Byrne’s Grilled Pizza @byrnesgrilledpizza 5615 North Illinois Street If you made a resolution to get thin in 2024 then Byrne’s is the date night of your dreams, because this is as thin as it gets. That’s right, we’re talking about thin-crust pizza that you can’t live without once you’ve had the first taste. This wins our casual pizza date night, with that intimate feel we all love. What began as a beloved food truck has turned into an Illinois Street staple that has been wowing guests for over 10 years. Take our recs if you want to order like a pro.

Natalie loves the Cheesus and Luke loves The Hot Chick. Next time you’re craving a pizza night out, check out our number-one spot - Byrne’s. In thin crust we trust.
Fernando’s Mexican & Brazilian Cuisine @fernandos_cuisine 834 East 64th Street You want to take your date to Flavortown, U.S.A.? We’ve got just the place for you! Fernando’s is new on the scene, but it has quickly become one of our favorite stops in Broad Ripple. These creative dishes marry
classics from Mexico and Brazil, leaving you with flavors that will make your head spin. Favorites include Feijoada, the national dish of Brazil, and Pollo Azteca, all made fresh with local ingredients. When you combine this mouthwatering menu with a welcoming atmosphere, you will find yourself coming back time and time again. Add Fernando’s to your must-try list in 2024.
Festiva @festivaindy 1217 East 16th Street Festiva will forever hold a special place
in our hearts. We lived on 16th street for four years and loved walking to this tasty neighborhood spot. We might not be across the street anymore, but this is still a go-to date-night spot for us. We remember our first time trying Festiva, and let’s just say it was love at first bite. We are constantly craving their guacamole, shrimp tacos, and adobo braised pork ribs. Now it’s your turn! Come sit in their all-season patio, settle in their vibrant dining room, or belly up to the bar for some of the best margaritas in the city. Whether it’s girls’ night out or a romantic date night, at Festiva every meal is a celebration.
Gather 22 @gatherindy 22 East 22nd Street From the culinary geniuses that brought you Byrne’s Grilled pizza, Gather 22 is a brand-new concept completely centered around love for community, friends and great food. Fall Creek Place gained a gem this year with the opening of Gather. This is your neighborhood watering hole where everyone knows your name. Start your day with your morning coffee, grab brunch or lunch with friends, have a dinner date with that special someone or, heck, do it all. This is a place to try something new and yet be welcomed like family. The owners put it best when saying it’s “inspired by the places we love to visit, built for the place we love to live.”
Harry & Izzy’s @harryandizzys 4050 East 82nd Street When we are looking for a classy date night where we can get a little fancy and enjoy a culinary experience that is sure to impress, Harry & Izzy’s is always on the top of our minds. The atmosphere here is upscale and sophisticated, setting the tone for a romantic evening. Did you know Harry & Izzy’s is a sister restaurant to St. Elmo Steak House? They share some of the same renowned dishes like the world-famous St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail, but have a wide menu variety, including lunch and even Sunday brunch. This year treat your special valentine to the very best with a reservation at Harry & Izzy’s.
Kan-Kan Cinema & Restaurant @kankancinema 1258 Windsor Street Is there any date night more classic than dinner and a movie? What if we told you that you can enjoy both in the same magical place? Kan-Kan is the only locally grown, nonprofit arthouse cinema in town offering diverse programming with something for everyone - and the dinner we mentioned is not your typical movie theater pretzels and pizza. Chef Michael Conley and his team create and recreate their menu seasonally with five-star apps, entrées and desserts. Kan-Kan also offers memberships (we just re-upped for our third year) for any budget, with which you can
get your cinema fix as well as vouchers to use at the restaurant and bar. Stop in this month to enjoy special Valentine’s screenings.
Meridian Restaurant & Bar @meridian_restaurant 5694 North Meridian Street Meridian Restaurant & Bar is one of Indiana’s great restaurants, on one of America’s great streets. To us, this was a hidden gem in plain sight for a long time. We would drive by on a daily basis before we finally wised up and stopped in for dinner. Learn from our mistakes and stop into Meridian Restaurant & Bar as soon as possible. You will be welcomed into a refined dining TownePost.com | February 2024 | 5
environment with upscale comfort food, a perfect remedy for the winter months. You’ll savor every bite of the beautifully plated cuisine and your taste buds will thank you. Stop in soon to grab a drink at the bar, or cozy up by the fireplace for an intimate dinner date.
Provision @provision.restaurant 2721 East 86th Street, Suite 200 You know us and you know that Cunningham Restaurant Group is our shared love language. We can no easier choose a favorite concept than we can choose a favorite cat (Reggie and Margot are both perfect, by the way). However, Provision is one that we come back to over and over for some of our most special occasions. Enjoy an elevated setting in the stunning Ironworks Hotel while indulging in a locally sourced menu that will have you talking all the way home. Deciding what to order here is always tough, so we recommend the Chef’s Tasting Menu so you don’t have to sacrifice a single thing. Cheers!

Owner Adam Reinstrom
Owner Pablo Gonzalez
Gather 22 22 E 22nd St, Indianapolis 8 | February 2024 | TownePost.com
O
wners Adam Reinstrom and Pablo Gonzalez creatively designed Gather 22 restaurant. Reinstrom has a passion for winemaking, ceramics and design, while Gonzalez excels in mixology, painting and service. The result is a space that serves scrumptious food, and is a visual delicacy - a unique atmosphere where everyone wants to come together. From hand-placed stone to lighting studies that create the perfect ambiance, Gather 22 was intentionally designed for comfortable visits, divine meals, and a leisurely space for patrons to work, relax and consume. The space features local artists, thoughtful space design, and a representation of the owners and the things that bring them joy. The owners are currently running Byrne’s Grilled Pizza, and were inspired to create a new concept, an expression of themselves and their mark on our community. After looking at various spaces, they found an unassuming 1960s building with natural stone exterior walls, an overgrown backyard and much potential. The building formerly serves as a space for
Timmy Global Health and a nonprofit bike shop. However, looking at the building now, you might never guess that the space was once lined with cubicles. A few architectural features remain, including the natural stone exterior, a hidden conveyor belt, a large staircase to the basement prep space, and the former concrete path outside where the bike shop staff used to teach neighborhood kids to ride. Reinstrom’s main inspiration was a clay amphora, used to make and store wine. Amphoras tell a story about where they were found, who made the wine, and what the community was like. Gather would become their amphora for the community. The curvy, vase-like symbol is playfully included throughout the space. Sensual curves can be found in the seating areas with custom-made arches from Wabashiki Woodworks, the custom-poured bar top with hand-placed recycled stones from their travels, and the curved bench seating. A windy walkway leads from the front
through the main room down the runway of group seating, and into the moody but bright bar, ending at the velvet-tufted intimate corner overlooking the bar and patio space. Local art will rotate with a custom cocktail pairing, and proceeds will return to the featured artist. They can host over 100 patrons just on the

murals by local artist Emily Gable. Just around the corner from the main dining space is a runway of intimate seating, perfect for groups of six. Reinstrom designed deep, comfortable booths with their site builder, Mike Stevens, using remnant fabric sourced from Paul Howard Custom Furniture. An entire wall of windows was added, which looks out onto the patio and illuminates the bar, Gonzalez’s favorite space.
inside. When you walk into the space, your perspective peeks at the beautiful main dining room through the handmade breeze blocks from Mexico. A carry-out coffee window operates from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. To the right is a small lounge space where light floods in, and the community is welcome to sit and sip all day long with a good book. The main dining room is perfect for parties of around 20 as well as family dining, and provides a casual, fun atmosphere. The space features three large
“I love showing guests to the bar - the look of surprise on their face when they turn the corner,” Gonzalez says.“The bar at Gather 22 is more like a breath of fresh air. Natural light transforms the space and it becomes a cozy, romantic spot in the evening.” The bar has the original pendants with the addition of Reinstrom’s handmade, unique ceramic shades. The outdoor space is around 8,000 square feet. There are sections for dining, relaxing
and lounging. They’ll host markets, concerts and community events in warmer weather. The patio is puppy friendly. They look forward to hosting weddings, ceremonies and parties. Reinstrom says the biggest challenge was “being intentional and unique” with the design of the space. Designing a space from the ground up took a lot of time. Many parts were designed in-house or customized while being as sustainable and fiscally responsible as possible. The space may be a passion project designed to showcase its owners, but it’s clearly a space created to represent and welcome the community. “Feel free to hang out as long as you’d like,” Reinstrom says. There’s no rush.” Gather 22 is located at 22 East 22nd Street in Indianapolis. For more info, call 317-2582222 or visit gather22.com.

A HEART FOR HOOPS NBA ALL-STAR 2024 HOST COMMITTEE CREATES LOVE LETTERS TO BASKETBALL CONCEPT Writer / Jaylan Noelle Photography Provided Sponsor / lifeinindy.com
Pacers Sports & Entertainment (PSE) is taking Hoosier hospitality to a new level as they welcome guests for NBA All-Star 2024. Tens of thousands of people from around the world will travel to Indianapolis, drop their bags in their hotel rooms, and find a handwritten note - A Love Letter to Basketball.
Fair, the team collected many of the letters there. Though they all begin with “Dear Basketball,” each postcard tells a unique story. Some notes are sentimental and others are funny. Some tell stories and others feature stick figures. All of them share what basketball means to fans and players, young and old. “We know that we’ve got a sort of unique relationship with the game here in Indiana because of our tradition and history, and this was an idea that came to light,” Lopez said.
The NBA All-Star 2024 Host Committee has collected more than 8,000 postcards that tell Corey Wilson, vice president for community personal, unique stories from Hoosiers who all engagement with PSE and executive director share a love for the game. of the Pacers Foundation, and his team collected 1,500 letters at a Carmel High “We thought about ways that we could ensure School basketball game last month. that guests get that special touch,” said Daniel Lopez, vice president of external relations and While collecting the letters, Willson said he corporate communications for PSE. was struck by how personal the stories were. Some letters offer thanks to basketball for The committee intentionally did not make giving them their dream job or bringing them the postcards available on the internet, but joy, while others recall especially memorable instead went around to high school basketball championships, seasons, teams games, elementary schools, organizations and and coaches. corporations to collect the notes in person. One letter shared that the writer didn’t have much of a connection with their father until they started playing basketball together. “Those are the kind of things where you’re like, ‘Wow, I can’t make that up,’ ” Wilson said. “It’s been amazing.” Wilson even wrote a love letter of his own. In the letter, Wilson remembers a time when he met former Pacers player Chuck Person at an event. Wilson now works in the department that made that meaningful experience possible all those years ago. The campaign, according to Wilson, shows guests just how serious Indiana is about hospitality and basketball. “To be able to get 8,000 letters is not an easy feat, but it is achievable simply because the love for the game is definitely here,” Wilson said. Though Wilson said he hopes

to have all of the love letters collected weeks before the event, he encourages anyone interested in writing a letter to visit nba.com/ allstar and click “Love Letters to Basketball” under the “Community” tab. Indianapolis won the bid on hosting the 2021 All-Star Game in 2017 before it was rescheduled due to the pandemic. After almost seven years of planning, the 2024 All-Star weekend is sure to be a memorable event for all. The 2024 NBA All-Star Game will be Sunday, February 18. Various events will also take place Friday and Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indiana Convention Center, including the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, the Slam Dunk Contest and more. Lopez said there will even be attractions for those who aren’t huge basketball fans. “All-Stars are different from pretty much any other sport in that this is more than basketball,” Lopez said. “It’s really much more of an arts and culture type event.” A list of events and ticket information are available at nba.com/allstar. 14 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

“NORTH INDY PODCAST” SHEDS A LIGHT ON LOCAL BUSINESSES, NONPROFITS AND MORE Writer / Michelle Kaufman Photographer / Daniel Woody
The “North Indy Podcast” was launched one year ago by Michael Durr, publisher of North Indy Magazine, and John Overton, audio engineer and podcaster at Popular Rapture Company in Broad Ripple. Through the print magazine, podcast and social media, the North Indy brand is focusing on community members and organizations across the northern area of Indianapolis. “Every publication has their own little niche and I think that ours is unique,” Durr said. “We try to give a platform and a voice to the businesses and organizations that are primarily north of downtown. When my wife and I bought the magazine, it was Broad Ripple Magazine. We wanted it to be broader and more of 16 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

a collection of neighborhoods, and have Broad Ripple really be the central part of that. I call Broad Ripple the beating heart of North Indy.” Each episode is designed to connect the listener to community members and share the stories of humanity behind local business owners, organizations and artists. Travis Carpenter of the Indianapolis Alleycats Episode 3
Dwight Simmons, Comedian Episode 5
“I wasn’t expecting to become a cohost on a podcast the day I met Michael at the studio, but our shared passion for making something cool, and complementary skill sets, led us to the ‘North Indy Podcast,’” Overton said. “Normally I produce podcasts, so it’s been fun to be on the other side of the mic. Playing a role in showcasing movers and shakers in the community is an honor. I learn something new every episode and hope our listeners do too.” The episodes are evergreen, meaning listeners can tune into any episode at any time and still hear relevant content. The podcast is designed to complement the magazine while standing independently. The team records at Round Table Recording Company in Broad Ripple and has ventured out for a few episodes to record on location, including an episode that was recorded at Gather 22 inside the Rhino Bus. “If we do a story on someone in the magazine, we have 750 words max, which isn’t very much space,” Durr said. “Part of the podcast idea was to go in deeper and really learn about the person behind a business or organization. I try to do fun things and talk to cool people.” Quality is important to the entire team, which includes Engineer Trisha Pittman. “This podcast is special because it brings light to small businesses around Indianapolis,” Pittman said. “The ‘North Indy Podcast’ is an opportunity for businesses around Indianapolis to become known and recognized for their greatness.”

second episode. After connecting with Overton, she said she was instantly intrigued by not only the substance, but also the potential of the podcast. Each episode allows guests to explain their passion and how they turned that passion into a career. “Michael and John do a phenomenal job of composing questions for our guests that allow them to elaborate on their origin stories as well as go more in depth with current events taking place in their lives,” Pittman said. “This podcast not only spreads the word about the exciting things happening in Indianapolis, but also sparks inspiration for listeners to follow their dreams.” In addition to the magazine, Durr also owns Ripple Media Productions, a company focusing on delivering the highestquality imagery and video. His broadcast background has helped enhance his storytelling skills that he brings to each episode. “Everybody has a story, and I feel like whether you’ve opened a restaurant or you’re running a business or you work for a nonprofit, there’s a story there and there’s somebody behind it,” Durr said. “You could do this forever and never run out of stories.” New episodes of the “North Indy Podcast” are released monthly. HEARTLAND FILM’S NEW FUNDRAISING EVENT TO FEATURE LIVE MUSIC AND MUCH MORE Writer / Natalie Platt Photographers / Doug Fellegy & Michael Durr
If you’re a fan of The Beatles and supporting local arts organizations, say hello to Cinemania! Heartland Film’s new signature fundraiser, Cinemania, sponsored by F.A. Wilhelm 20 | February 2024 | TownePost.com
Construction Co., is debuting on Friday, April 19, at the Crane Bay Event Center. With its inaugural theme, “A Tribute to The Beatles in Film,” this is not your average sit-down fundraiser, but rather an extravagant evening featuring
live music from tribute band BritBeat, psychedelic photo experiences, food and drinks. The local nonprofit arts organization Heartland Film is well-equipped to put on worldclass events. Last year their
two film festivals, the Academy Award-qualifying Indy Shorts and the Heartland International Film Festival, both made the 2023 Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World list by MovieMaker Magazine. Now’s your chance to be
a part of one of the coolest parties of the year while supporting the future of Heartland Film’s community events, education programs and independent film festivals. You might even see some famous faces, including the event’s Honorary Chair, Angelo Pizzo, award-winning screenwriter and producer of beloved inspirational sports dramas “Rudy” and “Hoosiers.”
This red-carpet event invites you to step into a whimsical world through immersive experiences and fab fashion. Psychedelic chic is the official dress code of Cinemania. Embrace vibrant colors, striking silhouettes, bold patterns and textured fabrics. Think cocktail attire with a ‘60s and ‘70s twist. The more fun, the better! The Cinemania photo
shoot was inspired by the eccentric and eclectic fashion of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper era. Market Vintage assisted Heartland Film in curating the models’ looks, and they can be your personal Cinemania stylist too. Just stop in and Siera, the owner, will help you pick an authentic outfit and funky accessories. Flashy jackets, flowing dresses, patterned shirts,

bell-bottom pants, retro jumpsuits and vintage scarves are some trending items you can expect to see on the red carpet. White boots are especially popular now, and are the perfect accent to a ’60s go-go-style dress. There will be many unique photo opportunities, so don’t forget fun accessories like colored sunglasses, feather boas, platform shoes, flower crowns and satin scarves to make your pictures pop.

Be sure to wear something you can dance in. Chicagobased tribute band BritBeat will be headlining the event. They’ll take guests through The Beatles eras through elaborate costume changes, including the Ed Sullivan Show, the Sgt. Pepper era and Abbey Road. Like the Heartland Film website says, “You can’t buy love, but you can buy a ticket to a good time.” Cinemania has several different ticket options available for guests:
