at the club, it became clear that club leaders needed to expand services for members. Last fall several renovation projects began Harbour Trees Golf Club will celebrate its under Blaze Construction, Inc., including 50th anniversary next year. “Before the Beach Club existed, Harbour Trees had something for the golfing family but not the whole family,” Gigante says. “I had a golf pro tell me once, ‘If you win the families, you’ll win in this business.’” It was sound advice. Over time, the Beach Club’s popularity soared. As more and more people began expressing an interest in booking rehearsal dinners, birthday parties and other events
According to Gigante, the renovation also involved increasing the size of the kitchen by 985 square feet, in order to handle the restaurant load while simultaneously accommodating banquets and private parties. The club leaders also added 800 square feet to the gym because of an increasing interest in yoga, Pilates and other floor exercises.
says. “The views are something to see on a beautiful evening. We’re excited about that.” As one might expect, summer is the club’s busy season when people attend for social reasons. “What distinguishes us from every other club is that we have this wonderful asset right on our doorstep, which is the lake,” Gigante says. Harbour Trees is the only club in the Indianapolis area that adjoins Morse Lake. “Lake culture is deeply rooted in everything we do, from the colors we use to the food we serve to the attire people wear,” Gigante says. “We are very relaxed in our way of doing business.”
“We didn’t have the room for that with all of Attendees often go from the Golf Club the equipment, so we created a space lakeside to the Beach Club, which means lots of that can open up to the water,” Gigante swimsuits and sandals. atNoblesville.com / JULY 2020 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 5
“We live by the set of rules that you do along the lake, which is that typically on the weekend, you don’t have to go far to have a great time,” Gigante says. While location is a key to the facility’s success, Gigante points to the people as the secret sauce. “We have some of the best people and families - without them, it wouldn’t be what it is,” says Gigante, who also appreciates his staff. Though club leaders have increased deck capacity by approximately 400 to 500 square feet due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year they won’t be able to maximize it. While they would love to hold a grand opening, that’s not in the cards either. “After an expansion, everyone is excited to use it, and our members are no different,” Gigante says. “This spring and summer, cars, bikes and golf carts were always coming by the site to check on the progress. Unfortunately, this year we can’t go full throttle into service.” The club has yet to hold any events since reopening after renovations, but leaders look forward to getting back to the old ways of lakeside live music as soon as they are able. For now, the added space helps to spread out guests, allowing for social distancing. “We’ve managed to utilize our space better,” Gigante says. The club has also taken innovative measures in terms of remote capability with the kitchen setup. A server can take an order on the deck, and the order is then routed to the kitchen, thereby minimizing human interaction. “I’m cautiously optimistic that more and more people will start feeling more normal and comfortable,” Gigante says. “It’s our job to make sure we keep everyone socially distant and provide a safe environment.”
Owner Andy Gigante

Gigante says the Beach Club has been instrumental in teaching children how to interact with adults and learn about rules, behavior and safety. “The socialization for the children is as big a benefit of the Beach Club as anything,” he says. “They are learning social graces and behavioral lessons that will make them better human beings in the future. I’m proud of that.” Plus, people of all ages make friends at the club. “Walking into the Harbour Trees Beach Club is a lot less intimidating than walking into a traditional golf and country club,” Gigante says. “Here, everyone immediately feels at home.” Harbour Trees Beach Club is located at 100 Clarendon Drive in Noblesville. Greg Glaros knows ice cream. Having been in the game for nearly 20 years, with two Handel’s Ice Cream locations on Indy’s north side, Glaros saw potential in launching a third location in Noblesville and secured a spot on Cabela Parkway in the Patio at Saxony MarketPlace last year. “We felt it was the perfect time to expand but stay on the north side,” Glaros says. Glaros grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, home
of the original Handel’s store and became a fan of the ice cream shop as a youngster. Little did he realize at the time that as an adult, he’d eventually be operating not one, but three Handel’s stores.
“I worked in that corporate world for a long time, and I really wanted to control my own destiny,” Glaros says of his decision to transition into the ice cream business. “I was going to do pizza at first, but my brother-in-law told me that Handel’s was franchising, and that was it for me. I never forgot how good the ice cream was.”
Prior to entering the ice cream business, Glaros worked in consumer electronics for RCA and Thomson for 25 years. He relocated to Central Indiana in 1991, and 10 years later made a decision to exit the Glaros’s Fishers store saw success fairly corporate life and try his hand at ice cream. quickly, and by 2004 he was opening a second location in Carmel. Glaros officially opened his first Handel’s franchise in Fishers in June of 2002, and he “Both areas where we have stores have been hasn’t looked back since. very receptive, and we can’t wait to get atNoblesville.com / JULY 2020 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 9
things going in Noblesville,” he says. “The Carmel store was a little more of a challenge in the beginning because it’s somewhat hidden back from the road and doesn’t have that great visibility you want, but word got out over time. People on the north side have welcomed us with open arms and seem to like the product.” Such reception is what prompted Glaros to open the Noblesville store, and he feels his new location in the Patio at Saxony MarketPlace is an optimal spot for expanding the Handel’s customer base on the north side of Indy. “We wanted to separate from where our other stores are, but still do somewhere that was still on the north side,” Glaros explains. “The Hamilton Town Center area is growing so rapidly with housing developments, retail locations and restaurants. Cabela Parkway is just starting out and will be full of retailers eventually.” Glaros secured the Noblesville spot last fall and says the coronavirus outbreak did not have a major impact on the construction timeline for the new store opening. “We didn’t have to adjust too much - we were thinking early June for the opening last year, and had to push it back a little but not too much,” he says. “The contractors didn’t miss a beat, which was surprising.” Glaros says what separates Handel’s from many other ice cream stores is the fact that each location makes its products from scratch.

“Our claim to fame is that we make our ice cream right on site, every day,” he says. “We have two batch freezers at each of our stores and we make ice cream all day long during the busy months. We use the finest ingredients and we have our own company mix. Also, our add-ins are the best. We don’t skimp - you’re not going to be looking for chocolate chips or pecans. Your ice cream’s going to be loaded with them.” One of the signature flavors offered at Handel’s is chocolate pecan, although Glaros says here in Indiana at his stores, several other selections have become customers faves, including Spouse Like a House, which includes malted vanilla ice cream with Reese’s Peanut Butter ripple and chocolate-covered pretzels, as well as Graham Central Station, featuring graham flavored ice cream with a graham cracker ripple and chocolate-covered graham pieces. “All the standard flavors like chocolate chip and butter pecan are in-demand at my stores too, for sure,” says Glaros, adding that his personal favorite flavors are Spouse Like a House and Black Cherry. Banana splits, sundaes and smoothies, as well as quarts and pints of ice cream, yogurt and sherbet, are also available. Glaros feels his new location will become an enjoyable new meeting place for families and friends, as well as a quality employer for all ages in Noblesville. “We’ve gotten a lot of good feedback and excitement on Facebook, and consumers seem to be excited about us coming to the area,” Glaros says. “So we’re feeling positive about it, and we’re ready to go.” Handel’s Ice Cream is located in the Patio at Saxony MarketPlace, at 14165 Cabela Parkway in Noblesville. His favorite job in the military was being part of the VQ-2, which was a fleet air reconnaissance squadron of the U.S. Navy. After his years of service, he became a federal police officer for several years.
Yankee Trader Fireworks is a Noblesvillebased firework shop for customers with varying degrees of experience with fireworks - or none at all. The business is owned and operated by J.J. Pompi, a U.S. military veteran. Pompi considers it important to provide customers with only the best fireworks at reasonable prices, so they know just what to get for their special event.
After his service in the military and federal police, Pompi retired to Indiana, where he started putting on fireworks shows for fun. His two favorite hobbies are fireworks and coin collecting. He started selling firework cases as a side hobby, and the endeavor continued to grow until he decided to make a business out of it.
“Fireworks are pricey and you don’t always know what they all do,” Pompi says. “Does it fizz out? What does it do? Over the years, I put on shows and had stuff fizz out on me. I did my research and looked for the best fireworks.”

ASHLIN HADDEN INSURANCE 10911 Greenfield Ave. 765-432-8989
Writer / Julie Yates Photographer Provided
Ashlin Hadden, owner and managing broker of Ashlin Hadden Insurance located at 10911 Greenfield Avenue, is committed to providing her customers with the coverage that best fits their needs. By taking time to develop relationships with her clients, she strives to match their specific needs with the best policy available from the 40 different companies she partners with. Licensed in all 50 states, yet firmly rooted in the Noblesville community, she offers home, auto, life and e-commerce insurance protection. Originally from Indiana, Hadden was a bank branch manager in Chicago-land area before moving back home in 2005. Although not initially interested in an insurance career, she accepted a position with Liberty Mutual. During the interview process, she was told it was a male-dominated industry and “The men agents will out-sell you everyday.” That cautionary advice only spurred Hadden to be successful. “I won Rookie of the Year and ranked first in the state of Indiana and third in the country,” Hadden says. “I worked hard to get my customers’ trust, but I realized that every year, their premiums would go up. My clients asked me if I could do anything about it, but I was a captive agent and could only sell one company’s policies. So, in 2008, I felt the only way to do what was right for keep my customers was to go out on my own.” The gamble paid off and through her genuine interest in providing customers with the right protection, Ashlin Hadden Insurance became successful. At the end of May, the business moved into its new Greenfield Avenue location. In addition,

Offering e-commerce insurance is one example of how the agency meets the needs of its customers. Three years ago, a client came to Hadden who wanted to sell on Amazon but was required to have an e-commerce policy. At the time, there was no classification codes for online retailers and the needed insurance was hard to find. After much research and investigation, the company is now able to offer this niche coverage.
“Although I’m licensed in all 50 states, I’m committed to developing relationships with my local customers,” she adds. “I never wanted to be a typical agent offering one product or one choice. I want to be their personal insurance agent as they progress through life.”
“In the beginning, I realized there isn’t much profit in selling individual e-commerce policies, but just because a business isn’t a brick and mortar one, doesn’t mean they don’t need protection,” Hadden says. “What happened was my first e-commerce client belonged to a Facebook group with 15,000 followers. Owner Marcus Colson
Writer / Trisha Turner Photographer / Whitney Williams
Marcus Colson and his parents spent much of 2002 distributing fliers and canvassing neighborhoods. They were spreading the word about their new, local restaurant that served pizza made from recipes they’d created themselves. That restaurant, Pizza by the Harbour, is celebrating its 18th anniversary in July and since its opening, a lot has changed for the business and the world around it. Menu offerings have come and gone. The surrounding Cicero and Morse Lake area has seen new developments. Much of the restaurant’s advertising is done online instead of door to door. Through it all, Pizza by the Harbour has continued to attract longtime residents and newcomers alike. Nearly two decades later,
customers are still raving about the crunchyon-the-outside, gooey-on-the-inside pizza, and the freshly rolled breadsticks. “I want our restaurant to be known for a really good-tasting pizza, and for people to walk away with a good feeling every time,” Colson says. “We know as long as we’re putting a smile on people’s faces and we’re truly happy to serve customers, it really shows, on the phone and in person.” Pizza by the Harbour sticks to carry-out and delivery orders, primarily serving those who live within its five-mile delivery radius. However, customers - many of whom refer to the restaurant as simply Pizza Harbour - also come from locales like Westfield, Fishers and Tipton to grab carry-out and take advantage of the discount offered to those outside the delivery range. When Colson and his parents, Steve and atNoblesville.com / JULY 2020 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 19
Bonnie Colson of Noblesville, decided to open a pizza place, they wanted to own an independent business serving dishes that showcased their own tastes. The family selected the site of a former shoe store that, at the time, was surrounded only by grass. They relied on Colson’s experience working at a pizzeria in college, as well as their own palates, to build the menu. They believed that if they liked it, others would too. And others certainly did. It didn’t take long, Colson says, before folks were talking
about the Colsons’ new restaurant. Lines began to form. “Success comes when people tell you it’s their favorite and they won’t go anywhere else for pizza,” says Colson, a Tipton native who currently lives in Fishers. “It’s not the cheapest pizza, and we don’t want it to be. We want quality ingredients, so people know it’s going to be what they want.” Not that there haven’t been adjustments made along the way. Colson says he and the rest of the 17-member crew at Pizza by the Harbour regularly tinker with the menu, adding or subtracting offerings based on popularity and new ideas from employees, vendors and customers. The traditional pepperoni pizza is the perennial favorite at the restaurant, but other popular selections include some that are unique to Pizza by the Harbour. Case in point - the Harbour Hot Chicken pizza, featuring breaded chicken marinated in

hot sauce and served on a ranch base. A new item, introduced by way of employee suggestion, also shows promise - it’s a pizza featuring macaroni and cheese with Cajun spice and bacon. And then there are the stuffed breadsticks. Customers can select any two pizza toppings for the filling (pepperoni and cheese are the top picks, according to Colson). The way delivery drivers work has changed as well, with printed maps and directions guiding the way when Pizza by the Harbour first opened. Today mobile technology allows drivers to simply rely on their smartphones to find destinations, and the internet is now a tool for everything from ordering pizzas to advertising them. The last 12 months have included some of the biggest changes at Pizza by the Harbour. 20 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2020 / atNoblesville.com
While Pizza by the Harbour’s business model, focused on pickup and delivery, has remained unchanged by the coronavirus pandemic, the restaurant has stepped up its safety procedures to adapt to requirements and concerns. Contactless delivery and pickup are now available. Colson is confident about Pizza by the Harbour’s future. The business has survived longer than many similar eateries, and has already outlasted one recession. The staff is working on ways to commemorate the restaurant’s 18th anniversary that are in line with coronavirus safety concerns. “Statistically, we shouldn’t be here,” Colson says. “Most small businesses don’t make it, and you never know what’s around the corner. But I always want to be the best pizza that people have ever had - the best taste, the best flavoring. I want it to be that way every time.” Pizza by the Harbour is located at 20813 Hague Road in Noblesville. For the latest information, visit pizzabytheharbour.com. Sophie Brisco, a recent Noblesville High School graduate, was one of the winners at the 27th Annual Hamilton County Youth Service Awards. “I was not an overall winner, but I was the winner for Noblesville High School, and won $300,” Brisco says. The awards ceremony took place virtually on Wednesday, May 13, due to the coronavirus outbreak situation. “The selection committee read all of the winners’ answers to the questions the students were asked,” Brisco says. “The ceremony was prerecorded. All of the students participating in the youth awards program were prerecorded too. A lot of this happened before the schools were closed, due to COVID-19.” Brisco said the ceremony was posted to Hamilton County’s Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram web pages. “I won the award for being involved in many school and community activities,” she says. “Not only have I participated in many Noblesville High School sports, including soccer, track, basketball, tennis and golf, but I am also a volunteer at White River Christian Church’s food pantry, mission trips and student exchange programs. These activities allowed me to keep busy through high school and stay away from drugs and alcohol.” Brisco says her favorite sport throughout the past 12 years was soccer.
“I really enjoyed the sport,” she says. “I loved it.” Brisco says the ceremony was sponsored by the Hamilton County commissioners, the Hamilton County Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs, and each of the seven high schools in Hamilton County, as part of their ongoing efforts to recognize outstanding youth service in the local community. “All of the school winners were picked by their school’s counseling department,” Brisco says. Brisco thoroughly enjoyed all of the other 22 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2020 / atNoblesville.com
school activities she participated in. “I was also a part of the National Honor Society, Key Club and Riley Dance Marathon committee,” she says. “The Riley committee was a lot of fun, and I was part of Riley Relations, where you get kids to participate in the Dance Marathon. It was fun getting involved with such a great program.” Brisco adds that the Dance Marathon was ultimately cancelled because of coronavirus concerns. “The marathon was all planned for late
March,” Brisco says. “It was too bad because a lot of planning went into it.” Brisco is excited about her future. “My college plans include attending Purdue University to study nursing,” she says. “That’s a career I am really interested in. If I play any sports at Purdue, they will be intramural sports.” Wherever Brisco goes, she will take her love of Noblesville with her. The city has meant a lot to her throughout her younger years and through high school. “I love the Noblesville community,” she says. “Throughout the last couple years, we have been through a lot together, and I think it is amazing how everyone comes together and supports one another during these difficult times.”

He then drove his son to the Atlanta airport so he could ensure his package made it on a FedEx plane to arrive in Indy the next day. “That’s a small ounce of the support my parents have given me through the years,” Mock adds. Reviewing resumes and highlight tapes, the Colts narrowed the field down to 58 people, then from there cut it to 12. They flew in their top five to perform a two-minute skit and impromptu session, followed by an interview. The next day, they offered him the position. He’s now working on his second children’s book about Blue, an anti-bullying story scheduled to be released in 2021. Over the past 14 years, Mock has earned a number of accomplishments, including winning the NFL Mascot of the Year in 2016 and 2019. In addition, Blue was scheduled to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in June of this year. Nevertheless, Mock maintains that it’s not these accolades that mean the most to him. In fact, he recalls how years ago, he was always chasing a thrill that seemed to elude him.
Mock still recalls running through the tunnel of Lucas Oil Stadium and seeing a mom, dad and twins and wondering which of the kids was Karen. He then learned Karen was the mom. “Her one wish was to create the perfect day for her family,” says Mock, who spent two hours dancing and throwing the football with the family. “When I waved goodbye, I had the most amazing feeling wash over me, and that feeling stayed with me for weeks after.”

Nexxt Spine President Andy Elsbury & new COO James Abraham
Writer / Jennifer Brugh Photographer / Eli Beaverson
In May, Noblesville-base Nexxt Spine, LLC announced the hiring of James Abraham as the company’s new chief operating officer. This position is new to the company, and the hiring came not long after Nexxt Spine received several 510(k) product clearances from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. “[Abraham is] bringing a lot of knowledge and experience to the company,” Marketing Director Lindsey Bockhorst says. “We’re excited about bringing the company to the next level under his leadership.” Bockhorst says Abraham understands the culture and the history behind Nexxt Spine, but his vision and knowledge of the spine industry is what led the company to bring him on board.
Abraham has 30 years of experience in the medical device industry, with a majority of those years spent in the spine sector. Prior to his new role, Abraham sat as the managing director and vice president of NuVasive’s Australia and New Zealand regions. He’s also held various leadership roles in sales, marketing, global distribution and business development. “It’s a really good background to come into a company of this size and not recreate what a billion and a half dollars is doing, but take that background and overlap it onto the company right now,” Abraham says. “This company has been a very engineering and manufacturing driven company, and they’re experts at that. Now we’re moving into, ‘How do we set up the internal structure of the company to help with our growth and to handle our growth?’” Since 2009, Nexxt Spine has quietly been 28 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2020 / atNoblesville.com
designing and manufacturing all of its own implants and nearly all of its own instruments. Using engineers, designers, seven laser-beam 3D printers, raw materials, as well as remote sales teams and distributors, Nexxt Spine leaders have been able to build a business from the ground up while keeping the entire operation in-house. According to Bockhorst, the company’s infrastructure allows it to provide surgeons with important products within a few days if needed. “We’re able to turn things around rather quickly,” she says. “We’re able to make little design iterations for surgeons, especially with our instrumentation." The time is ripe for Nexxt Spine to move forward and grow as a company, something the entire team is excited about. According to Abraham, Nexxt Spine is coming out
of the coronavirus outbreak situation as a financially stable company with no debt, and its entire team intact, which is just part of what makes it stand out from competitors. The other aspect of Nexxt Spine that makes the company stand out is its manufacturing process. “It’s really our ability to take from raw material all the way through packaging,” Abraham says. “We take raw material and manufacture 100% of our products. We also package them so they’re ready to be sterilized and go to the field for distribution in hospitals. That really sets us apart from the other companies that are in the mid level to small level within the spine sector.” Part of Abraham’s role as the new COO includes expanding the Nexxt Spine brand
and making the community more aware of the company. Abraham says the company is actively hiring and looking for individuals to add to its remote sales and distribution team, sales management team, and manufacturing and engineering teams. All of these new hires are in response to Nexxt Spine’s international and domestic growth. On a local scale, Nexxt Spine plans to double its Noblesville facility in 2021, and expand its independent distribution team across the United States. Internationally, Nexxt Spine is currently expanding into Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the Oceania region including Australia, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. As Nexxt Spine continues to grow throughout the next year or two, Abraham says his job will be to get the word out about new products, shed light on the company brand in
the community, and help move Nexxt Spine forward in technology and innovation. Other aspects of the business that fall under Abraham’s duties as COO include increasing revenue growth, putting customer service operations and distribution workflows in place, and consulting with surgeons on new product development. With business on the rise, both Bockhorst and Abraham look forward to connecting with the community, as well as bringing on new and talented individuals who want to grow with the Nexxt Spine family. Nexxt Spine is located at 14425 Bergen Boulevard, Suite B in Noblesville. To find out more about the company and available positions, call 317-436-7801 or email info@ NexxtSpine.com, and visit nexxtspine.com.
