Federal Hill Commons Ice Plaza Opens Nov. 17 Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Ice skaters will have a great place to hit the ice again now that The Federal Hill Commons Ice Plaza in Noblesville will be open for another season of winter fun. The Ice Plaza, 175 Logan Street, Noblesville, will be open from Saturday, November 17 through Monday, January 7, 2019. Kristi Spehler, community development manager, City of Noblesville Parks & Recreation Department, says the Ice Plaza opened in the winter of 2017 as a way for the community to enjoy the new park year-
round by adding a winter outdoor activity. “It has become Noblesville’s newest holiday tradition,” Spehler says. The Ice Plaza is a temporary, portable rink with actual ice and 300 pairs of ice skates of various sizes. This season, the Ice Plaza will have admission ticket prices similar to last year’s prices. For $12, skaters can enjoy untimed skating all day. They can also come and go as they please throughout the day. Spehler noted that with the purchase of an admission ticket wristband, it allows skaters to skate, take a break, grab a bite to eat, even leave the park and return to the ice later
that day to continue their skating session. Families can make a day of it in Noblesville. After some time on the ice together, they can head to the Noblesville Square to shop or eat dinner and then take another turn on the ice before heading home. “Last year was our first year for the rink, and more than 4,000 people skated at the rink and brought their friends and families to the Ice Plaza,” Spehler says. “As with all of our second-year programs and events, we expect the number of skaters and visitors to increase this year. We had a number of repeat skaters last year with some of them

Theme Nights The Ice Plaza will hold special theme nights where skaters will receive $10 admission when they participate or dress up for the themes: •November 24: Small Business Saturday – show your small business receipt to receive $10 admission •November 30: Elf Night and Noblesville Fire Department Toy and Food Drive Opens – bring an item for the NFD drive to receive $10 admission •December 7: Public Safety Night and Food and Toy Drive Closes - bring an item for the NFD drive to receive $10 admission •December 14: Holiday Hat night - Wear a holiday hat to receive $10 admission
skating multiple times a week. We look forward to them returning this season.” The Noblesville Parks and Recreation staff has also received many questions from the community and local sponsors about the rink. “They are always excited to hear that it is returning to the park,” Spehler says. “Federal Hill Commons and the Ice Plaza bring yearround enjoyment to Noblesville and help our community stay active during months when there are fewer outdoor events and opportunities to stay active compared to the warmer months.” During the holidays, the Ice Plaza also provides a new holiday tradition for Noblesville families. “We decided to open a week earlier this year, so it could be enjoyed over Thanksgiving when families are in town visiting and looking for fun activities to do together,” Spehler says. “Federal Hill Commons was designed for an ice rink and all of the infrastructure was
in place to accommodate the rink, including its own separate power,” adds Brandon Bennett, Noblesville Parks Director. “The Market Plaza is the perfect place for the Ice Plaza and provides plenty of space for the rink, viewing area, skate rental, food trucks or any other special events that may take place around the rink.” Bennett says ice rink installation will begin the week of Nov. 12, and “we ask park visitors to be aware of the construction work and use extra caution during that time.” The Ice Plaza welcomes all ages and ice skating skills. There are also opportunities for local businesses to get involved with the Ice Plaza and reach skaters and park visitors. Businesses interested in sponsoring logo boards around the interior of the rink, hosting a theme night with an on-site booth or other opportunities are asked to contact Kristi Spehler, Community Development Manager at 317-776-6350 or kspehler@ noblesville.in.us for more information on ways to get involved.

Seventy percent of Helmer’s team members engage in Helmer Generosity Initiatives in some way. So far in 2018, the company has donated 66 units that will be distributed to hospitals and clinics in underserved areas of the world. “When selecting a donation partner, we look for a cause that fits our generosity culture,” says Matt Schafer, a tech service manager who oversees the donations. Recently, Helmer was chosen to be part of a life-saving mission in Rwanda that uses drones to transport blood to patients in remote areas. Helmer equipment stores the blood and ensures it is viable for the patient when it is delivered. Braden Cofer has a strong interest in food science and has strived to get a head start on his future career plans. Cofer truly exemplifies a perfect example of a hard-working, industrious student. “I am currently involved as an intern for Darlington Snacks,” Cofer says. “It’s a food company that specializes in making healthy, delicious cookies and crackers for schools, nursing homes and retail stores nationwide.” Cofer, a senior at Noblesville High School, has enjoyed learning more about an industry that strongly intrigues him. “I am currently shadowing Justin Miller, the Vice President of Baking at Darlington Snacks,” Cofer says. “Darlington is headquartered in Noblesville, with a manufacturing and processing plant in Joplin, Missouri.” Cofer, a hard worker, has already learned a lot that will help him down the road. “It’s a unique internship because there is a lot of hands-on experience, where I get to learn various aspects of the food industry,” Cofer says. “I get to look at how the products are made, the designing of the shapes and flavors of the products and the marketing side of
Darlington. I plan to major in Food Science at Purdue University.” Darlington Snacks, 8001 E. 196th Street, Noblesville, is a family-owned commercial bakery providing prebaked, packaged snacks to the food service and retail industries. Cofer says their snacks include Whole Grain Iced Apple and Whole Grain Iced Cinnamon Breakfast Squares, a wide range of cookies and crispies, crackers and other snacks. ©2018 Kumon North America, Inc. Cofer says that the company’s employees work hard to provide innovative, convenient, shelf-stable, baked goods of the highest quality and taste experience to the food industry. He has treasured his experience with Darlington Snacks. “I really like how I’m constantly learning new things every time I go in there,” Cofer says. “I get to learn the process involved with developing the flavors for their cookies and crackers, comparing other products to Darlington and seeing how they are alike and different from other producers and just getting to look at the different components of the food industry.” When he’s not doing school work or interning at Darlington Snacks, Cofer is busy enjoying sports. “I’m a part of the boys varsity soccer team at Noblesville High School,” Cofer says. “My only hobby is pretty much soccer because it is such a big time commitment playing five to six days a week.” Cofer adds that he loves living in Noblesville, especially with how supportive the city’s residents are to each other. “The thing I enjoy most about Noblesville is the sense of community that you feel around the city,” Cofer says.

If you’re a mother, then you’re probably all too familiar with the difficulties of balancing work life and home life while trying to obtain an ounce of that precious time that seems to get away from every busy mom: “me time.” Tailored Time is a business idea from the mind of Karen McComb, a mother of three. The idea’s intent is to simplify the lives of busy moms by checking off their to-do lists so they can enjoy doing what they want to do. McComb thought on the idea for a
while but only recently put it into motion. So far, she is happy with the positive responses she has received. “I started Tailored Time a few months ago and have had good success,” McComb says. “I feel there is a great need for this, and I look forward to helping people simplify their lives.” The purpose of Tailored Time is simple: help people gain more time to do the things they love. The execution? Slightly more complex than the idea, but McComb flourishes at what she does. The services she provides include: grocery shopping, pantry
and refrigerator restock, pet sitting, gift buying and wrapping, holiday decorating and clean-up, running errands, preparation for incoming house guests, and more. “I can offer a lot from my personal experience as a mom,” McComb says. “I understand the need. A mom is only as good as what she has to give. If a mom is tired, run down or out of shape, she doesn’t have a lot to give to her family. For a mom to be her best, she must feel her best and, unfortunately, moms often put themselves last.” McComb has a plethora of ways in mind

to help busy moms. In addition to the already-mentioned services, she can take cars for repairs, prepare meals, organize closets and clear clutter. The intention of these services? Give moms more time for themselves in order to help enhance their life at home.

According to McComb, taking tasks away from a mother’s daily routine will allow her time to exercise, spend social time with friends, work on a hobby or even take a class. “For moms who work outside of the home, I have often thought it would be nice if they could go to their child’s sports practice or game after work, and then come home to a meal already prepared,” McComb says. “Whether they have groceries delivered or they have me do their shopping, I can prepare meals so that when they come home, they can have dinner together without the fuss.”

One local club is ensuring that people with IDD feel included at a young age — The Noblesville West Middle School Best Buddies Club. The Best Buddies club is a worldwide nonprofit. According to their website, The
The perfect example is the Noblesville West Middle School chapter of Best Buddies. Abby McKean, special Olympics volleyball coach, proposed the club a few years ago. She approached two special education teachers, Zella Hendrickson and Anne Maslanka, about being co-sponsors. The
club would follow the Best Buddies format of paring an IDD student with a nonIDD student, with the hope of fostering friendship and social interaction. Hendrickson and Maslanka agreed, and the Noblesville West Middle School’s Best Buddies club was born. Zella Hendrickson notes the importance of such a club. “Students with IDD often enter the same building and walk the same hallways as their peers but are frequently left out of social activities,” she says. The Best Buddies Club serves as a social outlet for these students. The club meets the first Tuesday every month. During these meetings, pairs of buddies work together on community projects or

do fun activities like watching movies. In addition, the Best Buddies Club has a trip outside school once a month. Hendrickson says this fall the club is planning on “visiting Spencer Farms, serving dinner at White River Christian Church Community Dinner and making holiday ornaments at Kiln Creations.” Hendrikson adds that both IDD students and non-IDD students really enjoy the club. “It’s all about acceptance and inclusion,” Hendrikson says. “Everyone involved feels accepted and included. You see this happen not only in our meetings but throughout our school. For example, one of our Best Buddies members, eighth-grade student Noah Morris, is the Manager for the 8th grade NWMS Football Team. How cool is that?” The club is still pretty new, only being in its third year. However, Noblesville West’s Best Buddies club has accomplished a great deal in its three years. They have been steadily increasing membership every year and have received recognition from Best Buddies headquarters. “Last May NWMS Best Buddies was awarded Middle School Chapter of the Year,” Hendrickson says. Recently Team West had three teachers, McKean, Maslanka and Hendrickson, nominated to the 2018 Indiana Best Buddies Champion of the Year, which recognizes the community’s most active leaders. In the future, the Noblesville West’s Best Buddies Club plans on continuing their tradition of fellowship and community. Anyone who wants to get involved in the club and possibly offer sponsorships or event opportunities is encouraged to reach out to Noblesville West Middle School to do so.

PLAY ON FINCH CREEK FIELDHOUSE MULTI-SPORT YOUTH FACILITY OPENS IN NOBLESVILLE Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr
The brand new, 160,000-square-foot Finch Creek Fieldhouse on Boden Road is a much-needed addition to the City of Noblesville, according to co-founder Andy Card. After observing cities throughout the U.S. while traveling for his son’s basketball team back in 2012, Card realized that many areas across the country - Central Indiana included - were lacking fullyequipped, indoor multi-sport complexes where local, organized youth leagues, tournaments and camps could take place. Before long, Card and Mike Klipsch, co-presidents of Klipsch-Card Athletic Facilities LLC, were working toward opening a multi-sport facility in Westfield, which opened in early 2016. Now known as the Pacers Athletic Center (formerly Jonathan Byrd’s Fieldhouse), the Westfield facility was an instant success, prompting Card and Klipsch to open a second, even more diverse complex in the Noblesville and Fishers region. “Really how the Finch Creek project came about is that I saw a need for large, indoor facilities in the area where tournaments and leagues could be held under one roof,” Card says. “We started talking to folks in Noblesville not long after the Westfield facility opened in January of 2016 and spent about a year and a half working out the details and design.” The 14-month construction process for Finch Creek Fieldhouse began in the early fall of 2017, and Card says local representatives and residents jumped

on board in support of the concept immediately. “I’ve not had one negative comment or remonstration on the facility,” says Card, who officially opened the Fieldhouse to the public on October 1 and plans to host a grand opening celebration in the spring. “We’ve been welcomed by the city with open arms, not just by city officials but by
the citizens themselves,” he adds.
batting cages for baseball and softball.
There’s no shortage of amenities at the complex, including approximately 75,000 square feet of turf for baseball, softball, football, lacrosse, soccer and rugby, as well as an 8,000-square-foot mezzanine for viewing of practices and games. Visitors can also take advantage of five courts for basketball and volleyball and 11
Sound like a lot for a single facility? That’s far from all — the Fieldhouse, which spans 10 acres, also houses 15,000 square feet devoted to training for all skill levels and space for stateof-the-art sports therapy, including cryotherapy recovery. Card says the joy he sees in youth of all ages engaging in sporting activities at his complexes makes the hard work of opening such expansive facilities worthwhile. “It’s a very big challenge to build a big structure with high-quality materials and make it look cool and then still stay under budget, but for us it’s not just about opening a business,” says Card, adding that the next and third Klipsch-Card Athletic Facilities LLC project is a multi-sport complex in Pendleton, where construction will commence in November.

Plans for the Pendleton facility include tennis courts, a gymnasium, rooms for weight training and yoga and space for wellness programs and classes. Card also has plans, currently in various stages of design, for 14 additional sports facilities both in Indiana and outside the state. “With Finch Creek, we really want to do some good things for kids of all ages and skill levels,” Card adds. “It’s going to be great for the community of Noblesville, and it’s an amenity that was sorely needed in the city. We’re excited to offer a state-of-the-art facility, especially with the space where we have the wellness, training and recovery things that will be going on there. I call it the gold standard for youth sports facilities, and I haven’t seen anything like it in the U.S. before.” Finch Creek Fieldhouse is located at 16289 Boden Road in Noblesville. PURE AIR ENVIRONMENTAL (317) 760-7873 pureairenvironmental.com
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing
As we head into cold and flu season, it’s wise to think about air purification, especially since according to the state health department, 195 Hoosiers died from influenza last year. Pure Air Environmental is an authorized distributor of the Puradigm Air Purification and Surface Decontamination system, which eliminates 99.9 percent of bacteria through the air and indoor surfaces. This includes removing any single-cell bacteria such as staph, MRSA, listeria, salmonella, C. Diff, influenza, common cold and many other harmful pathogens. “This technology really applies to everyone. If you’re breathing, you will benefit from Puradigm,” says Pure Air Marketing Director Jon Hartley. Old-school technology was extremely passive, allowing air to simply pass through your ventilation system while UV light attempted to remove mold and allergens in the ducts only. It really did very little to improve the overall indoor air environment. Hartley describes the Puradigm system as an aggressive, proactive push technology. “It’s advanced now to the point where it’s proactively pushing two million highenergy ion clusters out into your physical environment which destroy impurities and pathogens in 1/76th of a second in the air and on surfaces,” Hartley says. “That’s why it’s so effective and protective.” Not only does the Puradigm air system remove bacteria, but it also has been clinically proven to remove 99.9 percent of mold and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) that are off-gassing from new
building products such as glues, adhesives, formaldehyde and even the plastics and materials that are in building products themselves. VOC’s are a concern as the vast majority have been linked to carcinogens. Pure Air Environmental, a small familyowned business, began five years ago as a radon mitigation company. “Indiana has a great deal of radon gas due to our soil material,” Hartley says. “What’s in our substrate beneath our homes gets up into them and it can’t escape because we’ve built our homes so airtight.” Ventilating radio-active gas from homes is crucial as statistically 21,000 Americans die each year due to long-term radon gas exposure. Protection is as easy as installing a radon mitigation system to safely vent the gas to the exterior. The EPA recommends testing your home every two years as radon gas levels fluctuate due to environmental factors. Pure Air Environmental also cleans air ducts and offers mold remediation services to remove black toxic molds and the toxins they’re off-gassing. You may not think much about indoor air quality, but Hartley says people really should. The EPA recently released a study that showed that poor indoor air quality can reduce one’s life expectancy by 5-7 years. Hartley also cites another study that identifies indoor air quality as the number one threat to our
children’s generation in the coming years. That’s due, in large part, to the fact that society functions differently nowadays. “Generations ago, people used to open their windows and let their homes breathe,” Hartley says. “Now the thought is on energy efficiency and we seal them up tight. Nobody opens their windows anymore. As a result, they’re not getting that fresh air exchange and building those immunities to bacteria by being exposed to natural environments.” It can be hard to convince people of the dangers of poor air quality because it’s not a tangible problem in front of them. It often times does not alert any of your five senses. That’s why air quality testing is so vital. “It’s important to know what you’re breathing in your home and what you are putting in your lungs because it does make a health difference,” Hartley adds. “Every breath matters.” For more information, call 317-760-7873 or email info@pureairenvironmental.com.
