She’s more than just a pageant winner. In fact, Jordan Weiter, reigning Miss Kentucky USA 2019, never competed in a pageant until January 27, 2019. “I am very competitive and always up for a challenge, and I thought pageantry offered that in a different way for me,” Weiter says. Weiter isn’t your typical beauty queen. For most of her childhood, she focused on playing volleyball, lacrosse and flag football. Currently, she is pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kentucky. She is enrolled in the University’s honors program and was admitted into the National Mechanical Engineering Honors Society.

With her focus on sports and academics, Weiter’s parents received quite the surprise when she announced she would be a contestant in the Miss Kentucky USA pageant as her first pageant. “I totally came out of left field with the idea, but my parents have always encouraged me to go after whatever I wanted to accomplish,” Weiter says. So, she traded in her sports equipment and cleats for a chance at the crown in the Miss Kentucky USA pageant. “The pageant was completely different than what I expected,” she says. “I didn’t really do pageant hair and makeup before, so I was surprised that everyone had full hair and makeup at orientation. I was one of the few that wasn’t as made up as the other girls.”

Weiter forged her own path during the pageant. She was one of the few contestants without a collection of coaches advising her on hair, makeup, interview questions, personal training and mental strategy. Typically, pageant contestants bring on coaches to consult them throughout the pageant. “It’s definitely a whirlwind roller coaster, but in the most fun way,” she says. “It’s a once in a lifetime thing.” Weiter says she’s found a new side of her, but still remains the same person on the inside. “I still wear hangout clothes, joggers and t-shirts,” she says. “I love being able to strip down without hair and makeup, but I’ve learned to enjoy the ‘getting ready’ process more.

Weiter learned much from her experience through the people she met and her fellow contestants. “Pageantry is a mental game,” she says. “It’s so easy to get in your head, but if you don’t let things affect you and stay mentally strong, the competition is so much easier. Have fun with it and enjoy the process.” While pageants are a far cry from her previous experiences, Weiter has always challenged the standards of society. “I want to be a representation that women can be in STEM fields,” Weiter says. “A lot of times we underestimate ourselves as women. We can be engineers and compete in pageants and you don’t have to sacrifice who you are to achieve your dreams. “There are so many more males than females in my engineering classes, but the more people I see coming into freshmen classes, the more women there are.”

“ I wo u ld li ke t o speak to schools a n d ki d s t o g e t my vo i c e o u t t h e r e a b o u t ST E M f i e ld s . ” She has since used her platform to motivate women to enter the STEM field and more male-dominated fields. During her reign as Miss Kentucky USA, she intends to focus on outreach to the younger generation of students and advocate for education of STEM-related fields for women in the U.S. and in third world countries. “I would like to speak to schools and kids to get my voice out there about STEM fields,” she says. “I hope that all younger generations will allow themselves to try any field regardless of whether it’s male or female-dominated.” Weiter also works closely with Engineering Without Borders USA, an initiative that partners with communities around the world to satisfy basic human needs, like clean water or solar panels for power. She plans on traveling to Africa and South American to volunteer. “We do a lot that flies under the radar, but there is a big need for water distribution, storage for crops and water wells as a way to provide clean drinking water to the communities,” Weiter says.” As for any words of wisdom for anyone who may consider doing something out of the ordinary, Weiter says, “In order to compete well, you have to know yourself and be yourself. You have to compete with yourself.” After Weiter passes the crown, she plans to continue her work in the engineering field as well as her work with Engineering Without Borders.

TAKING THE STAGE THEATRE 502 DEBUTS NEW PLAY THROUGHOUT JANUARY Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

Born and raised in Louisville, Diana Grisanti came from a large family who equally adored sports and theatre. In fact, Grisanti admits that she sometimes uses the word “halftime” instead of “intermission” and vice versa when speaking about theatre and sporting events. As a teenager, Grisanti attended Commonwealth Theatre Center in Louisville (formerly the Waldon Theatre).

Theatre of Louisville where she had the joy of meeting other playwrights. She also studied for two years in Mexico. While there she wrote a play called “Semantics” that got her into graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin. “Semantics” is about language, wealth, US paternalism and the limits of good intentions.

with Mike Brooks (the founder who stepped down in 2006), Grisanti and her husband took over as co-artistic directors in 2019.

“The program at UT Austin was sort of two programs in one,” Grisanti says. “As a writer, my colleagues were playwrights, poets and fiction writers. But then, on the theatre side of it, I was collaborating with designers, actors and directors. So I had multiple communities in one.”

Though Theatre 502 doesn’t have a dedicated space, they hold the majority of their performances in Baron’s Theater, an old magic theater located on Main Street.

“That’s where I found my people — other theatre nerds,” she says. Though she had fun acting and singing, deep down she knew she didn’t want to pursue performing as a career. Then she stumbled upon “the literary side of Following graduate school, Grisanti making theatre,” and knew immediately she returned to Louisville with her husband, had found her purpose in playwrighting. Steve, also a playwright. They began working as Playwrights-in-Residence with She studied dramaturgy and playwrighting Theatre 502, a small company that opened at the University of Iowa. After college, in 2011. Initially run by Amy Attaway and she completed an internship at the Actors Gil Reyes (co-artistic directors), along JANUARY 2020

“It’s been intense and amazing, nuts and awesome,” Grisanti says. “It was unexpected, but it felt like the right step for all of us.”

“It’s a strange little space that we’ve come to love,” says Grisanti, noting that 100 people can fit in the building though she prefers setting it up cabaret style with tables, which cuts seating in half. “Every show is sort of its own thing. You have to calibrate the space to the show,” says Grisanti, who is biased to the smaller theatres. “I like to feel connected to what’s there.”

Family-owned and operated since 1979, Scheller’s is your one stop fitness & bicycle retailer. Typically, they fill the house as the theatre has a good reputation in the city for doing polished work. Still, she says she’d love for word to spread and for everyone in Jefferson County and beyond to come see their shows. Historically, Theatre 502 has put on three shows per year on the main stage with sometimes a couple of smaller, less produced productions on the side. Grisanti, who calls this a rebuilding year, has shifted the model of theatre from traditional seasons to project-to-project. “Steve and I are interested in producing plays by other writers, but we also want to carve out a space if we want to write something new or create something with a group of people in the room,” Grisanti says. “Basically, we’re just trying to give ourselves maximum flexibility.” Next up is the play Grisanti wrote called “Lawbreakers: A Fast and Furious History of Women’s Suffrage” which opens in January and runs for four weeks. When she was commissioned to write it, she was excited but anxious because she wanted to get it right. She did a ton of research to ensure that the play featured not just those we always

“Gasping Whiteness” by Will MacAdams, which is a play, community workshop and anti-racist fundraiser. Plus, Grisanti and her spouse are collaborating with senior theater majors at Uof L to draft a play.

“I honestly don’t know how they had the time in their day to do all of these amazing things,” Grisanti says. Told through the perspective of two teenage black stepsisters who are seniors in high school, through magic they go back in time to learn about all of these black suffragists who were doing work in the 1800s and early 1900s. “Lawbreakers” is focused on women of color, specifically black women who were working against multiple injustices.

“We’ll do an invited reading and produce that play a year form this spring,” Grisanti says. “We have multiple irons in the fire.” When it comes to writing plays, Grisanti says that if she’s focused, she can complete a draft in two to three weeks. When her son, Victor, was born three years ago, it actually helped sharpen her concentration.

“It’s one of the trickiest plays I’ve ever written because so many young people are going to see it,” Grisanti adds. “At the end of the day, I want them to leave the theatre excited about voting.”

The topics of those plays vary, though there are themes that show up in a lot of her work. For instance, she’s intrigued by the notion of good intentions that don’t pan out. Plus, all of her work is feminist in nature.

Grisanti is also producing a show called

“I always want to see more women on stage,”

taking a moment to examine yourself and your own life. Theatre provides that opportunity,” Grisanti says.

She has taught every level, from PreK through college and adult. Currently, she’s teaching a playwriting class at the Commonwealth Theatre Center. She’s also teaching after-school drama programs at Looking for Lilith Theatre Company.

She notes that theatre is also communal.

“I’m constantly hustling on the teaching end because rarely can you make a living just writing plays. There are maybe five playwrights who do and the rest of us need a steady day job or a million side jobs to make ends meet.” Grisanti and her husband are passionate about theatre and the arts because it lets society take a pause from our real lives and consider what it means to be a person. “It makes us reflect on what our responsibility is to other people — just

“There’s something to be said for going into a room and everybody turning off their phones so that they may all participate in the same story. That so rarely happens,” Grisanti says. “With each play, you’re building a community in the rehearsal room and then you’re inviting more people into that community when you open the play.” And none of this even scratches the surface of all of the amazing life skills that theatre teaches — like how to work as a group and how to meet deadlines. “People in the business world are fools to not hire theatre people because we are really good at working under pressure,” Grisanti says.

REJUV MEDICAL 9204 Taylorsville Road Suite 206 Louisville, KY 502-785-7480 rejuvmedicalky.com

Dr. John Baird’s own health journey inspired him to open Rejuv Medical, where he helps hundreds of patients each year through functional medicine. The Fern Creek native earned his medical degree in 1992 and quickly became burnt out from the long hours he was working. “I was trying to figure out why I was feeling

so bad all the time,” says Dr. Baird, who took on moonlight shifts in the emergency room during his already stressful residency. “I was working with a physical trainer but gaining weight, and I was sore and tired all the time.” Dr. Baird met with a chiropractor who told him about adrenal fatigue and found that through lifestyle changes and integrative medicine concepts he began to feel better. JANUARY 2020

Functional medicine, which was started by Dr. Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D. about 20 years ago, looks at discovering the root cause of why a person is sick, instead of masking the symptoms with medications. Medical students are inundated with promotions and marketing by pharmaceutical companies throughout their educational experience, which Dr. Baird says leads to a heavy reliance on diagnosing and treating patients with medication.

holistic approach to medicine, he has been able to help patients regain better motor control, overcome intestinal issues and feel better overall.

“What they don’t teach medical students is what to do when medication doesn’t work,” Dr. Baird says. “Ninety percent of the issues we deal with in medicine are chronic, and we’ve made very little improvements over time. Functional medicine is just a different way of looking at things using specialized testing and improving lifestyles.” Dr. Baird works with clients on improving their diet and sleep habits, stress management and exercise and movements to improve overall health. He looks at the entire person and how they can deal with their emotional needs. “We treat the whole person,” says Dr. Baird, who has treated more than 10,000 patients using these principles. At Rejuv Medical, Dr. Baird helps patients with issues including peripheral neuropathy, obesity, thyroid disorders, infertility and PCOS and more. His services include hormone replacement therapy, testosterone replacement for men and even stem cell signaling. After Dr. Baird completed his residency and other training programs, he moved back to Louisville where he became the first doctor to have a full-time practice doing hormone replacement therapy.

“We’ve been able to completely resolve more than 80% of cases of IBS that have come to us using this method,” he adds. “That’s life-changing for people who couldn’t get out of the house because they were constantly suffering from diarrhea, constipation and bloating.” fat cells and gets rid of fat,” Dr. Baird says. “This allows people to lose two to eight inches of body fat in one session, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, alleviates pain and reverses neuropathy.” The therapy is great for patients suffering from fibromyalgia or chronic lower back pain and, in a more cosmetic sense, can take years off the face by reducing those fine lines. Throughout his more than 25 years of medical experience, Dr. Baird has gained great experience working with those who suffer from chronic pain and who deal with crippling side effects of autoimmune disease on a daily basis. By taking a

“We offer the most comprehensive hormone therapy in the area,” he says. “Louisville is still behind the curve in this area and remains one of the most obese cities in the U.S.” Patients at Rejuv Medical can opt to do Red Light Therapy, resulting in incredible spot reduction of excess fat in key trouble spots around the body. The technology was first discovered by NASA to treat astronauts coming back from space. They found that certain wavelengths of light gave energy to the body, almost like a grow light for plants. “In the process of studying this, they found that if you put the light over an area of the skin with a lot of fat, it pokes holes in the JANUARY 2020

Dr. Baird strives to provide a concierge level of care to his patients, spending 30 minutes to an hour with each person per appointment and giving out his cell phone number so patients can text or call at any time to get help. “We’re medical detectives,” Dr. Baird says of his practice. “We treat things other people can’t help.” Conveniently located at 9204 Taylorsville Road Suite 206 (in the same building as Taco Luchador), Rejuv Medical is open for appointments Monday through Friday. BOWMAN FIELD TO CELEBRATE 100TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2020 Writer / Anna Kate Goshko Photography Provided

Historic Bowman Field, a Louisville icon and an aviation treasure, was established nearly 100 years ago. One of the longestrunning commercial airports in the United States, Bowman Field is situated on 426 acres with three buildings and is on the National Register of Historic Places. You might pass by this iconic landmark and not think much of it - there’s a dive bar and

a seemingly vacant building nearby. But this historic treasure has plenty of people striving to keep its history alive. During World War II Bowman Field served as one of the nation’s most prestigious training bases and as the nation’s busiest airport. It was also the Air Force’s school for flight surgeons, medical technicians and flight nurses. Today Bowman Field is no longer bustling with war-torn aircraft or soldiers JANUARY 2020

in training, and now serves a different purpose - sharing history. Between military and civilian involvement, it’s hard to find someone who has not been touched by Bowman Field. Since 2014 Bowman Field officials have hosted BowmanFest, a celebration of the iconic Louisville landmark. The event includes military and civilian aircraft exhibits, an airshow, plane rides, reenactments and live music.

Festival director Pat MacDonald developed the event in anticipation of Bowman’s 100th anniversary in 2020. At the festival, attendees can get a taste of what a soldier might encounter in years past. Military tents from previous wars, restored aircraft and live music all bring yesteryear back to life through hands-on experiences. Those that attendeding the festival each year in October might see future soldiers peering through the belly of a massive military helicopter, or testing their imagination while sitting in the cockpit of a personal aircraft. It’s all a part of a collective effort to keep Bowman Field’s history alive. “Word spread pretty quickly about the festival and a lot of people wanted to be involved,” MacDonald says. “There’s a community of airshows and festivals celebrated around the country. Those that are involved come and help us find the historic aircraft that are important to the history of the field.”

More than 30 military and civilian airplanes were shown at the previous festival, along with military re-enactors and encampments, historic military and aviation exhibits, vintage cars, motorcycles and military vehicles. The C-130 Hercules, one of the largest aircraft to ever land at Bowman, was also present with other aircraft flyovers and air show maneuvers.

Adults can also participate in Four Roses Bourbon tastings as well as educational sessions, craft beer and food trucks. MacDonald believes that in order to keep history alive for younger generations, experiences like BowmanFest are necessary. “It’s such a unique experience and we didn’t want the anniversary to pass without Bowman getting the recognition it deserves,” he says. Each year MacDonald and his team have slowly expanded the festival, incorporating a mix of both military and civilian aircraft. Feedback from the community fuels ideas for the following year, and people come from all over the state to experience the history of Bowman Field. “Since 9/11 the (security) fences have gotten taller, and there’s no longer a big push to get people on the field to experience the aircraft and aviation

5 TIPS TO HELP KEEP YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided

It’s that time of year again — the time when we all start thinking about what we’d like to do more of or be better at in the coming year. Did you know people have been setting New Year’s resolutions for more than 4,000 years! It’s assumed almost everyone has made a New Year’s resolution — and then broken it. It’s crazy,

I know, but if you think about it, even if you fail, it’s a great way to kick off a new year. A resolution is technically something we choose to do, or not to do, but here are a few tips for how you can choose to keep those resolutions in 2020. 1. MAKE A LIST Many people make lists on the daily. Whether it’s a to-do list or shopping list, JANUARY 2020

we like to see things we need to do and what we’ve completed. It’s a visual thing. Sometimes just having something written down on paper helps you stick to it. It also makes it more real. So write out your resolutions on paper or even better get fancy and frame them! But even without a frame, put it somewhere you’ll see it every day so you are reminded of what you resolved to do.

2. C HOOSE THE RIGHT RESOLUTIONS The top three resolutions most years are related to health and fitness, but does that work for you? It might, but it might not. Don’t feel like you have to pick a resolution based on what everyone else is doing or usually does. Be original. Stay true to you and choose a resolution that really matters to you. If you can really get behind something, you’ll have better success with accomplishing it!

3. TRY MINI-GOALS Mini goals or mini resolutions are a great way to reach a big goal with baby steps! It alleviates the making of a larger, terrifying and daunting resolution and instead breaks it up to make it more manageable. Mini goals are easier and typically require less time. Try to set a smaller goal for each month and by the time you complete all 12 months, you’ll have achieved that giant goal you weren’t quite sure you could take on in January. Setting mini-goals will help you accomplish resolutions in a more incremental way and stay on track all year long!

4. HAVE A BUDDY Accountability is a huge part of forging through tough times and keeping our resolutions in the New Year. Doing it on your own can be hard. But you don’t have to do it all by yourself. Find a friend who has the same goals for the year or similar ones who can keep you motivated when times get tough. Even telling someone your resolutions can keep you accountable. They can ask you how things are going and understand when you need a little pick me up or break. It’s always more fun to do things with friends, and New Year’s resolutions are no different. 5. REWARD YOURSELF Everyone does better with a reward dangling in front of them. Rewards make us all feel good. Maybe if you are working on your food intake, you have a cheat

day if you can get through two weeks of staying on track. Perhaps if you resolved to journal every day, once you’ve done it for a month, treat yourself with a cool new pen! If you were trying to give up those coffee shop visits to save more money, treat yourself to one cup of coffee if you stuck to it for 15 days in a row! Once you’ve completed a resolution, no matter how big or small, rewards can continue to help us move towards our goals. It keeps us motivated and reminds us that we are doing a good job. No matter how it goes this coming year, just do your best. Do what works for you and if you need help sticking to something, make sure to ask for help. Just choosing to embrace change or taking on new challenges in the New Year is a huge step for a lot of people and we believe in you! Wishing you the best success in your resolutions and a wonderful 2020!

TOM MABE TALKS COMEDY CAREER, FAMILY AND CALLING LOUISVILLE HOME Writer / Tyrel Kessinger Photographer / Terrance Mason

Tom Mabe may not be originally from the east end of Louisville, but he’s been here more than long enough to call it his rightful home. Originally from Bullitt County, Mabe moved here 25 years ago, bringing along with him a particular sense of comedy and hard work that has led him on a very fascinating life journey that has led him all over the country. Mabe is mostly known for humor but it didn’t start out that way for him. Music was his first calling. “I come from a family full of musicians and songwriters,” Mabe says. “Which is what I was doing up until the late 90s.”

music, which is what he initially hoped for. “They wanted me to come meet with Scott Hendricks, who is Nashville royalty, behind every other major country star,” Mabe says. “I thought he must have heard one of my songs or something but it turns out someone sent him a cassette tape of me messing with telemarketers.” Mabe still finds it hard to believe sometimes. “I got a six-album deal on Virgin Records from a recording I made with a $37 answering machine messing with telemarketers,” he says.

From there, as they say, the sky was the limit, and Mabe’s star continued to rise. “I went into TV,” he says. “I had a show Out of the blue, Mabe received a call from on CMT called “Mabe In America.” I did Virgin Records Nashville, though not for his a movie with Lions Gate called “Natural

Born Pranksters.” Now I create viral videos for myself and clients like DreamWorks, Subaru, Walmart, Boost Mobile, to name a few. I have over a billion views and four million followers on social media. One of my biggest accomplishments is when I had the number one video in the world and beat out Disney’s “Frozen” on Adweek’s top 10 viral videos.” For those wondering what might have prompted such a momentous feat, Mabe happily elaborates the scenario. “My best friend and writing partner, Jim Clark, took a guy who was passed out from drinking too much and placed him in a fake hospital room and when he woke we were dressed like doctors and we told him he had been in a coma for 10 years,” he says. Beyond the entertainment aspect Mabe, not

one to rest on his laurels, found himself wearing other hats of show business, such as his trying his hand at being a talent agent. “About 12 years ago I started leveraging my fanbase and contacts to develop other acts,” he says. “I discovered a young girl by the name of Kelsea Ballerini and followed her through her journey trying to navigate the Nashville scene. She now has a handful of number one hits and is the next Taylor Swift.” Of course, Mabe still loves a good prank. One of his more recent comedic ideas took place right here in Louisville in 2015. “I had a concept for a video showing you can’t judge a book by its cover,” he says. “The idea would be that we would get four or five guys dressed like thugs, put them in nice subdivisions in Eastern Jefferson County, have them go up to houses and knock on strangers’ doors. When the homeowner finally opens the door they discover the guys aren’t there to rob them, they are there to sing Christmas carols.”

Financial Life Planning Centered on You!

Outside of being in the limelight, Mabe also shares a passion for helping others in need, donating both his time and his talents to help in ways that are unique to him. “I have a real passion for dogs and underdogs,” Mabe says. “I have done several videos featuring the Humane Society and other nonprofits that benefit the welfare of animals. I’m also currently managing and developing a former homeless man named “Homeless Herbie.” Our videos for him have gotten more than 150 million views and we’re taking our message to the masses with a tour starting late summer.” Beyond his work, Mabe enjoys spending time with his family, his church, his five dogs that he calls his “fur babies.”

He and wife of 25 years, Melanie, have two children, Josh and Mack and all are members of the Jeffersontown Christian Church. His devotion to his faith even factors into his newest endeavor. “Currently, I am working on a reality show called Campbellsville University the real CU, a faith-based college in the middle of Kentucky,” he says. “It’s featured on Facebook watch and our second season comes out mid-spring.” As a man of many ventures, Mabe has also recently delved into the hemp business as well. “Like myself, my son has Tourette syndrome, though more of a verbal tic, and right before we were going to do deep brain stimulation my wife suggested we try CBD oil,” he says. “I was extremely hesitant at first but after some research, we gave it a shot and now my son tics a few times a day, as opposed to once every

eight to 12 seconds. So I took one of my commercial properties and turned it into the Hemp Wellness Farm off Benson Parkway. My dream is for my son to run the shop one day.” Obviously, Mabe is and will always be a busy, sought after man and traveling still plays a large part in his work. But no matter what’s going on in his life, Mabe always makes time to hang out and enjoy his long adopted hometown of Jeffersontown and all the things it has to offer. “I drive to Nashville or fly to Los Angeles a couple of times a month but always make it back home,” he says. “I don’t have to travel as much nowadays. My kids used to think I lived at the airport. But now on any given night, you’ll see me in J-Town at Louisville Pizza or the Recbar. I have canceled shows to not miss the Gaslight Festival.” Mabe shrugs, because the reason is obvious. “This is home.”
