BGW Construction Spearheads Summer Youth Program Writer / Bobby Williams Photography Provided

We’ve noticed a big skill void in our industry. With the elimination of shop classes in the school system, the plague of smartphones, addiction to video games, and a cultural movement towards yearlong sports commitments for young ones, fewer and fewer kids these days get the opportunity to work with their hands. Yet, it is our strong belief at BGW Construction that learning a skill, and creating things in the image of our creator, is key to self-confidence and lifelong success.

FROM DESIGN TO BUILD WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED

We decided to be part of the change and start an amazing summer program organized by the Plainfield Youth Assistance Program. Eight lucky local kids have been given the opportunity to learn about woodworking and carpentry at the BGW Construction headquarters right here in Plainfield. This summer, with the help of Principal Melvin Siefert of Plainfield High School and Assistant Superintendent Pat Cooney of the Plainfield Community School Corporation, the young men and women of the program built their very own tool box. Throughout the next few weeks they’ll be finishing their own Adirondack chair. It feels good to meet young people with the drive, focus and work ethic that we pray all of our kids have. Trust us when we say, “Fear not for our future - if these kids are representative of their generation, we are going to be just fine.” BGW Construction is located at 172 Williams Trace in Plainfield. NEW QB IN TOWN

GETTING TO KNOW INDIANAPOLIS COLTS QUARTERBACK CARSON WENTZ Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided by the Indianapolis Colts

Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Carson Wentz has heard the rumors and can confirm - he and Prince Harry are two different people despite their similar looks.

“We’re not the same person,” Wentz says with a laugh. “I hate to break it to some people, but nope.” Traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Indianapolis Colts in March of 2021, Wentz follows in the footsteps of the now-retired Phillip Rivers, who took the Colts to the playoffs in his lone year AUGUST 2021

with the team. Drafted at number two by Philadelphia in the 2016 NFL Draft, Wentz won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2017, where he first played under current Colts Head Coach Frank Reich, who served as Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator. Although born in Raleigh, North Carolina,

Wentz spent most of his upbringing in North Dakota - a state he still has many ties to today. “Both of my parents are there, and I have a bunch of friends and stuff back there,” Wentz says. “I grew up there, went to high school there and went to college there. North Dakota is definitely home. I love that place and love those people back there.” While Indianapolis may be completely new terrain for him and his family, Wentz at least has a familiar face here in town with Reich. “I loved playing for him as my coach and

loved working together with him as my offensive coordinator,” Wentz says. “We just really got along well off the field and really connected on a deeper level spiritually. I just thought we had a really good thing in Philly working together, so I think we were both mutually excited to get back and work together again.” While Carson, his wife Madison, and their 1-year-old daughter Hadley have been busy settling in, the Indianapolis community has made sure to welcome them with open arms. “The way we’ve been welcomed and embraced has just been really cool, both AUGUST 2021

football-wise from the organization but also in the community,” Wentz says. “It just seems like such a family-friendly environment. Everyone’s rooting for you, pulling for you and wants you to succeed.” When he’s not out on the gridiron, Wentz also stays busy with a nonprofit he started called the Audience of One (AO1) Foundation. A devout Christian, Wentz has tried to use his platform for good since entering the NFL. “When I was a rookie, I knew that my purpose was so much bigger than throwing touchdowns on Sunday,” he says. “Coming to my faith when I was in college, I knew

there was a platform that was different. Lord knows how long I’ll have that platform, so as a rookie I said, ‘Let’s start the foundation. I don’t know how many years I’ll be in this position to have a voice, have eyes on me and make a difference, so while we’ve got it, let’s make the most of it.’ ” The AO1 Foundation consists of three separate ministries according to Wentz. The first of these is called Thy Kingdom Crumb. “That goes around and gives out free food to anybody and everybody, and also talks

with people on the streets, shares the gospel and prays with people,” Wentz says of Thy Kingdom Crumb. “Anybody and everybody is welcome. We look forward to that continuing in Philly, but potentially seeing how we can get involved in a similar fashion out here in the Indianapolis area.”

“It’s just been really cool to see God working through it and for us to be obedient to where he calls us to go,” says Wentz of the AO1 Foundation and its three ministries. “It’s been fun to really see lives being impacted and changed, not only on this earth but also for eternity, and that’s really where the greatest reward has been.”

love Indianapolis. “We love it out here,” he says. “It’s got that small-town feel, but it’s definitely a bigger city that has everything you need from restaurants to family activities. There are so many things to do. I think the culture around here and the community atmosphere really fits me and my family perfectly, and we’re excited about it.” As for his inner outdoorsman, Wentz says he looks forward to exploring all of the nature Indiana has to offer as well. “The hunting, fishing and everything around in the countryside out here seems really exciting for me to dabble with, get out there and enjoy,” Wentz says. looms for at least the next month.

It’s still in the 90s most days, but fall is quickly approaching. August is the month that students go back to school, the football games dominate weekends and stores start to put out their fall styles if they haven’t already.

1. UTILIZE DENIM

Sweaters are probably the farthest thing from your mind, but if you love fall fashion as much as I do, you’re ready to start transitioning. There are a few easy ways to do that even with the summer heat that

Now is the time to add denim to your wardrobe. Stock up on a couple of pairs of new skinnies or boyfriend fit jeans because you’ll be able to wear them through the next couple of seasons. Nordstrom, Madewell, Evereve, and Sweet Olive are my go-to stores to find new AUGUST 2021

denim styles that are comfortable and also on trend for the year. 2. FLANNELS ARE A MUST

You simply can’t go wrong with flannels, especially for fall. Wear tthese now unbuttoned with a tank or graphic tee and your favorite denim shorts. Then when the temperatures drop, layer flannels with a vest paired with booties and your new high-rise skinny jeans. This is the ultimate piece for bonfires and, honestly, if you only add one item to your wardrobe for fall, it should be flannels. 3. PEEP TOE BOOTIES ARE A GOOD WAY TO GO

Right now, it’s a little too warm for booties with socks, at least for me. I’d suggest peep toe booties that will go with almost every outfit. You can wear these with dresses, denim or even shorts. DSW almost always has a great selection and they are my go-to store for shoes. 4. ADD FALL COLORS

It seems this year that fall colors have been on trend since January. We’ve seen mustard and olive for most of the summer, but if you haven’t added them to your wardrobe yet, now is certainly the time. Along with those two hues, purple, navy and burgundy are also a few to add to your shopping list. Try a fall-colored button-up paired with denim shorts and a peep toe bootie. That’s the perfect August look. 5. LAYER UP

As we move into fall, you probably notice that mornings are chilly followed by warm, sunny days and then back into breezy nights again. A light cardigan with a short sleeve floral top and your favorite denim is a good way to go. You can also use flannels as a layering piece. Leather jackets are common as we move into colder temps. But, be careful not to over-layer in a way that looks messy and confusing leaving you with no shape.

AUGUST 2021

6. SANDALS ARE ACCEPTABLE

Utilize those summer sandals as long as you can because your feet won’t see the light of day until at least March. I used to say that “jeans and flip-flop” weather is my favorite and that holds true today. Wear sandals with your favorite jumpsuits, denim or dresses until it’s just too cold. Black or cognac sandals are my suggestion for transitional colors. 7. ADD SOME PRINTS

Leopard is always popular for fall and so is plaid. Bold fall florals are another print to add. Pattern mixing is one of my favorite things to try for fall. I like to mix leopard flats with a plaid top and comfortable denim. Add statement earrings to the look and you’re good to go. These tips are easy ways to make fall clothing work even though it’s still warm outside. It’s best to start transitioning now while the stores are

coming out with those perfect pieces for your family photos at the apple orchard.

WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK FIVE TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR BREASTFEEDING EXPERIENCE

Writer / Jan Record, RN and Lactation Consultant at IU Health West Hospital Photography Provided

GET COMFORTABLE TOGETHER.

World Breastfeeding Week takes place annually during the first week of August, and is an opportunity to bring discussions about breastfeeding to the forefront of people’s minds. We’ve all heard that breastfeeding is advantageous for both babies and moms. From helping to boost a baby’s immune system to creating a strong emotional bond, there are plenty of benefits to consider. However, breastfeeding, like learning any new skill, can take time and patience, especially in the beginning.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR BREASTS.

ASK FOR HELP.

Your hospital’s lactation consultants and maternity nurses are there to support and help you through labor and your breastfeeding journey. Breastfeeding doesn’t always come naturally, and seeking help right away from lactation experts is a good way to ensure both you and your baby get started on a good path. Following your stay in the hospital, look for local breastfeeding support groups with lactation specialists.

POSTPONE PACIFIERS.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends waiting three to four weeks after birth to introduce a pacifier. This will help you and your baby establish a good breastfeeding routine. After the first month, pacifiers are less likely to interfere with breastfeeding.

Make sure your arms and your baby are supported during feedings. Use pillows to support your arms and make yourself comfortable. Having skin-to-skin contact with your baby immediately after birth, and as much as possible during the first few weeks, creates an emotional bond that helps with breastfeeding success. Remember, you and your baby are learning about this process together.

The skin of your breasts is very delicate and sensitive. Proper latch is important in preventing nipple trauma and soreness. Avoid using soap on your nipples, to prevent dryness and irritation. Putting a drop of your colostrum or milk onto your nipples after nursing will also help to prevent dryness. You can also use a medical-grade lanolin. If your baby has a little trouble mastering the skill of latching at first, hydrogel pads are also great for soothing sore nipples. Keep trying - it will get easier with practice.

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.

While taking care of your baby, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated and resting as much as possible will help keep your energy up.

usic lessons for kids sometimes get a bad reputation. The assumption can be that students are forced to play through music they don’t like until a 30-minute timer goes off. Then they have to do it again the next week. Ryan Freeman has always had a dream to change that, and every day he’s making that dream a reality at The Launch Pad Rock School and Recording Studios. He and a friend opened the studio almost nine years ago in Plainfield, and it’s home to music lessons, a rock band program for kids, and a recording studio. “We wanted to make music lessons fun again,” Freeman says. Freeman and his friend T.J. Hampton have been close for years; in fact, they met at a church conference when Freeman was 18 years old. Hampton needed a drummer at his church, so Freeman took the job. Through many discussions, they dreamt

Once they learn to play a song they love, they’re usually inspired to keep playing for months and maybe even years.” As far as instruments go, The Launch Pad teaches a wide range. Kids can take lessons on drums, guitar, bass, piano and keyboard. They can take vocal lessons, and Freeman also offers electronic production and recording lessons in his studio. His business doesn’t stop there. His hope is that the lessons lead the kids into an even bigger opportunity. “The ultimate goal is to get them plugged into our Rock Band program,” Freeman says. “We started that six years ago, and it’s where they audition and we place them in bands together.” The bands include students in middle school and high school. They are placed together in groups based on skill level, and each band fills out with a vocalist, bass player, guitar player, drummer and keyboardist. Bands practice together, almost like a group lesson, throughout the year, and then perform at gigs around the city. “By the end of the year, they know about 15 to 20 songs and they play at places like local festivals, charity events, and outdoor summer and fall concerts,” Freeman says. “It’s really amazing to see how fast they grow when they play together with their peers.” Before the pandemic, The Launch Pad had six bands rocking out around Hendricks County, playing at places like The Shops at Perry Crossing, Hummel Park, the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds, and the Quaker Day Festival. Freeman hopes to get a few bands put together this fall. The Rock Band program plays into Freeman’s vision of launching musicians out of Plainfield. 28 / PLAINFIELD MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2021 / TownePost.com

“YEARS AND YEARS FROM NOW, WE WANT PEOPLE TO WONDER, ‘WHY ARE ALL THESE AWESOME MUSICIANS COMING FROM PLAINFIELD? WE ARE ALREADY STARTING TO SEE KIDS WE’VE TAUGHT GRADUATE AND PLAY PROFESSIONALLY AFTER COLLEGE. IT’S REALLY COOL.” - RYAN FREEMAN “Years and years from now, we want people to wonder, ‘Why are all these awesome musicians coming from Plainfield?’” Freeman says. “We are already starting to see kids we’ve taught graduate and play professionally after college. It’s really cool.” In addition to lessons and the Rock Band program, Freeman gets to flex his producer muscles by giving recording lessons or renting out the studio to musicians who want to record and produce an album. Often local musicians want to produce an album. Some know exactly how they want to make the album, while others want Freeman to participate in a producer role.

“It’s like building a house in a lot of ways,” Freeman says. “As a recording engineer, I get to see the skeleton of a song and help build it to the artist’s final vision. Seeing them come back, and walk down these stairs and hand me the finished album we all worked so hard on, is a really proud moment.” He’s had many proud moments, as more than 100 albums have been recorded in The Launch Pad studio. Having grown up around music, Freeman draws on his own experience of learning through playing in groups. His dad is a bass player and led worship services at their church while Freeman was growing up. His dad also spent a lot of time playing in a band at local gigs. Freeman remembers there were always instruments around the house, and as a kid he’d pick them up and start playing.

eventually pick up drums and play at many churches and shows. He began to play at gigs with his dad and other musicians at the age of 14. “Together we have this rhythmic bond,” Freeman says. “He’s my favorite bass player in the world. Any time I got to play with my dad and his friends were some of my greatest memories as a child.” His experiences performing and playing in groups guide his work teaching music lessons. Working with others and playing great music are key components in his work. There are six members on staff including Freeman. His wife Kristyana teaches vocal lessons and handles much of the administrative work, and the rest of the staff is made up of talented, enthusiastic teachers. “We started this place for kids who aren’t going to necessarily do sports or even high school band programs,” Freeman says. “This place is run by musicians, for musicians. The musical family around here is tightknit. The music will always be first for us.” He loves being in Plainfield, and his school has been embraced fully. Tuition is monthly, and includes four to five lessons for the month with no contracts. Lessons are one-on-one, last half an hour, and are available to adults as well. Freeman’s dream isn’t just to teach music it’s to empower and equip others. “Music gives me life,” Freeman says. “I want to share the joy that music has brought me over all these years. In a lot of ways, the music is a byproduct of a greater thing we’re doing by being a positive influence in kids’ lives. We are all about helping them find their confidence in something they can carry on into adulthood.” The Launch Pad is located at 301 South Center Street in Plainfield.
