6 | May 2024 | TownePost.com HEART OF A LION KIDS LEARN THE VALUE OF GIVING BACK THROUGH THE LIONS CLUB CUB PROGRAM Writer / Mike Dikos Photography Provided Paul & Angie Caudill Rochester, Indiana (574) 835-0387 6786 N 250 W Rochester, IN 46975 Call or Text Paul Caudill Cell: 574-835-0387 Home: 574-223-4855 Trucking • Excavating Demolition • Ponds Septics • Water Line Site Prep Insurance Work Land & Fence Row Clearing Driveways Black Dirt • Gravel Sand • Fill • Limestone Cell: The inception of Bass Lake Lions Cub Club, started with Kasen and Quinn volunteering to help at the Lions Pancake Breakfast July 2023.
The Lions Club is an international service organization with the goal of helping the community, both locally and globally. With a motto simply stating “we serve,” their presence is felt in the neighborhood as well as on the world stage.
The Lions Club was founded in 1917 by a Chicago businessman. After a discussion with his fellow business associates, Melvin Jones pitched the idea of serving the needs within the community as well as those of the world. Meetings were held, a constitution was adopted, ethics were established, and thus the Lions Clubs were born.
The Lions Club’s Cub program is a branch within the organization that instills the delight that one attains from helping someone in need to children aged 12 and under. Kindness, generosity, and the satisfaction of providing for someone less fortunate are some of the traits that a Cub learns from acts of service. The Cub program teaches children that helping
someone in need can be a truly exhilarating experience. Volunteering allows a child to see life from another viewpoint, by seeing that their service is appreciated and important.
At a recent pancake breakfast, President Gloria Ballard was approached by some children who wanted to help with the event. Seeing their eagerness and zeal to assist, in September of 2023 a Cub program within the Bass Lake Lions came to fruition. Children now have a formal setting in which they can volunteer and support the community, as well as provide assistance to those in need around the world. The Cub program currently has 15 members who work on a variety of community projects. Each member receives a badge and certificate for their involvement in the organization.
Many of the projects that the Cubs are involved with have a direct impact on those less fortunate. During the past holiday

season they volunteered with the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign to raise money for various programs to help the needy. Two other examples of fundraising that the Cubs participate in are the Keys for Cancer and the Pop Tabs for Riley’s. The Keys for Cancer program involves the collection of keys that are no longer needed. The keys are collected and recycled, with the proceeds going to the Lions Cancer Control Fund of Indiana. Pop Tabs for Riley’s is a way to
put pull tabs from your favorite beverage to good use. The Cubs place containers throughout the community where one can contribute their pull tabs. The tabs are recycled and the proceeds go directly to Riley children’s hospitals. These small acts of service by the Cubs provide a big impact for those who need it.
The Dictionary Project is a way that the Lions provide a valuable service to
elementary school children who might not have the benefit of the internet. This program provides third-grade students in Knox and North Judson with a physical dictionary to assist in their studies. This past year, the Cubs were actively involved in the distribution of the dictionaries to Knox Elementary. A grant from the Starke County Community Foundation helped in the funding of this much-appreciated program.

The Cubs hold organized meetings just like their adult counterparts. Meetings are called to order by Kasen and Quinn McLaughlin, who serve as president and vice president of the group. The meetings are a place where the children work on projects together, and they also provide the opportunity for them to get together with their friends. The making of friendship bracelets was a recent project by the Cubs. Each member made two bracelets - one for themselves and
another for someone special. The passing of friendship on to someone else, a small gesture of kindness in itself, truly results in a much larger feeling of gratification.
The Cubs also visited nursing homes during the holidays. Small gifts and cards were created and passed out to nursing-home residents.
“Getting children involved at an early
age is a great way for them to see their appreciation and keep them involved,” says Ballard.
They might be young, but these children truly have the hearts of lions within.
Those interested in joining the Cubs can put in a request at the Starke County Public Library, or contact Ballard at g.mclaughlinballard@yahoo.com.

Biggby at Bailey’s Discount Center is part of the BIGGBY ® COFFEE chain of coffee shops. However, the Biggby at Bailey’s goes beyond the expected to the wonderfully unexpected.
Someone visiting for the first time might arrive expecting the company’s signature farm-direct coffee bean drinks that are the foundation of the BIGGBY ® COFFEE brand, and they would find them. Indeed, the Biggby at Bailey’s baristas make every coffee drink from scratch, from the White Lightning Latte to the Espresso Macchiato. There is also a kids’ menu with crowd pleasers including Magic Milk, flavored hot “steamers” and, for a truly decadent choice, a cup of whipped cream.
And it doesn’t stop there. Biggby at Bailey’s has a mouth-watering menu of sweet and savory items to complete your order, such as
the Coffee Cake Muffin and Toasted Cheese Ciabatta. Spring featured items include White Chocolate Macadamia Latte and Hot Honey Bacon Grilled Cheese.
Not only does Biggby at Bailey’s offer an extensive menu of specialty drinks and delicious food items, but the spacious lobby within Bailey’s Discount Center also allows Owner Katie Holland the opportunity

to make their Biggby truly unique, by welcoming guests into an innovative community atmosphere.
“With the overriding values of BIGGBY ® COFFEE as our guide, Biggby at Bailey’s has grown into what I like to refer to as My Biggby, because we incorporate clever ways to connect with our customers,” Holland says.
One way Holland brings people from around the community together is by transforming the lobby space into a platform for local businesses and entrepreneurs, featuring local artist exhibits and live music on the last Friday of each month.
Last October, on a hunch that families would respond to a kid-friendly event, Holland planned a party that she called the “Bluey Event” on social media, and invited parents to bring their child to Biggby at Bailey’s and have fun drinking whimsical, themed drinks and take photos with Bluey cutouts. What started as an experimental event exploded into a family favorite, and more than 200 parents and kids attended from communities as far as Valparaiso and Fort Wayne.
Since then, Holland has held more events, which tap her creativity and commitment to the community. Past events included “Galentine’s Tea and Flowers,” when Holland partnered with a local florist to offer a make-your-own-bouquet class while enjoying a favorite tea. Another popular event was the “Valentine’s Day Date Night” with coffee flights and live music, aligning the vibe of Biggby at Bailey’s as a sort of craft brewery approach to coffee. Holland took her ideas offsite for the festive holiday

event “Photos with Santa” at Five Buds Farm, when she again partnered with a local photographer to make it a truly memorable day for families.
Holland advertises events with signage in the lobby and on the shop’s Facebook and Instagram pages, which are the most active sources for news and events at Biggby at Bailey’s. Their app also contains up-to-date menu items and specials. Ads for Biggby at

Holland had four years of experience as a barista at a national coffee shop chain before she opened Biggby at Bailey’s with her husband, Jake, and father, Matt Bailey, in 2020, at a time when COVID-19 forced many businesses to close. The team at Biggby at Bailey’s kept the doors open, learned how to meet people where they were, and won loyal customers they now

refer to as fanatics.
Two years ago, when Holland and Jake were married, they bought out her father’s portion of the business to take on full ownership. Jake came to the business with a background in restaurants and sales, and the couple brought a winning mix of prioritizing quality products and thoughtful guest experience. They welcomed their son, Motley, last year, and he has become part of the family atmosphere that sets the tone for customers visiting Biggby at Bailey’s.
With four years, one pandemic and a soon-to-be toddler in tow, and Holland knows that one of the key components to the shop’s success is the dedicated team of baristas.
“Our baristas, most of whom have been with us since we opened four years ago, are a key component to the success of the shop,” she says.
Holland credits a former manager from her early days as a barista for modeling good management, and she draws on those characteristics in building a healthy workspace with a culture of respect and fun. Recently, Holland took some of the baristas to the annual corporate BIGGBY Summit, where they met coffee bean farmers from around the world who are fulfilling the BIGGBY ® COFFEE mission. Another way Holland nurtures team engagement is by organizing events outside of working hours. The group might meet for dinner or attend a South Bend Cubs game, all in the name of fueling friendship beyond the barista bar.
So it’s no surprise that the Biggby at Bailey’s team is right there to help as Holland and her husband plan the upcoming opening of BaileyTown Burgers, in adjacent store space in the Discount Center lobby. The burger joint is scheduled to open by the end of this year, but the many hours of preparation and planning have already begun, and whether the task at hand is reorganizing shelving or
rearranging fixtures, it’s an all-in attitude among everyone.
“The extra work is a great way for someone wanting to log more hours in the week, and everyone seems to enjoy the variety of projects,” Holland says. BaileyTown Burgers will offer classic American food including burgers, hot dogs, fries and chicken fingers. Watch the Biggby at Bailey’s Facebook and Instagram pages for more information about the opening in the coming months.
You can learn more about all the specialty menu items and fun events on Facebook and Instagram @biggbyatbaileys. For additional information and to place an online order, download their app by searching BIGGBY COFFEE and choosing the North Judson location.

therapy and treatment. When faced with trauma, grief, depression, sleep disorders and other behavioral issues, receiving care in a timely manner is critical. At Knox Winamac Community Health Center, patients seeking help can be seen as quickly as the same day they call.
“This is a huge advantage to people who often face much longer wait times at larger medical providers,” says Lori Truesdell, the licensed clinical social worker at the center. Truesdell points out that some community health centers have up to a year of wait time for a patient to be seen and treated.
One way the center can offer faster service is through telehealth, which is a video call program available on Fridays so that Truesdell can engage with a patient who is not able to come to the center in person. However, her preference is to see patients in person when possible. Truesdell has been practicing for nearly

35 years, and acknowledges that someone needing help or therapy can experience anxiety about making the appointment. She highlights how crucial it is for that person to be seen in a timely manner, and limit their likelihood of backing out of the appointment.
Truesdell encourages anyone teetering on needing help to reach out, and see how easy it is to be seen at the center, within a week or sometimes even the same day. Connecting someone in need of treatment with a professional trained to address and resolve mental health issues can be a pivotal point in a person’s path to better health.
“With my telehealth offerings, I can provide services to anyone in the state,” Truesdell says. “We provide short-term, crisiscentered intervention care solutions, as well as long-term therapy. We also consult with a patient’s primary medical provider to assess a patient’s individual needs.”
The center has two medical doctors and two nurse practitioners on staff, and they are supported by medical assistants and other staff to ensure a patient feels cared for throughout the treatment process.
Knox Winamac Community Health Center commonly serves patients who learn about the center from an existing patient who might be a friend or family member, as well as referrals from hospitals and other medical providers. Patients undergoing care at a hospital might be referred to the center for follow-up therapy and treatment, including short- and long-term mental health care. The medical staff evaluates and monitors patient needs, including strategic psychotropic medication recommendations. For a full list of services, call the office to speak to a team member.
Community is a genuine priority of Knox Winamac Community Health Center. When a person experiences a death in the family, trauma or grief, the center is a
trusted source for help. Military veterans in need of therapy and treatment can turn to a program called Tri-Care, which lists Truesdell and the center as a provider. The center also works with patients under Medicare and Medicaid. The center’s health providers are also available for speaking to school and college groups, and Truesdell emphasizes the need to reach younger adults in their 20s and 30s, to introduce them to the accessibility of therapy and other health services at the center.
The center does accept new patients. Truesdell only cares for patients over the age of 12. To make an appointment for any type of service, call 574-772-6030. You can also reach them via email at kwchc@kwchc.net for questions.

Having worked in the RV industry for years, Myron Lehman already knew the ins and outs of the business prior to co-founding his one-of-akind RV service shop.
For example, he realized what customers so greatly wanted and needed, to bring the vision for their RV travels to life. At the same time, he saw the lead times were not ideal, especially for those with upcoming trip. Many RV repair shops are so large that the individual customer can get looked over or put down farther on the list. For these reasons among others, Lehman decided to break off from his previous job and start Landstar RV Service.
So, Lehman shut the door on his prior RV manufacturing job and joined forces with his neighbor to start up an RV service shop.
One of their most popular and unique services is solar installation, and they utilize the highest-quality materials. Some

of their top solar brands include Victron Energy, MidNite Solar, Battle Born Batteries and more. One of the greatest benefits of upgrading your RV with a solar install is the
ability to go off the grid without the need to worry about where you will source your power. Lehman describes this as going “boondocking,” and you can travel virtually
anywhere, including parks or simply in the middle of nowhere. It provides a great sense of relief to the RV owner knowing they do not have to worry about constantly charging up.
Another popular option they offer is mobile RV repair service. Landstar will travel to you, up to a 75-mile radius, to provide service to your RV by their highly professional team. Mobile services include refrigerators, awnings, furnaces, water heaters, electrical, plumbing, winterizing and de-winterizing, and full RV inspections.
Prefer to stop by the shop? Lehman and his team will gladly answer any questions you have. Whether you are a highly experienced owner or brand new to owning an RV, there is no question too great or small.
When it comes to the services they offer at the actual shop, it includes everything they offer on their mobile service plus some additional services. These include metal changes, bodywork, floor repairs,

A LIVING HOOSIER MEMORIAL
As Memorial Day approaches, many Hoosiers’ minds turn to a unique location in the capital city of the Hoosier state, an iconic landmark representing not only Indianapolis, but all of Indiana.
You’d be forgiven for thinking the setup
above refers to that most iconic of Indiana traditions, that of the Indianapolis 500. Incidentally, that race will take place, as always, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which, since 2019 has been owned by Roger Penske, a racing legend in his own right with a local connection - Penske attended Culver Academies’ summer Woodcraft Camp in his
youth, graduating in 1950.
But let’s not forget on what weekend the race takes place. Memorial Day has been set aside since the end of the Civil War to remember those fallen in battle in various wars and conflicts. The legacy of the Civil War played a central role in the creation of

the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in the heart of Indianapolis, the first monument in the United States dedicated to the common soldier (rather than individual leaders).
Even if it’s impossible to overlook visually if one is anywhere near downtown Indianapolis (it holds the distinction of being the largest outdoor memorial in Indiana), it’s all too easy to overlook the monument historically, and its significance in honoring the contributions of Indiana’s veterans.
The monument’s cornerstone was laid 135 years ago on August 22, 1889, though its formal dedication took place 122 years ago this month, on May 15, 1902, with a crowd of thousands on-hand alongside a parade of flags and veterans of the MexicanAmerican, Civil, and Spanish-American wars. Other central participants that day have regional connections to this area as well. Keynote speaker General Lew Wallace, a Crawfordsville native and author of “Ben
Hur,” the bestselling book of the 19th century after the Bible, wrote parts of that book at Bass Lake and Lake Maxinkuckee.
“Hoosier Poet” James Whitcomb Riley read a poem written especially for the day, “The Soldier.” Among other connections, Riley was a visitor to Lake Maxinkuckee as well, and wrote a poem, “Life at the Lake,” about that body of water. Even internationally acclaimed bandleader and composer John Philip Sousa, who wrote a march entitled “The Messiah of the Nations” for the dedication ceremony, has a minor local connection. He composed “The Black Horse Troop March” in honor of the horses of the Black Horse Troop that would help bring fame to the Culver Military Academy.
The location of the monument holds its own significance in the history of Indianapolis. In the wake of the city’s founding in 1821, a three-acre plot of land was planned as the city center, with the intention that it would eventually

house the residence of Indiana’s governor (the structure built for that purpose was never used for it, but instead was home to various entities including the Indiana State Library and State Bank of Indiana). The location was long used for outdoor public gatherings, especially in the years following the Civil War. A sculpture depicting Oliver P. Morton, Indiana’s governor during the Civil War, was dedicated there in 1884, though talk of a monument, especially one
memorializing Indiana’s Civil War dead, was already underway at the time.
Of the 1,350,428 total state population in the 1860s, some 210,000 Union soldiers, sailors and marines from Indiana served in the war, with over 35%, or 24,416, losing their lives (that number eventually grew to 25,028 to include those who died of disease or longer-term wounds). Additionally, around 48,568 Hoosier soldiers were
wounded.
The year 1875 saw a 10-year reunion of Hoosier veterans of the War Between the States held in Indianapolis, and during that event newspaper editor George J. Langsdale proposed a plan for the monument that was to come, with the Indiana Department of the Grand Army of the Republic raising over $23,000 over the next 12 years towards bringing the plan to fruition.
Appropriations made by the Indiana General Assembly joined with public donations, additional appropriations and added property taxes, to raise nearly $600,000 over the next 20 years to complete the project, which was begun in 1888 and continued over the next 13 years.
The monument’s design was called “Symbol of Indiana” and had been submitted to the state’s contest by Prussia-based architect Bruno Schmitz, a friend of monument commission secretary James Gookins. Schmitz was represented by deputy architect Frederick Bauman of Chicago, and a number of companies and individuals were contracted to construct the various aspects of the monument including its base, terraces, stonework, obelisk and sculpture work. Final installations for it were completed in 1901.
Reaching towards the sky is the central obelisk, made of oolitic limestone from quarries in Owen County, Indiana, with the figure of Victory crowning it. The monument measures over 284 feet high, only 15 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty in New York. The actual Victory statue is some 30 feet tall, weighs 10 tons, and includes symbolic features such as a torch representing the “light of civilization,” an eagle representing freedom and a sword symbolizing victory. The statue took on the nickname of Indiana or Miss Indiana.
Elevator service to the glassed-in observation deck near the top of the monument dates back to 1894, though some steps are required to complete the ascent.

the base of the obelisk, and limestone tablets above its entryway doors, headed by the inscription “To Indiana’s Silent Victors,” commemorate the contributions of Hoosier soldiers to conflicts including the American Revolutionary War, the capture of Vincennes from the British in 1779, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War and the Civil War, respectively.
Among the prominent sculptures surrounding the monument are “War and Peace,” “The Dying Soldier” and “The Return Home,” in addition to figures representing the artillery, cavalry, infantry and Navy at the monument’s base. Other sculptures include Revolutionary War hero George Rogers Clark, Indiana war hero and U.S. President William Henry Harrison, and James Whitcomb, Indiana governor during the Mexican-American War.
Electrical floodlights first enhanced the monument’s outdoor candelabra in 1928, and a tradition begun in 1962 dubbed “the world’s largest Christmas tree” involved the addition
each year of lights and garlands strung from atop the monument to create the illusion of a huge Christmas tree, visible for some distance from downtown Indianapolis.
Eleven years later, in 1973, the monument was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A museum focusing on the Civil War was added in the basement in 1918, though it has since been relocated to the Indiana World War Memorial museum and its attendant, five-block encompassing plaza, a site created after World War I located less than a mile from the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and worthy of an article of its own.
Of course the Soldiers and Sailors Monument is the centerpiece of the historic, brick-paved Monument Circle that forms the very heart of downtown Indianapolis and the city in general, and is part of a historic district including the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and a host of notable establishments and buildings.

The original, 19th century design blueprint for the
Lady Victory statue that crowns the monument.
Since Memorial Day and the monument are our central theme, it might be worth noting some Indiana statistics relating to the major conflicts of the 20th century, in addition to the Civil War numbers referenced above.
• World War I: more than 130,000 U.S. soldiers hailed from Indiana to serve in “the war to end all wars,” over 3,000 of which perished.
• World War II: around 338,000 Hoosier men served in World War II, with 13,370 paying the ultimate price during the war. About 118,000 Hoosier women also served in the military in various capacities (not to mention the significant wartime contributions in Indiana-based manufacturing centers).
• Korean War: Some 85,000 Hoosiers served in the Korean War, with 742 having lost their lives.
• Vietnam War: Of the 136,000 from
Indiana who served in Vietnam, 1,525 are listed as killed or missing in action.
Hundreds more Hoosiers have lost their lives in the conflicts since then, relating to the Global War on Terrorism.
So, if you’re attending that legendary Memorial Day event in Indiana’s capital city this year (or the next time you simply find yourself in its downtown), pay a visit to one of the most remarkable monuments in the state, and perhaps take a moment to appreciate the sacrifices of the Hoosiers who are among those whose sacrifices are commemorated each year on the last Monday of May.
Jeff Kenney is museum and archives manager for Culver Academies and one of the directors of the Historical Society of Culver.

Throughout four generations, the business that bears the name of the John T. Camden family has developed into a premier resource for foundation installation and repair, as well as bridge repair, with a special emphasis on historic landmarks.
Just over 75 years ago, back in 1948, John T. Camden was perfecting his skills in excavation work, and was soon joined by his son, John B., after fulfilling his service in the Army. The father-son partnership flourished successfully in fairly short order, and by 1963 the pair had completed work on a new bridge. John B.’s wife, Mary Beth, brought forth her commitment to the operation, and the enterprise continued to thrive.
Bernadene Camden Boggs, the daughter of John B. and Mary Beth, joined her parents in the business in 1988, and currently serves as the company president, articulating the daily practices of Camden Foundation Technologies since 2009. Drawing from a wellspring of inspiration from his ancestors, the latest generation of management is Phillip Camden, who has earned an engineering degree and is now commemorating his 20th anniversary with the family business.
This legacy of excellence is encompassed by the team’s expertise in structural foundation installation and repair work. They are also renowned for their dedication to restoring classic historical

ironwork and steel bridges.
One of the methods used to establish solid and supportive foundations for new construction is called the Magnum helical foundation system. This technique differs from more conventional pile-driven foundations in that the piles are inserted into the ground through the use of a torque motor, while also featuring exclusive round shaft piers. This helps to provide more lateral strength and vertical stability for the piers. For a more traditional approach, driven piles can also be composed of wood, steel-shell, and H-pile installation as well.
When businesses or residences succumb to the phenomenon of settling and shifting, Camden can assist with leveling the structures through the use of their steel push piering system. By utilizing a series of hydraulic rams, three-foot sections of optimum-strength steel tubing are installed into the ground to reinforce the loadbearing weight, and to allow stabilization

The commitment to perfection and quality has never wavered over the years, as Phillip Camden notes, for in this particular line of business, being a repeat customer isn’t always what they strive for. “We have a good reputation in the work that we do,” Camden says. “We don’t want to have to come back. We want to do it once and be done.”
Among some of their noteworthy corporate customers include Biomet, the Warsaw Parks and Recreation Department, and Culver Academies. They have also been established at countless homes that border many of Kosciusko County’s 100-plus lakes. That sense of loyalty is keenly observed among their staff of eight employees, with two employees having stayed with the company for more than 25 years.

pedigree is the longtime mission they have participated in to restore Hoosier landmark bridges. These are projects that often take years to execute and complete, as they work closely with engineers and other historical advisors to ensure that whenever they are able, they can replicate the original look, even in instances when the hardware and other materials are slightly variant. It’s a very laborious but worthwhile process, according to Bernadene Boggs.
“The point is to keep things as historically accurate as possible,” Boggs says. “We work for as long as it takes to preserve that historic integrity.”
Typically, one bridge renovation requires months of precision marking, disassembly, repairs and, ultimately, restoration. More often than not, even the smallest parts require painstaking replication. However, it’s a truly rewarding endeavor, each and every time.
One of their more recent undertakings involved a wood-covered, steel-framed bridge near Noblesville, Indiana. The vintage walkway dates back to 1868 and took years to finish.

Water safety in northern Indiana is of paramount importance due to the numerous lakes, rivers and other water bodies in the region. With the Great Lakes nearby and an abundance of smaller lakes and rivers, residents and visitors alike enjoy a variety of water-based activities. However, ensuring safety in and around water is essential to prevent accidents and tragedies.
One of the key aspects of water safety in northern Indiana is understanding the risks associated with different bodies of water. While the Great Lakes provide opportunities for swimming, boating and fishing, they can also be unpredictable and subject to sudden changes in weather and water conditions. Similarly, smaller lakes and rivers may have hidden hazards such as underwater obstacles, strong currents or uneven depths.
To mitigate these risks, it’s crucial for individuals to be aware of their surroundings and to exercise caution when engaging in water activities. This includes wearing appropriate safety gear such as life jackets when boating or participating in water sports, as well as knowing how to swim and understanding basic water rescue techniques.
Additionally, staying informed about weather conditions and water-quality advisories is essential for safe enjoyment of water activities. Sudden storms or changes in water temperature can

pose significant dangers, especially for those who are unprepared or inexperienced. Monitoring weather forecasts and heeding any warnings from local authorities can help prevent accidents and ensure a safer experience on the water.
In northern Indiana, water safety education plays a vital role in preventing accidents and promoting responsible behavior around water. Schools, community organizations and recreational facilities often offer programs and courses on water safety, teaching participants about the importance of supervision, proper swimming techniques and how to respond in emergencies. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources website is a great source for lake and boating safety information (in.gov/dnr/lawenforcement/education/boating-education-and-safety).
Parents and caregivers also play a crucial role in promoting water safety among children and young adults. Supervision is key, especially when young children are near water, and ensuring that children learn to swim at an early age can significantly reduce the risk of drowning. Many local schools, YMCAs, gyms and aquatic centers offer swim lessons for all ages. Call your local facilities for more information. Teaching children about water safety rules and boundaries, such as never swimming alone or diving into unknown waters, can help instill good habits and prevent accidents.

Boating safety is another important aspect of water safety in Northern Indiana, given the popularity of recreational boating on the region’s lakes and rivers. Boaters should familiarize themselves with local boating regulations and requirements, including licensing and registration, as well as safety equipment such as life jackets, fire extinguishers and navigation lights.
Boater education courses are available online, and it’s a good idea for all boat drivers to learn the rules of the water and fundamentals of boating (boat-ed.com/indiana).
Furthermore, boaters should be mindful of their speed and surroundings, especially in crowded or congested areas, and avoid alcohol consumption while operating a boat. Alcohol impairs judgment and reaction time, increasing the risk of accidents and endangering both passengers and other water users.
In addition to individual responsibility, community efforts to improve water safety infrastructure can help reduce accidents and improve emergency response capabilities. This may include installing warning signs and safety buoys in hazardous areas, improving water access points for emergency responders, and providing training for local lifeguards and rescue teams.
Water safety is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation

BRIDAL GIFT IDEAS, FROM FUN TO FUNCTIONAL
It is getting close to summer wedding season. I have seen more destination weddings and requests for fantastic honeymoons than ever before, and people are changing the way they shop for weddings as well. Many times, the groom and bride have been living in full households and have to combine them. I find that buying bigger items for entertaining and serving works out really well, as they will be having larger group gatherings.
I can’t believe all the new items couples search for - bridal swim suits, outfits for the dog to attend, and save-the date-cards. I still remember some of the gifts I received at my shower - an iron and ironing board, pillows for the bed, handmade pillow cases, doilies, Tupperware, an electric skillet and so much more. Wouldn’t it be fun to have an old-fashioned shower and watch the bride-to-be’s face at opening these gifts? That would lead to some fun pictures to share. I know things can’t stay the same - otherwise I wouldn’t have a TV or cell phone - but it sure brings a smile to my face to think about it.
Canning, sprouting and fermenting are making a comeback, and we are starting to get items in the store to help newbies to get started.
Story & Photography Provided
My granddaughter is getting married this summer and that is bringing up old memories. I was trying to remember what I got my daughter for her wedding, and had to text her to find out. Turns out it was a Longaberger picnic basket, a KitchenAid mixer and a bunch of Tupperware.
My granddaughter is having an outdoor wedding and they are just about finished with the final planning stages. I don’t know yet what I am getting her, but am having fun thinking about it - maybe an iron and ironing board. It’s also new for me to see the husbands-to-be attending the showers.
Please go to our Facebook page @newkitchenstore and post your memories of what you gave to your daughter at her shower, or what your mom gave you at yours. With so much to choose from, try charcuterie boards, as they are popular and make wonderful gifts. Even if you aren’t familiar with the interior style of the recipient’s house, you can buy wood or slate and it will fit right in. A gift certificate to your favorite cheese house might get you an invitation to eat cheese, or at least give them a day trip.
We offer a bridal registry at the store. Appointments are recommended so we can give you some helpful tips when setting up the registry, and tell you about the perks of signing up. The registry isn’t just for brides, and we have both online and in-store registries.

Working at a job you love and are passionate about doesn’t feel like work. Just ask Ehren Stuff, co-owner of Harry Stuff Brewing Company.
Stuff says it’s been that way since his father, Edward, opened the business in May 2019 on their family farm.

Mrs. Stuff with Son Co- Owner Ehren Stuff.
“My wife, Luisa, and I own the brewery,” Stuff says. “The history of the business is similar to many people during the Great Recession. My dad and I started to home brew in my mom’s kitchen, and over time we became increasingly passionate about brewing. Later we attended classes on brewing and how to open a brewery, and after years of dreaming and planning, we opened on my parent’s farm on U.S. Highway 6 in Wawaka.”
All the beer at Harry Stuff Brewing is made with natural ingredients.
“I have decided to keep our beers with natural ingredients because, as a consumer, when I buy products at the grocery store I want to know what is in my food,” Stuff says. “I also want to eat what is real and healthy. Besides, I still think the best-tasting food or drinks in the world are those developed through evolution or God, whatever you believe - not in a laboratory.”
Ehren believes in the best ingredients.
“How can one compete with the slow development of time or the perfection of God’s touch?” he asks. “Maybe someday. However, pulling a fresh raspberry off the plant on a warm summer day under the sun will always taste better than an artificial raspberry. I figured a long time ago, if what I love to eat and what I look for in a grocery store is fresh and real, why shouldn’t our beers be the same?”

Harry Stuff Brewing has several specialty beers.
“My three great passions in terms of beer are, yes, one, IPAs,” Stuff says. “I know they are overdone, but I never tire at looking at alpine mountains either. Two, I love lagers, the beer of modernity. They are the gravitational pull of the industry, a boring pilsner or dunkel to some, but the foundation on which all great beers, regardless of style, are constructed, and unite/invite the masses. Finally, third, mixed fermented ales - the original brew, the combination of wild yeast and souring bacteria.”
Harry Stuff Brewing has several popular beers. “Our most popular beers are definitely Hazy IPAs and Wawaka Pils, our German Pilsner,” Stuff says.
Stuff has his pwn personal favorite beers. “My favorite beer in the world is Cantillon’s Gueuze, a beer I only could dream of making,” he says. “It’s a beer that spontaneously ferments by wild microorganisms from the delicious air of Belgium in oak barrels, to become blended with various years of one-, two- and three-yearold brews. It’s not for everyone, but when done right it’s the most complex and beautiful drink in the world.”
Harry Stuff Brewing also has popular food items.

“We are definitely known for pizza and empanadas,” Stuff says. “As time has gone on, we have started to become known for our weekly specials. They change from week to week and are inspired by South American and European dishes. People follow us on social media just to see what dish Chef Luisa will create next.”
Stuff has some go-to menu items he chooses often.
“It’s hard to pick favorites,” he says. “I know it’s a politician’s answer, but we really try to showcase what we enjoy, and try not to do what is necessarily popular, but what we enjoy from our trips and passions. When we make European goulash or our Peruvian soup, it’s because we are attempting to share a moment in time of enjoyment when we found an out-of-the-way cafe in a European capital and shared a candlelit night among new friends, or were trekking through the Andes and sat down in a crowded street market and were introduced to happiness in a bowl.”
Stuff believes you have to be continuously passionate about what you do.
“Too many breweries open to make money, or other breweries make styles they don’t enjoy because it sells,” he says. “Don’t chase the hype. Follow your own weird path and become the hype.”

The Starke County Historical Society is an organization dedicated to preserving the heritage of the county, along with the safeguarding of artifacts from a previous time, for generations of the future.
In June of 1974, members of the community got together to discuss ways of preserving the history of Starke County. This meeting resulted in the founding of the Starke County Historical Society, with Bruce Van Gilder as its first president. Since then, the society has been a welcome presence within the community.
Society volunteers were involved in parades and local festivals, and set up exhibits temporarily in a storefront on Main Street in downtown Knox. It has been said that the first museum was in the trunk of somebody’s car, and as donated items started to accumulate,
the need for a building to house them became apparent. In 1976 the home of former Governor Henry F. Schricker was purchased and acted as the first museum. However, in order to bring the Schricker house up to standards, it was closed in 2016. The Starke County History Center, located on U.S. Highway 35, was first opened to the public in November of 2018 and now houses the museum pieces.
The society has been instrumental in the preservation of events, locations and historical relics throughout the county. One such historical landmark resides at the entrance to Wythogan Park. Known as Historic Bridge #39, the bridge is an excellent example of the Warren truss type of construction used in the early 1900s for both railroads and highways. Originally built in 1915 by the Rochester Bridge Company, the society acquired the bridge in 1992 when it was moved to its present location and

One doesn’t have to look far to see a prime example of 11th- and 12thcentury architecture in Knox. Located in the center of town, the third Starke County Courthouse has withstood the test of time. Designed by an architectural firm from Fort Wayne, the courthouse was built in 1897 using Indiana limestone. In 1997, to honor the 100th anniversary of the courthouse, the society was involved in a celebration that included tours of this remarkable structure.
In 1679, French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle traveled the Kankakee and St. Joseph rivers in search of trade and land for France. During the travels, encampments were made along the Kankakee in Starke County. One such encampment was located at what
is known as Davis Station in northwest Starke County. To retain the memory of La Salle’s explorations through Starke County, the society, along with the Indiana Historical Bureau, erected a historical marker in 2000. Grace Burch, a local resident born at Davis Station in 1903, had the honor of unveiling the marker.
In 1865, with the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and a nation desperate to heal after a great Civil War, it was decided that Lincoln’s funeral train would travel from Washington, D.C., throughout the country to allow citizens a chance to mourn their fallen leader. The train passed through many towns in Indiana before its final stop in Springfield, Illinois. One of those towns is San Pierre, located at the southwestern tip of Starke County. In 2017 the society held a ceremony in Tierney Park in San Pierre to unveil a marker commemorating the passing of

These are just a few of the projects and events that society members and volunteers have been involved with. Members and volunteers are also the curators and historians of the Starke County History Center, which now acts as the museum for all the artifacts pertaining to Starke County. Without the dedication and continuous efforts of the Starke County Historical Society, many places, events and items would probably be forgotten or lost. Memories that are passed down would probably fade. Keepsakes and family treasures would be lost. Places of value would be erased. History is a valued treasure that must be preserved.
In honor of the society’s 50th anniversary, a celebration will be held on June 21. To purchase tickets for the golden jubilee, or for membership and volunteer info, reach out to the Starke County Historical Society at 574-7727242, or at schistorycenter@gmail.com.

Mother’s Day is a cherished occasion dedicated to honoring the women who play an integral role in shaping our lives with their love, guidance and unwavering support. This special day, celebrated in various forms across the globe, provides an opportunity to express our gratitude and appreciation for the selfless sacrifices mothers make every day.
Originating in ancient times, Mother’s Day has evolved over centuries into the widely observed holiday we know today. Its roots can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans who held festivals to honor maternal goddesses such as Rhea and Cybele. In Christian tradition, Mothering Sunday emerged as a day to visit the “mother church” and reunite with family. Over time these customs merged, laying the foundation for the modern celebration of Mother’s Day.

writer Anna Jarvis in the early 20th century. Inspired by her own mother’s dedication to social causes and community service, Jarvis envisioned a day to honor the sacrifices mothers make for their children. Her tireless efforts to establish Mother’s Day as a recognized holiday eventually led to its official proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914.
Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated worldwide with a variety of traditions and customs. From lavish gifts and heartfelt cards to intimate family gatherings and acts of service, people express their love and appreciation for mothers in countless ways. Whether it’s a simple gesture or an elaborate tribute, the sentiment behind each expression is the same: profound gratitude for the immeasurable impact mothers have on our lives.
At its core, Mother’s Day serves as a poignant reminder of the unique bond between a mother and her child. It’s a time to reflect on the countless sacrifices mothers make, often putting their own needs aside to ensure the well-being and happiness of their children. From nurturing us in infancy to guiding us through the trials of adolescence and beyond, mothers provide unwavering love and support at every stage of our lives.
Beyond biological mothers, Mother’s Day also honors the countless women who assume maternal roles in our lives. Whether it’s a grandmother, aunt, stepmother or mentor, these maternal figures play a vital role in shaping our identities and nurturing our spirits. Their love knows no bounds, and on Mother’s Day we have the opportunity to celebrate the diverse array of women who enrich our lives with their presence and guidance.
In addition to celebrating the mothers in our lives, Mother’s Day also serves as a time for self-reflection and introspection. It’s a chance to acknowledge the sacrifices our mothers have made and to consider how we can repay their love and kindness. Whether it’s through acts of service, heartfelt expressions of gratitude or simply spending quality time together, Mother’s Day prompts us to reflect on the importance

of nurturing and cherishing our relationships with the women who have shaped us into who we are today.
Furthermore, Mother’s Day offers an opportunity to advocate for issues that impact mothers and families around the world. From maternal health and child care to gender equality and work-life balance, Mother’s Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by mothers everywhere. By raising awareness and supporting initiatives that address these challenges, we can work towards creating a world where every mother is valued, supported and empowered to thrive.
