BREMEN COMMUNITY CARES LOCAL NONPROFIT SEEKS TO IMPROVE LIFE FOR RESIDENTS AND VISITORS ALIKE Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided

Good things can happen when people work together. Bremen Community Cares is one of those good things. What six local women started in 2016 to help beautify the downtown streets has grown into an economic development tool for the community, says Bremen Community Cares President Matt VanSoest. He graduated from Bremen High School in 2004. It is, he says, “exciting to come back to the area and lead this initiative.” VanSoest is one of about 20 volunteers who tackle a variety of projects that benefit the Bremen community. Those projects can be decorating for the holidays or the seasons of the year, planning events, or taking on rehabilitation projects that provide a benefit to the town.

uses such as advertising events, providing seasonal displays or simply adding some welcoming green space to replace an abandoned gas station.

One of the beautification projects completed in 2021 is a corner space at the intersection of State Road 106 and State Road 331. This space has a multitude of

Seeing an active downtown that is healthy and vibrant sends an important message to a potential new resident or new business. Bremen’s selection by the Indiana Office

of Community and Rural Affairs as one of the designated Indiana Main Street towns in 2016 encouraged the establishment of Bremen Community Cares. It is possible, VanSoest says, to expand on the quality of life that Bremen already offers, and improve on amenities for current and future residents.

The Indiana Main Street program focuses on the revitalization and preservation of historic downtown areas. Being named as an Indiana Main Street town is seen as a way of boosting the economy. Beautification is one pillar of the Main Street designation. Another is community involvement and public policy regarding events, how people utilize the town center, as well as improvements and initiatives. “The thought process of Bremen Community Cares is to continue to give back to downtown, to attract people to live, work and play in Bremen,” VanSoest says. Even something as typically rural as a farmers market can add to the attraction. Bremen Community Cares offers this to the community from May through September. The creation of the Bremen Community and Performing Arts Center is an ongoing continuing project, VanSoest says. It came about through the rehabilitation of the

150-year-old St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. It has space for artists and a space for health and wellness classes like yoga, tumbling, dance and aerobics. It has an event space too, and the performing arts component was utilized for concerts during the recent holiday season. Residents of all ages will be able to use the space. One of the challenges of living in a small town is the lack of entertainment and destination options, VanSoest says. The community center is a step forward in creating a town that is energized, and a place people want to live and stay. Bremen Community Cares is a nonprofit, grass-roots volunteer organization. There are no fancy offices or paid salaries, but there is a strong network of willing volunteers and support from the community. It depends on volunteers, local businesses, partnering organizations, donors and sponsors.

The organization’s social media page advertises community events such as the performance of the community’s children’s choir and holiday events, and it also promotes local businesses and organizations. This inclusivity is also reflected in the volunteers who can range from 3 years of age to senior citizens. They lend their time and efforts for an hour or so, or possibly longer, VanSoest explains. Bremen’s town motto is “A Good Town,” and Bremen Community Cares is one

example of why that motto is true. VanSoest says the town he grew up in has a lot to offer, especially considering its location in the region. Efforts like those undertaken by Bremen Community Cares open this “good town” to a future of potential. “We are on the doorstep of opportunities within a simple hour’s drive,” VanSoest says. QUALITY FOR LESS SAVINGS IS A STAPLE AT FORNELLI’S DISCOUNT Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Tony Straw

When Dennis Fornelli and his wife Ashlee opened up Fornelli’s Discount in August of 2021, in many respects it was the next logical step to expand the closeout and overstock wholesale business he already had. “My parents had a store so I bought and sold for them,” he explains. “I’ve been buying and selling on and off for the last 20 years.”

1/4 PAGE AD

Fornelli has always dealt in bulk wholesale inventory, a system that works well for small-business owners and those who supply inventory. When he looks for products, he tries to find a store that is going out of business or a factory that quit producing a line of products - all of whom would typically rather sell their entire

inventory to one person rather than ship to a dozen buyers. On the flip side, smaller businesses and flea-market vendors can’t always buy in large bulk, whether because of a lack of storage space or funds. As the middle man, Fornelli can provide a win-win for all involved.

After helping others with supply and demand, it was only natural that the Fornellis would eventually open their own shop. When the location in Toto, an unincorporated community near North Judson, came up for sale, the Fornellis decided to go for it. One thing that sets Fornelli’s Discount apart is that they only sell name-brand products. They sell clothing, some of which comes from brands as well-known as Nike, patriotic items, bedding, sports memorabilia, toys, as well as home and garden decor.

His passion for people shines through. Each customer is greeted upon walking through the door and the employees know regular customers by name. “We like to know our people,” Fornelli says. “We want to make it a friendly environment, not like a big-box store where you’re just another customer.” Fornelli is planning on adding another passion to his building - carnival food. His hope is to open a small in-house, firstresponder-themed eatery in March. “Our big focus is going to be wings and wood-fired pizza,” he says. “I’ve always liked carnival-style food, so we’re going to have corndogs and Chicago dogs - the kind of

things that are good to eat but not really good for you, but people love it.” Fornelli’s plans for the future don’t end there. He’s planning on purchasing more property in Toto to expand the store sometime in the near future. “In the five or six months we’ve been in business, we’ve already outgrown our space,” he says. “We’re at 5,500 square feet and looking to build a 50,000-square-foot building.”

Once there, he plans on expanding the inventory even more to include indoor and outdoor furniture, golf carts and a lot more. Fornelli’s Discount is located at 3115 South Range Road in North Judson. THE BEST IN PATIENT CARE PULASKI MEMORIAL HOSPITAL COMPLETES CLINIC EXPANSION

Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Jubilee Edgell

The expansion of the Winamac Clinic at Pulaski Memorial Hospital (PMH) is complete, and the doors are open to improved medical care and expanded access to health-care providers for the Winamac community.

“Since the PMH Medical and Surgical Group was founded, we have continuously been able to add world-class physicians and nurse practitioners to the group,” said former hospital CEO Tom Barry in a press release from PMH in 2020. “With that growth comes the need to expand.” The clinic has more than doubled in size,

going from 10,240 square feet to 26,355. Barry says the expansion is the largest building project PMH has undertaken since the hospital opened in 1963. According to PMH officials, the Medical and Surgical Group has grown from one full-time physician, two part-time

physicians and three nurse practitioners, to 23 providers, with patients at five clinic locations including Winamac, Francesville, Monterey, North Judson and Knox. Providers work in the medical specialties of family medicine, prenatal, pediatrics,

general surgery and orthopedics. Barry says the hospital team needed more space to see patients, with two new doctors starting in the summer of 2022. The new providers joining the clinic this summer

are Dr. Mike Keller, MD, a family medicine physician, and Dr. Jennifer Biesiadecki, DO, a family medicine and women’s health physician. These aren’t the only changes at the clinic.

A central registration area makes it more convenient for patients to check in, and also makes the registration process more efficient. Sound dampening is installed to protect patient privacy, and providers are located by specialty to facilitate the collaboration process. There are also modifications to better control potentially infectious viruses - a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The facility features a negative air pressure room for each provider suite that restricts air flow into the rest of the clinic by venting air outside. Phase 2 includes the demolition of older exam rooms and the new construction of a decontamination unit that can also serve as a COVID-19 testing location. This construction phase also includes two new meeting rooms for hospital staff. PMH has been part of the Winamac and Pulaski County community since 1963. The Medical and Surgical Group was formed in 2013, with the original clinic opening on September 1 of that year. The expansion project began three years ago, with groundbreaking in November of 2020 and the first phase completed and open to the public on January 3. Phase 2 is already underway and is expected to be completed this spring. In addition to

MORE THAN A SIMPLE APRON Writer / Abby Renz Photography Provided

What is the very first thing that comes to your mind when you think of an apron? There are all types of aprons for varying activities: Blacksmith’s aprons made of heavy leather and hide, a simple apron for a waitress wore around the waist, or even a punny ‘Kiss the Cook’ apron for the grinning father manning the grill at the family barbecue. But what about a kitchen apron?

for the perfect mother/daughter gift. All can usually recall memories of a grandmother, mother, and father wearing different aprons, and can find what works for them and their kitchen needs. But, is it truly just a “simple apron”?

I shared a photo of myself after cooking a delicious Christmas feast, face flushed from cooking and feeling victorious in my sunshine-yellow Heirloom apron by Danica. My brother responded to the photo in the text, “You look like a Betty-Homemaker!” Of course, I know he was teasing me, as Some may recall the image of a brothers do, but it made me question the grandmother in her kitchen with flour stigma and feelings towards the simple dusted on her cheeks, a twinkle in her eye, and wiping her hands on her favorite flower- kitchen apron. sunshine and warmth of the heart of our home: the Kitchen. I think of the many meals that I have made with my hands, the dishes I’ve lovingly cleaned and how many gatherings I’ve hosted wearing my apron. To me it’s more than a practical way to shield my clothing from splatters and spills. It’s more than extra pockets. It’s a badge, it is a designated uniform. It proclaims to my household that I am at ease in my kitchen, where it is my kitchen and my rules. They

know that any and every meal made was prepared with love and maybe a little imagination. I know that this is the same apron that I will wear when I become a mother, and prepare lunches and meals for my future children. This is the apron that my daughters will want to borrow to make their father a birthday cake, or my son’s to wash dishes and wear as a cape. This is an apron that I will wear when I too bake cookies for my grandchildren.

SLICE OF GOODNESS AMISH KUNTRY FRIED PIE BAKES UP FRESH TREATS Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Marlin Miller, co-owner of Amish Kuntry Fried Pie in Millersburg, says he is glad he took over the popular business in 2014. “My wife Anna and I bought the business from John Mullet, who did a great job,” Miller says. “We wanted to make sure we kept up the high quality of the pies to keep our customers happy, and we did. We still aren’t sure where John came up with his name for the business, but it works.” The Millers succeeded in their business goal of increasing sales, and have attracted new customers in the process. “John Mullet moved to Wisconsin and started a pretzel business,” Miller says. “We were able to take his successful business and build on it to keep it moving forward in the right direction. We make sure every pie is fresh, delicious and very flavorful. We also sell the same 13 flavors, and people know what they are getting.” The 13 flavors include seedless black raspberry, apple, peach, cherry, strawberry,

RAISE THE DOUGH LOCAL NONPROFIT SUPPORTS COUPLES SEEKING ADOPTION Writer / Angela Cornell Photography Provided

nfertility is a painful reality that few understand unless they have dealt with it or know someone who has. For those who have been there, it’s a day-by-day, sometimes moment-by-moment battle. That was something Tobe Forshtay, founder of Raise the Dough, learned when he walked through it with some friends who struggled to have children.

Forshtay says. “It was really sweet.”

Before the idea of Raise the Dough was conceived, Forshtay and his wife Jaclyn were leading a small church-based group with six young married couples in their home. Their time together consisted of growing together in friendship as they centered on the word of God and prayer for each other.

It didn’t take long for children to come along. Then one of the couples, Kelly Morrow and his wife Heidi, discovered they couldn’t have children.

“That became the cadence of our time,”

As time went on, eventually couples began making prayer requests about growing their families. At first Forshtay had trouble taking those prayer requests seriously. “To me those were ‘softball’ prayer requests,” he says.

“It wrenched our hearts,” Forshtay says. “That was one of the most spiritually refining moments of my young adult life.”

From that moment on, Forshtay started pursuing funding options. Around that time, he discovered what he refers to as the most under-celebrated holiday in the world - National Doughnut Day. For Forshtay, a self-proclaimed doughnut aficionado who has visited doughnut shops across the nation, this was a wonderful way to unite his love of fried pastries with his love of hanging out with friends and family.

After eight years of trying and failing, Forshtay broached the subject of adoption with them. Although they were open to the idea, the venture was too expensive for them “I started making doughnuts on National to pursue. Doughnut Day and giving them away with hot coffee every first Friday in June since “That didn’t sit well with me,” Forshtay 2009,” he says. “We were just throwing a says. “As a man of faith, for 25 years I’ve party.” been reading, praying and focusing on understanding the heart of God,” he says. “I It was only a matter of time before Forshtay thought, ‘If money is the only thing keeping connected his doughnut tradition with his you from a growing family, shame on us.’” passion for helping his friends.

“It was like a light went off,” he says. “I realized we have a party and we have people coming. What if we used this doughnutinfused holiday as a fundraiser for Kelly and Heidi?” Two months before National Doughnut Day in 2014, he approached them about sponsoring their adoption. “Heidi looked up at me with the biggest tears in her eyes and she said, ‘Tobe, last night we were praying through this and

we just didn’t know what to do, so we said, Lord, if you’re going to provide for us, will you show us the pathway you’re designing to help us adopt?’” Forshtay says. That National Doughnut Day was one of the best ones yet for Forshtay and his group of friends, family and business associates

who came together to help with the event. Throughout that summer, they hosted a few other events and raised around $10,000. Through those efforts, Kelly and Heidi were able to adopt their son in October of 2015. After that, Forshtay felt a burden to help more families. The next year they repeated

the fundraiser for another family. In 2015 they started a 501(c)(3) organization, Raise the Dough, Inc. Since then they have helped 45 couples across the country and are currently committed to supporting five others, with many more on a waiting list. Thanks to how much Raise the Dough

ARTISTIC VISION

THE TRUE ART COMPANY INSPIRES ONE MURAL AT A TIME Writer / Angela Cornell Photography Provided

It doesn’t take turning on the news to see that the world has real challenges. The evidence is all around us. It’s on social media, in texts from family and friends, and in the communities that we hold near and dear. For Brandon Eads, this became part of his inspiration for founding The TRUE Art Company. “I wanted to create a nonprofit that was engaged at focusing on multiple destructive points in society,” he explains. “I was inspired through my children and really just

trying to help others.”

The team works to fulfill their mission in several ways. One of the primary ways is by Eads, a Kosciusko County native, moved their Mural Consciousness program. Small back to Warsaw from California in January businesses will pay Eads to put a sprayof 2021 and established The TRUE Art painted mural on the side of their building. Company as a way to benefit his community However, every year, Eads gifts four free permanent murals to long-standing area by bringing it together through beauty and small businesses. Sometimes, as with the creativity. “Mail Pouch” mural in Rochester, the design already exists and just needs a fresh coat of “It stands for Transform, Revitalize, Uplift paint. Eads creates others from scratch, like and Empower,” he says. “We’re trying to the rose-themed mural on the Home Sweet change the definition of art from a picture on the wall to a look in the mirror. We really Home building in Warsaw. with the client’s wishes. “We do the research on the event - what kind of event it is,” Eads says. “I go to the owner and say, ‘What do you want to see in the mural?’ To a lot of them I’ll say, ‘Give me a list of five things you like, three colors and a message you want it to convey.’” Depending on the client’s wishes, he may paint the wall himself while onlookers watch. “It’s a really cool thing for people to be able to sit and watch you paint, to watch something come together from nothing,” he says. Another way that Eads shares his work is through Community Connections events. Local outdoor event planners hire him to bring a portable, 32’x13’ mural to events, whether it’s a private birthday party or a public event like Warsaw’s First Fridays. When Eads is hired, he tries to coordinate

The other option involves setting up a portable wall as a hands-on mega activity for anyone passing by. At these events, Eads outlines the design on the wall so that it resembles a coloring page. After that, he separates the wall into a grid so participants can only draw one square.

Children especially enjoy this option, even the reserved ones. “It’s an amazing thing to watch a kid step out of their comfort zone to try something new,” Eads says. “That’s like with the process of

Either way, the point is that people of all ages can enjoy the creative process together. “It’s nice to bring this medium of spray paint to generations that don’t know about art “The process is what we’re wanting to give with spray paint, other than what they see people,” Eads explains. “It’s not really the on the side of a train car,” he explains. “It’s a end product, it’s the process. That’s what fun thing for me, and it’s an amazing thing we want to show society. That’s the most to see people’s responses and what they feel important part. SHOP SMART NEW STORE IN KNOX PROVIDES NATURAL AND ETHICALLY MADE PRODUCTS Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided

A new store in Knox promises a shopping experience you won’t find at big-box stores, offering a welcome environment, personal service and a socially conscientious product line. Mackenna Cavender opened her store, H & H Collection, in November, stocking the 800-square-foot shop with a variety of personal-care products. It is named after Cavender’s two daughters, 4-year-old Harper and 1-year-old Harlow. “They inspire every decision I make and my oldest loves to hear that the shop is named after her,” she says. H & H Collection is a women’s and children’s store, with care items associated with pregnancy, postpartum needs, and needs for babies, as Cavender describes it. “We specialize in natural pregnancy care

items, postpartum care and natural baby care items,” Cavender says. “I focus a lot on natural health care for mothers and babies. I love herbal remedies and have used them for years with better outcomes than any pharmaceutical or store-bought care items.” Her product line includes natural and ecofriendly clothing and home supplies such as dryer balls, bamboo hair brushes and allnatural loofahs. “I love to spread knowledge about natural health care and eco-friendly options,”

Cavender says. “There’s always room for growth and I’m glad I am a part of that process for most people.” The shop is designed to appeal to what Cavender says are “conscientious consumers,” and is designed to reflect Cavender’s own social consciousness. “I hope one day conscientious businesses will be the normal, to create a more sustainable business world,” she says. The store’s aesthetic is equally important.

She wants the atmosphere to be welcoming, and a reflection of her philosophy and the products she sells. “I love the boho, natural feel,” she says. Beige, pink and gold, with a touch of natural greens, are the main colors. Music is always playing, creating a warm vibe for the customers who come to shop. This vibe encourages the customers to engage with Cavender, giving her the opportunity to get to know them on a personal basis. Cavender attended Knox schools, lives here, has family in the area and operates two businesses here. “I went to Knox schools and from there I grew a connection with this small town,” she says. “All my closest friends and family live here so that brings that close connection.” As someone who has experienced smalltown life in rural Indiana, Cavender says she saw a need for more shopping opportunities for the community. “The shopping market in Starke County is very slim,” she says. “To shop for anything besides groceries we have to drive 40-plus minutes to the closest mall. I want to not only grow a community I’ve lived in for years, but also the one my children will grow up in.” The store is just one of the recent changes going on in the town she calls home.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS CREATES POSITIVE MENTORING RELATIONSHIPS Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Kari Lipscomb

Shelby believes the program has helped to give kids positive role models.

Shelby and Wes Kowal with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Elkhart County (BBBS) have thoroughly enjoyed the program, and encourage others to get involved. “The program is located in Goshen, Indiana, south of Dunlap,” Wes says. “The office is right next door to one of our amazing donors, DJ Construction.”

“I am the community manager with BBBS, and I am a Big Sister,” Shelby says. “Wes is the CEO of Next Level Pixels and is a Big Brother. Being a Big means you are a caring adult who is a consistent, positive role model to a child or children in our community. We are the first in this agency to have two little [brothers] instead of just one. The boys are identical twins and turned

9 in August.” BBBS has been serving Elkhart kids for more than 50 years. “Their mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of our youth,” Wes says. “One-to-one mentoring creates opportunities and experiences that build confidence and help our youth succeed in life.” The program doesn’t require a special occasion or expensive activities. It involves a few hours per month to share the simple things in life that the mentors already enjoy doing. It can also be an activity the kids like. Shelby says the program is one of a kind. “We have been matched with the boys for a little over a year now, and throughout our time together we’ve seen them go from shy, reluctant kids to being full of life, confident IS YOUR HOME OR BARN WELL INSULATED? and willing to try new experiences,” Shelby says. “As the mentors, it has been a very rewarding experience for us. Whenever we get together, we get to be kids again too, and laugh and be silly. They have taught us how to be in the moment, and enjoy our time together. The boys have become a part of our family. We do holidays and birthdays together, and just call each other to check in. We love our time we get to spend with them.” Local residents have made the program a

success. “We live in a tight-knit community who cares deeply for our youth, and want to see each and every one of our kids succeed,” Shelby says. “Our community loves our organization, and continues to support us every day. We are very grateful to be surrounded and supported by such a wonderful community.” A lot of time and effort is put into matching kids with the right mentors.

“Personally, we really like that this program focuses on quality matches,” Shelby says. “The boys and us have a lot in common, which makes it fun to hang out. We also love that we are making a difference in the boys’ lives, and getting to watch them be kids and grow up feeling safe, loved and confident that they can do whatever they set their minds on. We love being able to experience life together. We took them to their very first Notre Dame football game and it was such a blast, not only because Notre Dame won, but because the kids’ smiles and laughs are contagious. We all had such a wonderful day together and we didn’t want it to end.” Shelby believes being a mentor has truly changed her life. “The boys are so special to us, and it does not take a lot of time to make a difference in a child’s life,” Shelby says. “If anyone is interested in learning more about our program or how to get involved, please go to

More than ever before, computers are the way of the future, which is why computerbased career and technical education classes exist to help students learn about the different job possibilities available to them after graduation. Angela Kramer, a math and computer sciences teacher at John Glenn High School, teaches three classes that have become popular among students since they were first offered five years ago. “I’ve had kids who didn’t even think they were interested in computer science or anything to do with computers, and it just opened their eyes to what’s actually out there as far as professions and careers they can go into,” Kramer says. “It’s a really neat opportunity for the kids to have at John Glenn.”

Science and covers computer essentials, including impacts computers have on society, innovation and more. “It’s just a vast amount of information with computer science,” Kramer explains. “We do a lot of MIT App Inventor. They make their own apps and I give them different situations where they have to make an app to fulfill that need. You just let them go and see what they can do. Some were very elaborate and some were basic, but they all fulfilled the requirements.” During this school year, for example, two of the apps that students were asked to build were a game app and an app geared towards emergency situations. The second class is AP Computer Science, which covers computer principles, taking the foundation laid in the intro class and adding a few more levels to the students’ understanding.

“We dive a little bit more into how computer science innovations have impacted society ethically, morally and so forth,” Kramer says. The third class is focused on cyber security. “This one is really cool,” Kramer says, excitement in her voice. “I really like this one.” Although the 2021-2022 school year is the first time this class has been offered, it has already been a wild success. “It is an eclectic curriculum,” Kramer says. “It really dives into all aspects of cyber security.” Although the first two classes can be taken as standalone classes, the cyber security course will require both computer science classes as prerequisites beginning in the next school year.

Kramer believes that part of the reason why these classes are so popular is that they aren’t required, core classes. “They choose to take this class,” she says. “They have an interest in it and that’s why they’re taking it. I think that’s an element, too, as to why it works so well.” Ultimately, Kramer sees this program as a masterful addition to the school’s

curriculum. “We have this opportunity at John Glenn,” she says. “John Glenn is really trying to expand on the kids’ opportunities and this is a great way of doing it.” John Glenn High School is located at 201 John Glenn Drive in Walkerton. Access to quality health care is an important asset for a community. Three new additions to the medical team at KnoxWinamac Community Health Center (KWCHC) means the community has additional options when it comes to their health and wellness. Two nurse practitioners, Renae Atkins and Roger Farris, are ready to meet patients at the clinic. A third medical professional, Beverly Kaunda, is a psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioner. She rounds out the three most recent hires for the health center.

Atkins is a longtime resident of Plymouth. A family nurse practitioner for 11 years, she has previous experience in critical care, trauma, emergency and surgery. In family practice, health professionals see patients of all ages. Atkins describes the range as being from infants to seniors. “Each age has a unique individual need and I enjoy providing thorough care based on their needs,” she says. A career in medicine appealed to Atkins because it mirrors her caring nature. She says she genuinely cares about others and wants to distinguish herself in her profession as a practitioner who is trustworthy and provides quality care. “This is not just a job for me, it’s a passion,” she says. “I love each one of my patients and because of this passion I am able to make a difference in the lives of others. I strive to be the best I can, which in turn will provide the best care to my patients.” Farris entered the medical field because he always had a desire to help people. He was also following in his mother’s footsteps. She is also a nurse.

The KWCHC mission as stated on the official website is “to provide quality, primary health-care services, accessible to persons in our community including the medically underinsured and uninsured.” It was founded by community leaders in 2006 and designated in 2010 as a federally qualified health center.

“I think the teamwork with everyone at the office inspires and encourages me,” he says. “We all work together to help people of this community be the best they can be.”
