Home. For being such a small word, its concept is expansive and means something different to each person. The word triggers a cascade of memories, like sitting around the table eating dinner or reclining in the den watching TV. Some have fond memories of sitting on a parent or grandparent’s lap as small children, snuggled against their chest, resting in a favorite rocker. Of course, everyone knows the relief of relaxing on a comfortable bed after a long day. The often-overlooked props of these memories are the furniture. Yet, these accents help make the difference between a comfortable, beautiful solace and an incommodious living space.

Owner Gracie Byroad

EVERYTHING YOU NEED Dale Hardy Supplies Owner Reflects on Longevity & Customer Dedication Writer / Mary Lowry Photographer / Jubilee Edgell

Dale Hardy Supplies has been a staple in Logansport since the original staff first opened its doors in 1955. Gracie Byroad has worked at the store for the last 20 years. Today she runs it with her mother, Cindy Blackman, and her sister, Rhiana Lavender. Byroad was attending Purdue University when she decided to take a break from school and look for a job instead. She visited the store because she heard its owners were looking for help, and she met Dale himself. He told her to report back the next morning to start working. “Then, he was looking for more help later on, and so I asked my mom and my sister to join, Byroad says. When the previous owner was ready to retire, it made sense for Byroad and her family to take over. Byroad herself says the family could not imagine being anywhere else, and a big part of that collective mentality comes from the relationships built with customers throughout the years. Strong relationships with customers is something that the entire staff at Dale Hardy Supplies values, and the employees put in the work to make sure each patron is well taken care of. Known for offering the largest selection

of Carhartt clothing in Indiana, Dale Hardy Supplies has much more for customers to enjoy. The staff offers shoes, and sells everything from pet supplies to overalls to kayaks. Customers can select from a wide range of brands - the shelves are stocked with Twisted X, Redwing, LaCrosse, John Deere, Old Town and more. Not only can customers pick from a wide variety of brands, but Byroad and her employees also offer a wide variety of services for customers. The staff offers leather repair, shoe fitting, custom leather and special-order clothing. Few changes have occurred within the store itself throughout the years, but the amount of products offered has drastically changed. “In the ‘50s Dale started buying [fur] for trading, and selling Carhartt clothes and rubber boots, and then the Redwing clothing and Carhartt boots took off,” Byroad explains. “We’ve added some

great brands. Old Town kayaks and canoes, Lodge cookware, knives, ENO hammocks, Keen utility footwear. They’re all good boots.” When a customer buys a pair of boots from Byroad and her team at Dale Hardy Supplies, the staff records the kind of boots purchased, what size, and any additional information needed. As a result, if the customer comes back and would like to purchase more boots, the staff can reference exactly what that customer needs. “We look at our records, look at their card, and send them out with what they had before,” Byroad explains. “We truly want you to be happy with your purchase. We carry the smallest to the largest sizes in both boots and clothing.” The entire team at Dale Hardy Supplies cares about serving customers, right down to Ance, the resident Labrador mix greeter. Serving customers is a top priority for Byroad and her employees, even during uncertain times. “During these difficult times, our hours might be sparse or we might have to close, but we aren’t going anywhere,” Byroad says. “We will be here for many years to come to serve our customers. We appreciate each and every one of our customers.” The shop’s service goes beyond customers in the store. Byroad and her team host a raffle every year around Christmas. The winners are selected on Christmas Eve, and all of the

is the existence of two different Chautauquas on the lake. Former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt described Chautauquas as “the most American thing in America,” though if you’re not familiar with the term today, you’re not alone. Their names were derived from the first Chautauqua, the New York Chautauqua Assembly, organized in 1874 by a Methodist minister on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in New York State. In the years before television or even radio, the numerous Chautauquas that sprouted up across the U.S. might be described as Christian-oriented “edutainment”, a mixture of preaching and teaching with a variety of other content, much of it non-religious - everything from science demonstrations and historical lectures to theater and opera. By the turn of the 20th century hundreds of permanent Chautauquas had opened across the U.S., usually on land outside a town or city but accessible by railroad, and boasting buildings and facilities intended to last for some years. Such were the Chautauquas of Lake Maxinkuckee. Some readers today may even recall Chautauquas that lasted well into the 1930s and 1940s, known as tent Chautauquas, meaning they were set up in an accessible site in or near a town and featured preaching and performance for a week. Such traveling programs were regular occurrences not only in Culver, but every surrounding town as well, into the 1940s.

MAXINKUCKEE CHAUTAUQUA DAYS How 19th-Century “Edutainment” Helped to Put Culver on the National Map

Writer / Jeff Kenney Photography Provided

It’s no secret that Lake Maxinkuckee has been a destination for more than a century for many reasons, but one often-forgotten but fascinating chapter of its historical draw

The first permanent Chautauqua on Lake Maxinkuckee played an indispensable role in what was to become a staple institution of the area. Henry Harrison Culver, who had started his Wrought Iron Range stove company in St. Louis, retired to Maxinkuckee’s shores in the 1870s, and by 1886 he owned more than 300 acres on the lake. In 1889 he built a tabernacle, a large building for crowds to watch preaching and performances, as well as a stately hotel and

some cottages, and opened the Culver Park Assembly Chautauqua. That year it attracted more than 20,000 visitors and featured internationally renowned preachers T. DeWitt Talmage and Sam Jones. Despite the acclaim that H.H. Culver’s Chautauqua received, he closed it down after the 1890 summer season and the buildings lay mostly fallow until the autumn of 1894, when he used both structures to start the Culver Military Academy (CMA). The former Chautauqua hotel became the first barracks, classroom and mess hall for the school, and sat where the 1895-built Main Barrack resides today. In fact, just six months after the CMA opened, the wood frame hotel burned down. Today’s Main Barrack brick building replaced it, remarkably completed between February and September of 1895, and today it is the oldest building on the school’s campus proper.

Reno B. Welbourn, the Barnard and Harrington orchestras, the Gibson-TrotterWagner trio of young woman artists, and Dr. Samuel Sellers with his moving pictures.

Ironically, that dazzling session would be the Assembly’s last, with a foreclosure suit filed on the land in December of that year.

That year’s Patriotic Day included an address by Congressman James Watson, a demonstration and sham battle by the Culver Naval School’s cadets, as well as a water carnival with a parade and fireworks.

After the closure, the Assembly’s former hotel, known in the years following as the Ralston, continued to do robust business of its own, but it burned down in a 1911 kitchen fire.

Culver’s Chautauqua experiment may have been short lived, but in less than 10 years a similar venture of greater longevity emerged. The Maxinkuckee Assembly, established 1899, covered an area of 26 acres occupying the entire south side of what is today the town of Culver (spanning approximately from today’s Davis Street to the cemetery, and along the lake shore). The Maxinkuckee Assembly boasted its own post office, cottages and a lavish hotel for guests, a large tabernacle for preaching and performing, croquet and tennis grounds, and even a train stop along the Vandalia line. The railroad company advertised transportation right to Maxinkuckee Park, known as a refined summer resort. The best talent was engaged - legendary prohibitionist Carrie Nation, famous for breaking up beer barrels with hammer or axe, was among those slated to appear during the 1901 session, though she was jailed for her activities and unable to attend - and the annual program drew patrons from afar. The fame of the Assembly spread over a wide territory. Typical of the Maxinkuckee Assembly’s programming was the 1905 session, which included not only a cast of more than 60 performers and musicians, but also Professor

If those familiar with Culver have pondered the Spanish street names (such as Nueva Gorda and Obispo) on its south side in an area historically lacking in residents of any Spanish-speaking background, their origins lie in the purchase, in 1909, by Culver businessman J.O. Ferrier of the former Assembly grounds. He platted today’s streets there, which he gave Cuban/Spanish names inspired by his and his wife’s visit to Florida and Cuba - quite a novelty in those days. And so the dominance of Chautauqua culture on Maxinkuckee’s shores had ended, though perhaps exemplifying its once-prominent status are the lyrics of a pop song, “Maxinkuckee,” composed by Frank C. Huston, secretary of the Assembly in 1905 and a nationally renowned soloist, with the intention of popularizing the Maxinkuckee Assembly. Among its lyrics: The poets sing of the Emerald Isle, With waters entrancingly fair And Switzerland boasts of her Gem of the Alps, Resplendent with beauty so rare Though over and over the world I go, There’s beauty on every hand I know, And countless joys to be found, but, Oh! ‘Tis Fair Maxinkuckee for me. Oh! Let us go boating, Go merrily floating, Over the crystal wave we’ll glide and from care be free. Oh! Here is a treasure, Here’s joy without measure, I am so lucky, and Fair Maxinkuckee’s the place for me.

Green Oak Antiques is a fun place to shop — a girl’s-day-out kind of place. There are three buildings full of old, new and salvage items backdropped by a beautiful country setting right outside Rochester. These

buildings are filled with a variety of items, perfect for collectors and home decorators alike. Ann and Steve Furnivall started the business in 1978. At first, they exclusively sold antiques. Their children, Jon and Julie, grew up with the business and eventually

joined the team. Jon’s wife, Terri, also came on board as the company’s techie. “We just sold out of our house at first,” Furnivall says. “Now we’ve got a 10,000 square-foot store.” Over time, the business became a

destination for curio shoppers as well as antique collectors. “People come from a hundred miles — even 200 miles, sometimes,” she says. After 20 years of selling antiques, they decided to include other kinds of home décor items to appeal to the changes in the market, which included home decorators of all ages.

Eventually, they also expanded into other kinds of styles — like farmhouse, vintage, boho, country and fancy. In time, Green Oak also carried garden décor, such as gazebos, planters, arches, garden furniture and more. Nonetheless, they still offer a wide range of vintage and antique items. Green Oak is particularly known for its exclusive furniture. They offer 200 different pieces, all of which were designed

HAMMERING AWAY Jayh Construction Offers Quality Home Renovation Services Writer / Tracey Ruckman Photographer / Lana King

Aaron Jay Miller and his brother, Elmer H. Miller grew up on their family’s small, rural farm. When they were finished with school they began working construction jobs to help supplement the family income. Eventually, they were lead to the RV industry for employment, but they never lost sight of their dream to have their own construction business. When the recession happened in 2007-2008, the RV industry slowed significantly. The brothers went back to what they knew and began picking up construction gigs here and there to keep

their family finances afloat. Aaron and his wife Ida, had five children to support, and Elmer and his wife Linda, had five children as well. “One thing led to another and finally we decided to run some ads and see what kind of response we got,” Aaron says. “In the spring of 2009, I took a voluntary layoff from the RV industry and jumped out of the pan and into the fire. My goal at that point was to have enough work for the two of us, a driver and work for my sons when they got older.” Aaron and Elmer’s dream became a reality and Jayh [pronounced JH] Construction was born. The brothers and business partners derived the name from their

combined middle initials and, 11 years later, Jayh Construction is still hammering away. “We started out doing anything we could get, but roofing and remodeling are what got us going,” Aaron says. Interior trim work, cabinet installs and windows and doors, followed suit, and, before they knew it, the brothers had built their first new home from start to finish within three years of starting the business. “One thing I really enjoy as a business owner is all the great people we get to know and the great friendships that come with that,” Aaron adds. “It’s a great feeling knowing that I’ve contributed to my customers and employees in a positive way. It’s very rewarding to help someone select quality products and see their dreams come true.” Jayh Construction prides itself on quality work at an affordable price. “If it’s worth doing - do it right the first time,” Aaron says. The Miller brothers share the responsibilities of the business and have 12 full-time employees. Aaron takes all customer calls, provides the quotes and estimates and supplies the material lists and material orders. He also handles the office responsibilities. Elmer is the project manager. He meets with the customers, finds out what they need, takes measurements and follows up a second time to review the plans and set a schedule. THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JUNE 2020 / thelakesmagazine.com

There are three crews lead by Duane, Steve and Lamar. They are all well versed in their skills and help each other out when needed. “I’m blessed to have such great employees, I couldn’t do it without them,” Aaron says. Jayh Construction can do any type of roofing a customer needs and the business is a certified installer for GAF shingles. Shingles are the primary roof material used, but Jayh also offers standing seam metal roofing and EcoStar roofing, which is made from recycled plastic.

Midwest Farm and Pet Bremen Pet Supplies Store Celebrates 10th Anniversary Writer / Mary Lowry Photographer / Lana King

Lonnie Borkholder has been the proud owner of Midwest Farm and Pet in Bremen since he first opened it in 2010. He and his employees work hard to make sure that they are helping their customers and the community achieve success. The business started as a way to spend more time with his family. Borkholder left his job in an RV factory to open his own business. “I wanted to do something at home with my family and have something that I could possibly pass on to my children that’s a sustainable business,” Borkholder says.

Another inspiration to start Midwest Farm and Pet was a way to reinvest in the community. Animal feed and pet supplies seemed to be missing in Bremen, so Borkholder decided to open his store as an asset to the community. He also believes that every child should have an animal while growing up, and by opening his store, he could help promote that practice. “Having [a pet] and having chores makes a more responsible adult,” he says. Midwest Farm and Pet has served the community well in its past 10 years. They fill all kinds of animal and agricultural needs, offering customers animal feed, animal health care products, pasture seeds, lawn seeds and fertilizer. They also provide animal vaccines. Borkholder says that they also carry quite a bit of supplies for deer hunting, like hunting blinds. The store is recognized as a local Purina dealer, meaning they have a vast selection of Purina food and supplements for your animals. They carry Purina’s full line of Honor Show, their High Octane line and more. The employees at Midwest Farm and Pet are knowledgeable about the various lines and enjoy answering whatever questions customers may have. What really sets the business apart, though, is its equine

supplies and kennel products. Customers can find quality dewormers, dog food and kennels for their pets. Borkholder shares that his business is truly unique for its equine and dog knowledge. “We have our own horse breeding farm and our own kennel, so we can help people from our own experience on what works best,” he says. “It’s the expertise of not just selling feed, but we can go in and help them with other issues they’re experiencing. We’re not just here to sell you feed, we’re here to help you be successful.” That desire to help customers be successful extends to the larger community of Bremen. Borkholder enjoys giving back to the community as often as he can. While Midwest Farm and Pet does not hold specific fundraisers for causes, Borkholder and his team try to show goodwill toward individual families who may be struggling. His help on a local level tends to focus on one-on-one interactions with people. “We recognize that all of our blessings come from the community, so we want to give back to them,” Borkholder says. “We value and appreciate our customers, without them, [Midwest Farm and Pet] wouldn’t be possible.”

Midwest Farm and Pet would also not be as successful without its dedicated employees. Borkholder has five employees who care about the customers just as much as he does. The structure of the company is different from a typical corporate business. People are able to work in an environment that emphasizes good, community-based values. “We create a better working environment for people. They can make a living where there are Christian and family values,” Borkholder says. “We try to treat everybody the way they want to be treated. [We value] fairness, honesty and trustworthiness, those are the main three.” Having an enjoyable workplace environment makes all the difference in employees’ lives. Borkholder abides by the notion that if you do something you love, you will never work a day in your life. “I tell people that I retired at 27 years old,” he says. You can learn more about Midwest Farm and Pet on their Facebook page, Midwest Farm and Pet. It is open from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Thursday, from 8 am to 4 pm on Friday, and from 8 am to 12 pm on Saturday. Midwest Farm and Pet is located at 535 5B Road in Bremen. Triple Oak Sales

Local Bike Shop Offers Diverse Products and Comprehensive Repairs

Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Jubilee Edgell

According to leading bicycle experts, there are between one and two billion bicycles in the world, and about 47,600 are sold daily. That’s about one bike every two seconds. Marlin Hochstetler, owner of Triple Oak Sales, contributes to that number as he sells and maintains bikes at his shop outside of Nappanee. For him, bicycles have always been a part of life. “I’m Amish, so with my culture I grew up riding bikes,” Hochstetler says. However, the inspiration for opening his own bike shop came from a store in Nappanee called Fox’s Bike Shop. “As a small boy, I’d go with my dad uptown and he’d stop at this bike shop, and he’d buy parts to repair or maintenance his own bike at home,” Hochstetler says. “We had a bicycle stand, and tools and such to go with it. As him and old man Fox were

talking, I would wander around the shop and always dream of having this kind of business on my own.” That dream became a reality in 2018 when Hochstetler was given the opportunity to purchase a local bicycle business. He reopened it outside Nappanee and renamed it Triple Oak Sales, specializing in bicycle sales and service. “This is a family business,” he says. “It’s myself and the boys. And my wife - she’s kind of my secretary.” Hochstetler learned how to repair bikes from his father. “He was a do-it-yourselfer,” Hochstetler says of his dad. “He taught us boys at home how to be mechanically minded and not be afraid to tear into things.” Over time, Hochstetler became an expert in bicycle repair and maintenance.

“I do anything - I will change tires, fix flats, fix broken chains, and I’ll true wheels,” he says. “I’ll replace bearings in wheels. I’ll do complete overhauls. I’ll help you try to customize your bicycle to fit your needs.” Repairs is one of Hochstetler’s favorite parts of his bike business, especially when a job is particularly challenging. “A person brings it into the shop and says, ‘I’ve taken this bike to numerous different shops and it hasn’t worked right since, and it doesn’t ride well,’” he says. “And then they take it out for a ride after I’m done with it and I can see in their eyes and hear it in their voice that they’re well pleased. That’s worth more to me than the little paycheck that I get. I want to do the best I can with my God-given abilities to do a service to the community, and I guess make a small living while I’m at it.” Along with maintenance and repairs, Triple Oak Sales offers a wide variety of parts,

As he looks toward the future, Hochstetler hopes to eventually work full-time at the bike shop. He also expects that bicycle culture will change dramatically with the introduction of the electric bike into the market. One aspect of the business that he hopes will remain is the ability to interact with customers.

“The most important thing I enjoy about the business is getting to know the people,” Hochstetler says. “If they want to stop and talk, great. I don’t mind if people just want to sit here and talk. I have time for that. If some people want to have their bicycle fixed, I’ll do that too.” Triple Oak Sales is located at 7134 W. 1300 North in Nappanee. Parenting During COVID-19 6 Essential Tips For Parents At Home With Kiddos Writer/ Abigail Hake Photography Provided

Most of us are finding an unlimited amount of time on our hands during these fairly uncertain times. While it can be a stressful time for many of us, especially parents, we will all get through it and have memories to last a lifetime. Let’s hope that these few survival tips can cut down on stress and also bring a few more smiles into your life while we all stay safe at home.

the walkways with some art. The best thing about chalk though is that it can go so many different directions…get creative! Draw up inspiring messages, create something giant that takes over entire driveways or cul-de-sacs, make up extra-large game boards, or even create art galleries! The possibilities are endless and remember, adults can have fun with chalk too. And, if you have a ton of chalk, share with your neighbors by leaving a piece on their doorstep and ask them to get in on the fun too!

3. Participate in a Challenge

1. Disney+ If you don’t have it, sign up now. It’s super affordable and gives you access to the entire Disney movie library, which you are going to need because the days are very, very long and screen time rules flew out the window weeks ago. Old movies are fun to share with your kids so maybe try to get them to sit down and watch Swiss Family Robinson (a personal fave yet I still can’t get my child to watch the whole thing) or hunker down and watch all the Star Wars one after another or have a Marvel movie marathon.

There are lots of social media and viral challenges out there and while I’m not a huge tech fan, the social aspect of it has given way to some really creative things happening. Maybe do a lip sync challenge video with your entire family, try the garage door challenge (if you are needing a drink and a great laugh), or participate in the plank or push up challenge. You can even come up with your own challenge if you are really feeling creative! Whatever you choose, make sure to nominate another family to try it after you do!

2. Chalk

4. One-on-One Time.

Time to start hoarding sidewalk chalk. As the weather begins to show more signs of spring, more people will be out walking soon and with limited paths available during this time, why not sass up

With us all having quite a few extra moments hanging at our homes these days, we are typically all up in each other’s business. But now is the time to make sure to carve out a little one-on-one time with

THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JUNE 2020 / thelakesmagazine.com

your loved ones if you can. About 15 minutes here and there can go a long way. Spend it snuggling in the morning before rolling out of bed if you have early risers, playing a video game, or going on a walk. It’s also important to keep in mind that as adults you might need to find some alone time too. It feels like there are really no breaks during this crazy time, so no judgment if that is time spent hiding in the bathroom.

5. Talent Shows We all have hidden talents, like knowing the entire rap portion of TLC’s Waterfalls song or spinning a basketball on our finger for way longer than normal. Whatever your hidden talent, it’s time to let that cat out of the bag and show off your skills! Gather your immediate family and each share your talents one by one in the living room or make it a family challenge and invite other families and friends to participate in a virtual event! By utilizing the amazing social tools out there like FaceTime or Zoom, the possibilities are endless!

6. Wine Delivery You are gonna need it. Pick a local winery and you will probably be happily surprised to find out they are delivering during this time! While I don’t encourage drinking in excess, the days can be really

quite emotionally draining and a cocktail hour once a week (or every day - you choose) isn’t going to hurt anyone! There are also quite a few Mexican restaurants selling their non-alcoholic margarita mix on their takeout menus now too. Who doesn’t need a Margarita Monday (or Tuesday & Wednesday too)? It’s ok, we get it. After this, we’ll all be drinking Ina Garten style, and if you don’t know what this is referring to, Google it. Remember, this is a special time we’ve been given to slow down and reconnect. Make sure to take it all in. Stay in bed a little longer, try to read that book you’ve been meaning to finish or try a new recipe you’ve been meaning to make. Whatever you do, make sure to check in on friends and family, especially those who are stuck home during this time alone. Some of you were maybe meant for these moments, but for others, this is a real challenge. Thankfully, we are able to still stay connected with technology. Whatever you do to get through this time staying safe at home, cherish it. Remember this too shall pass.

ome. Creating picturesque and cozy homes has been the purpose of Banfich Interiors for nearly 50 years. The business was started by Dale Fritz, the father of the current owners, in 1972 as The Red Carpet. “We started out in the carpet business.

People came in to buy carpeting and then they asked us to start handling furniture,” explains co-owner Allen Fritz. “It just kind of grew from there.”

consultations. Sometimes, a customer simply wants a room or a house done. Other times, redesigning a space proves to be a little more challenging.

They quickly developed a reputation for not only their products but also their unmatched customer service, a legacy that Dale’s children, Fritz and Marilyn FritzBanfich, have continued in the decades since they joined the family business.

For Banfich, who is the company’s leading designer, that’s when the job becomes fun. “Someone hands us a picture of an oil painting and says, ‘I want these to be my colors,’ or ‘I want these pieces of furniture.’

“Everyone who works here is very friendly and people-oriented,” Banfich says. “If there’s ever a problem, we send out our people that take care of that particular problem immediately. We just want to make people happy.” In 1996, the brother-sister team moved the business from Winamac to Plymouth, renaming it Banfich Interiors. By that time, they offered more than just the quality brand name furniture. They also offered complimentary interior design

We will go out and assess the situation, measure everything and draw it up,” she explains. “Then we suggest the furniture, not necessarily saying exactly what you need to buy, but giving a range of options and letting the client choose what they would like based on their original inspiration of color or space, or however you envisioned your project.” Although they offer this service, they recognize that not everyone needs a home makeover; some people just want a single piece of furniture.

“We are different because we can do an entire home concept or just a chair,” Banfich adds. “Whatever is needed. We have items in stock every day for pick-up or delivery.” Banfich Interiors offers a wide variety of products from the highest-ranked name brands. “We’re really fortunate to be able to have all six of the major bedding lines in the country, when most stores only have one or two,” Fritz says. Nonetheless, Banfich Interiors is devoted to remaining affordable. The showroom displays items that are $300 or less, including La-Z-Boy recliners and queensized mattresses. They also offer financing options. “We cover every budget,” Banfich says. They always keep an ear to the ground as far as the latest fashions are concerned. “That’s another thing that sets us apart — everything is current,” Banfich says. “Nothing is old and discontinued. You don’t have the frustration of shopping for something that’s not available. Everything is kept current by us and by our furniture representatives.” After moving to Plymouth, many furniture companies began contacting Banfich Interiors about selling their lines. La-Z-Boy was the first. “They didn’t have much representation in this area. They really wanted to be in Plymouth,” Fritz says. “So that pretty much started the ball rolling.” thelakesmagazine.com / JUNE 2020 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / 51

It didn’t take long before Banfich Interiors outgrew their location. So, they opened another showroom in Plymouth, Mattress Express, exclusively for mattresses and Ashley merchandise. “We have all of the major mattress brands,” Banfich says. They also sell medical furniture, like lift chairs and hospital beds. “We carry about 35 different lift chairs and it’s amazing. We got into it because people really wanted and had a need for it,” Fritz adds. A business is only as good as its staff, and Fritz and Banfich think they have one of the best. Their right-hand woman is Cindy Kinney, the office manager and an interior designer. “She’s such a super person, and she does a

great job with all our customers. She’s a very important part of the business, for sure,” Fritz says. Sharon Fritz is also an integral part of Banfich Interiors, who has been doing the accounting since the company started. “We could not get along without Sharon,” Banfich says. Their delivery team, comprised of George Christ, Greg Ballinger, and Allen Heist, is also dynamite and are well-known for their white-glove quality service. “Our deliveries won’t just arrive at your doorstep. We assemble, install and put it anywhere in your home that you want it,” Banfich says. “We’ll take anything out that you want to dispose of, just whatever the customer’s needs are. GARDEN VARIETY Ken Craig Community Garden Provides Local Produce and Educational Opportunities

Writer / Angela Cornell Photography Provided

During these uncertain times, many wouldbe vegetable gardeners are becoming willbe gardeners. However, excitement over the prospect of trying a new hobby can be accompanied by a lack of self-confidence, especially for those with no idea whether their thumb is green or black.

Community gardens are typically large plots tended by several families who share the harvest. The Ken Craig Community Garden in Knox is no exception. “Our mission is to provide a garden space for the community, and it’s also to teach people how to garden,” explains Rick Martin, head gardener. “It’s also to share. grow, we give away.” Martin first conceived the idea for the garden in 2015. “I was at a convention and a local garden leader from Porter County was speaking,” he says. “That night I went back to my hotel room and I kept waking up with this thought of starting a community garden. I went back to bed multiple times and kept waking up with this on my mind. I think it was divinely inspired.” After the conference, Martin and some others who shared the vision developed a plan for the garden. They decided to name it after Ken Craig, who passed away from a brain tumor a few years prior. “Anyone who knew him would know that he was a very giving person,” Martin says of Craig. “He believed that if someone asked for help, no matter what it was, if it was within your power and ability to do so, that you help. That is kind of our mission and our vision for the garden.” By early 2016, the Ken Craig Community Garden was a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and ready for its first growing season behind the Church of the Nazarene, where Martin serves as pastor. Since then, the concept for the garden has grown. As the organization’s leaders look forward to their fifth season, they have expanded from a simple vegetable garden to include fruit trees, a grape arbor, herbs, and even a pollinator garden with bees. And that’s only on the outside. The organization has a greenhouse that allows its growing season to begin sooner than usual, and a year-round hydroponics system donated by a local businessman.

“Our goal is really to grow all year round,” Martin says. Last fall and winter, the organization grew and gave away cold-weather crops such as lettuces. As a long-time gardener in his own right, Martin understands the importance of taking care of more than just the people thelakesmagazine.com / JUNE 2020 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / 57

who depend on the produce from the garden. He and his team take great care to be as ecologically and environmentally responsible as possible. “We plant heirloom, non-GMO varieties and we don’t use harsh chemicals,” Martin says. “We’re as organic as possible without the certification. We know that the roots are in the soil, and the soil absorbs whatever you put on it.” The number of volunteers who work alongside Martin and his team has grown, and they have all enjoyed the fruits of their labor. Without them, it would be impossible for the garden to thrive. Community residents are welcome to come and get produce from the garden, and families connected the local food pantries and Bella Vita Pregnancy Center have also benefitted. “Every Thursday evening, [Bella Vita] has a Purdue Extension person that comes in and teaches these young mothers and fathers how to cook,” Martin says. “We try to pick produce on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and I let Bella Vita know what we’re bringing. They contact Purdue Extension and say, ‘Hey, this is what we have,’ and that person can make a meal plan for that class.”

Ultimately, the Ken Craig Community Garden leaders help to feed the hungry and train inexperienced gardeners. “What I hope to see is that people would check us out - maybe they could be encouraged to have their own garden or start a community garden in their immediate community,” Martin says. The Ken Craig Community Garden is located at 1801 South Heaton Street in Knox. For more info, visit facebook. com/kencraigcommunitygarden.
