Forest Park to Hold the 2019 July 4th Fireworks Festival New area created to showcase local artists, businesses Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing
If you’ve spent any time in Noblesville, it’s likely you have a fond memory of Forest Park. It’s a gem of a park, complete with wooded trails, playground equipment, and a 100-year-old carousel. This 150-acre park, established in December 1925, includes a skate park, swimming pool, picnic areas, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, shelters with grills and volleyball sand lots, a “Tom Thumb” miniature golf course, and a 9-hole golf course, the first built in Hamilton County. In addition, the Logan and Emerson Baseball Fields are located in Forest Park, as is the Forest Park Inn banquet facility.
“The park as you see it today is very different than how it used to be,” says Mike Hoffmeister, Assistant Director of Parks. There used to be more carnival games, including a .22 shooting range and some carnival rides. “We’ve made a number of renovations over the past 20-25 years to turn it into what it is today.” For years the Fourth of July Festival has always been held at the local high school. Due to road construction, however, this year the planning committee proposed to Mayor Ditslear that they hold the festivities at Forest Park, which offers expansive space for activities. “He was all for it, and I suspect one reason atNoblesville.com / JULY 2019 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 5
might be tied to nostalgia because years ago the Fourth of July Fireworks used to be shot off at Forest Park,” Hoffmeister says, noting that back in the 80s, when Mayor Ditslear was with the Chamber of Commerce, he lit off a firework with the hill and the courthouse behind him. “I think he remembers how much fun that was,” Hoffmeister says. “And he wants to make sure others in the community have the chance to experience it.” In addition to the regular park amenities, the festival will offer corn hole, a zip line, ninja course, and trackless train. It will also include a main stage with live music from a Milwaukee band called Road Trip. The night
will open with the Fishers School of Rock. There will also be a beer garden featuring local breweries, as well as 25 food truck vendors. In addition, the local recruiting center with the U.S. Army will be there with inflatables and a rock wall. Additionally, for the third year in a row, on the most patriotic of days, they will have a swearingin ceremony on the main stage at 8 p.m. “It’s pretty cool. They have someone high in command come and give the oath,” Hoffmeister says. Little ones can partake in the kid zone that will have inflatables, face painting, balloon artists, an arts activity, a roaming juggler, and a kids’ stage featuring a Dr. Seuss show, a pirate show, and comedy magic show.
For a price, the Nickel Plate Heritage Railway will run short train excursions that day on the hour between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. “This will be the first time the train has run in Noblesville for years,” Herrington says. New this year, the committee has created areas with booth space inside the park to showcase local artists, merchants, businesses, and nonprofits. The parade begins at 2:30 p.m. and the festival at 4 p.m. Fireworks will start at 10 p.m. and last precisely 23 minutes. “We pay for 30 minutes’ worth, but we don’t like a dull show, so we’ll blast them, one right after another,” Hoffmeister explains. To curtail parking difficulties, they are running trolleys and busses throughout the 6 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2019 / atNoblesville.com
day from area schools. In addition, festival goers—especially those with strollers—are encouraged to park downtown and walk the short distance to Forest Park. Robert Herrington, Communications Manager for the City and co-chair with Hoffmeister for this year’s Festival, has been a resident of Noblesville since 1994. Now that he has children, he enjoys watching them make memories as they relate to the park system. “My oldest has been in summer camp for three years now, so every time we pass Forest Park, I hear, ‘That’s where summer camp is!’” Herrington says. “It’s great to see my kids have memories of local parks. That’s what we’re hoping the Fourth of July Festival will be for folks in the community.” Note: The parade is sponsored by Gaylor Electric; the festival is presented by IDI Composites International, Inc. There is a cost for food, beverages, train, carousel, putt-putt, and pool. For more information, visit NoblesvilleFireworksFestival.com

The Indianapolis Colts have multiple reasons to be optimistic about their upcoming season. After a 1-5 start last year the team went on to notch a 10-6 record, earning their first playoff spot since 2014 in the process and becoming the third team in the league’s history to make the playoffs after starting with a 1-5 record. Nevertheless, Running Back Nyheim Hines, who joined the Colts last season after playing at North Carolina State,
says the team’s approach moving into the fall is focusing on steady collective improvement, rather than setting specific goals for their regular season record or playoff advancement. “I’ve been on a lot of football teams throughout my life and last year was probably the most group-oriented team I’ve played for,” Hines says. “We didn’t hang our heads or blame each other when we were 1-5. We just all held each other accountable. Now the expectations are higher but we’re still holding each other accountable and everybody’s doing their part. The biggest thing is trusting that the guy next to you will do his job.” atNoblesville.com / JULY 2019 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 9
Hines became third overall in receptions for rookies with 63 catches during the 20182019 season — third in Colts franchise history, which is fairly impressive for a running back — and attributes his success to a diligent study of how his position fits in with the Colts’ overall offensive approach. “For me it was learning more about how the offense works and tuning in when coach was talking about routes, he says. “I was always taking notes because even when coach was talking to T.Y. (Hilton) I knew I might be out there at some point. And staying tuned in to what Andrew (Luck) likes, because whatever Andrew tells you to do, that’s what you do.”
“WE REALLY HAVE HAD A GREAT RECEPTION FROM THE PEOPLE HERE AT GRAND PARK. THERE HAVE BEEN REALLY GOOD VIBES ALL AROUND THE LAYOUT. THIS FEELS LIKE IT’S A HIGH-QUALITY NFL TRAINING CAMP BEING TREATED RIGHT.” - FRANK REICH -
Linebacker Anthony Walker, who finished second in tackles for the Colts last season, says the team never lost confidence in each other even during the 1-5 start. “We established good camaraderie during training camp, and we knew we had the right guys in the locker room and the leaders to turn things around after things didn’t start the way we wanted them to,” says Walker, now in his third season with the Colts. “We were in the playoff mindset even when we were 1-5, so after that you can’t lose a game and we knew that.” In August, the Colts will head to Grand Park Sports Campus for the second year in a row for their official training camp, and Hines says training at the venue last year was a refreshing change of pace. “It was pretty cool to get away from 56th Street and go somewhere else,” he says. “The Westfield facility is nice. I’ve had friends who have had basketball tournaments there. I don’t know if our 56th Street facility could hold all the fans that came out, so it was good to be up there and I’m excited to be back there. And it’s cool for the fans to see how hard we’re working and get the first glimpse of the team before our preseason games.” 10 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2019 / atNoblesville.com
The Colts face the Buffalo Bills on August 8 for their first preseason game and will host the Cleveland Browns for a few joint practices prior to their preseason matchup. Head Coach Frank Reich says Grand Park provides an optimal setting for his players to prepare mentally and physically. “This is an exciting place,” Reich says of the facility. “We really have had a great reception from the people here at Grand Park. There have been really good vibes all around the layout. This feels like it’s a high-quality NFL training camp being treated right.” There is no charge to attend the training camp at Grand Park, but attendees must procure a ticket to enter. “You want to use that time at training camp to connect with your brothers, and the Grand Park facility allowed us to do that last year,” Walker says. “Camp is hard and
it’s supposed to be hard, but we had a lot of fun with the walk to practice every day and seeing the fans. I’m looking forward to it again this year.” Hines reiterates that the team isn’t focusing on specific long-term playoff goals at this point but rather day-to-day progress as the regular season approaches. “We’re just talking about how we’re going
atNoblesville.com / JULY 2019 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 11
to get back to that level of play in the Division Round when we lost last season,” he says. “We’re not talking about making it to the playoffs or going 10-6 again. We’re talking about getting one percent better every day. Every day is an opportunity to get better.” For a full schedule of Indianapolis Colts training camp events and ticketing info, visit grandpark.org/sports/colts.

Noblesville High School (NHS) Senior Abby Hanson is set to attend the University of Vermont as an English major in the fall. She has been writing for as long as she can remember and is currently an editor on her school newspaper, the Mill Stream, and an intern at the Noblesville Parks and Recreation Department. “When I was little, it was short stories. Now it’s mainly poetry,” Hanson said. “I started writing poetry, like many kids do, in middle school. It was about as angsty and terrible as you’d expect, but I kept practicing, and under the guidance of the best English teachers a girl could ask for, I got better.” At the regional level, several thousand entries were submitted to the Scholastic Writing Awards. And at the national level, more than 350,000 entries were submitted. This was Hanson’s third year entering the competition. This year, Hanson won the most gold keys out of any student in Indiana. Gold keys are the highest regional awards granted in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. When a student atNoblesville.com / JULY 2019 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 15
receives a gold key, it indicates that their piece will be judged at the national level. “It’s funny to look back on how much I’ve changed since I was a sophomore with one gold key, completely confused by the submission process and totally uncertain of myself as a writer,” Hanson said. “I’ve grown so much since then.”
Founded in 2002
A free, public charter school serving students in grades 6-12 with smaller class sizes and an individualized academic approach
According to Hanson, the Scholastic Writing Awards have been an invaluable part of her creative journey, providing her with confidence and a community that she wouldn’t have otherwise. This year, Hanson submitted a writing portfolio, something only seniors can do. “My writing portfolio was the only one from Indiana to make it to national judging, and it was one of only 16 nationally to win a Silver with Distinction Portfolio Award,” Hanson said. “And because I won this award as well as a gold medal for one of my individual pieces, I was invited back to Carnegie Hall this year. I’m so unbelievably excited.” NHS English Teacher Bill Kenley is one of Hanson’s teachers and has been at NHS for more than 20 years. He is also a published author with this High School Runner series.
One of the highest performing alternative schools in the country in numerous categories
According to Kenley, Abby, as a student, is very much self-directed.

“By that I don't mean at all that she isn't teachable. She's a sponge. What I mean is that her curiosity and interest in her chosen subject – poetry – put her teacher in the position of an advisor more than what most would think of as a traditional English teacher,” Kenley said. According to Kenley, Hanson writes as if she’s part of a larger tradition of poets and writers. “While many young writers believe they're being original with their work, they're actually subconsciously and unknowingly repeating and mimicking previous writing,” Kenley said. “[Hanson] is aware to a pretty amazing extent of the traditions she's becoming a part of. And she's naturally very talented.”

Lollipops. Pens on chains. Maybe a vault. All banks are the same, and once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all, right? While STAR Bank certainly has lollipops available for its young (and young at heart) customers, its key differentiating element lies outside—not inside—its walls. “We are one of few community banks left in Indiana, so community engagement and involvement is a top priority,” Amanda Rubeck, Vice President and Senior Retail Sales Officer, says. As a community bank, STAR is committed to being community conscious. In the same way that individuals and businesses invest in accounts and loans at STAR, STAR invests in the local community. This summer, STAR Bank decided to make that community investment not just outside their walls, but outside of all walls by sponsoring an outdoor summer concert series. Less than four miles down the road from STAR’s Noblesville branch, Dillon Park is the venue for the series.
“As a community bank dedicated to supporting where our customers live, work, and play, sponsoring the Noblesville Parks Summer Concert Series was a perfect fit,” Rubeck says. Thanks to STAR’s presenting sponsorship, the concert series is free and open to the public, making the concerts perfect for everyone of all ages. “We love that it is a free event that involves families, as there are not as many free
events as there used to be across most communities,” Rubeck says. “[It’s] a great way to support the parks and bring families together!” If you find yourself on a breezy Thursday night longing for local music, the great outdoors, your hometown community, or all three, rest assured. STAR Bank—a community bank whose employees, according to Rubeck, “grow by serving others”—has you covered.

never stops. You will continue to learn new things, all the way to retirement. You will laugh and you will cry. Sometimes with others, and sometimes by yourself, but when you have the support of your family, friends and the community you serve, it makes it all worth it. Noblesville JULY EVENTS 4

The Noblesville Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks Festival is a family-friendly tradition that dates back to 1997. This year’s festivities consist of several changes, including location and extended event times. Construction transforming the intersection of Field Drive and Cumberland Road into a roundabout will close that area during the summer and caused the committee to look at an alternative site instead of Noblesville High School. The festival is expanding two hours and will last from 4 to 10 p.m at Forest Park. The grand finale of the day will be the fireworks display at 10 p.m. Viewing will be available throughout the park. Forest Park 2:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Food Truck Fridays return to Federal Hill Commons in 2019! Food Truck Fridays, presented by HAMILTON COUNTY CHIROPRACTIC, will include 5-7 food trucks and live acoustic music by local musician Craig Thurston. Food Truck Fridays are held near the Market Plaza and Noblesville Rotary Club Shelter from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Fridays through September. Guests also are welcome to bring their own lunch to the park. Federal Hill Commons 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
