BEACON OFF THE PATH SERVES AS A TASTY PARTNER BUSINESS TO BLACK CIRCLE

What makes a community? A diverse group of people living in close proximity. A social group that has something in common. A shared hobby, interest or common goal. A community can be defined in many ways. However, at the center of every community is usually a starting point, a source of inspiration, a beacon.

Kristine and John-Christian Bockman have been drawn to what residents now affectionately refer to as the 46th Street coalition neighborhood. Ten years ago this neighborhood was desolate - a drive-through area just east of SoBro. However, in 2016 Black Circle Brewing changed all that by opening up a venue space in the old Double 8 warehouse, now called Refinery46. Kristine and John-Christian denote Black Circle Brewing as a beacon for this neighborhood, a starting point, and a guiding light for how the area develops. When they finally had an opportunity to open a kitchen for the venue, the name came easily - Beacon Off the Path.

Beacon serves as a safe space for the diverse community, similar to their other successful venue, GoldLeaf Savory & Sweet. While GoldLeaf focuses more on coffee, breakfast, brunch, evening snacks, and their wine program, Beacon is here to serve the masses coming through the Black Circle venue. Whether you’re visiting Black Circle for a trivia night, live performance, or the Sunday show (free comedy night), Beacon will be open and ready.

Writer / Alesha McCarty Photographer / Michael Durr Owners Kristine and JC Bockman

The thoughtfully designed menu focuses on scrumptious handheld items, a fine example of elevated street food. “We wanted to ensure the items were delicious but easy to manage, and provided sustenance whilst you enjoy the show,” says Kristine Bockman.

She has a culinary background, and her flavors and creations elevate even something as simple as a fried bologna sandwich.

You won’t find any ordinary fried bologna sandwich here. The team handcuts thick slices of bologna, sears the outside, and stacks it on a toasted butter bun. John-Christian’s personal favorite is the Portuguese Steak Sandwich, which reminds him of his time in Portugal. It features thinly cut steak, marinated in deep, rich flavors of red wine and garlic, perfectly grilled and served with homemade periperi for a little kick.

The team ensures the menu covers something for everyone. The Tofu Street Tacos are both vegan, gluten free and absolutely delicious, served with tomatillo salsa. The Quesadillas can be subbed with their homemade hummus for a dairy-free option. If you’re looking for something warm, gooey and comforting, the Grilled Cheese with seared tomatoes really hits the spot. Their offerings

can accommodate everyone. They also offer rotating sides like their Broccoli Salad or Caprese Salad. The team boasts that there will also be more specials to come, additional side options, frozen yogurt, and pop-ups to support other creators. The menu also celebrates several local businesses, like the option of adding Smoking Goose City Ham, or the Chorizo Tacos featuring Old Major Market. All sandwiches can be subbed with bread from local gluten-free bakery Native Bread, and you can find a refreshing kombucha from Circle Bev.

Nothing on the menu exceeds $10, and the owners are proud to serve food made with quality ingredients at an affordable price.

Beacon is also family friendly and puppy friendly, with patio seating. The space currently showcases hand-painted graphics, classic blue walls, a row of pinball machines and a few plants. The eastern light that pours through large, industrial black-paned windows in the evening offers a warm glow to the dining room, which will be filled with lush green plants and local art. A TV will provide a direct live showing of the Black Circle space so patrons don’t miss a beat when ordering food for the

Their grand opening went off without a hitch on April 20, and the team has been busy perfecting their service and menu. Offering a familiar, friendly face, you’ll often find John-Christian at the front counter, while Tony and Teenie handle the kitchen. The same team you’ve grown to know and love in the mornings at GoldLeaf you’ll now find in the evenings at Beacon. If you are seeking good food, an accepting and inviting atmosphere, and a dependable, committed team, seek the Beacon. While you’re

always welcome to stay for the show, they also offer quick service to go.

While the vibe is evolutionary as the team settles into the new space, one thing is sure - Beacon will serve as a lantern in the dark, and a space where everyone can find a little light.

HOMETOWN WINDOW & DOOR COMPANY IS GROWING LOCAL ROOTS

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographers / Michael Durr and Daniel Woody

Spring is here, which means it’s officially window season. The experienced team at Hometown Window & Door Company, a small, boutique Andersen dealership servicing Indiana, is eager to tackle all of your window and door projects, both large and small.

Andersen, the oldest window manufacturer in America, invented double-pane glass, Perma-Shield products and Fibrex composite material. Plus, Andersen’s windows and doors are unsurpassed for their beauty, quality and value. As a fullline Andersen dealer, Hometown Window & Door offers more options than any other standard window company for both commercial and residential applications. There are full-frame wood and aluminum products, and also the versatility of composite windows. The Hometown team believes that Andersen makes the best products in the Midwest, and that’s backed with a quality installation.

“You can sell a wonderful product, but if you can’t put it in right, that doesn’t really mean anything,” says Andy Brown, general manager at Hometown Window. “We take a lot of pride in the fact that Hometown is a family-owned and -operated company, delivering quality products to consumers. From the sales process to the finishing touches, we make sure clients have a perfect install.”

All four co-owners, Darren Peck, Dan Hanlin, Mitch Brown and Andy Brown, are certified professionals who bring more than three decades of experience working with Indiana homeowners. Their combined wealth of knowledge, skill, energy and commitment is unparalleled.

“True to its name, Hometown Window & Door Company is Noblesville’s neighborhood-feeling Andersen dealership,” says Scott Dorrell, sales manager for Hometown. “We are a hometown company, through and through.”

Not only have they completed more than 450 projects in the Hamilton County area in the past year, but the company is also committed to taking care of and investing in the community. That investment comes in a number of ways. For example, they are active in the local Children’s Festival, they hosted a pumpkin painting activity at the Covered Bridge Festival, they sponsored Music on Main Street, and were a headline sponsor for the Cool Creek Concert Series last year and will be again this year. Plus, they will be part of the Noblesville Farmers Market this year.

“It’s been really exciting for the ownership group to be able to work in the neighborhoods where they grew up,” Dorrell says. “We want to continue to make Noblesville an even better place to live.”

When shopping for windows and doors, customers appreciate never having to interact with a third party, as they always work directly with the Hometown team. Again, they are all about representing a national brand while providing a personal, hometown experience.

“In the residential replacement market, we’re offering people a full-service, whiteglove installation with an Andersen dealer, all of the Andersen options, and the Andersen quality with certified master installers,” Dorrell says. “Generally you don’t have dealers doing the installation, but our craftsmen are trained and experienced in estimating and installing windows of all types. When you sign a contract with Hometown, we handle everything. That includes consultation, listening to the homeowner, design, manufacturing, installation and the service.”

One customer, Kelly Goshorn, likened the

experience of working with Hometown to shopping for high-end purses and products.

“Andersen windows are like Coach purses,” she says. “We can go anywhere and get a much less expensive wallet or purse, but it’s not going to be of equal quality. The same is true of Andersen windows, and when you’re talking about your home, that’s such an important investment.”

If you’re looking to get some questions answered or simply formulate some ideas for a future project, you can set up a free consult with someone from Hometown. These consults typically take between 60 and 90 minutes, and you don’t have to commit to starting a project just because you set up that consult. It can be a purely informational session in which you talk through the project you’re considering, have the Hometown team inspect your home, identify potential issues and discuss possible options.

“I’ve sat with a customer for more than two hours because they wanted to look at every single design option for a front entry door, and that’s completely fine,” Dorrell says. “We are here for you, whatever you need.”

The truth is that the Hometown Window & Door team enjoys interacting with the community on every level.

“It’s been wonderful to see what Noblesville is growing into because of this hometown company,” Dorrell says. “As a show of our appreciation for our Noblesville residents, for the month of May we are doing Buy 2 windows, get 1 free. Plus, 35% off patio doors.”

Hometown Window & Door Company is located at 1710 South 10th Street in Noblesville. Their main showroom is at 240 West Carmel Drive in Carmel. For more information, call 317-773-2100 or visit hometownwindowteam.com.

PARK IT

SPLASH THE DAY AWAY AT THE JCC SID AND LOIS ESKENAZI WATER PARK

Writer / Renee Larr

The JCC Sid and Lois Eskenazi Water Park offers Indianapolis residents fun ways to beat the heat and humidity each year. The 71,000-square-foot aquatic center provides guests with a competition pool, a zero-depth

pool, a lazy river, water slides, a cafe, and picnicking areas throughout. It’s open to everyone in the community from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year.

The Mordoh Zero-Depth Pool is designed with children 6 years old and younger in mind, and includes interactive water features,

“This area is great for young kids to splash around and play without worrying about being in a larger pool,” says Nicole Hagemeyer, general manager of fitness and membership.

“It’s safer for the younger kids when they’re

just learning about the water.”

Guests receive a view of the entire water park leisurely riding down the 300-foot Biccard Lazy River. For those with a little more adventure in mind, there are two water slides to choose from - a 150-foot flume or 125-foot tube for guests 48” or taller.

“The water slides feed into the lazy river,” Hagemeyer says. “One is an open-air slide and one is a tunnel slide. They’re right next to each other, so in the summertime we see many families racing each other down the two. Another part of our water park is the Cantor River Island. It’s a great place for families to hang out and have views of the entire park while getting some shade and relaxation.”

Hagemeyer says the JCC offers many different programs throughout the summer including water fitness classes, camp free swim and swim lessons, youth-group swim lessons, adult group swim lessons through Indy Aquatic Masters, youth swim team, private and semi-private swim lessons for all ages, splishsplash birthday parties, water park rentals, scuba diving through Indy Scuba, Sea Scope programming, lifeguard training courses, and water scouts.

Water fitness classes include Aqua Jog, Ai Chi, Aquajoints, Deep Water HIIT, BOQUA and Rivercise. Ai Chi is a water adaptation of tai chi, using a combination of deep breathing and slow, broad, controlled movements of the arms, legs and torso. BOQUA is a boxing class in the water using hand bars called boqs.

“The Rivercise class is wildly popular with

TownePost.com / JUNE 2023 / NORTH INDY MAGAZINE / 15

guests,” Hagemeyer says. “Participants walk against the current of the Biccard Lazy River and do various exercises. It’s an entertaining way to exercise. We also put over 400 camp kids through swim lessons each day. In addition to that, we offer safety around water week, where we do provide free community swim lessons."

Kids can celebrate their summer birthdays with a splish-splash birthday party at the Eskenazi Water Park. For two hours, party guests can play in the water in a reserved park section. Parties are available on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. during open season.

Sea Scope Incorporated is a nonprofit organization working to increase diversity in science and aquatics, to raise awareness and efforts in marine conservation among all people, regardless of race and background. For those building up an appetite splashing around the park all day, the park is home to the only kosher restaurant in Indianapolis, the J Café. Guests are also permitted to bring in their own food and beverages, but are asked to avoid pork and shellfish out of respect for Jewish traditions. Alcohol is not allowed.

The park was built in 2003 and is named after well-known philanthropists Sid and Lois

Eskenazi. The couple donated $40 million to IU Health for the hospital now known as Eskenazi Health. In addition, they funded the water park.

Hagemeyer says aquatics are deeply rooted in Jewish culture. She says the JCC serves the Jewish and non-Jewish communities, as learning to swim is a universal value. The JCC also offers aquatic programming to everyone, regardless of age.

The JCC Indianapolis is located at 6701 Hoover Road. For more information, call 317251-9467 or visit jccindy.org.

RECOVERY WITHIN REACH

Hope Abounds at Dove Recovery House for Women

In 2001, Trudy Brown noticed a disparity between the number of sober living homes for women and men in Indianapolis. She decided to open Dove Recovery House for Women.

When Chief Executive Officer Wendy Noe joined the organization eight years ago, Dove House had a staff of six, housed 23 women, and had few policies and procedures in place. It now has a staff of 35, serves 40 women per night, and operates a second campus in Jasper, Indiana, where that location serves 15 women per night.

“Today our program is very comprehensive,” Noe says. “We want them sober, and they’re living here sober, but what we say is that traumas are really gateway drugs.”

Dove’s programming centers around addressing clients’ trauma. According to Noe, the average age of first drug use is 13, nearly all addicts have experienced trauma, and about 90% experienced childhood sexual trauma.

“Trauma is what brings them to substance use,” Noe says. “If we

don’t identify that trauma, then we’re just going to see a repeating cycle.”

The program’s success rate is more than 70%. Success requires that residents stay at the house for at least 90 days, leave the program without being re-incarcerated and with stable housing, employment or enrollment in education, and reunite with family and friends.

“So they’re reentering our community and they’re contributing members,” Noe says.

Dove Recovery House for Women served more than 100 women in 2022 alone, and hundreds of women since its founding.

United States, according to the CDC, the work of Dove House has a

insurance, and receive health checks and appropriate medication to stabilize mental health issues. The work done by Dove House reduces the burden on the criminal justice system by reducing the number of women being re-incarcerated. Dove’s work to reunite mothers with their children also reduces the number of children in the foster care system, and aims to stop the next cycle of trauma which may lead to substance abuse disorders.

“The women are reentering society,” Noe says. “They’re becoming taxpayers. They have health insurance. They have new, healthy lifestyle behaviors. We’re helping the women become the women they’re meant to be.”

Kristy Shene, a graduate of Dove Recovery House, is now a certified addiction peer recovery coach and works for Dove House as a peer recovery case manager.

Shene began using drugs at age 17 and spent seven years in and out of addiction. In 2013 Shene was court-ordered to the recovery home and stayed for six months before relapsing. Two years later, after being released from jail, Shene walked straight to Dove House.

“I didn’t even have a bed waiting for me or anything,” Shene says. “I ended up getting to stay, and I just worked really hard and put my everything into it.”

Though she struggled and relapsed again, Dove House staff helped her overcome and supported her through the adoption of her children. Once Shene finished the program, the staff helped her enroll in college and made sure she got the training necessary to work in her current position.

“Now I have five years clean and I’ve been working here in this position for three years,” Shene says. “Dove House taught me how to deal with things and how to cope without using. Now I get to assist those women, the same women who are just like me, in finding other outlets for their feelings. Because if I did it, you could do it.”

Reducing stigma around substance abuse disorder is one of the organization’s main goals. Dove House recognizes it as a disease and not a personal choice or a moral failing.

“We think about all the youth in our communities, especially getting through COVID, who are dealing with trauma in isolation,” Noe says. “If we don't talk about it and look at that trauma as that nucleus and that lens, we’re going to see a repeating behavior. People need help. They need access to resources to turn family and friends away from this.”

At 17 years old, Paula Kincade spiraled into heroin use after both her parents died one month apart. Kincade spent years living paycheck to paycheck with five kids, living with family members and struggling with severe depression. Before coming to Dove House, Kincade hadn’t ever gone through trauma therapy.

“This place actually saved my life,” Kincade says. “I wish that I would have found this place 30 years ago.”

Today, Kincade has been clean off of heroin for five and a half years, and works as the kitchen manager and residential assistant.

Kincade says she spent years believing she was worthless and that no one loved her, before coming to Dove House.

“They’re so proud of me, and I’ve never had anyone proud of me,” Kincade says. “They love you unconditionally. People who’ve relapsed, they’ve forgiven them and are still letting them come. Lots of times I wonder, why are they doing that? That’s because they know what they’re doing.”

Clients are not expected to pay for services, removing one of the biggest barriers to accessing treatment.

Community members who wish to support Dove House financially, register for the annual fundraiser celebration luncheon and dessert auction in September, or learn more info, can visit doverecoveryhouse.org.

Dover Recovery House for Women is located at 3351 North Meridian Street, Suite 110 in Indianapolis. Also call 317-964-0450 for additional details.
