DOWNTOWN NOBLESVILLE ICE PLAZA IS BACK THROUGH JANUARY 6 director of Noblesville’s Parks and Recreation Department. “It gives it more of that smalltown feel. People just like the fact that they Once again this holiday season, Downtown can drive past it and see it.” Noblesville will be transformed into a Winter Wonderland, with Federal Hill From Nov. 23 through Jan. 6, the Federal Commons’ annual Ice Plaza serving as the Hill Commons’ Ice Plaza will be open to all, center of it all. offering up a unique ice skating experience in the heart of Noblesville. For a cost of $12, “The way that it’s lit up and the decorations individuals can skate on the Plaza all day just add a little flair to Downtown Noblesville long, coming and going as they please. come in sizes for the whole family. Unlike some other ice rinks, the Ice Plaza’s $12 skating fee allows visitors to come and go from the rink as many times as they’d like throughout a day. Bennett says there are many reasons why this is the case. “People don’t ice skate year-round here [in Indiana], so you might get out there, and 20 to 30 minutes in, your feet hurt,” Bennett says.
atNoblesville.com / DECEMBER 2019 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 5
By allowing ice skaters to come and go throughout the day, the hope is that they will venture to nearby businesses for a meal or some shopping. “You may want to take a break, go grab some lunch and do a little shopping, and you can still come back later on and get your money’s worth,” Bennett says. “With other rinks around us, it’s done by the session, so you have to get your time in during that session. We’re a little more flexible. If you want to come back six times that day, then great. You can come back six times.” In addition to giving Ice Plaza patrons this freedom, the rink’s daily open-door rate allows them to support Noblesville merchants as well. “We wanted to make sure that what we were bringing to Downtown Noblesville was going to be a benefit to everyone — that we wouldn’t just have ice skating out there,” Bennett says. “We wanted to get the local merchants involved as well and try to help them drive business.” Through their community-minded efforts, the Ice Plaza has gained support from many businesses in the area. “The Ice Plaza has been well received from the business community and we have a number of returning sponsors as well as new partners this year, including (as of today) First Merchants, Gaylor Electric, Indiana American Water, IU Health Saxony, Hamilton County Tourism, McGavic Outdoor Power, Cathedral High School, CSI Signs, Burtner Electric, Midwest Paving, Pediatric Dentistry of Noblesville, Peterson Architecture and Stony Creek Early Learning Center,” says Kristi Spehler, community development manager with Noblesville’s Parks and Recreation Department. In keeping with the holiday spirit, the Ice Plaza will host some seasonal festivities. “There will be some themed nights and a couple small events surrounding the rink, including the Christmas Cottage, which 6 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atNoblesville.com
is also out there at Federal Hill Commons,” Bennett says. Like previous years, the Ice Plaza will also team up with area schools for fundraisers too. “There might be a night where a particular school will hold their PTO night and a percentage of our revenue will go back to the school as a fundraiser for their PTO (Parent Teacher Organization),” Bennett says. “That’s a win-win for both of us. It brings more skaters to us, but it also generates revenue for them.” “We did the PTO nights last year, and the schools weren’t all able to schedule something,” Spehler adds. “So they’ll definitely want to look into that for this year. We’ll be working with them again.” As a born-and-raised Noblesville native, Bennett just sees the ice rink as being yet another piece to the city’s overall charm. “I’ve watched this place evolve over the last 40 years,” Bennett says. “And somehow, as much as we’ve grown, we’ve managed to maintain that small-town feel. I think things like the rink are what allow us to do that. We’re excited about keeping that community feel here.”

Mayor John Ditslear
NOBLESVILLE 20/20 SPOTLIGHTING MAYOR DITSLEAR’S CONTRIBUTIONS TO DOWNTOWN The administration of Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear comes to an end December 31, closing out the career of the longesttenured mayor in the city’s history. In the final edition of the Noblesville 20/20 series, Noblesville Magazine looks at how the historic downtown has been supported by Ditslear during his 16 years in office and his vision to strengthen and expand the authentic core of the community. “The heart of it all.” That’s how Ditslear refers to downtown. And for good reason. In addition to serving as the administrative center for both city and county government, downtown is home to an eclectic mix of businesses. Putting the “hip” in “Hipstoric” are the mom-and-pop shops, trendy boutiques, gift stores, antique dealers and
more than a dozen restaurants, cafés, delis, diners and breweries that fill the square — not to mention every type of service provider imaginable. Given the importance of Noblesville’s downtown to the community’s identity, the city has supported the Central Business District by investing in the infrastructure, maintenance and amenities that have improved the overall experience for local citizens and out-of-town visitors.
stimulated by $2M in investment, including $1.1M in private spending. Businesses such as Moonshot Games, Uptown Café and Primeval Brewing are just a few examples that received matching funds through the grant program. As a result, the downtown has never looked better. Nor has the downtown ever been busier with nearly 100% of street-front commercial real estate space currently occupied. And for his final year in office, Ditslear won approval by the Noblesville Common Council to dedicate two full-time workers and the equipment for downtown maintenance and general upkeep on a daily basis.
The proof is evident on nearly every building thanks to the City of Noblesville Façade Improvement Grant Program. Created in 2008 by the economic development department and funded by the “This investment will enable us to raise the Noblesville Common Council, 69 façade grant projects have been completed thus far, bar to keep downtown looking spectacular,

Mayor Ditslear’s favorite event remains the annual city-ran Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks Festival. It typically attracts more than 15,000 residents who line the streets leading to the patriotic parade and festival that celebrate the country’s independence. Last year, Ditslear moved the festival to Forest Park to expand the event — one that the community enjoyed so much it will return in 2020.
each and every day,” Ditslear says. “And to better support downtown, our street department will now take care of snow removal from downtown sidewalks so businesses no longer have to.” The city’s investment has been much appreciated by building owners around the square. "The façade grant program available through the city has been invaluable, allowing us to pursue improvements that, otherwise, may not have been possible at the time,” says Robyn Littler, co-owner of Noble Coffee & Tea Co. along with her husband Mark. “Further, for other downtown specific issues, namely parking, the city has hosted a number of open meetings, permitting all citizens to voice their concerns and opinions. Lastly, as a merchant with a great deal of sidewalk in front of their shop, I'm particularly excited to learn that the city will be salting the wintery walkways this year.”
MAYOR DITSLEAR
As with most thriving downtowns, the key to success has been strong community support. Groups such as Noblesville Main Street and Nickel Plate Arts have been crucial partners. More than 300 cultural arts events are offered each year through collaborative efforts of diverse organizations that draw more and more people to downtown. For one such event, Main Street’s annual Street Dance itself sees more than 10,000 revelers packing the square on a single night.
“The parade is just one example of the many traditions that are important to Noblesville and that I’ve been honored to take part in,” Ditslear says. “Our city may grow and change, but I love the hometown spirit and small-town feel that brings people out to watch and participate year after year.” Because of its charm, downtown is attracting more residents who want to live in an urban, walkable environment with connectivity to amenities. A brief stroll or bike ride connects the square with

Seminary Park, Southside Park, Federal Hill Commons, Forest Park, and further out, Potter’s Bridge Park. These connections were made possible thanks to joint citycounty funding of the Riverwalk, White River Greenway Trail and, by the end of 2019, the new pedestrian bridge along Logan Street. Despite all the focus on downtown, it took a major push from the city to jumpstart construction on its first mixed-use development in more than a century – the Levinson. The objectives of this transformational in-fill initiative were to fill a need for a housing type identified by the 2016 housing analysis, attract more residents to live downtown and support local merchants, create more of a nighttime culture and meet the demand for greater parking capacity. Initiated by Ditslear as one of the top priorities of the Noblesville NOW capital improvement plan announced in 2018, the $24.3M publicprivate project is replacing a parking lot with a Hipstoric-worthy, architecturally significant building, adding 83 high-end apartments plus 5,000 square feet of commercial space and the downtown’s first parking facility. If Ditslear’s time in office is remembered for any single project, while there are many contenders such as the Levinson or expanding 146th Street east of State Road 37 — Federal Hill Commons is the likely top choice. Nestled within the newly created Federal Hill District, the urban park and amphitheater built in 2017 was envisioned with the goal to expand downtown across the White River and create a new western gateway to the historic square.
new to Noblesville. And with the Ice Plaza now entering its third year, Federal Hill Commons is a year-round destination with the wintertime ice-skating rink having grown into a new family holiday tradition. Looking ahead, Ditslear’s vision for the Federal Hill District will surely serve as a catalyst for the future economic development opportunities to come — including the potential for more mixed-use projects and a more prominent role for the White River flowing through the heart of downtown.
NOBLESVILLE 20/20: A COMMUNITY IN TRANSITION The Noblesville community has grown considerably under the leadership of John Ditslear since he became mayor in 2004. Investment throughout its entire 36 square miles — not just in downtown — has led the city beyond its humble origins. The population has soared by 57%. The miles of roadways patrolled by police and maintained by street department crews have grown by 72%.
36% drop in violent and property crime. The Noblesville Fire Department consistently achieves stellar response times to emergency calls. Higher standards have been put in place to ensure quality construction for new developments. Sewers and utilities have been expanded to meet greater demand. Through it all, Ditslear’s stewardship has preserved what makes Noblesville so special. He, his department directors and their staff have worked diligently through four terms to put Noblesville on a course for an even brighter future. They have set the stage for the next administration to carry on the many initiatives that have only begun and paved the way for what Noblesville can and will be for generations to come. “As I prepare to leave office, I’m proud of the work we have done, the progress we have made and the outstanding reputation that Noblesville has earned,” Ditslear said. “I truly love this city and the people who make up our community. The years I have been honored to serve as mayor have been the most rewarding of my life, and I thank the citizens for entrusting me with this honor.”
With this growth, one would expect challenges. However, city leadership has strategically tackled those inherent View a video in tribute to Mayor Ditslear challenges head-on. In 2019, the Noblesville on the city’s YouTube page at youtube.com/ Police Department recorded a successful Cityof Noblesville.
This expansion brought even more qualityof-life amenities to downtown such as outdoor concerts, theater productions, festivals, event space, greenspace, a new playground and an expanded farmer’s market. POPULAR FORD’S GARAGE RESTAURANT OPENS FIRST INDIANA LOCATION AT HAMILTON TOWN CENTER Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr
An auto-themed restaurant concept located in Central Indiana, home of the Indy 500? Makes sense. Ford’s Garage, a Florida-based restaurant chain with 12 stores in the Sunshine State and one in Dearborn, Michigan, is officially
adding a location in Indy to its lineup, and founder Mike McGuigan says the decision was a no-brainer.
was really a matter of time before we started in the midwest states rather than breaking into the east or west coasts.”
“As we continue to expand out of Florida, and being a tourist destination on the west coast of Florida, a large portion of our patrons and tourists are snowbirds and come from the midwest, so there’s been a built-in brand awareness,” McGuigan explains. “So it
Indy’s association with auto and racing culture played an additional role in McGuigan’s decision, and the Noblesville location, in the space previously occupied by Mo’s Irish Pub in Hamilton Town Center, features decor that ties into that culture.
atNoblesville.com / DECEMBER 2019 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 13
“When you combine all these factors, Indianapolis was a first choice outside of Florida to build a presence other than our Dearborn, Michigan, restaurant,” say McGuigan, who first launched the Ford’s Garage concept in downtown Fort Myers — less than one mile from the former winter residence of Henry Ford himself — in 2012, and began scouting locations outside of Florida two years ago. The eatery, like all of its sister stores, is a casual, all-ages establishment with a menu full of classic American fare like burgers, wings and salads, as well as craft beer, wine and cocktails. The visual aesthetic in each Ford’s Garage is a throwback to prohibition-era taverns and 1920s service stations, with gas pumps, memorabilia and actual Ford vehicles adorning the bar and dining areas. “We’re very burger-centric but almost anyone can find something to satisfy them on the menu,” says Sam Tancredi, Indianapolis operating partner with Ford’s Garage. “For the fish lovers, we sell a blackened salmon and two tuna dishes that are big sellers, and there are chicken tenders and a great French onion soup.” Several burgers on the menu will be named after notable former and current Hoosiers and iconic figures associated with the city and state, including former Indiana Pacer Reggie Miller, former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, as well as legendary auto racing drivers and Indy 500 winners A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti. “We’re so excited for the community here to experience the restaurant,” Tancredi says. “We have two Ford Model A cars inside the building, one over the bar and one in the side dining room. There’s an old Ford truck out on the front patio that customers can also experience, and they can actually eat on the truck bed. It’s really a fun concept - kids love it, and car buffs can appreciate it.” The Ford’s team decided to tear down several walls and a refrigeration space

in the former Mo’s Irish Pub bar area in order to create a more open floor plan in the approximately 7,100-square-foot building. Five patio doors will open onto 1,200 feet of outdoor patio space for the spring and summer months. Tancredi says local support behind the restaurant has been largely positive since Ford’s Garage leaders announced plans to open the northside restaurant. “When we made the announcement we were surprised how many people here had heard about us,” Tancredi says. “A lot of people here have been down to Fort Myers at the original downtown location or the other ones in Florida.”

A MERRY PRAIRIE HOLIDAY CONNER PRAIRIE’S INAUGURAL EVENT IS THE NEW HOME OF THE REYNOLDS FARM CHRISTMAS LIGHTS Merry Prairie Holiday festival.”
Writer / Josh Brown Photography provided by Conner Prairie & Amy Payne
Norman Burns, President and CEO at Conner Prairie, is excited to include the light display and bring a new tradition to Hamilton County.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and Conner Prairie hopes to make this Christmas season even more wonderful for families across Hamilton County. The inaugural “A Merry Prairie Holiday” event officially started on November 29 and will continue through December 31. The new holiday festival has something for everyone, but perhaps the biggest news of the event is the inclusion of the popular Reynolds Farm Christmas Lights display. Back in July, it was announced that the iconic light display was gifted to Conner Prairie for its new winter experience. “Our Christmas light display was born out my father’s love for Christmas and our community,” said Gary Reynolds, owner and chairman of Reynolds Farm Equipment, in a July statement. “Transitioning our Christmas lights display to Conner Prairie ensures this tradition of celebrating Christmas with lights continues as part of Conner Prairie’s new A
“Winter is always a special time at Conner Prairie thanks to our 40-year plus tradition of holiday festivities,” Burns says. “This year, it will be even more so as we bring new experiences to the holiday season and carry on a time-honored family tradition by displaying the Reynolds Christmas lights, donated by Gary Reynolds and his family, across the grounds as part of the new A Merry Prairie Holiday Festival.” In the past, it wasn’t uncommon to see cars lined up all the way back onto State Road 37 for the drive-thru light display. This year, the display is set up across Conner Prairie’s grounds for visitors to walk through and experience. “We are incredibly excited to have the Reynolds Christmas lights this year,” says Chris Petrelli, Senior Director of Museum
Experiences at Conner Prairie. “They were extremely generous in donating that incredible display. It is a major tradition for everyone in Hamilton County. We are humbled and honored to take the baton and keep this beloved tradition going. We spent a lot of time running extension cords and placing the lights. People will be able to get a new perspective on the display. It’s going to be great to see the lights spread out across our grounds.” A Merry Prairie Holiday will include much more than just the Reynolds Christmas Lights. The festival is jam-packed with family-friendly events like the North Pole Village — complete with a toy workshop to make holiday gifts, a Polar Bear Plunge dry snow tubing hill, Reindeer Games Midway, Claus’ Cabin, where kids can meet Mrs. Claus and drop their letters off to Santa, and the Kringle’s Carousel ride. Local entertainers and musicians will perform throughout each night on the “Blitzen’s Bandstand,” too. History buffs will appreciate a walk through

Prairietown, which includes the 1860s Hoosier Homefront and Soldiers Camp to learn how the season was celebrated during the time of the Civil War. The classic Conner Prairie by Candlelight favorites, like Dr. Campbell’s Soiree, is included as well as a live reading from Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol” with the sounds of Christmas carolers. “The great thing about this festival is we have planned it to be a two-hour experience,” Petrelli says. “Not only do you get to experience the Christmas lights but all of these events, too. It really has a variety of experiences that the entire family will enjoy.”
too cold. We will also have several fire pits going and plenty of hot-chocolate stands throughout the grounds. So, don’t fear the cold too much.” A Merry Prairie Holiday will be held Friday through Sunday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. Advance tickets are $16 per guest and $8 per member. Tickets purchased at the gate will be $20 per guest or $10 per member. For more

The festival will also include a Winterland Wagon Ride. The ride will take guests across the historic grounds and through thousands of the Christmas lights. “I have an 11-year-old and an 8-yearold, and I’m excited about the wagon ride and the Prairietown experience,” Petrelli adds. “I think the tubing hill and the carousel will also be big crowd-pleasers.” Unlike the popular Headless Horseman Halloween event, A Merry Prairie Holiday will not have any time ticketed rides or events. Instead, all of the events, like the Winterland Wagon Ride, the Kringle’s Carousel and the Polar Bear Plunge, will all be first come, first served. Petrelli stresses that there shouldn’t be much of a need for families and visitors to show up extremely early before gates open for the event. A Merry Prairie Holiday is an outdoor festival. Even though the colder weather is upon us, Petrelli urges families not to be deterred from visiting, even on some of the more chilly evenings. “Obviously, people should bundle up, but I want to reassure people that we have opportunities for you to stay warm, too,” he says. “Our welcome center, store and more will be open for people to come inside if they get atNoblesville.com / DECEMBER 2019 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 19

TARA HAMASHUK SPONSORED BY:
Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
A concern about local food insecurity and a determination to see an idea come to fruition were the driving factors that led Tara Hamashuk to become a Gold Award Girl Scout. Currently a junior at Noblesville High School, she became a recipient of the prestigious award in June 2019. Hamashuk partnered with Teeter Retreat and Organic Farm, an outreach of Noblesville First United Methodist Church (NFUMC) to establish a self-sustaining program that has contributed over 5,500 eggs to Dinners on Us.
a project related to helping animals, but I must admit I am surprised it was chickens. My Girl Scout troop and I volunteered at a food pantry and that is where we learned about food insecurity in Hamilton County. I learned that even though Hamilton County is one of the richest counties in Indiana, we still have over 28,000 families dealing with food insecurity.”
Hamashuk continues, “I heard that Teter Farm wanted to add chickens for fun and educational purposes, so I proposed that we add egg layers (chickens that produce eggs) and donate the eggs to Dinner’s on Us, a community dinner hosted by When asked how she came up with the idea, NFUMC. Everyone in Noblesville is Hamashuk says, “I knew I wanted to have invited to the Thursday night community
dinner but many of the people are dealing with food insecurity.” Teeter Farm would only agree to host Hamashuk’s project if it generated enough funds to pay for itself and included a plan for the care of the chickens. Hamashuk raised money to build a chicken coop through donations and persistently visited Lowes and Tractor Supply Company until their managers found a way to contribute supplies. The key to her plan was to sell eggs to shareholders who paid in advance for 12 weeks of eggs. That income provides the money needed for chicken feed, straw, and even egg cartons. The well being of the chickens is maintained by volunteers that Hamashuk has recruited and trained. “When I started the project, I was worried that I would not be able to complete it as I was busy with schoolwork and tennis, and the chickens need to be tended two times a day,” she says. “Luckily, I have so many great volunteers who have stepped up to take care of the chickens and clean the eggs. I would

not have been able to have such a successful project without the great volunteers who also love chickens and want to fight food insecurity in our community. For every egg we sell, we donate at least one egg.” Another facet of Hamashuk’s project is the Chicken Chats she developed. These short educational talks inform farm visitors about the nutritional benefits of fresh eggs and the importance of humane treatment for farm animals. People enjoy meeting the chickens as Hamashuk explains how fun they are to work with. Hamashuk has advice for others who want to make a difference, “You need to pick a topic that you’re very passionate about and that you’re willing to dedicate time and hard work toward. Always keep in mind the goals you hope to achieve. You must believe in yourself and don’t doubt your thinking. Don’t be discouraged by others, just follow your dreams in helping the community and always stay positive about your work!”

Noblesville Girls Soccer
Takes Home State Championship Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
When asked about his team, Noblesville girls’ soccer coach Mike Brady says, “As a coach, you can’t know if a team will go on to win a championship, but I got the feeling this team was special because they worried more about each other than themselves.”
On Nov. 2, the Noblesville Girls’ Soccer Team won the Class 3A State Championship after defeating Carmel 1 to 0. The win was even sweeter not only because it was the first time the Millers won the title, but because they held off the defending, 11-time champion Carmel from scoring. Hard work, hours of practice and dedication all came together to create an
undefeated season. Along the way, a culture working together and caring for each other like family was created. “This team stepped into Miller soccer culture beginning this summer,” Brady says. “The culture has been built for years by all the players who have worn the Noblesville jersey before them. Some members have

had already been a part of the culture for the past couple of years but all embraced our mantra of ‘We Are Together’.” Originally from southern California, Brady moved to Indianapolis after getting a master’s degree at San Diego State. He began coaching soccer when he became a Noblesville High School English teacher 24 years ago. Although he has coached both boys and girls, he has spent the last 17 years as the girls’ varsity coach. When asked about the highlights of the championship game, Brady says, “Scoring the goal and the way we defended for 80 minutes was important. Each of our players won their individual battles throughout the game. But even with all these highlights, something important happened before the game even began. “I told the team to ‘win the walkout’. The walkout is when the two teams walk out together and get introduced. During the walkout, I could see by the way our team members were carrying themselves, that they weren’t cocky, but confident.” Although the team’s six seniors will not be returning next year, future players will likely benefit from the culture they contributed. Brady feels the team will continue to succeed as long as they maintain their values. He is grateful for the support he has had from the Noblesville community. “The crowds, including parents, students, and the community, were encouraging all year,” Brady says. “We’re going to go into next season as the defending state champs and as a team that didn’t lose a game the past season, so we’ll know what a win against us will mean to our opponents. But we’ll be just fine as long as we maintain our culture and have the support of Noblesville which will allow us to continue to thrive and grow together.” Brady has some advice to future soccer players, “Dream big and if you want to really enjoy your dreams when they come true, dream together. I told the team before the game that it would be a bunch of very good soccer players vs. a family — and the result was that the family won.” 26 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atNoblesville.com
