Dr. Angie Hutter enjoyed her 32-year career as a dentist, and when she decided to retire, she was excited to “em-bark” on a new career. Driven by a desire to continue to serve the community of Noblesville, she decided to open a day camp for dogs. She opened the doors to Camp Bow Wow of

“Being a dog-loving family, the idea of a doggie day care really appealed to me,” Hutter says. “My son, Tristan DeHaven, is a former K9 police officer. He loves dogs as well and he agreed to manage Camp Bow Wow. We are both doing something we love and we get to work together.”

The purpose of Camp Bow Wow is to offer a safe and healthy place for dogs to spend the day doing fun dog things while their pet parents are at work. The dogs are referred to as campers and their human caregivers at the camp are called counselors. The staff is crucial to the success of Camp Bow Wow. “We teach our counselors about dog body language and behavior,” Hutter

says. “Counselors constantly scan the dogs in the open play area. They have all had training in animal first aid and dog CPR. It can be a stressful job at times, watching that many campers. That is why we keep our ratios at one counselor to 15 to 20 campers.” A day at Camp Bow Wow includes free play with other campers, and access to outside or inside play. This summer campers enjoyed small pools, splash pads and sprinklers, and themed play will change seasonally. “Roughly every hour we conduct what we call Operation Happy Dog,” Hutter says. “The counselors spend time touching each dog and giving hugs, just to make sure no one has played too hard in the yard and there are no small injuries from overexcited playtime.” The Camp Bow Wow staff is dedicated to keeping the facilities clean and safe. Everything is disinfected daily with a peroxide-based cleaner so there is no chance of toxicity to the campers. Dog bowls are washed in commercial-grade dishwashers.

“We interview any camper interested in attending Camp Bow Wow,” Hutter says. “It is an extra step for the pet parents but it’s a free day of day care for them. This is to ensure their dog will be comfortable with our current campers. Safety is always our most important goal. Sometimes we have to turn down an applicant. That is always very hard for us to do, but it is in the best interest of all.” “My ultimate goal is to know almost all the dogs of Noblesville,” she adds. “I love this town. I want the community to know us as that really awesome place where everybody knows their names.” Camp Bow Wow also offers enrichment programs, grooming and overnight boarding. If not for a friend’s generosity, former basketball player Kristopher D. Loving Sr. may not have had the opportunity to test his skills as a referee.

“His generosity is what sparked me wanting to pay that forward,” Loving says of his friend. “Our focus is local, but we have served and helped people in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Minnesota based on relationships with people I have there.”

“The ideal official is a former athlete that just got done playing,” he says, adding that a playing background is not required. “Some of our best officials never played at any kind of high level. There’s such a shortage of officials all over the country. Hopefully [Save Our Sports] can be part of the solution.”

In 2014, when Loving was looking to get started as a sports official, the $50 registration fee, coupled with a $100 training fee, plus the cost of shoes and a uniform, was too much to afford.

To date, Loving has assisted 25 to 30 people in their officiating journey. Support varies depending on the individual’s need, and can include providing all of the equipment needed, funding their training, connecting them with a mentor, or including them at a sports camp.

“I hit a big-time wall,” he says. A week later, a friend and mentor who introduced him to officiating sent him a uniform and shoes. “He was like, ‘I hope this can help you get started,’” Loving recalls. “He invested in me.”

Since his officiating journey began nearly a decade ago, Loving has continued to serve as a sports official in Big Ten football, NCAA men’s basketball, high school basketball and high school girls lacrosse.

Now, with the January incorporation of his nonprofit organization, Save Our Sports, Loving hopes to provide the training and mentoring needed to train more sports officials throughout the Indiana area and,

Soon after relocating to Noblesville from Minnesota in summer 2022, Loving connected with SCORE Indianapolis volunteer mentors Bill Petrovic and Bob Miramonti. The local branch of the national nonprofit organization provides no-cost mentoring services to small businesses, entrepreneurs and nonprofits. “It was very valuable, very helpful,” Loving says. “They helped challenge me and asked good questions.” He says Petrovic and Miramonti are “good with motivation,” and makes a point to check in with them often and keep them apprised of updates.

“Our light-bulb moment was, ‘You know you’re really doing a big service,’” Petrovic recalls. “You can learn how to be a good person from being good at some occupation, including being a referee. There’s a lot of life experience that can come out of this.” Since Loving’s journey as a sports official began, he’s witnessed positive changes.

Looking ahead, Loving envisions creating a formula for Save Our Sports that can be replicated in each state. “We want to grow it here first,” he says. Ginger’s Cafe has been serving up delicious, made-from-scratch home cooking to the north side area since 2010. It’s wellknown as a great place for breakfast, the perfect site for groups to meet, and a great spot for lunch. Customers appreciate the convenience of the eatery’s take-and-bake freezer meals, carry-out, and catering service.

The interior is homey and cozy. Visitors feel like they have taken a step back in time as they settle into mismatched chairs, some with shiny, silver chrome and turquoise vinyl upholstery. Plenty of wooden tables in the spacious restaurant can accommodate large parties. Friendly servers take pride in efficiently handling large numbers, which are seated in the dedicated back meeting room.

There are classic sandwiches such as the spinach melt, classic grilled cheese, and grilled chicken. Salads include a special bourbon chicken, chef and taco. Entrées do not disappoint. Visitors are treated to dishes and casseroles that are rarely found anywhere else. Pan-fried chicken livers, roast-beef Manhattans, and

homemade meatloaf are customer favorites. For only $25, freezer meals and casseroles that feed four, like the cheesy and meaty lasagna, are available to take home for dinner. The community atmosphere at Ginger’s is hard to beat. It feels like a trip to grandma’s house. Families feel comfortable and children love the kids menu. Servers will even cut off the crust of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for your little ones. Don’t forget the desserts. Scrumptious desserts and Indiana-style pies have a regular rotation in the daily offerings.

“Since COVID it’s been hard,” Perrine says. “We really could use extra help in general. We especially need cooks and servers. CARING BEYOND COMMUNITY WALLS hen CarDon & Associates highlights its “communities,” the organization is not only calling attention to its senior living campuses but to their surrounding towns and global sense of fellowship as well. CarDon cares for communities beyond its own — from neighborhoods just across the street all the way down to exotic locales like Guatemala. Paoli Health & Living, CarDon’s community in Paoli, Indiana, just recently added a service to its meal delivery program for a nearby senior housing complex. Now, in addition to delivering meals every Wednesday, CarDon staffers are hosting monthly cookouts in the complex’s courtyard. “What started out as a program to meet the nutritional needs of this vulnerable group turned into so much more,” said Paoli’s Clinical Liaison Sandra Hatton. “Seniors are greeted with a smile, a hot meal and a care check to make sure they are doing okay. They started out as our neighbors and are now part of our family.” CarDon’s family serves people on the other side of the age spectrum as well. Solarbron, CarDon’s Evansville community, serves as a sponsor of the Tri-State BackPack Hero program in an effort to provide nutritious meals to local students throughout the school year. The program gives free bagged meals to students K-12 on the Friday of each school week to feed them over the weekend. They also receive these food bags through holidays and summer break. “Healthy aging starts when we’re young, so this partnership gives us an opportunity to invest in our youth in a tangible way,” said Solarbron’s Director of Residential Marketing Ashley Mayo. “A full belly makes for a focused student, which leads to a better education experience and healthier life choices. So, by the time they’re walking through our senior living doors, they’ve lived a long and healthy life and are ready to enjoy all they’ve worked toward. It’s a simple effort but a vital part of a healthy community.”

2023 marks the third year Solarbron has hosted the “Lemonade Stand fundraiser” to support the efforts of the Isaiah 117 House, which provides loving homes and everyday needs for children across the country as they await foster care placement. A Solarbron resident’s great-grandson informed the community about this cause when he was just seven years old. “He designs the flyers for our site each year and gives a presentation to our residents,” Mayo said. “This fundraiser is a great opportunity to unite the generations and raise money for a worthy cause. The slogan is ‘Love, you’re not alone.’ The mission is to let each child who stays at Isaiah 117 House know they’re loved and not alone in what can be a difficult situation. Love transcends generations, making this a universally appealing event for our residents, staff and community.” Love transcends borders as well, as evidenced by a CarDon team member’s recent efforts in Guatemala. On a Friday that would have normally found CarDon Chief Growth Officer Kendra Fauth-Edwards delivering meals for Hamilton County Meals on Wheels, she and her family were delivering meals to seniors in Guatemala. They joined the philanthropic traveling group The Village Experience in this effort. “If you know me well, you know how passionate I am about serving seniors,” Fauth-Edwards said. “I love what I do, so this opportunity was extra special.” THE LANGUAGE BARRIER WAS VERY REAL, BUT LOVE IS A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE.” At the end of the day, whether it’s serving senior living residents across Indiana, helping children around the nation or caring for people outside the U.S., CarDon is simply about “family caring for family.”

his is a story about pickleball. And cancer. And friendship. And survival.

It was March of 2022. Danny Wilson was in Fort Wayne to play in a pickleball tournament the next day, with his mixeddoubles partner, Lisa Martin. During the night, Wilson became violently ill. Food poisoning? What lousy timing, he thought. It was no better in the morning. Worse actually. As sick as he was, Wilson was angry because he wouldn’t be able to play in the tournament, and felt he was letting down Martin. Sounds crazy, right? But it’s the way competitors think, and Wilson is a competitor - he always has been. Growing up in Anderson, Wilson played high school golf and tennis, and continued his tennis career at Anderson College. As an adult, he shifted to running. Then he was introduced to pickleball. “I loved it from the

start,” Wilson says.

His first time on the pickleball court, Martin was there too, at the neighborhood courts with friends. She recognized him from passing her home while on his daily run. She referred to him as “runner dude,” and they immediately connected.

When Wilson returned home from that pickleball tournament in March of 2022, the symptoms didn’t improve and he ended up in the emergency room. He wouldn’t go home for more than two weeks. No one ever hopes to have food poisoning, unless the alternative is stomach cancer. It wasn’t food poisoning.

They take their pickleball seriously. They compete together as mixed-doubles partners, and train together on the court and in the gym, all with their eye on the next scheduled tournament. But they’re more than pickleball partners. Their friendship runs deep. “I love him like I love my brother,” Martin says. Wilson and his wife of nearly 30 years, Michelle, and Martin and her husband, Bill, are dear friends. And Wilson and Michelle

Duodenal adenocarcinoma cancer, located where the small intestine connects to the stomach, is rare and persistent. There was a six-hour surgery in April of 2022, and a painful return to the hospital two months later. The scan was clean but the pain was unbearable. Wilson’s frame, even when healthy, could be described as wiry. Cancer ravaged his appetite and left him constantly nauseous. His weight plummeted from 145

to 112. “When I saw him, I went to the car and cried,” Martin says. Bill is a retired physician. They knew, maybe even more than Wilson and Michelle, the seriousness of the situation. “It was tough, not just on me,” Wilson says. “It was hard on Michelle too, physically and mentally.” Through it all, Wilson was determined to return to the pickleball court. “I kept asking the doctors, ‘When can I play?’” he recalls.

Wilson doesn’t advertise his condition, but people talk. “I’ve had pickleball players ask to pray with me,” he says. “People I don’t even know. That means a lot.”

They competed in eight tournaments from June through November, even medaling at West Lafayette in August. “From where I’d come from, that was huge,” Wilson says. But cancer is a stubborn opponent. Always lurking, threatening your body and your peace of mind. And in December of 2022, it returned.

“Surgery is the best way to get rid of it, but it’s so risky because of the location,” Wilson explains. “We’ve decided against it for now.” The summer day is overcast, but not gloomy. It mirrors Wilson’s demeanor. He is quiet, but pleasant. He has taken his three morning chemo pills and mentally prepared himself for the day. He slowly walks to the SUV in his driveway, and makes the short and familiar drive to the oncology center to receive his daily treatment. Lying under the eye of the radiation machine is not physically painful, nor does it take long. He’s gone from the waiting room less than 15 minutes, and looks no different upon his return. But rest assured, it takes its toll.

Sean McMahon, a senior at Noblesville High School, says he has enjoyed his responsibilities as the student body president. “I am the liaison between the student body and the school administration,” Sean says. “I work with both the student body and administration to help make the school better for all. Recently we have also partnered with the parent-teacher association to help them gain insight into what students would like to see in the school.” Sean also loves being a part of the school’s events. “The prom and homecoming are probably the most fun,” he says. “The week leading up to homecoming probably is the overall best, as everyone, including the school staff, is showing school spirit.” Sean also finds time to play sports and get involved in other school activities.

“I am currently part of the Noblesville baseball team,” he says. “The program has been a huge part of my high school career. This year I am also a part of the National Honor Society, something I am very proud to have accomplished. I have also joined the school’s new pickleball club, which is something that is really fun. In the past I have participated in Distributive Education Clubs of America as a sophomore, statequalifying in the sports marketing section. I also have helped with unified flag football

for two years.” Sean loves living in Noblesville. “I think Noblesville generates a lot of opportunities to grow,” he says. “At the high school there are many classes that gear you towards a career you are interested in, such as the internship program. This is something that has really opened my eyes to a future career. Due to this intern program class, I was able to obtain an internship

at Noblesville Pediatric Dentistry, and it has been nothing short of great. I have learned so much about dentistry and the possibilities it provides. Dr. Charles Fuhrer III, DDS, was the first person I contacted, and he has given me such a great learning experience. Everyone there at his office has been so kind in helping me better understand the profession and welcoming me into their business.” Sean’s mom, Angie, says she and her husband are pleased with Sean’s achievements. “As Sean’s parents, we are extremely proud of him,” Angie says. “It has been a joy to watch him learn and grow throughout the years. Sean has an internal drive to do the best he can, which has helped him in and out of school. With the support of his family, friends, teachers, and his faith in God, the sky’s the limit.”

Indiana Wish, a charitable organization dedicated to granting special Christmas wishes for children in Indiana. Presented by Wallington Asset Management, LLC, Christmas in the Kitchen promises an evening filled with

It might come as a surprise to some - the dark stains on the driveway, pitting and cracking in the garage floor, and weather damage to the back porch aren’t just nuisances we have to tolerate. There’s a solution to keeping hard surfaces clean and mold-free, and Jason Kirkby of Fόrte Surfaces can tell you all about it. Fόrte Surfaces began in 2009, added the popular epoxy flooring to their list of services by 2015, and in 2023, updated their name and brand from Indiana Cleaning and Sealing to Fόrte Surfaces, to better represent the products they offer. The family-owned business has Kirkby leading the way as chief executive officer, and he brings plenty of experience to the position.

“I started cleaning and sealing driveways in high school, and have been around concrete my whole life,” he says. “Some of my first customers were Larry Bird and Reggie Miller. From there, I got into the supply side and was selling these products until deciding to join Forte.” The team at Fόrte Surfaces helps homeowners and commercial businesses extend the life of hard surfaces found in areas such as driveways, garage floors, pool decks, basements and porches, all the way up to large-scale buildings and parking garages. “We highly recommend you seal the hard surfaces around your home or business,” Kirkby says. “The hard surfaces around the exterior of your home can cost you up to 15 to 20% of your home’s value to rip out and replace. We can come in and protect that with our proprietary sealants and epoxy flooring systems so you don’t have to replace the surface.”

Epoxy/polyurea flooring is a synthetic resin that not only protects the surface, but also gives a creative flair to the design. We all know what Indiana winter weather can do to our vehicles. Not only does snow and salt wreak havoc on vehicles, but it also drips onto driveways or concrete garage floors, eventually causing pits on the surfaces. The sun, snow, ice, wind and additional debris can damage concrete and stone over the years.

“A pressure washing and sealant lasts about three to five years and there is a lifetime warranty on the epoxy flooring,” Kirkby says. “Sometimes the surface is in such bad condition the customer assumes replacement is the only option. We normally always have a solution for that surface.” Whatever the need, the team’s goal is to create long-lasting surfaces for homeowners and business owners as they work alongside each client, making the space look better than when they arrived.

“I don’t know any other service that can provide that ‘wow’ factor at this budget,” Kirkby says. “The biggest bang for your buck is cleaning that mold and mildew off of the surface. I think it’s just so common, people think it’s a normal thing to have this dark concrete or black limestone.”
