NOW SHOWING: FAMILY-OWNED MELODY DRIVE-IN THEATRE CELEBRATES 70 YEARS IN KNOX

The Melody Drive-in Theatre in Knox has been a staple for the community since its premiere in 1949. George Banta and Richard Hand were the original owners of the theatre. When it opened, it had one screen. In 1961, Banta and Hand sold the drive-in to Edward and Marguerite Heise, and it has remained in the family’s possession ever since. Nine years later, in 1970, current owners Fred and Louise Heise took over for Fred’s parents.

Owners Eric and Natalie Howard Writer / Mary Lowry Photographer / Jubilee Edgell

Four years ago, Eric Howard, owner of Bluebird Ag, was touring with musical stars like Janet Jackson, Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake for most days out of the year. After being in charge of logistics for 13 years, Howard decided that he had had enough of the fast-paced, Rock ’n’ Roll lifestyle. He and his wife, Natalie, were looking to settle down and start a family. Reflecting on their backgrounds, the couple was able to come up with a way to combine their respective passions and knowledge into a company — Bluebird Ag was created.

READY FOR FLIGHT BLUEBIRD AG PROVIDES UNIQUE DRONE CROP DUSTING SERVICES FOR NORTHWEST INDIANA

Howard grew up with a love for aviation. From a very young age, he developed an affinity for planes and for flying. Natalie grew up on a farm, and she had an appreciation for agriculture that Eric had never experienced for himself. After trying to figure out ways for Eric to come home

and stop touring while continuing to make money, they decided to open a business spraying crops three years ago. “I started flying when I was 13 years old,” Howard says. “My wife grew up on a farm, so we combined my love of airplanes and aviation and her farming background.”

Before

AFTER

JayH Construction, LLC The idea was developed four years ago, Howard says, but they were not able to start right away. So, they started by irrigating crops, spraying them with water from planes. Slowly, spraying crops with chemicals crept into their capabilities, and now, they have a form of innovation that is unrivaled in the United States. “We are the first crop-dusting operation to be approved for use of drones for aerial application in the United States of America,” Howard says.

Using drones for crop dusting is typically unheard of, but the method proves to be much more effective. Since the drones are smaller, they are able to get into smaller areas or areas that are harder to reach. They offer precision.

You can have a custom mini log cabin delivered right to your property like this starting at $25,000!

Besides the mere idea of using drones, the situation at Bluebird Ag proves to be unique in other ways. All of their drone pilots are also certified airplane pilots, all maintaining their aerial application license from the Office of Indiana State Chemist. Bluebird Ag has also insured all of its drones with the same insurance used for their airplanes. To get the idea started, the Howards began talks with a drone attorney. The attorney specializes in waivers from the Federal Aviation Administration. He had worked previously on getting the waivers in order for the drone light show that took place during Lady Gaga’s halftime performance at Super Bowl LI in 2015. Using the drones allows for a much more versatile and accurate spraying of crops.

“The drones are extremely effective on spraying weeds that are only in small spots in a large field,” Howard says. “Also, in right-of-ways or very hard to access locations. It’s very precise and doesn’t run over and damage the vegetation. It also works very well on precision-mosquito

spraying, for your residence or for a special event.” The care that is shown for the environment is something else that makes Bluebird Ag special. They utilize the drones to use far fewer chemicals and avoid spraying surrounding vegetation, which helps keep the surrounding environment chemical-free. Having a smaller impact on the surrounding environment ties into Howard’s favorite part of the business. “It’s the technology and getting to try new things, getting to help the environment by using fewer chemicals and helping customers with issues that have been harder to tackle prior to this,” he says. Howard’s decision four years ago to stop touring and instead spend more time at home has proven to be exactly what he’d hoped for. He and Natalie welcomed their first child into the world in late April. Bluebird Ag is open seven days a week, weather permitting, and they serve Northwest Indiana. If you have questions or if you would like to contact them to start spraying for you, you can give them a call at 219-863-4242 or visit them online at bluebirdagllc. com for more information. Bluebird AG is located at 7735 South US35 in Knox, Indiana. They have an additional location at 1060 E Division Road in Veedersburg, Indiana.

If you’re selling a 1967 Fairlane GT, make sure to let Mark Shell know. It’s one of his dream cars. Shell, owner of Mark’s Body Shop in Knox, grew up admiring the cars of almost everyone around him. His father collected classic cars, as did his friends and his brothers, so from a young age, Shell knew that he, too, would want to collect cars one day. Twenty-one years ago, he was able to begin buying cars of his own, and it has been a huge passion of his ever since. “What made me interested in collecting cars was that, growing up with my dad, he owned some older vehicles, and my older brothers and some friends of mine had several old cars. Being around classic cars like that always made me want to have some of them,” he says. His interest in restoring older cars piqued when he was 18 — his friend had an old car that Shell restored, and he fell in love with the work then. From there, he opened up his own shop in January of 1998. There, he does less regarding restoring classic cars and he focuses instead on collision repair. Despite the differences, he still loves his job and what he does. “Probably when I first got into the business, I was basically 18 years old, and I restored a car for a good friend of mine,” Shell says. “Even though I 16 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JULY 2019 / thelakesmagazine.com

mostly do collision repair, I’ve always enjoyed doing the restoration part in older cars.”

METAL ROOFING FOR YOUR HOME

Shell’s work restoring his own cars has been viewed far and wide, and he has attended plenty of car shows, from the Cavalcade of Wheels in South Bend, to shows in Pigeon Forge Tennessee. Shell has even attended the Ford Nationals show in Pennsylvania. Of course, they still participate in local shows. Currently, he owns about 20 cars. Most of them, he explains, are kept in a pole barn at his house. Some are restored, while others are not. Every once in a while, he brings one of his cars into the showroom at his shop, Shell’s Auto Body. Since he opened the business in 1998, Shell recognizes how important good, hard and loyal workers are to keep a business open. He cites them as some of the reason for the great success of the shop and the other reason is his family. “I’ve had good support from my family, too, because I work a lot of hours and it takes me away from a lot of things, but they’ve always been supportive,” he says. If you have been in an accident and are looking for proper collision repair, you can visit Mark’s Body Shop at 12 S Prettyman Street. You can also give them a call at 574772-7003 or visit them online at marksautobodycollisionrepair.com for more information.

Lara Latshaw, owner of Gordon’s Grooming in Plymouth, never expected to work as a pet groomer when she was in college, earning a degree in criminology. Her grandparents were the original owners of Gordon’s Grooming, back in the 1980s, and Latshaw spent her summers there working and helping out. After college, she realized that her heart was with the animals. Later on, after living in Florida for a number of years, she decided to come back to Indiana and reopen the salon. “My grandparents were groomers, and I grew up helping in their salon in the summer. When I was ready to move back to Indiana from Florida, it just made sense to move to Plymouth,” Latshaw says. “I

actually started grooming in college, when I was working on a degree in criminology. I finished my degree and realized that I wanted to work with cats and dogs. It was a great job that I’d had during school, and so I wanted to stick with it.” She continued her education, becoming a National Certified Master Groomer. This distinction is rare to find — Latshaw is one of six groomers in the state of Indiana. The other groomers that work in the salon are currently in the process of earning their certifications. Their education doesn’t stop with just the Master Groomer certifications, though: Gordon’s Grooming is the only salon in Northern Indiana that has earned the recognition of the S.A.F.E. certification, awarded by the American Kennel Club.

Latshaw has also been certified in Pet Tech CPR and First Aid. They also groom cats without sedation, which normally occurs when you take a cat to get groomed. “There is no regulation or licensing required to be a groomer. To ensure we can provide the best possible care for every pet, we focus heavily on continuing education. These goals are one of the reasons we took the AKC Safe Salon certification course. One example of something we learned from taking this course is that it’s important to have a disaster plan in place. There aren’t many salons owners who could tell you exactly what they would do if a fire broke out in the building they operate in or if there were a tornado warning. But at Gordon’s, we have the answer to that in writing in our Operations Manual.” Latshaw says.

thelakesmagazine.com / JULY 2019 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / 19

Owner Lara Latshaw

Since education is one of its biggest goals, Latshaw and her team host multiple grooming seminars at the salon throughout the year, bringing in groomers from out of town. She also has competed and won awards in pet grooming competitions all across the country. All that education and training has certainly paid off. The salon was recognized in the Best of Marshall County for 2019, and Latshaw was nominated for the Barkleigh Up and Coming Speaker of the Year in 2015. Even with the awards, recognition, and education, Latshaw’s favorite part of the business is still working with the pets and giving back to the community. “As a business owner, it’s great to be able to provide jobs for other people ... As for being a groomer, working with dogs that require special care is very rewarding.” she says.

Giving back doesn’t come just from being able to provide jobs, though. Latshaw makes sure to contribute substantially to the community through volunteering with the animal shelter, making the pets that come in clean and ready to adopt; donating to local fundraisers; and providing things like gift certificates for local events. “We’re the only salon in town that helps with the shelter,” she explains. “I like trying to support the community. We provide a lot of gift certificates for the car show in town. We try to help with local fundraisers and things like that, too.” You can contact Gordon’s Grooming on their website, gordonspetgrooming.com or you can call them at 574-612-3524. CUSTOMER FAVORITES Regular guests at The Brass Rail have their favorites. “If you would ask most customers what The Brass Rail is known for, they would say our fish,” Langdon says. “We sell about 200 pounds per week.” Langdon stresses that because so many people love their fish, every Thursday evening and Friday at lunch, they have “All You Can Eat Fish.” The Brass Rail also has other big sellers on their menu. “Many people will tell you their favorite menu item is our half-pound, hand-parried burgers,” Langdon says. “My personal favorite, that Michelle also likes, would have to be our Chicken Drummies and hot wings appetizers. That is our dinner every Friday night. Besides that, our second favorite is the Artichoke Salmon. There is just something about that artichoke dip we love.” The Brass Rail also has some great daily specials. “Every Monday, we have a pulled pork, fries & slaw, for only $7,” Langdon says. “On Tuesday, we sell our ever -popular $7 half-pound, burger and fries. Nancy Cox, director of the Marshall County Humane Society, has always had a love for animals. She started working at the Humane Society 31 years ago after her daughter went off to kindergarten. After noticing an ad in the paper looking for part-time help, Nancy applied and was hired immediately. “My daughter went to kindergarten, so I thought ‘What am I gonna do with myself?’ I just always have to have something to do, and I saw an ad in the paper that they needed part-time kennel help, and they hired me on the spot,” she says. “The first couple weeks I worked part-time, and then I’ve been full-time ever since. I was on-call for Animal Control, and I worked the kennels every day. I enjoyed animals so much I didn’t even realize how much time I spent here.” As Nancy says, her work is not cuddling with dogs and cats all day – she works to find animals their forever homes, which is one of the most rewarding parts for her. The other most rewarding part, she notes, is when animals who are initially shy or afraid come around to the people trying to help them. “Sometimes, we get animals that are so fearful and so afraid of people and have been so badly abused. It can take us days to catch them because they’re out running, and when we finally get them, that’s the most rewarding,” she says. “We have so many who are abandoned. They get unsocialized very quickly.” Being able to catch and care for up to 71 animals total is not a cheap endeavor, though, so the Humane Society mainly relies on donations from the public to keep itself running. They host fundraisers throughout the year: the next event will be a Dash and Splash, held in Culver along the beach on Aug. 3, 2019. Participants are invited to walk their dogs along the trails back to Culver Academies, then come back

L to R: Owners Louise & Fred Heise, and Freddy and Natalie Heise

Writer / Mary Lowry Photographer / Jayme Goetz

The Melody Drive-in Theatre in Knox has been a staple for the community since its premiere in 1949. George Banta and Richard Hand were the original owners of the theatre. When it opened, it had one screen. In 1961, Banta and Hand sold the drive-in to Edward and Marguerite Heise, and it has remained in the family’s possession ever since. Nine years later, in 1970, current owners Fred and Louise Heise took over for Fred’s parents. “I grew up in the business,” Fred explains. “I was 13 or 14 when my dad purchased it, and when I was ready to be married to my wife, my dad had made an offer to us. And so I decided that was a thing we wanted to do.” Today, their son, Fred, and his wife Natalie are a part of the management team for the drive-in. “One day, they’ll take over and continue the tradition,” Fred says proudly. Since taking over, Fred and Louise have made some changes. In 1995, they added in a second lot and now have two screens to show movies on. In 2013, they changed from showing motion picture films to a digital system for sound and projection. Soon after adding the digital system, though, a tornado struck the area, taking down the drive-in’s main screen. “On May 31, 2013, a tornado knocked our main screen down, and we had so many family and friends that came in and helped,” Fred says. “We opened back up on July 2, and we had one of our largest weeks ever in the drive-in. That showed that we have the greatest moviegoers on earth.” It was only natural that the community banded together to support the drive-in. The theatre is considered a tradition for families and vacationers alike. People are drawn to it for its atmosphere. It acts as a place for good, wholesome, family fun. They show mostly family movies but that is not the only thing that creates the environment. There is an area on the property for people to play outside. It is close to the beach, so people can enjoy time there. The long history of the drive-in being family-owned surely affects people. They know it, and have known it, to be a place to come and have fun, and the Heise family knows that. “It’s a good place for families and couples to come out and enjoy a movie and there’s not a whole lot of drive-in theaters left in America,” he says. “It’s a place for families to come out and enjoy themselves. They play in the yard, and we offer

good food. It’s a good place for people from all over, plus, with the lake here, [there are] many vacationers, so it’s a great outlet for folks. It’s not only a form of entertainment, but people can come out and enjoy themselves, and it’s an experience.” The rarity of a drive-in today is part of what adds charm to the theaters today. At one point in American history, there were more than 4,000 drive-ins registered. Today, there are a little more than 300. There are six states today that have no driveins anywhere. Indiana is fortunate enough to have 18. Besides the family atmosphere and the charm that comes with a drivein, the food within the concession stand helps to bring people back, too. Recognized for their breadsticks, Melody Drive-In has a huge variety of food for customers to choose from. “Our biggest seller is breadsticks, believe it or not,” Fred says. “We’re known far and wide for our breadsticks, and we also sell hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, french fries and, of course, popcorn. We just serve good food. It’s made to order, and it’s gone over well here.”

When asked about one of the most memorable moments, Fred goes back to when the tornado took out one of their screens. He explains how much the support of the community meant in their time of need. “We were so grateful for [our moviegoers],” he says.

WE JUST SERVE GOOD FOOD. IT’S MADE TO ORDER, AND IT’S GONE OVER WELL HERE. Fred and Louise show that gratefulness for the community through giving back. They occasionally give free tickets to organizations to include in fundraisers for those in need, in addition to being involved in organizations like Right to Life. Beginning in 1995, on Sunday mornings, area Lutheran churches use the drive-in to host services. Melody Drive-In Theatre is open in the summer six days a week. They are closed on Tuesday evenings. Their box office typically opens at 7:00 pm CST on Friday and Saturday nights, and it opens at 7:30 pm CST every other night they are open. The start time of the movie relies on the sunlight, Fred explains, so there is no set time. “The sun is our clock,” Fred says. “We can’t start until dusk.” You can visit the Melody Drive-In Theatre at 7705 S. US 35 in Knox. You can also visit them online at melodydrivein.com, or you can give them a call at 574-772-2042 for a recording of the movies playing. thelakesmagazine.com / JULY 2019 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / 35

STARKE COUNTY JUSTICE CENTER F.A.R.M. PROGRAM HELPS INMATES GROW TOWARD RECOVERY Writer / Matt Keating . Photographer / Jubilee Edgell

S

tarke County Sheriff Bill Dulin says the Starke County F.A.R.M. (Foster a Recovery Mentality) program was started in 2016 to address addiction issues and also start the recovery process for substance abusers in Starke County. “We started our program about four and a half years ago in our new Starke County Justice Center as a way to put our inmates to work on something positive,” Dulin says. “We have 23 acres of land where the inmates can grow vegetable plants and flowers that can be sold later.” The F.A.R.M. Program also gives the inmates a goal to work towards. “It helps the inmates pass the time, helps them be productive and it also helps them with a lot of behavior issues,” Dulin says. Dulin adds that the size of the garden has continued to grow substantially. “A lot of our jail staff have also been able to get the garden into the great shape it is in now,” Dulin says. “Our Therapeutic Community Coordinator and Jail Warden Phil Cherry have really worked hard to make the program a success. He started it and has really made it grow with the inmates and our staff.”

Custom crafted outdoor furniture and accessories

Dulin notes that the F.A.R.M. program consists of gated and un-gated gardens plus a nearby greenhouse.

High Quality Materials Satisfaction Guaranteed

The inmates use the gardens and the greenhouse to grow a large variety of items.

“They include flowers, spices, potatoes and strawberries,” Dulin says. “The inmates also grow a lot of vegetables, including radishes, cabbages, onions and pumpkins.”

right to work in the garden. “We choose inmates who have demonstrated good behavior,” Dulin says. “It’s just one of the behavior-based programs we have here. We also have an incustody substance class.”

FARM STAND Dulin says inmates with the F.A.R.M. program started a farm stand last year in front of the jail to sell the produce and goods that trustees grew. “The inmates also have a wood shop where they are able to make furniture and wood pallet art to sell,” Dulin adds. “The pallets have different designs on them such as cartoon characters and flowers.” During the summer the farm stand is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Funds raised from the farm stand go back into the Justice Center to fund other Therapeutic Community programs, such as the Nurturing Fathers class, and substance abuse recovery program,” Dulin says.

WINTER PROJECTS The inmates also stay busy during the colder months. “They make Christmas wreaths in November and December,” Dulin says. “The wreaths go to veterans, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)s.” Cold weather items such as onions and potatoes can also be planted. The greenhouse is also used more in the winter. “Tomatoes, strawberries, spices, cabbage and some flowers can also be grown during the winter,” Dulin adds. Dulin says the greenhouse uses an aquaponics system that utilizes fish waste as fertilizer. The system speeds up the growing process. During the winter, there is also a lot of cold weather and holiday-themed art that is created by the inmates.

ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT Dulin believes the best part of the program is that it gives inmates the opportunity to get outside and work in a garden. thelakesmagazine.com / JULY 2019 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / 41

It has also led to other good things such as community events, painting projects and vocational programs. Some of the programs teach basic woodworking and math skills. “There is also a substance abuse class that is offered,” Dulin says. “This whole program gives people work they can get involved with that benefits other people. It helps people who have struggled with substance abuse and gives them a way to be outside as part of their recovery process.” It also gives inmates the chance to use what they have learned to help them find a job after they are released. “Our goal with all of the programs is to give the inmates the chance to learn skills they can use to help them get back in the community and be productive,” Dulin says.

King feels that giving back to the community through donations is extremely important. Once a year, a few weeks before Christmas, the company holds a barbecue to help raise money to buy presents for underprivileged children. Beyond that, they try to donate as much as they can every year while working on projects. “We love to give back to the community — donating as much material as I can, to people who wouldn’t necessarily be able to afford something nicer,” King adds.

Frank Rhoades, owner of Cottage Watchman, believes having solid relationships with customers is the key to a company’s long-term success.

Rhoades and his staff have followed that philosophy since the family-owned business started in 1977.

“We are still operating Cottage Watchman on the same family farm,” Rhoades says. “The office we are currently in used to be a chicken coop building many years “We work really hard to make sure our ago. The security system business started customers are taken care of,” Rhoades says. when I was selling pressure washers and “We have always tried to make sure they are generators to farmers back in the 1970s. treated fairly, and that they are happy with us.” One of my customers asked me three times

if I could work on some alarms he had and fix them. He wanted me to repair them and put them in some barns he had. I didn’t know very much about alarms back then, but I learned fast.” Rhoades even worked on the security messages for his customers. “I pre-recorded messages on eight track cartridges, and told farmers their power was going out,” Rhoades says.

“OUR GOAL IS STILL TO MAKE THE CUSTOMER HAPPY. UNTIL I TAKE CARE OF THE CUSTOMER I HAVE NOW, I DON’T DESERVE THE SECOND ONE.” Cottage Watchman started getting more commercial work in the 1980s and increased their amount of business. “In 1983, I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and had to hire a kid to do a lot of the physical work with our security systems,” he says. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare condition in which your immune system attacks your nerves, leading to muscle weakness, and even paralysis. The illness didn’t stop Rhoades. He got better, and later in the 1990s, he started working with builders’ associations, and started doing more residential work, while still expanding the company’s commercial security business. His son, Jason, later took over the business. Rhoades says he has done an excellent job. “I’m still involved in Cottage Watchman,” Rhoades says. “Our goal is still to make the customer happy. Until I take care of the customer I have now, I don’t deserve the second one.” Rhoades noted that their “goal is to provide customer satisfaction through meeting the customer’s specific needs and taking care of the customer after the sale.” With their commercial clients, Cottage Watchman has a “Commercial Watchman” division, thelakesmagazine.com / JULY 2019 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / 49

Dr. Walter Fritz

GROWING UP PRE-MEDICINE LOCAL PHYSICIAN CELEBRATES 45 YEARS DEDICATED TO MEDICINE Writer / Mary Lowry Photography Provided

Dr. Walter Fritz, a physician at the Knox Winamac Community Health Center, decided he wanted to be a doctor while he was sitting in a study hall in high school. He made the decision without any particular source of inspiration. He thought about it, and later could not get the idea out of his

head. He decided that he wanted to be a family physician, specifically. Growing up in New Jersey, his high school had a club for those interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. Through that club, students were able to learn more about surrounding medical schools. “Our school had an active pre-medical club, and we made a number of field trips

to medical schools, so we got a pretty good exposure to the medical school route, he says. He moved from New Jersey to attend Valparaiso University for an undergraduate degree, and later went to Wake Forest in North Carolina. From there, he stayed in the Salem, North Carolina area for four years before coming back to Indiana for his three-

year-long residency program, which he completed at Memorial Hospital of South Bend. Since then, he opened his own practice in the Knox area, where he has been practicing medicine continuously since 1974. Seven years ago, his practice was merged with the practice he is currently at: Knox Winamac Community Health Center. The health center provides a variety of services for their patients, including primary and preventive care; wellness, Department of Transportation (DOT), and sports physicals; laboratory services; vaccines for children; and behavioral health services. Even after being in the same business for 45 years, Dr. Fritz loves what he does. His favorite part is his patients and getting to meet people and help them. “My favorite part is the opportunity to interact with a wide variety of patients, not just giving them a willing ear to listen, but to also be able to, through training and experience, to help give them answers or assistance with the problems they encounter in life, he says. If you have questions or would like to schedule an appointment at the Knox Winamac Community Health Center, you can visit them at 1002 S. Edgewood Drive in Knox. You can also call them at 574-772-6030, send them an email at kwchc@kwchc.net or visit them online at kwchc.net. They are open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

SERVES UP FUN, FAMILY ENVIRONMENT

Frozen yogurt isn’t the only sweet thing at Sweet Swirlz, located in Plymouth. Faith Gamble opened the shop in March 2017 as a place for families to go and spend time together. Its family atmosphere is truly what sets the shop apart from others in the area. “I would say I saw the need for a family, fun environment where kids can just be kids. There wasn’t a place to take your kids and have a little downtime,” Gamble says. The community, while a large reason behind the opening of the shop, was not her only motivation. Gamble is a single mother to three young men — Cody, Parker, and Jayden (ages 21, 18, and 13). As she explains, her family is extremely important to her. Jayden, who has special needs, gets to come to work with her every day. To Gamble, this is one of the best parts of owning her own business. “As the mom of a special needs kid, it allows me to take care of him, and it gives me the flexibility to take him to doctor’s appointments, therapy, and things like that, so I can leave and come back to work later,” she says.

Jayden has plenty of fun, too. Despite his being nonverbal, he still gets to interact with customers and other kids. This interaction is special for Gamble, too. She sees her son getting to have opportunities that not many people in Jayden’s position have.

“From owning the shop, when you see him smile, you’ll see him wave to them, and nine out of 10 times, they’ll walk up to the table. The other kids learning that it’s okay to be different, that right there shows me that it’s worthwhile. A lot of kids like him don’t get that interaction like he does. They’re put in a special need’s classroom, or they get kept at home. It lets other kids see that he smiles the same — we all smile the same, we all love the same.”

That love is part of what draws in customers. People appreciate the family-oriented atmosphere, in addition to the variety of flavors offered. Sweet Swirlz offers a total combination of 18 flavors. There are six machines with 12 flavors, but you can mix each machine’s flavors to get something different. They always carry vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, cheesecake, salted caramel, and cotton candy, as well as two non-dairy flavors. The non-dairy flavors change regularly, as do the four flavors. As far as toppings, there are over 50 choices. “We have anything from boba to fresh fruit, canned fruit, gummies, and any kind of chocolate you can imagine. You name it, we have it,” Gamble says. If you would like to try out Sweet Swirlz for yourself, you can visit them at 2868 Miller Drive in Plymouth or you can give them a call at 574-9353220. They are open Monday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. thelakesmagazine.com / JULY 2019 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / 59

Writer / Julie Yates

The popular series, Lake Front Bargain Hunt on Home and Garden Television (HGTV), is known for its vivid visuals of lake life and voice-overs describing the joys of the lifestyle. After mentioning morning swims, afternoon fishing and sunset sail boating, the narrator poses this thought, “Lake front living; it’s only for the rich – or so you thought!” Each episode highlights a regional lake along with buyers on a budget who are looking for their dream lake home. Rhonda Hurford, a realtor for Collins and Company Realtors at its Koontz Lake office, knows the pleasures of lake life firsthand. Having grown up on Koontz Lake, she is a natural at matching buyers with lake cottages that perfectly fit their needs. She never imagined that she would be featured as the realtor in a July 2017 episode of Lake Front Bargain Hunt. Hurford says, “HGTV put a call out to different reality companies, such as Collins and Company Realtors, that market lake homes. They are always looking for new areas to feature. People in the office kept telling me I should contact them and I ignored it several times. Finally, I submitted to them and I was very surprised when they contacted me!”

Since 1860 the citizens of Rochester Indiana have had a Pharmacy at this same location. Harry Webb’s Pharmacy is well known as a professional pharmacy with a hometown touch. “Our patients have many different needs and we strive to know our patients and tailor our services to effectively meet those needs.”

The pharmacy is a treasure and special destination to find Boutique Style Gifts, Gourmet Chocolates, Kitchen Textiles & Gifts, Essential Oils, the Very best CBD oil, Melissa & Doug Wooden Toys, Greeting Cards, Women’s Accessories, Home & Lake House Decor.

That initial communication from HGTV led to multiple interviews over the phone and Skype with both Hurford and her clients. Koontz Lake appealed to both the buyers and HGTV since it is within two hours of many Chicago suburbs. Another aspect that mattered was the budget of the couple Hurford was working with. Their wish to find a lake home under $399,000 was a good fit for the show.

“The buyers were awesome to work with,” Hurford says. “They were in their mid-forties with three teenage girls and wanted a second home just to come play at the lake.” Hurtford says she’d never done anything like the show before.

“My clothing had to be approved. The crew looked at six outfits I brought, and they picked three or four for me to wear,” says Hurford. “It took about four days to film but a lot of that was waiting around time while they filmed the buyers by themselves.” In the end, the clients picked the fourth home Hurford showed them. Since they were not entirely sold on what she offered to them prior, she reached out to a friend who had just entirely renovated his lake house. When asked if he would consider selling it, he agreed. The buyers fell in love with it and the sale was made. “The day it aired we had a ‘reveal’ party for friends and neighbors. It was so fun
