KASTEN’S DOG TRAINING HELPS DOGS LIVE THEIR BEST LIVES

Steve Kasten, owner of Kasten’s Dog Training, says that after spending several years in the corporate world, he was ready to take on a new challenge. He opened his own business and hasn’t regretted his decision.

“I founded the business in March 2006,” Kasten said. “We are a family-run business that was founded to become a pet dog training company. After 18 years in the corporate world as a director of operations, I felt the need to take a leap of faith and start my own business. I began Contain-A-Pet

by Kasten’s Dog Training, Inc., installing electronic pet fencing.”

Kasten realized he wanted to focus most of his energy on dog training, addressing dogs who would benefit from behavior modification due to fearful, shy, timid or aggressive behavior.

“I went to a nationally renowned school for dog trainers to enhance my knowledge of dogs and their behaviors,” he said. “There, I received certification for obedience and

behavior modification.”

In April 2016, Kasten opened a new training center and boarding facility.

“After 11 years of selling, installing and servicing electronic pet fencing, and with much thought and prayer, I felt a strong need for my presence at our new facility,” Kasten said. “I relinquished the dealership in 2017. I wanted to concentrate on training, behavioral modification and boarding. I also wanted to concentrate on

continuing education for myself and the staff so that we could breathe life into each dog. That is our motto: ‘Breathing life into your dog.’”

It’s a dog training and boarding facility that offers training programs via residency, private lessons, group lessons and train-andgo lessons.

“We board dogs for families who are traveling, completing home renovations, having surgery, or whatever reason for which they need support with caring for their dog,” Kasten said. “We also offer puppy preschool and residency puppy training. We use marker training - a compassionate, balanced and fair method of dog training. Dogs learn quickly with this training method. It is like clicker training, except you can simply use your voice instead of carrying a clicker with you. When you use your voice, your dog will be focused on you and your commands. They are visual learners and they are selfish by nature. We must learn to communicate at their level, not ours.”

Kasten said they offer group classes for dogs over 18 weeks, and puppy preschool on Monday nights for puppies eight to 17 weeks old.

Kasten’s also has residency programs. “The residency programs are ideal for people going on vacations or long weekends, busy lifestyles, families with small children, etcetera - or who are just uncomfortable in the training process,” Kasten said. “Based

on the owner’s goals, we will train your dog, provide training videos, pictures, a phone pre-training call, follow-up lessons, and Barks Passes. All training equipment is included. Plus, we are a phone call away for assistance. Of course, we can train your dog to perform for us, but our specialty lies in the ability to transfer these skills to you and your family members.”

Kasten’s also offers boarding services.

“We board dogs 18 weeks and older at a standard daily rate,” Kasten said. “Puppies

eight to 17 weeks are given additional attention to work on potty training and socialization, and can be boarded at a puppy rate. We encourage families who need to board their puppy to consider our All-Star puppy program, either an eight-day or 16-day residency where we work on all things puppy.”

Kasten said he enjoys working with his Puppy Preschool, residency dog training programs, and Barks & Recreation program.

Kasten believes one of the best aspects of owning a dog is learning from it.

“They are very forgiving,” he said. “They greet you when you come home and provide plenty of joy. These are all qualities we should be practicing with our fourlegged friends, family, friends, neighbors and coworkers. After working with dogs professionally for over 18 years, I have learned patience is the greatest gift dogs have given me. The calmer I am and the more respectful I am, the better the dog can be.”

Kasten’s Dog Training has become a household name when it comes to discussions related to dog behaviors, training and boarding, in Elkhart County and beyond.

“We have had owners come from Fort Wayne, Chicago, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and Indianapolis,” Kasten said. “We have trained puppies whose owners need support and bring their puppy to us, as well as owners who want a puppy that has been through our All-Star Program coming directly from the breeder, prior to going home with mom and dad. I have a heart to help dogs who are shy, timid, fearful and anxious, or have aggression concerns. I want them to live their best life through training and desensitization that builds confidence.”

Brandon Alfano can scarcely remember a time when he wasn’t enthralled by a vision of life on the waterfront. In the middle of Kosciusko County, the renowned land of lakes, the picturesque shorelines are as plentiful as the roads there - which means, in a sense, wherever Alfano goes, it will always feel like home.

Alfano’s enchantment with lake life ties back to his childhood, visiting his grandparents at their lakeside cabin. “I took a liking to it right away,” he says. “I was just naturally drawn to lakes.”

Now, he can count himself among the fortunate few who have successfully parlayed their passion into a wellestablished career. Alfano is the owner of Alfano’s Pier and Lift, which he founded in 2020. The business is a culmination of time spent living and learning about the ways to maximize the benefits of shoreside properties.

Alfano began to cultivate his skills in the mechanics of pier and lift installation shortly after his graduation from high school. He spent time honing his trade with a few area companies before realizing that his talents had elevated his resume to the extent that he was able to launch his own business.

Being outside, socializing with customers, and not being in an office were some of the immediate perks that Alfano noticed initially. It did not take long for his solid work experience and reputation to reach prospective clients. In the four years since Alfano’s Pier and Lift was created, the company that began with just six accounts now exceeds 350 accounts. Sales have also approached the $2 million threshold and those numbers continue to rise.

Even so, Alfano continues to plan for more ways to grow and expand. His goal is to build upon the sales aspect of the business, offering new and used styles of piers and lifts. In particular, he is looking to feature more inventory from the Ryco product line. Included in that inventory is an array of all-

What began as a mere dream for Richard and Rachel Fry became a reality several years ago, when Richard heard the news of a Shipshewana restaurant that was going up for sale.

What intrigued him was the restaurant business in general, but also the breakfast and lunch hours. After working in the management business for more than 10 years, Richard was ready for a change of pace. The husband-and-wife team now has grandkids, as well as children still living at home. Purchasing the restaurant seemed like the perfect opportunity to be able to spend more time with family and friends.

After purchasing the restaurant, known as Country Corral Restaurant, Richard and Rachel got right to work. Richard is in charge of daily operations, including hiring and firing, to create a friendly and professional team. Whether you are interested in being a server, hostess or cook, Richard is who you will meet with.

Rachel is in charge of creating mouth-watering dishes from scratch. One of her most popular items that people travel near and far to enjoy is her homemade cinnamon roll. Customers can enjoy this sweet treat in the restaurant with a cup of coffee or juice, or simply swing by and take some to go. However, make sure to get there before they are all gone.

As far as the rest of the menu goes, customers can enjoy delicious breakfast and lunch items. As business continues to boom, Richard and Rachel have considered expanding the restaurant. However, Richard says “bigger isn’t always better” and many customers like the restaurant just the way it is. Instead, Country Corral is considering adding a banquet hall right inside the restaurant. What were some of your father’s favorite dishes, and where did he prefer to eat his meals? Did you sit around a kitchen table and talk about your day? Maybe he ate in the living room while watching his favorite television program. It could have been a show that the whole family enjoyed. If so, what did he watch? Do you find yourself still preparing the same kind of dishes for you or your own family? Did your father tell you to eat all your vegetables because they were good for you? Even those round canned peas you didn’t like so much. What about barbecues outside? Perhaps you are thinking of your dad cooking over the grill to make hamburgers and hot dogs, probably smelling like smoke, but you were getting excited because you knew the food was going to be done soon. Yes, there are definitely certain smells and fragrances that can remind us of our dads.

One of my fond memories is that my father would take each kid out individually for a Coke. We could sit and visit him with

no interruptions from other siblings. I could talk to him about anything that was on my mind, and know I had his full attention, maybe even his advice. I really looked forward to this special time with my dad. He took out all six children, rotating each kid every Sunday. To this day I still love to go out - except now it’s coffee instead of Coke - and just sit and talk about what is on my mind. Whether it’s a big issue or nothing too exciting, it’s something I still look forward to.

Father’s Day can bring about many different feelings. The memories can be exclusively positive, but not necessarily for everyone. For some, thinking of their dad only stirs up sadness. Others may not have had a father in their lives at all. Still, there is the possibility that your father is no longer here and you just miss him deeply

As a child hanging out with your dad, maybe he was a superhero, someone you looked up to, flawless and never seeming to make any mistakes. Of course when you are older you find out that they are human like the rest of us. Still, for the most part, you think they’re pretty fabulous. Maybe he worked really hard to take care of the family - day shift, night shift, long hours in the office or at a factory. He could have even been on the road driving a big truck, making sure there were always clothes to wear so you stayed warm in the winter and cool in the summer. There was food on the table to eat.

It is nice to see how I have taken some of these memories and made them my own. My mother used to make tapioca pudding for my dad and he really liked it. She is no longer here, so for Father’s Day I make him homemade tapioca pudding and he absolutely loves it. It’s just a small way to show him that I love him. Isn’t it funny how food can be used to show someone you care? It’s a way to bring friends and family together. Food is so much more than just nourishment. It’s a way of connecting with other people and having a good time doing it.

If we give thought to the matter at all, most of us attribute the origins of the megahit movies, TV shows, toys, and e verything else franchise “Star Wars” to its creator and initial writer, George Lucas -- which is certainly correct and fair enough.

But few of us likely realize that what we think of visually with regards to the Star Wars universe -- especially its initial design

work -- from the look of the many spaceships, weapons, and landscapes, to that villain-of-villains, Darth Vader himself, is owed to a Lake County, Indiana man.

Ralph Angus McQuarrie was born June 13th, 1929, in Gary, Indiana, the son of parents who were both artists themselves, though Ralph started his formal art training at the age of 10.

McQuarrie’s family moved to Billings, Montana during his childhood, followed by moves to the west coast and Canada. After graduating high school, he went on to serve in the Korean War, where he survived being shot in the head due to the unlikely interference of his helmet lining.

McQuarrie went on to study at the Art Centre College of Design in California after which he took a job with the Boeing Company in Seattle as a technical illustrator. Eventually moving to California, he would produce art for NASA that was used on the CBS News live coverage of the Apollo space program that was viewed by millions. While in California, he began doing freelance artwork for movie studios, painting background scenes for animated programs and generating artwork for movie posters.

It was the rejection of George Lucas’s proposal for his new science fiction fantasy film by two major movie studios that led to

McQuarrie’s providential involvement in what would become “Star Wars” -- and his artwork was critical in a multitude of ways to not only the project’s success, but its overall look to today. Despite the fact, as McQuarrie would later go on to note, he had no prior interest in the science fiction or fantasy genres.

Lucas had written “Star Wars” but realized he needed a visual proposal to sell the idea to studios, which is where McQuarrie came in in 1975. His conceptual drawings and paintings were unique and original, and -- especially as the two collaborated to reach a shared vision of the aesthetics of the story -- beautifully suited to conveying the grandeur, complexity and stirring sense of romance, adventure, and fantasy undergirding Lucas’s story.

While the looks of characters like Darth Vader and R2D2, C3PO and Chewbacca (not to mention the array of signature spacecraft so integral to the films) morphed somewhat from McQuarrie’s artwork by the time they hit the big screen, they’re among many visual elements of “Star Wars” that have remained very much intact as the central look of the series from its beginnings.

One of McQuarrie’s earliest paintings became iconic: droids C3PO and R2D2 on the desert planet Tatooine. Anthony Daniels, who went on to play C3PO in the “Star Wars” films, was impacted heavily by the image and later said that, without that painting as inspiration, he would not have become C3PO.

The art convinced 20th Century Fox studios to finance the first “Star Wars” film, which became a blockbuster after its release in 1977. As the New York Times wrote in McQuarrie’s 2012 obituary, the artist had transformed Lucas’s “rudimentary concepts and earliest scripts into lush, vivid images of intergalactic expanse and light-saber combat,” which became the “the visual core of the “Star Wars” saga.”

To put it simply, as the Justacarguy blog wrote in 2021, “Without Ralph McQuarrie, there would be no “Star Wars.”

McQuarrie’s artwork, including background matte paintings, was incorporated into “Star Wars” sequels “The Empire Strikes Back” (which included the big screen debut of one of his most popular designs, that of bounty hunter Boba Fett) in 1980, and “Return of the Jedi” in 1983, and his conceptual artwork was utilized in movies ranging from “E.T.” to “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” to “Jurassic Park.”

Lucas’s Industrial Light and Magic company also took home an Academy Award (for Best Visual Effects) in 1985 for the movie “Cocoon,” for which McQuarrie was the concept artist.

And, while McQuarrie declined to apply his craft to the “Star Wars” prequel films of the 1990s and early 2000s, the more recent sequel trilogy pulled in previously unused elements from his conceptual art. That’s also true of some of the franchise’s forays into television. Among others, the character design for Rebel hero Zeb Orrelios from

the popular TV series “Rebels” is taken from an early (rejected) design for Chewbacca by McQuarrie.

The Hasbro toy company even created a line of action figures based on his conceptual art, according to his New York Times obituary.

McQuarrie himself noted that his approach is a blend of “the romantic and what looks interesting while half my mind is occupied

with practicality,” which perhaps explains the genius of his approach. “Star Wars” exemplifies his mixture of fantasy imagery with down-to-earth aeronautic or military costuming designs.

He also affirmed a sense a gratification of seeing his “Star Wars” artwork, in particular, having become “part of the public happening,” and seeing the results of his design on the likes of everything from the cover of Time Magazine to bubblegum wrappers on the street.

Following McQuarrie’s death in 2012, Lucas said of him: “His genial contribution, in the form of unequalled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy. When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph’s fabulous illustrations and say, ‘do it like this’. We will all be benefiting from his oeuvre for generations to come.

“Beyond that, I will always remember him as a kind, patient and wonderfully talented friend and collaborator.” That, and a native Hoosier boy from Lake County.

INGREDIENTS

• 6 Italian sub rolls

• 6 slices Genoa salami

• 6 slices capocollo

• 6 slices Calabrese salami

• 6 slices provolone cheese

• 1⁄3 cup banana pepper rings from jar

• 3 pepperoncinis from jar

• 1 red onion

• 2 cups chopped green lettuce

• 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

• 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

• 1 1⁄2 cups mayonnaise

• 1⁄2 teaspoon salt

• 1 teaspoon coarse black pepper

• 2 teaspoon dried oregano, plus more for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Remove seeds from pepperoncinis and discard. Finely chop banana peppers, pepperoncinis, red onion and lettuce. Add to a large mixing bowl.

2. Next, chop calabrese salami, Genoa salami, capocollo and provolone cheese into small pieces. Add to the mixing bowl.

3. Add mayo, red wine vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper and oregano to the bowl.

4. Use a wooden spoon and thoroughly mix chopped sandwich ingredients until well-combined. Scoop into the sub rolls and top with a pinch of oregano.

With an extensive staff of 80 caregivers and six office support employees to round out the Karing Hearts team, the Yoder women are more than sufficiently prepared to respond to requests for assistance seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Their response time is expeditious, often being on-site within a few hours at most.

What the services entail, meanwhile, is as unique as the individuals themselves, Yoder says. A visit from Karing Hearts could involve assisting with household tasks, lending an extra set of hands for personal-care needs, doing some shopping, or providing companionship. Kylie reflects on her mother’s love for her career, saying she’s “grown up hearing her talk to clients and their families,” which allowed her to be raised in the same environment of love and empathy.

“I feel like the title speaks for itself,” Kim says, regarding what sets Karing Hearts in a class of its own. “We have compassionate caregivers that are doing what they’re called to do. They go above and beyond every day. When you do what you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”

The team will be working this year to further establish their newer South Bend location, and the business is fully licensed, bonded and insured. They have also maintained a favorable standing with the Better Business Bureau. Their primary service areas include St. Joseph, Elkhart, Kosciusko and LaGrange counties, along with southern Michigan.
