“My dad started Papa’s in May of 1976 with the dream of creating a family atmosphere like the bar and restaurant (on the hit television series) ‘Cheers,’ only a decade before the ‘Cheers’ show existed,” Brian says. But before he started Papa’s, Jim McCormack’s background was in the record and printing business. Jim even later
designed an album cover for The Beatles.
While he was with Vee-Jay, Jim designed dozens of album covers, including the jacket for what was to be the Beatles first album cover. Brian says the original test lithograph still hangs over Papa’s bar.
“My dad also spent some time scouting out an unknown band in California,” Brian says. “They played this strange surfing style of music full of bizarre, three-part harmonies with high male voices.”
The Papa’s menu says, “Vee-Jay didn’t see much of a future in Rock & Roll ‘nonsense,’ especially those snotty British kids, John, Paul, George and Ringo.
Brian says that Jim urged Vee-Jay to sign them, but they vetoed on that deal too. That band was The Beach Boys. Vee-Jay later went out of business.

Brian says that his father, Jim, later went on to form his own graphics company, creating content for large companies in Chicago, including Blue Cross-Blue Shield, Harris Bank and many others.
The Beginning of Papa’s In the late 60s, Jim and his wife, Marion, with their four kids in tow, went in search of a lake getaway. “I remember touring Bass Lake and then finally Lake Maxinkuckee,” Brian says. “Jim was a bit of a spontaneous guy. We pulled up to a cabin for rent in the woods and stayed for the weekend, forgetting that we hadn’t brought a change of clothing, food or anything. They bought a cabin the next summer, and eventually moved to Culver fulltime in the mid-70s.”
FULL MENU DELIVERY
In 1976, Jim opened Papa’s with the help of his three sons and wife, with little to no experience in the food industry. It took a while, but Brian says “the results have proven to make Papa’s an institution in Culver.”

Brian says he later took a brief hiatus to further his music career before rejoining Papa’s in 2003.

In 1984, Papa’s added a screen porch dining area for summer seating, and then later added 30 inside seats in 1986, which proved to be a short-sighted build out, as they quickly grew out of the space. Papa’s added the area that is known as the bar room and family dining space. They also put in new bathrooms and a new entrance in 1989. Kitchen remodels and additions also took place.
A Family Business When Brian’s stepson, Jason Newman, graduated from Indiana University in 2003, he decided to get back into the
food business with his family. He has been with Papa’s ever since. In 2011, Brian’s other stepson, Matt Newman, and his wife, Catie, announced they wanted to return to Indiana from their home in Portland, Oregon. They joined the staff in September that year. Brian’s wife, Carla, now serves as his partner and acting CFO. Matt says he grew up in Papa’s and loves the restaurant. “I remember coming in here when I was five years old,” Matt says. “Our award-winning pizza is still my favorite. Eating our delicious pizzas has been a part of my entire life. We have been named Indiana’s best pizza, and it is what we are most famous for. It’s our lifeblood.” Matt also recommends the prime rib, fresh seafood and delicious hamburgers. There is also a wide selection of pastas, salads, entrees and more. “We get fresh seafood every week from a great supplier in Chicago, and we really sell a lot of burgers,” Matt adds. “Our grill business has exploded to an entirely different level. We have really grown in that area.” Matt runs the kitchen and has the freedom to come up with the specials. “My brother, Jason, executes the food specials, and our guests love the food he makes,” Matt says. “We also have fresh produce, and all of our food is locally sourced. We really pride ourselves on the high quality of our food. Everyone in the family is very passionate about what we do, and it is the bond of our family.” Papa’s is located at 824 North Lakeshore Drive in Culver. “Are you looking for a new adventure?” asks Brian Kunze, owner of Michiana Balloon Rides. “Typically, we don’t feel motion at all. Since we are moving with the wind, passengers feel weightless, as if they are standing on air.” Kunze speaks from years of experience. He was only five years old when a friend’s father bought a hot air balloon. Kunze and his own father became part of the ground crew — the team that chases and retrieves the balloon and its occupants. “My dad liked it so much, he bought his own,” Kunze says. “He found Dave Bobel in Rochester that taught us both to fly. Later, I bought my first balloon and started Michiana Balloon Rides.” Rides launch out of Centennial Park in Plymouth, Culver, and homes of those in Marshall County and are scheduled at sunrise or two hours before sunset. The “Share the Fun” option costs $225 per
person up to four people. A private ride accommodates up to four passengers and ranges from $649 for two people to $849 for four. Each experience takes around three hours and includes set-up, the flight and an ending toast ceremony where the history of flying is shared. Participants are encouraged to invite family and friends to send them off at the beginning of their adventure, or to be at the park when they return. Participants can also have their families follow along as part of the “chase” if they would like. “We monitor the weather very closely and fly only in the early morning or the end of the day because typically, that’s when the wind is the best for ballooning,” Kunze adds. “A highlight video is included in the price of the ride, but we also offer a video that includes every single thing from start to finish for an additional $49.”
“People often ask what they should wear on the balloon rides,” he says. “We tell them to dress for conditions on the ground. It gets three degrees colder for every thousand feet up in the air. We usually go up 2 to 3,000 feet and travel about four or five miles an hour, so it’s not that much of a difference than being on the ground. “This is definitely a ‘bucket list’ activity for a lot of people,” Kunze adds. “We have about five to 10 flights each year where someone gets engaged. It’s actually more fun for me to share the experience with people than riding solo. The wind might take us to Culver and over Lake Maxinkuckee, then we skim the tops of the corn fields and the surface of the lake. This is something not everyone gets the chance to do.” For information on flights and booking visit MichianaBalloonRides.com or give them a call at 574-780-4560. You can also visit them on Facebook at Michiana Balloon Rides LLC.
Michiana Balloon Rides will also rent out balloons for tethered rides at festivals, company picnics or parties. This is a more affordable way to ride in a hot air balloon taking four guests at a time up and back down in the balloon. Approximately 120 to 140 guests can ride in the balloon in two thelakesmagazine.com / MAY 2019 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / 13

9 SUMMER STYLE ESSENTIALS
Writer / Stephanie Weber
16 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / thelakesmagazine.com
Summertime is always something to look forward to. I remember growing up and having a countdown to the summer for a few reasons. Summer means the school year is coming to an end, and I always looked forward to summer break. Summer also means that dress season is oh so close. Even as a preschooler I looked forward to wearing dresses, some things never change. This month, I wanted to share my top nine wardrobe essentials as we approach those summer months. Each of these items are staples that make getting dressed in the heat a little easier. 1. JUMPSUITS
If you’re looking for a new style to try, jumpsuits are trendier than ever this year. Personally, I’ve always loved jumpsuits for the fact that they are a one-piece outfit, cutting your styling decisions in half. Jumpsuits (or
rompers) are easy styles to dress up for a night out or dress down for a casual Saturday running errands. 2. MAXI DRESSES
If you haven’t tried a maxi dress, where have you been? Before you think, “these don’t look good on me,” I’m here to tell you that maxi dresses are one of those pieces that look great on practically everyone. As with anything in your wardrobe, you just have to find the right fit for you. Being 5’1” I find that many maxis are just too long, but occasionally a local boutique will get a great piece that’s perfect for a more petite frame. Trust me on this, once you find one you feel confident in, you’ll never look back. 3. SANDALS
The older I get, the more I appreciate flat sandals that provide a cushion for my very flat feet. I’m known for buying the same style in three colors because when you find something you love, you might as well. 4. STRAW CROSSBODY
Not that straw bags are a new concept, but in the last couple of years we’ve seen these in stores nationwide for the summer season, styled every which way. I’d personally recommend one that is a crossbody because it’s likely not going to be your everyday purse but will act more as an accessory to complete a summer outfit. 5. WHITE LINEN BLAZER
I purchased my first white linen blazer last summer and I was surprised how often I found myself reaching for it. It’s a great summer essential for the office or to wear as a layering piece for brunch with friends. 6. STRIPED TOPS
You can’t go through summer without adding some variety of stripes to your wardrobe. If you follow my brand, you know that stripes are my go-to pattern. I think it’s fun to find these color

combinations that compliment your favorite white denim shorts in the best way possible. 7. HAIR SCARF
I don’t know about you, but most days in the summer, I just prefer to have my hair up and off my neck. The hair scarf trend is a personal favorite because they are an easy accessory that adds something extra to an otherwise simple ponytail. 8. DENIM SKIRT
If I’m not wearing a jumpsuit that might as well be loungewear or a dress that’s perfectly striped, you’ll probably catch me in a denim skirt. I avoid pants (except jumpsuits) if at all possible in the summer. Denim skirts are a wardrobe essential that can be styled easily with a striped button-up, a simple lace tank, a basic white tee, I mean the possibilities are endless. 9. ONE-PIECE SWIMSUITS
I, for one, am glad that one-piece suits are trending again. If I’m going to be by the water, I’m likely doing some kind of water activity like skiing or knee boarding so having a swimsuit that I don’t have to worry about losing half of is a major plus. I’ve learned to soak up summer fashion because we just don’t get to experience these warm months for all that long. If you’re ready to try something new or add a few staples to your wardrobe, I encourage to check out the local shops in your area. The boutique scene is plentiful offering something for you no matter what your personal style might be.

And his career is very far from over — in fact, he’s still in college.
Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography provided by Jayme Goetz & Salvador Perez Lopez
Many musicians would be more than satisfied having attained the kind of accolades and accomplishments Salvador Perez Lopez has already achieved. His career as a clarinetist includes performances on every track of “American Dreamers: Voices of Hope, Music of Freedom” — an album that garnered three Grammy awards in February, as well as appearances with a few prestigious Indiana orchestras and ensembles.
The Bremen High School grad developed an interest in learning an instrument back in the sixth grade, having grown up in what he describes as a musical household. “My dad is a guitarist and was always playing music in the house when I was growing up, and his dad was a professional mariachi player,” says Perez Lopez, who was born in Mexico and came to Indiana as a young child, subsequently attending
Bremen schools from kindergarten through twelfth grade. “So I guess all of that had an influence on me.” During his sixth grade year, Perez Lopez decided to join his school band and serendipity played a role at the beginning of his development as a clarinet player. “I wanted to do trumpet but there were too many trumpet players so the band director said to try the clarinet,” he recalls. “At first I hated it and wasn’t that good, but I practiced a lot and slowly fell in love with the

In the last year that I was teaching him, I was sending him to gigs that I couldn’t do.” “We might have broken the rules by all of us storming onto the stage, but it was worth it,” It was during his sophomore year at Perez Lopez says with a laugh. “When John IUSB that Perez Lopez set in motion the accepted the award for Best Improvised Jazz events that would lead to three wins at the Solo, he recognized me on stage and talked Grammy awards this year. He’d submitted about my story. I was really grateful for that. a story to the New York Times detailing his background as a federal DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipient and his passion for music. Several months after the story was published, he was contacted via Facebook by Kabir Sehgal, one of the producers for the “American Dreamers” album, and became the first of 53 individuals in the DACA program to be part of the project.
Soon Perez Lopez was off to Indiana University-South Bend, and his undergrad years brought many musical experiences that helped to further sharpen his craft including wind ensemble, chamber ensemble, jazz band and orchestra performances as well as a spot with the Elkhart County Symphony. “Salvador is the most consistently hardworking college student that I’ve actually ever had,” says Chris French, who served as Perez Lopez’s IUSB clarinet instructor. The two first met when French coached the South Bend Youth Symphony during Perez Lopez’s high school years.
“(Sehgal) said the album’s music director, John Daversa, and the producers wanted to raise some awareness about immigration and DACA by doing a jazz album,” Perez Lopez says. “They flew me down to Miami where the recording was going to be done in March 2018 and I played on every track. It was a great experience.”
“It’s typical for college musicians to get really inspired and go home to practice for three hours, and by the next week their instrument stays in the case until it’s time for the next lesson,” says French, who teaches clarinet and saxophone at IUSB, Goshen College, the University of Notre Dame and St. Mary’s College. “With Salvador, he wants to be a professional

We wanted the album to help raise awareness and to even be nominated I think helps with that.” Perez Lopez graduated from IUSB with a degree in music and clarinet performance last year, and as he currently pursues his master’s degree at the IU-Bloomington Jacobs School of Music, he already has several post-education plans to continue his musical journey. “My first year in Bloomington has been hard, and my private teacher is a stickler but he really knows how to train his students,” he says. “I feel like doing a master’s has been the right next step for me to go forward in my career. Owners Melanie & Sydney Taylor Writer / Julie Young Photographer / Tabitha Dillner
Melanie Taylor says she dreamed of becoming a cosmetology student during her high school career, but a career in the beauty industry was not in the cards for her at the time. Instead, she attended business school and became a legal secretary in 1985, but she couldn’t help thinking that she’d missed out on an opportunity. When her daughter Sydney expressed a similar dream at the age of 14, Melanie was quick to tell her about a cosmetology program available to high school students.
BEAUTY SCHOOL DREAMS
“She said if I was serious, we could look for educational opportunities like that when I was in my junior year of high school,” says Sydney, noting that she ultimately attended Knox Beauty College.

However, obtaining her cosmetology license was not enough. Sydney wanted to teach as well, and when she learned that an instructor’s license was also available, she quickly enrolled in those classes too. She graduated with both credentials under her belt and began a career that, in her mind, was the best of both worlds. As Sydney’s dream came to fruition, she thought it was time for Melanie to leave her law career behind and embrace her passion. Following in her daughter’s footsteps, Melanie enrolled at Knox and eventually obtained both licenses as well. After a two-year stint in Chicago, Sydney returned to Indiana and the pair opened The Color Shop in Valparaiso. They also began teaching part-time at Knox.
Custom crafted outdoor furniture and accessories
“Sydney has been my mentor throughout my journey as a cosmetologist,” Melanie says. “She has an unbelievable memory and spends a great deal of her personal time educating herself further. She’s my walking textbook. I tease and say I want to be like her when I grow up.”
High Quality Materials Satisfaction Guaranteed Affordable Prices
It was only a matter of time before the pair embarked on their next adventure. As 2018 ended, Knox Beauty College owners Loretta Rowe and Toni Palm made the decision to sell their school and luckily, the Taylors were in a position to purchase it. The mother-daughter duo remained committed to keeping the institution a functioning beauty college, and they provide a wide range of student-led services for an affordable price.

KNOX BEAUTY COLLEGE HAS BEEN PART OF THE KNOX COMMUNITY FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS, AND I WANTED TO CONTINUE ITS LEGACY. “Knox Beauty College has been part of the Knox community for more than 30 years, and I wanted to continue its legacy,” Sydney says. The two did implement some changes at the school, including building a social media platform to reach prospective students, adding a few services to the menu and upgrading their color line to Matrix. Other updates include cosmetic changes to the building with plans for more in the coming months and years. As for what it is like to work so close to a family member? Sydney says it’s a question she gets asked a lot. “She’s my business partner,” she says. “She’s super knowledgeable and I have total trust in her. I know she’s always got my back.” “Each of us brings something different to the table,” Melanie adds. “We are both very different in many ways and very much the same in others. We are in this together. We are a team and we are dedicated to building beautiful futures one stylist at a time.” Knox Beauty College is located at 320 E. Culver Road in Knox, Indiana. Spring and warm weather are on the horizon, and with them comes the rise of the tick presence in Indiana. From early spring through October, both humans and pets in Central Indiana are at an increased risk for bites from ticks carrying pathogens like Lyme disease – regardless of whether they live in an urban or rural area. Ahead of Lyme Disease Awareness Month in May, Indiana Lyme Connect – an Indianapolis-based support, education and outreach organization – offers the following phases for a comprehensive tick bite prevention plan that you can implement as soon as spring arrives. 1. A VOID TICK HABITATS & CREATE TICK-SAFE ENVIRONMENTS

You can treat your own clothing at home, mail it in to a treatment company or buy pre-treated clothing.
Before
Shady areas, moderate to tall grass and vegetation, leaf litter and woodpiles are all places where ticks can thrive. Stay in the middle of the hiking path whenever possible and avoid grass that is taller than your lawn.
AFTER
At home, try to create as many tick-free zones on your property as possible by: • Removing leaf litter. • Stacking woodpiles and position bird baths and feeders away from the recreational areas in your yard. • Landscaping with bushes and plants that do not attract deer. • Keeping playsets and other recreational areas away from tall grass, bushes and damp, shady areas. • Installing permethrin-treated tick tubes in flower beds, woodpiles or other places where mice tend to live on your property. The chemical is harmless to mice and will coat their fur – turning them into tiny tick killers. • Having your property perimeter, pathways and shady flowerbeds treated with insecticide sprays or granules. • Creating tick barriers between your lawn and wooded or unmown areas of your property using gravel or woodchips.

Apply skin repellent to the areas on your body that are not covered by treated clothing. There are several skin repellents on the market, with varying effective timeframes and active ingredients. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s usage directions and avoid products that combine repellent with sunscreen. 3. “ DE-TICK” AFTER COMING BACK INDOORS
There are three crucial steps for any “deticking” protocol.
dried on high heat for at least 6090 minutes.
First, as soon as you come inside, disrobe and tumble dry your clothes on high heat (without washing them) – 10 minutes (gas) or 15 minutes (electric). Studies have shown that dry heat kills ticks.
Muddy clothes should be washed in hot water (130°or higher). If you must wash the clothes in cold or warm water, be careful handling them between the washer and dryer, because ticks could survive those wash cycles. Then you can tumble dry them for 60 minutes (high heat) to 90 minutes (low heat) or until completely dry.
Damp or wet clothing should be tumble
The second “de-ticking” step is a full-body tick check. Do a thorough tick check, starting with your feet (especially between your toes) and moving upward (the typical travel pattern for most ticks). Carefully check your feet and ankles, behind the knees, inner thighs, pelvic area, waist, bellybutton (especially inside), back, underarms, in and around ears and your scalp (especially around the hairline). Finally, shower as soon as possible after coming back inside. Showering will help you shed any ticks still unattached, make your skin smoother so that hard ticks are easier to feel and wash off any remaining skin repellent. Creating a comprehensive prevention plan will help you enjoy the great outdoors with your family in the months when ticks are most active. For more information about all of the above prevention phases – as well as proper tick removal procedures, post-tick bite symptoms to watch for and a wealth of information and research regarding ticks and Lyme disease – go to indianalymeconnect.org. Be safe and have fun this spring, summer and fall! 30 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / thelakesmagazine.com

I hope something triggers a good memory or a good feeling that you take when you leave.” Originally from Michigan City, Kutch moved to Culver in 2006 with her husband, Jeff, and the youngest of their three children after Jeff accepted a job at the Culver Academies. Kutch opened MJ’s Sweet Tooth in August 2017 after selling candy bouquets on her own and at Sweet Treats in Plymouth before it closed in April 2017. She had been selling bouquets since 2014 and now continues to sell them in her shop along with candy from all over the world. MJ’s Sweet Tooth features traditional candies, many in flavors not found on the shelves at convenience stores: mango lime Fun Dip, lime and pineapple Nerds and strawberry Cow Tales are just some of the unique flavors to be found at MJ’s. She recently added more than 25 new salt water taffy flavors to her collection, too. Kutch also stocks her shop with options for adults: espresso and latte hard candy, wine gummies, mojito mints, margarita gum and tea-flavored candies. She carries DeBrand Fine Chocolates, a company based out of Warsaw, Ind., featuring their turtles, truffles, peanut butter cups and much more. 34 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / thelakesmagazine.com

So, aside from peace and quiet, here are a few ideas on ways to make her smile and remember this Mother’s Day. Writer / Abigail Hake . Photography Provided

The best gifts for new moms are things that save time and small comforts for sleepdeprived parents like super-soft mix and match pajamas you can find at Soma or a subscription to Shipt or Instacart! The best gifts for active mom are obviously activities! If your mom is a gal who likes to work out, then maybe buy her a few sessions to try out a new studio in your area. If they are someone who likes to be outdoors, think about gifting her a season pass to your state park. With a pass, they can explore some really great land throughout the state.
For the Artistic or Crafty Mom
If your mom is one who loves to get crafty and make things, why not sign her up for a local workshop? Find one for decorating florals, creating candles, or hand lettering. Pouring candles is also very fun and maybe more her style. If so, sign her up for a candle pouring workshop in your area.
For the Foodie Mom
Treat your mom to a nice Mother’s Day brunch and no dishes afterward. No one wants to do the dishes on Mother’s Day. No. One. So make reservations at her favorite, local restaurant. Enjoy each other’s company while enjoying some great eats too I don’t think many would say no to brunch. And if you can’t make brunch happen, then grab her a gift card to one of her favorite spots to eat around town.

For Any Mom
Maybe she wears jewelry but likes finer pieces. If that’s your mom, find a local jewelry craft store where the ladies there will be able to create something custom or help find you something perfect that’s readily available from their beautiful collection. If you think something a little simpler might work, pick up a monogram necklace. There’s also amazing silhouette necklaces on Etsy if you have time to order. Check out LEILAjewelryshop or GracefullyMadeStudio for unique and heartfelt necklaces. And if you aren’t able to figure anything out and all else fails, chocolate. Chocolates are quick and much loved. Pick out her favorites. Truffles, along with a handwritten card, and love are sure to please. As long as you make sure you give mom a day to relax and let her know how much you appreciate her and love her, you will win her heart over. Moms don’t hear these affirmations often enough, and usually, they are the icing on the cake to make for a perfect Mother’s Day — along with chocolate.

James ( Jim) DeWitt’s recollection of his life story — from his youth to his time serving in the military, to his years raising a family and running a business — is astoundingly detailed. His gentle demeanor, kind eyes and genuine smile immediately draws people in, but his story captivates anyone who has the privilege to hear it.
As a young boy of only four years old, DeWitt and his siblings were orphaned when their parents succumbed to tuberculosis. After eight years in an orphanage in Mexico, Ind., DeWitt was placed out on farms to work but ran away twice in search of something more. “I didn’t run away because I was angry,” he says. “I ran away because I was hurt. I was looking for someone to love me, and I never found it.”
Eventually, after going back to the orphanage, he asked farmers in the area if they needed help. “One of them gave me a job for $20 a month and my board and room, and that’s when my life changed,” he says. “I felt like somebody instead of something.” It was his move to this farm that would change the course of his life in ways he

couldn’t have imagined. DeWitt was 18 at the time, and the family he worked for was visited by some of their family from Florida, including a girl named Mary. “I never saw any smile so perfect,” DeWitt says of her. Mary’s family invited DeWitt to visit them in Florida. He hitchhiked from Indiana – a 2,000 mile round trip with only $8 in his pocket – to see the girl with the beautiful smile once again. But Mary was only 14, and DeWitt had enlisted in the navy and was awaiting his orders. He knew he would have to wait, but they would correspond by letters throughout his six years of service in the navy.

DeWitt joined the navy in 1939 and ended up on the USS Antares, a cargo ship stationed in Pearl Harbor. He quickly rose to captain’s yeoman due to his proficiency in shorthand. It was aboard the Antares that DeWitt would witness one of the most harrowing days in US history: December 7, 1941. Even years later, DeWitt can recall with acute detail that fateful day in our nation’s history. “I don’t think a lot of young people know about it,” he says of Pearl Harbor. “I don’t think they understand it.” His eyes welled with tears as he recalled the sights and sounds in a Honolulu hospital in the days following the attack. His brother, who was also serving in the military, had been transported to that hospital just two days prior to the attack to be treated for jaundice. When DeWitt arrived, he could not have been prepared for what he saw. “That was the worst experience, though. So many of the casualties that morning were attacks by fire bombs,” he says. “It was terrible that morning.” After Pearl Harbor, DeWitt fulfilled his remaining time in the Navy in San

Francisco and Guam. It was during those final months in Guam that he and Mary sent letters to each other every day, and as soon as he was out of the military, he traveled back to Florida to propose. DeWitt and Mary were married in 1946. “I’d never seen her, never touched her, never saw her for six years, but I was as certain she was the one for me as anybody could ever be,” he says. “I never had a doubt.” After they were married, they settled in Wawaka, Ind., where they owned and operated a small grocery store. Seven years later, with A&P and Kroger rapidly growing, DeWitt sold his store and put an offer on a bowling alley in Culver, Ind. In May 1953, DeWitt and his family moved to Culver to run the Lake Shore Lanes, or simply, the Bowling Alley. The Bowling Alley, located on Lake

respect and, yes, true love. For all he has endured, DeWitt does not feel worthy of the recognition. “I know that’s the way history works, you know, the last ones get all the credit, but it’s the way people are, the way they shake your hand, the way they talk to you, it’s something these other guys don’t get,
and I get it,” DeWitt says. “Makes you feel unworthy of it.” His experience, his story, his service is a valuable connection for present generations to understand and appreciate the past. For his service and contributions to our country and to Culver, DeWitt is certainly worthy of all the gratitude and recognition he receives.

Shore Drive where the Lakehouse Grill currently operates, was a true family business. James and Mary ran the business with the help of their four children, who peeled potatoes and waited tables. Business was slow to start, but it soon became a popular place in town for bowlers, visitors to the lake and locals alike. The bowling alley’s burgers, tenderloin sandwiches and lemonade all became local favorites. Even years later, he still hears from people who remember the tenderloin sandwich or his famous lemonade. “People said our water was better, too,” he jokes. James and Mary owned the bowling alley until December 1977. They remained in Culver for their retirement, all of their children staying close by in either Culver, Carmel or Lafayette. His beloved Mary passed away in 2005. DeWitt can state exactly the number of years, months, days and hours since that day. After searching for belonging, purpose and love throughout his youth, DeWitt has lived his life in a way that has garnered honor,

gatherings, Dillner would provide a craft for the entire family to do together.
“I’ve always enjoyed arts and crafts and there’s never been a time when I didn’t do it,” she says. “One year, I was looking for something different to do with the family, and we decided to each paint a specific picture together. Everyone loved it and they suggested I should go out and teach classes to the public.” Dillner began to hold Canvas and Beyond style art classes and the idea took off. Today, she hosts classes and parties for birthdays or family reunions throughout Marshall and Starke Counties but she will travel as

far as Fulton and Pulaski Counties. She offers many varied projects that all ages can enjoy. The cost ranges between $5 to $40 and depends on the size of what is being painted within a typical two-hour time period. “If paint can go on something then it’s an option,” she says. “I’ve hosted classes where people have done welcome mats, wine glasses, windows, wood signs, rocks and shells. My instruction is step-by-step and sometimes I use stencils so all ages can enjoy the experience. I’ve had toddlers all the way to a 92-year-old.”
You can have a custom mini log cabin delivered right to your property like this starting at $25,000!
People can prepay and register for, in addition to viewing, what will be painted in upcoming classes on her website. Events this spring will include painting an eight-by-ten canvas at the North Judson Library on Tuesdays at 4 pm on May 14 and June 11. Dillner will also be at the Plymouth Library on Saturdays May 18 and June 15 at 9 am. Cost of each of these library hosted classes is $10 per participant. Besides traveling around the area, Dillner reaches and benefits residents in other ways. By request, she will create custom pieces such as personalized signs or murals. She also devotes time to organizations such as the Starke County Youth Club. Recently, Dillner held an event at Sporty’z Grill and Bar in Knox to raise money for the Bass Lake Festival. One of the festival’s happenings will be Bass Lake & Canvas led by Dillner on Friday, July 26 from 7 to 9 pm. It is for all ages and experiences levels and costs $20 for all supplies plus food and drinks. Preregistration is required. “The best part about the classes I teach is the fun everyone has,” Dillner says. “There is constant laughter and everyone’s art comes out different. That’s what makes it great.”

WORRY-FREE LIVING AUTUMN TRACE PROVIDES SENIORS W I T H A P L AC E TO C A L L H O M E Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
Imagine living in a place where you could spend your days relaxing, visiting with friends and not having to fret about all of the responsibilities that come with home ownership. That worry-free, maintenancefree living experience was precisely what the owner of Autumn Trace wanted to offer seniors in rural Indiana when he built Autumn Trace in Plymouth. Privately owned by Jim Gillen, the company specializes in a hands-on approach to catered independent and assisted living. With locations in Attica, Linton and North Vernon, they build in areas that are in great need of assisted living. According to Joseph Collins, Executive Director of the brandnew Plymouth location, the community
has 56 large suites that range from 400-sq. ft. studios to one-bedroom (590 sq. ft.) and two-bedroom (752 sq. ft.) apartments.
a doctor’s appointment, the barbershop or the town’s exercise facility, staff at Autumn Trace provides transportation.
The state-of-the-art, pet-friendly facility includes a beauty salon, café, chapel, movie theatre and game room that has card tables that convert into bumper pool tables. Down the main corridor, just past the restaurant area, is the Wall of Honor dedicated to their veterans.
“Amenity-wise, we’re so close to everything here in town,” Collins says.
Residents can relax in one of the four screened-in porches or lounge in one of the two large courtyards, complete with grill, fireplace and comfy outdoor furniture. Or they can play bingo, attend an exercise class “We have a folded framed flag on the wall and or bake in the clubhouse. pictures of all our veterans,” Collins says. “Families often reserve the clubhouse when they want to celebrate a birthday Included with the rent, residents receive or some other occasion because it has three hot homemade meals a day as well as snacks and drinks available at the café. Each a long farmhouse table and a beautiful chandelier,” Collins says. “Families can unit is also furnished with a microwave, mini-fridge, spacious closets and individual store food in the refrigerator and have a room thermostats. If residents need a ride to private meal together.” 52 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / thelakesmagazine.com
The large facility feels even more expansive due to all the natural lighting that gushes in from the massive windows. “The windows take up most of the wall,” Collins says. “They are just shy of being floor-to-ceiling.”
OUR GOAL IS TO HELP OUR RESIDENTS STAY HERE FOR LIFE BECAUSE THIS IS SUCH A SPECIAL PLACE TO CALL HOME.
Another great design involves the size of the doorways, which are all 36 inches wide and ADA compliant to accommodate wheelchairs. In addition, walk-in showers have a bench that folds up and down as well as a hand-held shower so those sitting down can rinse themselves. To help prevent injuries, the building is one level.
- JOSEPH COLLINS
“Once you hit the parking lot, there’s not a step throughout the facility,” says Collins, noting that another nice feature is the raised outlets so that residents don’t have to bend down as far. For safety reasons, the facility has a system wherein residents may wear a pendant and, if an emergency arises, staff can find them. Maintenance-free living means that residents’ rooms get cleaned weekly from top to bottom, including sweeping, dusting, disposing of trash and washing bed linens and towels. In addition, the facility has two large laundry rooms, enabling residents to do their own laundry. If they prefer, however, they can get their clothes laundered for a nominal fee. The staff recognizes that needs fluctuate so they offer extra care services in an ala carte fashion. For instance, if a resident needs helping taking a shower, whether it’s once a day or twice a week, they pay per shower. Or perhaps they need assistance getting up and dressed in the morning, doing their hair, and making their bed. They can sign up for those things and be charged a flat monthly fee. thelakesmagazine.com / MAY 2019 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / 53
“Say a resident goes into the hospital and when they get out, they need help getting up and going to bed,” Collins says. “Two weeks later, they may not need that service anymore so we only charge them for those two weeks.” Autumn Trace recently celebrated their Grand Opening. They officially opened their doors on May 6 and are currently taking deposits. Come take a tour and see for yourself the beauty of worryfree living. “Folks can pick whatever room best suits their wants and needs,” Collins says. “Our goal is to help our residents stay here for life because this is such a special place to call home.” Autumn Trace is located at 2560 West Lake Ave. in Plymouth. THE THREE-SECOND IMPRESSION Writer / Karin Glass
As you start college or job search, the three-second impression is key to potential success. Time to start the clock and count one…two…three! Easy, well that is the time it takes to make an impression on a person you are greeting, meeting, passing in the hall or with whom you are interviewing. Not enough time. About 95 percent of the observing party will have formed some opinion of you. A great impression, easy to keep the positive ball rolling. A bad first look, lots of time and energy to turn it around when you could have been moving forward with your conversation. It is easy to go about life and never meet face to face. Text, computer screens and all the modern devices tend to keep us isolated. They also tend to cause stress. Without firsthand experience, that conversation, impersonal communication can be misread and the parties are not informed of the value of a potential relationship. So let’s start from the beginning. Look the best that you can. Dress appropriately, no slouching, no controversial t-shirts, hats or other items. In this day and age, basic is better. I call it by the anachronism BIB (Basic is Better). Do you like seeing an infant with food all over his mouth and bib? Nope, then clean up your act.

METAL ROOFING FOR YOUR HOME
When greeting someone, use a twopump handshake with a moderate grip. Over-enthusiasm is a turn-off. Fist pumping and other “trending” ways of greeting are risky when making a first impression. Look your host, or the person you are greeting, straight in the eye and respond or initiate a greeting and a thank you for the invitation. In this case, a moderate case of aggressive welcoming makes everyone feel comfortable.
• CLASS 4 IMPACT RESISTANCE UL LISTED 2218
Follow the host’s lead and start pleasant conversation. It is important to continue to initiate eye contact. In all cases mute, hide and do not engage a phone or other electronic device. Listen to your host and then engage in conversation. If you do not know how to respond to a question, redirect the question back to continue the engagement. For example, your host asks you if you have lived in Miami. You have not. But instead of just saying, “No” you keep the conversation going by questioning them back.
