CROSSROADS AIR SHOW RETURNS AT INDIANAPOLIS REGIONAL AIRPORT
he finest precision military jet demonstration team in the world will soon return to Indianapolis for the first time in more than a decade.
On October 28 and 29, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels will be featured in the Crossroads Air Show at the Indianapolis Regional Airport, alongside many other top aviation performers.
“This will be a rare treat,” says Michael Preyss, community engagement chair for the event. “The things that they can do behind the stick of a jet are truly remarkable.”
Additionally, the U.S. Special Operations Command parachute team, the ParaCommandos, will perform their highintensity free fall and canopy formations. Other performances include recordbreaking aerobatic pilot Rob Holland, the Redline jet team, the “Spanish Lady” T-6G Texan, and the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Red Tail Squadron, whose mission is to educate audiences about the history and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, America’s first black military pilots.
The event is all about pushing the limits of aviation in a way people don’t experience every day. Though it may still be neat to see a commercial aircraft fly overhead, Preyss
says there’s nothing like seeing these top-tier pilots.
“To see someone take their plane and make it just bend and whip around, and fall to the ground and not crash, all those things that they can do, it just looks so amazing,” Preyss says. “You’re really watching pilots push their airplanes to the limit of what they’re capable of, and then land on the ground and talk to you about it.”
In addition to the demonstrations, static displays will allow event-goers to experience aviation hands-on.
Above all, the goal of the airshow is fun. A

family fun zone will feature a bounce house and appearances from Freddy Fever and Boomer from the Pacers. A variety of food concessions will be available throughout the day.
The air show is hosted by the Crossroads of America Council, headquartered in Indianapolis, which oversees all Scouting programs across a region of 26 counties. All proceeds from the air show will benefit central Indiana Scouting, Riley Children’s Foundation and Catch the Stars Foundation.
Organizers also hope the event may inspire the next generation of pilots and other aviation professionals, especially during the industry’s current labor shortage.
“Every aspect of aviation needs more people to be interested and take it as a career pathway,” Preyss says. “I would say that’s true for both the civilian side and the military side.”
With the Federal Aviation Administration’s strict regulations on airplane maintenance, and fewer pilots, air traffic controllers and aircraft mechanics, Preyss says it is becoming harder to keep airplanes in the air.
Thanks to a grant from the Lilly Foundation, Crossroads is hosting a “Soaring Students” community day on Friday to get kids interested in aviation. Five hundred middle schoolers from the central Indiana region will have the opportunity to participate in STEM activities and ask questions at the airfield. Those with any interest in flight
school can learn about the different pathways at the Jet Access booth.
“I think it’s going to be a really special event,” Preyss says.
While aircrafts fly overhead, the economic impact of the event should be felt below.
Preyss says event organizers are expecting an $8.7 million economic impact from the air show. With around 30,000 attendees expected,
local hotels, restaurants and shops can expect an uptick in business.
Though Preyss says those who do not attend the event will be missing out, residents of north Indy might catch a glimpse of these historic aircrafts flying to and from the airfield.
As an aviation enthusiast, Preyss says he’s learned to come to airshows prepared. Plan to come early, stay late and be prepared for any kind of weather.
1901 E 46th St Indianapolis 317-600-3542 | @goldleafindy Full Service Espresso, Small Plates, Wine & Beer
“It’s not just looking up in the sky and watching the planes fly around,” Preyss says. “There’s lots of things to do on the ground. If there is a line for that thing you want to go do or that plane you want to go see, give yourself enough time so that you can come back later and do it.”
Gates open at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. Most flying will occur from noon until 4 p.m., but flying may take place all day.
The Indianapolis Regional Airport is located at 3867 North Aviation Way in Greenfield.
Tickets for the show are on sale now. General admission tickets are $10. Admission for Cub Scouts and children 5 and under is free. The cost for parking begins at $150 per vehicle and is not included in the price of the ticket. For more info, go to crossroadsbsa.org/crossroadsair-show.

PENCE MEDIA GROUP MAKES MARKETING, PUBLIC RELATIONS AND STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT A FULL-TIME FOCUS
“I can read from a teleprompter.”
Those were the words Nicole Pence Becker uttered to her husband, Jason, as they were discussing her next career move after she retired from her job as a TV news anchor.
A 2:30 a.m. wake-up call to anchor a daily two-hour morning show wasn’t going to work for Nicole, after welcoming twins and then a surprise third child less than 13 months later. The fourtime Emmy Award-winning journalist felt it was time to leave the career she loved to stay home for a bit - but then, what next?
With a supportive nudge from Jason, Nicole knew that she was capable of much more than reading from a teleprompter. As a journalist for over 13 years, Nicole loved to tell stories, listen to people, help them solve their problems, and celebrate their wins. She knew she wanted to reinvent herself.
“I was a new mother of three little boys, which was a lifechanging experience,” she says. “I am grateful I could stay home and flex for our little family, but I knew I would eventually want to use my rare and valuable skill sets to make an impact again.”
Nicole saw a need to disrupt the traditional consulting model by organizing a group of experienced women who want to work and also have the flexibility to put family first. Nicole founded Pence Media Group (PMG) in 2017. Pence Media Group is a full-service public relations, media and marketing consultancy, working with startups to Fortune 500s. Fast-forward to today, and PMG employs more than 15 women either full time or as consultants.
“Nicole has created a supportive and inclusive culture that embraces the diverse talents of women,” says Anna Carrera, a former TV reporter turned public relations professional who serves as PMG’s director of public relations. “We work as a team

to create solutions for our clients and tell their story. It’s a winwin for us all.”
Nicole’s entrepreneurial spirit and determination fueled the growth of the company. Pence Media Group continues to grow each year to serve more clients, attract incredible talent and earn prestigious awards. Most recently, PMG was honored with a MUSE Creative Gold Award for Best Small Agency of the Year in 2023, as well as three Pinnacle Awards and 12 Awards of Honor at the Public Relations Society of America Hoosier Chapter 2023 Pinnacle Awards.
“We run every project from concept through completion with an operating mantra of, ‘Consider it done,’” Nicole says. “It’s more than a tagline for us. It’s how we approach our work. PMG is solution oriented, and we are straight to the point. We don’t like to waste anybody’s time.”
Several of PMG’s clients are also women-owned businesses, including Sprouts Cooking School, Wright’s 360º Movement Academy, Indy Night Nanny, Indy Nanny Concierge, Pluie, and Tiffany Skilling Interiors. PMG celebrates these women and helps them scale their businesses through strategic public relations, marketing and media efforts. After utilizing PMG’s services for only a couple of months Tiffany Skilling, owner of Tiffany Skilling Interiors, says, “ I have gained so much time back! PMG never dismisses anything and takes the time to explore all potential opportunities. I am so thrilled with the hard work the PMG team is doing for me!”
In addition to leading the PMG team, Nicole’s ambitious nature led her to co-found a second business. While working to juggle work and mom life with now-four sons (Andrew, Colin, Matthew and Luke), Nicole struggled to find child care that was focused on the parent experience first. Nicole co-founded Indy Nanny Concierge with Morgan Friedman, a former educator and current professional nanny, to offer a solution for professional families seeking professional nannies. Indy Nanny Concierge helps dozens of Hoosier families each year.
“Women are capable of a lot, but you need to clearly know what you bring to the table and when it’s time to sit out,” Nicole says. “That’s why it’s crucial to step back and identify your unique skill sets and align them with your interests. I am honored to be able to give women the opportunity to feel accomplished in the workplace while also being present with their families. I take a lot of pride in our PMG team, and am confident our work speaks for itself through our client wins and our goals for the future.”

FRAME IT
THE GREAT FRAME UP HELPS TO PRESERVE, PROTECT, ENHANCE AND BEAUTIFY
Writer & Photographer / Michael Durr
Custom framing is an artful way to preserve and display your cherished memories, artwork and memorabilia. While it may be tempting to opt for off-the-shelf frames, custom framing offers a range of benefits that can significantly enhance the presentation and protection of your valuable items. The Great Frame Up, with locations in downtown Indy and Carmel, makes it easy for you to swing by and chat with their incredible staff to find what will work best for your piece.
“I love that I get to work with all kinds of items, from trophies and stones to rare works of art,” says Owner Tony McGuire. “We just never know what someone is going to bring to us. Every single item has a story that is fascinating in its own way. Connecting in person with customers about these stories, and then preserving these stories for future generations, is really a feeling that I can’t put into words. No joke - I’m not making this up just to sound good!”
Personalization and Aesthetic Appeal
One of the most compelling reasons to opt for custom framing is the ability to personalize your framing choices to match your unique style and preferences. With custom framing, you have the freedom to select the perfect frame style, matting and glass options to complement the artwork or item you wish to display. This level of personalization allows you to create a frame that not only protects, but also enhances aesthetic appeal.
14 / NORTH INDY MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2023 / TownePost.com
When you choose custom framing, you can select from a vast array of frame materials including wood, metal and acrylic, as well as an extensive range of finishes and colors. Custom frames are designed to enhance the visual impact of your items and create a focal point in your home or office.
PRESERVATION AND PROTECTION
Custom framing is not just about enhancing the appearance of your artwork or memorabilia. It’s also about preserving them for generations to come. When you invest in custom framing, you can choose archivalquality materials and techniques that provide superior protection against environmental factors that can cause deterioration such as ultraviolet light, humidity and dust. Museumquality, custom framing typically includes ultraviolet-protective glazing, acid-free matting and proper mounting techniques.
“When something is framed properly with the right materials, it will outlast your car, your furniture and yourself,” McGuire says.
TAILORED TO YOUR SPACE
Every space is unique, and custom framing allows you to tailor your framing choices to fit the dimensions and decor of your home or office. Off-the-shelf frames may not always come in the right size or style to complement your space, and you may find yourself compromising on the presentation of your cherished items.
Custom framing eliminates this problem by providing you with frames that are specifically designed to fit your chosen location. Whether you want to fill a large empty wall with a gallery of custom-framed artworks, or find the perfect frame for a small and intimate
TownePost.com / OCTOBER 2023 / NORTH INDY MAGAZINE / 15
space, custom framing ensures that your items are displayed in the most appealing and appropriate manner.
CONSERVATION OF VALUE
Certain items such as original artworks, limited-edition prints and collectibles can hold significant financial and sentimental value. Custom framing can play a crucial role in preserving the value of these items. A well-designed custom frame not only protects the item from damage, but also enhances its perceived value.
A UNIQUE AND MEMORABLE GIFT
As we approach the holiday season, custom framing can make for a thoughtful and memorable gift. Whether it’s a wedding photo, a diploma or a special piece of artwork, framing a meaningful item and presenting it as a gift can be a deeply personal gesture that will be both meaningful and unique.
“We’re locally owned and staffed by some very talented people,” McGuire says. “We all have
a passion for what we do, and it shows in our attention to detail and the time and care we take with each framed piece. The teams we have at both locations are some of the most creative and talented people I’ve ever met. They’re seriously the best group of people to work with, and I consider them all family.”
If you’re looking to enhance the beauty of your space, safeguard your valuable items or create a memorable gift, custom framing provides a tailored solution that allows you to fully appreciate and showcase your memories and belongings.

DESIG N BUILD
Loren Wood Builders is a seasoned design-build firm comprised of a team of 65+ talented and dedicated individuals who work in design, construction, and administrative roles. They are able to execute high-end, complex, and highly detailed residential and commercial projects.
“Other companies are designing and building houses, but there are very few who have this size team with the depth of talent that we have,” says Loren Wood, owner. “Having such a deep bench and large bandwidth in terms of team allows us to tackle some unique projects effectively and efficiently, in a way that some of the smaller teams might struggle with from a logistical standpoint.”
Bigger projects can come with more risks and unknowns. Wood’s team embraces the challenge of creating high-detail, high-finish projects.
“That’s what we like doing,” Wood says. “We don’t want to build the same thing over and over. We want to build unique, challenging, architecturally interesting projects.”
They offer full-service, design-build services, from architectural planning to interior design to project management. They can do it all.
“We run the whole range of architectural design offerings from basic architectural plans and elevations through to, and including, highly developed construction drawings with specifications, selections, decorations, and furniture design and procure ment,” says Wood, noting that everything is designed in 3D.
They utilize modern technology around the design space and have a highly curated design cycle to elicit ideas and details from the client, translating those into an efficient and effective design. They just launched a new website that details their process, team, and services; www.lorenwoodbuilders.com.
Loren Wood Builders services the Indianapolis, Bloomington, and south-central Indiana areas.
Loren Wood Builders not only focuses on the level of detail and the execution of the project, but they also care deeply about the client experience from beginning to end.
“Most people who are building a custom home are spending the most amount of money on a single item that they have ever spent on anything in their lives,” Wood says. “We want that process to be exciting, fun and engaging, rather than scary,

frustrating and upsetting.”
This means they don’t just focus on designing and constructing a house that looks nice and includes all the details and elements the client wants. They want the client to feel well-served, listened to, communicated with, cared for and engaged with throughout the entire process.
“The construction world is a messy environment with many variables, but we commit to doing our very best,” Wood says.
“We’re not perfect, but if problems arise, we wrap our resources and efforts around it, circling the wagons around the challenges and doing everything we can within our power to create good outcomes. Our reputation reflects that.”

CERESET CAN HELP YOUR BRAIN HELP YOU
“As we age, our brains respond differently,” says Cereset Tech Coach Susan Clouser. “Stress changes us. Life changes us.”
Our brains are designed for the two hemispheres to work together, like ballroom dancers gliding fluidly across the floor, keeping perfect time with the music.
But what happens when the two get out of sync?
Rather than flowing as one, the dancers’ movements appear jerky at best. Similarly, our brain imbalances show up as issues with memory, anxiety, depression, anger and more. Prolonged lack of sleep, intense stress and even illnesses like COVID-19 can cause our autonomic nervous systems to become stuck in less-than-optimal states.
Cereset is a wellness company that uses a noninvasive, all-natural technology called BrainEcho, to provide clients a cerebral reset of sorts.
In the early 2000s, Cereset Founder and Chief Executive Officer Lee Gerdes combined his expertise in physics, math, computer software and psychology to develop a neuromodulation process that allows the brain to perceive its own functionality in real time. Rather than a medical device to diagnose or treat, Gerdes’ process stems from the principle that the brain can rebalance and correct itself.
“This helps your brain get unstuck so that you can go into rest and

digest,” says 10-year Tech Coach Brenda Hanning. “Then all the healing your brain is designed for happens.”
Backed by research, this patented technology is available through Cereset franchises worldwide, including Henning’s office in Carmel and Clouser’s location in Bluffton. An introductory 50-minute evaluation provides each client with a baseline brain observation, as well as a recommended plan of action, for just $99.
“I had one client who burst into tears because she said her printout validated how she had been feeling,” says Clouser.
Following an initial appointment, clients can choose to continue with a Cereset Wellness Package of five 90-minutes sessions, and have the initial fee applied to the cost.
Most find the sessions relaxing. Lightweight electroencephalogram sensors on the scalp read brain rhythms and provide reflections back to the brain, while clients recline in comfortable antigravity chairs. In fact, it’s not unusual for people to fall asleep.
“Clients tend to be tired afterward because their brains are doing a lot of work,” says Hanning. “I’ve had some clients describe feeling ‘lighter’ after one session. The majority notice changes over about a month.”
Hanning and Clouser say their clients, ranging in age from 5 to 95, experience more restful and restorative sleep, and achieve higher levels

of well-being.
After the first five sessions, about 30% of Hanning’s clients return for sessions from once a week to every couple of months, or as needed.
“I can tell when I need a ‘tune-up’ myself,” says Hanning.
Clouser tells the story of a fourth-grader who came into her office saying, “I have the brain of a goldfish.”
This student had a hard time staying in his seat at school, and his teachers encouraged his mother to consider medication. Clouser watched the student’s confidence grow as he saw evidence on each session’s printouts of the changes his brain was experiencing.
“By the end of the year he was getting awards, and the teacher wanted to know what had changed,” says Clouser. “He said he felt happier.”

Owner Clarissa Morley Has Pies
Perfected at Pots & Pans Pie Co.
Writer & Photographer / Alesha McCarty
Move over, soup season - we’re here for the pies.
Pots & Pans Pie Co., a local women-owned company in south Broad Ripple, has your go-to fall meals covered. I met owner Clarissa Morley in 2016 at the local Broad Ripple Farmer’s Market and became obsessed with her rich, flaky crust that reminded me of my grandma’s homemade pies - a bite that demands an audible sigh of contentment and a buttery layered shell with perfectly spiced apples felt like love.
Morley started Pots & Pans in her mid-20s and now has a brickand-mortar shop on College Avenue. She says her skills run in the family, as her mom and grandma were also incredible bakers and hostesses.
The shop is bright and cheerful, and you are always warmly greeted. If you’re craving something sweeter, they have pies like apple, s’mores, sugar crème, raspberry and sour cream, chocolate chip cookies, and galettes. You can get savory pot pies and hand pies as well. I like to keep a few in the freezer for easy dinners, or to take to friends.
The savory pies are also marvelously packed with local ingredients, rich flavors, and an equal amount of love. The beef and mushroom pie is hardy and perfectly balanced. Fresh veggies and slow-roasted, locally sourced beef in a rich red-wine gravy create a depth of flavor that is divine and irresistible. I love to keep a mac-and-cheese or biscuits-and-gravy pie on hand.
Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a few stock pies. Fall is a busy season and there’s nothing like some self-love with a homemade, delicious, easy meal.
Pots & Pans Pie Co. is located at 4915 North College Avenue in Indianapolis. For more info, call 317-600-3475 or visit potsandpansindy.com.

Hi & Mighty
@drinkhiandmighty
Sometimes the very best place you can enjoy a chilly fall evening is from the comfort of your own backyard. Hi &
Mighty offers canned, bubbly cocktails that can be found at numerous liquor stores throughout the city. Of course summer means the refreshing lemon and cherry shake-up, but autumn is here, and you have to get your hands on the Spiced Apple Sidekick. This has “throw on a flannel and cozy up by the fireplace” written all over it. It’s the perfect drink to pack for your camping trip or football tailgate - either way, you’ll be the local hero.

@loom_indy
1901 East 46th Street
Showing off a brand-new exterior look, Loom is a local favorite where spending a fall day feels productive, fun and indulgent. You can stop in and knock out a load of laundry. While you’re waiting, test your gaming skills against your friends in their pinball lounge. When it’s all said and done, order up one of their specialty cocktails featuring their made-in-house spirits. We especially recommend the white-whiskey-based Cold Toddy, which will give you all the spiced fall flavors you’re looking for.
MashCraft Brewing Company
@mashcraftbrews
2205 North Delaware St. MashCraft always boasts an impressive draft list, and their seasonal fall beer selection is a testament to their creativity. Their brewmasters craft a symphony of flavors, from rich pumpkin ales (Elvira) to crisp Oktoberfest lagers. We love MashCraft for their honest, heavy-hitting beers that balance nicely with their open, approachable taproom. Check out all they have to offer by stopping in this fall and checking into their beers on Untappd so we can “cheers” with you virtually!
Hotel Broad Ripple, 6520 Westfield Blvd, Indianapolis
favorites. First, Oktoberfest. This beer is a fall classic - it’s rich and malty with a clean finish. Next, Two of Tarts. This mango/passionfruit ale is perfect for those sunny October days that we cherish. And finally, Hoosier Gameday Lager. Sometimes watching IU Football can be slightly frustrating. This candystriped lager makes those moments much more enjoyable!
