Hannah Ensor Created Nonprofit To Aid Displaced Children in Thailand For nearly four years, Hannah lived and worked with the Karen people in Thailand. During that time she contracted dengue fever, a mosquito-acquired virus endemic to Southeast Asia that results in high fever, severe headache and joint pain. There are four strains of the virus, so while Hannah became immune to the strain she acquired in 2012 when she came down with a different strain 18 months later, the doctor who treated her said she had to return home to the US. According to researchers, someone who is reinfected with dengue fever is likely to develop extreme symptoms. Hannah returned to Shelbyville, Kentucky where her parents live. She reconnected with her high school sweetheart, Chad Ensor, married him and gave birth to their son, Kash. During these years, Hannah remained in contact with friends and colleagues in Thailand.

If you’ve ever listened to the BBC, you’ve likely heard about Rohingya Muslims, an ethnic minority, fleeing Myanmar for Bangladesh. What you may not realize is that they are not the only ethnic group fleeing persecution and civil war in Myanmar. The Karen (pronounced Kah-rin) are another minority people that has primarily fled to Thailand, where many live in refugee camps. For local resident Hannah Ensor, the plight of Karen refugees has become a personal mission. In 2010, Hannah was living in California and decided to travel for a few months. During her adventure, she wound up in Thailand and fell in love with the country. She returned
home and spent the next 10 months saving money and selling everything she owned so that she could purchase a one-way ticket back to Thailand. “My heart never left,” she says. When she returned to Thailand in 2011, she settled in Mae Sot, a city close to the ThaiMyanmar border, and began teaching English to children in a Karen refugee camp. While she had no prior teaching experience, the job required a bachelor’s degree and being a native English speaker. She had those two qualifications plus a desire to help. Although Hannah was the “teacher,” her experience was mostly about being a student: learning about the civil war in Myanmar and why Karen people were fleeing their villages to settle in Thai camps.
Her love of Karen refugees inspired her to create her nonprofit, Baht Babies, in 2017. Hannah works as a real estate agent with Remax Properties and says, “Most everything I make, after I pay my expenses, goes into my nonprofit.” Any money she puts into her 501(c)(3), as well as any tax-deductible contributions from others, is used to purchase school supplies, medical supplies and water filters for refugees. In March 2018, after a five-year absence,

Hannah returned to Southeast Asia where she worked inside Myanmar at an internally displaced person (IDP) camp. She plans to return in October 2018 where she hopes to film a documentary to bring increased awareness to Karen refugees. She maintains a website and Facebook page for Baht Babies where she lists upcoming fundraiser events. It is difficult to imagine what life is like in a refugee camp. Hannah says there are no permanent structures, only makeshift bamboo shelters with leaves for roofs. Refugees basically live day-to-day using rice and charcoal subsidies from international relief agencies to survive. IDP camps are even less functional in part because their food subsidies have been cut off. Residents can’t safely return to their villages due to the military presence and landmines. “Myanmar has the longest civil war in the world, and no one knows about it,” she says. The primitive conditions make water filters a necessity to prevent cholera and other
water-borne diseases. Hannah takes two types of filters with her to give to refugees and their families. Katadyne filters cost $55 and are portable, which is useful for refugees who need to travel, while Sawyer filters are for more stationary purposes. They cost $60
and have a bucket attached. When Hannah visits the camps, she works with a translator and conducts workshops with refugees to teach them how to properly use the filters. She is hoping to help build a school because

the need for education is so dire. Families in Myanmar are often uprooted quickly, without access to transcripts and other documentation. Even if children receive an education in a refugee camp, Hannah says the international community often does not recognize that diploma.
It is difficult for Hannah to put into words how the Karen refugees make her feel.
“I just jumped without looking and figured it out,” she says. “I had tons of questions.” She is currently pursuing a master’s degree “I feel more at home in the middle of a in international relations with a focus on refugee camp than I do in a dining room conflict resolution at American Public here,” she says. Brendan Kelly, owner of Archadeck of Louisville, is a man of many talents. Though he holds a degree in graphic design and fine arts, he was eager to find a way to create what he calls usable art. “I wanted to create a place you can use, but that is also beautiful,” says Kelly, who in 2016 became an owner in the 40-year-old national franchise. Archadeck of Louisville serves all of Louisville and the surrounding communities. When Kelly was looking into starting a franchise, he considered what was important to him, and outdoor living topped the list. This endeavor was the perfect fit for his passion, ambitions and diverse skill set. “I never thought of this work as construction,” he says. “Designing and building decks enabled me to be outdoors and utilize my degree in a unique way.” Though Kelly is relatively new to the business, his crew is skilled and seasoned, having built hundreds of decks throughout the last 15 to 20 years. For Kelly, maintaining the structural integrity of the product is of paramount importance, and it’s what sets him apart from many other outdoor deck and porch builders. Instead of doing the minimum, he and his crew go above and beyond. For example, local building code states that decks are only supposed to meet 40 pounds per square foot, at a minimum. Kelly and his crew try to hit 60, which means they do
one and a half times what is required. This is important because decks that are built incorrectly simply won’t last. “I’ve seen hundreds, if not thousands, of decks that have not been built correctly,” says Kelly, who estimates that 80 to 90% of decks are not built up to modern code. “The biggest faux pas is when you have a column and there’s a beam on top of it, you really should notch the top of the column that’s holding the deck up. A lot of times they are bolted or nailed to the side of the post so the entire deck is basically held up by six bolts. You should notch it so the beams are sitting on top of the post. That way the whole post would have to disintegrate for the deck to fail.” In addition, his carpentry crew is experienced at framing and trim work. “A deck is structural, yet it has to look nice with finishing touches,” Kelly says. Specializing in custom decks, open porches, screened patios, paver patios and sunrooms, they also do pergolas and fire features, which have increased in popularity this year. Prior to owning Archadeck, Kelly was a teacher of religion, having attended seminary and earned a theology degree. He and his wife Leah have three children, Clare (5), Luke (4), and Monica (6 months). He decided to switch gears and try something new, which he admits was a bit nerve wracking, but he’s been pleased with the result. “I’m proud of what we can accomplish as a crew,” Kelly says. “I love this business and the people I work with.” MARCH 2021 / 9

RENAISSANCE WOMAN LOUISVILLE NATIVE DARLENE HUNT LAUNCHES NEW FOX SITCOM SERIES Darlene Hunt

In January a new prime-time series hit the air on the FOX network, one that has a special connection to Louisville. The new series is “Call Me Kat,” starring “The Big Bang Theory” alum Dr. Mayim Bialik, who is known for her roles in the movie “Beaches” and on her own series, “Blossom,” which aired in the 1990s. The new series is based in Louisville and the main character, Kat, is a 39-year-old single woman who owns a cat cafe (in case

The program’s “I thought that sounded so cool and creator, executive producer, showrunner exciting,” she says. “That was a great outlet for and writer, Darlene Hunt, was born in me and I just loved it. She got a part playing a munchkin in a production of “The Wizard of Oz.” “That was such a huge, crazy thrill,” she recalls. When asked if she’d ever performed at the Derby Dinner Playhouse in Clarksville, Indiana, she replies, “I can’t sing and I can’t dance, so musical theater wasn’t an option. If I could sing and dance I wouldn’t have left. I thought theme parks were the be-all and end-all of performing. If I could sing and dance I’d be at Dollywood right now in a show. I would have just lived and died in

She’d been advised by a high school counselor to attend that university, plus she received advice from Moses Goldberg from StageOne to go there as well. “I think Northwestern taught us a lot about paving our own way and creating our own performance experiences,” she says. there were agents there who discovered that Hunt had great talent as a writer, and who wanted her to sign on to work with them. “The creators of ‘Will & Grace’ also came to see the show and they asked me to write an episode for the show,” Hunt says. “That was my first writing assignment.” The episode was titled, “Dyeing is Easy, Comedy is Hard.” Hunt says her writing career turned towards selling television pilot ideas to networks. “It was exciting, but they were never picked up to go to series,” she says. roles she holds producing “Call Me Kat.” It’s been a perfect fit. “I had tried to pitch shows that were set in a more rural area, to sort of honor the rural area where I grew up,” Hunt explains. “I wanted this show to be a little more urban than that, but I didn’t want it to be in New York or L.A. It should feel kind of more normal.” She saw her new series as a chance to honor Kentucky, so she pitched the idea of setting it in Louisville. “I gave Mayim the opportunity to change that if the idea of Louisville didn’t speak to her,” Hunt says. “She’s from San Diego, so I told her we could set it there, but she had just come from visiting Louisville and she was on board with the setting. She was like, ‘Louisville is so cool and so great.’ ”
“It was my first experience selling to a cable network,” she says. Hunt does what she can to incorporate Hunt’s hard work and tenacity through the years definitely prepared her for the multiple Louisville landmarks into her show.
“I’ve never written a show where I’ve referenced the town so many times,” she says. “I’m just doing that instinctively because I love shouting out to Louisville.” If you’re wondering what those shout-outs entail, references have been made to the University of Louisville, the characters being “Cards” fans, Churchill Downs, The Brown Hotel, the Courier-Journal, and bourbon tasting. “I hope people will stick with our show,” Hunt says. “TV is kind of a living, breathing thing and it evolves and moves forward, and I feel like we’re just hitting our stride. I hope people become invested, as we really want to tell this genuine story of a woman of a certain age that may not be totally represented on TV. There’s a lot of heart in the show. It’s a bit of a love letter to Louisville.” Call me Kat airs Thursdays at 9/8 C on Fox.

DIFFERENCE MAKER TARA OLIVER TALKS JOURNEY AT CEDAR LAKE LODGE
Writer / Annette Skaggs Photography Provided
Cedar Lake Lodge has been in the Louisville area for 50 years, providing assistance to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With a workforce of over 450 employees, some having been with the organization for 40-plus years, one can imagine the dedication, drive and empathy that these caregivers have for their clients and patients who come to Cedar Lake Lodge to heal, learn and grow. One such person is Tara Oliver, who serves as director of corporate and foundation relations for this revered organization. Oliver didn’t start at that level - she worked her way up through the ranks beginning as an intern when she attended the University of Louisville. Before her time at U of L, she had been
attending Kentucky Wesleyan College under an academic scholarship in biology, with a focus on becoming a research geneticist. After two years at Wesleyan, Oliver felt this was not the right direction for her career. She came back to Louisville and took some time off from the collegiate world, and resumed her work with Kentuckiana Allergy, where she worked during summers off from Jeffersontown High School and college.
When Oliver went back into the workforce, she was ready to create her own identity, and she worked with organizations like Path Forward, who had similar programs to Cedar Lake Lodge, such as job placement services. While she enjoyed her work there, she felt a calling to make it back to Cedar Lake. Having completed the internship, Oliver was certainly known there among the management, and she expressed interest in working there in the marketing and communications department. It wasn’t long before Cedar Lake asked her to come on board. Starting in the marketing and communications department, Oliver’s talents quickly earned her a rise within the organization, always in a fundraising mode and sometimes serving as the sole person in the department. Her eight years with Cedar Lake have been some of the most rewarding of her professional life.
When asked about how her work has coincided with her brother being a client, Oliver is quick to share that she is able to be successful because of Matthew’s success. Yes, she often uses her brother’s story as part of As life came calling, Oliver met and married her husband of 20 years, Steve, a former dental the dialogue that she presents to potential donors and patients, but it is a dialogue lab salesperson. Through these support options, the Cedar Lake residences were formed. Within these residences, Cedar Lake tenants go about their daily lives just like we all do - they tidy up the house, go to work, play some video games, hang out with friends, and go to dinner. These are the types of achievements that prove to Cedar Lake Lodge and its vast range of clientele and supporters how invaluable their services are.

Like many other parents, there was fear of how their son would develop and navigate adulthood. Fortunately, Cedar Lake Lodge offered the services that would enable Matthew to grow and learn. He lives in an apartment that is part of the Cedar Lake facilities, of which there are 36, including several in the St. Matthews and Jeffersontown area. The housing that has been developed allows freedom and socialization for its residents. Aside from living on his own, Matthew holds jobs at both Rainbow Blossom and Cinemark Theatres.

There was a time that the word “retarded” was used as a blanket term to describe someone with developmental difficulty. “That word is not a part of our vocabulary, and when I hear it in conversation, I do my best to explain to the user of the harm that the word exhibits to its intended subject,” Oliver says. “Our vision is of a community where those with and without disabilities learn to share and enrich each other’s
lives through meaningful interactions that cultivate mutual respect and unconditional love. We live the mantra of unconditional love each and every day that we spend with these marvelous people, and we are the better for it.” While Cedar Lake Lodge has been a big part of Oliver’s life, she has become involved in other activities. She currently serves on the Jeffersontown High School Scholarship Board and is deeply involved in Tully Elementary’s parent-teacher association (PTA). She shares that at Tully, PTA involvement is a very important expectation of parents. Also, Oliver and her family welcomed Lina, a foreign exchange student from outside Frankfurt, Germany. She attended Jeffersontown High School until this past March, when she went back home due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Pawleys Island during the Labor Day week,” she says. “In fact, we are making it an allfamily vacation - husband, kids, mom and dad, and brother. It is important to us that we find time to get away, to reconnect, to renew.” Perhaps it is through Oliver’s dedication and work-life balance that she serves as such an integral part of the Cedar Lake Lodge story. The Louisville area is certainly better for having Cedar Lake Lodge and its devoted supporters and staff.
Oliver also loves the beach and vacationing.
“When given the opportunity to share who and what Cedar Lake Lodge is, I feel pride and some emotion, not only because I get to share of how successful my brother has been, but also because I get to see, firsthand, the success on other’s faces,” Oliver says. “It is not hard to believe and repeat Cedar Lake Lodge’s vision statement, as it truly reflects what we’ve been doing and continue to do, in the present and going forward.”
“My family and I are excited to head to

Owner Prasad Kaza with GM Chris Cunningham
RECIPE FOR SUCCESS Moya’s American Kitchen Prides Itself on Classic Fare

happened and it wiped out my business,” Kaza explains.
The city of Louisville has an extensive range of dining options, ranging from pizza joints to some of the top restaurants in the commonwealth, and even the country. Although we love patronizing our regular hangouts and culinary mainstays, it’s always a tasty treat when restaurateurs take the plunge and open a new establishment.
He had been the owner of a Thrifty Car Rental for eight years, and says that in August of 2001 he’d actually had his best month with rentals. After the attack on the World Trade Center, he had to shut down.
as a Steak and Ale, and then it became an Annabelle’s,” says Moya’s General Manager Chris Cunningham. “But the most known tenant here was Tumbleweed’s. Any time someone asks, ‘Now, where are you located?’ I’ll say, ‘Do you know where Tumbleweed’s used to be in Plainview?’ and they’ll say, ‘Oh yeah!’”
“I had to close that business and find something else to do,” he says.
Putting the restaurant together for its grand opening took a great deal of work.
This past June, after waiting several months for the governor to allow restaurants to reopen, a new place kicked into gear, offering patrons meals that taste as if they were cooked at home by your dear mother. This is Moya’s American Kitchen, and the proud owner is 67-year-old Prasad Kaza who is originally from India.
An opportunity opened up and he was offered a job at Back Yard Burgers on Blankenbaker Road, and he’s currently part owner of that location. This opportunity fit in well with his past work experience, as he’d been part owner of an Arby’s restaurant and owner of a Dairy Queen, so he knew the restaurant industry quite well.
Kaza has quite an interesting story as his path from India to Louisville had a few twists along the way. He’s lived in the midwestern, eastern and southern parts of the country, making his home in places such as Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee and New York. He’s been in Louisville for 15 years, and it was an unfortunate turn of events that actually brought him to this state.
It was about two and a half years ago when Kaza had the idea to open his own fullservice restaurant. He was familiar with the building where Moya’s is now located, and it had been sitting empty for nearly a decade. He also knew the owner of the building, so he contacted him to express interest in purchasing the property.
“We had to redo the inside completely because the restaurant had been vacant for so long,” Kaza explains. “It’s really unique inside. It has a lot of woodwork all over, and there’s a grand staircase that splits into two different directions that leads to the upper floor. We had to re-sand every part of the wood and put on a fresh coat of varnish. The light fixtures have been changed. The kitchen had to be redone, and we had to replace the carpets and tile, and work on the bathrooms.”
“I had been in New York when 9/11
“From people who’ve come in here, we’ve learned that this place opened in the ’70s 20 / MARCH 2021
They also had to repave the parking lot and refurbish the outdoor wooden deck. “We get a lot of compliments about the look of the restaurant from our guests,” Cunningham says.
According to Cunningham, the two-story structure has an inside occupancy limit of 250, with room for 200 on the bottom floor and 50 on top.
and on the huge deck that overlooks a pond filled with ducks and geese. The additional outdoor seating provides room for at least 100 patrons.
“The upper story is shaped like a big square, kind of like an open loft, with a hole in the middle where you can look down on the bar below,” he says.
Although Kaza is from India, he wanted to open a restaurant that appeals to the American palate.
The restaurant also has plenty of seating outdoors, and when weather permits, guests can sit on the front porch, in the parking lot,
this area I didn’t see many places like that. I wanted this to be a simple place with quality food at a reasonable price. That was my baseline before I did this. We did a lot of research. Sysco Foods helped us and we hired a professional chef to finalize our menu.”
The menu is plentiful with lots of locally inspired dishes to choose from. For starters and appetizers, they serve coconut shrimp “There are a lot of Indian restaurants here, with citrus mustard, pickle chips, fried green but the way I looked at it is that I wanted a place with nice southern-style, family-cooked tomatoes, an onion-ring tower, jalapeño hushpuppies, as well as chicken-and-biscuit meals,” he says. “When I looked around in

When you dig into their entrée menu you’ll be tempted to try everything, like the smothered pork chops, catfish dinner, meatloaf stack, loaded mac and cheese, or beef stroganoff. Desserts include housemade chocolate cake and cheesecake, and they will soon have what Kaza calls their ‘crazy shakes,’ which will surely be a delightful treat.
“When I started this project a couple of years ago around Christmas time and my family was together, they started asking me what I was going to call the restaurant,” Kaza says. “I told them I wasn’t sure and that I had several names in mind, but nothing concrete. My daughter-in-law and son asked, ‘Why don’t you name it Moya’s?’ Moya means uncle in the Indian language.” Besides offering a great place to have lunch or dinner, Moya’s has also become a goto destination for great entertainment.

“I remember when Prasad was interviewing me to be his GM, he brought me in to see the progress that had been made on the building, and I kept looking over at the deck, and he asked me what I was looking at,” Cunningham says. “I pointed to the deck and I told him that area is going to be a big draw for his business, and that he needed to bring in live music.” Cunningham believes the restaurant experience is much more than just the food. “It’s the service, it’s the entertainment, and it’s the feel and the ambience,” he says. “So, once I was hired I started to book music acts.” Various local acts have made their home at Moya’s. One regular performer is Emily Lancaster, a singer and guitar player who is only 16 years old. “She’s so mature and handles herself so well,”

HELP ON THE WAY
ELI LILLY RELEASES COVID-19 ANTIBODY TREATMENT
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
After a year that feels like it’s been full of upsets and letdowns, news that Eli Lilly and Company has produced a COVID-19 antibody treatment, for which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted emergency authorization, is a reason to celebrate. The treatment stems from one of the first coronavirus survivors from the Pacific Northwest.
“When your body has a virus that enters it, your immune system recognizes it and creates antibodies that help your body to rid itself of the virus,” says Janelle Sabo, Eli Lilly’s COVID-19 therapeutics platform leader. “We were able to isolate one of those antibodies and scale it up.” When introduced to the human body, this antibody binds to the COVID-19 virus and helps neutralize it, so that it clears from the body. Once Eli Lilly was granted 24 / MARCH 2021
approval by the FDA, the U.S. government bought a supply that was shipped to Eli Lilly’s wholesaler. Every week, the U.S. government and state health departments across the country decide where the therapy should be shipped. Currently the therapy, called bamlanivimab, is at various locations across the U.S. “We know bamlanivimab is in several hospitals in Indiana, and patients have already been dosed with it,” Sabo says.
What this treatment means for high-risk patients is significant. High-risk patients include those who are older, overweight, or have conditions that predispose them to suffer acutely after contracting COVID-19. The antibody is administered as soon as possible following a positive coronavirus test - within 10 days of developing symptoms.
bamlanivimab is not the right treatment for them.
“Our hope is that when this therapy is administered early on, those patients will avoid hospitalization and hopefully will be able to ease their symptomology sooner as well,” Sabo says.
Sabo says the virus has caused a strain on many hospital systems.
If an individual is exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, they should get tested. If they are positive and have symptoms, they may be a candidate for this drug if they are 55 or over, have a body mass index over 35, or have conditions like cardiovascular disease or an impaired immune system. It’s important to note that once patients are ill enough to be hospitalized,
“This is because at that point there are other biological things that are going on that may require a different set of treatments,” Sabo says. “This antibody treatment is targeted for that early-diagnosis, symptomatic, notready-to-go-to-the-hospital population.”
“We are seeing fewer and fewer ICU beds,” Sabo says. “We are also seeing busier and busier ERs. This is true here in Indiana and across the country.” When this treatment is administered in the right time period, it has the ability to help reduce that strain in hospitals and emergency rooms. “The data would suggest this antibody treatment could reduce [the virus] as much

as 70 to 80% in this population,” Sabo says. “This is an opportunity not only to help patients feel better faster, but also to help the health care system to reduce some of the pressure of the hospitalizations and additional ER visits.” Sabo’s biggest piece of advice to the community is to wear masks to reduce the spread. “I know that there is mask fatigue, but until vaccines become widely available and there are additional treatments, we really need to

It’s about protecting those with immune systems that are weakened, or have conditions that make it harder to fight these types of infection.” Sabo notes that “infection” is an interesting term, since many people who test positive for the virus never develop symptoms. “This new antibody treatment is not for them,” she explains. “This is about looking at patients who not only have the virus but now have started to develop symptoms. I think that’s an important distinction because there are a lot of people who have a positive test and no symptoms, and frankly those patients will likely go on to do just fine with very little treatment or intervention.”

In some homes, the kitchen table is now the classroom, and the guest room is a brandnew home office. Whether you are running your own business from home or just trying to stay focused on your job, working from home can have all sorts of challenges. This includes having your kids at home doing homework and studying as they do remote learning. While many of us grew up doing homework around the kitchen table, in today’s world of video meetings and online classes, that scenario is not always practical. There is more variety in work-from-home options than ever before. That was clearly evident at the Fall Home Furnishings

That will give additional lighting for video calls on those gray days or after sunset. If there are two adults working at home, separate rooms may be difficult. Separate workstations in the same room are doable if there is some division. Not so at home. There are so many options for office desks that, with some help from a professional, you can find one that will satisfy your work needs, and fit your space, design preference and lifestyle. You can adjust height, be stylish and trendy, and even make a statement. Similarly, chair options are plentiful. Ergonomic chairs often have backrests that can be raised and lowered, as well as moved forward and backward to eliminate bending or stretching. Firm lumbar support may be an issue if you are sitting for long stretches. If you are sitting for long hours in a chair, it’s worth it to make the added investment in quality seating. Storage solutions are another common issue. If space is at a premium, you may need a desk with its own storage. However, if you do have the space, there are fabulous options for furnishings that will do the job. There is no “typical” home office style. It’s all your choice. WHY WE CHOKE
WHAT THE SCIENCE SAYS ABOUT CHOKING UNDER PRESSURE Writer / Dr. Dave Schroerlucke Photography Provided
Most of us are familiar with the experience of choking under pressure - that is, giving a subpar performance in a one-shot-only scenario such as an important competition, examination or job interview. Choking on a big stage is a dreadful experience that every athlete or performer hopes to avoid. Of course, understanding why choking occurs is a critical first step toward prevention.
published a comprehensive review in 1986 of the prior research on what they called “paradoxical performance effects” - that is, performing poorly when there are incentives to perform well. Despite more than three decades of empirical research, both in the lab and on the field, social and psychological scientists have yet to produce a consensus theory of choking.
Instead, three competing theoretical models have emerged - the skillfocus model, the distraction model and the self-presentation model. The scientific study of the choking phenomenon really began in This article provides a broad overview and comparison of these earnest in the late 1980s, after Roy Baumeister and Carolin Showers attempts at providing a scientific explanation of why people choke. 30 / MARCH 2021
ATTENTIONAL MODELS OF CHOKING SKILL-FOCUS MODEL
DISTRACTION MODEL
Advocates of the skill-focus model have adopted Roy Baumeister’s original idea that choking occurs when performance anxiety causes athletes to become self-conscious and pay too much attention to the conscious processing of skill execution. Such explicit monitoring or reinvestment of attention is thought to have a negative effect on well-learned skills that are typically processed outside of conscious awareness in the form of implicit, procedural memory (i.e. on autopilot). Put simply, the skill-focus model suggests that choking amounts to overthinking something that by now should be second-nature. Cognitive scientist Sian Beilock and her colleagues have referred to this phenomenon as “paralysis by analysis.” The remedy, then, is to get out of your head and let your unconscious memory take over.
Alternatively, proponents of the distraction model propose that choking occurs because heightened arousal causes athletes and performers to shift their attention away from task execution rather than toward it. Attending to external, task-irrelevant information (crowd, trophy, prize money) is thought to overwhelm the athlete’s limited working memory capacity, resulting in less efficient processing of taskrelevant cues and a higher frequency of performance errors. Put simply, the distraction model suggests that choking amounts to a breakdown in concentration. The remedy then, in stark contrast to what the skill-focus model would suggest, is to bear down and focus on the task at hand.

Although presented in the literature as opposing explanations (too much attention to skill execution versus not enough), the skill-focus and distraction models share the central assumption that choking is due to a misappropriation of attentional resources as a result of increased arousal and anxiety. For this reason, they are often classified together as attentional models of choking.
SELF-PRESENTATION MODEL More recently, Dr. Chris Mesagno proposed a third perspective that seeks to synthesize the two competing attentional models into a higher-level, integrated theory. His self-presentation model of choking highlights the social nature of modern sport performance and suggests that competitive anxiety is a form of social anxiety in which the athlete seeks to convey a positive self-image to others through performance outcome.

Because the self-presentation model is the newest kid on the theoretical block, there are fewer empirical studies investigating the link between self-presentation concerns, competitive anxiety and choking. However, qualitative studies involving anecdotal descriptions of choking experiences from professional and worldclass amateur performers offer compelling support for the idea that choking is related to heightened self-consciousness and fear of negative evaluation in a social setting.
Who has it right, then? Do we choke because we focus too much attention on skill execution or not enough? Given that similar research results have at times been interpreted as offering support According to the self-presentation model, choking occurs when for each of these two diametrically opposed explanations, this an athlete or performer becomes acutely aware of the potential theoretical stalemate is not likely to be resolved any time soon. negative implications of a poor performance for their social identity, Is this even the correct question to be asking? the central concern, but rather what are the internal experiences that produce shifts in attention when the pressure is on. Rather than seeking to compete with or replace the attentional models, Mesagno has speculated that the self-presentation, skillfocus and distraction models can be combined into a single, integrated theory of choking in which competitive anxiety originates in self-presentation concerns and subsequently leads to skill-focus and distraction as different coping strategies. Thus, for Mesagno and colleagues, self-presentation concerns and fear of negative evaluation are the “why” of choking, while skill-focus and distraction are the “how.” Making this distinction between the “how” and the “why” holds promise in serving as a basis for the development of interventions aimed at addressing both the ultimate and proximal causes of choking.

particular individual. In the end, choking under pressure turns out to be a complex phenomenon - a subjective human experience that does not lend itself to one-size-fits-all explanations or remedies. All scientists can do at this point is offer a range of explanations and strategies whose validity must then be checked against your own personal experience. If an explanation resonates with you or a strategy “just works,” that’s ultimately what matters. In the end, we all just want to find a way to choke less frequently. One thing is certain. The universality of the choking phenomenon, along with our collective fear of its devastating effects, ensures that the causes of choking will continue to be the subject of intense scientific research. In time, as with all areas of scientific inquiry, the fog of confusion will slowly clear and give way to a more coherent theory of choking that can serve as the basis for more effective interventions. With you in the pursuit, Dr. Dave

PAWS-ABILITY
ST. MATTHEWS-BASED NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION HELPS TO PLACE SERVICE DOGS Writer / Annette Skaggs Photography Provided
If you are like many people, you like dogs. Perhaps you even love them. They are oftentimes playful souls who beg for food and belly rubs, and provide a great ear for when you are having a bad day. Dogs make marvelous pets, to be sure. Luckily, one day a smart human noticed how brilliant a dog’s mind could be and that many of them have an innate ability to be helpers of some sort. For example, shepherds are so named because they assist in herding animals. Using dogs’ instincts, training began in order to teach these noble and adorable animals how to assist humans in their everyday lives, outside of being beloved pets. Since the development of this manner of training, the services provided by these animals have changed the lives of millions of people (and the dogs themselves). Many of us are familiar with the ubiquitous seeingeye dog, perhaps one of the most common of them all, but there are a multitude of other maladies and ailments that canines
help with every day, from guidance to the ability to sniff out cancer. Trainers and scientists are still learning and unlocking new abilities of canines and other animals. With industry leaders such as the International Guide Dog Federation, Dogs for the Deaf and Paws for a Cause, there is no lack of resources to attain one of these magnificently trained furballs. Numerous studies have found that veterans and first responders have benefitted greatly through attaining their respective animals, but what if money is a little tight and you find yourself needing the assistance of a good service dog? Insurance doesn’t cover guide or assistance dogs, and acquiring a dog of this kind can cost upwards of $40,000. Not many families have that kind of money to put towards getting a support animal. Enter Paws-Ability, Inc., a fairly new organization to the Louisville area that specializes in getting support dogs to our veterans, correctional officers and first responders, with minimal or even no money out of their pockets. The organization sprang from the minds of
co-founders Jim Day and John Wells. Day, a Vietnam Army veteran who often has his dog Samson by his side, had been working with another organization that provides service dogs, but he felt that he could build a better program and one that, hopefully, would reach more people and dogs. “Having Samson has allowed me to regain much of my lost freedoms,” Day says. “A service dog does not solve everything, but it does make life so much better.” It is that kind of impact that this organization seeks to achieve every day. You may be asking, how did John Wells get involved, and become the face and prime contact for the organization? One could say that it was kismet or luck. More on that to come. Let’s learn a little bit about Wells beforehand. Wells grew up in St. Matthews, attending Waggener High School. Coming from a family heavily steeped in military service, including his father who served as a colonel in the Army for 34 years including reserves, Wells entered the Navy and served as a

Unfortunately, due to the viral outbreak I don’t get to bring Cash around like I used to.” Despite not being able to roam the halls of the hospital like in the past, Wells and Cash stay busy building Paws-Ability’s brand. “As the organization grows, so does Cash’s celebrity,” Wells says. “He’s known as far away as Laynesville.” Like other dog assistance programs out there, Paws-Ability follows Americans with Disabilities Act regulations, which includes
150 hours of training time with a canine and a certificate of accomplishment. Luckily there have been some collaborations with other programs that help aid the training of the dogs and their human counterparts. In this area, the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex has a successful dog training program, and Cash is a shining graduate, but Paws-Ability utilizes the ADOPT (A Dog on Prison Turf) program at the women’s prison in Madison, Indiana. are one or one and a half years old. As one can imagine, the cost of the canine and its training can get rather expensive. Wells shares that the range of cost can be anywhere from $3,500 to $70,000 per dog. If that doesn’t make your jaw drop, consider the fact that insurance does not cover service animals.
While the raising of such funds is daunting enough, the demand for the animals is great and the application process can be arduous. Currently Paws-Ability has eight in their queue. Aside from the paper application that goes through the board, as well as an interview committee, there is a required home inspection.
