The Horsehead Nebula
Owner Jared Matthews brings a unique menu and plenty of entertainment at The Fox Den.
RIGHT ON CUE Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
Twenty-five years ago, Jared Matthews was hired as a bartender at Diamond Pub and Billiards. Soon thereafter, he was promoted to manager and began booking the bands, ordering the liquor and taking charge of the overall operations. About five years ago he branched out and began opening up restaurants in the area, including Lou Lou Food and Drink, Black Rabbit, and Equus and Jack’s Bourbon Restaurant and Lounge. Even while tackling all of these ventures (some in the midst of a global pandemic, no less), Matthews stayed on at Diamond to book the bands because music is a huge passion of his. Last fall, however, he had to remove himself completely to concentrate on his restaurant ventures. “It was bittersweet leaving Diamond because I’d spent so many years there,” Matthews says. “The saddest part was walking away from the music.” Six weeks after Matthews left, he got news that Diamond would be closing. The landlord,
a friend of his, told him that he should think about buying the establishment. Matthews didn’t have to think hard. “I jumped right on it,” says Matthews, who was eager to give the place a facelift with a paint and polish, and a slight rebranding. The moment Diamond closed, Matthews announced to the public that he had purchased the place and would be reopening it as the Fox Den after some refurbishment work was done.
THE FOX DEN OPENS WITH BILLIARDS, BITES, BREWS AND MORE the exterior, repaved the parking lot, redid the deck and completely renovated the interior. That included installing brand-new flooring, eliminating the dropped ceiling, removing the wiring that had been hanging for the past 15 years, and putting in pendant lights. In addition, they re-felted the pool tables, revamped the menu and elevated the cocktail list. The grand opening was held on April 22. “To be honest, we were still hanging things on the wall as people were coming through the doors at 3 p.m. for the grand opening, but it was a huge success,” Matthews says. “We had the best night we’ve had in that building. We had two stages going, inside and outside. The community response has been amazing.”
“Diamond’s had been a huge part of people’s lives for so long with tons of regulars so I knew they’d freak out about it closing,” Matthews says. “I wanted them to know that it would be reopening with the same concept, only new and improved.” This includes chef-driven, pub- Many people had presumed Matthews was the owner of Diamond Pub and Billiards. style bites, craft beer and cocktails, live music seven days per week, 11 billiard tables, pinball, “I’d been there for so long and people affiliated and darts. me with that place so they assumed I owned He reached out to a buddy who is a contractor it,” Matthews says. “That wasn’t the case, but I’m happy I do now because there are no and told him, “Boy, do I have a project for strings attached. I can do whatever I want you!” with it.” That was no lie. In six weeks they repainted 6 / ST. MATTHEWS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com
The public is thrilled to hear it. Located in the heart of St. Matthews, the Fox Den seats about 400 (inside and outside) and has live music of all genres, from covers to original tunes. Bands include Radiotronic, Soul Circus, Kevin Cummings & Lauren Eid, Elephant Room, Matt Moore, Some Kind of Saint, and more. “For the most part, bands play from 9 to 1 or 10 to 2, but we’ll be dabbling in happy-hour gigs,” Matthews says. Some are national acts out of Nashville. One of Matthews’ bartenders has a band called Devil’s Cut (named after the bourbon). They are an original rock band that’s going to play one of Danny Wimmer’s Rock on the Range concerts, so Matthews booked them to play at the Fox Den to kick off their big tour.
The reason Matthews branched off into the restaurant business is because he wanted to fully explore his other passion of cooking and creating craft cocktails. A signature dish of his is sous vide pork belly tacos. The breakfast burger (including a custom-blend burger, toasted brioche bun, cheddar cheese, sous vide pork belly, apricot jam and fried over-easy egg) is also fantastic. Other popular menu
“It’s fun highlighting original music,” Matthews says.

Matthews developed a love for Cajun food because he was born in Louisiana. “My parents taught me the cuisine,” he says. “I did a lot of crawfish boils for the neighborhood, which was cool.” He later moved to Alabama where he lived until fifth grade, before the family relocated to Louisville. Now he and his wife Rebecca have four children, Ian, 17, Tristan, 15, Lexi, 6, and Foxy, 3. The sports bar’s name was born out of the family name. Matthews’ middle name is Fox, as is his uncle’s. Matthews named his youngest son Jared Fox Jr., but everyone calls him Fox or Foxy for short.
he supports Love City, Inc., whose mission is to empower a movement of loving people as they are, Wayside Christian Mission, who tackles the root causes of homelessness using a holistic approach, and Apron Inc., which provides temporary financial relief to professional food and beverage workers in Louisville who are experiencing financial distress due to illness, accident or emergency. “Everything I do, I want to be a platform to help others in the community,” Matthews says. In his free time, Matthews likes to play sports, snowboard, go to concerts, work out and spend time with his family. He also owns a gym and practices mixed martial arts and jiujitsu.

Every day I get the opportunity to serve people great entertainment. That makes them happy, which makes me happy. The lifestyle is returning today in the form of multigenerational homes, also known as multi-gen or next-gen homes. Do an internet search on those terms and you will find a wealth of ideas related to the concept. With many 25- to 35-year-olds staying in their parents’ homes, and increasing numbers of boomers over 65, this leaves 40- to 60-year-olds providing for multiple generations under one roof. It is estimated that 64 million Americans live in multigenerational homes for reasons of practicality, affordability and quality time with family.

member and respecting everyone’s needs and preferences for multigenerational living will guarantee harmony in your new home. Another step is to consult with a knowledgeable interior designer when you are still discussing layouts. The interior design community has developed special expertise for those seeking accommodations for aging in place. There are a multitude of design factors to be considered - sizes of doorways, bathroom accessibility, height of outlets, windows and shelving, the use of motorization on window treatments or seating, and more.
While some may wonder about privacy or separate entrances, there are many floor plans that provide a wide range of choices. Some are as simple as including a suite for parents. More elaborate plans are multilevel, or even include two houses on one lot.
Whether you are planning new construction or adapting a current structure, doing ample research and working with a knowledgeable design professional can increase confidence. You’ll want your new spaces to be longlasting, functional for changing lifestyles and ages, and so enjoyable that your home is a constant reminder of the good choices you made.
A good way to start the planning is to gather everyone around a table or on a Zoom call and talk about what’s most important for your family. Listening to every family

One of a Kind JILL WRIGHT IS LIVING HER BEST LIFE
Jill with her parents Julie and Dan Wright
Down syndrome occurs when the body produces an extra copy of chromosome 21. The CDC estimates that about 6,000 babies in the United States are born with Down syndrome each year. Jill’s mother Julie found out about Jill’s diagnosis when she was 20 weeks pregnant.
“I did a blood test and it came back as likely positive likely for Down syndrome,” Julie says. “I was shocked at the news. At that point in my life I didn’t have much of an understanding of Down syndrome. I called my husband Dan and we met at home. There were some tears because of the Writer / Renee Larr unknown. heart defect and potential of losing their child than the Down syndrome diagnosis. “We didn’t care about the delays she might have in the future,” Julie says. “We were focused on doing everything we could to help her survive. As the months went by, Jill and I had many tests done. They couldn’t hear her heartbeat on many occasions, so we would get an ultrasound almost every week. The great part about all that craziness was I got pictures of her.” The couple spent time meeting with doctors and researching Down syndrome. They wanted to provide Jill with the best tools possible after birth. She was born three weeks early on October 8, weighing in at 8 pounds, 2 ounces. Jill’s birth weight was higher than other babies with Down syndrome, which helped Jill’s survival. At six weeks old, Jill developed a fever and was admitted to the hospital. She was
sent home a week later only to suffer from congestive heart failure. The terrifying incident landed the Wright family back at the hospital. Jill’s doctor performed a heart catheterization, taking photos of the inside of her heart. This helped doctors develop a plan to repair her heart. Jill underwent open-heart surgery the following day, which lasted more than six hours.
Jill has performed the national anthem in ASL at various military and charity events, performed songs in ASL for a Linkin’ Bridge concert at the Brown Theatre, and for J.D. Shelburne benefitting Angels In Disguise. She even teaches ASL to 3- and 4-year-olds at Down Syndrome of Louisville. In 2019 Jill started working part time as the assistant to the theater department director at Mercy Academy. She auditioned for a role in the school’s production of “Godspell” and made quite the impression on Amanda Simmons, director of theater. She was cast in “Godspell” and later “Peter Pan.” Simmons loves Jill’s willingness to advocate for herself and take a chance on something new.
Jill spent much of her childhood dealing with different medical diagnoses while leading a reasonably normal life. She started therapy at Down Syndrome of Louisville at 19 days old, and group activities at 18 months old. Her family took her to and from therapy and doctor’s appointments for years. All the time spent shuttling Jill around led to a happy, healthy and thriving teenager. “One thing I love about Jill is her positivity,” Simmons says. “When she first started, she would talk to my students about what it “I started teaching Jill the basics of means to have Down syndrome and how American Sign Language when she was she wanted to be treated. treated just like them. I think it was good for my students to see and hear. She also has a great sense of humor. We laugh so much when we’re together. My students love her.” She works two days per week organizing, categorizing and logging scripts. Additionally, she works with Mercy Academy students on their monologues, providing feedback. The outgoing young adult loves to volunteer for local organizations like Down Syndrome of Louisville, Angels In Disguise, and Butterfly Backpacks, which provides necessities and encouraging notes to women at The Healing Place. “I just love helping other people,” Jill says. “It’s important to me to help anyone that needs it, and I have fun when I help them.” Her parents describe her as a very caring person who is always going out of her way for other people. she cares so much for others. Her father Dan knows many people don’t interact much with those with Down syndrome. They want people to see that the diagnosis of Down syndrome doesn’t make Jill or anyone else with the disease any different than anyone else. “We don’t call them disabilities,” Julie says. “We call them capabilities. People with Down syndrome are capable of having full lives. They have jobs, relationships, and are active in their communities just like anyone else.” Jill has modeled for many print advertisements and brochures. She’s played softball, basketball, cheerleading and golf in the Special Olympics with Dan as her proud softball coach. Her involvement in these various endeavors led to Jill being chosen as the Down Syndrome of Louisville 2020 Citizen of the Year.

“That was exciting for me,” Jill says. “It was
an honor to be selected.” She’s even met former President Jimmy Carter twice. The first time was at Sam’s Club at a book signing. The second was at his 90th birthday celebration in Plains, Georgia. Jill has lofty goals for her future. She will participate in the College Connections program at Bellarmine University in the fall. The new program was designed in conjunction with Down Syndrome of Louisville. Jill was quickly selected as one of two students to participate. “Jill and another student will be coming to campus twice a week to take up to two classes on campus per semester,” says Abigail Walsh, interim director for continuing education. “In addition, they will participate in social and community building activities while they’re here as well. It’s designed to give them the college experience.”

Jill is currently deciding what she’d like to study, and is interested in many areas of education. “I want to take classes in communication so I can keep presenting,” Jill says. “I’m interested in photography, technology, theater and maybe graphic design.” Jill and her family are incredibly appreciative of Down Syndrome of Louisville for their innovative programming, advocacy and support. “We’re just so thankful to them for all the help throughout the years,” Julie says. “We’re so lucky to have such a wonderful resource so close to home for Jill because many other families don’t have something similar in their area.” For more information on Down Syndrome of Louisville, visit dsoflou.org.

Staying in Tune PIPER MADISON TALKS MUSICAL GROWTH AND RETURN TO LOUISVILLE Rick Redding is a realtor with eXp Realty (502-439-6391). He owns and operates the longest-running and most interesting podcast in the ‘Ville - the Rusty Satellite Show. Writer / Rick Redding Photographer / Geoffrey Donne
Piper Madison has had her heart set on becoming a pop star for most of her 19 years. It’s no pie-in-the-sky dream, as the singer has a couple of self-produced albums to her credit and a large social media following, and was also voted by LEO Weekly readers as the Best Band/Musician Performing Original Music. While her career could be considered a full family enterprise, Madison thinks of herself as a do-it-yourself artist. The family includes her Louisville-based parents, Patrick and Rhonda Keesee, and younger sister Skylar. She produces her own music and performs as a solo artist, having mastered the use of a device called a looper that allows her to add the sounds of instruments while performing live.
“I think of myself as a DIY indie artist,” she said. “I’m a musician but also an entrepreneur, and I’ve got a lot of other things I’m trying to incorporate.” Madison’s start in show business began at an early age, and she was so promising as an actress and performer that the family decided to move to Los Angeles when she was just 9 years old. They came back to Louisville during the summers, but she and Skylar think of L.A. as the place they spent those formative years. Both girls had success landing gigs for modeling and acting. Madison’s big break came at age 13 when she landed the part of Zelphaba in the Nickelodeon series “100 Things to Do Before High School.” She released her debut album, “Who’s Running Your Mind,” in 2019 at the age of 16. Her single from that record, “Little Bit 14 / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com
of Rain,” reached number 14 on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs weekly list. Her second album, “How Do I Love?,” was released last fall, coinciding with her family’s move back to Louisville - a direct result of the pandemic. She said her music was a great way to keep her creativity going in those L.A. years, especially between acting gigs. “I actually started writing and picking up music in between auditions because the acting was kind of crazy, up and down and unpredictable, so in down times I picked up music,” she says. She soon found that music was the creative outlet she wanted to pursue. With the release of “How Do I Love?,” she started getting airplay on local station WFPK, received the LEO Weekly Award, and had some gigs at local outlets including the Blind Squirrel. Her family invested in
marketing, including billboards, to boost her numbers on sites like Spotify. An album release party in October was held at Black Rabbit in St. Matthews. Madison seems to have a rare gift for business as well. Unlike other rising stars, she does her own social media, posting on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and other social media, while making sure her music is available on sites like Spotify and Amazon Music. “I’m a musician but also an entrepreneur,” she says. “I find the best way to do something is to just start, and consider every failure as a learning experience that was necessary.”
Now ting Accep its! Depos
The hard work is already paying off. Her music found more than 90,000 listeners on Spotify alone in the last year, prompting her to post the numbers on Instagram along with this inspirational post: “When I made this post last year, I couldn’t have imagined it could possibly get any better. I don’t do this for the numbers - I do it for the positive impact and the true, authentic connections built. Even so, seeing this growth is comforting. It’s a reflection of all the work I’ve done, inside and out. I’m extremely grateful for the progress I’ve made this year, and all the people in my life who helped make that happen.

While Madison says her main goal is to eventually become a touring act and play on the road, she’s still 19 and hasn’t yet gotten a college degree. There’s an offer to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, but she says her future is more likely to include undergraduate studies at Centre College in Danville, quite a bit closer to home and her family. When describing her second album last fall, she said something about it that still rings true, even as she’s working on her next music project: “This is kind of a continuation of my mental, emotional and spiritual journey that I started with that first album.” It will be interesting to see where Madison’s journey takes her.

committed to continuing to reach audiences because, as he says, “theater belongs to everyone, everywhere.” As such, they developed a more expansive lens through which to view performances. Rather than producing live theater, which was not an option for a period of time, they figured out a way to beam themselves into classrooms from home.

Lina Chambers, education director at StageOne Family Theatre.
StageOne Family Theatre, Louisville’s premier children’s theater, has been entertaining young audiences for 75 years.
Through the last few years, there has been a lot of change within StageOne. With pandemic-related shutdowns, StageOne leaders, like everyone else, had to determine next steps. Andrew Harris, producing artistic director for StageOne, was

“The pandemic forced us to shift from putting on strong, professional work for young audiences here, locally, to having this magical opportunity to put our theater in a digital context and look at the tools we have to reach our audiences in new and different ways,” Chambers says. StageOne typically puts on four main stage productions each year at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. This year
they featured “Don’t Tell Me I Can’t Fly” and “Dragons Love Tacos.” “Don’t Tell Me I Can’t Fly” was about to open when COVID-19 cases spiked, so they filmed it and worked with the local school corporation to get the production into every Jefferson County Public Schools elementary classroom for students to see. They also built educational materials around it, because one of StageOne’s main focuses is on educating young people, from elementary through high school. For younger grades, that might include a team coming out to perform a book for students, whereas for high schools it may involve a teacher calling Chambers and requesting a service based on the school’s budget.

Chambers says. They also partner with the library system to perform stories at libraries throughout the city. “It’s mostly about the actors reading and acting out what’s happening within the book, and then finding places where the young people in the audience can build the environment around it,” Chambers says. “For instance, if they’re reading ‘Where the Wild Things Are,’ the performers would invite the audience to show their terrible teeth to create the forest of trees. It’s a more exciting way to read stories.” They intersperse big shows with smaller, community-engaged performances and interactions. “We’re always trying to stick our fingers into whatever pies we are able to,” Chambers says. “What’s great is that there are so many art makers and opportunities
throughout the city. We are always in each other’s inboxes asking, ‘Are you doing this thing?’ It’s very collaborative.” Before Chambers joined the staff at StageOne, she worked for a regional theater in Chicago that catered to adults. She got frustrated in that space because she had come from a community and a master’s program engaged with making art specifically for young audiences. “I didn’t know how much I’d miss that space,” Chambers says. “Being back in a [theater for young adults] space has been so exciting.” She notes that when they look out at the audience of young people for a main stage play, they are not only seeing people who want to tell stories up on stage, but also the spectrum of young people who are going to tell stories in a variety of ways. “The cool thing about theater is that we can incorporate all these other artistic mediums too,” Chambers says. “We need playwrights to create a story. We need music designers who figure out how to tell that story through Chambers’ parents were both painters. By the end, many students asked Chambers While she grew up with an appreciation for sound. FANTASTIC FACILITIES TRAGER FAMILY JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER HAS SOMETHING FOR ALL AGES Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided
The new Trager Family Jewish Community Center ( JCC) is opening this spring. The $43 million facility is located behind the current facility on Dutchmans Lane. It includes a year-round indoor aquatics facility, a modern, 37,000-square-foot fitness space offering 75-plus weekly group fitness classes, 50-plus cardio machines, a new performance room, a learning center for preschool children, and a multipurpose auditorium space that will serve as the new home of CenterStage.
The Trager family members have been longtime supporters of the Jewish community in Louisville and the new facility. The Trager family doubled their initial pledge of $1.5 million to $3 million, earmarked for construction of the new building. The new facility was designed to embody the Jewish community’s values. It was designed with purposeful spaces that reflect Jewish culture and welcome every person regardless of faith. The JCC partnered with architectural firm GBBN to create the new building. It’s broken into three main areas - the heart, mind and soul, according to Susan 26 / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com
Kwasny, JCC fitness director. She calls the main lobby the heart of the building. The ceiling features a large display of hexagons that create the Star of David. The heart then opens to the body, the state-of-the-art fitness center as well as indoor and outdoor aquatics. The Early Learning Center nourishes the minds of young children. The project was under construction for 18 months. On March 10, Governor Andy Beshear attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony to dedicate the new building. “The ribbon cutting was wonderful,” Kwasny says. “Having the governor there
signified how important this project is to the whole community. We want to serve the Jewish community and the general public alike. We wanted to make sure this was a place where everyone felt welcome.” The fitness center is more than just a place for members to work out, Kwasny says. “We want to be a multifaceted center,” she says. “We want to provide fitness opportunities, aquatics opportunities, arts programming and preschool. We want to be a one-stop shop for families.” The fitness center includes a dedicated performance room with TRX straps, squat racks, barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls and more. The center is equipped with new Peloton bikes, 45’ of indoor turf for strength training and conditioning, and an elevated indoor track. In-house services include personal training, massage services, physical therapy and nutrition coaching.

IDEAS TO MAKE
Father’s Day SPECIAL THIS YEAR Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
It’s time to start thinking about all those wonderful fathers, grandpas and other father figures in your life. You know, the guys who make you laugh at their dad jokes, keep you going when times get tough, and love you as you are. Father’s Day is the perfect time to celebrate dads, and because they are so special and do so much for us day in and day out, here are some fun ideas to treat that fatherly figure in your life this year.
30 / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com
1
CREATE NEW MEMORIES
Pile the family into the car and head out to somewhere you know your dad loves. Does your dad love being outdoors? Maybe take him to a state park and explore a new hiking trail. Does he love the beach? Maybe head to the closest beach or water park. Does he love movies? Pack up the car with snacks, food and fun, and head to the best drive-in you know. Spending quality time with your dad will make for some awesome new memories. Oh, and try to leave the electronics at home!
GET OUTTA HERE
Let dad have a minute and stay out of his way for a bit. We all know moms enjoy quiet time on Mother’s Day, so why not change the tune and let dads have some time to themselves too? You can send him away with a gift card to the hardware store or maybe to the movies if he doesn’t feel weird going by himself. Maybe even a voucher for a casino - many guys would enjoy that. Whatever you decide, just make sure to give him enough time to feel refreshed.

GRILL HIM
3 5
Grilling with a cold beer in hand has been a long-preferred pastime for many men (dads especially), for many, many years. There’s something about being able to say “Look at that steak” that gets them going. So why not “grill him” to find out if he needs a new grill or new grill tools? Grill him and find out what he needs or wants for his outdoor kitchen space. While you are at it, ask him about his favorite food to grill. Surprise him with his favorite steaks, sides and some new tools - and if you feel good about grilling, surprise him with a fully grilled meal in his honor.
HAVE A BALL
What dad isn’t a sports fan? Do a quick search for ball games happening near you. Even dads who prefer certain sports over others won’t turn down an opportunity to go to a sporting event. Baseball is an obvious favorite for this time of year, but you might even treat him to tickets to a game featuring his favorite sports team, even if it’s not happening on this Father’s Day.
BREAKFAST IN BED

Is this a thing for dads? If it isn’t, it should be. I mean, why not? Many dads enjoy sleeping in for sure, so get up early, let him sleep a little late, and then treat him with “I Heart Dad” pancakes, hearty bacon or sausage, a little bit of his favorite fruit, and maybe a Bloody Mary if tomato juice is his thing. He’ll love it and he definitely won’t be expecting it.
WRITE HIM A LETTER
Write something that tells this special man in your life how you feel about him. Tell him about all the things he’s done for you, how he’s made you into a better human, or even just how funny he is with his lame dad jokes. You could even try to write some new dad jokes for him, or better yet, about him! Whatever you tell him you love about him, he will love and cherish in return. Even better, frame it with people going back to the office, this would be a great new addition for him to hang up on the wall.
Happy Father’s Day!
Of all the great things you can do to celebrate your special man this Father’s Day, make sure it’s something he loves. If he loves hanging with you and the family, great. If he loves spending time alone, great. If he loves visiting his dad, great. Whatever route you take this year, make sure it’s all about him. He’s going to love making memories with you, hearing from you, and/or bonding with you, no matter what you end up doing.

After all, much of Lyndon’s rich history is its proximity to, and use of, the former Lynn’s Station train depot, which kept Lyndon residents from having to drive into St. Matthews to catch a train to Louisville. There will be a wide variety of music throughout the event. Friday night headliners will be the legendary Crashers. On Saturday night the main stage will present our internationally traveled band, Caribou. During the afternoon on Saturday, you will not want to miss Westport Middle School’s Rock N’ Warhawks (electric

The entire Lyndon Summer Festival will be staged in Lyndon’s hidden gem, Robsion Park. Its 17-acres of astounding beauty feature two pavilions, two age-appropriate playgrounds, a splash pad, three-eighths of mile of walking paths, and picnic tables. While at the event, be sure to watch out for Lyndon’s hard-working Mayor Brent Hagan and say hello.
