the best engines that you can get today. Knowing that I’m out there on this boat that my dad and I built together, winning races no less, has been a cool experience.” A Fearless Approach Like most drivers, Christian has had his ups and downs. In one race in Chicago early on in his career last year, Daly made a “rookie mistake” and got impatient trying to push for a lead before hitting a wave wrong. He was thrown straight up in the air before landing on the side railing of his jet ski. The wreck left him with a fractured fibula and cost him a trip to the World Finals, which he was planning to compete in. “That was a huge setback,” he says. “It was unfortunate. I wasn’t able to race in the World Finals and that was tough for me. But I knew I was going to come back even stronger.” It took a month of rehab and training before Christian could get back on the water. His first race back from the gruesome injury was the World atNoblesville.com / JULY 2018 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 7

Championships in Naples, Fla. Daly finished third, proving to himself that he had overcome the injury.

Daly practices several times a week on Morse Reservoir in Noblesville.

Despite the wreck, Christian continues to have a fearless approach on the water. He has learned when to take risks and when to stay the course. Like with anything else, practice makes perfect, though. Christian is a Carmel resident, but most weeks he can be seen practicing on Morse Reservoir in Noblesville. He practices at least twice a week on the lake, and sometimes more, in an effort to continue to grow and learn in a sport that is still quite new to him. Just Getting Started Christian has a full race schedule this year. He will compete in about 10 to 15 races throughout the season, all over the country and the world. His season doesn’t end in the summer, either. His biggest races down the road are at Lake Havasu for the World Finals in October and a race in Thailand in November. Locally, Daly has two main sponsors — Wolfies Grill and Farmers Insurance. He says it’s because of their support that he has been able to continue to pursue his dream and travel around the world doing it. As for the future, Christian doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon. Quite the opposite, he says he’s just getting started. Daly has high expectations as a racer and cementing his legacy in Pro Watercross, but for now, he’s simply enjoying life on the water. “This sport is my getaway,” Christian says. “It is an awesome experience, and the atmosphere each race is incredible. I obviously want to win a lot of races and championships in the future. But I want to be someone who makes a positive impact, too.”

NHS ALUM GAINS E AGLE SCOUT STATUS, TALKS IMPACT OF BOY SCOUTS Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided

This spring Cameron Schlegel received what only four percent of Boy Scouts throughout the nation are granted - the official Eagle Scout badge, commemorating endless hours of community service, group leadership and dedication to fellow Scouts and Troop leaders.

Scout Reservation in Bloomington - all the while on a steady trajectory toward the highly-coveted Eagle badge so few Scouts ultimately earn. “It was something I had been working on for the majority of my life, and growing up it just always seemed like part of my life, and it didn’t seem like anything out of the norm,” says Cameron, an Indy native whose maternal uncle and grandfather were also Eagle Scouts. “At the ceremony where I got the badge, it hit me that it was truly something special. It was not only an extreme weight off my shoulders but a moment of extreme pride because of how much it takes to be an Eagle Scout.”

Cameron began his Scout career in the second grade when he joined Cub Scout Pack 135 in Noblesville. After fourth grade he transitioned to Boy Scout Troop 101, headquartered at First United Methodist Church, and through the years he’s been immersed in community-oriented projects, camping, sporting and craft activities, and Obtaining the Eagle badge is no walk in the out-of-town Scouting sojourns at Michigan’s park, it requires 21 merit badges, leadership Isle Royal National Park and Ransburg positions within various Scout ranks and 10 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atNoblesville.com

100 hours logged toward a service project benefitting the local community. After requirements are met, a panel of officials conducts a review process assessing the individual’s entire Boy Scout career. Only four percent of Boy Scouts are granted this rank after the lengthy review process. The Crossroads of America Council serves 15,000 families throughout Central Indiana, and 410 Scouts earned Eagle rank in 2017 in the Council. “But what is even more impressive is that of the 410 Scouts earning Eagle rank, DelMi District (Hamilton and Tipton Counties) accounted for 107 Eagles last year,” says Joe Wiltrout, Council Scouts Executive & CEO. For Cameron, his service project involved the construction of a walkway on the

grounds of First United Methodist Church to better accommodate elderly church participants. “The church has an organic farm and a garden where the elderly folks can go if they want to garden but don’t have the space for it,” says Cameron, who also played club volleyball during all four of his years at Noblesville High School. “My project was building a walkway path because the ground was extremely uneven and rocky, and I made the path in a wider space for a bench to be put in.”

Cameron Schlegel with his family.

Cameron credits the leaders and fellow Boy Scouts within Troop 101 for providing him with the support system he needed to succeed and says his biggest challenge was taking the personal initiative to progress through the Scout ranks to get to Eagle status. That hard work pays off, though. Recently, Cameron and another fellow Eagle Scout jumped to action in a great display of leadership. When NHS went into a code red lockdown on May 25 due to a safety threat, Cameron and Chad Hutson helped their teacher, Eric Gunderson, secure the classroom. “Those two helped secure my door,” Gunderson says. “They stood with me at the front of the room ready to deal with whatever came next. I’ve known these boys for a long time, and I could not be more proud. They didn’t ask to do something. They took action.”

At Conner Prairie, you can go wherever your imagination takes you. With hundreds of acres to explore, including our newly reimagined River Crossing experience area, we’re igniting curiosity and inspiring guests to discover new lessons in the natural world that surrounds us.

“When people hear that you’re an Eagle Scout, they view you as a leader,” Cameron says. “And when you’re viewed as a leader you take on the responsibility of being an example for others, regardless of whether you want to. The Scouts teach you how to be a leader not only by giving you leadership opportunities but by putting great leaders in front of you and showing you how much of a difference in your life they can make so that you can be interested in making a difference in others’ lives.” atNoblesville.com / JULY 2018 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 11

RUOFF HOME MORTGAGE 350 Westfield Rd, Suite 210 Noblesville, IN 46060 317-774-5471 ruoff.com

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Ron Wise

Ruoff Home Mortgage, based out of Ft. Wayne, Ind., is a privately-owned mortgage banker that was founded in 1984 by Dave Ruoff. Ten years ago, he transferred ownership to son-in-law, Mark Music. At the time, there were 18 employees in northeast Indiana. Over the last decade, however, that number has grown to more than 600 employees at 45 branches in four states. “We’re really proud of how far we’ve come,” says Jennifer Goins, VP branch manager of the Noblesville office, which just opened in May and will celebrate its Grand Opening on July 12. Though they have offices in

several states, including Ohio, Kentucky and Florida, Indiana is their primary state, with a presence in Muncie, Lafayette, Greencastle, Bloomington, Columbus, and locally— Indianapolis, Fishers, Avon, Greenwood and now Noblesville.

when it comes to closings due to digital technology, which enables clients to sign the majority of their closing documents electronically prior to arriving at the closing table.

“I’m proud that we’re a local lender making local decisions,” says Goins, noting that they’ve been ranked the number one purchase lender in the Hoosier state for the past two years, having secured the most purchased mortgage loans.

“It seems like today everybody’s time is a commodity, so the easier we can make it and the less time consuming that it is for our clients, the better off they are,” Goins says. “Not only do our clients like it but all parties involved do, including the real estate agents, the title companies and the sellers.”

They are also one of the fastest-growing companies in the country. This is due, in part, to the fact that they provide their clients with a seamless transaction process

Having minimal documents to sign has cut the closing time in half (from 60 to less than 30 minutes). In addition, the online application process is smooth.

The company is a proud supporter of various community sponsorships such as the Ruoff Home Music Center. For the past two years, they also sponsored the Indy car drivers and scored a win in 2017 at the Indianapolis 500 when Takuma Sato finished first. In addition, they sponsor the Indianapolis Colts, the Indiana Pacers and a number of college sports as well. “We’re really proud of our presence here in Indiana,” Goins says. As far as business goes, Ruoff Home Mortgage focuses on purchases and refinance transactions. They are also one of the approved lenders to offer programs through Indiana Housing and Community Development, which aids clients who are in need of down payment assistance. They also do conventional loans, FHA loans, VA loans for veterans, jumbo lending and USDA, a rural housing program. “We now are offering a renovation lending product where the client can buy a home that may need minimal upgrades or perhaps might need to be completely renovated,” Goins says. “We also do new construction loans.”

“THE CULTURE HERE AT RUOFF IS A BIG PART OF OUR SUCCESS. WE’RE ALL A TEAM WITH THE SAME MINDSET AND GOALS.” - JENNIFER GOINS

Goins, originally from Richmond, Ind., has thrived here in Indianapolis. She’s been in the business for more than 20 years (more than five of those with Ruoff Home Mortgage) and has worked in banking and owned her own mortgage shop. This company, however, is the perfect fit. The Noblesville team consists of five licensed loan originators — they are looking to fill three more spots. “The culture here at Ruoff is a big part of our success,” Goins adds. “We’re all a team with the same mindset and goals.” Visit ruoff.com for more information on Ruoff Home Mortgage, located at 350 Westfield Rd., Suite 210 in the new BlueSky building. atNoblesville.com / JULY 2018 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 13

Welcome Back

Colts Coach Frank Reich Talks Faith, Hoosier Roots & Grand Park Sports Campus Writer / Josh Brown . Photography provided by Brian Brosmer & Indianapolis Colts

Frank Reich returns to the Colts after serving as quarterbacks coach in 2009 with Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy.

rank Reich’s coaching career has truly come full circle, and he couldn’t be happier. The new Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts is right back where it all started for him. Reich began his career in 2006 with the Colts as an intern before working his way up to quarterbacks coach in 2009 alongside Colts legends Tony Dungy, Peyton Manning and Bill Polian. Those relationships, coupled with a resume that now includes a Super Bowl ring as the Offensive Coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles last year, have helped Reich land a job that he says is a dream come true. In many ways, Reich is back home in Indianapolis. “If I could have written up a plan of what would be the ideal scenario, the ideal team and place, this was it,” Reich says.

“Indianapolis is where I got my coaching start. I came into the organization and got to work with guys like Peyton Manning, Tony Dungy, Jeff Saturday the list goes on, but these are great men. To get a chance to come back here now is pretty special.” The Reichs have ties to the Indy community, which has certainly made the reunion feel like a homecoming of sorts for the family. Two of Reich’s three daughters graduated high school in the area when he first started with the Colts in 2006 — his middle daughter from Hamilton Southeastern and his youngest daughter from Heritage Christian. “The Hoosier hospitality has been unbelievable,” Reich says. “This is like home to us. We have family in this area and developed close friendships from my first time here. I’m thankful for the opportunity to be back.” While Reich wasn’t the first choice for 18 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atNoblesville.com

the position, the Colts quickly realized he was the best fit. After the fallout with Josh McDaniels, several reports said Polian, Dungy and Manning personally reached out to Colts Owner Jim Irsay and General Manager Chris Ballard to endorse Reich for the head coaching position. Reich watched from afar and, despite his interest, did not make the first move in having his agent reach out to the Colts. Instead, he decided if it was meant to be that it would be. Looking back now, Reich says the endorsement of those Colts legends is humbling. “It really is humbling because those are some tremendous men, coaches and players,” Reich says. “In this business you just try to work hard and do your job. You work around a lot of great people and learn a lot from them. When people like that give you a vote of confidence, it means a lot.”

Faith & Football Reich has something on his resume that not too many NFL coaches have. After being drafted in 1985 by the Buffalo Bills and playing in the NFL for nine seasons, Reich took a break from football but knew he would want to return to coach one day. Before the desire to coach in 2006, Reich actually felt called to ministry and went to seminary. He even served as pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina — living out his faith and serving the community. Reich isn’t shy about his faith, either. He says it has played a vital role in his life and shaping him as a leader and a man. “I wouldn’t change one day of being in ministry,” Reich says. “It has really shaped and formed me as a person. Going into ministry was something I really felt called to do. I didn’t know where it was going to take me, but I knew that I loved coaching people and encouraging people. I learned about myself as a teacher during that time. To continue to develop those gifts and take them back into coaching in the NFL has been a lot of fun.”

Working Out In Westfield As the Colts gear up for their first season under Reich, they’ve found a new home for the summer — Grand Park in Westfield. The huge, 400-acre sports complex will host the team from the end of July through August for training camp. It is the first summer the Colts will work out at the facility in a deal the team announced back in September that will span 10 years. The Colts will host an open camp and provide opportunities for fans to connect with the team and the players throughout the summer. One of Reich’s first tasks after taking over as head coach was to visit Grand Park, and he has been nothing less than impressed by the facility. atNoblesville.com / JULY 2018 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 19

“The people here, the staff has been so accommodating,” Reich says. “When you are going to host an NFL team for training camp, that is a pretty big deal. This place is so incredible that it can handle it, but it isn’t just about the facility. It is about the people. We’ve found that the people here are top notch and helping us do something that is exciting for our team and the City of Westfield. “I remember the first time driving up,” Reich adds. “They told me a little about it, but as we are driving up you see all of these fields. Then you walk inside and there are three, full-size soccer fields. I’ve never seen a facility like it.”

Getting Back on Track With the season right around the corner, Reich’s focus is to get the Colts back on track. He is well aware of the fanbase and the team’s expectations. Luck or no Luck, Reich’s goals remain the same — playing hard and being in a position to get back to the playoffs. The Colts have built the team and the draft that they wanted, and despite Andrew Luck’s status for the season, Reich is confident that the team can perform at a high level. “It’s all about the people and the process,” Reich says. “We just have to build the team one player at a time and have the commitment and the work ethic. When that happens, it doesn’t take long. You can flip your record in a hurry in the NFL. I was just a part of it with Philadelphia. But we all have to do it together, and it really has to be an organizational thing. The players and the coaches have to be tight, and there has to be a trust in one another and a willingness to commit to fighting for it every day no matter what.”

We have an elevated level of service and menu options that have really helped us take off.”

Prine stressed that the fine cuisine, combined with new menu offerings, have also helped boost business. “Our whole diverse menu is entirely new to the area,” Prine says. “We have Chef ’s Small Plates, which are delicious bites of fine food, like the Ale-laced Chicken Tenders, with honey mustard and BBQ, garlic mashed potatoes. We also have an Almond Crusted, Seared Tuna, Blackened Lime Shrimp and Crispy Calamari, among many other selections. The Chicken Tenders are my personal favorite.” The new Chef-Inspired soups have also been a hot item. “The Chicken Tortilla and Lentil, (Vegan or Gluten Free), have been popular and so has the Wild Mushroom,” Prine says. “Our Tomato Bisque and Wild Mushroom soups have also done well.” Prine says the Fresh To Order franchise started in 2006. It also has restaurants in South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. Prine noted that Fresh To Order’s healthier choices that are made quickly have been well received by the Noblesville community. “Newer customers have told us they like how we are healthy, casual and fast,” Prine says. “We focus on the dietary needs of our customers with many healthy food choices.” The staff at Fresh To Order make sure everything is made fresh from scratch with the highest quality ingredients. Where Quality Comes First atNoblesville.com / JULY 2018 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 25

Owner, Jason Lawson

NOBLESVILLE BUSINESS CREATES MASTERCRAFTED STONE & GLASS PRODUCTS Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Amy Payne

Stonesmiths Inc. may be known for their excellent custom stonework, but it’s a familial core that lies at the heart of Jason Lawson’s Noblesville-based company. “We’re not family, but we are like a family,” says Thomas Kinney, a templator at Stonesmiths. “We all kind of know

everything that’s going on with each other.”

from Angie’s List.

Founded in 2006 by Lawson, the humble business has serviced homeowners and businesses all across Indianapolis and beyond over the years. Located at 12244 IN-32, Stonesmiths are members in good standing in the Marble Institute of America. They also have an A rating with the Better Business Bureau and have been honored with the Super Service Award

A native of Noblesville and graduate of Noblesville High School, Lawson studied business and finance at Butler University. He went on to work in several fields before discovering his passion for stone. After working as an installer for another granite fabricator, Lawson eventually decided he wanted to start his own business specializing in custom stone service.

26 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atNoblesville.com

“I was working for someone else and just realized that I could do it better and take care of the customers better,” Lawson says. “So I got a couple builders to commit to working with me and started the company.” This customer care is one of many reasons why Stonesmiths has found so much success in the Indianapolis area. In fact, almost all of their new business comes via word-of-mouth referral. Of course,

there are several other factors that also make Stonesmiths stand out. It all starts with the precise measurement with their laser templator. They also offer a broad selection of granite, marble and glass products. Pair all of this with a friendly, expert staff, and Stonesmiths is a logical choice for stone renovations. “[We take pride in] customer service, quality, honesty and integrity,” Lawson says. “Those would be the biggest things.”

When a customer approaches Stonesmiths, they are met with experts who work to make their custom stone surface the best it can possibly be. Typically, there are a number of steps that unfold in order to get the job done. At the beginning, Stonesmiths develops their fabrication process with the intent of getting customers involved from the getgo. When it comes to customization, there are really no limits to what Stonesmiths can make happen.

“There’s nothing we won’t tackle,” Kinney says. After measurements are made and design is discussed, clients choose the granite, marble or quartz slab that will be used for their project. Stonesmiths even allows customers to place a plastic template on the stone so that its cut just the way they want. Following installation, Stonesmiths still makes sure to take care of the customer, standing behind their work with warranties and a pledge to address any problems that arise later on. Over the years, Stonesmiths has amassed a plethora of positive reviews raving about their work. At the end of the day, though, they ultimately take pride in not only being a group of hardworking craftsman, but also a family. Stonesmiths Inc. is located at 12244 IN-32 in Noblesville, or you can visit them online at StonesmithsIndy.com and give them a call at 317-770-1333.

STAY HYDRATED THIS SUMMER

The kids are on summer break and summer is in full swing, and as you might guess, temperatures in Indiana tend to climb the highest during the month of July. As you’re planning for the next family outing or kids’ sporting event, make sure you’re staying hydrated.

“You lose water when you sweat, so that’s why it’s important to replace fluids in your body,” Dr. Homsi says. “During the summer months, as we’re spending more time outside, it’s even more important to intentionally hydrate our bodies.”

“SOMETIMES DEHYDRATION CAN OCCUR SIMPLY FROM NOT DRINKING ENOUGH WATER.” While the human body can tolerate dehydration for short periods of time (a few hours), ongoing dehydration will affect your overall health. In addition to feeling thirsty, signs of dehydration include dry mouth, dizziness and fatigue. “Sometimes dehydration can occur simply from not drinking enough water,” says Dr. Mohamed Homsi, cardiac electrophysiologist at Indiana University Health West Hospital. “Other times it can be caused by diarrhea, vomiting, high fever or increased urination.” Excessive sweating can also lead to dehydration.

The amount of water you should drink each day is dependent on many factors, including your health and lifestyle. A good rule of thumb is to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, but some people may need more and others less. Talk with your doctor to find a good baseline for you.

with fluid, electrolytes and carbohydrate calories that are lost during a workout.” If you don’t need a sports drink, try to stick with water. Add flavoring to your water with lemon, lime mint or cucumber. Drinking lots of water is a healthy habit that is often learned from parents. Teach kids to drink enough water so that their urine is almost clear. And yes, this means they’ll probably be going to the bathroom more often throughout the day. Dehydration is a common problem, but the solution is an easy one. Drinking lots of water is part of a healthy lifestyle that can help avoid health problems and medical interventions later.

Can sports drinks help with hydration? According to experts, there’s a time and place for sports drinks if you exercise regularly. “When used as intended – to replenish fluids after true physical exertion- sports drinks can be a good option,” Dr. Homsi says. “Sports drinks can re-supply the body 30 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atNoblesville.com
