LOCAL NOBLESVILLE BOOKSTORE CELEBRATES 20 YEARS Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing . Photography Provided
Brenda Milthaler had been working big-box retail since 1973. In the spring of 1998, however, she felt led by the Lord to leave her job and open a Christian bookstore in Noblesville. “Part of Christian retail is knowing the people and the community,” says Milthaler, who chose the name Living Truth to proclaim that Jesus is living and is the truth. She secured the property in September 1998 and prepared to open in October. “People told me, ‘You can’t open a store in a month,’” Milthaler recalls. “I said, ‘You can if God’s got a hand in it.’” Since she first opened, Milthaler has been welcomed by Noblesville residents. In fact, one day early on a customer declared, “You’re a Christian bartender. Bartenders serve and listen, and that’s what you do.” When Living Truth first opened, there were close to 30 Christian bookstores in the greater Indianapolis area. Today, fewer than half of them remain. Though her store is still in operation, Milthaler has definitely felt the sting of the recession. While she once employed 10 part-time workers, she has essentially run the store by herself with the help of one volunteer since 2008. She considers the work of her ministry. “I don’t own the store. The Lord does. I just operate it for him,” Milthaler says. “Many people have told me over the years that I need to cut the bleeding, shut it down and get a real job. But that’s not what I hear from God. He always says, ‘Don’t quit.’ “In this business, it’s all about the relationships with the people who come through the door,” Milthaler adds. “I listen to their stories and pray with them. It’s like an extended family. I care about them and they care about me.” For many of her customers, the Living Truth is a sanctuary. One Christmas season, Milthaler recalls a woman who thanked her for providing an escape from the craziness of the other shopping centers. “I came in for some peace,” she shared. Milthaler prays every day that all customers find peace at Living Truth. She also hopes they’ll find the merchandise they seek, whether it be new or used books, bibles, music, jewelry, greeting cards or items for church occasions and important life events. They also do special orders. Even orders that are placed mistakenly make their way into the right hands. For instance, one time Milthaler received a shipment of 50 different styles of bookmarks when she meant to order 12. A woman came in and snatched up a ton of them to take with her on a mission trip to Bangladesh. “It’s neat to see that even mistakes are a part of God’s plan,” says Milthaler, who enjoys helping customers find the items that will serve them or someone they love — products that encourage, 10 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atNoblesville.com
comfort and inspire. She tells the story of a woman who, through the years, has come in to buy dozens of expensive, leather-bound study bibles. Finally, one day Milthaler asked her who the lucky recipients were of these gifts. The woman explained that she runs a bible study at the county jail and that these women have never had anything nice in their lives. “I want them to know that the word of God is important and special so I give them the nicest bibles I can find,” she explained. Recently a teenage boy and voracious book lover came into the store and bought $70 worth of used books. Though he only had $40, his mother paid the balance. “He knows this is an addiction I’ll support,” she said. Milthaler’s goal is to be there for members of the community, many of whom she has watched grow up before her eyes. “Moms have brought their children into the store in baby carriers and now some of them are driving,” says Milthaler, who just celebrated Living Truth’s 20-year anniversary in October. “What a blessing.” Living Truth is located at 17665 Cumberland Rd. in Noblesville. For more information call 317-770-7753 or visit them online at living-truth.com.

Families and holiday shoppers have been thoroughly enjoying The Rink at Hamilton Town Center, a new 3,200 square-foot synthetic ice skating rink.
says MacKenzie Harris, area director of marketing and business development, Hamilton Town Center. “We have a very successful Harvest Fest and spring and fall carnival, so this is our way of offering family entertainment into the winter season as well.”
“The Rink at Hamilton Town Center was developed because we are continually trying to be a community partner and a place for families in the area to enjoy,”
The Rink opened last October to an enthusiastic response. Couples, families, friends and shoppers have put their skates on to enjoy a stress-free activity.
Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Ron Wise
“Our goal is to continue to offer our guests an unmatched, memorable experience when they visit Hamilton Town Center,” Harris adds. “With the new addition of The Rink, we invite families in the Indianapolis area – and beyond – to visit our center to try something new, from the skating experience, to shopping upcoming seasonal trends, to dining at one of the many restaurants the center has to offer.” Families have really been flocking to The

Rink and telling their friends about it. “It’s a truly unique experience,” Harris says. “It’s made of synthetic material, so it’s not cold to the touch or weather dependent. The Rink also opened just in time to celebrate fall and holiday festivities.” Harris says that shoppers and business owners have also been pleased with the Rink. “We can now be a one-stop-shop for all your holiday shopping and entertainment,” Harris says. “Get your gift buying done and then celebrate with a few spins around The Rink. Everyone at the mall is also very excited about The Rink. We are a unique center, and our shop owners, restaurant managers and employees are part of that.” Harris has a work history with ice skating rinks. “It’s funny because one of my first jobs ever was a cashier at my hometown’s local skating rink in Columbus, Indiana,” she says. “Was I good? No. Did I enjoy it? Oh, yes.” Hours for The Rink are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Children can skate for $3, and adults can skate for $5. Harris noted that every Tuesday, children and adults are invited to participate in ‘$2 Tuesdays, where they can skate for only $2. Skate rental is included with rink admission. Personal skates are allowed on the rink but professional-grade figure skates are not. Credit cards will be the only form of payment accepted. Monica Antonelli, Noblesville, says she plans to take her family and visiting relatives to The Rink when they are in town for the Christmas holidays. “My kids and nieces and nephews love ice skating without getting too cold, and this is perfect for them,” she says. Y X E M Y X TE POPULAR FARMERS MARKET VENDOR OPENS FIRST BRICK & MORTAR LOCATION IN NOBLESVILLE

early on for just a bit, but at the time it was not a business direction we decided to take.”
Texy Mexy, with its delicious tamales and salsa, has so many fans that owners Sophie and Gerry Abell have expanded to a new location in Noblesville.
Sophie moved to Noblesville 12 years ago to marry Gerry, who is from Indiana. She sold her salsa and tamales in Texas for many years before she moved to Noblesville.
Over the last several years Texy Mexy has been very popular at catered events and the Farmers Market.
“I had a very successful following in Texas,” she says. “One day, my husband approached me with the idea of letting me start up my dream of being a Farmers Market vendor. We really didn’t know what all it entailed to start up. I researched the permitting process, the health department
“We’ve solely done catering and pop-up events, as well as the Farmers Market,” Sophie says. “We entertained a food truck
requirements, sought out a commercial kitchen to use, borrowed a tent from a neighbor and we started.” On day one, as Sophie and Gerry were giving out salsa samples and were selling it very quickly, they looked at each other and said, “We’re on to something.” They were also successful at The Saxony Fishers Market on Saturday mornings as well. “Once we were accepted into the Noblesville Market, we found out that this was the most profitable option for us,” Sophie says.
atNoblesville.com / DECEMBER 2018 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 17
The tamales are the customer favorites. “From the beginning, my intent has been to take my late mother’s recipes and maintain the flavors that I grew up on,” Sophie says. “I also make tamales to cater to the vegetarian and vegan customers. I make pork, chicken, queso & green chilies, black bean corn and roasted butternut squash. Our tamales are all lard-free and gluten-free.” One of her signature tamales is the roasted butternut squash. “It is my original recipe,” she says.” When I first put it on the menu we had sold out of the others and this was the only option left. People tried it and loved it. It becomes their favorite.” Another favorite is their breakfast tacos. “They sell out fast,” Sophie says. “It’s a mixture of chorizo, potato, egg and cheese. We had customers that would stop by at the market and buy six to eight at a time as neighbors would send them for a taco run.” Of course, their biggest seller is their salsa. “Customers know that you must arrive early to get salsa at the market,” Sophie says. “What is known as Sophie’s Signature Salsa won the ‘Salsa 4 Salsa’ contest this year. You will be able to pick up our 16oz salsa containers at the new restaurant.” Sophie’s favorite is the pork tamale. “I make my pork tamale exactly the way my mom taught me,” she says. “It is a true Texas tamale with seasoned shredded pork. I pride myself in keeping to the recipes she taught me.” Sophie believes their new 818 Logan Street location is perfect.
“We are excited to be a part of historic downtown Noblesville,” she says. “Our unique space is a 128-year-old building. We have a fun modern design, with minimal wall art, because the exposed brick walls are art. I had fun designing our space. We have several features inside the space. One of the features Gerry wanted is an Internet bar. We have the bar facing the beautiful brick wall with USB ports, offering a work space for diners.” Texy Mexy also has a dining bar facing the front window with a full view of the Noblesville courthouse. Texy Mexy is a fastcasual service restaurant.
“You line up to order from the counter,” Sophie says. “We are providing Texy Mexy yellow umbrellas for use if you happen to be in line outdoors. This is to protect you from rain, snow or sun. The umbrellas can be picked up and returned inside the vestibule, which has a heated tile floor for the winter months.” Texy Mexy customers can also look forward to enjoying their favorite tamales and tacos anytime they want, instead of just seasonally. “We will continue doing what we’ve always done, which is carry on our farmers market menu,” Sophie says. “We have customers that have their favorites, and they can be sure to see it on the menu. I’m excited to be able to expand the menu with more taco options, too. In the restaurant, I will be able to add fresh guacamole, queso, soups and tortas to the menu along with other items.”

Sophie and Gerry have two daughters, Jenn, 35, who lives in Texas, and Paige, 27, who lives in Noblesville. Sophie is originally from Fort Worth, Texas. “I love our community,” Sophie says. “We live in Noblesville and are proud supporters of everything that makes this community great. I love the historic downtown feel. We have been in business for eight seasons at the Farmers Market, so we are looking forward to seeing many of our regular customers stop by and eat in our new space as well as meeting many new customers.” Sophie says her loyal fans have made Texy Mexi a success.

It all started when she watched her older sister, Ali, perform in local theatre. Kate Boice thought, “Oh, that looks fun! I’d like to try that.” Just seven years old when she took to the stage, Kate, a fifth-grader at Hinkle Creek Elementary in Noblesville, found her calling, and in the past four years has starred in a dozen shows, including “Bye-Bye Birdie,” “Seussical, The Music Man,” “Joseph & the Amazing Technical Dreamcoat” and “Bridge to Terabithia.” Currently, she nabbed the role of Tiny Tim in the Indiana Repertory Theatre’s (IRT) annual production of “A Christmas Carol.”
performances, the younger actors are split into two casts to share the performances. This not only keeps actors from getting burnt out but also enables the younger actors to not miss a ton of school. In total, Kate will miss 11 days. “The IRT has put on this show for so many years that they have everything running like a well-oiled machine,” Kristen says.
The cast rehearses Mondays through Fridays from 4:30-8:30 p.m. with one weekday off as well as Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. “It’s a big commitment,” Kristen adds. “She has to miss other things she likes to do like her sewing classes, horseback riding and dance. But she never complains because she adores theatre so much.”
She has performed at a number of venues, including Nickel Plate Players, Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre, Beef and Board Dinner Theatre and the Belfry Theatre, but this is Kate’s first professional gig, and she’s loving it. With a real job comes real sacrifice. In order to play Tiny Tim, directors asked Kate to cut 10 inches of her hair. Though it was a bit emotional to do, she donated it to Locks of Love, thrilled to do something good. Another perk, because it’s a professional gig, she gets paid. “It’s all going into her college savings account,” says Kate’s mom, Kristen. Since the IRT puts on so many atNoblesville.com / DECEMBER 2018 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 21
Kate, 11, has done a lot of singing and musical theatre. In fact, this year she and Ali, 12, won the Indiana State Fair Junior Vocal Group. In addition, she recorded a Broadway CD and Christmas CD with her voice teacher.

Over the summer, Kate and Ali participated in the IRT’s Summer Conservatory where they practiced improv, combat and musical theatre. They also did an intensive weeklong workshop in New York City. Kristen says both girls like the IRT experience better than the NYC one. “The IRT instructors pour themselves into the kids,” Kristen says. “Plus, it’s usually not a huge group so they learn a lot in a short amount of time.” Acting is undoubtedly a competitive field. “Getting rejected in theatre I think is a redirection of something better,” Kristen says. “But it’s still hard when you get your hopes up and don’t get the part.” Kate has already learned to take rejection in stride. “It often has nothing to do with your talent,” Kate says. “The director might want someone who is taller or has a different hair color.” Navigating a theatre schedule is a bit like having a child on a travel sports team. “The difference is they’re not practicing for the big game but for the big show,” Kristen says. “And to see how much my daughters love it makes every minute worthwhile.” The IRT is located at 140 W. Washington Street in Indianapolis. “A Christmas Carol” runs from November 23 until December 26. Call the ticket office at 317-635-5252 or visit them online at irtlive.com for more information.

THERE’S A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN DENNIS QUAKENBUSH TALKS FAMILY, EXPERIENCE & GOALS AS NEW HAMILTON COUNTY SHERIFF The life-long Hamilton County resident is a devoted family man with a wife and four boys who like playing basketball and other Meet Dennis Quakenbush. Quakenbush earned his undergrad degree Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Amy Payne
in Business Management and an MBA in Business Administration. It seemed like a logical course of study for him. He grew up learning the family business — his father’s construction company. But a career in business and the corporate world wasn’t on his radar. “I have a passion for serving, helping

people in need and putting others first,” Quakenbush says. “I like being able to make a huge impact by keeping people safe every day.” While keeping citizens safe is his passion, he still values his business training and background. Quakenbush and his wife own a small marketing and graphic design company and small property investing business. “I’m not your classic government politician,” he says. “I come from the business world, and I look at things from the perspective of a taxpayer.” His 16 years of experience in the department also set him apart. A deputy who spent his time moving up in the ranks in the department, Quakenbush started in the department as a dispatcher before becoming a Sergeant then being promoted to Captain of the Patrol Division. For the last eight years, he has been a part of the leadership team at the Sheriff ’s Office. “I built relationships with community leaders and other law enforcement partners, and I’m already working with them to put policies in place,” he says. “I’ve been a part of the department that set the foundation for where we are today. This is just a logical progression.”
“All of the candidates in this race had good ideas to offer,” he says. “The political process is designed to let all candidates bring their best ideas forward for the position. The incident at Noblesville West Middle School rocked everyone to the core, and rest assured, it’s a priority on the new Sheriff ’s mind. “I live in Hamilton County, so it impacts me directly,” Quakenbush says. “I want to live in one of the safest communities in America for my family and yours. A school shooting here in our community was the last thing people would have expected, but the law enforcement community was well prepared. It’s hard when it affects so many people you know at church and in the community. But rest assured, all our law enforcement departments are sharing the best ideas to ensure everyone’s safety. Managing the county’s jail population. “We will have a big impact on the safety of our community through our efforts in the jail, he says. “Connecting the right inmates with the right community services and programs can help reduce the likelihood of them reoffending.” The agency offers high school equivalency, counseling services, mental health services, mentoring programs, AA, NA and partners with Prevail, Transformations, Aspire and other community agencies.

“Our role is and always will be to pursue and carry out justice,” Quakenbush says. “We want to hold people accountable for their crimes, but we see plenty of non-violent offenders and we want to work to connect them with the valuable services and community resources to get them help with rehabilitation, jobs and counseling. If someone is ready to make a change in their life, we want to play our role in that redemptive process.”

ENHANCED CARE. SAME EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY.
Now that the campaign is over and the year winds down, Quakenbush plans to continue to work hard to keep Hamilton County safe. “I look forward to continuing to collaborate with other law enforcement agencies in our community,” he says. “It’s important that all of us know we’re not alone in our efforts. In the meantime, we want to remind all citizens that everyone in society is responsible for the safety of our community. Call us to report suspicious activity, look out for your neighbors, be involved in your community like your church and your children’s schools. It makes a difference.”

Central Indiana Orangetheory Owners: Carolyn and Shaun McDonald (Carmel, Fishers-Geist, West Carmel-Zionsville and the future Fishers-Nickel Plate), Katie Douglas (Greenwood and Downtown Indy), Lyle Feigenbaum (Avon) and Jennifer Haas (Ironworks and the future Broad Ripple).

Looking for a total body workout that adheres to your schedule, offers guidance not guesswork and helps you continue your path to progress long after the workout is over? Then Orangetheory Fitness may be the perfect fitness solution for you. “We have classes scheduled throughout the day with nationally certified coaches who monitor your progress and make sure you are not over or under training,” says Carolyn McDonald, owner of Orangetheory studios in Carmel, FishersGeist and West Carmel-Zionsville. The newest studio, Fishers-Nickel Plate, is set to open in January 2019 directly across from Fishers City Hall. Shortly after, a Broad Ripple/Butler area studio will open at the intersection of Kessler and College in Indianapolis. Developed by former Pilates instructor, Ellen Latham, Orangetheory is a sciencebased workout that gets results. It is centered on the principle of EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) that suggests if one challenges their body at the correct intensity, they will experience an effect that keeps them burning calories even after the workout is over.
“If you spend 12 or more minutes of the hour-long workout in the ‘Orange Zone,’ which is at 84 percent or more of your maximum heart rate, you will experience the afterburn,” says Katie Douglas, owner of Orangetheory studios in Greenwood and downtown Indianapolis. “You don’t have to work out every day because your body will be burning calories even as it recovers.” With 1,000 locations throughout the US (and seven here in Central Indiana), Orangetheory is designed for all fitness levels and they boast a diverse community of clients with a variety of fitness goals. Staff members and coaches take the time to get to know each member, build a rapport and assure them that they will get the maximum benefit from the Orangetheory workout. McDonald says each member wears a heart rate monitor that tracks their progress in real time throughout the class and gives them (and their coach) insight into their performance. Orangetheory takes the guesswork out of your fitness regimen and creates a reciprocal relationship between you, your coach and other Orangetheory members. Plus, the workout changes every day and that variety keeps members engaged. “The level of community created in each studio is one of my favorite aspects about the Orangetheory program,” McDonald
says. “The coaches work hard to ensure that every member is comfortable and they are wonderful about offering modifications as needed to ensure everyone feels successful in their workout.” Everyone on staff is trained to offer a welcoming, energetic environment and each location offers a robust schedule of between 60-70 hours of training each week, so Orangetheory is ready whenever you are. “Members schedule classes during the times most convenient for them either in person or with our app,” Douglas says. “In addition, because all Orangetheory memberships are reciprocal, members are welcome to take classes at any studio in the country.” McDonald believes Orangetheory is the future of fitness and she is proud to be part of it. “We have grown so quickly over the past four years here in Central Indiana and our members are constantly building on this incredible TEAM OTF community and culture,” she says. “For local residents, your first class is free, so why not come by and see what we are all about?”
