and I knew if I was going to be able to go to all of his events, I needed a job that wasn’t a nine-to-five. I also wanted a job where if I worked hard, I would be rewarded. In the beginning I worked 70 hours a week, but it was 70 hours of my choosing.” Fast forward to 2009. Peggy’s daughter-inlaw Jennifer Deakyne decided to pursue a career in the same industry. “I had been a stay-at-home mom for 11 years and when my youngest was in second grade I decided to jump back into the workplace, Jennifer says. “I had always found real estate interesting and had been around it a lot, married to Peggy’s son Gary. I thought it would be a perfect fit. I could be my own boss, make my own hours and still be there for my kids.” The two decided to join forces to create The Deakyne Team at F.C. Tucker.

Longevity in an ever-changing industry like real estate can be hard to find. Peggy Deakyne began her career in the real estate profession in 1978 after working in banking. “I worked in the banking industry for 14 years,” Peggy says. “I only had one child,

“It seemed like a no-brainer for us to join together as a team,” Jennifer says. They both feel that working together is easy for them, because they both stay in their lane. “In the beginning, I was around to help her with any questions she had, but she’s a smart cookie, so she didn’t have many,” Peggy says

of Jennifer. “Now we each do our own thing, but are there to help the other one out if need be. I knew she would be great at this, but I also didn’t want to push my career on her.” The Noblesville natives credit their knowledge of the local community for their success. “That’s why I love my job,” Jennifer says. “I can sell the place I love. Not only did my husband and I grow up here, but it’s where I’ve chosen to raise my children. Maybe they’ll choose to raise their kids here too.” Peggy notes that personal relationships and referrals are her most significant source of business. “We give a lot of personal attention to our clients,” Peggy says. “If they’re happy, they tell their friends. That’s what helped me be successful in this industry.” Jennifer also knows word of mouth creates big business in a booming industry. “I rarely work with clients that I don’t know or that I don’t have a personal connection with,” Jennifer says. “I rely on my relationships to build my business. To me that’s so important in any business, but especially in real estate. It is a people business, and that’s what I love about my job.”

Four years ago, Stacey McCreery organically built ROI Search Group (ROISG), a local, women-owned recruitment and executive search firm offering permanent placement, contract staffing, outplacement services, and training. She had no problem choosing a name for her company.

While that’s nothing new for ROI Search Group, McCreery emphasizes how important it is to represent the communities served. “If you have a Burmese population, for instance, you need to have representation of that population in the candidates you supply to the client,” McCreery adds.

“I wanted people to know when you do business with us, there will always be a return on your investment,” says McCreery, who started the firm after working for a decade as a hiring manager at a large academic health system. Having been in the shoes of hiring managers, she knew their struggles firsthand.

Over the past four years, the company has continued to expand their services as clients’ needs have grown. Their core services include providing a 360 solution with talent management in regards recruiting both Permanent “Recruiters are a dime a dozen,” says McCreery, President. “What Placement and Executive search makes us unique is that we’ve spent time on the other side.” (for specialized searches or VP and above), Contract Services (with When clients ask for help in locating just the right candidate, the a specialization in Revenue Cycle ROISG team is proactive in finding the best individual for each and IT, Epic & Cerner, Software position. It’s important candidates meet 100% of the requirements of the position they are being recruited.” For instance, if a company is seeking a technical or nursing candidate with ample experience, ROISG will find somebody

“That’s what our whole company is about,” McCreery says. “We’re ready to help companies with whatever they need: recruiting, training and outplacement.” In the past four years, they have recruited in 18 states, which is rather remarkable. Plus, by the close of August 2021, they had looked at a total of 41,000+ candidates. They have built this company organically from the ground up, and they are proud to be here doing this work right here in Fishers. “Where we’ve been and where we’re going is very exciting,” McCreery adds. FOR THE WIN

WOMEN IN NOBLESVILLE CONTINUES ITS POSITIVE LOCAL IMPACT Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photography Provided

They accomplish this through a variety of events and programs throughout the year, monthly, quarterly and annually. There are several events offered including Coffee and Connect, Wine and Wisdom, the WIN Book Club, and Birdies and Brews. They are planning to bring back the women’s conference in the spring of 2022.

As the old saying goes, “Success is best when it is shared.” Research shows women in particular can benefit from collaboration over competition, and when they do, women are more successful. While one successful woman alone has power, collectively they can achieve impact. This is the spirit in which Women In Noblesville (WIN) was developed. Mary Noble, director of member engagement for the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce, recognized that what was missing here was an opportunity for women to connect socially, grow personally, network, and connect while serving the community. The Chamber formed a volunteer committee of women to explore opportunities to connect women, and the group has been growing steadily each year.

Neilia Brown, president and CEO of Van Dyck Brown & Associates, co-chairs the WIN committee along with Kathy Young, vice president of commercial banking for First Merchants Bank, and both have been actively involved in growing the organization. Brown explains that there are many opportunities to be part of the organization. “If women are looking for a WIN event to

experience, I encourage them to attend our Coffee and Connect event,” Brown says. “This monthly event is a free of charge. It is hosted by Stephanie Smith at the Smith House on the second Wednesday of the month. As the event suggests, we provide coffee and pastries, and an opportunity to meet other women in an informal setting.” Even if you come alone, they will make certain that you will come away knowing at least one new friend. There are two more opportunities in 2021 - October 13 and

November 10. In addition, there are several annual events including Wine and Wisdom, held at the end of September at Spencer Farm Winery. This is an opportunity to enjoy a glass of wine and appetizers, network, and listen to a guest speaker or a panel of speakers on a variety of topics. For golf enthusiasts, they offer a golf outing known as Birdies and Brews, hosted at Purgatory Golf Club. Given the way many of us have had to

adjust social and emotional interactions, we can all use meaningful connections. At the end of the day, that is how women in Noblesville are winning - because they are achieving these goals. Ultimately, that is also how the WIN members are making an impact personally, in the community and in business. For more information about joining WIN, to volunteer, or for information about future events, go to noblesvillechamber.com.

arlier this year, in the midst of a global pandemic, Dr. Torie Richardson purchased Kluth Family Dental. Though such a daunting challenge might scare some people off, that’s not Richardson’s personality. Young and formidable, she embraces new possibilities and relishes the chance to work in a field that can profoundly impact people’s lives.

“I care deeply about dentistry. If a person has never experienced the unfortunate circumstance of a chipped or broken front tooth then it can be more difficult to envision the benefits of what we are able to do for them, and being able to help someone through that is so meaningful,” Richardson says. “It sounds corny, but it becomes about more than ‘fixing a tooth’ because when someone is self-conscious

about their smile, that person simply avoids smiling and making eye contact with others. In as little as an hour-long visit with us, that same person can exit our office beaming, smiling and ready to engage with the world.” Though Richardson is new to owning this practice, she is not new to Noblesville. She first started working at Kluth Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in 2018 after

Michael Kluth’s wife Joni, also a dentist, retired. Right from the start, Richardson witnessed what made the practice and community so special. She particularly liked working in a family practice that provided comprehensive care for patients of all ages. “What separates us from other practices is that we serve the whole family and treat patients like our own family. We want to

to date on advancements in the field of dentistry. One of the things people don’t realize is how many people suffer with dental anxiety.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t have a patient tell me, ‘I’d rather be any place than here,’ or ‘I hate coming to the dentist,’” Richardson says. She knows that just one bad experience She, herself, is family-oriented and has had can prompt a negative impression on family values instilled in her from a young age as someone who grew up surrounded by someone’s view of dentistry. Some people lots of family, which she thinks contributes become fearful at the thought of having to to her style of practice. that aren’t taught in dental school. “It’s crucial that you learn all of this when you’re starting out, because the business side of things is a whole other ballgame,” says Richardson, who is grateful for the way the 10-person team has rallied around her during the transition process. “I couldn’t have asked for a better team. All the staff who were there with Dr. Mike and Dr. Joni I still employ now. They have been supportive of me, which I so appreciate because it’s hard acclimating from a dentist who has been in practice 20-plus years to a doctor who is new to the practice. There is a learning curve.” How did she get into dentistry? “I was exposed to it though my mom who was a hygienist for 30 years. At first I thought I wanted to be an orthodontist - I had to bend some wire and then I was out,” she says with a chuckle. “I wanted to pursue a career in which I could achieve a healthy work-life balance. That’s why my end goal was to one day own my own practice, so that I could set my own hours and therefore achieve that balance. Richardson, 30, was proud to graduate from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in the first class that consisted of more women than men. “I think it’s a turning point in our society that women are undertaking more important, higher level leadership roles in companies,” Richardson says. “Our society is seeing the value of women in entrepreneurial positions and especially in the area of healthcare. Dentistry is a great industry to work in as a female leader due to the nature of the work—helping people and families—while also balance work and life.” In her free time, Richardson likes to try out different restaurants and breweries. She enjoys IPA beers and Italian cuisine. She’s working on her golf game, and also likes going to the Indianapolis Art Center for their wheel-throwing pottery classes. “I’m by no means any good, but it’s fun,” she says. 14 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com

As a business owner, Richardson is committed to giving back to the community in any way possible. For instance, in the past, she and Kluth have collected book bags for kids and school supplies for teachers. Around the holidays, they also adopt a family in need.

“ I THINK IT’S A TURNING POINT IN OUR SOCIETY THAT WOMEN ARE UNDERTAKING MORE IMPORTANT, HIGHER LEVEL LEADERSHIP ROLES IN COMPANIES.” —TORIE RICHARDSON

“Mike and Joni are really involved with the church as well,” Richardson says. “We just like to help out with anything that directly helps the community.” Richardson is eager to meet you and assist you with your dental needs. Come by and see her so you, too, can become part of the family! Kluth-Richardson Family & Cosmetic Dentistry is located at 16000 Prosperity Drive, Suite 400 in Noblesville. ROSIE’S STORY

Rosie’s success may be Debbi and Michael’s commitment to the communities they serve.

Back in 2009, Debbi Bourgerie, a stay-athome Mom of three, had a vision of starting her own business. After spending all her time and love being a mom for 18 years, she knew her three girls were getting older, and it would be a good time for a new venture. Debbi, with the help of her husband Michael, started looking at potential locations for a local breakfast restaurant she had dreamed up, that she wanted to name Rosie’s Place, in honor of her grandmother. Debbi comes from a family of restaurateurs. Her father has owned and operated restaurants in St. Louis for more than 45 years. Debbi grew up knowing two things: how to cook delicious homemade food and how to treat people well. Rosie’s opened its doors on Oct. 1, 2010, with a 10-item breakfast menu, coffee from her father’s coffee vendor in St. Louis and a small selection of fresh-made baked goods, including gooey butter cake (not yet a

“Paranormal X Road” Co-Hosts Kitsie Duncan and KJ McGlinn

EXPLORING THE UNEXPLAINED NEW SHOW TACKLES LOCAL STORIES OF THE PARANORMAL

OCTOBER 2021

Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

Losing a loved one is an unfortunate part of life. Some people claim to feel their loved ones communicating with them even after they’ve died. A new, all-female show called “Paranormal X Road” aims to help bring peace to alleged paranormal experiences. Kitsie Duncan and KJ McGlinn co-host “Paranormal X Road.” Duncan is an author, writer, producer, director and paranormal researcher. McGlinn is a local radio personality who uses her voice to help the local community. Tiffany Rice, a spirit medium, rounds out the cast. “In the first episode, I had some things happening in my home,” McGlinn says. “I was pretty sure it was my grandmother coming through. I don’t want to give too much away, but it ended up being way more than just my grandmother communicating with me.” Being an all-female show was essential to both women. “First and foremost - girl power,” Duncan says. “I believe females, in general, are a little more empathetic. I feel like the female energy helps the spirits communicate. Paranormal shows are all over television. I feel like it’s time for an all-female team. OCTOBER 2021

We’ve gone into homes of people we don’t know and received messages that we don’t necessarily understand, but it makes complete sense to the homeowner. That’s been pretty cool. We understand how meaningful it is to them.” McGlinn, an Indianapolis resident, felt compelled to put the normal in the paranormal, as she says. “When I moved to Indy, it was really a lastditch effort,” McGlinn says. “To be here 20plus years later in a community that I love, seeing them embrace this new show, is just amazing. I feel like the community trusts in me, and that was important for this show.” The duo funded the show through a Kickstarter campaign, meeting their goal in just three days. “The beauty about Kickstarter is the person who gave $5 has the same effect as the person who donated $500,” McGlinn says. “It’s all or nothing, which is terrifying. If you don’t hit your goal, you get nothing.” Duncan’s vision for the show is to help as many people as she can and provide a sense of comfort. “I got into this because I was missing my dad,” Duncan says. “Bringing these people peace has been magical. I want to help

FIRST AND FOREMOST - GIRL POWER. people all over the world.” Duncan and McGlinn are hopeful for a second season, to bring even more paranormal stories. “Right now we’re just enjoying the show airing,” Duncan says. “We’re really hopeful we can create a second season with an even bigger budget so we can help even more people.” While Season 1 is almost done filming, KJ & Kitsie continue to be available to assist homeowners experiencing the paranormal or just hoping to make a connection with a loved one who’s passed. A contact form is available through their website. The show airs locally on WNDY-TV 23 on Saturdays at midnight, and on YouTube. For more information, visit paranormalcrossroad.com.

EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE STACY ATKINSON IS DIGGING IN AS CHANCELLOR AT IVY TECH HAMILTON COUNTY Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided

Chancellor Dr. Stacy Atkinson is enthusiastic about overseeing Ivy Tech Community College Hamilton County’s transition from a site to a campus. When it was time to leave, the couple considered moving to New York, but Atkinson’s parents decided to move to Puerto Rico. It also offers a chance to amass general credit hours for courses in mathematics, science, history and English. “For the high school graduate who really doesn’t know what they want to do, the price point for gaining general education credits here is so much better than being on campus,” Atkinson explains. “Then, the student can transfer to a state school as a junior. We also serve the nontraditional student such as a 30-yearold going back to school, a retiree, or the employed person who wants the next credential to move up or transition to another job.”

Atkinson has several priorities. Her biggest interest is providing credentials for health-care programs. A partnership with Riverview, Community or IU Health North is in the preliminary stages. She is in the midst of figuring out what type of credentials are needed for other jobs that are hiring, and what is in demand. “We are small but mighty - 35 employees strong, and we are in the first phase of figuring out what’s in demand and needed in the community,” Atkinson says. “Transitioning from a building site to a campus requires much thought. We will keep working to have the answers.” Ivy Tech Hamilton County is located at 300 North 17th Street in Noblesville. For more info, call 317-921-4300 or visit ivytech.edu/hamilton-county.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT PET WANTS IMPROVES PETS’ HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

Colleen Markwood worked in corporate America for 25 years, first in the television industry, then as a sales manager. In January of 2021, she was ready to switch gears and do something that made a difference in her community. When she stumbled upon Pet Wants, a business devoted to improving the nutrition, health, vitality and well-being of pets, something resonated. “I love to offer people suggestions and solutions,” says Markwood, who in a matter of four days decided to quit her job, buy into the franchise and adopt a puppy. “If we’re talking about dogs, even better.” Pet Wants, which originated in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has been around for 10 years, is not set up as a distribution model per se. The company is focused on cooking in small batches on low temperatures. Many big brands create food in large quantities, then send it to hubs to be distributed to stores. This means that by the time you grab a bag of food off a shelf, it’s likely eight to 12 months old. “The whole concept behind Pet Wants is to deliver the freshest kibble we can,” Markwood says. While feeding your pooch old food isn’t

going to harm them, it’s not doing much good either, as food loses nutritional value over time. At Pet Wants the food, which is sold by the pound, is made in the U.S. eight times per year, then shipped directly to the franchise owners. Markwood places her orders based on her customers’ needs. Clients can choose to get a delivery every two, four, six, eight, 10 or 12 weeks. Markwood operates her business as a mobile concept, rather than renting a brick-and-mortar store. She’s accessible via email, and can be found each week with her daughter Maggie, a veterinary technician, at the Noblesville and Westfield farmers markets. The mother-daughter duo also takes part in other fun events. For example, Pet Wants sponsors the Clay Terrace Dog Park, and every third Friday of the month they participate in Pups and Pints from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., where community members and their canines are invited to “Yappy Hour.” There are beer vendors on site, and Markwood sells treats and chews. Folks can shop and sip beer while their pups run around and socialize. Markwood is open to thinking outside the box when it comes to hosting events. For OCTOBER 2021

instance, last summer a friend told her that she wanted to throw a small party for her human friends and their canines. She asked Markwood to bring some doggie cakes and other treats. “Imagine a Pampered Chef party with dogs,” Markwood says. Every item Markwood sells is organic, of top quality, and made from a single-sourced ingredient. She also has a spa line for dogs with mosquito, flea and tick spray, anti-itch skin spray, healing salve, calming balm, and paw wax. She offers free delivery, free samples and free consultation. “If you have dogs who pick at their food, it’s because they don’t like it,” says Markwood, whose customers attest that their pooches have a palate for nutritional cuisine. “I just got a text from someone who said, ‘My dog won’t eat his old food now. He knows the difference,’” adds Markwood, who has heard from countless customers about how good nutrition has changed their pet’s life. For instance, a woman approached Markwood at a farmers market to say that her dog had a bunch of allergies and was inflamed, scratching and itching incessantly. After switching to the Pet Wants food,

however, her issues cleared right up. Markwood is thrilled with the feedback. Markwood has also helped pets with anxiety and sensitive stomachs. “We all love and care about our pets,” she says. “We want to give them the best life we “People tell me all the time, ‘I wish I’d found can.” you years ago,’” Markwood says. For more information about Pet Wants, Markwood herself wishes she had learned call 317-678-7496, email cmarkwood@ of Pet Wants sooner, so that she could have petwants.com, or visit petwants.com/ been more educated about how to feed her noblesville. beloved 120-pound chocolate lab Jeffrey, who died at age 11. “I fed him Milk Bones because I didn’t realize all the stuff that goes into a Milk Bone that he shouldn’t eat,” Markwood says.

He used to chase after rabbits, and as a result tore one ACL, then the other, and finally his Achilles tendon. After the third injury, he couldn’t walk or get up. When he stopped eating, the family had to put him down. Markwood can’t help but wonder if Jeffrey’s joints would have responded differently had she put more omegas in his diet. “What if I had introduced salmon, white fish or duck?” she wonders. “What if I’d given him beef trachea treats full of chondroitin and glucosamine?” With Gus, a 10-month-old yellow Lab, she’s doing things differently, feeding him lamb, trachea and fish eyes.

Top-selling items include beef tracheas, chicken feet and beef cheek chews (which look like rawhide but are highly digestible). Also popular are hickorysmoked antlers, water buffalo horns and Himalayan yaky charms. She also sells doggie ice cream, supplements, cat food and catnip.

“I’m so glad I found you,” the customer wrote. “These are the only thing that help my dog with anxiety, especially during fireworks.”

SERVICE MINDED ALAINA SHONKWILER IS DEDICATED TO HER CITY

Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

Many people want to make their community a better place to live, but Noblesville resident Alaina Shonkwiler has made it her career. Shonkwiler serves as the board president of Hamilton County Leadership Academy (HCLA). The organization’s mission is to educate and inspire leaders to create a positive impact in the community. “HCLA has served as my connection to incredible collaborations that happen between local government, businesses and nonprofits to strengthen our community,” Shonkwiler says. “Through HCLA, I feel I’m a part of a talented network of HCLA alumni and stakeholders, all of whom are passionate about their career and their community.”

Shonkwiler is a volunteer member of the HCLA board, and is the southwest district director for Indiana’s 5th congressional district under Congresswoman Victoria Spartz.

“I work to support the congresswoman’s presence in the district as she represents the district in Washington, D.C,” Shonkwiler says. “The southwest portion of the district includes Boone County, Hamilton County and Marion County.”

That path back to Hamilton County led to several roles in local organizations.

Shonkwiler attributes her love of local politics to her favorite high school teacher.

“I can invest in the community through my previous roles at the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce, City of Noblesville Economic Development department, Noblesville Workforce Development, and serving the 5th district as southwest district director for Congresswoman Spartz,” she says.

“I blame Bruce Hitchcock, my favorite high school teacher, for my interest in government and politics, and understanding Shonkwiler and her family have strong ties to Noblesville. their role in our day-to-day lives,” Shonkwiler says. “He took summer trips “My husband Jason serves with the with parents and students to Washington, OCTOBER 2021

Our daughter Hannah is in eighth grade at Noblesville West Middle School, and our son Kyle is in fifth grade at Hinkle Creek Elementary. Both of our parents live in Noblesville and can be seen cheering the kids at their various sporting events.” In her spare time, Shonkwiler still finds ways to immerse herself in Hamilton County. “I spend my evenings and weekends at Grinder football games and Noblesville West Middle School volleyball games, cheering on my kids and their teammates,” Shonkwiler says. “Tuesday mornings you can find me at Ginger’s Cafe, learning from guest speakers as a member of the Noblesville Kiwanis Sunrisers. I also support our Behind the Badge and Noblesville Fraternal Order of Police as a volunteer for Shop with a Cop. I’m a member of the board for Noblesville Sister Cities and the Noblesville High School Alumni Association.” She believes kindness is a central value to residents of Noblesville. “I’ve seen grace and generosity from all of our neighbors, and I am appreciative for the chance to raise my kids in Hamilton County,” Shonkwiler says. Story & Photos Provided by Painting with a Twist

After the stress of a global pandemic, everyone could use a night out with friends, a loved one, or just a night away from the house, add a glass of wine, beer or soda, music, throw in paint and a canvas, and you have Painting with a Twist. Painting with a Twist, located in Carmel, is America’s original and largest paint n’ sip franchise brand. “We’re an instructor-led party with paint, canvas or wood board and a beverage,” says Kerry Sawyer, owner of the Carmel location. “We have studio painting classes that are open to the public that includes family classes, blacklight, trivia nights, ladies and date nights, as well as offering private parties, team-building events, virtual classes, take-home kits, and off-site events. Guests, after reserving online, come in, have a glass

“Our private parties are a great way to celebrate birthdays, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, anniversaries, company parties or team-building events,” Sawyer says. “They get to choose their painting from our art gallery of more than 11,000 paintings. Then our instructor guides them step-by-step through the entire process.”

“Once a month, my studio hosts a painting event that raises funds for local nonprofit organizations,” Sawyer says. “It’s a fun and creative way to give back and support the causes I love.”

Sawyer knows from experience that teambuilding events are a great way to improve company culture and engage with them outside of work. Prior to purchasing Painting with a Twist, Sawyer was one of the studio’s best clients. Sawyer owned 45 haircut locations and would host her Team Appreciation Events at the studio. She not only brought her team to the studio, but her children, family, cheer moms and friends. “Every Time I was at Painting with a Twist, it was always an amazing experience,” she says. “My guests and I always had a blast painting and socializing. We left happy and with a painting that we created.” After unforeseen life-changing events, Sawyer sold her haircut locations and wanted to pursue something that makes a difference in people’s lives, something she could make profitable but also make her soul happy. She found another surprising benefit of ownership, Painting with a Purpose.

Painting with a Twist has donated more than $5M to nonprofit organizations across the nation. Sawyer is committed to giving back to the local community, one painting at a time. “Painting builds self-esteem and is very therapeutic,” Sawyer adds. “Painting with a Twist produces a relaxing, open environment where painters feel safe to explore their own creativity. We truly are helping people. “Customers come into my studio, and they literally transform in the two hours they’re here. They come in unsure, not thinking they can create the artwork chosen and they leave ecstatic, relaxed and revived. We’re creating a carefree escape for people to reconnect, de-stress, rejuvenate and rekindle spirits, at the same time I’m allowing artists that I employ to pursue their passion.” They also offer Twist at Home kits. “With COVID, we wanted to continue

to extend that sense of peace to our community by offering them the opportunity to do that from home,” Sawyer says. ‘Our kits allow our customers to paint from the safety of their own home. Whether you choose to have a moment to yourself, plan a date night, or make it into a familyfun event, Twist at Home kits are a great way to shift into that imaginative mode where worries seem to fade. Painting with a Twist also offers many different outlets for people to escape from the daily grind. “You can find all of our information online at paintingwithatwist.com/carmel,” Sawyer says. “It’s time to plan something fun, therapeutic and out of the ordinary. THE PATCHED PUMPKIN

LOCAL RESIDENT GROWS AND SELLS UNIQUE PUMPKIN VARIETIES

Writer / Megan Arszman Photography Provided

For Ashley Thomas, pumpkins and fall mean more than just the release of pumpkin-spice products. It’s her favorite time of year to spend outside, and the highlight of her harvested bounty. “I’ve always been obsessed with Halloween and fall,” Thomas says. “I had some time on my hands last summer, so I asked my parents if I could borrow a small chunk of land where they live to plant my own pumpkins.”

The experiment wound up being a success, with Thomas planting, harvesting and selling her own pumpkins to family and friends. This summer she doubled her efforts, not only in the amount of pumpkins planted, but also the variety of pumpkins. The 2021 harvest from The Patched Pumpkin includes gourds, pumpkins with warts, pink pumpkins, and more pumpkins of different colors. “I just love doing it,” Thomas says. “If I’m lucky enough to make a little money as well, that’s just a bonus.” The Patched Pumpkin will be selling boutique pumpkins

and gourds at her family farm in the western part of Boone County, from her home in Fishers, and at Harbor Trees Golf and Beach Club in Noblesville, where she is a fulltime employee. Last year saw Thomas mostly selling from her front yard on the weekends. She also provided the opportunity to purchase her pumpkins with the honor system via Venmo while she was away at work. “The honor system worked a lot better than I thought,” she says. “I’ll always have the traditional orange pumpkins that everyone likes to use for carving, but I always want to offer the types of pumpkins you can’t just find at the local convenience store.” Thomas opted to find decor pumpkins, such as flat pumpkins that can be stacked on front porches, as well as textured pumpkins with warts, and pumpkins that come in out-of-the-norm colors like blue and pink. Pumpkins of all sizes and shapes from The Patched Pumpkin allow buyers to decorate the inside and outside of

their homes, which is what Thomas loves to see. “If you look at Pinterest or Instagram, that’s what everyone is doing, so I wanted to offer that variety,” she says. Thomas’ favorite variety selling this year is called the Porcelain Doll variety, which comes in a peach color with a rounded shape. “It’s definitely unique, so you won’t see it everywhere, so I think people will really like that,” she says. As part of The Patched Pumpkin’s offerings, fans can purchase ears of Indian corn to be used for autumn decor, and enjoy a jar or two of fresh homemade blackberry jelly, canned with love by Thomas and her family. Lauren Patrick, a senior at Noblesville High School (NHS), loves being involved in many school and community activities. “I’m the editor in chief of Noblesville High School’s student newspaper, the Mill Stream,” Patrick says. “Our staff is currently made up of about 25 sophomores, juniors and seniors, but I was lucky enough to become a staff writer halfway through my freshman year. As far as I know, I was the first and only freshman ever on staff, and am currently the longest-standing staff member as I start my fourth year as a part of the publication. Prior to becoming editor in chief, I held the position of lifestyles and opinions editor in my sophomore year, and I was a co-managing editor in my junior year. I’m also a nine-time writing award winner, on statewide, national and international levels, for my work on the paper.” Patrick notes that she has also been a part of the NHS student government since she was a freshman.

Dr. Kim Dunbar provides residents of Noblesville with quality dental care in a relaxed environment. She opened Dunbar Dentistry in Noblesville in 1999 after operating her practice for 10 years in downtown Indianapolis.

Dunbar has lived in Noblesville most of her life.

“I graduated from IU School of Dentistry in

graduating high school. Funny enough, I had my senior pictures taken in the building where my practice is now. It was a photography studio.” Dunbar is looking to the future and possible retirement. She wants to ensure that her patients are aware of her plans, which include hiring her replacement. “I’m a few years away from retirement,”

Dunbar says. “I do have a goal in sight. In 2020 I brought on Dr. Elisheva Tinsley for continuity. A lot of people sell practices and don’t communicate that they’re ready to sell. I’ve been taking care of people for 30 years, and I was not about to just have a strange face come in.” Tinsley grew up in Vincennes, IN and graduated from the IU School of Dentistry in 2015. She took over the Friday schedule and added Mondays, allowing the practice to be open for an additional day each week. “We now have patients that float back and forth between us, which is common in multi doctor care facilities,” Dunbar says. “It is with the understanding that she will be the one that continues the care after I retire.” Tinsley is happy to be working in the town where her husband grew up, and closer to her home in Fishers.

“It’s been great working here,” Tinsley says. “The staff has the ability to work cohesively as a dental unit. There isn’t a divide in departments. Everyone is so willing to help each other out and willing to go the extra mile. Plus, everyone is very family based.” The all-female staff works well together to achieve Dunbar’s vision.

“I have been in a practice where it wasn’t all female, and the dynamics were very different,” Dunbar says. “Everyone is very mature, and there is no issue with egos. One thing that makes us different is my faith and how I share that with my staff. It’s God first, family and then work.” With the addition of Tinsley came some new services for Dunbar Dentistry. “I’m certified to offer oral sedation dentistry,” Tinsley says. “I just finished my certification for placing dental implants as well.” Services include preventative care, restorative care, periodontal treatment, cosmetic procedures, tooth replacement, orthodontics, oral surgery and sedation surgery. THE THIN LINE SPOTLIGHT

NOBLESVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT 30X30 INITIATIVE Writer / Jamie Hergott Photography Provided

Shannon Trump is proud to be among the last of the first, when it comes to women in law enforcement. Nearly 20 years into her own law enforcement journey, Trump is the deputy chief of professional standards at the City of Noblesville Police Department, as well as the newly elected president of the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives (NAWLEE). While these are major accomplishments, Trump and her agency want to see more recruitment of female officers to better serve their communities.

says. “Our community is also 50% female, so to have a true representation, our agency should be 50% female. More diversity makes us all better.” Trump is among 12% of women in law enforcement nationwide, and the higher the ranks get, the lower the number of females become. In fact, only 3% of high-ranking officers are women. The initiative was born out of the lack of policies protecting women, as well as an uninviting culture in law enforcement. For example, many agencies don’t have a maternity policy protecting women who want to start a family. The Noblesville agency just added a maternity policy a year and a half ago.

To accomplish this, her department signed NAWLEE’s 30x30 Initiative in June. The goal of this initiative is to increase the representation of women in police recruit “I always knew our pregnant officers would classes, specifically by 30% by the year 2030. be treated right, but what if I’m not here?” Trump says. “We need to be looking at our “Many initiatives revolve around race and policies and make a concerted effort to ethnicity, and we still want that,” Trump

make sure our policies are inclusive.” The initiative is a way for agencies to be held accountable in their efforts to draw in and make room for those who haven’t typically felt welcome at the table, or who have been intimidated by the process and career of law enforcement. “We want women to know we want you to be here,” Trump says. “Unfortunately, a lot of this has been our own fault for not wanting to change, and for perpetuating myths about this kind of work. It’s on us to change the culture.” Trump says women bring many qualities to law enforcement that are important and necessary. Research shows women use less force in general, and less excessive force. They are named in fewer complaints in lawsuits. “We need so many types of people,” Trump

38 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com

says. “It’s up to us to show that. We aren’t always speeding down alleyways, busting down doors and dragging people out. We do that, but we also need women who excel at communication, technology and investigative skills.” Another major aspect of the initiative is research. Trump has been in her position for a year and a half, and has spent time asking the community what types of barriers keep women from pursuing careers in law enforcement. “When you start a career like this, there are a lot of milestones,” Trump says. “First female field training officers, first to attend the national academy, etcetera. I’ve never had a female mentor, never had a female trainer, never had a female sergeant. The female officers coming behind me can’t say that. If you don’t see it, you don’t know you can be it. That’s so important.” The department is the first agency in Hamilton County to sign the initiative, followed by the Carmel Police Department. She’s extremely proud to be a part of the 30x30 Initiative, and is excited for the future. “There’s a difference between saying we are trying to recruit, and then having something that publicly says that this is what we are doing,” Trump says. “We are saying we can do better, and we will do better. It makes us all better on a professional level, on a community level and across the nation.”

IN THEIR OWN WORDS: OFFICERS OF THE NOBLESVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT TIFFANY BLEDSOE Patrol Officer, Night Shift “My favorite part of the job is honestly being able to interact with the community that I serve. As an officer, we typically come into contact with people during their worst moments or when we initiate traffic stops, both of which can be stressful situations. Every day I strive to show the community

that even though we as officers seem intimidating in our uniforms, underneath it all we are still humans. We are ordinary people that have chosen a job we love, with the hope to help those in need. Whenever I conduct a traffic stop, I have one rule. I leave the driver with a positive experience that either has them laughing or pulling away with a smile on their face. Life is stressful enough as it is, especially with this pandemic. There is no need to make an interaction with an officer another stressor.”

HAYLEY LUTZ Patrol Officer 2nd Class, Patrol Division

“I chose to go into law enforcement because I wanted a job where I could give back to the community my entire family grew up in. I wanted a job where I could make a difference in people’s lives, as well as have a career in a field the younger generation looks up to. My favorite part of the job is the positive impact we can leave on someone’s life. Being able to give someone the resources to help them completely turn their life around when they are at their lowest can be so rewarding. I feel we are making positive impacts in the community by being role models to the younger generation.”

TownePost.com / OCTOBER 2021 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 39

APRIL KLINE Sergeant, Patrol Division/Nights A “As crazy as it may sound, after 11 years on the job, I still think this is the best career in the world. One of my favorite parts of this job is that every single day is different. You never know what each day will bring, but each day brings new opportunities and hope to interact with the community in a way that can have a lasting and positive impact on someone’s life. We often encounter people on some of the worst days of their lives. Even in those moments, we can still

make a difference, which is what this job is all about.”

MARLEY PAGEL 1st Patrol Officer, Patrol Division “I knew when I was little I wanted to be in some form of law enforcement. When I was around 5 years old, I stole a package of Hubba Bubba roll-up tape gum. When I got to the car, my mom found it, called for a police officer, and made me talk to the officer about my actions. After she asked me

if I had learned my lesson I told her, ‘I want to be a cop too.’ I grew up in Noblesville from the time I was 11 to now. One of my favorite impacts is when I see a little girl get super excited that there is a girl police officer, or when I get asked by teenagers, trying to figure out what they want to do in life, what it takes to be a police officer and what can they do to prepare for it. I want young women to know and see that you can be female, have a family and kids, and still work the job of your dreams.”

THE BENCHMARK STUDIO THRIVES ON TEAMWORK “When I decided to open my business, I wanted to differentiate my salon from other booth rental salons,” she says. “I love the social aspect of our open concept salon. At The Benchmark Studio, although we run our separate independent businesses, we still work as a team.” Bench loves the way everyone at the salon looks out for each other.

Ashley Bench, stylist and owner of of The Benchmark Studio, 930 Logan Street, Noblesville, officially opened her salons’ doors in the spring of 2020 with the vision of creating a chic, welcoming environment for clients and ample synergistic business opportunities for other like-minded stylists and beauty professionals. She set out to build a salon strikingly different from similar businesses and is confident she is fulfilling that goal. “I bought the building in February, 2020, did a complete renovation through the pandemic, and opened my salon in May of 2020,” Bench says. “We are a full service, open concept, booth-rental salon, and we also have private suites available for rent.” Bench, who is also a stylist, set out to make her salon stand out from other similar businesses. She believes she met her goal.

“We love to share our new techniques and ideas with one another. ,” Bench says. “Our continuing education is important to us, so we take different classes together. I believe that supporting one another creates a strong thriving business.” Bench noted that The Benchmark Studio offers haircuts, color, extensions, and bridal services. “We are the only salon in Noblesville that carries the luxury Oribe hair care products,” she says. “Our stylists and our clients can’t get enough of them. We’ve had an incredible amount of positive feedback from all of our clients. They feel pampered and relaxed as soon as they step into our luxurious salon.” The Benchmark Studio’s spa services include facial waxing, lash extensions, Swedish massage, deep tissue massages, cupping, migraine treatment, and Reiki, a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.

INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES Bench says she loves helping the entrepreneurial business owners who rent her booths.

“There’s nothing that gives me more joy in my business than walking my renters through the process of becoming independent, and watching their individual businesses grow,” Bench says. Bench added that she knows just how tough it can be to start a business. “A lot of my renters are first time business owners, and the idea of going out on your own can be extremely intimidating,” Bench says. “My job is to encourage them, and help them realize how successful they can be when they make their own schedule, set their own prices, and become their own bosses.” Bench noted that she still has open space for interested, driven people to join the salon’s team. “We still have a few salon chairs, and a couple of suites available for rent,” Bench says. “We would love to add some more people/ professionals to our team.” Bench says she loves being a part of downtown Noblesville. “Even though Noblesville is growing and changing rapidly, the downtown area still has a small town feel,” Bench says. “I’m absolutely thrilled to be a part of this thriving tight-knit community. There has been an incredible amount of love and support flowing in since I opened my doors. I couldn’t be more grateful.” To make an appointment at The Benchmark Studio, 930 Logan Street, Noblesville, call (317) 316-3000; (812) 797-9589; or e-mail them at info@thebenchmarkstudio.com.

Three reasons why a mammogram is an important part of your preventive health

1

A mammogram can save your life. Early detection of breast cancer can increase a woman’s five-year survival rate to 97%.

2

It doesn’t take much time. Mammograms are a quick procedure, only taking about 20 minutes.

3

Your risk of developing breast cancer increases as you age. The older you get, the more you are at risk of developing breast cancer. That’s why mammograms aren’t a one-and-done test.

Mammograms are vital to your health and longevity as a woman. Indiana University Health recommends routine screening mammography to improve the likelihood of detecting breast cancer early. If you have specific questions about your level of risk for breast cancer, schedule an appointment with your primary care provider.

Schedule and complete your mammogram during the month of October and receive this pink Campfire Mug.* Schedule your mammogram today. Call 317.688.2955.

Our Safe Care Pledge Rest assured your safety is our utmost priority. At IU Health, we want to assure you that we are taking thoughtful steps to make sure our spaces remain safe for everyone. How we’re keeping you safe at each IU Health care facility:
