Ben Palmer-Ball’s father worked his whole life at the family business, Palmer Products on St. Matthews Avenue. While Palmer-Ball loved growing up in the area, he moved to California to pursue a career in architecture. After living there for 18 years, he returned home in 1999 after his father passed away, to help his mother. Soon after, he began looking around for retail space in order to open a home and garden center. When his realtor came across a space that was familiar to him, he was transported back in time. Years before, he had grown cucumbers on the family farm, which he sold to Paramount Foods.

“I knew it was meant to be Digs Home and Garden,” he says. “It was kismet, coming back to my roots.” To a certain degree, it was a natural career transition as he had always loved gardening. “I love getting my hands dirty,” Palmer-Ball says. “My parents were big gardeners, so growing up I was an indentured servant. Dad got me out on the tiller, and I guess that took because it became a passion for me.” After residing in California for nearly two decades, he had developed an affinity for year-round outdoor living.

He recognized that his vision wasn’t as viable in the Midwest as in other places, but he found ways to extend seasons through outdoor rooms, fireplaces, fire pits and heaters. Palmer-Ball, inspired by a garden lifestyle company called Smith & Hawken, became a dealer for the company. This has increased his stock of furniture and outdoor living products. He also began carrying a wide selection of pots and planters, benches, dining furniture, and umbrellas. Digs is now celebrating 20 years in business, and Palmer-Ball is proud of all the storms the store has weathered. “We’ve survived the September 11 terror attacks, the economic downturn of 2008, and this global pandemic,” he says. “I think that’s a testament for a little homegrown retail outfit.” He had just switched out fresh inventory and was gearing up for the Derby last year when many businesses shut down. His store remained closed for three months, but because he does business with so many

designers and some of them continued to work with clients, they came into Digs to make selections. “Our designer base helped get us through the months when our doors were closed,” he says. Palmer-Ball sets up his furniture displays in ways that make it easy for consumers to buy items here and there, spending years mixing and matching if they so choose. “Not everyone can afford to have an instant setting for furniture where they buy everything all at once,” he says. “We try to carry a variety of different vendors and collections, and I pick products that can work together over time.” According to Palmer-Ball, Digs thrives on what he calls “the eclectic view.” “When you’ve got quality pieces that will last a long time, you can add to them year

after year,” he says. Customers return to Digs time and again because they not only carry affordable products, but those products are also focused on the heartbeat of Louisville. “They’re not the same things you’ll find in other parts of the U.S.,” Palmer-Ball says. When he lived out west, many customers were concerned about cutting-edge trends and styles, but when Palmer-Ball is at market making choices, he considers what works best for his community.

“You can always add pops of color or texture with pillows, accent rugs, or even pots and plants,” he says. Because he was born and raised in the area, he cares a great deal about giving back to the St. Matthews community. “We have such a loyal customer base, so when they give us opportunities to help them, I’m delighted to do so,” says PalmerBall, who regularly participates in school and neighborhood fundraisers. “We try to find ways to help people who might not have a big cause that would garner big dollars and sponsors.”

“We carry different brands because there are He’s supportive of Little League teams, different strengths to each brand,” he says. refurbished barn that sits on the property. “I made it into an apartment,” he says. “My plan was to move my mom in there, but she was having no part of it because she remembers it being a barn with tractors, possums, raccoons and birds.” He’s happily moved into the renovated barn himself. “The arts community was hit hard,” he says. “We looked for ways to help out folks so we can get through this together.” Palmer-Ball has always felt strongly that Louisville needed an arboretum or some sort of outdoor space, which is why he feels a kinship with Yew Dell Botanical Gardens, a 33-acre public botanical garden and horticulture research center. “They’ve been so successful in building a great organization to support the grounds out there,” he says. “Because of my outdoor

affinity, I’ve always loved that there’s that opportunity for folks here in Louisville to get that consciousness in the community about plants and landscape on everyone’s radar.” Mostly, he is thrilled that he and his sales team have become friends with so many customers, some of whom visit weekly. “Digs has that ‘Cheers’ bar feeling to it, where everybody knows one another,” says Palmer-Ball, who grew up on a farm on Westport Road and has come full circle - he’s living back on the family farm, in a

Mason Carpenter was just 10 years old when he began mowing yards in his Kentucky neighborhood. Fast-forward 17 years, and he’s still taking care of a handful of those yards, along with many others including commercial and industrial properties. “I was encouraged to go to college so I did for a short time, but ultimately decided to explore what else was out there for me,” Carpenter says. After studying basic courses he worked briefly as a firefighter and an emergency medical technician, but what he liked most about firefighting was the fact that the schedule enabled him to take care of yards on the side. In 2015 he decided to take the plunge and devote himself full-time to his mowing business when he launched Mow Better Lawnscapes. Taking that leap of faith didn’t worry him - in fact, it inspired him. “There’s no ceiling,” Carpenter says. “I like

“I got into this business because I liked making yards look pretty,” says Carpenter, who prides himself on putting a clean, crisp edge on every lawn, and also instructing his crew not to blow grass into landscapes or leave any marks in yards with equipment. Any time he picks up a new client, the first thing he does is ask what dissatisfied them about their last mowing company. “I want to know what they are looking for in a lawn care service so that we can tweak what we do to make them happy,” Carpenter says. “For instance, some people are very particular about wanting stripes in their yard to go a certain direction. Whatever they want - if they want their yard cut in a diamond cut, vertical or horizontal - we make sure to deliver.” Mow Better, which takes care of both residential and commercial properties, also provides leaf removal, shrub trimming, mulch, full lawn cleanup, dirt, sod, hardscaping, retaining walls, drainage, and MAY 2021 / 9

snow and ice management. Over time, the business has grown substantially. Initially a one-man operation, Carpenter now employs three full-time crews (two for mowing and one for landscaping). During the summer, he usually has 15 employees on staff. What started out as just mowing has turned into a full-service lawn and landscaping company for every season. For those who struggle to envision an end product, Carpenter has software on his iPad that enables him to show clients complete landscaping makeovers. “If you’re unsure about what kind of plants you want to go with, for example, I can use photos of your home or business and insert different plants, shrubs and trees, to give you a vision of exactly how the finished product would look,” says Carpenter, who is proud of how far he’s come and excited about where he’s going. “I remember as a kid seeing big companies with trucks and trailers, thinking, ‘Maybe one day I’ll be there,’ ” he adds. “Now I’ve got five of them. A long time ago, in the year 1977 to be exact, a new movie hit theaters and changed the way we think about films and filmmaking. This was the year audiences were introduced to the creativity and imagination of filmmaker George Lucas, and the first installment of his space opera, “Star Wars.” The film became a worldwide pop-culture phenomenon, and through the past four decades it’s grown into a huge franchise that has expanded into various films and other media, including books, toys, clothing, games, theme park attractions and more. The initial “Star Wars” film, as well as its sequels, prequels and other incarnations,

became so popular that 20 years after the first film’s debut, two fans from South Carolina, Albin Johnson and Tom Crews, began an international fan-based organization. It was organized for the construction and wearing of accurate replicas of the armor and clothing worn by Imperial stormtroopers, Sith lords, Clone troopers, bounty hunters and other villains from the “Star Wars” universe. They named it the 501st Legion, also known as Vader’s Fist. According to Kenzo Barlow, public relations officer for the Bluegrass Garrison, their motto is “Bad guys doing good.” The organization is made up entirely of volunteers, and there are currently 13,000 active members worldwide, on six continents and more than 60 countries. Members can be found right here in 10 / MAY 2021

Kentucky - more specifically, right here in Louisville and its surrounding cities. Their mission is to work with nonprofit and charitable organizations to raise money. No members are paid for their work. The entire Legion is broken down into manageable sections called Garrisons. The largest Garrison is in Germany, with nearly 1,000 members. In the United States, Garrisons are divided based largely on state boundaries or regional divisions. For example, Kentucky was, until recently, part of the Mid-South Garrison along with neighboring Tennessee. As membership increased, it became necessary for Kentucky and Tennessee to separate, allowing for more localized leadership. The Bluegrass Garrison is what you will find in Kentucky, with a few members who live in southern

Indiana. Others who participate in central Indiana are members of that state’s Bloodfin Garrison. According to Barlow, there are 87 members spread throughout Kentucky. Next, Garrisons are broken down into squads, which allow for localized management of events. According to John Hoagland, squad leader for the Derby City Squad, Kentucky has three squads located in the more populated areas of the state. “These include Lexington, northern Kentucky, and of course Louisville,” Hoagland explains. “Events that occur outside of those areas are managed by individuals who reside in those areas, with direction from the Garrison or squad level. An example would be if there’s a convention in Bowling Green, then the Derby City Squad would manage it, but an event in Paducah might be handled by members who live in the region, or we might ask for the assistance of another Garrison close to the event site.”

Garrison size can vary from state to state. According to Hoagland, the Bluegrass Garrison currently has about 90 members, with the Derby City Squad at 45 approved members. Hoagland has been a member of the Legion since May of 2016, after many years of watching from the sidelines.

“My first exposure to the Legion, and into costuming in general, was in April 2005 at ‘Star Wars Celebration 3’ in Indianapolis,” he explains. He says he grew up a “‘Star Wars’ kid” and got every action figure his parents would let him have.

approved costume, a stormtrooper from “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope,” but has a few other costumes in the works, including a biker scout from “Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi.” Although wearing his costume is a great deal of fun, Hoagland says he gets much more than just a good time out of the Legion.

“When we rode our bikes around the neighborhood, we’d pretend they were X-wing starfighters,” Hoagland says. “When I went to my first convention and I met guys who were wearing screen-accurate stormtrooper costumes, I thought, ‘Man, I really want to get into that.’ ” Hoagland says the requirements to become a member are fairly straightforward,

although somewhat challenging. “You must own a screen-accurate costume, and one that meets the standards set by the club, which can be found in our database,” he says. “Active membership requires that you do what’s called troop - participate in an event - at least one time per year, although I find that most people troop far more frequently.” Hoagland says he currently has a single

“They can send a message and say, ‘We’re holding a STEM event,’ or, ‘We’re raising money for a certain cause,’” he says. “As long as it’s for a good cause, we’ll take it into consideration.” Barlow adds that the 501st doesn’t do paid events like birthdays or private parties. In 2017 and 2019, members were gracious enough to attend the Eastern High School Band Holiday Boutique, which raises more than $5,000 each year to support the band. Members have also participated in events like the Autism Society of the Bluegrass annual walk, and visits to Norton Children’s Hospital.

Georgio Dimitrov’s upbringing in Louisville and strategic mentoring from family members have led him to take on an exciting adventure as a football player overseas. His passion for football - known as soccer in the United States, of course - stems from his upbringing. Dimitrov has already begun to make his mark. He follows in the footsteps of his mother, father and maternal grandfather - all are well-known for their athletic achievements throughout their lifetime. His mother, Ludmila Dimitrov, is a former professional ice figure skater and champion from Moscow, Russia. His father served as inspiration for Dimitrov, as he also played soccer while growing up. His maternal grandfather was a coach for the sport as well. These close ties set him up for success as he began to enter into athletic competitions at a young age. “I moved to Barcelona, Spain, at around 12 years of age,” Dimitrov says. “I played and spent most of my teen years there, from ages 13 to 18.” He holds Bulgarian citizenship, and is able to live in Barcelona while pursuing his passion. “I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and lived there through my childhood,” he says. “I experienced most of my life there, so it always feels special to come back, which I do regularly.”

I often drive around Louisville and find myself wondering what happens in the various businesses I pass, especially if it’s a business whose work isn’t obvious or well-known in the community. Most Louisvillians have heard of UPS, Humana and YUM!, but there are thousands of businesses whose work stretches far beyond the borders of our state. One such business is Appriss Inc., a data technology and analytics company headquartered in Jeffersontown that is focused on finding solutions to society’s problems. President and CEO Krish Sastry has been with the company for eight years in various roles, and was drawn to the company in large part due to its mission.

“We all like to have an exalted sense of what we do, how it matters and how it changes the world, but quite literally what Appriss does saves lives,” he says. While he formally took on the role of CEO in late summer of 2020, he worked closely with founder and former CEO Mike Davis to ensure his succession would not only be accepted, but also welcomed by the company’s worldwide staff. Davis founded the company in 1994 with Yung Nguyen when they created Victim Information and Notification Everyday (VINE), a notification network inspired by the murder of Mary Byron, a young woman who was killed by her former boyfriend after he was released from prison unbeknownst to her. While VINE began small, it has grown over the years to include 43 states, Washington, D.C., and Guam. Any person can 22 / MAY 2021

sign up for automatic notifications to find out an incarcerated person’s custody status, such as whether he or she has been transferred to another facility or released on bail. The company’s growing connections with law enforcement entities via VINE eventually helped it move into other avenues of public protection. In 2006 Appriss developed NPLEx, a technology that tracks purchases of cold medicines that include pseudoephedrine, to ensure people don’t purchase it in quantities sufficient to create (and potentially sell) methamphetamines. If you’ve ever tried to purchase Claritin-D at your local pharmacy and been asked for your driver’s license, you’ve probably experienced NPLEx even if you didn’t realize it. It didn’t take Appriss too long to recognize that while meth is a big problem, opioids are an even bigger one, affecting too many families in Kentucky and across the nation. Appriss developed state-of-the-art technology known as prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs), used to monitor opioid dispensations in 43 states and territories.

“PDMPs are used for multiple purposes,” Sastry says. “They help doctors and pharmacists identify potential issues of abuse, addiction or diversion, and make better decisions as they serve patients. They also help state agencies identify potential bad actors that may be running pill mills.” Appriss has gone on to develop tools and technology to assist doctors in analyzing patient risks, and help refer patients to appropriate venues for treatment around mental and behavioral health conditions that may be at the root of addiction and drug abuse. The movement from victim notification to prescription drug monitoring was largely organic, and grew from the connections Appriss had originally made with law enforcement agencies and pharmacies. Those same connections helped the company branch further into a broader array of solutions to improve workplace and community safety, and develop data

At first reference, some might cringe when they hear the phrase “going green.” It can carry the stigma of being not only expensive but time-consuming as well. However, being environmentally friendly doesn’t have to break the bank and it won’t take you forever and a day to make a few lifestyle changes. Even though there may be some restrictions still in place, there’s no reason not to spoil mom this year. Here are a few options that are sure to inspire your Mother’s Day plans for this year.

BREAKFAST IN BED While this one might be overdone, it’s still special. I mean, how often is your mom not the first one up in the house? Give her some extra sleep time, and surprise her in bed with her favorite cup of coffee, a delicious breakfast, and a magazine or paper she loves. Then leave her alone to enjoy some peace and quiet. Unless she invites you in - in which case snuggle up, but don’t spill on the bed.

Local nonprofit provides Resources to Single Parents in Need Day felt that God had placed single mothers on her heart. Her first step was to send letters to 50 people asking them to join her in this challenge by matching her $100. She received $15,000 in response. With that money, Day rented her first space and began serving single mothers through a clothes closet.

SPARC (Single Parent Resource Center) Hope has changed considerably since its founding as Mom’s Closet Resource Center (MCRC) in 2003. What began as a simple clothes closet to help single mothers dress for job interviews has grown into an organization focused on helping single parents - both mothers and fathers - seek a better quality of life through higher education.

Not long after MCRC opened, Day added a food pantry to the clothes closet - but according to current Executive Director Laura Wingfield, Day “began to feel like she was giving a handout instead of a hand up.”

It all started when MCRC Founder Sheila Day responded to a challenge she received from her pastor: Take $100 and change the world.

It was then that Day came up with the program that changed the very heart of the organization.

With the creation of the Life Plan program in 2005, MCRC shifted its focus from handing out clothes and food to providing “support, encouragement and guidance to single parents in the pursuit of identifying life choice options that will enhance their opportunities for career advancement and independence,” according to the SPARC Hope website. In addition to receiving personal, professional and educational support, Life Plan program participants may also receive help with rent, utilities, water and other needs. They have full access to the food pantry, as well as clothing through the organization’s consignment shop

partnerships, household items, discounted car repair and more. “The goal of our Life Plan program is to walk with these clients throughout their schooling,” says Staci Harrub, program coordinator. “Once they graduate, we walk with them for six more months as they prepare resumes and interview for jobs. Our goal is for them to be self-sufficient at the end of it.” The Life Plan program is reserved for single parents who have at least 50% custody of their children, work at least 20 hours per week, attend a college, university, trade school or institution of higher education (IHE) accredited by the state of Kentucky or Indiana at least part time with a minimum grade point average of 2.0, and are not cohabitating in a partnered relationship (e.g., living together but not married). SPARC Hope serves anywhere from 13

to 17 Life Plan program participants at any given time, though they are looking to double their program capacity. Interested individuals can apply on the SPARC Hope website at sparc-hope.org/need-assistance. Single parents who don’t qualify for the Life Plan program may access the food pantry once per quarter for one year. Harrub works with these single parents to help them become eligible to apply for the Life Plan program, and she connects them with other resources in the community that best fit their current circumstances. “I will direct them and resource them out where they can get the things that they need, as well as give them access to visit our pantry every three months for a 12-month period,” Harrub says. This includes working with parents who want to go to school, but who aren’t currently enrolled in a college, university, trade school or other IHE.

“We’re trying to help bridge that gap,” Harrub says. Local partnerships are crucial to SPARC Hope’s work. They partner with Dare to Care Food Bank to help stock their food pantry, and they partner with several area consignment stores to help provide clients with clothing and household items. SPARC Hope is also connected with a number of local colleges and universities, and they work closely with Family Scholar House, another nonprofit organization here in Louisville dedicated to helping single parents meet their educational, career and family goals. “We refer to Family Scholar House, and they refer to us,” Harrub says. SPARC Hope is currently working with Metro United Way to become part of their United Communities initiative, which their website describes as “a community-wide

initiative to deploy an innovative shared technology platform to initiate and close referrals across many organizations.” Learn more at metrounitedway.org/program/ united-community. Harrub is hopeful that this connection will make it easier for more single parents to find SPARC Hope. She also hopes it will help her more quickly and easily refer single parents to other resources when necessary. One other exciting partnership is SPARC Hope’s emerging collaboration with the Kentucky Career Center to provide career coaching to clients. This service is yet another way SPARC Hope will be able to help single parents achieve self-sufficiency. Given the many changes that have occurred since MCRC was founded in 2003, the organization’s leaders decided to change their name and undergo a rebranding process in 2019. They feel the name SPARC Hope better describes who they serve (both

single mothers and single fathers) and why - to spark hope in the lives of single parents and their families. SPARC Hope relies heavily on volunteers and funders to make all of this good work possible. Funding comes through a combination of grants, private donations and events. With most events on hold during the current pandemic, Development Coordinator Kara Sanders is focused on building the organization’s growing network of monthly sustaining donors. “Monthly supporters are the key to our sustainability,” she says. “Their consistent support gives us the ability to plan and grow.” A monthly gift of $25 is enough to enable SPARC Hope to provide supplemental groceries to a family for an entire month, while a $250 monthly donation can provide financial support for a family for an entire year. While monetary gifts are the strongest way to support SPARC Hope’s work, in-kind donations are also welcome. SPARC Hope organizes three major food drives per year, but they accept in-kind donations yearround. A list of needed items is maintained on their website.

SPARC Hope has evolved into an organization focused on giving single parents a hand up, not a handout. Their program alumni include single parents who have graduated from college and gone on to become teachers and lawyers - single parents whose children’s lives have been transformed just as much as, if not more than, their parent’s lives. For SPARC Hope, that’s what it’s all about. As their tagline says, they’re “changing the future of Kentuckiana’s kids, one single parent at a time.”

Volunteers form the backbone of the organization. “We live off volunteers,” Sanders says. “We can’t do this without them.” The biggest need that volunteers meet is organizing and running the food pantry, but there are a number of ways they can serve. Volunteers are needed to assist in the office, help plan and put on events, conduct community engagement, research resources and opportunities, and more.
