ON THE GO QUICK’S CAR SERVICE ADDRESSES TRANSPORTATION WOES Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided
People who live in towns and cities located in less urbanized areas know the inconvenience that comes from not having access to reliable transportation. Jennifer Hill, a Knox resident and mother of five, is hoping to solve that problem for her neighbors.
side of the highway. It worried her, she said, and she hoped no one would be seriously hurt.
“Living in Starke County most of my life, I knew transportation here was an issue,” Hill says.
As a manager, she also knew that people lost their job because they did not have transportation to work.
Her solution was to start a business that operates just like a taxi. Those needing a ride can call for one and Hill said she will respond as quickly as possible. In most
Hill started Quick’s Car Service about five months ago. It was an idea that was hatched as she contemplated what she could do to support her family after the local fabrication shop she was working at sold to new owner and moved out of state. Her former job was located near the county jail and Hill said she watched inmates being released and, with no transportation, walked away down the 6 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com
cases that is within 10 – 15 minutes, or possibly 45 minutes if there are other fares ahead of that call. “First come, first-served, but it has been getting busier,” she says. It is also possible to schedule a ride, although that is not required. Quick’s Car Service charges a flat fee of $10 for travel within the Knox city limits. Outside of the city line, the fee is $10 plus $2 a mile. The same rates apply to the recently expanded service in Plymouth. Hill says she is open to passengers who want to go farther, such as the Chicago airports or to Indianapolis for doctor’s appointments. “I might not be able to take someone to Tennessee,” Hill says. “But my motto is we don’t say no.”

Hill has a set of priorities in place to take care of her passengers. “First and foremost is safety,” she says. “Safety for them and the driver.” Other important elements in her service are reliability, punctuality, friendliness and understanding. “If you are calling for a taxi, you may be in a bad spot,” Hill says. She can transport four passengers in a car or six passengers in the company’s van. She has no limitations on luggage. If it fits in the trunk or in the car, she can take it. With luggage, “if you can take it to the airport, I can take it in my vehicles,” Hill says. Word about her business has spread quickly, helped by roadside signs, creating a presence on Google searches, on the recommendations from family and friends and the visibility of her vehicles driving around town or parked in front of her house on State Route 35. Hill said she has the support of her children, who range in age from 9 to 26. She also has one granddaughter. “They are pretty stoked about it,” Hill says. “I’ve gotten feedback from their friends who say, ‘Oh your mom is the taxi lady.’ ”

Hill faces some challenges in this servicerelated business. She takes calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “The unpredictability is the biggest

challenge,” Hill says. But an even bigger challenge was analyzing and organizing the business structure before launching her car service. Doing a market comparison of other taxi services was difficult as there was no other local service like hers in Knox. While most business plans rely on market comparisons and industry research, Hill had to simply make her way on her own, essentially taking a “jumping in and go” approach. But there are rewards now. “I call what I do an adventure,” she says. “Every day is an adventure. I never know where I am going to go, I never know who I am going to meet. I ask people to call me and invite me into their daily adventures. I like helping people.” Quick’s Car Service can be reached at 574-249-3235.

THE NATIVE NOOK LOCAL GALLERY PROVIDES ARTISTIC SHOWCASE SPACE Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
A piece of art, whether created on canvas, on a potter’s wheel, through an instrument, by placing words on a page or through any other medium, represents a small piece of the artist’s soul. Sometimes, that’s obvious in the brushstrokes. Other times it’s barely noticeable. Either way, each piece of art represents a secret fragment of the creative person’s backstory.
gallery, The Native Nook, strives to give local artists - or “Creative Natives” - a chance to bring those secret fragments to light, both by showcasing their art and letting them tell their story. In college Shafer got a taste of the camaraderie artists often share. After moving back to Rochester, she was determined to expand the artistic culture in her hometown. Her efforts began by sitting on a board that established a makerspace - a place where people can test out their creative abilities across multiple mediums.

“We started meeting artists and creative people, and the network grew,” she says. “Now that we’re all more connected, even just within this community, everybody is really pushing new ideas and events.” Around the same time, Shafer established Digital Wolf Network, a local independent publishing company that produces a magazine and podcast featuring stories about local Creative Natives. For her, this is another way to create deeper connections within the local art community. The Native Nook provides a way to expand Digital Wolf Network’s influence on behalf of local Creative Natives, most of whom live within an hour of Rochester. “You can read, you can listen, or you can now view the stories and pieces of the Creative Natives,” Shafer says. is Shafer’s favorite part of the business, especially when it comes to seeing what they can create. “I’m a graphic designer, so my job is to always get someone’s information or story out there, or share a message,” Shafer says. “I’m always interested in what kind of message these people are sharing within their artwork.”
“I really want to help this community to help grow in the art aspect,” she says. “There’s now a place for these people - their stories - to go.”

meet-and-greet.” As The Native Nook grows, Shafer is looking forward to expanding her outreach to more artists, and even opening up for less common artistic events like book signings and poetry readings. “I’d love to meet new people and write more stories about local or nationwide artists,” she says. “I think there are more stories out there.”

FARM LIFE FOOD, FUN AND FESTIVALS AWAIT AT YELLOW RIVER FARMS Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
For many people, the key to running a successful business lies in strong communication among employees. The Scherf family, who owns and operates Yellow River Farms in Knox, knows how to communicate well and also offers great products to customers. They have worked hard to establish longrunning friendships with their faithful customers. Emily Scherf says the family has always operated their business that way. “I am the daughter-in-law of Co-owners Bill and Gina Scherf,” she says. “Bill and Gina, and Rose Ann Eichelberg and the late Wayne Eichelberg, opened Yellow River Farms on Highway 8. They started along the banks of the Yellow River, four miles east of Knox, Indiana, in 1990.” Scherf says Yellow River Farms has outstanding merchandise that has earned a strong reputation among the local community and beyond Knox. “They have been providing the best in farm-fresh vegetables, flowers and family fun for the folks in Starke County and the surrounding areas ever since they started,” she says. Scherf ’s husband Evan and their daughter Grace have a lot of fun working at Yellow River Farms. It’s an experience they cherish every day.

“The best part about this business is how family-oriented it is,” she says. “Our family is very involved in making the farm run smoothly. All of us. We are also always working together to stay active in the community. We love all of our local customers and getting to interact with them daily.” The Yellow River Farms annual fall festival has allowed the Scherf family to get to know their loyal customers even better. LOFTY BUSINESS VENTURES LOFT CREATIVE SOLUTIONS HELPS BUSINESSES FIND THEIR FOOTING IN ONLINE MARKETING
Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
Small business owners wear many different hats. They are managers, maintenance staff, custodians, receptionists, community liaison, and human resources, as well as being experts in their own field. Is it any wonder, then, that some things occasionally fall through the cracks? For many small business owners, that item is the finer points of marketing and advertising. The Loft Creative Solutions, a subsidy of GB customs and a sister company to Shade Master Windows, was established to help small businesses with their marketing needs. “We would have someone who would come in and say, ‘Hey, we need our truck wrapped,’ but they didn’t have a logo or a design. They didn’t even have business cards, they didn’t have anything,” says Marshall Clevenger, the founder of The Loft. In response to the perceived need,
Founder Marshall Clevenger & Billie Walber, Creative Director
20 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com
Clevenger and Creative Director Billie Walbert, his metaphorical right hand, created The Loft to meet all of a small business’ marketing and advertising needs under one roof at cost-effective rates. “If you want social media, we can do that,” Clevenger says. “If you want us to now print that logo so you can get it on your storefront, we can do that. If you want it on your vehicle, we can do that. For a small business owner, you can just walk through the door and we’ll do our best to take care of you. If you want shirts we can do it. Business cards, we can facilitate that. We can use whoever they want. If they want to use Bowen Printing or TCP, or whatever the case may be, we just facilitate where they get it all done.” Business owners who use The Loft also have direct access to GB Custom’s automotive solutions, since Clevenger and Walbert’s domain is on the second floor, directly above the mother company. Together, they facilitate the bookend aspects of business: the mundane and creative. Both of which are vitally important. “It’s a weird thing to say ‘digital media and oil change,’ but business owners think, ‘I have this many hours in a day to get things done. How can I get the most done?’” he says. As someone who’s been in business for himself for more than 20 years, he recognized that with a little ingenuity, marketing venues like Facebook would be more accessible to the little guy. “If you just scaled this for small businesses, THE LAKES MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com / 21
you’d be very busy and it would be profitable,” Clevenger says. Everything that comes from The Loft is as unique as the companies that use their services, keeping in mind each company’s brand and goals. They also employ freelancers who are skilled at all manners of graphic design and creative content. However, even with so many options available, Clevenger and Walbert keep the price point low for the benefit of small business owners. Many of the businesses that take advantage of The Loft’s services are start-ups. “A lot are entrepreneurs in the area who are getting started,” Clevenger says. “There’s a lot of variety of companies that come through and they need something done.” When a new client emails or calls The Loft, Walbert sets up a time to meet with the business owner for a creative meeting with

every member of the team that will be involved in the marketing process for that particular client, including freelancers who will help with the project. “We sit down with the business owner to figure out what they need. It’s always a fun meeting,” Clevenger says. “We don’t charge for that first meeting, but we just try to make sure they’re on the right path.” Step by step through the creative design process the business owner remains in control. That remains true whether that is just social media management, or whether they want to add other services to the basic package, like apparel or website development.

“What we do is a very basic concept,” Clevenger says. “We’ll use platforms designed for a small business owner to use.” The Loft doesn’t retain any rights over the work once everything is done. “Once we have everything designed for them, it’s theirs. We give them access to everything.” Clevenger says. “At the end of the day, when we’re done with it, it’s on a platform built for them to use. We don’t have to touch it again if they don’t want us to.” After the initial set-up work is done, The Loft can help maintain the business’ online presence. One of their services is managing

social media, which can be as simple as making eight posts a month or as complicated as designing artwork to go along with the posts. Although Clevenger was the visionary for the company’s concept, it was Walbert, with her expertise and special touch, who made The Loft into a viable construct. “I enjoy the engagement you can see and how things grow and figuring out the analytics — seeing what works and what doesn’t,” Walbert says. The best part for her, though, is having direct involvement with the various business owners.
“My favorite part is putting together the packages for them. Getting to know them, figuring out what they need, making it unique and cohesive for that particular business,” Walbert explains. “A lot of it is just fun, especially when you hear back from the business owners.” What’s more, she’s good at it, and her clients appreciate her work. “The feedback that we get is that they’re loving it, they are getting engagements. Their audience is growing and their page is growing,” she says. She also offers a talk show, available on their website and on Facebook, that features local business owners. The Loft offers a wide array of services for local small business owners to network online and with each other, all of which are designed to make out-of-the-box marketing and advertising, both in print and online, work at full capacity. “It’s really nice working with local businesses and making Facebook and social networking sites actually network,” Clevenger says. usiness owner Kevin Carr is motivated by several things - his faith, his family and the quality of the work he provides to his customers.
Most of the customers at his dent repair business, Carr Tech Automotive Services, fall into two categories, Carr says. “A high percentage of my customers are the people who are aggravated about the ding they see every day as they get into their car headed for work, and also the person who is super frustrated to come out to a parking lot and find their car damaged,” he says. Carr spent seven years working in the mobile paintless dent repair business, being trained by a good friend he met when working in jail ministry, before opening his own shop in April of 2018. It is a family business, and that means that his wife Elizabeth and the couple’s nine children have put in “blood, sweat and tears,” he says, to get it running and keeping it going.

On weekends and sometimes during the week the children often visit the shop. It is a perk that Carr enjoys. That quality family life carries over into the quality he places on the work his team completes for customers. Carr’s business motto is, “A good name is to be chosen over great riches,” from Proverbs 22:1. He stands by the quality of the work. It is the same trait he expects of those he hires. New hires need to be team-oriented. He currently employs four full-time people. Three mobile dent repair technicians, an office manager, and a detailer and painter are all part of his team. “I want people who work together and root for each other,” Carr explains. “I want people who want a career. Passion is required. You’ve got to love your work and take pride in it, and know your name is connected to that.”

The dent repair business is complex, and once potential employees learn all the nuances of the repair process and methods used, Carr says they eventually earn “hat-off respect. For a properly trained tech, this is more than a job, it’s an art.”

Carr Tech uses a method that pushes out dents and dings without painting. These dents can be the result of grocery-cart hits, door dings or even hail damage. Carr has even seen a few dents caused by a collision with a deer. If the vehicle has a dent and the paint surface has not been broken, Carr Tech should be the first call. The repair methods used at Carr Tech differ from those that are used by a traditional body shop, but Carr’s methods are often completed within one day, don’t require repair reports, and are usually much more cost effective for the customer. Repairs of dents caused by hail take longer because of the potentially excessive damage. Traditionally, damage that occurs from a hail storm is fixed with a polyester putty product, which is then sanded, buffed and painted. Otherwise, the damaged panels are taken off, replaced, and the car is repainted. This is labor intensive, which adds to the cost of the repairs. The Carr Tech method is the preferred method of repairing dents, Carr says. It repairs the dented surface without requiring any use of body filler, repainting or color matching. It is typically more cost effective for the client, depending on the size and damage. Carr Tech has specialized in paintless dent repair since opening, and is expanding the services offered including System X ceramic coating. RestoreFX, a paintless clear coat repair system, was recently added, and it takes care of scratches caused by pets, debris or car washes, among other causes. “It’s like hitting the reset button on your vehicle’s clear coat,” Carr explains.

Anyone who needs a dent repaired is encouraged to check in with Carr Tech. If the damage is caused by hail, the customer
should file a claim with their insurance company first, and then contact them with the claim number and insurance company contact and they can take it from there. If the dent is not from hail damage, Carr says the customer can take a photo of the dent and send it to Carr Tech via text. By looking at the photo, Carr can advise the customer as to the options, and whether the repair can be done by his team or should be taken to an auto body shop. He works with insurance companies for needed repairs, as well as local body shops. “Unless it is really mangled, we can get an estimate prepared with a photo,” he says. When a repair is needed, the Carr Tech dent repair team can travel to the customer or take care of the vehicle at the Warsaw shop. His team travels throughout northern Indiana including Fort Wayne, Elkhart, Bristol, Granger, Lakeville, South Bend, Plymouth, Rochester, Goshen, Leesburg, Wabash, North Manchester, Columbia
City, Syracuse, Middlebury and other locations. Carr has been in this business long enough to learn some important lessons. He feels quality is more important than speed. The key to customer satisfaction, he says, is to undersell and over-deliver. This ensures that the result will meet or exceed customer expectations. Without quality, the stress factor increases, he says. For Carr, his reward is seeing something damaged become repaired, and giving his customers what he calls the “wow effect.” He likens this to his strong faith, which

compels him to give Bibles to anyone who stops in and asks for one. “We get to do auto restoration, but God takes ruined sinners and does a spiritual restoration,” Carr says. “My faith is the heartbeat that keeps us going.” Customers can come into the shop at 904 South Buffalo Street in Warsaw, call 574-241-1234, or visit carrtechautomotivesolutions.com for more information.

FROM OUR KITCHEN TO YOURS TEA, NATURES MEDICINE CABINET Writer / Cheryl – New Kitchen Store
Typically most people are either coffee drinkers or tea drinkers. Even if they drink both they tend to prefer one over the other. In my younger years, I was almost exclusively a coffee drinker. I would pretty much only drink tea in the summer in the iced form. As time has gone by, I am now one of those people who like both. The main reason for my switch to drinking more tea is because I have become more and more aware of the health benefits of drinking tea. Nearly 20 years ago I was diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). At the time, after a myriad of horrible tests, the doctors sent me away
with the diagnosis but nothing else. They said there was nothing they could do and that I would have to learn to live with it. I definitely knew that it was not something I could just live with, so I turned to alternative medicine. The more research I did, the more and more often I was directed back to tea as a help in alleviating my symptoms. Not just any tea though, specific teas for specific symptoms. The two main teas that I found to help the most are ginger tea and peppermint tea. Did you know that ginger THE LAKES MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com / 31
is a natural remedy for nausea and vomiting? It has been found to be just as effective as prescription antiemetic drugs but without any of the nasty side effects. Peppermint is a natural muscle relaxer. When I was having severe gut cramps I would brew a very
strong cup of peppermint tea and within 20 minutes most, if not all of the cramps were gone. Do you suffer from acid reflux, heartburn, GERD or any other stomach complaint? I did. I found green tea to be the answer. Green tea reduces the acid in your stomach and helps reduce these very uncomfortable problems. Another great herbal tea is raspberry leaf tea. No matter what stage of life a woman is in, from pre-teen to post-menopausal, raspberry leaf tea has been proven to help the female organs work properly. It reduces cramping and bleeding in younger women, and helps, almost by magic, reduce hot flashes that accompany the change of life. This is another tea that I can personally attest to its benefits in this area. Need a burst of energy? Try moringa tea. Moringa is a tree native to north India. Almost all of the tree is edible and used for medicinal purposes. Moringa leaves are an excellent source of many different vitamins and minerals and are also rich in antioxidants. If I am not able to have my morning cup of coffee, I always reach for my moringa tea. It gives me the same energy as coffee but without the caffeine.
I could go on and on about all the different teas and the benefits of tea, but it would fill this entire magazine. Suffice it to say, that no matter which tea you choose whether black, white, green, Oolong, or herbal there are health benefits to them.
Did you know Oolong tea boosts your metabolism? Yep, it sure does! It combines the qualities of green and black tea and the polyphenol found in this tea may boost your metabolism. And every little bit helps when trying to lose weight!
If you are looking for a place that carries a huge variety of high-quality teas, come to New Kitchen Store. We have an excellent selection of Super Herb Teas, educational
tea books, and tea-making equipment available. Without a doubt, you will find a tea to suit your tastes or your health needs. HUNTER HEARING CENTER HELPS YOU CONNECT TO THE SOUNDS OF LIFE Writer / Lois Tomaszewksi Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
The ability to hear sounds, recognize spoken words and enjoy what happens around you is often taken for granted. At Hunter Hearing Center in Plymouth, Hearing Instrument Specialist Neil Hunter understands how troubling it can be when the ability to hear is impacted by illness, injury or even the aging process. “My son, Adam, has a severe hearing loss in his left ear,” Hunter says. Adam’s hearing loss was not detected when he was an infant and toddler, but his parents noticed that he walked later than their other children and he was prone to ear infections. When he started school, the hearing loss was discovered and Adam was determined to be a candidate for surgery and fitted with hearing aids, which his father says Adam disliked. “Adam’s situation led me to do what I am doing today,” Hunter explains. “It helps me better understand everyone who walks in through my door or when I walk through their door.” Hunter sees clients at his office at 568 Oak Street

in Plymouth or makes house calls to people who are inbound or cannot come to the office. Many of the people he consults in their homes are Amish. The practice has about 200 patients ranging from Plymouth to the north side Fort Wayne and even to South Whitley. “My patients are like family,” he says. “With all my patients, I spend more time to get them to where they need to be.” He has learned how to adapt the way he operates his business to accommodate lifestyles, such as helping his Amish patients use hearing technology that fits into their way of life and does not compromise their beliefs. Innovations in technology make it easier to find compatible devices for everyone and help make his business mobile, too. Hunter left a career in orthopedic sales for a new career in helping people improve their hearing. He is trained to do hearing testing and fitting for hearing aids, and as he explains, “anything an audiologist can do.” When someone is experiencing hearing loss, which can be gradual, there are some signs that family members can watch for, Hunter advises. It is often difficult for a person who is experiencing a

hearing loss to share what is happening. “No one wants to lose their hearing,” he says. “Some signs are easy to pick out,” he says. “Such as having difficulty understanding people on the phone or when the television is up too loud for others in the household.” But there is another sign that is important to notice, one that can make a difference in the quality of life. “The big one is when you start seeing people withdraw from conversations,” he explains. “They don’t participate, and they stop going out.” Hunter says studies have shown that being able to understand what a person is hearing keeps the brain active. Research shows that there is even a link between being able to hear and understand can slow the progression of dementia or Alzheimer’s, he says. Sometimes the problem with an elderly loved one’s hearing is not related to lack of hearing but more as a cognitive function. “Ultimately, people want to understand what they hear,” he says. “We always need to establish what our goals should be with each patient.”

Taking precautions to minimize hearing loss should be a priority, he says. People who work around loud machinery in factories or noisy environments should be especially concerned. Earplugs and other noise canceling devices are a wise place to start, but sound can travel through a bone, so these alone might not solve the issue, Hunter cautions. “Wear ear protection whenever you can,” he says. “Do everything you can to preserve what you have.” After becoming licensed and certified, Hunter worked in Georgia for a
few years before moving back home. He is from Plymouth, a graduate of Plymouth High School. He is married to Keshena Hunter, and they have four children, John, Erin, Adam and Sara. To find out more or to schedule a visit, a doctor’s referral is not required. A hearing test takes about 90 minutes and can be scheduled with office staff Olivia Schwab by calling Hunter Hearing Center at 574-540-2526. As the foundation of their little business was being established, there were a few life changes along the way. By 2016, they had moved to their current location and were thrilled to be able to make use of a state inspected kitchen facility. What the Yoders now referred to as their “Mom and Pop” operation was having an exceptional run, so much so that they began welcoming tours. As it turned out, they needn’t have worried. “We’re busier now than we’ve ever been,” Orla says. And that menu of homemade jams has since broadened to include 23 different flavors, available in 8.7 and 2.5 ounce sizes. All of the jars are created, packaged, and prepared for distribution right on the family’s property. There are many repeat customers, Orla notes, because once a customer takes a taste of their jams, they are bound to come back for more. “Taste is the key,” Orla adds. The Yoders have become a popular purveyor at various craft shows and festivals around northern Indiana, and they are especially eager to make an appearance at the upcoming Fall Crafter’s Fair at the Michiana Event Center in Shipshewana. One of the whimsical touches that they incorporate into their travels is a doll, dressed in handmade country attire, which Carolyn found at a garage sale for $5. The couple calls him David, and he is often found diving into the sweet treats, with a few smears of jam across his cherubic face. That is always a conversation piece, Orla says, and it entices customers to give the products a try. SUPERIOR RESTORATION LOCAL COMPANY CELEBRATES 21 YEARS IN BUSINESS
Writer / Amy Lant-Wenger Photography Provided
When David Miller was a boy, his father owned a John Deere tractor. It was a classic piece of machinery that would likely be considered vintage today. It served its purpose well for a time, but even so, young Miller thought that perhaps it needed something extra. And so he asked his father if he could touch it up with a bit of paint.

Well, his father wasn’t keen to the request, and he eventually sold the equipment to a family member. The trusty tractor made its way through a few ownerships within the family, until Miller, as a newlywed, had an opportunity to buy the family heirloom back into his care. And at last, he was able to paint it, revive it, and design it to his heart’s content. That is the story of how Miller launched Superior Restoration, at

the family homestead in the Ligonier countryside. Now marking the 21st year of operation, Miller is gearing up to offer some new services to his customer base. Miller admits that this career venture wasn’t particularly part of his original goals, but that, over time, his reputation has grown exponentially through what he modestly admits is word of mouth. With virtually no large-scale advertising, and a fairly minimal profile, Superior Restoration has become a formidable force in the restoration and recovery of a tremendous range of items. “We cover a pretty big field,” Miller says, when asked what types of machinery he has worked with. “I couldn’t name everything we’ve done in just one day,” he adds with a chuckle. His expertise includes, but is by no means limited to, appliances, farm equipment, toys and accoutrements for the home and lawn. Miller’s customer base is equally diverse. “We do business with a lot of different shops and existing customers, but we’re always looking forward to meeting with new businesses,” he says. To that end, Miller is bringing some new additions to his current line of restoration equipment. One of the new units he is looking to

The item that is being refinished is subjected to a continual source of abrasion, while simultaneously recycling the particulates being used to perfect the finish. Another piece of machinery that Miller will be incorporating is a vapor blaster, which involves infusing the abrasives with water, which helps to provide the finest, smoothest grade of

It can also be a preferred option for varying sizes and shapes of metals, and by utilizing the power of water, there is less of a mess created by dust. Miller enjoys showcasing some of his finished work at various shows across the region, and most recently has displayed his restoration talents throughout LaGrange County and the Antique Engine and Tractor Show in Portland, Indiana. HOW TO MAKE MUMMY DOGS Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Open your crescent roll package and unroll the dough. Press on the perforations to seal them together. Cut the dough into 1/4 inch strips. Wrap the pieces of dough around each hot dog creating bandages by stretching the dough slightly and letting it overlap and criss-cross. You don’t completely cover the hot dog, leave gaps so it looks like a mummy peeking out from its bandages. Place each wrapped hot dog on a baking sheet and then bake for 10-12 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and hot dogs are warmed through. Remove from the oven and place a small dot of ketchup or mustard on the back of your candy eyes and add 2 to each mummy dog.

LOCAL COMPANY MOVES TO NEW MILLERSBURG LOCATION Writer / Amy Lant-Wenger Photography Provided
Some years ago there was a popular song that beckoned to folks, inviting them to “let the sunshine in.” And while most would be perfectly willing and happy to do exactly that, it is always nice to have the option to set a different mood by adjusting the measures of light. To accomplish this, people have often chosen to utilize window treatments that are not only practical, but that serve as a decorative flourish to any room. And by enlisting the assistance of Four Woods Shades and Blinds, customers can achieve that perfect look and function with a wide variety of colors and

Formerly situated in Topeka, this small but innovative company has passed the proverbial baton to a new generation of ownership. Marlin and Dorene Yoder premiered the updated facility in April of 2021. The company features an extensive line of window dressings, including sheers, room darkening materials, roller shades, and coverings that provide sun protection, to list a few. There is a showroom on the premises that illustrates various designs and finished looks, along with sample books that customers can peruse to glimpse various colors, finishes and creations to either blend in with, or add accents to, a room’s decorative scheme. HARD KNOX GYM
FAMILYOWNED GYM HELPS PEOPLE SUCCEED IN HEALTH & FITNESS GOALS
Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
It often doesn’t take much to empower someone else. A kind word, an encouraging nod, lending someone a sympathetic and non-judgmental ear or making a helpful suggestion can all go a long way to helping someone else. Sometimes, empowerment requires a lot more effort. Tiffany Hernandez, for instance, empowers the people around her through the services, programs, and products offered at Hard Knox Gym, which she and her husband, Seth, opened in late July.
see how this little area can come together for people,” she says. “I fell in love with the little place.” Owning a gym has been a dream for Tiffany for some time, but it wasn’t until recently that it could become a reality. “One day, I looked at him and said, ‘Let’s open a gym.’ And he said, ‘Okay!’” she explains. “We kinda went in blind. We’ve been learning as we go, doing the best we can, figuring out the best way to do things, making our people happy, and giving back to the community.”
Tiffany has loved watching the community come together for health and wellness, “We’ve always been into fitness,” Tiffany says. creating a unique culture inside the four walls “We wanted to help people in a way that wasn’t of the gym as individuals try to beat their in a hospital setting.” personal records. “ Tiffany, who grew up in Michigan, moved to Knox when she married Seth, a Knox native, three years ago. It didn’t take long for her to fall in love with the town. “It’s pretty cool to THE LAKES MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com / 59
The people have been amazing,” she says. “Just seeing the camaraderie here, seeing strangers or people who have known each other their
entire lives, celebrating everybody’s separate wins. In a sense, we’re all winning together.” Everyone who comes through the doors are interested in getting and keeping their health on track. Some have been working on that for years, others have never been to a gym before. “They told me, ‘It doesn’t feel intimidating here. It feels like a family,’ ” Tiffany says. Guests at Hard Knox Gym have dozens of equipment, ranging in style from cardio, circuit machines, to plate-loaded machines. There are also several types of classes offered, like the ever-popular high-intensity interval training (HIIT), as well as kickboxing, jujitsu, wrestling and more. Between 8-6, Hard Knox Gym also has tanning beds available. For those who want a little extra, there’s also a fitness trainer and a nutritionist on-site. The smoothies are all made with fresh ingredients and are available to members and non-members alike. “She’s been a huge supporter and part of this business,” Tiffany says. “She makes them with real bananas, strawberries, snickers, and other kinds of things. A lot of the recipes she’s come up with herself!” Between 8-6 they also offer childcare for
anyone up to 16 years old. “I really want to offer parents the chance to come work out, even with little ones,” Tiffany says. As a community-focused venture, Hard Knox Gym will be offering some charity events, like a food drive around Thanksgiving and a powerlifting competition in December to raise money to buy toys for kids in the area. “We want to give back to our community, so we’re going to be trying to think of ideas and events to come together there,” Tiffany says.
For the Hernandezes, the gym is a way to benefit their community in a new and unique way. “It’s a lot of support and help. We want to see this community get better as a whole,” she says. “I’ve had people say that we’re saving lives here.” As time goes on, Tiffany hopes the gym will continue to thrive. “I want to see the same faces I see today five years from now. I want to see them still working on their goals and being a part of something that I feel is bigger than themselves. It gives people

MAKING CONNECTIONS LOVEWAY THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN SERVICES EMPOWERS KIDS THROUGH HORSES Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided
For the children who come to LoveWay Therapeutic Equestrian Services, the time they spend at the stable is “not just a pony ride.” Executive Director Shelley Becker uses that declaration to illustrate that the services provided by her specially trained staff and volunteers make a difference in the lives of the children they see throughout the school year. It is as one Jane Allen, the superintendent
of Middlebury Community Schools said, “a necessary part of our students’ curriculum.” “We are here to give the students with special needs who we see every opportunity to grow and be empowered, to be all that they can be in life,” Becker says. “We are blessed to be able to do it through using a horse.” Instructors at LoveWay are trained and certified as PATH (Professional Association of Therapy Horsemanship)
instructors. This certification comes with high standards and training, something that is needed when helping the children gain confidence and addressing mobility and other physical issues. LoveWay works with students in 15 school districts in Elkhart County, Indiana and Cass County, Michigan. Students with cognitive or physical disabilities make use of the services as part of their school day. Homeschooled students are also served in the evening or on Saturdays. Becker said her organization works with 90 different diagnoses and services are provided free of charge. Equine Assisted Services help these children in many ways.

“Students are impacted physically through the movement of the horse,” Becker explains. “They are impacted socially by the volunteers who are incorporated into the sessions, and they are impacted emotionally with animals, like all of us are. They are also impacted cognitively, too.” Students work with a team and the instructor. The team includes a horse walker, a person who leads the horse in the arena, and one or two side walkers, depending on the individual child’s needs. That means that volunteers are critical to the services each student receives, Becker says. Volunteers are given extensive training and then assigned as their skills and knowledge improve. No prior knowledge of horses is required, nor is experience with special needs children. All volunteers receive the same training and start at the same level.

“We will teach you everything you need to know,” Becker says. “People are not asked to do any more than they are confident doing.” A minimum of 175 volunteers are needed each school year. Time slots are available during the day, in the evenings and on weekends. As the organization gets ready to head into the school year, about 50 more volunteers are needed to fill that
minimum requirement, Becker says.
The 2021 event was Sept. 25.
The organization relies on donors to keep operations going. One popular fundraiser that has helped raise money is the RideA-Thon. Riders and their horses come to LoveWay to take part in an 8-mile trail ride. This has been going on for 28 years.
LoveWay was established 48 years ago. As detailed in the history page on the website: “LoveWay Projects, Inc. was founded by Gary and Sandy Weatherwax in 1973 in memory of their 16-year-old daughter, Laurie. While in high school,
Laurie had taken a school trip to Augusta, Michigan to visit the Cheff Center. At that time, Cheff Center was the only therapeutic riding center in the United States.” The visit cemented Laurie’s desire to help others with physical, mental or emotional

TIPPY RIVER DOG AND HUNT SUPPLY COVERS ALL YOUR HUNTING AND FISHING NEEDS Writer / Angela Cornell Photography Provided
Stores like Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s are the Disney World of the outdoor sports world. However, for areas like the lakes region of Indiana, where the closest one is an hour away or farther, outdoor enthusiasts have to content themselves with browsing sections in franchised farm stores or shopping online. Jake Wyatt and his partner Johnny Wadkins opened Tippy River Dog and Hunt Supply. Wyatt has always loved the outdoors. “I grew up hunting and fishing,” he says. “That was my life. Even after I graduated high school, I went to Wyoming and
became a professional hunting and fishing guide for big game.” After a few years he moved back to Indiana. Although he transitioned out of the field professionally, he kept it up as a hobby. It was through coon hunting that he met Wadkins, who is a champion coon hunter and a local supply dealer. The two men bonded over their mutual love of the hunting sports. That passion eventually led to inspiration. “We were talking one day and we thought, ‘This community really needs a good outdoor shop,’” Wyatt says. “We have the drawing power to draw people from states away, with the niche being coon hunting. There’s really no place to go to get these THE LAKES MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com / 69
products. Box stores don’t really sell stuff like this.” The rest is history. Today, Tippy River is a one-stop shop for all hunting needs. “It’s an outdoor shop,” Wyatt says. “It has everything for hunting and fishing as our niche. Our core is for coon hunting.” Their other core areas are hometown customer service and industry expertise. “I want that one-on-one feel when someone walks through the door,” Wyatt says. “Customer service is there for sure. I think the knowledge is there, with Johnny or myself. I’ve hunted or fished just about anything. I have knowledge from doing it all my life - not just in Indiana but across the United States.” Since opening, the shop has grown into

a business for hunters and fishermen, by hunters and fishermen. Today, they have supplies for all sorts of outdoor sportsmen, including hunters of upland birds, rabbits and squirrels. “We all use the same products to track dogs and for some gear,” Wyatt says. Dog owners can also get personalized dog collars at Tippy River. “Buy a collar off the shelf, and I can put your name and number on the tag and rivet it onto the collar,” Wyatt says. They’re also an authorized Garmin dealer, and Wyatt says the shop carries “anything from luxury watches to dog collars, GPSs, track-and-train stuff any of that.” The owners recently added deer hunting supplies to the inventory, just in time for the season to begin on October 1. “We have basically all your necessities for deer hunting - stands, blinds, scent controls, safety harnesses, arrowheads that kind of thing,” Wyatt says. As a result of being located less than 10 minutes away from Lake Manitou, the shop has a large selection of bait and tackle, much of which is up to tournament standards. “We have a lot of soft plastics for our bass fishermen, as well as crappie, blue gill and catfish baits,” Wyatt says. “We sell live bait. We have crappie minnows, bass minnows, night crawlers, wax worms, wigglers and crickets.”

However, they don’t only sell fishing and hunting gear. Half of their store includes grain and feed supplies. “We sell anything from pond fish food to horse feed,” Wyatt says. “The only thing we don’t sell is cattle and pig food. dogs, heartworm and all-wormer, and stuff like that.” Wyatt and Wadkins hope to continue to expand their business in the years to come, both with products and with hunting and fishing tournament events. “I would really like to have a bass fishing tournament,” Wyatt says. “We’re also talking about having a competition coon hunt and a cookout. That’s all in the future. We’re trying to figure out the details.” Anyone interested in participating is encouraged to follow the business on Facebook at facebook.com/ tippyriverdogandhuntsupply. LAKES AREA HISTORICAL HAUNTINGS Writer / Jeff Kenney Photography Provided
It’s the time of year, once again, when spooky stories come to the fore, and there are several in the Lakes readership area (including, no doubt, some that aren’t included in this article). One tale that’s not only stood the longest test of time but which has been featured in
the pages of collections of ghost stories and folklore both regional national is that of the ghost of Pau-Koo-Shuck. The story begins with Potawatomi Chief Aubbeenaubbee, whose village occupied the south shore of Lake Maxinkuckee and into Fulton County. In 1835 (according to some sources), the old chief, in a bout of rage, killed his wife, with tribal elders directing his eldest son, Pau-
Koo-Shuck, to exact justice upon his father for the crime. Eventually, Pau-Koo-Shuck found his father and killed him, taking on the mantle of the chief of what had been Aubbeenaubbee’s band. The actual historical details become a bit murky from there. There’s evidence to support the possibility that Pau-Koo-Shuck voluntarily joined other Potawatomi in 1837 in migrating to lands in Kansas designed by

the federal government in forced removal of Northern Indiana Potawatomi. There’s also some evidence that Pau-Koo-Shuck was part of the tragic, 1838 Trail of Death which departed from Twin Lakes (site of the Potawatomi Catholic chapel) in September of that year. Either way, Pau-Koo-Shuck was among those who opted not to make the full journey to Kansas and instead returned to Maxinkuckee. He died within a short time of his return, sad and frustrated at the turn of events that had befallen his people.

In the years that followed, well into the 1840s, a number of the European-originated settlers who had moved to the area swore they saw Pau-Koo-Shuck’s ghost, paddling his canoe or dancing along Maxinkuckee’s shores on foggy nights, a phenomenon which made headlines and was repeated and written down through the years. Another commonly repeated tale of an area haunting, which includes a bit of visible evidence for those interested in taking a drive, is that of Dead Man’s College. At the intersection of 700 N and 500 W in Fulton County’s Richland Township sit the remains of a late 19th and early 20th-century one-room, brick schoolhouse -- not, despite the popular name attached to it, an actual college. Adjacent to what’s left of the building (which, over recent years, has become very little) sits a raised hump of ground around which 500 W makes a “Y,” some 100 feet in front of (to the west of) the school building itself. The ground was (and is) an abandoned family cemetery, where at least three young children are buried, in addition to David Rumbaugh, who was born in 1798 (and died in 1850). That cemetery, coupled with the large, wooden sign, “Dead Man’s College” (which was added more recently), not surprisingly, has a variety of ghostly legends attached to it, including the claim that at least one person is buried under the front steps of the schoolhouse (or in some rumors, under the building itself), and of course, there’s the obligatory claim that a visit to the place at midnight will reveal ghostly children in vintage attire who appear and ask
one play with them. The old schoolhouse was built sometime after 1876, according to online sources (the latest year of death among the graves is 1864). Besides its unique name, which appears to have been the commonly used one during its tenure as a school (which must have been a lot of fun for the pupils), arguably its greatest claim to fame is that Vernie Bowen taught there in 1918 when his infant son Otis was born. Of course, Otis Bowen would become one of the Hoosier state’s most popular governors in 1972, and later Secretary of Health and Welfare under President Reagan. A number of recollections of Dead Man’s College can be found online, in Fulton County resident Judge Tombaugh’s invaluable local history and genealogy material at the Fulton County Library website (www.fulco. lib.in.us). Among other information there, it’s noted that the playground was in front of the
building, which put it in close proximity to the cemetery. There’s also the tale of a student prankster who attached a bell to a string or rope. Former pupil Dan Cook (born in 1893), wrote that a classmate “would ring the bell with his foot during school, and was not detected by the teacher. This became a sort of tradition (among students through the years)...a favorite line the boys told the teacher was that the bell was rung by the ghost of one of the dead people buried under the school. There was even a story that a man was killed and buried under the school.” Dead Man’s College saw its final semester in the spring of 1926, and despite the spooky ethos the place may suggest to us today, its former students and staff report happy memories of it.
other abandoned one-room district school buildings, would say, ‘Farewell. I have served my time.’ ” Speaking of schools, an institution as historic and storied as the 1894-founded Culver Academies might be expected to have its share of ghost stories as well, with the longest-lived being “The Phantom of Argonne.” According to the school newspaper, the Vedette, of March 26, 1926, a dark figure patrolled the third-floor halls of Argonne Barrack, a structure completed in 1919 and named (along with its adjacent barrack, Chateau Thierry) for World War I battles in which the school lost the highest number of its graduates. Cadets heard “weird shudders and moans,” footsteps, and the water fountain running, though, when checked, students found the fountain dry.
“Although it bears the marks of age,” wrote Bowen of the school, 64 years after it closed, “to all those who went to school there or taught there, it is an emblem of community service. If it would talk, it, like all of the

article. By then, both Argonne and CT, as its known on campus, had become girls dormitories, and girls living in Argonne swore that “a man dressed in a tuxedo appears in the mirror in their bathroom. This spooky gentleman is referred to as ‘Tuxedo Man.’ ” Argonne residents also reported hearing the showers mysteriously turning on and off, though some didn’t know whether to chalk it up to a ghostly presence or just “bad plumbing.”
Other ghostly tales on the Culver campus include students sneaking to the Memorial Chapel late at night and seeing ghostly boys singing, aging into old men before their very eyes, as well as the popular legend of “Clubfoot,” a revenge-seeking denizen of the school’s summertime Woodcraft Camp. Fine Arts instructor Bob Nowalk reported that, during a late-night work session in the school’s Eppley Auditorium, he heard a door opening and footsteps climbing the stairs to the stage, crossing the stage, and climbing back down the opposite stairwell, opening and closing the exit in departure. The problem: Nowalk could see no one making the obvious, nearby noises (others have reported similarly strange noises and presences in the building).
Another oft-mentioned haunted site, though now only a memory, was the popular Hayloft Restaurant west of Plymouth. In the late 1980s, staff and owners of the converted barn began to notice an array of strange happenings including the appearance of an overalls-clad ghost who often smelled of burning wood. Eerily, the building burned to the ground in 2001. There’s also the longstanding claim of the cemetery known as “Little Egypt” in the Bremen area being haunted, complete with pale apparitions and disappearing lights, among other local legends. Believe in these, and other area ghost stories, or not, they make for October and Halloween fun and perhaps serve as a reminder that, just maybe, as Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley famously wrote in his legendary “Little Orphant Annie” poem, “...the Gobble-uns ‘at gits you Ef you Don’t Watch Out!”
