TURNING THE PAGE RECENTLY RENOVATED ST. MATTHEWS ELINE LIBRARY OFFERS DIVERSE AMENITIES AND SERVICES Writer / Julie Engelhardt Photography Provided

The St. Matthews Eline Library has been a community mainstay for more than sixty years, and is greatly appreciated by the residents and patrons who use its services. The library recently underwent extensive refurbishment and expansion, and was closed for nearly nine months during the process. The sleek, updated facility reopened on May 9, 2019, to the delight of St. Matthews residents. The library was originally located above a bank building on Shelbyville Road. It

was then moved to a house on Brown Avenue, and in 1958 made another move to Church Way. Land belonging to the Eline family, which sat behind the St. Matthews Methodist Church, was donated for the library in memory of Sidney Eline, Jr., who was killed in World War II. The library quickly became a focal point for the neighborhood. In 1993 the city acquired a three-story building on Grandview Avenue that had once been Greathouse Elementary School and, subsequently, Futural Federal Savings and Loan. City leaders in St. Matthews began a million-dollar remodeling project

on the structure, resulting in a unified city hall that housed the clerk’s office, police department, Beargrass-St. Matthews Historical Society, and library. Due to the generosity of former Mayor Art Draut and the city council, the library was relocated to a new space on April 11, 1994. Twenty-five years later, the library’s updates are welcome additions, bringing the structure into the 21st century. The library now spans 19,000 square feet and holds 70,000 books, all on one level. This allows for easy access for all members of the community. St. Matthews Mayor Rick Tonini and the St. Matthews City

Council spearheaded the renovation of the St. Matthews Eline Library, as part of a comprehensive $10 million project to remodel the city hall and police headquarters. The Louisville Metro Government contributed $1 million towards the library portion of the project. Although it was difficult for patrons during the closure, Assistant Branch Manager Micah Followay says the community is happy with the changes. “The response has been amazing,” he says. “Everybody’s very pleased with how it looks. We’ve nearly doubled in size. Every part of the library has its own little aspect, which makes it a unique experience for our patrons.” The exterior has clean, modern lines, while the interior is filled with bright overhead lights, comfortable seating areas and huge picture windows that allow for natural light to shine through.

In the adult wing of the library, visitors will find semi-enclosed seating areas with small tables and chairs, allowing patrons to study or interact quietly. These areas are situated near picture windows that look onto the green space and neighborhood surrounding the library. The tables are equipped with electrical outlets and USB charging docks. Against another bank of windows, comfortable chairs are available for reading a favorite book or magazine. The adult section also houses the general computer area, which is open to the public, and where computer classes in Microsoft Word and Excel are taught. The library now has two meeting spaces. The small room holds up to eight people, and is equipped with both HDMI capability and a big-screen television. The large room holds up to 100 people, and is equipped with a surround-sound audio system, projection capabilities, a DVD player, a PA system, and a sound system for patrons who wear telecoil hearing aids.

The children’s room is a destination for younger readers and their parents or caregivers. Hundreds of colorful picture books are displayed on shelves and on top of book cases, offering easy access. A new story-time area with tiered seating provides a space for the library’s weekly programs.

Followay is pleased that the library features a new section where teens can sit and relax. “The old structure just had [patrons] sitting next to the circulation desk, and it really didn’t have a very personal feeling to it,” he says. “Now we have two study tables where they can do work or read, plus these cubicles have panels that can be changed to any color, giving each study block its own personality.”

“We have apps where people can download books, magazines, audio books and music from the comfort of their own home,” Followay says. “They just need to have a library card, and be in good standing when it comes to paying their fines. We see an influx of people coming in who have an e-reader, Kindle or iPad, who want to get the app to download the materials. Our staff will help them access those features.”

The library also offers a service that brings books to homebound senior citizens and those who aren’t able to visit the library. “For adults, we have our book discussion group and a film discussion group,” Followay says. “The adult and kids staff work with other organizations to bring in speakers. We had someone in from Bowman Field doing a presentation about the history of the airport and their aviation school. We also had a program called ‘Louisville Then and Now’, discussing the city’s history, which brought in fifty-one people.” The St. Matthews Eline Library is located at 3940 Grandview Avenue in Louisville. FOREST BATHING BEING OUTSIDE IN NATURE REDUCES STRESS & INCREASES PRODUCTIVITY Writer / Warren Maddox, Interpretive Ranger

Forest bathing. No, we’re not talking about stripping down to your birthday suit and running through the woods. Forest bathing is simply the immersion of one’s five senses in the natural environment while on a jaunt through the woods. The practice of forest bathing originated in Japan, where it is known as “shinrinyoku.” In a society known for its work ethic, technology and urban infrastructure, you might not think unplugging and taking a walk through the woods would be a priority in Japan, but researchers are now discovering promising evidence of a secret known to happy hippies for

While hiking through the park, listen for the variety of calls from our avian friends, whether it be the “chirp” of the Red-winged Blackbird in our riparian habitats or the “churee” of the Kentucky Warbler hiding in the flower patches and grasslands. Stop and feel the velvety trunk of the Staghorn Sumac that resembles the antlers of young bucks. Maybe taste a sweet mulberry from one of the many Mulberry trees dotting the creek line, hearing the water’s riffles in the distance. Find a good shady spot under a big Luckily for us Kentuckians, we have lots of bark-shedding sycamore and trace its mazeforest bathing opportunities. Immersion in nature has positive impacts on our brains and bodies. Increasing productivity, decreasing stress levels and encouraging overall happiness in participants are just some of the tangible effects of short-term forest bathing practices. But as with other medicines, dosage matters. The higher the dosage, or the more time spent outside in nature, the greater the effect. Trail from the Marshall Sprayground in Beckley Creek Park. If you are someone who likes a few less anthrophonic sounds during your forest bathing, make your way further south. In Turkey Run Park, you’ll discover your reflection in the still ponds along your trek of the paved path of Bullfrog Crossing. Close your eyes and smell the cedar grove all around. Try to guess where the turtles (who bob their timid heads, using algae as camouflage) may show themselves next. Take in the local bird choir harmonizing in their wetlands habitat as you savor your favorite herbal tea. And if inner peace somehow still evades you, move even further south to Karst Climb in Broad Run! Karst Climb is a short hike that packs a punch and is guaranteed to get your endorphins pumping. Starting at the lowest elevation point, it’s a hike straight up toward Big Vista Overlook, where you’ll pass an old chimney revealing past uses of

the land. Travel a bit further and your ears might catch a waterfall cascading along the limestone bed. You may be tempted to let the soothing white noise lull you into a slumber, atop a soft patch of grass neighboring a grove of wildflowers. Further still up the climb, dip your hand in the streams to cool your head as you venture higher and higher, eventually reaching the trailhead emerging near the open area of Highland Crossing. Now that your legs feel the burn, sit and relax at the vista, survey the farmlands from your birds’ eye view. Inhale a few deep breaths and loosen into becoming a part of the vista itself. Now that’s a forest bath! Hankering yet for one of your own? Test these awarenessbuilding nature activities for yourself and let us know how it goes. Want to learn more about your brain on nature? If so, pick up a copy of The Nature Fix by Florence Williams. Looking forward to seeing lots of fellow forest bathers out on the trails!

A SOUND APPROACH The Louisville Orchestra is Pushing Into New Musical Territories Under the Direction of Teddy Abrams Writer / Shannon Siders Photography Provided

When Teddy Abrams was considering taking over as music director for the Louisville Orchestra in 2013, he saw great potential in making Louisville his new home. Now wrapping up his sixth season at the helm, he’s never been more confident in his decision. “Everything I saw before I got the job was very indicative of the possibilities of what this city could be, and what the orchestra could be,” Abrams says. At just 32 years old, Abrams has received acclaim and praise within the music industry, leading the Louisville Orchestra to impressive heights. “Louisville was already an amazing city, and I saw the ingredients there to take the

artistic community - and possibly even the artistic philosophy, but encouraging of it. whole city - to a new level,” he says. “A major urban growth spurt, revitalizations, and an Jim James, frontman for musical act My artistic flowering have taken place.” Morning Jacket, recently teamed up with Abrams and the Louisville Orchestra to Although he is originally from Berkeley, produce an album titled “The Order of California, Abrams will say he is from Nature”. The project had a special meaning Louisville when asked. for an orchestra of our size to sign with any label, much less a major label, and it’s been really cool to see the relationship that’s developed. [ James] is a very special collaborator and musical visionary. He’s open to letting people’s talent complement his. He provided seeds and foundation for each song, and was open to letting us explore orchestral colors you don’t have access to on a pop or rock album.” Typically, an orchestra may hope to sell a couple thousand copies of an album, and expect to play for small groups of local orchestra lovers and subscribers. “The Order of Nature” gave the Louisville Orchestra the opportunity to take their show on the road, with performances in several major U.S. cities including Chicago, New York and Seattle.

“Those shows have given us a great opportunity to really share what we’re doing here in Louisville with other orchestras and communities where [ James] has a following,” Abrams says. The album had a national rollout, with a review in Rolling Stone and the opportunity to appear on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”. “That was an amazing experience that orchestras usually never get a taste of,” Abrams says. “It was a really proud moment for all of us representing the city. Part of our mission is to really carry the banner for Louisville, and make positive associations with the town. We want to increase the understanding of how special Louisville is and how creative our arts community is.” The national attention will continue into 2021, as it was recently announced that the Louisville Orchestra was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall as part of the “Carnegie Hall Presents” series. The orchestra will join James and the Louisville Ballet for a February 20 performance.

“[The Carnegie Hall leadership] has been keeping their eye on what we’ve been doing over the last several years, and it’s really wonderful that they’re inviting us to share that with a New York audience,” Abrams says. “We’re hoping to turn it into a weeklong festivity celebrating Louisville and Kentucky. This is an opportunity to redefine how people see our state, and New York is the place to do it.” The Carnegie Hall show won’t be the first taste of the Louisville Orchestra for New Yorkers. At the beginning of the current performance season, the city’s major classical radio station, WQXR, featured a live broadcast of the orchestra’s openingnight performance. Abrams and his team have continued to grow the Louisville Orchestra’s presence locally as well, with innovative performances and programs to keep locals engaged and coming back for more.

The 2019-2020 performance season will wrap up a bit earlier than usual, with the last performance slated for the end of April. On April 24, the orchestra will take the stage at one of the newest performance venues in the city, Old Forester’s Paristown Hall, followed by a show the next night at Whitney Hall. Both shows include a performance of “The Blue Hour,” a piece of music that has been played only one other time by an orchestra. One of the composers, Shara Nova, will join the orchestra as a vocalist for the performance.

“It’s a next-generation concert experience,” says Abrams of the Paristown shows. “We take several intermissions so people can socialize, buy drinks and hang out in an informal environment. The sound quality is very vibrant, and gives off more of a rock concert feel.”

Abrams has already seen an example of the city’s transformational possibilities over the last six years in his own NuLu neighborhood. The burgeoning entertainment district has received national attention, and has been part of what’s kept Abrams interested in sticking around.

As Abrams looks to the future, he is excited to continue creating immersive music pieces (a term he coined) in conjunction with the orchestra, similar to his award-winning composition, “The Greatest: Muhammad Ali”. “For me, the real change in this city’s artistic profile will occur when artists are moving to Louisville on their own, seeing it as a place they want to come live because the artistic environment aligns with their aesthetic,” Abrams says. GOVERNORS' CUP PLAYOFFS

Play All Day New Malibu Jack’s Indoor Theme Park Is A Family Affair Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing

In the 1950s, Vernon Hatton became a Kentucky basketball legend when he made a half-court shot to send the University of Kentucky into a third overtime in what resulted in a victory over Temple University. He went on to become an All-American and played in the NBA, but ultimately left the sport to become an auctioneer in Lexington, Kentucky - a career that suited him well. His sons, Steve, Jeff, and Terry, grew up in the auction business, watching their dad in action every Monday morning in a Lexington tobacco warehouse. “Dad was an entertainer,” Steve says. “He told stories and got people laughing. People drove several hours to come listen to him and eat chili dogs.” Steve and his brothers carried on the tradition until about 15 years ago, when they decided to branch out from the

auction business and open the Kentucky Basketball Academy, a five-court facility that held national basketball and volleyball tournaments. Steve’s son Tyler began working with his dad at age 12, acting as scorekeeper at basketball games. Though the family enjoyed aspects of the business, they dealt with a good bit of negativity. “Basketball tournaments had 40 teams and 39 of those teams lost, so you can imagine that there was a lot of complaining,” Steve says. “Just dealing with that negativity was an event itself.” Steve and his brothers thought about how great it would be to create a place that would foster nothing but good times and fun vibes. Steve had a friend who opened an outdoor family fun center in Kentucky, but the fickle midwestern weather was brutal for business and it closed after a few years. Steve began thinking about offering an indoor facility APRIL 2020

with similar amenities. In the meantime, Tyler was studying communications and advertising in college. He also served for a few years on a church mission trip to Argentina where he learned how much he enjoyed helping others and seeing joy in people’s eyes. “Dad was cooking up this idea of a family fun center with his brothers, and although I knew they were full of great ideas, I wanted to make sure they could refine those ideas,” says Tyler, who worked on branding the concept by creating logos and signage, and officially joined the family business after graduating from college. The family did some research and found that most arcades were dark and filled with neon. They chose to go in a different direction, envisioning a beach vibe that was bright, colorful and festive. In 2013 Steve and his brothers found an

old tennis center in the Lexington area that was for sale, and decided to take the plunge and open Malibu Jack’s Indoor Theme Park featuring electronic go-karts, laser tag, miniature golf, virtual reality activities, a basketball shootout and more. “We brought in palm trees, waterfalls, bright lights and a boardwalk to walk around,” Tyler says. “It got a lot of people’s attention. Nobody was putting in a huge tropical golf course inside.”

possible, and were closed to the public for just ten days. “That was pretty good considering all we had to do,” Steve says. The transition included taking apart and putting together rides, moving games, as well as hiring and training new staff members as the business grew from 35 to 100 employees. The size of the new location enabled the owners to increase their arcade offerings, add an 18-lane bowling alley, and include a high-speed Wave Rider that’s similar to the Super Himalaya ride at the state fair. In addition, a restaurant and bar will open this spring.

Investors came knocking and after a few years of success, the family decided to open another Malibu Jack’s in Louisville in 2016. The indoor theme park has been so popular that in December of 2019, the owners moved the business to a new location on Hurstbourne Parkway that nearly doubled their square footage from 65,000 to 120,000.

“People love being able to enjoy a nice meal right on site,” Steve says. “It enables them to stay here all day in this laid-back atmosphere.”

The family did their best to make the transition as fast and seamless as

flocked to the facility. “Everyone was so happy,” he says. “It’s just what Louisville needed.” People are drawn to the friendly competition of go-karts. For kids 10 and under, the Bounce Beach play area is also popular. “The only time a child cries at Bounce Beach is when parents tell them it’s time to leave,” says Steve, who offers special deals to nonprofit organizations like Angels in Disguise and Big Brothers Big Sisters. At the original location, Malibu Jack’s was known as a kids’ fun zone, so the owners did all they could to let the public know they had something for everyone - from toddlers to grandparents. Teenagers especially enjoy the indoor theme park for date nights, and adults can also have a ball. One of Steve’s fondest memories at Malibu Jack’s is when he was sitting by the waterfall under the palm trees, and a little girl walked by with her father and asked, “Daddy, is this paradise?” The dad replied, “It might be close, honey!” After working for so many years at the Kentucky Basketball Academy, Steve had gotten used to fielding complaints anytime someone approached him. Once he transitioned into the family fun business, he braced himself the first time an employee told him that a parent wanted to speak to him. As the parent started talking, he said to Steve, “Sir, do you own this place?”

pring has finally sprung. It’s that time of year when you want to feel refreshed and clean, and declutter your house while you’re at it. With the weather starting to warm up, you’ll want to start heading outside to enjoy the sun and fresh air. Nevertheless, we all have a need to clean this time of year - so what is the best way to tackle this year’s spring cleaning to-do list? It doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and it can even be fun. Getting the house in working order again feels good, and you can do it. Here are a few tips that will help you along to a very successful spring cleaning campaign.

TAKE IT ONE ROOM AT A TIME

CLEAR THE CLUTTER

Houses can be overwhelming when it comes to cleaning, so be sure to break your cleaning down into smaller, manageable projects. One easy way to do this is to think in terms of one room at a time. Use a room checklist as a place to start, and also as a way to prevent forgetting about items you might not always clean. If you’ve already cleaned some items in certain rooms then feel free to skip, but you are sure to find something that’s taken a back seat all winter and needs a deep clean. Start with rooms that get the most traffic so that if your plans get derailed, you’ll still have a sense of accomplishment.

One of the biggest and best parts of spring cleaning is the purging of anything and everything you don’t need anymore. The feeling of letting go is a major way to refresh your soul this spring. Think about this in four categories - trash or recycle, sell, donate, and, finally, put away. There are always things we want to keep, and some we can do without. Make piles for each. If you choose to sell, list items on Facebook Marketplace as you are setting those items aside. With regard to donations, see if you can fill a bag to donate every day for a month. You can also plan a garage sale - cleaning is so much easier with the clutter out of the way.

APRIL 2020

FAMILY FUN Get your family involved. Throw on some music and add in some family incentives to get everyone on the same page with donations and trash. There’s no need for you to do all the work! DON’T IGNORE SEASONAL CHORES We all know there are chores that should be done seasonally, and we typically ignore them. Now that the weather is getting nicer, tackle chores like cleaning grills, patios and windows. Doing these chores even once or twice a year will keep your house running smoothly and looking great. USE THE RIGHT TOOLS AND SUPPLIES There are many cleaning supplies and tools out there that companies want you to think that you need, but it’s better to refrain from buying everything. Having dozens and dozens of cleaning products on hand at all

times just clutters up the cabinets. Along with your mop, broom and vacuum, make sure you have a good all-purpose cleaner on hand for most projects. Other basics include an all-purpose powder or liquid cleaner for larger washable surfaces, an abrasive cleaner for small, heavily soiled areas, a nonabrasive cleaner for gentle cleaning on surfaces that scratch easily, chlorine bleach, glass cleaner, a furniture duster, and a toilet-bowl cleaner. These items should get you started quite nicely.

CALL IN THE PROS If your budget allows, there might be a few things you could take off of your list and bring in a professional to clean. Window, carpet and upholstery cleaning are much easier tasks for pros who do it all the time. Not only will this save you time, but it also might save you money as certain tasks often require tools you probably don’t have on hand.

Hopefully these tips will help to get your spring cleaning off to a great start this year. If you want more help, there are plenty of spring cleaning checklists out there with specific tasks to keep you on track. There’s no need to scour the web for hours and hours - search “Spring Cleaning Checklist” online and plenty of lists will pop up. Pick your favorite and go down the list until you are done (or exhausted, whichever comes first). Good luck!

B I S T R O L E R E L A I S O F F E R S A N E L E VAT E D YET RELAXED DINING EXPERIENCE Writer / Noelle Tennis Gulden Photography Provided

Anthony Dike was just 21 years old when he moved from Switzerland to the United States to learn commodity trading at American stock brokerage firm E.F. Hutton.

“I just got very lucky starting to work in very good places in New York,” says Dike, whose resume includes such culinary giants as Mortimer’s and La Goulue.

However, Dike quickly found out that the stock market wasn’t what he expected.

After nine years in New York, Dike was ready to move on and explore other parts of the country. He and renowned FrenchAmerican restaurateur Jean Denoyer decided to open Le Relais in Louisville.

“I did a few trades, but it didn’t make me feel good,” Dike says. “People are losing money and I’m still making money? It’s not right. So that was it.”

“I was still young and I wanted to try,” Dike says. “So we came here and I said, ‘Okay, we’ll open it and then I’ll move on.’ But that happened 32 years ago.”

During his brief time as a trader, Dike had picked up night shifts at several restaurants in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. When he decided he’d had enough of trading, Dike started working full time in some of New York City’s finest restaurants.

When you first step into the restaurant, it’s easy to imagine that nothing has changed since Dike and Denoyer first opened it 32 years ago. Perhaps that’s due to the timelessness of its location at Louisville’s historic Bowman Field airport.

The eatery is located in an administration building that was constructed in 1929. The space the restaurant occupies once served as the airport’s terminal, and the main lobby is available for private parties. It can accommodate up to 48 people for a sitdown dinner, and more for a cocktail party. Denoyer’s former wife, a Louisville native, originally proposed the unique location. Its art deco architecture was a perfect fit for Denoyer’s well-known style. Dike refers to it as New York chic with French appeal. While many aspects of the restaurant have remained the same - such as the walls, which were painted 32 years ago by a young German artist to look like wood paneling others have not. “We originally had a New York-style layout with the tables closer together,” Dike says.

30 / ST. MATTHEWS MAGAZINE / APRIL 2020 / StMatthewsMag.com

“That did not work well in Louisville. We opened up the space and people received it very well.” Most of what has changed, however, has had little to do with the space itself. “The location has been fantastic,” Dike says. “It has always had more positives than negatives - a huge parking lot, easy access from the interstate, the building itself. There’s fantastic outdoor seating facing the airport. That has done very well over the years.” Since becoming sole proprietor and owner of Bistro Le Relais, Dike has focused on making changes to help the restaurant adapt to a changing clientele. “The restaurant previously had such a high reputation,” Dike says. “We enjoyed it, but at the same time it sort of backfired on us a little bit. We’re trying to be as friendly as possible, not that kind of French reputation

of very strict. Of course you can have red wine with fish. Of course you can chill your red wine if you want to. The friendly French restaurant is what we’ve been trying to become.” Dike recalls what the restaurant was like before the shift. “We used to have a very high-end chef,” he says. “I was the maître d’, and I had an assistant and a cashier.“ Eventually his chef left to pursue another opportunity. “That’s when I sort of switched a little bit,” Dike says. “I stopped wearing a tie. That’s when we tweaked the menu to include items that are a little bit more bistro and a little less restaurant.” The establishment was renamed Bistro Le Relais, with the term bistro denoting a more casual dining experience.

“We have to open our arms and open our doors as much as we can, and just say, ‘Welcome,’â€? Dike says. While Dike is eager to welcome people who may have previously been intimidated by French cuisine, he doesn’t want to make changes that would upset his longtime clientele. Consequently, although he’s made the menu more approachable and has added a few healthy options, he’s been sure not to mess with what’s worked over the years. “People come here for escargot because no one does them drenched in butter and garlic like we do,â€? Dike says. “People come because we still make our own pâtĂŠ. People come because there are cream and wine shallots in a huge bowl of mussels.â€? Dike explains that Bistro Le Relais would be called an upscale bistro in France. “We still have tablecloths,â€? he says. “We still have some higher items on the menu.

We have the steak and French fries, the escargot, the mussels, the salads. All the desserts are very French traditional chocolate mousse, profiteroles, crème brĂťlĂŠe, the soufflĂŠs, and all that.â€? Dike feels that his future success depends on building upon what’s brought him this far - high-quality food and high-quality service. Having recently traveled in France with his girlfriend Amy, Dike is as confident about his continued success as ever before.

“We’re very proud of our wine list here, he says. “We have a very knowledgeable team that knows about their wines. Mostly French of course, but some American as well.

“We just got back from the south of France, and the food was very good, he says. “We went a little more Mediterranean style so we had more fish and all that, but I was sometimes comparing it with here, and I was very proud of the restaurant.

“It would be a food truck for catering maybe, or for doing lunch business, he says. “I have to do a lot more research still. It’s a fast-growing industry, but you need to cover all your bases. It could be another way to bring the restaurant out.

Dike is currently considering additional ways he can welcome people to Le Relais, and one of his ideas is to bring back wine tastings, with wine and food pairings.

Bistro Le Relais is located at Bowman Field, 2817 Taylorsville Road in Louisville. For more info, call 502-451-9020 and visit lerelaisrestaurant.com.

Dike is also considering adding a food truck component to his establishment.

TYLER LEVY HAS OVERCOME MANY CHALLENGES TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL EMPLOYEE Writer / Kathy Lynch Photography Provided

What keeps people coming back to a restaurant? Besides the food, neighborly atmosphere and hospitality, visitors look for a little extra attention, care and conversation from some very dedicated employees. According to Christine Stringer, manager of McAllister’s Deli on Breckinridge Lane in Louisville, the eatery has been hiring people with disabilities for the past 10 years although the establishment doesn’t actually work with a placement organization. Knowing its history of hiring and helping those with disabilities, both parents and job coaches from local groups like Dreams with Wings and the Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation don’t hesitate to connect with McAllister’s. Parents can get their kids involved with a vocational rehab facility, where job coaches

will teach them about interviewing and take them to an actual job interview. McAllister’s Deli welcomes job coaches to visit and help employees if needed.

According to Stringer, there are participants in these programs who now have a voice in shaping the future treatment of people with disabilities.

Stringer’s store currently employs seven disabled workers, and she says they love what they do.

“One of my employees has gone to Washington, D.C., to advocate and speak for a group called Y.E.S. [Young Empowered Self-Advocates],” she says.

Many of these employees were working at the location when Stringer took over several years ago, but at that time they were not often given opportunities to take on certain tasks and learn new skills. Now, they can be found successfully running cash registers, delivering food, refilling beverages, preparing food and engaging with guests. “The guests that frequent our location are very happy that we have many great people with disabilities that are not only employed, but have a work environment that treats them as equals,” Stringer says.

Tyler Levy has been with McAllister’s for more than five years. Last year he went to Washington, D.C., to speak at the National Conference on Independent Living. Levy tears up with pride when speaking of Y.E.S., and of going into Jefferson County high schools to talk to students with disabilities. “The kids listen, pay attention and join in,” he says. “It’s amazing.” Levy has spoken publicly in Frankfort and believes disability advocacy is the most important thing he can do.

“A person with a disability - that’s who I am,” he says. “But I don’t let it define me. I just want to make this a better place for persons with disabilities.” Levy prefers not to use the phrase “special needs” when referring to himself and others. “We are just out there trying to make it through,” Levy says. “I prefer ‘a person with a disability.’ Just simple and straight.” Levy says much of what he has learned has come from the opportunities his job provides. “It’s rare to find a boss who really understands you, embraces you and cares - and cares about persons with disabilities, and really just wants the best,” he says. Christina Hopewell, Levy’s job coach from Dreams with Wings, says he has come a long way since he began working.

“I used to be this guy that would stand around and look out the window to see who’s coming,” Levy says. “Now I’m just working and having fun. I couldn’t enjoy it any more and I couldn’t be happier.” Levy’s favorite day at work is Free Tea Day. He enjoys the challenge of the day, mostly because of all the people who come in. “I don’t mean challenge in a hard way - I mean fun,” he says. Levy says he would like to remain at work to become a mentor for other disabled people. He enjoys being an advocate for people with disabilities. Levy even became a chairperson for an advocacy group with the Statewide Council for Vocational Rehabilitation. Levy says working at McAllister’s has improved his social skills and connection to the local community. He has low muscle tone due to Williams Syndrome, and working has helped build the muscles in his

hands through ringing out dish towels and carrying cups of tea. He can now carry one cup in each hand, while he could only carry one cup at a time before he started working. Levy also used to struggle with depth perception. Hopewell and Levy figured out a way to prevent Levy from overfilling drinks by using a line on the store’s cups as a marker. “Without the opportunity to work here, he would not have had the chance to build up the strength in his hands and learn all he has learned,” Hopewell says. Stringer says she loves teaching her disabled employees about what they are expected to do every day, just as she would any other person. “I love to teach them new things, which empowers them to be the great employees they are,” she says. “The thing that most of our employees with disabilities want to have is a fair shot and independence. We give them that.”
