WELL COVERED Tate Insurance Agency Values Integrity and Client Education Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Lana King
Sometimes who you know makes a difference. At least that has been true for Enid Tate, an agent for American National Insurance whose office is on Main Street in Rochester. Tate Insurance Agency opened in 2019. American National Insurance is the only company Tate represents, and she offers plenty of services to help her neighbors with insurance needs including auto, life and homeowner’s, as well as renter’s, business, farm and specialty coverage. Tate, whose first name references the place in Oklahoma where she was born, moved to Rochester in 1975 with her family. She graduated from high school there and ran a successful business, Enid’s Cleaning Service, for 27 years. Tate believes her familiarity with the area and its people gives her an edge over other agencies. “It is that face-to-face relationship you have with those you recognize,” Tate says. “These are people you say hi to on the street.” Her relationship with her neighbors also makes her a better insurance agent. For her clients, that relationship means they can come to her with questions and know that she’ll tell them the truth. “If I had been dishonest when running my cleaning service, it would have gotten around,” Tate says. “There is a level of trust that comes with being familiar with a person. I want to sell with integrity and be truthful.” 6 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / thelakesmagazine.com

Tate sees her role as one of education. She engages in honest talk with her clients, looking at the insurance they have and what they don’t have. She measures this against what could happen and how clients could protect themselves. “I work with clients and educate them,” Tate says. “We look at what they need and what they don’t need.” While car and home insurance is standard for many people, the protection of a customer’s assets may go well beyond such coverage. For example, Tate suggests landlords require their tenants to take out a renter’s policy. This not only protects the tenant who stands to lose all they own in a fire or other occurrence, but also the landlord if the tenant causes damage to the property. Some situations are not covered under certain liability policies. “I am not a high-pressure salesperson,” Tate says. “I don’t like being sold to that way. I

prefer an honest talk.” Tate’s journey into the insurance business has been a second career for the former small-business owner. When she retired from her cleaning business, she wasn’t content. “I did not retire well,” she says. “I got bored.” This prompted her to take a customer service job with a local insurance agency. “I never dreamed I would go any further in the insurance business,” Tate says. She credits her former boss for giving her the confidence to accept the offer that came her way from American National. He encouraged her and was there to offer advice and direction. “He made the [insurance] experience pleasurable for me,” Tate says of her former boss.
Tate says people sometimes have misconceptions about insurance. They may know they need it and know it can be expensive, and the latter is the complaint she hears most often.
works well for those she meets in the community. Tate prefers honest talk, and an equal exchange between herself and her clients. In the end, that is her formula for succeeding in the insurance business.
“People think that we as agents have control over what prices we charge,” Tate says. “We have no control as agents.”
Tate Insurance Agency is located at 826 Main Street in Rochester. Contact Tate at 574-223-7542 or at insurancerochester@ gmail.com.
She likens shopping for insurance to shopping for a car. The client reviews a list of what is needed or wanted, and the list determines the cost. For those shopping for insurance, Tate suggests asking questions. Understanding what is being offered and why it is needed can help people make the right decisions. Looking at the complete picture also helps to ensure that each client has what they need to mitigate losses from accidents, natural disasters or other occurrences. This is why Tate believes her approach

aving operated an auto service center for 15 years, and having worked in the auto industry for nearly 25, Leonard Mast has a refreshingly simple answer for what keeps him motivated to be the best he can be in his chosen profession.

“I love solving problems,” he says. “Any mechanic that’s successful loves solving problems. It’s not fun for a customer to have a breakdown, but we love solving the problem and I think that’s what drives us.” Born and raised in the Etna Green area, Mast was tinkering with automobiles on his family’s dairy farm at a very young age. “As a little kid I would tear stuff apart and seldom get it back together,” Mast says laughing. “I found out early on that I liked digging into stuff and trying to find out what was going on and solving the problem or issue.” It didn’t take long for a young Mast to begin cultivating a dream of one day owning his own auto service shop.

“When I was on the dairy farm, I did a lot of diesel rebuilds for my dad, and that’s really how I started out,” he says. “When you start out learning by doing like I did, I think that’s a really good foundation for an auto education if you will. Since then, I’ve done everything from home automotive courses to night school, and our training at the service center is ongoing throughout the year.” Prior to officially opening Mast Service Center in Etna Green, Mast worked for an auto fleet company for nine years, troubleshooting and repairing trucks, trailers, forklifts and other equipment. During that time, he slowly began accumulating a list of clients who would request service on their automobiles, and eventually, Mast got the itch to strike out on his own. “By around 2005, I had a client base of people who wanted me to work on issues they had, and since I had that nine years of
good experience, I stepped out and started doing it on my own,” Mast says. “We started out small and it was just me and one other guy, and by 2009 we branched out to a second location. After that, we came full circle and went back to just one location at the beginning of 2019. We built our facility to be able to bring all of our employees together and do all of our work under one roof.” Mast Service Center offers both fleet and general auto service, with a current staff of 12. The six bays on the facility’s east side are dedicated to general automotive service for cars, trucks and vans - including service for brakes, air conditioning, oil and filter changes, alignments, transmissions and more, and the area on the building’s opposite side is devoted to fleet service. The center offers a pickup and drop-off service for local passenger vehicles.
Mast says the biggest challenge for servicing fleets is completing repairs as quickly as possible.
electrical issues. We cover the whole vehicle everything except body repair.” Mast adds that staying informed on, and equipped with, the most optimal technology for servicing a wide range of vehicles presents another ongoing challenge.
“With fleets, somebody’s making money with their vehicles and they want it to be a fast repair process,” he says. “Being able to service that vehicle and repair it in a timely fashion is what those customers really want. We do everything on fleets from suspension to transmission. We have the software to be able to take care of any computer issues or

vehicle information,” he says. “They say most automotive shops and after-market shops are somewhere around $150,000 behind in equipment and technology.” Mast says the key to his company’s steady growth over the past 15 years has been an unyielding focus on customer care, as well as a high priority on valuing each and every employee. “Other than in 2013, we’ve had growth every year and we continue to grow,” he says. “We do our best to take care of everybody that comes in. We try to be a blessing to our community and a blessing to our employees. I believe growth will always continue if you keep that in mind. WAYS TO CELEBRATE
HALLOWEEN WHILE SOCIAL DISTANCING GO OVER THE TOP DECORATING YOUR YARD Nothing excites kids like seeing huge yard holiday displays. We have done a skeleton beach display and a pirate battle recently and have neighbor kids stoping and loving it!
COSTUME FASHION SHOW
Just because there aren’t Halloween parties this year doesn’t mean you can’t dress up! Use it as an excuse to bust out some old costumes, too, for a full fashion show! Take photos or videos for your kids to re-watch and share.
REVERSE TRICK OR TREAT
This idea requires a bit of coordination by neighbors, but you could have kids set up at the end of their driveways and have adults or older teens drive around and throw candy like it’s a parade!
HALLOWEEN MOVIE MARATHON
Whether you like silly or scary, there are tons of Halloween movies! How about watching one a night leading up to October 31? This is an easy way to make the whole week feel special!
PARTY WITH YOUR BUBBLE
If you have been quarantining in a “bubble” or with a small group of other families that you trust, consider having a small party with them.
CANDY HUNT
Set up a candy hunt in your yard or home – just like Easter!
ICE CREAM SUNDAES FOR DINNER
You can buy your own candy, but it’s not that exciting to just eat candy out of the bag. Consider leaning into the sweet tooth tradition of the evening and serve ice cream and candy for dinner!
CRAFT AT HOME
Crafts are a great way to get festive. You can do these crafts on Halloween, or better yet, start them earlier in the month so they can double as decor inside your home!
MAKE SPECIAL TREATS
Every holiday is better when you make special baked goods and other fun treats to go along with the theme! Here are some great ideas for Halloween treats!

Cambe Carts Provides Golf Cart Sales and Comprehensive Service Writer / Angela Cornell Photography Provided
THE LAKES MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / thelakesmagazine.com
T
here are few vehicle purchases that can qualify exclusively as recreational. That’s one of the main things that sets Cambe Carts apart from other businesses. “It’s kind of cool to deal with something that people are excited to buy,” says Owner Jeff Cambe. “A golf cart is a toy to everybody, and toys are more fun to sell.” For Cambe, the opportunity to move from car to golf cart sales was somewhat unexpected. At the time, the car dealership he was working for was interested in buying some golf carts to make the large lot easier to traverse. “I started looking around for golf carts and started realizing that there weren’t a lot of them available in the marketplace,” he says. “You had to go up all the way to Michigan to buy one.” It didn’t take much marketing research for Cambe, who already owned JC Motorsports, to realize it would be a shrewd move to add golf carts to his sales repertoire. Thanks to area lakes and campgrounds, the business was doing so well that Cambe, along with his wife Sherri, decided to diversify the business even more by buying the Knox Chevrolet dealership in 2003. “When we moved to Knox with the golf cart business, it just took off,” he says. “It’s been a tremendous business for us. It’s been good and golf carts are different from anything else I’ve ever done.” As the only golf cart dealership in the area, Cambe keeps a wide variety of E-ZGO carts stocked onsite so he and his

sales staff can match each customer to the best golf cart for their needs. “We try to qualify and figure out what exactly it is that they’re looking for,” Cambe says. “We try to get them through the door and show them what we have.” Delivery and local financing options are available for those who want it. Gas and electric carts are available, depending on the customer’s intended use.
“The person who likes the electric likes that it’s quiet and smooth,” Cambe says. “The downside to them is you need to take care of the battery. A new one on a full charge will go approximately 30 to 35 miles. Say we get someone who owns a farm and he wants to go through his fields and stuff, to where he’ll be on it all day. Then we’ll probably recommend a gas cart. On the new side, the gas ones seem to be more desirable. Everybody likes the gas golf carts.”
Cambe also offers pre-owned options, with a current selection that is smaller than most years due to the coronavirus pandemic. “[The pandemic] affected our business this year in more ways than one,” he says. “It seemed like the sales of golf carts were stronger this year. Everyone I talk to in the outdoor activities market seems to have done very well this summer.” Cambe and his team offer in-house service and parts.

think they realize how much they would use it,” he says. “I use mine even during the wintertime quite a bit for different things I do. You can use them for yard work. Most of them have back seats that will flip over and turn into a little flatbed for picking up sticks or things like that. There are so many uses for them.” Cambe’s favorite part of the job is being there for his customers and providing for their entertainment desires.
“For most people, they get a lot of enjoyment out of it, and I’m right there with them,” he says. “Nothing is more relaxing to me.” Fall is typically an excellent time to get a good deal at Cambe Carts. There are many words that can describe Amish-made furniture. Handcrafted. Eye catching. Durable. Elegant. Heirloom material. The list goes on. “A lot of these [furniture pieces] are locally made,” Vern Weaver says. “We also buy from small workshops located through the midwest. We pick up unfinished furniture then bring it back and finish it here. It’s all U.S.A.-made stuff. It’s not like it’s coming out of a box somewhere.” To ensure the durability of the products, most of the merchandise is made from hardwoods like cherry, oak, maple and walnut. With the wide variety of stains and paints available in the workroom, there are literally hundreds of color combinations to choose from. When a customer doesn’t know what they want, the staff is eager to help. “Most people come in and they don’t know what they’re looking for,” Weaver says. “They might want a new table, but they don’t have a style in mind. If they come in and they see a style that we have, then we can customize that style. That’s our niche. That’s what people come in here for - hand-built furniture that they can customize however they want.”
Providing customizable Amish furniture isn’t the only service that Weaver and his staff offer. They also refinish and repair furniture. “We fix furniture that we don’t sell,” Weaver says. “We do that quite a bit. We do a lot of color matching as well. We have people come in all the time who maybe have a table that they like, but they’re looking for new chairs. They’ll bring in a table leaf and we’ll match the chairs to the table.” Weaver and his team stay up to date on the latest home furnishing fashions as well. “Right now what’s in is the rustic urban look, like maybe a live-edge top with a metal base,” Weaver says.

Baldwin And Company Owner Talks About Client-First Approach Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
For many people, money is a subject of contention. Budgeting is stressful, financial planning is a difficult field to navigate, finding the right insurance policy can be a nightmare and don’t get me started on taxes. Fortunately, accountant Barry Baldwin, E.A., the owner of Baldwin And Company, specializes in making his clients’ lives easier by being a onestop-shop for all things relating to money, whether that’s with taxes, business consulting, bookkeeping, budgeting and a dozen other services. Over a thousand people across the nation appreciate Baldwin’s services. His clients span the demographic gamete from corporations, small businesses and not-for-profit organizations to individuals of all ages and economic status. Each one is treated like royalty, something that Baldwin contributes to his wife’s influence. “[Linda] is the business development for Baldwin And Company, which she is responsible for about all the business we have in Rochester — getting those accounts and keeping them. She also does that function for our clients,” Baldwin says. “I do the numbers, she does the people part of it.” Baldwin’s dad, Wayne, the firm’s founder, is also still involved in the business. “He is 82 years old and he works ‘semi’ full time. He comes and goes as he pleases and still sharp as a tack,” Barry says.

For the second-generation owner, it’s a blessing to be able to work with his primary influencer. “I’m really blessed and I know it,” he says. “He’s the one who taught me and inspired me. We just reversed roles. Now I have all the headaches and the problems and he comes in, does his job, and leaves. He likes it that way and I do, too.” One of Baldwin’s passions is for small business advocacy. “We focus on keeping our clients in business, keeping them profitable,” he adds. This is evident in the exclusive services that are offered by Baldwin And Company, like the Business 911 Plan, a program designed to help new and struggling businesses. “We basically live with them for about a week and come up with answers and identify problems,” Baldwin says. “It’s been very successful.” Another way they advocate for small businesses is through their complimentary referral network, which is exclusively available to Baldwin’s clientele. “We truly support our clients,” Baldwin says. “We’re not going to

refer anyone that’s not good and people know that.” The referral network includes businesses from all over the nation. “When we sign on a new client, we let them know that we are there to help,” Baldwin adds. “If they need a contractor, we know 10 of them that are really good. If you want a good place to eat, we know 20 that are really good. If you need your horse trained or a veterinarian, we know one. We have all their business cards at our office and if they are needing something, we can say, ‘Here you go. This is who we recommend.’” Baldwin also offers many services for individuals. One is the We Care Concierge. “We like to say that this is the personal finance division,” Baldwin says. The services offered in this program are many and vary, depending on the needs of the clients. They manage budgets, balance checkbooks, pay bills, negotiate with creditors and collectors, work with personal banking options and more.
“We do it for a lot of people, like truck drivers who just don’t have time to keep their own personal books and pay their bills,” Baldwin says. “We have wealthy people who just don’t like doing it and elderly people who were getting taken advantage of.” From beginning to end, Baldwin And Company is there for its clients. “My favorite part of this job is helping people in any way that I possibly can,” he says. “The interactions, the personal relationships are the most rewarding for us. Right behind that, it is very satisfying to know that I can provide a good service at a fair price to actually help people.” To schedule an appointment to get your free new client consultation, visit Baldwin And Company at their Rochester office at 814 Main St. or call them at (574) 223-2454. CLEARVIEW ROUTING QUALITY IS PARAMOUNT FOR SHIPSHEWANABASED COMPANY Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Daryl and Earl Hershberger, co-owners of Clearview Routing, LLC in Shipshewana, are known for doing a variety of high-quality work. “We are a family-owned and -operated business that does a variety of things,” Daryl says. “We use a three-axis CNC machine to cut parts for ourselves, and also parts for
other businesses. Some of the things we manufacture are polymer buggy parts and polycarbonate windshields.” Three-axis CNC machining is one of the most popular and widely used processes, and it has helped Daryl and Earl expand their business. Daryl says Clearview Routing is known for its excellent product manufacturing. “Among the products we manufacture for other people is acrylic cashier shields,” Daryl says. “To build these, we have the ability to bend the acrylic.” Making high-quality signs is another popular service offered by Clearview Routing.
THE LAKES MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / thelakesmagazine.com
“We also make signs using polymer sheet that is two-colored,” Daryl says. “We route through the outside skin to expose the core color. These signs last much longer than your vinyl signage.” Daryl says he and Earl started the business because of the demand for quality work on buggies. “Clearview was started to meet the demand for a durable, clear windshield for our buggies,” Daryl says. “To build these windshields, we have the ability to glue polycarbonate. The second major product to join us is our sign division. We want to thank Wingard’s Custom Plastics for selling us that.” The Hershberger brothers’ work has earned them a loyal customer base that continues to take advantage of their quality services. They have expanded their customer base through positive word of mouth and attention to detail. Buggy parts and signs have both been mainstays for the business.
“Our main consistent product would be the buggy parts, followed by our custom signs,” Daryl says. “I enjoy all the parts that I make.” Daryl says he and Earl know how to prioritize their work. It’s a business strategy that has worked for them consistently since they opened in January of 2016. “We try to give parts for other builders the first priority, and use the signs to fill in the gaps,” Daryl says. “Lead times can vary. Most of the time parts can be made in a week, and signs can take a week to three weeks maximum.” The signs provide a way to showcase Daryl and Earl’s quality workmanship. The brothers’ reputation for excellence has grown beyond the Hoosier state. “We supply the buggy industry not only in Indiana, but also nationwide,” Daryl says.

Doing work for businesses in other states has enabled Daryl and Earl to continue growing their company. It’s also given them the motivation to meet new customers and keep the company moving in the right direction. Daryl says walk-in business at Clearview Routing is both welcomed and encouraged.
“I like all my customers, but we do mostly wholesale business so a lot of our orders are done by phone or fax, including signs,” Daryl says. “Customers are always able to stop in to also place an order.” Daryl says the coronavirus pandemic has led to increased business for Clearview Routing. “COVID-19 has had a huge impact on our business,” he says. “It created the opportunity to build acrylic cashier shields. Most of these went to Harbor Freight and PetSmart stores through a retail supply company called Vista Retail Solutions.”

Jimmy Faroh, co-owner of Hoosier Powder Coating in Nappanee, says he and his staff can take on any job, and ensure satisfactory results for customers. Faroh says it’s been that way since the company began. He and fellow co-owner Nelson Miller worked together before opening the business in October of 2016. “Nelson and I both worked at Challenger Door in Nappanee,” Faroh says. “Nelson was the quality manager and I was the production superintendent. Together, we saw the need for more powder coating, especially large items, and decided to go

into business together.” Hoosier Powder Coating is a one-stop shop for sandblasting and similar services. Faroh says the staff can take on a variety of jobs. “We have the ability to match any color, as well as fabricate, sandblast and powder coat,” he says. “We sandblast and powder coat in-house, and we have various fabrication partners, so our customers can come to us with drawings, or just an idea, and we can deliver a finished item.” Faroh believes there are many benefits to powder coating. “Powder coating is extremely durable, cost effective, and ecofriendly,” he says. “With powder coating being free from volatile organic compounds, and the quick processing time, it makes a very attractive option for custom projects and large-scale production orders.” Faroh says his staff ’s ability to multitask sets Hoosier Powder Coating apart from competitors. “Hoosier Powder Coating takes any job, big or small,” he says. “We specialize in production orders, but we can handle small orders as well. We also offer multi-stage coating, including clear coats, primers
and Plascoat. We also have the ability to custom match any color, and have over 7,000 colors available to us at any time.” Faroh says Hoosier Powder Coating’s state-of-the-art batch oven has made a big difference in the number of large and small jobs the business can take on. “The oven is 25 feet long, 10 feet wide, and 10 feet tall,” Faroh explains. “It really makes our company unique, because we can work on larger metal pieces. new. We have had a lot of farmers tell us they like the way we have sandblasted their equipment.”
Faroh has been pleased with the company since he and Miller started it four years ago.
Hoosier Powder Coating does sandblasting in-house with an industrial-sized system.
“I would say about 90% of our business is repeat customers,” Faroh says. “I love Nappanee. People really help each other here. Our customers have kept us extremely busy. It’s great to see that the industries we serve are still going strong during the pandemic.”
“We tell our customers that we can take on any size for the sandblasting,” Faroh says. “We also have the ability to come to your location to sandblast if you have something that is too big to be moved.” Faroh says Hoosier Powder Coating also does laser and plasma coating.
Hoosier Powder Coating is located at 9583 West 1350 North in Nappanee. To find out more, call 574-253-7737, email info@ hoosierpowder.com, and visit hoosierpowder.com.
“We have the ability to laser cut wood, plastic, steel, fiber, aluminum and stainless steel,” he says. “We can also etch all metals, and offer wood burnings.” Faroh says Hoosier Powder Coating also has a unique, four-stage wash system. Additionally, the business offers brake press forming, welding and turret punching. “It’s fast and doesn’t cost a lot,” Faroh says of the company’s turretpunching service. “I think that’s also why we get a lot of customers.”

anet Zimmer, owner of Paws and Claws & Company in Warsaw, strives to follow the golden rule in the operation of her business. “We really try to treat people as we would like to be treated,” Zimmer says. “Customer service is our main goal. We never push a product on someone, or try to sell someone more than they really need. We love to show new products to our customers, and hopefully they will want to try them as well.” The store has grown substantially since it opened more than 35 years ago. “The business started in the back half of the old Ski Hut building as a grooming shop on Center Street here in Warsaw,” Zimmer says. “It didn’t take long [to build the business], and customers were asking for supplies and pets.”

At that point, Zimmer decided it was time to expand the store. “We rented the front half of the building and added small animals and birds,” Zimmer says. “Next, we rented the rather dingy basement and added tropical fish.” Customers kept coming back for more animals, birds and supplies.

“After five years, we built the existing store on Market Street,” Zimmer says. “The community has always been very supportive, and hopefully we have returned that support over the years.” Zimmer has never regretted her decision to open Paws and Claws. “I was working at a local factory and realized that wasn’t for me,” she says. “I always had a love for animals, so this seemed like a perfect fit.” Paws and Claws has a wide variety of

choices for customers. “We have a large selection of animal treats and natural chews, including many rawhide alternatives,” Zimmer says. “We also carry CBD treats to help animals with hip and joint issues. “We carry many brands of pet foods and treats, and we only sell brands that have healthy ingredients. We have food for all stages of your pet’s life, and foods that help with things like allergies and sensitive stomachs.” Paws & Claws currently offers a frequent-buyer program that applies to many of the foods Zimmer carries. “After purchasing so many bags you get one free,” Zimmer says. “We also keep track of that for you.” Zimmer’s pet toys are also popular.

“We have all sorts of toys including enrichment toys that stimulate your pet’s mind,” she says. “Bored dogs can be destructive, and these toys help keep them occupied.” The fish for sale at Paws and Claws have been a calming pet choice for many customers. “We sell tropical fish - right now we have them closed down - and they can be very relaxing to watch,” Zimmer says. “I prefer any of the barb fish. They are more active. We also sell lots of crickets and worms for reptiles. We have reptile supplies, as well as smallanimal supplies.” Zimmer has grown to appreciate her Paws and Claws staff. “I am fortunate to have a very dedicated staff,” Zimmer says. “Two have been here for over fifty years combined. That’s hard to find anymore.” Paws and Claws & Company is located at 1801 East Market Street in Warsaw. You can give them a call at 574-2672338 or visit them online at pawsandclawsandcompany.net.

THE
GOOD FIGHT Breast Cancer Awareness License Plate Helps Raise Funds & Hope Writer & Photographer / Angela Cornell
Bonita Beck and Julia Ford
B
reast cancer is an ugly disease. Even if the statistics weren’t frightening enough, the disease itself is. Everything changes when the diagnosis is given. Treatments typically begin immediately, and with them come many adverse side effects. That’s only what happens inside a victim’s body. Outside, family dynamics and finances can quickly become strained. Friends long to help, but few know how, and most are afraid to say or do something wrong. The good news is prevention is an excellent offense, which is why the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness license plate exists. This special recognition license plate exists mostly because of the efforts of a vivacious and beloved Plymouth High School home economics teacher, Nancy Jaynes. Her goal was to initiate a “rolling billboard” for breast cancer awareness, and create a fund to help others. Unfortunately, after battling cancer for many years, Jaynes lost her battle in April of 2008. Her loss is one that her friends and family still feel keenly. Shelley Heiden, owner of Heiden Creative in Plymouth, is the commercial artist who Jaynes commissioned to design the license plate. Heiden’s involvement in the project is deeply personal. “I had a mother-in-law and a sister die of cancer, and then Nancy Jaynes was a very dear friend,” Heiden says. Jaynes and Heiden, together with the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust (IBCAT), spent years working on the

design before plate sales began in 2002. From the beginning, Jaynes’ desire was to bring hope.
Total Care. Inside and Out.
“We wanted it to be uplifting,” Heiden says. “There’s going to be a cure for cancer, so let’s keep that awareness up there and get it as high as we can get it - and prevent. Prevention is always better.” Thousands of drivers have purchased breast cancer license plates throughout the last 18 years. Heiden herself has one, and the number two in her plate number has a special meaning. “Nancy got the number one license plate, and I got number two,” she says. Through plate sales, the IBCAT has benefitted thousands of people around the state by providing grants for breast cancer screening programs, as well as diagnostic and support programs. The Nancy Jaynes Memorial Scholarship is also available for Hoosier students with a parent who has succumbed to the disease, or is currently battling it. However, the fight to prevent breast cancer has only begun for many people. Take Julia Ford and Bonita Beck, RN, of Knox. Their involvement began last year when they learned that they could make a difference in their county by partnering with the IBCAT and the Merit Foundation to provide mammograms for local women. “LaPorte was doing mammogram vouchers for Starke County women,” Ford says.

“Their charter was such that they were not going to be doing it in 2020, so I picked up the flag, so to speak, for Starke County.”
“This specialty plate originated from a Marshall County school teacher,” Ford says. “This is how the funds are channeled into the community.”
Thanks to Ford and Beck’s efforts, local women can receive free mammograms from Starke County health providers if they meet the right criteria. First, they must be at least 40 years old or be in a high-risk breast cancer category. Second, they must be either uninsured or underinsured. Third, they must meet low-income requirements.
Breast Cancer Awareness plates are available at any Indiana BMV branch, or online, for $40. From that fee, $25 goes to the IBCAT for programs and scholarships. To learn more, check out the IBCAT online at breastcancerplate.org. To get involved in Starke County, contact the Breast Health Project of Starke County by sending an email to breasthealthprojectsc@gmail.com.
As Ford and Beck look back on their first year as co-heads of the Breast Health Project of Starke County, they are pleased with the number of mammograms they have been able to provide for local women. As time goes on, Ford and Beck hope to provide more programs for Starke County residents, including screenings for other types of cancers. These two women love that they get to benefit their community in a meaningful way. They also find it incredible that they are continuing a local woman’s legacy.

he Lakes Magazine is a free publication mailed every month to homeowners in the Marshall, Fulton, Starke, and Pulaski regions. Our readers are more than 80% year-round homeowners, second home and weekend vacation homeowners. Our other Lakes of Kosciusko County Magazine is also mailed to readers in the Kosciusko and Lagrange County region. The Lakes Magazine is a local content publication that is a valuable resource in each area we serve. Thanks to the Internet, a true content magazine is the only thing in print that has actually increased in readership while phone books, couponbased publications, newspapers, auto and real estate circulars have drastically shrunk in readership. In addition to our printed magazines, we have a strong presence through social media, and our magazines are also available for free online and through our mobile app which is available for free on the Apple App Store or Google Play. Here at The Lakes Magazine we take pride in promoting positive, current and even historical content. Many of the advertisers that have reached out to us have been in business many years but have never advertised before. Today, we have a nice collective gathering of the region’s best word-of-mouth businesses. The Lakes Magazine reaches over 69,000 people that read this magazine for businesses and services to patronize locally. We cannot accept all new advertisement requests, but we do have openings for certain types of trades and businesses. John Lewandowski Publisher: The Lakes Magazine (574)249-9217 John@townepost.com
