STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

MAREN DEAN Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Maren Dean, a senior at Noblesville High School, believes her internship at Nickel Plate Arts will pave the way towards a career in the arts. “I’m the only intern at the Noblesville campus so I have a lot of different jobs,” she says. “I do a lot of work on what is called The Square, which is a site we use for our gift shop and our gallery art. It basically keeps track of the items that we have in stock at the gallery.” Dean has also learned about event planning. “I also help plan some events at Nickel Plate like First Friday and Second Saturday,” Dean says. “I have the opportunity to design crafts for children for our Second Saturday events. There are also some days when I get to come up with craft ideas that are fun, because my entire job becomes doing arts and crafts for hours.” Dean thoroughly enjoys her internship. “My favorite thing about interning at Nickel Plate Arts are the events,” she says. “Since working at Nickel Plate Arts is technically a class for school, I only need to be there when I have my internship block. Because I have a part-time job outside of school, it has been hard to make it to a lot of events, but I have been to a few. My favorite so far has been Day of the Dead. We had some cool vendors who worked that day. The live music is always amazing at these events, and 6 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

we had Mexican food from Texy Mexy that smelled so good. Events like this are a great opportunity to meet very interesting people and I got to have some great conversations with very lovely artists.” Dean plans on going to school for arts administration. “I hope that with this degree I can do something artistic like becoming an art curator, but I want to explore other possible job ideas while I’m in college,” she says. “Regardless, whatever career I go into I want to be surrounded by art and creativity. My biggest wish is to share my appreciation for art with others, and influence future art historians, curators and artists.” Dean is excited about the future. “I have yet to decide what college I want to go to but I’m leaning towards going to Indiana University Bloomington for their arts administration major,” she says. “Arts administration is a surprisingly established major at IU despite how niche it is. That’s why I’m so drawn to IU as a school.” Dean recommends that other students secure internships. “It is a great way to reaffirm your future interests, and I have learned so much about what I want out of my future artistic career,” she says. “I also feel a lot more confident now about doing a grown-up job. I feel like I have the potential to be very successful in art curating and I have learned so many necessary skills that I could never learn in a classroom. So I

would say to anyone interested in doing an internship that it’s a great way to learn about yourself and your interests and aspirations.” Dean pursues extracurricular school activities when she has the time. “I have always had a really busy schedule, especially with my part-time job, so there

are just a few school activities that I am a part of,” she says. “I play violin for my school’s intermediate orchestra. I’ve been in orchestra since the sixth grade, and I have been in the high school intermediate orchestra for four years. I am also a part of the school’s tennis team. I’ve been on the team for four years.”

their community. “I would like to tell people to be kind to your community, because there are so many

amazing people in Noblesville, and so many businesses that need your support including Nickel Plate Arts,” she says. “Just make sure to show Noblesville a little love in 2024.”

Dean says Noblesville is a great place to grow up. “I love Noblesville not only because all my friends are here, but I also love the community,” she says. “Downtown Noblesville is such a fun place. It’s where my friends and I always love to hang out, and we just love to go out to eat at Rosie’s or Uptown Cafe. I love it when we go to the Farmer’s Market in the summer and the iceskating rink in the winter. This place feels like home for me and all my friends. It was the best place to grow up.” Dean adds that people should give back to

A Beginner’s Guide to Health and Wellness Story & Photography Provided

Embarking on a journey toward improved health and wellness can be both exciting and rewarding. For beginners, understanding the fundamentals of nutrition and exercise is key to establishing a foundation for a healthier lifestyle. This comprehensive guide aims to provide valuable insights and practical tips to kickstart your journey toward a balanced and fulfilling approach to well-being. Before beginning these lifestyle changes, please consult your local health care professional.

NUTRITION BASICS FOR BEGINNERS 1. BALANCED DIET

A balanced diet is the cornerstone of good health. Aim to include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats in your meals. This diversity ensures that your body receives the essential nutrients it needs to function optimally.

2. HYDRATION Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Consider replacing sugary drinks with water, herbal teas or infused water for added flavor without the extra calories.

3. PORTION CONTROL Pay attention to portion sizes to avoid overeating. Use smaller plates, listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues, and savor each bite. Eating mindfully can help prevent mindless overconsumption.

4. LIMIT PROCESSED FOODS Minimize your intake of processed and sugary foods. These items are often high in unhealthy fat, sugar and salt, contributing to weight gain and negatively impacting overall health.

5. MEAL PLANNING Plan your meals in advance to ensure you have nutritious options readily available. Preparing meals at home allows you to control ingredients and make healthier choices.

EXERCISE ESSENTIALS FOR BEGINNERS

INTEGRATING NUTRITION AND EXERCISE

If you’re new to exercise, begin with lowintensity activities. Walking, swimming or cycling are excellent choices for beginners. Gradually increase the intensity and duration as your fitness level improves.

Consider the timing of your meals in relation to your workouts. Eating a balanced meal or snack before exercising can provide the necessary energy, while post-exercise nutrition aids in recovery.

2. SET REALISTIC GOALS

2. SEEK PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE

1. START SLOW

Establish achievable and realistic fitness goals. Whether it’s walking for 30 minutes a day or completing a short workout routine, setting attainable goals will keep you motivated.

1. TIMING MATTERS

3. MIX IT UP

If possible, consult with a nutritionist or fitness professional, especially when starting a new regimen. They can provide personalized advice based on your individual needs and goals.

Variety is key to maintaining interest and preventing boredom. Incorporate a mix of cardiovascular exercises (e.g., walking, jogging) and strength training (e.g., bodyweight exercises, light weights) to target different muscle groups and improve overall fitness.

3. CELEBRATE PROGRESS Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Whether it’s completing a workout or choosing a nutritious meal, recognizing progress fosters a positive mindset and motivates continued efforts.

4. PRIORITIZE CONSISTENCY OVER INTENSITY

4. BUILD A SUPPORT SYSTEM

Consistency is crucial in building a sustainable exercise routine. Aim for regular, moderate-intensity workouts rather than sporadic high-intensity sessions. Consistency leads to lasting results.

Surround yourself with a supportive community. Share your goals with friends and family, or join fitness classes or groups. Having a support system can provide encouragement and accountability.

5. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY Pay attention to how your body responds to exercise. If you experience pain (not to be confused with the normal discomfort of a challenging workout), give yourself time to recover and consider adjusting your routine.

Health and wellness for beginners involves understanding the fundamentals of nutrition and exercise. By incorporating balanced nutrition, gradual and consistent exercise, and mindful lifestyle choices, individuals can pave the way for a healthier and more fulfilling life. Remember, small changes add up over time, and the key is to find a sustainable and enjoyable approach that aligns with your personal preferences and goals. 12 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

NAVIGATING VACCINES AS AN ADULT Writer / Julia Miller, Manager of Inpatient Pharmacy at IU Health North

KNOW WHICH VACCINES ARE RECOMMENDED Julia Miller

Vaccinations aren’t just for the young—they are an essential pillar of health maintenance, particularly as we age. For individuals aged 55 and older, staying up to date with vaccinations can significantly fortify overall well-being.

ADDRESSING COMMON CONCERNS It’s understandable that many people are nervous to introduce vaccines into their bodies. Two common concerns are safety and vaccine efficacy, or how effective it will be. Most vaccine side effects are quite mild and could include things such as arm pain or a fever. Severe or persisting side effects are rare. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) constantly monitors vaccine side effects. No vaccine can fully protect you from a disease all the time. This is especially true for vaccines focusing on viruses that change often, such as influenza and COVID-19. Even if you do experience infection, the vaccine should lower the severity of the sickness.

There are several vaccines recommended for adults. They include: Influenza (Flu) Vaccine Annual flu shots are highly recommended for adults. People over 65 years of age should receive a higher dose flu vaccine. COVID-19 Vaccine For individuals aged 55 and above, getting vaccinated against COVID-19 remains a critical step in safeguarding against severe illness, hospitalization and complications associated with the virus. Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap) Vaccine A one-time Tdap vaccine booster is suggested for adults who haven’t received it previously, followed by a tetanus-diphtheria (Td) or Tdap booster every ten years. This vaccine guards against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough. Measles, Mumps and Rubella Vaccines All Adults born after 1957 without a previous vaccine or laboratory evidence of immunity or disease should be vaccinated with MMR. This is a live vaccine and should not be given if a person is immunocompromised. Varicella (Chickenpox) Vaccine Adults with no evidence of immunity to varicella should get this vaccine. Shingles Vaccine Shingles, caused by the varicella-zoster

virus, can cause a painful rash and long-term nerve pain, especially in older adults. The shingles vaccine, available as Shingrix, is recommended for individuals aged 50 and older. Pneumococcal Vaccine Pneumococcal disease can lead to pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections, posing heightened risks for older individuals. The CDC recommends two pneumococcal vaccines for those over 65. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Vaccines Adults 60 years and older are recommended to receive a single dose of RSV vaccine if their healthcare provider thinks it would be beneficial. Hepatitis Vaccines Multiple two, three and four dose vaccine series are available for Hepatitis A and B. Adults under 60 are recommended to get one of the series of hepatitis B vaccines. Adults older than 60 with certain risk factors should receive a hepatitis B vaccine. All other adults 60 and older may receive the series. Hepatitis A vaccines are not routinely recommended for most adults. It is important to consider your individual health status, allergies, and potential interactions with existing medications. Ask your primary care provider or pharmacist which vaccinations make the most sense for your specific health needs. To find a provider near you, visit iuhealth.org/ primarycare.

A WELLNESS CHALLENGE FOR OUR COMMUNITY Writer / Scott Fussell Photography Provided

“Why am I so tired?”

“Set a goal. Stress. Achieve. Repeat. That’s what I do.”

“I can’t believe I just barked at my son like that. Why am I so edgy?” “No way I’m going to make the game. He’ll understand. “Only had my C game today. Hope Always does.” it was enough for them to sign.” “Something’s missing. We aren’t “I’ll pick up something on the way as close as we used to be.” home. They won’t miss me.” “Great job out there, but early in “The money’s great, but there’s got the game you should’ve…” to be something more.” “I just don’t get it. Why are they “I don’t understand why my so much happier than me?” daughter struggles. We’ve given her everything.” 14 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

If you’ve said, heard or felt any of these statements, you’re not alone. You just may not know it. We as a community are often hesitant to say these things out loud, or reflect on the short- and long-term impact. In communities like ours, many feel enormous pressure for friends, neighbors, fellow church members and coworkers to think we’ve got everything completely together. Smart, vibrant and entrepreneurial are three of the adjectives marketers use to describe our community. We’d love to add introspective, brave, authentic and connected to that list. At The Shift Initiative, we’re built to shift the way people think, talk, act and care about mental health and wellness. What’s that look like for our community? What can you do right now? Here are 10 things you can do immediately to make the shift.

1. EMBRACE REALITY. Times, people and needs change. We can’t rely on what we’ve always done. Talk to your kids, loved ones and friends. Ask questions, listen actively, take a parenting or communications class, shift your approach and watch your relationships grow.

2. MAINTAIN A TEAM ATTITUDE.

Our schools, local practices and area nonprofits all offer incredible resources. You’re not in this alone. Be brave enough to lean on their expertise.

3. THINK LIKE A MULTI-SPORT ATHLETE.

Wellness requires a multifaceted approach. Nourish your mind, body, spiritual and relational health.

When it comes to her banking, Katie’s a Farmer. Katie Douglas-Poe Customer Since 2021

4. KEEP IT SIMPLE.

Ten minutes of yoga. Two minutes of breathing. Hydration. Rest. For some, it can be that simple. As Glennon Doyle says, “When feelings are big, think small.”

5. GET OUTSIDE.

Need to get grounded? Spend time outside. Visit a park. Take a hike. Literally lay on the ground. Seriously.

6. GET OUTSIDE… OF YOURSELF.

Fifty percent of Americans suffer from isolation and loneliness. What can you do to prevent it? Connect. Share. Serve. Listen.

7. EXTEND GRACE.

Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Choose kindness always.

8. EXTEND THAT SAME GRACE TO YOURSELF.

Would you let someone talk to a loved one the way you sometimes talk to yourself? Absolutely not. Turn off the negative talk track that’s on a loop between your ears.

9. SHIFT YOUR PERSPECTIVE.

We have choices. Choose to see and say the greatness all around you.

10. TELL YOUR STORY.

Being honest with ourselves and being willing to share our stories is essential. We’ll never truly be “Stigma-Free Fishers” until I’m able to tell you about my son or daughter’s anxiety and depression as easily as you tell me about your kiddo tearing his ACL at soccer last week. Over the past few years we’ve shared our story a lot. One thing we’ve learned and taken great comfort in is realizing we’re not alone…far from it. Of the playlist above, our primary challenge to you is to tell your story openly, honestly and unfiltered. You’ll be amazed by the stories, connection and support you receive in return. For more information, details on speaking engagements, or programming opportunities, contact Scott Fussell at scott@ shiftinitiative.org, or follow The Shift Initiative on Facebook, Instagram, X, and Threads.

CRUCIAL COUNSELING

MINDFIT COUNSELING IMPLEMENTS RESEARCH-BASED PRACTICES Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Ron Wise

The mission of MindFit Counseling is to provide collaborative care through advanced and progressive modalities that treat the whole person. The team of highly trained, licensed therapists work with all ages to address issues and develop strategies to get back on the path of a happy and successful life. Services offered include individual and marriage counseling, play and art therapy, brainspotting, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and psychiatry/medication management.

trained in EMDR, brainspotting, or both therapies. EMDR uses vision to help people renegotiate trauma, and is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms of emotional distress caused by a disturbing experience. Brainspotting processes traumas by having an individual visually focus on a spot, which stimulates the uncovering of thoughts and paves the way to healing.

Cannon, who is a veteran, is a proponent of brainspotting. In her practice she sees Owner Jessica Cannon has built the practice teenagers, but especially enjoys working around innovative modalities that are based with veterans. MindFit hosts many master’s-level interns, and Cannon trains them in brainspotting. She feels that an excellent therapist is attuned to their clients. Being cognizant of when a patient’s breathing picks up or slows down, and other physical cues, is a skill that can be taught. Although MindFit does not accept insurance for marriage or couples counseling, it does work with major insurance companies for all other types of therapy. To request an appointment, a form can be accessed on the practice’s website.

The website has valuable information such as frequently asked questions, resources that include recommended books with links to Amazon.com, physical and mental health website links, plus a blog with beneficial and informative articles. It also explains the different types of therapy offered. “I wish more people knew the existence of the modalities we use,” Cannon says. “Everyone is different in what works for them and there are other options than talk therapy. Our goal is to help you find healing in the most effective way possible.”

CARMEL RESIDENT OFFERS SKIN CARE EXPERTISE THE SKIN IS THE BODY’S LARGEST ORGAN — AND CARMEL RESIDENT DR. MELANIE KINGSLEY BELIEVES EVERYONE NEEDS TO HAVE AN EFFECTIVE SKIN CARE REGIMEN. However, for a long time, she couldn’t bring herself to wholeheartedly endorse any products out there. So, the board-certified and fellowship-trained dermatologist founded SkinTherapyMD, which operates out of Zionsville and manufactures her own formulations for treating the most common skin care concerns. “Throughout my career as a dermatologist, the two most common concerns I heard from patients were about acne and how to slow or reverse the aging process,” Dr. Kingsley said. “After years of trying different products and various treatment regimens, I just wasn’t satisfied with the options available. That’s why I created the CAMU skin care lines — natural, high-quality skin care products that are effective, simple to use, free of unnecessary chemicals and gentle on the skin.”

by combining the most effective ingredients into one formulation to give patients the desired results. “Both regimens consist of two simple steps — an exfoliating pad to help remove the dead skin cells and allow the nutrients into the skin; and then a serum to deliver and seal in the essential ingredients,” Dr. Kingsley said. “It is the power duo.” The CAMU ClearSkin Bundle is now available with the serum and wipes — with or without a cleanser. And the CAMU Anti-Aging Bundle is now available with the resurfacing pads and moisturizing serum — with or without the gentle hydrating cleanser. “It’s been so rewarding developing this skin care line and seeing the benefits it has brought to so many people,” Dr. Kingsley said.

These products use ingredients Dr. Kingsley found to be most effective across nearly 20 years of treating patients.

Dr. Kingsley stands by these products professionally and personally, offering them not only to patients but also using them to treat friends, family and herself.

CAMU ClearSkin is specifically targeted toward acne-prone patients with oily skin, clogged pores or inflamed acne bumps. The product line helps treat acne, exfoliate the skin and seal in hydration while promoting a healthy skin barrier.

SkinTherapyMD is continually updating formulations and adding products for all skin types, which are available for customers to purchase as needed or on a monthly subscription basis. These products can be found online at skintherapymd.com or in local medical spas and dermatology offices as they expand throughout 2024.

CAMU Anti-Aging helps slow and reverse the signs of sun damage and aging, lightens brown spots and softens fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps adult acne, rosacea and keratosis pilaris and reduces the visibility of pores. Both the CAMU ClearSkin and CAMU Anti-Aging lines remove several steps from your skin care routine

THEY’VE GOT THE TOUCH THE TEAM AT REVIVE SALON & SPA STUDIO FOCUSES ON A NATURAL APPROACH TO AESTHETICS Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Ron Wise

When Leslie Wright was at a career crossroads, she prayed about what to do. She wanted to feel a sense of community, help people feel better and revive people’s souls. She felt a strong calling and opened Revive Salon & Spa Studio in 2006 in Noblesville. Since then, the salon has grown from a one-employee operation to a pillar of the small-business community. “I had some things falling apart regarding where I was working,” Wright says. “I was working for other people and it just wasn’t working out. I knew I wanted to open my salon and pour into the community.” Revive Salon offers men’s, women’s and children’s hair services, facials and waxing, hair extensions, permanent makeup,

22 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

massage therapy and more. Wright says her salon is focused on a natural approach to aesthetics, so customers won’t find injectables such as Botox at Revive Salon. “We focus more on things like microneedling and microdermabrasion peels so your body can heal naturally, without putting foreign substances into the body,” Wright says. “As far as massage therapy, we offer relaxation, deep tissue, cupping, hot stone, and prenatal massages.” Wright says she feels the team at Revive has a unique opportunity to touch clients’ lives. She says just coming into the salon can sometimes be the highlight of a client’s week, and she wants to ensure they always have the best experience.

She says she works on building relationships within the community as well. “One way we do that is to give back in whatever ways we can,” Wright says. “Everyone always tells me I’m a connector. I try to link people to see how we can improve our community. We also have a boutique in the salon called Revived Threads, where we sell Revive gear. The proceeds go back into the community in different ways to help women.” Traditionally, bustling beauty salons serve as a way for people to join together and share culture. Revive Salon is more than just a place where people can get a haircut or a new hairstyle. Wright says the salon serves as a way for people to learn about others and build relationships.

Wright says the staff at Revive Salon are constantly learning and evolving to reflect the ever-changing industry. She brings in educators every few months and works with her staff to ensure they meet their own career goals and dreams. She says they support not only the local community, but each other as well. Revive Salon also offers what Wright calls Style Labs for parties of five to 12 at no cost. The session teaches clients tips like how to curl their hair with a flat iron. They also provide a chair massage, ultraviolet skin analysis and a hair consultation. “People can call us and we can coordinate a date for the event,” Wright says. “I do try to respect my staff ’s time because work-life balance is a huge focus for us. They also receive discounts on products purchased that night or services booked during the event.” Revive Salon is located at 16095 Prosperity Drive, Suite 400 in Noblesville. HEALTH SPOTLIGHT

What women need to know about heart disease THERE ARE MULTIPLE RISK FACTORS. There are several common risk factors that contribute to heart disease in both men and women. These include age, diet, genetics and other coexisting conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Smoking, lack of physical activity, obesity and high-stress levels also heighten the risk substantially.

Dr. Sujoy Phookan Writer / Dr. Sujoy Phookan, cardiologist at IU Health North and Saxony Hospitals

February is American Heart Month, an annual observance that encourages people across the country to focus on their cardiovascular health and live a more hearthealthy lifestyle. Historically, there has been a misconception that heart disease primarily affects men. However, the truth is starkly different. Heart disease, including coronary artery disease, is the leading cause of death among women globally, surpassing all forms of cancer combined. It is important to know the risk factors and recognize the symptoms of heart disease in women.

Conditions unique to women, including pregnancy complications, such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and preterm delivery, can increase the likelihood of heart disease later in life. Other conditions that predominantly affect women, such as breast cancer and autoimmune diseases, also increase the risk. Additionally, post-menopause, when estrogen levels decline, women’s risk of heart disease rises.

and adopt a heart-healthy diet which limits processed carbohydrates, excess sugar and saturated fats, while including plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein. Smoking cessation and stress management are also highly encouraged. Everyone should see their primary care physician yearly for routine screenings and discussion of their heart disease risk factors. Women should discuss any of their female-specific risks with their provider. Anyone who has significant concerns about heart disease can ask for a referral to a cardiologist.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE. By fostering awareness, advocating for gender-specific research and treatment strategies, and promoting healthy lifestyle choices, we can strive towards a future where heart disease no longer claims the lives of our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends prematurely.

YOU MAY NEED TO ALTER YOUR LIFESTYLE. Addressing the risk factors of heart disease involves a multifaceted approach. Everyone should strive to get regular aerobic exercise

KNOW THE SYMPTOMS. Coronary artery disease and heart attacks often present with chest pain in both women and men. However, women also frequently present without chest pain and experience subtler symptoms, such as shortness of breath, nausea, back or jaw pain and fatigue, among others. These atypical symptoms can lead to misdiagnosis or delayed treatment.

OWNER OF IRON SHARPENS IRON STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING who, for whatever reason, want to improve health and athleticism, whether they were athletes in the past who still like training that way, or their job requires it, or just to improve overall health,” Gunn says. Gunn adds that what sets him apart in his coaching is the mentorship and discipleship that he provides to his clients.

Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Rob Gunn, owner and operator of Iron Sharpens Iron Strength and Conditioning, believes in helping his clients as much as he possibly can. He says it’s always been that way. “I work out of The Weight Room out of the Hamilton County Sports Complex,” Gunn says. “My main focus is fifth-grade athletes and up. My athletes play an array of sports including baseball, football, volleyball, soccer, lacrosse, basketball, rugby and tennis.” Gunn helps them become better athletes. “I also work with a number of adult clients 30 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

“The idea of the business was a long time in the making, and it is a true testament to who God is and what he is capable of doing in his timing,” Gunn says. “The name of my business comes from Proverbs 27:17: ‘As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.’ This basically means that by bettering yourself, you can make others around you better. I try to use every session or opportunity with the clients that I have to make it the best and most encouraging hour of their day. I treat them as people first and athletes second.” Gunn says he cares about creating better humans, not just physically, but in all aspects of their lives. He isn’t just spending time with his clients in the weight room. He is cheering them on at their sporting events and in other aspects of their lives. “It goes beyond the weight room for me,” Gunn says. “It boils down to the relationships that are built. First off, I want to see how what we are doing in the weight room translates to their field of sport. I want to see if we need to make adjustments to the training, etcetera. More importantly, it’s to let these kids know that they matter to me,

and what they love matters. I try to see at least one game for every athlete that I work with. I’ve also attended birthday parties, family functions, graduation parties, and I hope to one day attend college graduations, weddings, etcetera. That’s how deep I see some of these relationships going.” During football season, for instance, Gunn can be found at a different high school game every Friday night, rooting on the kids he works with, and being an active, positive presence in their lives. “My wife, Kelly, calls it the countywide football tour,” Gunn says. “We normally make a family night out of going to the games of the kids that I work with. My whole family is invested in these kids and they love them too. One of the coolest things to see is how much of an impact my athletes have on my 10-year-old son, Zane. It’s a cycle of mentorship that trickles down to him.” Gunn has also worked in law enforcement. “I was in law enforcement for about 15 years, and that time was split between Indiana and Florida,” he says. “I worked for the Hamilton County Sheriff ’s Office in corrections, where I held the rank of sergeant, and was an assistant commander of their security emergency response team tactical unit. Then I worked for Lee County Sheriff ’s Office in Fort Myers, Florida, where I worked patrol, and then was promoted to detective in their vice, intel, and narcotics unit, and worked criminal

street gangs. Physical fitness became a passion for me because I always thought of it as something that the job required of me. Also, if there was any opportunity where I could help other officers, I was going to do it. Again, iron sharpens iron.” Gunn opened his business in August 2020, and has been thriving since then. He also offers help to athletes who can’t afford his fees, and will never turn a kid away based on their financial situation, if they truly want to work hard and improve their lives.

I T A

25 YEAR G S N

Gunn has nothing but praise for his family members, who have helped him tremendously. “I want to thank my wife, Kelly,” he says. “Without her, this would still just be a dream. I also want to thank my daughter, Peyton, who competes in Olympic weightlifting and shares in my passion for strength and conditioning. I also want to thank my son, Zane, who play-stars team,

which I also have the privilege to help coach. They all play a unique role in this ministry. We all spend time at the gym together as it’s a passion for all of us. My athletes and their families get to know my family, and I’m blessed by the fellowship and relationships that have been formed since we started this.” Iron Sharpens Iron is located at 9625 East 150th Street, Suite 106 in Noblesville. “Based upon my scheduling availability, I have offered ‘scholarships’ to kids whose parents just can’t afford it or are in a tough season,” Gunn says. “I can see they have the need and desire to get better, or maybe they just need someone other than mom and dad to encourage them and be a trusted and encouraging adult in their life. If that’s the case, I basically waive their fees and train them for free, but I don’t technically have a scholarship in place to offset that. If it’s a fit

and money is the only thing holding them back, it’s not about the money to me.”
