Koehler and her husband always knew they wanted to run a business in the entertainment industry, and they discovered through social media that Selfie WRLD was a franchise. With 30 locations around the country, the Midwest was still lacking, so they inquired about an Indianapolis location. Koehler had a career in news, and was looking for a change of pace that allowed for more flexibility. She felt Indianapolis was the right city for a selfie museum. At first they were told Indianapolis wasn’t available, but then a corporate representative called, and Koehler was able to take her next career step and rediscover herself in the process. They took the leap into entrepreneurial business ownership and opened the newest franchise location in January of 2022, capitalizing on slower months in the business world. They started the process of developing Selfie WRLD in June of 2021, and while they hit obstacles and hard times, they pushed through and were motivated to create a space like nothing else in Indianapolis.

Koehler sources a variety of props from Etsy, Amazon, eBay and others, to curate and elevate the experience. She loves flipping booths when they aren’t photographing well or if she just wants to switch it up. The space also has the capacity for events and private functions, with a separate party room.

Cities are always finding ways to change, adapt and grow, whether with economic development or cultural initiatives. People are always looking for something new to do. Indianapolis now has something that has never been seen in the city before - its first selfie museum, Selfie SelfieWRLD.WRLD is a DIY photo studio with more than 40 photo opportunities, equipped with ring lights and Bluetooth remotes upon entry. But this isn’t just your average photo studio backdrop. Selfie WRLD provides an elevated selfie experience, and guests can walk away with photos they can keep and share. The space is a permanent fixture located at 86th Street and Michigan Road, and Owner Nina Koehler is proud to run a business where everyone is happy and engaged with a space provided solely for creativity. She says she also loves being “close to all the doughnut counties in Indy,” and accessible from all major highways.

Koehler loves the balance of this new role and is now able to spend more time with her kids, work from home, and still maintain an engaging and energizing presence on-site. She has also been able to utilize skills from the news industry including social media, video and photography, to enhance the experience at Selfie WRLD. The business thrives on the shareability of social media and they love seeing how guests utilize the Selfiespace.WRLD creates and curates a space for positive creativity for all different age groups, from teenagers to college-aged adults - and even people Koehler wasn’t expecting, like professional photographers, realtors and families. There are 22 themed, 8’x8’ booths in the space along with murals and other backdrops, with themes ranging from an old-school diner to a retro phone backdrop with a neon sign. Some themes will stay up indefinitely and some will be switched out, depending on upcoming holidays or local events like the Indy 500.

Leerkamp continued riding lessons and made the transition to jumping. “The barn that I go to is a jumping barn,” she says. “When I first started, I would always watch other jumpers and I decided I wanted to stick with it until I became like one of them. After I learned the basics, I got to learn how to jump and I really loved jumping. It was really

For those who may not be familiar with a jumping competition, Leerkamp explains that a rider and horse jump between seven and 10 times in a normal course.

“My uncle sent me a birthday Groupon for my eighth birthday,” she says. “I loved it. I really loved the opportunity of getting to bond with an animal.”

For Leerkamp, the experience of jumping is like flying. “You’re just thinking about what you’re doing in the moment, but after, you realize how much it felt like you’re flying in the air,” she says. “It’s really amazing, the feeling that you connect with your horse over the jump, and it feels like flying.”

Leerkamp started taking riding lessons, and also learned about grooming and taking care of a horse. She believes grooming the horse helps the bond between rider and horse. The special bond is her favorite thing about being a rider. “It is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling to earn such a big animal’s trust and friendship,” she says.

Leerkamp’s hard work was recognized and she was invited to compete in the prestigious United States Hunter Jumper Association National Championships in Las Vegas in November of 2021. It is an honor for any rider to be invited to nationals.

Leerkamp enjoys when family and friends attend her competitions. “It’s really nice to have family there,” she says. “It helps a lot with your confidence. I love having people Leerkamp’sthere.”

advice to any young rider like herself who wants to take horseback riding lessons is to try to relax. Leerkamp says she learned a lot from other riders and enjoys passing on what she’s learned to beginning “Iriders.would say you just have to be comfortable and trust the horse, because the horse can feel anything that you sense,” she says. “They can sense your heartbeat. If you start to get stressed, they’ll start to get stressed.”

Leerkamp stays busy with riding and school, and manages to find time for fun with her circle of friends. She says she’s made many friendships with fellow riders and even encouraged a friend to take up riding.

Championship in the 15-and-under “Thatdivision.isthe award I am most proud of right now,” she says. “It was really unexpected after being invited to nationals. We were just happy to be there.” Leerkamp has a supportive family who encourages her love of riding and cheers her on at competitions. She’s also received training by equestrian professionals who’ve been instrumental to her success through the past four years. Leerkamp is especially thankful to her main trainer, Sandra Brady at Canterbury Manor Stables (where Leerkamp rides Rooster, aka Be Sorta Bad), as well as Deb Danner at Bit-Whip Farm, Emily Ahlfeld with the Interscholastic Equestrian Association team, and Emily Farmer from Keepsake Stables. Farmer accompanied Leerkamp to nationals and has been training Leerkamp on Idol of Kings since the nationals.

“Sometimes when you get into what you love and when you’re doing hard work, it will bring you places.”

A Look Back at Roberts Camera’s 65-Year Evolution

After operating as a catalog showroom for quite some time, Roberts eventually

started carrying cameras, thanks to a former employee’s interest in “Thephotography.firstperson that worked for my grandfather worked in the stock room, and he was also in high school,” Reinker says. “He was taking a photography class and my grandfather was trying to figure out what items he wanted to carry. There was a little page of Minolta cameras, and he said, ‘I think I could sell those.’ So that was the start of us bringing in a very small amount of cameras.”

According to Reinker, Roberts really came into its own as a camera store when Indy hosted the Pan American Games in “That1987. brought with it a lot of sports photographers and kind of put Indy on the national stage for a lot of things,” Reinker says. “But it also got us in front of photographers from Sports Illustrated, L.A. “We decided, ‘You know what? In this day and age we’d rather have one really strong retail location with the best staff in the business and a huge selection of product, as opposed to trying to have multiple locations,’” Reinker says. “All in all, we were able to get smarter about how we could operate more efficiently and better serve our customers with one centralized location in downtown Indy, along with more options from an e-commerce Althoughperspective.”Roberts closed the Carmel location, they were still able to maintain all of their previous Carmel employees, who add to an already-impressive Roberts Camera staff.

“There’s nothing we take more seriously than customer service,” Reinker says. “When people come in, we try to not only provide the most wonderful experience, but also product knowledge. Our field is unique because the product is specialized, so we focus on product knowledge and having people on staff who don’t only know and understand the technical side of the products, but are also photographers and love the craft.”

In reflecting on the 65th anniversary of Roberts Camera, Reinker ultimately attributes the camera shop’s sustained success to their ability to adjust with the “One of the biggest things I would attribute to us being able to continue to grow and remain relevant in this industry has been our ability to evolve and change,” Reinker says. “We’re not people that sit back and wait for things to happen. We try and be proactive and make changes we think will be right for the future, and I attribute that to my dad. My dad is really responsible for our growth over the last 40-plus years. He was never afraid to change or try new things, and he’s still with the business today.”

As the 2022-2023 school year begins, school spirit is running high throughout International School of Indiana (ISI). For the first time in its 28-year history, the school will welcome all ISI students, administrators and staff to one single location - the Michigan Road campus located on the near northwest side of Indianapolis.

It has taken more than 20 years of vision and planning to achieve this single-campus layout, culminating with the completion of the new, state-of-the-art Chen Family Lower School. The school will accommodate students aged 3 (pre-K) through fifth grade. Facilities include a working garden, greenhouse, playground, library, art studio, stage and gymnasium, as well as STEM labs.

ISI first opened its doors on September 1, 1994, to a student body of 38 students across four grades. Four years later ISI acquired 63 acres off of Michigan Road and began, in earnest, turning the property into a school campus. In 2002 ISI officially became an International Baccalaureate (IB) accredited school and two years later celebrated its first graduating class of eight seniors.

ISI’s IB program also requires all students in grades six through 12 to serve their community in some manner every school year. Students may work on specific projects, serve in clubs, or volunteer their time to improve their communities. All of each student’s work is reported and documented.

ISI’s Head of School Elizabeth Head sees the addition of the Chen Family Lower School as more than a single asset for the ISI campus. She sees the new school in a bigger picture. “We are celebrating this new building, but more than anything we are celebrating the global mindedness and internationalism for the state, and the fact that Indiana has a school like this where students are graduating with this type of skill set,” Head says. “For the state of Indiana, the school is a real highlight because it consolidates what Indiana’s priorities have been. It helps Indiana move forward into the future by continuing to support relocation of families, international recruitment, foreign investment, and a global and international mindedness for Hoosiers.”

ISI is the only school in the Midwest to offer the IB program to all students aged 3 through grade 12, with complete language immersion tracks in French, Spanish or Mandarin. “Indianapolis really has a gem,” Head says. “Very few states have what Indiana has by offering a truly international school for all grade levels to its residents.”

According to Head, ISI has two features further distinguishing the school as unique not only in Indiana, but also across much of the United States. First, ISI offers the full IB program to 100% of its students. Other schools tend to limit enrollment to gifted or advanced students. Second, in every grade, ISI’s language immersion teachers are native-speaking teachers.

The success of the IB program and ISI’s student population may be explained with a few statistics and numbers. “We’ve had 19 graduating classes in a row where 100% of our students have been accepted to four-year universities,” Head says. “On average, our graduates receive $150,000 to $200,000 in merit scholarships, and they are going into college with 30 university credits already earned.”

ISI currently has openings for the 20222023 school year in many grade levels and language tracks. “At ISI, new students can come in at any grade level with zero language ability outside of English, and we can accept them and put them into a language learning program so that they graduate with language ability,” Head says.

“Bringingarea.all these developments to the area, especially a corporate headquarters, is great for daytime traffic in the Broad Ripple area,” Ostrowski says. “Some of the retailers in the area struggle during daytime hours. Having more people in the area during the day brings the potential for more customers to local businesses.”

Broad Ripple Park leaders are currently working on bringing a new community center called the Broad Ripple Park Family Center to the Broad Ripple area. The master plan includes an estimated reinvestment of $65 million, targeted to stabilize and sustain existing park assets, create new program opportunities and features within the park, and build a more resilient, durable park.

“Over the last five years, apartments have started springing up across Broad Ripple, whereas before, many people had to find other areas like downtown to live,” Ostrowski says. “Currently, the apartments that are here are at around 95% occupancy, which tells you the demand for people wanting to live in the area is there.”
