Stay HerE grow HERE Noblesville An initiative led by The City of Noblesville Economic Development

Exciting Growth for Noble Industries in Noblesville The current 70,0000-squarefoot facility will now undergo a major expansion. Noble Industries announced in March that the company has purchased five acres to the south of its building and will expand with an additional 52,400 square feet. This growth will represent 39,000 square feet of warehouse space and 13,400 of office space. With this additional capacity, Noble Industries is positioned to become one of the city’s largest manufacturing employers with an anticipated addition of 50 new jobs.

The Stay Here Grow Here Initiative led by Noblesville Economic Development has showcased, through this Business Spotlight, the growing and expanding businesses that are leading big commerce in our community.

Who is Noble Industries

Incorporated in 1970, Noble is a full service metal fabrication company. Noble manufactures metal parts and products for many industries including automotive and automotive after-market, retail point of purchase, medical, industrial, lawn and garden and more. Visit a Lowes Home Improvement store, and the metal holding most of the signage was made at Noble Industries.

Noblesville is Ideal for Noble Industries

William Parker, founder, and his children Brenda Parker Snyder and Greg Parker are all lifelong residents of Noblesville. The culture of Noblesville fits the Parkers’ philosophy of “work hard and also enjoy life.” Noblesville is close enough to draw talent from Indianapolis, Anderson and other surrounding communities targeting professionals with metal fabrication experience. The city of Noblesville and Noblesville Schools understand the need to develop a workforce for manufacturing.

Noblesville Offers Great Qualities for Business

With Noblesville located in the middle of Indiana with easy access to the greater Indianapolis area, close proximity to 1-69, SR37, SR31 and I-65, product can be moved easily to any location in the United States. The City of Noblesville is strategic in its role as a forward-thinking city. This makes the business climate good for working together and moving the economy forward.

Noblesville Has Great Qualities for Noble’s Workforce

Noble Industries employs 65 full-time and 20 temporary staff. The community which surrounds the work environment is attractive and provides a benefit to the Noble workforce. Lunch time and after work shopping and restaurants are close and offer variety. There is a great parks system and golf courses for gatherings after work and on weekends.

it’s bedtime in noblesville Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger . Photography provided

Throw on your pajamas, slippers and robe and grab your pillow and blanket. The Darlington Bed Race kicks off Summer 2016 with Noblesville Main Street’s First Friday event. Presented in partnership by the Boys and Girls Club of Noblesville, the Noblesville Parks and Recreation Department and Noblesville Main Street, the slumber party starts at 7 p.m. Friday night June 3 on the downtown square in Noblesville. The race benefits the Boys and Girls Club of Noblesville and the Noblesville Parks and Recreation to provide youth summer

camp scholarships for those in need to attend their programs.

people in our downtown and raises money for a great cause.”

This is the third year the race has been featured as a main attraction of a Noblesville Main Street First Friday. Chris Owens, Executive Director of Noblesville Main Street, says, “This is such a great example of collaborative efforts and teamwork to benefit the Boys and Girls Club in our historic downtown. I’m pleased to be one small part of a great team creating opportunities for youth in our community. This is one of my favorite events of the summer because it really defines Noblesville with a fun event involving many

Abby Rinehart, Unit Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Noblesville, says, “The Bed Race came about through a longstanding partnership between the Boys and Girls Club of Noblesville and the Noblesville Parks and Recreation Department. The two organizations are a natural fit, and we had teamed up on multiple events prior to the Bed Race. Always wanting to go above the bar from the last event, both groups wanted to try something fun, a little off the wall and most importantly family-friendly.”

6 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / MAY 2016 / atNoblesville.com

The event was a perfect fit for a Noblesville Main Street First Friday because the focus of NMS is to promote a “hipstoric” and vibrant downtown area through special events and programs. Owens explains, “Hipstoric is all about honoring the past and embracing new trends with people, places and experiences.” The race will definitely make for a “hipstoric” event. Teams of four or five people race their heavy beds on wheels through a challenging course that includes maneuvering through a tight turn around a cone. Teams are encouraged to design and decorate their beds with a theme and dress in costumes with their chosen theme. Teams have chosen themes as wacky as Kroger dressing up as grocery items like bacon and eggs to a Mario Kart theme and a professional wrestler theme. Most of the teams are from Noblesville or the surrounding area, Rinehart says. “Since the inaugural race, we’ve had three teams

return each year for battle. The first team ever was a group of grads that had been school friends. Their team name changes with their theme for that year. They’ve won three out of the four years. These guys have really showcased the athleticism needed to win the race. Noblesville Young Life has also been with us from the beginning and were our inaugural champs. They always bring a great group of kids and maintain the positivity and sportsmanship.” Come out and cheer your favorite team on to bedtime supremacy. Mike Hoffmeister, Assistant Director of the Noblesville Parks and Recreation Department, says you may want to get there early as last year’s crowd was around 400 people, and they expect more this year. You can register to race today by going to bgcni.org or call 317-773-4372. The entry fee for teams with a borrowed bed is $100 and $75 for teams bringing their own bed.

#GETINVOLVED Pippa Mann is used to attracting attention for her athleticism rather than for the color of her clothing or race equipment. That all changed back in 2014 when she formed her partnership with Susan G. Komen. Mann was inspired initially to change her decadelong red and yellow helmet to pink with the intent of donating it as a fundraiser for the Komen Central Indiana auction.

title sponsorship of the car, they are gifting their most valuable real estate away, but it has also opened doors to include so many more individuals and companies who all had the same desire to create awareness of the fight against breast cancer.

Mann says, “This program is not an easy one to put together each year, but it’s an incredibly rewarding program to put But realizing the Indianapolis 500 was, in together and be a part of, and I could Mann’s words, “a massive national sporting not do any of this without the incredible event,” she and her team owner, Dale support from my team Dale Coyle Racing. Coyne, presented their idea to Komen’s They are a massive part of being able to national organization. By the time they were make this happen.” done, they created a unique partnership that involved Team Coyne and Mann donating At first, Mann was concerned about standing the entire title sponsorship of the car, out saying, “I have never been the girl in pink everything from the helmet to racing gear, at the race track. I never wanted to stand out and the race car became pink. in that way,” she said. However, she noticed that fans would wait outside her garage to For a team owner to basically gift the entire share their personal stories with her.

“I started to learn so much more about this color that I always eschewed,” Mann said. In the first year of the partnership, she was worried whether her fans would understand that this was not a “sponsorship,” that they were not taking money from a charity to run a race car. But much to Mann’s surprise, the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. “We have so many survivors, co-survivors and those that have lost loved ones reaching out to me each year. It’s been an incredible experience.” As the program has evolved, the “Get Involved” campaign was created last May when fans did not connect with her original online campaign, “Race with Pippa.” Mann explains that the “Get Involved campaign connects fans through an Indiegogo crowd funding platform which allows them to purchase specific items in support of the racing program.” Mann notes that this allows funds to be raised to donate to Komen.

Writer / Lynda Thies . Photographer / Polina Osherov

The most impactful part of the program was giving people the opportunity to place the names of loved ones in the cockpit of the racing car with Mann. “Climbing in on race day last year surrounded by all of those special people was a pretty incredible experience for me personally, and both of those items are things we want to bring back for 2016.” With these two campaigns combined, they

have raised over $100,000 with the Get Involved Campaign generating $61,000. The goal for 2016 is to raise $100,000 which Mann feels nervous about but excited, and at the same time, she feels confident they can accomplish this goal because they have more people supporting the partnership than ever before.

G. Komen logos on our racing car, but for many smaller businesses the entry price point of true sponsorship on an IndyCar is just too high. We still wanted to find a way to harness this support and get these companies involved in the racing program.” Ideas were brainstormed, and the Pink Car Collective concept was developed.

“We spoke to many people who wanted to get involved in helping keep the pink Susan

The concept was to offer sponsorship opportunities that would allow companies to become part of the racing program and support this pink car on the track while selecting what other opportunities are important to them. This might be VIP invites to the team dinner, suite tickets for the day or even entertaining clients on Carb Day.

Don’t let another Beat the Fallwithout Rush summer pass & Make your Backyard your dream backyard! Dreams a Reality

This unique partnership will offer other business-to-business opportunities for companies to connect with the other sponsors in the program. Mann works tirelessly to ensure the success of her partnership with Susan G. Komen year round and not just during the month of May.

Schools fill their heads with knowledge. Help us fill their tummies with food. One in four Hoosier children doesn’t have enough to eat – nearly 90,000 kids in Greater Indianapolis* alone. Gleaners Food Bank is trying to change that with our BackSacks Weekend Food for Kids program. But distributing a school year’s worth of weekend BackSacks in our entire service area comes with a cost of more than $2 million. Fundraising events like Wine Women & Shoes and its sponsors help pay for this program. Yet, they’re not enough. A gift of just $20 from you provides a child with a month’s worth of weekend BackSacks. And a $100 gift provides him or her with an entire semester’s worth. Please help us fund this worthy program by making a donation today at gleaners.org

Their driver for the Indy 500 last year was Bryan Clauson of Noblesville who is doing something completely crazy. In fact, the name of his racing quest this year is “The Chasing 200 Tour: Circular Insanity.” Clauson, who is driving for Jonathan Byrd’s Racing again this season, is scheduled to drive in 200 races in 2016. “It is ambitious, but it’s a dream of Bryan’s,” states David. “And he is literally on the track more than off and is doing quite well.” The Indy 500 should mark Clauson’s 65th race in his quest. Both drivers for Jonathan Byrd Racing are from Noblesville: Clauson and Conor Daly. Daly is the son of Derek Daly and Noblesville native Beth Blackburn. Jonathan Byrd Racing’s partner is the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, which is one of the top most-trusted brands in the country. The Byrd racing team is the only race team in the country to be partnered with one of the top five most trusted brands. For two weeks in May, the entertaining and networking for Jonathan Byrd’s customers and clients will be taking place alongside the straightaway at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. While the event is only two weeks long, the impact and connections made between Byrd guests may contribute to building a lasting legacy, much like what they have created for themselves. With their restaurants, weddings division, two conference centers and other catering locations, plus the presence at Camp Atterbury and Grand Park, Jonathan Byrd’s will serve over three million meals in 2016. The company projects that they will serve over four million meals in 2017. “We have to be one of the fastest-growing companies in Indiana, certainly one of the fastest growing food service companies,” shares David. Making connections and creating value with business relationships like those between Grand Park and Jonathan Byrd Hospitality and Restaurant Group represents what’s possible through a simple catering contract. “The initial conversations with Westfield TownePost.com / MAY 2016 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK

about a simple catering job for a ribboncutting ceremony is what has led to all that we are now doing at Grand Park,” says Kevin Manship, COO of Jonathan Byrd Hospitality and Restaurant Group. “You just never know.” The Jonathan Byrd Racing platform provides a business development tool for them. This provides Jonathan Byrd’s a

serious advantage over other companies in the same space. They are able to increase their brand profile in a way where they are more visible and linked to the Indy 500. This advertising platform is a win-win for companies wishing to make strategic relationships with other companies. “We have the ability to entertain clients at the IMS during the 500 and at other events

across the country,” says David. “We go about our racing sponsorships in a different way. We say, ‘Hey, we are going racing. We are investing in our brand. We’d like for you to do business with us and come along for the ride.’” For more information on Jonathan Byrd Racing, visit their Facebook page, follow them on Twitter and watch them race!

Jonathan Byrd’s Racing has successfully fielded 17 entries in the Indianapolis 500 beginning in 1985, scoring six top 10 finishes with a best finish of 5th in 2005.

In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.

The roster of Jonathan Byrd’s Racing Indy 500 drivers includes: Rich Vogler (‘85, ’86, ’87, ’88, ’89) Stan Fox (‘91, ’92) Gordon Johncock (‘91) Buddy Lazier (‘91, ’05) Scott Brayton (‘93) John Andretti (‘94) Davy Jones (‘95) Arie Luyendyk (‘96) Mike Groff (‘97, ’98) Jaques Lazier (‘01). A Jonathan Byrd’s Racing car currently holds the all-time Indianapolis 500 one- and four-lap qualifying records (Luyendyk ’96). Jonathan Byrd’s Racing has won two IndyCar races (Luyendyk – Phoenix ’96, Paul Jr. – Texas ’98), along with two United States Auto Club National Midget Championships (’86, ’87) and numerous regional and short-track championships in both midget racing and late model stock cars.

“What is one thing that kids can do to earn money?” asked Ollie Dunn, the daughter of comedian and financial planner Peter Dunn (aka Pete the Planner) to begin the Family Feud game between “The Lemony Crickets” and “The Pucker Doodles.” Gerry Dick, creator and host of Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick, was quick to hit his button with the reply, “Sell lemonade!” This was the top answer on the game board, and his team, The Lemony Crickets, team were quick to dominate the game. Gerry’s fellow team members included Mandy Selke, cofounder of Just Pop In; Leslie Bailey, The Adventuress for the Indy Star; and Mike Kelly, managing partner of DeveloperTown, who also hosted the event. The Lemony Crickets dominated the Family Feud game over rival team, The Pucker Doodles, who included team

members Nicole Misencik, Meteorologist for WTHR; Carly Swift, cofounder of Just Pop In; Matt MacBeth, cofounder of pi lab; and Clay Robinson, cofounder and owner of Sun King Brewery. “Game Show Night is always great fun with some really cool people, and best of all, it helps support young entrepreneurs,” says Gerry of the Lemonade Day Kick-Off Party. “In 1973, Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths to win the Triple Crown…which is a comparatively small margin when measured against the beating we took,” says Pucker Doodle teammate MacBeth. “It’s all in good fun for Lemonade Day.” Presenting sponsors of the event included Eleven Fifty Academy and J.D. Byrider. Officially, Lemonade Day is May 21 with registration now open online. “To get the most out of the experience, we encourage kids to register early,” shares Jami Marsh, Director of Lemonade Day TownePost.com / MAY 2016 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK

Greater Indy. “This allows our young entrepreneurs to get the most out of the digital curriculum available online.” “There is a role for everyone to play on Lemonade Day, whether you have kids participating or not, we want people out buying lemonade,” adds Marsh. “We’re excited for the chance to be involved in Lemonade Day,” shares Kelly. “Lemonade Day lights the entrepreneurial spark in students, teaches them what it takes to launch and grow a small business and illustrates how important it is to differentiate a product. That’s 100 percent congruent with what we do with our clients at DeveloperTown.” Lemonade Day is empowering today’s youth to become tomorrow’s entrepreneurs. The idea for Lemonade Day originated with Richmond, Indiana, native Michael Holthouse who now lives in Houston. Holthouse approached Scott Jones in 2010, and Jones then licensed the idea for

Greater Indianapolis in 2010. Since 2010, Lemonade Day has grown in popularity, inspiring young entrepreneurs across the state. Community Champions are selected to mentor the efforts of those participating and encourage young entrepreneurs in their lemonade endeavors. There are many kids who do this year after year as a tradition and host their own lemonade stand frequently throughout the warm weather months, regardless of prizes. “This is what we want – kids to start with a lemonade stand, and who knows what that may lead to? Many

successful entrepreneurs talk about having lemonade stands when they were kids,” shares Marsh. “Participating in Lemonade Day with fellow Indianapolis ambassadors is truly a highlight of the year!” states Mandy Selke. “Even if entrepreneurship is not a child’s path, the education, experience and engagement inspires for a more enriched childhood!” This year, the Community Champions are John Wechsler, serial entrepreneur and founder of the co-working space Launch

This year’s Mom of the Year is Pam Melfi, a Noblesville mother of four and grandmother of 12. It was a beautiful April day when we spoke, and I walked up her daughter’s driveway to find her playing on a swing set with five of her grandchildren and one of her daughters. I had no idea that just a half hour from that moment, I’d be learning about what made this strong and inspiring woman deserve such an award.

Pam Me l f i

A single mom, Pam raised three girls, Jill, Amy and Lyndsay, and one boy, David. She worked two jobs and made it clear that they didn’t have much growing up. But as we were joined in conversation by her other two daughters, they all made it a priority to say that she never once complained or made them feel unimportant.

atNoblesville.com / MAY 2016 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 25

“My kids were easy to raise. They’ve always been really great kids,” Pam said. “I can’t take all the credit though because I have a very strong faith, and God helped me raise these kids to the way they are today.” Many reasons contribute to why Pam was chosen to be the Mom of the Year 2016, but one reason that stuck out was that when her oldest daughter, Jill, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 without any previous history of cancer in the family, Pam stepped up as what all her daughters described as the matriarch of the family. “I think the cancer brought us all closer, and we’re already a pretty strong unit,” Pam explained. “I had to be strong for [ Jill],” she said, but then quickly added, “though she was strong herself.” Following the diagnosis, the whole family got tested to see if they were cancer carriers. The only carrier was Lyndsay. Upon learning this, she went through a double mastectomy in 2011 in an attempt to protect herself from breast cancer. At the time, Lyndsay had two young sons, one a newborn. While recovering, she couldn’t pick up either of her sons or take care of them at all, so Pam decided to make a sacrifice and move in with her daughter to help care for her family. “She literally stepped in and was the mother to my children,” Lyndsay said. “And this was for about five weeks. I had several surgeries after because I had issues with my implants, so she

actually had to move in with me three or four more times after the first time too.” And just when I didn’t think this woman could go through any more hardships, Pam revealed that she lost her first son, Tommy, when he was 18 months old. She said that this event really made her appreciate the kids she has now and willed her to be the best mother she could be day in and day out. “I always knew I wanted kids. I always wanted to be a mom,” Pam said. “I didn’t care about a career or anything else. I just wanted to be a mother.” The family told of many childhood memories where their mom taught them right from wrong without making them feel like they were “lower class citizens.” Pam always tried to treat them as equals and listen to what they had to say. Throughout the entire conversation and while her daughters praised her endlessly, Pam acted very humble. She gave credit to God, her daughters and any other outside force other than herself most of the time. Pam Melfi is a selfless woman, mom and grandmother who has been a rock to her children and so many other people. More than deserving of the honor of being Mom of the Year, she made it a point to say, “It’s just what moms do.”

UNIFICATION SPOKESMAN MITCH BONAR IS IN DEMAND coordination and balance. Specifically, CP affects the part of the brain that controls muscle movements. At the age of 15, the Bonars learned through biopsies that Mitch also had a very rare disorder known as mitochondrial dysfunction, which causes muscle weakness. An avid sports fan, it seemed that his dreams of participating in high school athletics were beyond reach. “I see myself as a comeback story,” Mitch says with a confident smile. It’s the same smile he wears everywhere he goes. It radiates from a place of tenacity. He is no stranger to overcoming obstacles and beating the odds.

He is an in-demand speaker, an ambassador, spokesperson, a president, a coach, a mentor and highly visible national leader spreading the power of unification within the public school system. Not to mention he graduated from Noblesville High School just last year. At 19 years old, Mitch Bonar has turned the world around him upside down in a way that can only come from the inside out. “It is amazing because he was a kid that used to walk through the hallways with an aide, and no one knew his name,” says Kelly Bonar, Mitch’s mother. “From doing nothing to traveling, fundraising and speaking; if we would have planned this for him, we would have messed it all up. We see it as God is in control of this.” Around the age of 4, Mitch was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP), a group of neurological disorders that appear in infancy or early childhood and permanently affect body movement, muscle

Before being a youth ambassador at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles and collaborating with 150 other youth on how to make the world more unified and accepting, Mitch was bullied. “Bullies is a big one,” he says. “I once was left on a golf course all by myself, not knowing where to go, by people who I thought were my friends.” The years leading up to graduation were filled with many aides, physical therapy and frequent moments where Mitch says he walked the halls with his head down. Yet something remarkable happened his sophomore year that forever changed the course of his life. “My athletic story started when the Indiana High School Athletic Association and the Special Olympics decided to work together and start a Unified Sports program," he says. "We brought it to Noblesville.” Unified Sports® was first developed by Special Olympics as a means of providing a quality experience of sports training and competition in an inclusive environment that allows friendships to form. It is the vision of this joint IHSAA / Special Olympics Indiana (SOIN) sports project to atNoblesville.com / MAY 2016 / NOBLESVILLE MAGAZINE / 27

allow high school students with and without intellectual disabilities to collectively represent their high school in an IHSAAsanctioned activity by participating together on a Unified Sports® team. For the first time in history, athletes of all abilities had the opportunity to compete and represent their schools statewide. Mitch did more than compete; he led his team, and they won. They made the Unified Sports State Championship two times in a row. As his athletic prowess grew, he no longer needed physical therapy. Each practice built a stronger sense of self and even greater ability to connect to teammates who eventually became family. “People looked at me differently. I became friends and was able to fit in. I am a people person and enjoy spending time and talking to people. I enjoy getting to know people on different levels.” His success on the field translated into accolades and opportunity off of it as well.

As President of the Hamilton County Athletic Council for Special Olympics, he leads the charge in fundraising and awareness towards more unification programs. His senior year, he was the manager of the Noblesville High School Football team. Presently Mitch is one of the assistant track coaches where his sister Tori is a member of the team’s roster. “As my coach, it’s neat because I was on the team with him, and this year with all the new people coming in, it’s cool that he’s still there,” says Tori. “We have experienced people that know how to run the team, especially Mitch because he knows how important it is.” After taking the stage at the NHS graduation as a chosen speaker, Mitch turned to slip his arms into his letterman’s jacket. The crisp leather, detailing around the cuffs, bold colors – it is a jacket of honor. In that moment standing there in front of his peers, sharing the treasures of a journey

of perseverance, it is awe-inspiring to see how far he has come. Yet the remarkable thing is that he is just getting started. When he speaks, he does so from the inside, from a place of personal experience. His innate ability to connect with others and inspire them to be more is what causes his desire for more unification to become a reality. “I love speaking in front of people. I get to speak at schools all across the state. I share about my life and how I was bullied. This program has allowed me to see who I really was and has been a blessing ever since. I mention about my disabilities and how those effected my life. I’ve met people who face challenges every time and help their school realize they are similar and not as different as they think they are." There is a lot swirling around Mitch: completing a Project WORK program, a

4-on-4 tournament at Purdue, prospecting colleges, finding a job, speaking at another school this week, quiet words of writing a book and even bigger dreams of giving a TED Talk. So much to share, so much to give that it is hard to remember he just graduated from high school. Regardless of what comes next, he is clear about the purpose of his life. “So far, I have been working hard. My dream is to follow wherever life puts me. To do whatever life calls me to do.”
