A REFRESHING SUCCESS: COCA-COLA BOTTLING COMPANY CELEBRATES MORE THAN FOUR DECADES IN PLYMOUTH
In the office of Francis Ellert, plant manager of Coca-Cola Bottling Company, you’ll find Coke memorabilia adorning the walls, shelves and desk. He’s a long-time collector, and when asked about how he’s procured such an assortment of items, it becomes apparent that his growing collection is representative not only of his passion for Coca-Cola as a long-time local mainstay but the solidarity of the Marshall County community as well.

WHY THE BEST SUMMER DIET MAY BE NO DIET AT ALL
Writer / Meredith Iacocca, AbundantPlateWellness.com
I hear it like clockwork when I speak to women as warmer weather approaches. School is almost out, kids are getting restless and vacations are on the horizon. But what is the one thing of utmost priority? “Oh, I’ve been doing (insert fad diet) because we’re going on vacation in a few weeks and I don’t want to look like this in my swimsuit!” “I’m cutting out carbs because I need to slim down before going to Cancun!” I hear it All.The.Time. Insecurity and outward comparison I’m sure play a huge role in making us feel so self-conscious to look our best. But really what do you gain by obsessing over how you will look in that suit? Does it bring peace of mind? Most likely not. And is cutting out entire food groups a sustainable and healthy lifestyle for you? Again, probably not! Well, I’m here to tell you, you will look great! Probably the only person who cares how you look is you. Instead of focusing on the physical, I want to discuss just a few other things to pay mind to as summer comes along. Things that are not about a diet or a number on the scale but can help you feel energized, grateful and get the most out of your summer. 1. GO OUTSIDE FOR VITAMIN D The sun is the best source of vitamin D we cannot obtain through food. We’ve been fear mongered to believe that even an ounce of sunshine will ruin you with skin cancer, but, in reality, going outside and being in nature and sunlight is good for you! Not only is it linked to helping with anxiety and depression, but it keeps your skin and bones healthy as well.
2. GET TO YOUR LOCAL FARMER’S MARKET One of the many reasons I love summer is because of the amazing farmers markets we have. Not only is it a great way to support your community and local economy, but it’s a great place to bring your family to learn a little more about where food comes from. The produce you will find there will blow your typical grocery store produce out of the water. Most local farms practice much
more natural and organic farming methods that are better on the soil and keep more nutrients in the produce because they are grown free of pesticides and chemicals in soil that is healthy! 3. INVEST IN A BETTER SUNSCREEN This may sound contradictory to point number one about getting more sun but hear me out! There is a huge difference between

going outside to soak up some rays versus being outside and in the sun to the point of sunburn. Overexposure can be extremely dangerous especially when repeated over and over. But do you know what’s in your sunscreen? Often what we turn to for sun protection is riddled with toxic, harmful chemicals that are just as damaging as the sunburn it’s protecting us from. One common additive, oxybenzone, has been labeled a hormone disruptor, affecting testosterone levels in young boys and even being absorbed into women’s breastmilk. After all, our skin is our largest organ. It’s so easy to forget that what we apply to it can have a negative impact on our health. Instead, look for sunscreens with a Made Safe Seal on them, which signifies they are made without harmful ingredients. 4. BE PRESENT Sounds easy, right? But being mindful to your inner thoughts and creating gratitude for what’s around you can take some practice. It’s so easy to let the negative thoughts overcrowd being present in the moment. By focusing on what’s behind or what’s ahead of us, we lose sight of what’s right in front of us. Which if you think about it is really the only thing that’s important. Your ‘now.’ Health and wellbeing are so much more than the number on the scale. It’s about your mental health, nutrition and overall disposition of your life. Focusing on the minutia of one number brings you nothing more than an unnecessary stressor and a skewed view of what’s important. So, go outside a little more, enjoy what’s surrounding you and eat food that makes you feel good!

LOCAL MINISTRY PROVIDES CLOTHING FOR CHILDREN IN NEED Writer / Flannery Posner Photography Provided
in Starke County. They provide clothing, boots, shoes, new socks and underwear, beds or bedding, blankets, age-appropriate hygiene kits and much more to children who are in need.
Kid’s Closet Ministry was founded in 2013 by Linda Lewandowski after she recognized there was a dire need in her town of North Judson and throughout all of Starke County. When she had the idea to start Kid’s Closet, Lewandowski talked to her pastor. He told “God called and put it on my heart that her she would have to present the idea to the kids in this county needed some help,” the administrative board and have two she says. people from the church present to support the idea, too. We will be in their homes and that’s how we still do it.” Kid’s Closet Ministry serves children of all ages in Starke County and children in neighboring counties who attend school
She also made business cards to leave at each sale, told people what she was trying to do and offered to pick up any remaining children’s clothes if they would be willing to donate them. “I was amazed by how many people called and said, ‘You can come get the remaining kids’ clothes,’” she says.
a rummage sale the following spring, which raised $2,000. That money went to host her first pack-a-backpack event, which provided backpacks full of school supplies to children in need. In her first year of that event, she was able to provide backpacks and supplies to 108 children. Since that time, Kid’s Closet Ministry has only continued to grow. They collect their items through donations, and Lewandowski applies for grants for coats and boots. She also hosts a rummage sale each spring, which brings in $4,000 to $5,000, and a fish fry in the fall, which brings in close to the same amount. That money allows Lewandowski to purchase items for children if they do not have what the child needs from the donations. Kid’s Closet Ministry has also grown in the number of people serving and those served. Lewandowski has the help of an army of 40 to 50 volunteers from all over the county, many from other churches of various denominations all working together for the same cause. In 2018 alone, Lewandowski says they made 1,256 service calls. And the annual pack-a-backpack event has grown, too, serving 600 children in 2018.
In her first year, she accumulated a collection of children’s clothing, then hosted Children are identified to receive help from 12 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JUNE 2019 / thelakesmagazine.com
Kid’s Closet in a variety of ways. All school systems have the Kid’s Closet paperwork, so if a teacher recognizes that a child may need clothing, he or she can either give the paperwork to the parent or the school will often times contact Kid’s Closet directly if they see an immediate need. Parents or teachers can also call the North Judson United Methodist Church to provide a child’s information, at which point a volunteer from Kid’s Closet will follow up for more information and schedule a home delivery soon after. The home delivery is the primary way of serving the children. “This is about building their selfesteem and making them feel like any other child that’s in their school,” Lewandowski says. “So we make sure that what they have fits, that they like it, that it’s their style.” If the clothes they bring to the child do not fit, the volunteer will go right back to the Kid’s Closet facility and exchange it for something else and bring it back to the child. Before the volunteers leave, they pray with the families for any of their needs. Lewandowski has seen for herself the difference Kid’s Closet has made in so many children’s lives. “I see a lot of kids with growing selfesteem,” she says. “I’ve had other staff members in schools tell me what a difference it makes.” She recalls the time a friend who worked in the school system tried to tell her about one of her students who had received clothing from Kid’s Closet. “She just started bawling and had to turn around and walk away over this young man that received clothes from Kid’s Closet, and this is a high school student talking about this,” she says. Another teacher had a child in her class thelakesmagazine.com / JUNE 2019 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / 13
who was causing trouble and bullying other children, that is until he had a visit from Kid’s Closet. “She said he came into the classroom and he came up to her desk and said, ‘Look, Kid’s Closet was at my house last night. Look at my shoes, I got new shoes,’” Lewandowski says. “And she said he was a completely different kid, a complete turnaround, just because his self-esteem had gone up. He felt like everybody else. He didn’t feel like he had to stand out in a different way.” Kid’s Closet has not only had a profound impact on thousands of children’s lives in Starke County.

“Kid’s Closet has become my life,” Lewandowski says. “It’s just what God has called for and as long as he keeps blessing it, nothing can stand against it because the kids need us. The kids need us desperately. If anything ever happened to this ministry, I honestly don’t know what the kids would do because they count on us, they know us by name. They go to school and talk about Kid’s Closet.” In October 2018, Lewandowski was approached by a couple who had a vacant building in North Judson, and they wanted to learn more about her ministry. With that, Kid’s Closet Ministry had a new home after previously storing all donations in the church basement. “God just keeps blessing it,” Lewandowski says. “It’s amazing how he has blessed it over the years.” If you are interested in learning more or making a donation to Kid’s Closet Ministry, you can call the North Judson United Methodist Church at 574-896-5927 ext. 4. The Kid’s Closet building is located on Highway 10 in North Judson. There is a donation box in the front of the building to drop off donations. There is also a donation box in front of the Bella Vita Pregnancy Resource building in Knox.

All of the modern technology doesn’t take away from the feeling of nostalgia that visitors experience when they walk into the room, though. With new floors that look like a basketball floor, salt-glazed brick to look like old gymnasium walls, and even bleachers for people to watch old films on, sports fans are transported back to their high school days. Langdon highlights a big piece of history within the room, too.

“We have the original scoreboard from Centennial Auditorium. It’s cleaned, and all lit up, with the score of the last game played there,” Langdon says. Families are sure to have a good time, with plenty of space for kids to be immersed in the history of the county. “There will be a selfie station for kids, where they can pretend they’re sportscasters. There are microphones and scripts for them to read,” Langdon says. With a grant through the Indiana Historical
Society and Eli Lilly, the Marshall County Historical Society had been thinking about updating the room for a long time. “How it came to be was a couple years ago, we were updating other parts of the museum, and we went into the Sports Room and thought that it wasn’t doing justice to our county sports exhibit,” Langdon says. While you’re there, there are plenty of other unique exhibits to spend time in. The museum has made a push to make things more hands-on, with activities for kids and adults alike.
“There’s a farmers market for kids, a transportation room that explains why we’re called the crossroads. We have a Native American room that talks about the Potawatomi. We’re also doing a ghost tour this year,” Langdon says. If you want to feel history come alive, visit the Marshall County Historical Society at 123 N. Michigan St. in Plymouth. They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For questions and more information, you can call them at 574-936-2306 or visit them online at mchistoricalsociety.org.

“A lot of people will bring stuff to me at my office, and they’ll say they found something in their grandmother’s basement and want to add it to my collection because they found out one way or another that I’m a collector,” says Ellert, a graduate of John Carroll University. “It’s interesting to see it keep happening, and it’s nice to connect with people in that way.” Originally from Cleveland, Ellert moved to Indiana in the early 1990s and went to work in the admissions office at Culver Academy prior to joining Coca-Cola in July of 2001. He says working for the company still feels as fresh as it was on his first day, in large part because of Coca-Cola’s close involvement with Marshall County schools, businesses and charitable organizations. “There’s something different going on every day with new product innovations all the time, and that’s also what I’ve enjoyed in my time at Coca-Cola,” Ellert says. “That and the fact that we’re in a business that gives people great things to drink and makes people smile. We get to have a lot of fun doing what we do.” The history of Coca-Cola in Marshall County and surrounding areas goes back as far as some of the throwback memorabilia that has slowly accumulated in Ellert’s office. father-in-law, E.P. Severns, served as president of Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Kokomo for 60 years, and Severns’ father and two uncles purchased the Kokomo, Logansport and Peru Coca-Cola franchise back in 1935. Severns recently retired, maintaining a position as chairman of the company board, and his son Craig, who went to work for his dad in 1969, now serves as president. The elder Severns, now 88 years old, opened up the Plymouth plant in 1978, and Ellert says the facility has been a fixture of Marshall County since that time. “Between the Plymouth and Kokomo facilities we’ve been able to remain a decent-sized employer,” he says. “We’re strictly a distribution center now and shut down our production facility in 1989, and while we’ve had some attrition over the years we’ve never laid anybody off. We’re proud of that.” The Plymouth location currently employs 28 people, with 65 at its sister Kokomo facility.

“We’ve enjoyed a very nice relationship with the local community,” Ellert adds. “We’ve been fortunate to be able to give back in a lot of ways, and that’s a direct result of what the community has given us. So it’s been a harmonious relationship.” Ellert’s own extensive community involvement is indicative of his
passion for the county he’s lived in for nearly 30 years now. He’s been a Rotary Club member for 17 years, served on local college and hospital boards and served on the board of United Way and the Plymouthbased Marshall-Starke Development Center for developmentally disabled individuals. In 2010, he was named the Marshall County United Way’s Volunteer of the Year. “I’ve been fortunate to serve in various ways, and it’s been a pleasure since the community has given me so much as a great place to live,” Ellert says. “The quality of life here in the county is great, and you have access to so many different arts and cultural events and sporting events from the local to the collegiate level. And, of course, the natural resources with the great freshwater lakes are some of the best places to recreate and spend time with your family.”

During his time away from CocaCola and various local service duties, Ellert enjoys golfing and boating with his wife Susan and their four kids — Betse, 20, Pierce, 19, Fritz, 16, and Cabot, 14 — and occasionally finds time to visit auctions for his steadily expanding Coke memorabilia collection. “I have a lot of old bottles from various facilities all over the country through the years, and vintage metal signs that used to hang on old country stores,” Ellert says. “It’s a fun hobby because you get to talking to people about old bottles and stuff, and they’ll bring up memories from their childhood here in the county or around the area. You create a connection that way, and it will put a smile on their face. And that’s what our business is all about.”

Owners Luis & Alissa Ferro
BEER & WINE BAR COMBINES LOCAL FLAVOR & CUBAN AUTHENTICITY Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Cindy Heigl
When Rochester native Alissa Ferro and her husband Luis decided to open Uncorked Beer & Wine Bar, they knew their concept would include cuisine inspired by the Cuban dishes Luis grew up enjoying, courtesy of his mother and grandmother. However, they wanted to go even further to bring something unique to Rochester. “We wanted to have that Cuban part of it,
but also have a fun, inviting place where “We had such a great time out there and on people can come and relax,” says Alissa, who the plane ride back from Napa we decided we wanted to own our own wine bar,” co-owns Uncorked with Luis. Alissa recalls. “We always wanted to be our own bosses.” While working in the restaurant business down in Florida, Alissa met Luis, a In 2012, while still living in Florida, the Tampa native and first-generation CubanFerros purchased a commercial space on American, in a Naples-based Irish pub Main Street in Rochester, with an eye where they both were employed. Through the years, the couple discussed various ideas toward eventually launching a bar and eatery that would reflect the couple’s for opening their very own establishment, passion for wine, beer and Cuban dishes. and it was a trip to the Napa Valley that further inspired that dream.
30 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JUNE 2019 / thelakesmagazine.com
Over the next five years, they refined their concept and undertook market research throughout the Rochester area before officially opened the doors to Uncorked in September of 2017. Luis, who currently serves as head chef at Uncorked, offers several Cuban dishes, some with a twist — you’ll find traditional Cuban sandwiches, shrimp sofritos and braised flank steak among the entrees, as well as appetizers like a local cheese board, black bean soup bowl, and bread and butter. In case you’re wondering, it’s not your typical restaurant bread roll with wrapped pads of butter — we’re talking savory chorizo sausage butter and toasted Cuban bread here. “It’s kind of funny because two things that aren’t actually Cuban - our tacos and our sushi - are actually our big sellers,” Alissa says. “We put a Cuban twist on them, so maybe that’s why people have taken to them.” A diverse red and white wine list and Indiana-based craft beers comprise the drink menu, and last fall Uncorked won a grant to pursue an alcohol license that includes liquor. Consequently, the Ferros will be able to add cocktails to their drink menu in the near future. thelakesmagazine.com / JUNE 2019 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / 31
“Our plantain chips have been a huge success,” Alissa adds. “We serve those instead of French fries or potato chips with our sandwiches. We slice and fry them here in-house, made to order, and serve them with our sofrito mayonnaise which is kind of our signature sauce. People love it and it’s been a surprise hit that we didn’t expect.” Cuban inspiration adorns the walls as well as the plates — the Ferros put up Cuban artwork, accumulated from numerous trips to Cuba, as well as local artwork, much of which is available for purchase. Weekly special-event nights include taco specials on Mondays, Bringyour-own-record music night on Wednesdays (any genre is welcome), and Ladies Night with live music and food and drink specials on Thursdays. “We’ve gotten a lot of support — I have friends and family here, and we’ve grown a big base of regulars, which is really nice,” Alissa says. “And after almost two years we’re still growing and getting people who have never been here.” Alissa says it’s Uncorked’s unique, lively and colorful atmosphere and visual aesthetic, as much as its cuisine and drink menu, that keeps locals coming through the door. 32 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JUNE 2019 / thelakesmagazine.com

OPERA HOUSE FLORAL & GIFTS IS A DREAM COME TRUE FOR OWNER CARRIE HOFFMAN
When Opera House Floral and Gifts, 101 E. Main Street in Winamac, opened on June 26, 2017, it was a decades-old dream come true for owner Carrie Hoffman.
More than forty years later, opening a floral business in such a historic building marked off a huge dream of Hoffman’s. After admiring the building for so many years, when space opened up in it, she knew she had to jump on it.
“I’d seen this building years ago,” she remembers. “I’d just said, ‘Oh my gosh,’ because at the time, I was going to floral design school right after high school, and I thought that the building would be a great location for a flower shop.”
“There ended up being several other locations that opened up at the same time, but this one opened up in a building that’s an anchor for the town,” she says. “It would’ve been such a waste for this building to be torn down.”
Writer / Mary Lowry
The building, built in 1882, originally housed the Vurpillat’s Opera House. It was a cultural staple for the community, bringing countless live performances, including readings from Indiana native James Whitcomb Riley, a famous poet who wrote extensively about life in the Hoosier State. Today, it is recognized by the Indiana Historical Society as a historical site. After the opera house closed, the 14,000 sq. ft. building has held a huge variety of businesses, including a bank, a butcher shop and numerous pharmacies. The history

that comes with the building is something that Hoffman enjoys learning about from her customers. “It’s pretty amazing how people step back in time, and they remember it as a drug store and all kinds of things,” she says. “It’s neat to get all their stories coming in.” Hoffman also cites the community as being hugely influential in the success of the shop thus far. “They’ve really helped me. They help me get my name out there,” she adds. The store also holds immense sentimental value for Hoffman. Years ago, her mother took a photograph of her in a parade, where she was in front of the opera house. Since her mother passed away five years ago, the shop opening up in 2017 became even more special.
You can have a custom mini log cabin delivered right to your property like this starting at $25,000!
“She would’ve loved to see this all come to pass, to see it actually open,” Hoffman says fondly. “She would’ve been so proud seeing me succeed in my dreams.” The sentimental impact the store has for Hoffman is the thing that brings her the most joy about the business. Her joy and excitement about it are reflected in her employees as well as in the environment of the store. Widely recognized as warm and inviting, employees share in the love of serving the community. “It’s a good environment,” Hoffman

B OARD TREA SUR ER MIKE MCKEN NA TAL KS HIS TORY, IM PO RTA N CE OF KOO N TZ L AKE S EWER S Y S TEM Writer / Kyle Baird . Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
or the town of Koontz Lake, caring for the natural resources we are afforded here in Indiana is much more than just a concept. For them, maintaining and respecting the environment manifests itself in tangible, concrete ways through initiatives taken to sustain and support both the town and the lake, chief among those being the construction of a townwide sewer system. While not officially an incorporated town, the community of Koontz Lake has a rich history that goes back many decades. In the mid 1900s, the popularity of Koontz Lake as a recreation destination began to grow, and the lake started getting more traffic of users each year, until eventually lake goers began to look at the lake as a spot for vacation and retirement homes and the number of residents and homeowners rose as the years went on. While the increase of homes in Koontz Lake brought growth and excitement to the community, it also brought an array of complications and issues, particularly in regards to the health of the lake. Any growing community faces its own specific challenges, but one of the biggest concerns facing Koontz Lake was how to manage the growing amount of household waste that came along with a growing community. Koontz Lake residents primarily relied on septic systems as there were limited options otherwise, and the number of septic systems slowly started to put more and more of a strain on the lake to the point where many felt that alternative waste management solutions needed to be explored. It was then that a group of Koontz Lake residents decided to take action and look to install a sewer system that would be dependable, affordable and sustainable for years to come as the population of Koontz Lake grew.

One of the forerunners of the campaign to install a sewer system and current treasurer of the sewer board, Mike McKenna, recalls the early stages of the project and remembers what put the plan into motion. “We could see that the community had been evolving, and continues to evolve, from a weekend and seasonal community to a largely full-time residency, and that puts a lot of pressure on the land and the lake from septic systems on small lots close to the lake, McKenna says. “We could see that over the course of time this was not a good outcome, and we felt that we needed a centralized collection and treatment system for our sewage waste. Largely due to the efforts of Mckenna and the rest of the sewer board, the project began in 2007 with preliminary meetings to plan the installation of the sewer system as well as finding an engineering consultant to help ensure the project was completed effectively. While there were roadblocks along the way, such as high construction costs and logistical challenges to such a large venture, the system was officially completed in 2011 and offered sewage removal and treatment at an affordable cost to all residents of Koontz Lake. The installation of something such as a sewer system may often go overlooked or unnoticed in any community, but the work done by the sewer board to make sure Koontz Lake received proper sewage treatment has been a tremendous service to the town and has ensured further health of the lake for years to come. All visitors to the lake each year feel the effects of the work done by the sewer board and, largely thanks to them, another memorable summer at Koontz Lake is just around the corner. 42 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JUNE 2019 / thelakesmagazine.com

“The pinhole replaces a typical or conventional graft that somebody would go to a specialist for, where they have tissue removed from the roof of their mouth to put in the gum area. We don’t take a donor graft,” Dr. Shaw says. “We put small pinholes in the gum, so we can lower the gum to where it’s not receding anymore. The healing time is so much quicker, and those holes are gone within 48 hours. That is a certification you can only get from Dr. Chao, who is out in Los Angeles.” When he’s not learning more about how to be the best he can be for his patients, Dr. Shaw spends his free time learning more about the world through traveling. “I like to travel. We do a few trips a year. We like to see new things — things we’ve never seen before. Summertime, I like to golf or any kind of sports,” Dr. Shaw says. “I like just being outside, enjoying the outside when I can.” To experience the “relaxed, family, down-home atmosphere” of Family Dental Care, you can visit them at 1409 N. Enterprising and innovative, Skiles started his interest in vehicles and business at a young age. Holding various side jobs throughout the years taught him quite a bit about the machines he was working with. They also showed him the ins and outs of running your own company.
What started out as just “tinkering around” with machines quickly became something he loved. Soon after, he began working at the Ford Auto Salvage Yard, where he learned even more. The job there proved to be valuable as it set a clear path to his success in running his own business.
“When I was about 10, I would go around to garage sales and buy small motors and started repairing them,” he says. “I taught
“I worked at Ford’s Auto Salvage Yard when I was 16, and I worked there full-time for about a year,” Skiles says. “Then I opened
my own business, just in my parents’ barn. I went from there and ended up renting a small shop, and then I got a little bit bigger. We were there for about six months, and I slowly was accumulating a lot of what I needed, like tools and things, and then the shop where we are now opened up, and so we moved over here.” Despite having successful experiences in smaller business where it was just Skiles, gaining more traction and having a bigger shop proved to be challenging. “The biggest challenge was being on a small country road to being on a main street,” he says. “The business that was here before us had a good reputation, and so we had a lot of people already willing to come to us. I had to start hiring employees right away, and I wasn’t used to that.”

Having plenty of friends in the automotive business, though, proved to be impactful, as getting their input and advice helped tremendously. Skiles cites these influences as being important in his ability to overcome the challenges set forward when starting the business. He’s not just thankful for the help of his friends, though. Skiles recognizes how important the community has been in the success of his company. From those who came ready to support him from day one to other customers that have come in since their opening, he says that they are grateful for all the business the community has given them. “We are very thankful for all of the customers we’ve had so far,” Skiles says. “We look forward to serving the rest of the community.” Skiles hopes to encourage other young people trying to start their own business. He knows about the challenges and victories that

they will face in the process, and he is open to giving advice to those who look for it. “I would definitely say that you’re going to have points where you face challenges,” he says. “Don’t give up and keep pushing. If you have the drive, you can overcome any of the obstacles. There are definitely lots of ups and downs, but if you’re able to ride those out, keep pushing forward.” When asked about what makes their business successful, Skiles capitalizes on the employees that he works with. “We really advertise the fact that we’re honest,” he adds. “We don’t take advantage of people. We’re going to do everything in our power to keep our customers happy.” Skiles Automotive Service is located at 915 W. Plymouth St. in Bremen. GROWING VEGETABLES IN INDIANA GARDENS Writer / Carrie Petty
Momma knew what she was talking about when she told us to eat our veggies! Growing your own vegetables can be equally as beneficial. It is not nearly as hard as we make it, and it is so rewarding come harvest time. Spring rains have given way to flourishing foliage in the summer garden. The crops of early spring are now past their prime. Veggies like spinach, cilantro, peas, beets and more are all considered ‘cold crops’ and love the coolness of early spring soil. Now
we are really cooking with Crisco, because summer, warm-season crops are the bulk of what vegetable gardening is all about. Warm season growers are the primetime players in the Indiana vegetable garden. These will be able to thrive in your garden until late September. So let’s get planting. Beans, tomatoes, melon, eggplant and corn, just to name a few. Do not forget to plant peppers of all kinds and BASIL, BASIL and more BASIL! Success in the veggie garden comes from two main components — eight hours of
sunshine and great organic soil. I grow my veggies in the front yard of our suburban home out by Geist and use what is called a natural raised bed. This is where you dig the soil from left to right to make a long mounding row of dirt in which you plant your crops into. I have not built a wooden raised bed, but if you do choose to do so make sure you do not use treated wood. I feel this seeps into the soil. Your soil should be healthy and well nourished with compost and have great drainage. I love mushroom compost for my edibles. The vegetables take up what is in the soil

and we consume its contents. This is why the other two most important things, for consumption purposes, to remember are never use soil with any enhancements like ‘moisture control’ or ‘fertilizer pellets’ and always choose organic soil to put in the garden. Also, keep grass fertilizer and herbicides away from the edge of any garden from which you will eat what you grow. Not good. Also, I like to remind folks really stretch before you get out there and work. I had a very serious back injury this spring and could not continue cutting in my new bed or mulching. Big shout out to Property Pros who came to help me. Josh Springer, CEO and all around good dude, had his crew out to my gardens and helped me so much. You can reach them at 317436-8529. No room for a big farm garden? No worries. All crops do very well in containers. As long as those patio pots get eight hours of sun you are good to go. Lettuce does great on the deck, so do cherry tomatoes and herbs. Try some container gardens this summer too and see which method you like best. Every growing season I pick one thing that I have never grown, this helps me ‘grow’ as a gardener. This year’s unknown in my garden is going to be Pumpkin! Yes, I know, you would think when the children were younger we would have already tried this happy little gourd. But I must have been too busy working and mothering. I have always been so
intimidated to grow them, so this summer I am facing my fears. Gardening should not be intimidating as a hobby. Start small and grow each year. Mulch your veggies and keep them well watered twice a week. Don't water the foliage, this creates disease, so water around the base carefully so not to splash soil up onto the foliage. More disease. Keep weeding, this keeps moisture thieves away from the root systems of our veggies. Weeds are notorious criminals when it

comes to stealing water. And finally, for those pesky critters, you know I love a product called Shake Away. It is coyote pellets of urine (sorry, gross I know!) but it works so well if applied properly. Read all labels. You don’t want to guess on any type of applications. Get going with your growing. And as always, I hope this has helped contribute to teaching you all, “How to Grow a More Beautiful Life!”

10 DO’S & DON’TS FOR EVERY GUEST THIS WEDDING SEASON a plus-one. Weddings are expensive and usually 100% planned for, sometimes down to every last seat. In most cases, the couple would probably love to extend a plus-one invite to everyone, but it might be out of their control. Note, if the invite is addressed to you only, you can assume that means no plus-one. And, unless you think there’s been a mistake, please don’t ask for an exception.
Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
Summer wedding season is here and it’s always a great excuse to get dressed up, enjoy fancy signature drinks and dance the night away. But don’t forget, the fact the happy couple wants you to share in their big day is also a privilege not to be taken advantage of! Remember, they’ve spent months planning this special event and are footing the bill so it’s best to be the most awesome guest in return.
RSVP BEFORE THE DEADLINE
There is a lot to take in as a wedding guest and every wedding is different so make sure to know what is expected of you before you go. It’s a big day for the couple and they’ve spent countless hours preparing and planning an event of a lifetime. Here are 10 important dos and don’t when it comes to wedding guest etiquette.
ASSUME YOU CAN BRING A PLUS-ONE It’s very important to read exactly how your invitation is addressed. Unless it states “and guest,” please don’t assume you can bring
Listen, we understand that mail can be hard to keep track of sometimes, especially during wedding season when it seems like everyone is getting married! But remember, your RSVP is needed to finish up some of the wedding planning like providing final guest counts to caterers and making seating charts. Planning a wedding is already a lot of work, and the bride and groom don’t need to be following up with each and every guest. Make it easy for them and RSVP early, like right away. Do it as soon as you get the invite and check your calendar. Your friends will truly appreciate your swift return of the RSVP card. And don’t hesitate to include a nice, warm note
of congratulations and thank you in your RSVP too.
IGNORE THE DRESS CODE No one likes to feel out of place when it comes to attire. Being both overdressed or underdressed can cause you to feel uncomfortable in any social gathering. So remember, dress codes are there to help you feel comfortable, not to make you dress a certain way. A dress code helps a guest choose the right outfit that will fit the tone of the event. And if the couple suggests specific dress code thoughts, they are probably doing so for a good reason. If in doubt, it’s always better to dress more up, than more down. Oh, and don’t wear white!
READ THE WEDDING WEBSITE The happy couple has either emailed, sent with their invitation or posted their wedding website to all their social media accounts. Make sure you visit it. Check there first before contacting the couple with any last minute questions. These wedding
54 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JUNE 2019 / thelakesmagazine.com
websites have become so much more than just a slideshow! They can be full of information, and most couples create them specifically to share information and spare themselves from being bombarded with questions from guests. The website will likely also provide a schedule, registries and venue details. They usually also disclose any discounts for booking hotels or secret travel tips.
BE PUNCTUAL Being on time is one of the most important things you can do as a guest. Every bit of this day is scheduled from the walking down the aisle to the cutting of the cake so while it might be acceptable for the bridal party to be fashionably late, it’s not okay for the guests to be!
Welcome to Sanders Foods, we specialize in the groceries your family needs. CELEBRATING 40 YEARS!
Make sure to arrive at the ceremony at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled ceremony time. If you aren’t familiar with the area or venue, then make sure to build in a little extra travel time to allow for getting lost and parking.
TAKE PHOTOS DURING THE CEREMONY Many couples nowadays are opting for unplugged or device free ceremonies and with good reason. Just about every wedding photographer out there will tell you that the most beautiful ceremony shots can be completely ruined by those lovely guests who pull out their phones to capture the moment themselves. But if the couple hasn’t invited you to take photos, then keep the phone put away and just enjoy the moment. It’s the pro’s job anyways. Plus, the happy couple is likely to post their gorgeous photos from the wedding at a later date for everyone to see.
LEAVE THE BRIDE ALONE Any time before the wedding is reserved for family and wedding party only. Don’t try to pop in and say hi while the bride

is getting ready or call her that morning with questions. Do. Not. I can promise you that there is at least one other person who can answer any questions you might have the morning of the wedding. The bride is so busy and will have enough to worry about that day.
GO OVERBOARD ON DRINKS Listen, everyone loves to indulge in a drink
or two and everyone loves an open bar at a wedding. Just make sure you don’t overdo it. Because no one likes the drunk guy (or girl) at a wedding. The food is one of the best things that guests talk about after weddings. Be mindful of your serving sizes if it is buffet style and open bar. By all means, enjoy the food and drinks but don’t take advantage. Keep it classy.
BRING A GIFT Make sure you bring a gift. It’s best to stick to the registry. Most couples these days already own a bunch of things so the registries are a great way to get the couple what they really want. If you are risking going off the registry, make sure it’s something you know the couple will love.
HAVE A GOOD TIME When it comes down to it, the couple wants everyone to have a great time celebrating. Everything chosen for this day has been thoughtfully selected to create an awesome experience and you should enjoy it! Dance and mingle with other guests in honor of the happy couple. Enjoy all that’s been organized for the evening like lawn games or the photo booth. Keep any negative comments to yourself and, instead, put your best foot forward to cherish every moment of the night. Although weddings are always a lot of fun, it’s important to acknowledge all the work involved to bring them to fruition. They are a huge task for any couple, which makes being a wedding guest even more special. So next time you receive a beautifully pressed new wedding invitation, keep these 10 dos and don’ts in mind from the RSVP to the reception. Not only will this show your appreciation to the happy couple, but you can also help them enjoy a stress-free celebration and create memories for a lifetime! 56 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JUNE 2019 / thelakesmagazine.com
