Robert Aloi, managing partner and professional land surveyor with Territorial Engineering LLC in Walkerton, says his firm offers its customers many years of experience. Aloi says it’s been that way since Territorial Engineering began. The firm’s high-quality work has resulted in positive feedback and repeat business from loyal clients. “Territorial Engineering has been in the business of land surveying and civil engineering consulting for 42 years,” Aloi says. “The business was started in 1978 by my business partner, Van H. Janovic. I became a partner in 2001. I started out with Van as a civil engineer, and later learned to love the art and challenge of land surveying, and how the two disciplines are critical to the successful development of a piece of land. Aloi says he continues to enjoy his work at Territorial Engineering, and in particular he appreciates seeing a project through from the early stages to completion. “Land surveying and civil engineering is a pretty diverse field,” he says. “Our clients rely on us to measure precisely so that they can be successful with their own projects. From completing a boundary survey that shows a property’s complete characteristics, to seeing a project design successfully built from beginning to end, it is a challenge that is very rewarding.” Territorial Engineering is located at 7908 North State Highway 23 in Walkerton. f you could go back in time 60 years to visit small-town America, you would likely find scenes similar to those in “The Andy Griffith Show.” The economy was buoyed by small, specialty businesses like butcher shops, tailors, barber shops, book stores and groceries. The best of these not only provided excellent customer service while the business was open, but also played critical roles in the community by supporting local charities, and addressed customer comments and suggestions with grace. Due to the introduction of supermarkets and the 1980s recession, many of those businesses closed, to the detriment of the rural American economy. However, some small markets survived. Park ’N Shop in Culver has played an active role in the local community since 1960. David Rhodes, the third-generation owner of Park ’N Shop, grew up on Lake

Maxinkuckee and spent his summers working at the store. “I started out as a bagger,” he says. “Then it became semi-clear that I was going to try to run it, and I started taking on each department one by one, trying to learn it piece by piece so if I ever got myself into a scenario where I lost a major department head, I knew my way in and out of every department of every store.” Still a Lake Maxinkuckee resident, Rhodes takes great pleasure in being part of an economy still held up by small businesses. He plays an active role in the community as a philanthropist, annually donating to dozens of area charities, events and organizations. “There are very few donation requests that we turn down,” Rhodes says. Although it’s a relatively small store, Park ’N Shop has a wide variety of items. As much as Rhodes would like to offer his merchandise at supermarket prices, this remains impossible due to national pricing models. However, he works to THETHE LAKES MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER LAKES MAGAZINE / OCTOBER2020 2020/ /thelakesmagazine.com thelakesmagazine.com/ 13
says. “Think of it as A, B, C. We’ll never buy anything lower than a B, and when I can get A at a good price, I will.” The staff also offers seven varieties of sausage, all of which are roped onsite. The Polish sausage in particular is known as being deliciously authentic.
make sure his prices remain reasonable.
One of Rhodes’ favorite parts of running the store is helping customers behind the meat counter.
“We want to establish ourselves as a yearround place to get good, fresh meat and produce deals,” Rhodes says. Park ’N Shop is specifically known for its meat department, which serves only choice or prime options, all of which are cut or ground in-house. “There’s prime, choice and select, then a bunch of sub-grades below that,” Rhodes
“On a Friday night, there are people who come in who have no idea what they’re doing,” Rhodes says. “After talking about their preferences, I’ll say, ‘OK, this is what you’re going to take. I’ll season it for you, and you’re going to cook it for five minutes
on each side. Then tomorrow you’re going to come in, and you’re going to thank me for the best steak you’ve ever eaten.’ We always have a laugh, then that’s what happens. They come back and say, ‘My gosh, you were right!’ That’s what’s fun for me because it’s like talking to a friend who needs some guidance.” Even after work hours, Rhodes looks for ways to go above and beyond the call of duty for local residents. “Sometimes, I’ll see a good round of steaks come in,” he says. “If I see someone at dinner who I know likes that kind of steak, I’ll tap him on the shoulder and say, ‘You need to be at the store tomorrow and come get this stuff.’ I buy one for myself and take it home and cook it, and they’ll cook theirs. That interaction, helping customers, is fun.” Of the 25,000 items the store carries, several are stocked due to customer request.

“There are probably 200 to 300 items in this store that I carry for one specific customer,” Rhodes says. “They’re thrilled about it, and it’s no sweat off my back at all. If I can gain that one customer with just one item, it doesn’t only make good community sense, it makes good business sense.” Rhodes also owns Save A Lot stores in Knox and Rochester. However, Park ’N Shop is still the pride and joy of his family. “This one has the most variety, the most freedom, and the most work involved to keep it looking as good as it does,” Rhodes says. At the Culver location, Rhodes has more than twenty employees. He also relies heavily on his mother Cheryl, who is in charge of day-to-day operations at the store. His sister Stephanie manages the store’s Facebook page while being a mom
to 2-year-old Diana. “It would surprise me if Diana doesn’t end up working here,” Rhodes says with a grin. “She’s going to have to wait at least 10 years, though.” Rhodes’ primary goal is to please customers, and when he does so, it brings him great satisfaction. “The people who do appreciate us make it all worthwhile,” he says. “They do understand that we’re trying our hardest. It makes us really happy to have those who are loyal to us.” Park ’N Shop is located at 1105 North Lake Shore Drive in Culver. For more info, visit Facebook.com/parknshop3 and call 574-842-2450.

Miller’s Merry Manor A Reflection
Writer and Photographer / Dorothy Paul
Come along and let me tell you about the best little nursing home around. Having had a loved one at Miller’s Merry Manor in Culver for about six years, and having been there myself for rehabilitation after breaking my pelvis bone, I have seen it inside and out. Having to put my husband Robert in a nursing home was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I am in my 80s, and have had ups and downs in life as we all do. I fought to keep Robert home for many years until I needed help, and I know God was guiding me because Miller’s was the only nursing home with an opening when the time came. I called 911 for Robert when he could no longer get up and was too big for me to handle, and he went from the hospital to Miller’s, which made it easier. From that day on, I went every day to spend time with him. Robert had Alzheimer’s, and he had been diagnosed years before moving to Miller’s. I knew it is a slow disease and what we were headed for. I soon realized the people at Miller’s knew how to handle Alzheimer’s patients. They were so kind and loving, and they understood how hard the disease is on family. I also realized everyone there was helping each patient and their families, often without each family realizing how much they were trying to help. Everyone there was kind and caring, even the registered nurses. This is not always true in other nursing homes. I also saw how the residents look after each other, care

about each other, and treat each other like family. I often think that part of why many people don’t like nursing homes is because they are grieving over a loved one’s illness and want to blame someone. I saw how the staff at Miller’s is often one step ahead of certain problems that arise for residents. I soon saw how Robert’s needs were beyond my capabilities, and all I could do was visit every day so that he wasn’t alone during his illness. I went at his lunchtime and helped feed him, and went back to his room afterwords and stayed with him. We visited when he could still talk, and even after he no longer could, I could do all the talking easily. Robert was a walker, and would walk as long as he could. I could not walk for as long as he could, and would typically have to go home when I just couldn’t keep up. When I broke my pelvis bone, I did my rehab at Miller’s with my husband. What a blessing that while we were both in wheelchairs, the Miller’s staff members were kind enough to seat us at the same table for breakfast, lunch and supper. I cherish those weeks I had with Robert. When I recovered enough to be on a walker, I continued to go back

every day to be with him. Miller’s has the best activity department too, run by Courtney Artist. She is the best, and never forgets anyone. Robert wouldn’t take part in any activities, but she never forgot him, and always came to his room and asked him if he wanted to participate. She always makes holidays special for the residents, taking them shopping, out to eat, or to see Christmas lights. Of course Robert’s disease got worse, and when we could see that God was calling him home, the Miller’s staff came in his room with a CD and played gospel music softly. What a nice way to
leave and meet Jesus. Miller’s did so many little things to make Robert’s passing easy and peaceful, and they were thoughtful of his family too. I will never forget their kindness at Robert’s passing. I know I did the best I could for Robert, and Miller’s did too. I met some very special people there. Miller’s Merry Manor in Culver is a blessing to our community. The staff helps us care for our loved one when we no longer can, and they do it with grace and kindness. What more could we ask for?

FIND YOUR RIDE Lakeside Chevrolet is All About Customer Satisfaction
Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Tim Hare
Lakeside Chevrolet, a 175-car lot in northern Warsaw, has served several notable individuals from across the nation. “We’ve had professional basketball players come in to have their vans worked on,” says General Sales Manager Michael Kuhn. “Ben Higgins from ‘The Bachelor’ flew into the airport behind the store, and we loaned him an Explorer van for the day so that he could cruise around while he was on the show.” The five-star business is known around town for providing friendly and excellent service.
General Sales Manager Michael Kuhn THETHE LAKES MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER LAKES MAGAZINE / OCTOBER2020 2020/ /thelakesmagazine.com thelakesmagazine.com/ 21
“Customer service to me means that they’re going to come back,” Kuhn says. “It’s not selling the customer one car, it’s knowing that if we take care of them right on their very first car, then we’ll end up selling them seven or eight cars. Since I’ve been here, I’ve seen multiple customers buy multiple vehicles.” As a lifelong Chevy fan, Kuhn has been working his dream job at the business for the last nine years. “When I took this job, the biggest enticing part of the job was Chevrolet,” he says. “My dad was always a big Chevy guy, and my grandpa was too. Growing up, I’ve owned probably 60 Chevrolets. I love them. The product is great.” Working for a locally owned company is a huge plus, too. “It’s not owned by some big company out of
town,” Kuhn says. “It’s literally from a local guy. It’s always been local - locally owned, locally operated. There’s a good quality product at a good price.” One of the goals of the Lakeside Chevrolet team is to give back to the community, especially to the Warsaw Community High School Tigers basketball team. They also go the extra mile to help deserving individuals - customers in particular - when the opportunity arrives. They often do this by engaging in seemingly small opportunities that have a big impact. “There are a lot of little things that we do throughout the year - any way we can help,” Kuhn says. One way the staff does this is by giving discounts to local heroes including educators, first responders and members of the military. A similar discount is available for college students.

“There are so many different discounts that we can offer,” Kuhn says. “It’s not something Lakeside does, it’s something that Chevrolet does. We put [the discounts] on our website because we want everyone to know up front that we’re trying to get them the best deal possible.” The dealership offers a variety of makes and models. “We have everything in stock, and we can get anything too,” Kuhn says. Everyone at Lakeside Chevrolet tries to go beyond the call of duty when it comes to taking care of customers, whether it’s Vice President of Operations Chad Probst, Owner Tom Schilling, or anyone else on the team. “We want to make Warsaw happy and provide good customer service,” Kuhn says. “We’re pretty well known in the area for the condition of our vehicles.” Safety is their first priority. Before any car goes up for sale, it gets a 172-point inspection
onsite. Anything that doesn’t pass gets sent to auction. “The reconditioning of our used vehicles can be pretty strict, but our customers like that,” Kuhn says. “They like coming onto the lot knowing they won’t look at a car that maybe isn’t in the condition they were expecting.” Each car is kept as clean as it is safe. “All of our used vehicles get sanitized,” Kuhn says. “Also, we install Pulse. It’s a pulsating rear brake light that’s just a safety light. It’s to prevent rear collisions.” From the moment someone walks onto the lot, the sales team is eager to help them find exactly what they’re looking for. “Their main goal is to get the hot spots - what the customer is wanting,” Kuhn says. “If it’s safety, if it’s performance, if it’s convenience, if it’s luxury, we’re tailoring it to whatever the customer wants.”

Customers can also buy a car from the comfort of their own living room. On the company’s website, a customer can find a car, customize terms and get their credit application approved. “We have what’s called ‘Shop, Click, Drive,’” Kuhn says. “They just e-sign and we can deliver the car right to their house.” One of the Lakeside Chevrolet team’s goals is to keep customers happy and safe, even after they drive off the lot. One way they do this is by offering a lifetime warranty with each car they sell. “Lakeside is giving you the peace of mind that you have the lifetime powertrain warranty,” Kuhn says. The team is also willing to take anything as a trade-in. “The weirdest thing I think we’ve ever taken as a trade-in was a picnic table,” Kuhn says. “If anyone is shopping for a car and they have anything to trade, we’ll take it. We’ll work with them.”
The services offered at the business range from typical oil changes and tire replacement to specialty services. In the collision center, walk-ins are welcome.

Topeka Craftsman Customizes Fishing Rods for Local Anglers Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided
Many people who enjoy the outdoors claim to feel closer to God when taking part in activities that involve nature. Eugene Knepp combined a Bible phrase from Matthew 4:19 with his passion for fishing to create a name for his business. This Bible passage mentions “fishers of men.” Knepp’s business, Fishers of the
World, is a custom-made fishing rod business that operates out of a workshop at Knepp’s Topeka home. “I do custom-built fishing rods,” Knepp says, “It can be personalized to their favorite colors or their favorite thread design.” Fishing rods are easy to find in the area, but one that reflects the personality and style of the angler is unique. Knepp’s
customers can personalize the rod any way they want, from the color to the thread and thread design. “This isn’t your simple rod out of the store,” he says.
26 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2020 / thelakesmagazine.com
Knepp visited a friend who was doing the same thing in Michigan, and was intrigued. “I asked him to teach me how and get me started,” he says. As far as Knepp knows, he is the only tradesman providing these products locally. “It’s a new idea - a new product for the area,” he explains. “I’ve been doing this for two years and it is just now slowly taking hold.” The rods he makes range from those suited for ocean fishing to ice fishing and everything in between. “I do them all,” Knepp says. Different types of fishing require different rod lengths and specialized equipment. A fly fishing rod can be 15

feet long, while an ice fishing rod may be only 2 feet. The customization process involves sitting down with the customer to determine their needs. From that initial conversation, Knepp orders the parts he needs and begins the production process. It takes about five to six hours to craft a custom fishing rod, plus an additional six to 10 hours for the sealant to cure. Knepp is a longtime fisherman. As a small boy he would fish with his father, using an inexpensive rod purchased somewhere convenient. Now he realizes the difference that can be made by using a rod of higher quality. His rods are typically stronger than the standard variety found at chain stores. The rods also feature additional guides, which provides better stability when handling a big fish. The bright thread wraps and designs means an angler can spot their rod easily. A variety of thread colors are used to make the wrap, and this is one of the features that distinguish Knepp’s rods from many that are mass manufactured.

“I love the artwork that goes into each rod,” Knepp says. He recalls using his artist’s eye to complete a rod that a husband was purchasing for his wife. The challenge was to find the right thread color combination to coordinate with a yellow rod. Knepp’s choice was a charcoal color with gold accents. Knepp specializes in three thread wrap styles - olive leaf, letter wrap, and tiger wrap. The olive leaf style involves any two-color combination in which one thread is manipulated to resemble a leaf pattern. Letter wrap involves weaving a letter pattern into the base color, and takes about six hours. Tiger wrap begins with a black base and is personalized with

a color of the customer’s choice. It is wrapped loosely and then manipulated to create a one-of-a-kind design. A custom fishing rod ranges from approximately $100 to $200. The price depends on the materials and the time it takes to complete the custom design. Knepp also replaces guides and can handle other types of rod repairs. By day, Knepp works in an RV factory. He devotes his afternoon and evening hours, as well as weekend days, to the rod business. Knepp and his wife Ruth, who live on 11 acres with horses and dairy goats, have three children - Danelle Janean, 16, Lily Grace, 13, and Kylan Eric, 7. protective covering for the building. “It makes a seamless, rock-solid roof structure,” Burkholder says.
During that process, Burkholder will take a thermal energy picture of the wall to make sure the insulation is properly filling the wall.
When used as injection foam insulation, the material is injected straight into walls.
Spray foam works especially well with old farmhouses.
“It stays liquid as it falls down into the wall cavity,” Burkholder says. “That puddle stays there for about five or 10 seconds, then it starts to froth and bubble up, and fill the wall cavity.”
“Old farmhouses have a lot of 2”x4” stud walls, and they’re all crooked and uneven,” Burkholder says. “To put in any other kind of insulation is a challenge. Spray foam goes into all those crooked and uneven spaces,
and fills everything out.” The team at Heartland Enterprise has worked on a wide range of buildings. About half of their clients are commercial, with jobs ranging from roofing and interior insulation to restaurant and butcher shop cooler insulation. Heartland Enterprise’s commercial and residential roofs typically come with a 15-year extendable warranty, and a five-year maintenance contract. “Within that five-year contractable

YODER’S LOG & TIMBER PROS Nappanee-Based Company Has Mastered the Art of Log Home Building reputation for themselves based on good craftsmanship.
Writer / Angela Cornell Photography Provided
There is something so cozy about a well-built log cabin. Its warm, homespun atmosphere lends a certain life-giving nature to a building that is unparalleled in the construction world. They are also uncannily sturdy, having the ability to withstand hurricane winds and other natural disasters. According to Orva Yoder, the owner of Yoder’s Log & Timber Pro’s, log cabins make the best homes. “I think everybody should have a log home,” he says with a chuckle. “I think there’s a good country feeling in it.” This family business has built a
“It’s me and my three sons,” Yoder says. “We all take pride in what we do. That’s part of us — craftsmanship that’s good.” They also build other kinds of buildings as well, like pole barns, sheds, barns and more. Many of the logs that Yoder’s company uses for its building projects are up-cycled from dead standing trees out west. “When a forest fire goes through, it kills the tree, but it doesn’t harm the wood,” he says. “They get cut down and taken out of the way. It helps. If the old trees are taken away, the new growth can come up.”

Since the homes that Yoder and his sons build are made from whole logs, unless otherwise specified by a customer, the cabins are extremely energy efficient. In the insulation, that is measured by Resistance, or R-Value. The higher the R-Value number, the better the house blocks out unwanted airflow. “We use larger logs, so it’s an R-38 in the roof,” Yoder says. No two log homes built by Yoder’s crew are exactly the same. “It’s a custom-built home,” he says. At the beginning of the building project, Yoder, the client, and an architect work together to draw out the details of the dream home. Once the client is happy, the plans get sent to Mill Canyon Log Homes in Idaho or Wilderness Retreat Log Homes in Wisconsin. “They’re both so busy,” Yoder says. “It’s exactly the same thing, as far as how they put them together and how they’re cut and everything.” Once the timber mill has the order — or kit — filled, it’s sent back to Yoder Log & Timber Pro’s and the work begins. As the house goes up, the customer doesn’t have to worry about

finding subcontractors. “We get the heating and plumbing guys,” Yoder says. “We finish the homes, too. We put the roof on, we finish the inside, do all the trim work, the hardwood floors and the staining. We don’t have someone sub out this or sub out that. It’s just me and my boys. Once we’re done, they can move in.”
Unfortunately, thanks to poor workmanship by other companies, log cabins have a bad reputation for being difficult to maintain. According to Yoder, that doesn’t have to be the case if the home is built right. “Our homes are built with bigger overhangs and they’re protected

more than a lot of other homes are,” he adds. To give their customers peace of mind, Yoder and his crew offer maintenance contracts after the building is done. That includes replacing rotten logs, re-roofing, stripping and restraining and other restoration and maintenance jobs. “We don’t come in, build them, leave and never return,” Yoder says. “We’re there to re-stain them, maintain them for our customers.” They also offer these services to those whose homes were built by other contractors. “It doesn’t have to be ours,” he adds. The maintenance contracts are hassle-free for homeowners. He keeps
track of what work the house needs and when it’s required. When that time comes, Yoder contacts the customer and schedules a time to get it done. The contract can also include routine inspections, if the homeowner prefers. “I tell them that we’ll be back in a couple of years, just look at it, and if there’s a problem, we take care of it,” he says. “It isn’t like they’re paying us a lot of money for it. If they keep it up like that, they save. We’re here for the customers.” Yoder’s Log and Timber Pro’s is an Amish business based in Nappanee since 1995. Here at The Lakes Magazine we take pride in promoting positive, current and even historical content. Many of the advertisers that have reached out to us have been in business many years but have never advertised before. Today, we have a nice collective gathering of the region’s best wordof-mouth businesses. The Lakes Magazine reaches over 69,000 people that read this magazine for businesses and services to patronize locally. We cannot accept all new advertisement requests, but we do have openings for certain types of trades and businesses. John Lewandowski Publisher: The Lakes Magazine (574)249-9217 John@townepost.com
TALK OF THE TOWN Visitors Can Find Plenty to Explore in Rentown Writer & Photographer / Angela Cornell
There are many Amish settlements in Northern Indiana, including Shipshewana, Bremen, Goshen, Nappanee, and Rochester. In many respects they’re similar, but each one is a unique community. Take Rentown, for instance. This small community, halfway between Bremen and Nappanee, doesn’t even have its own zip code. What it lacks in size, however, it makes up for in good old-fashioned flavor.

Co-Owner Jesse Jordan
STAYING POWER Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
Jesse Jordan and Nick Davis grew up in Knox. When it was time to choose a name for their service business, the choice was obvious Hometown Power Wash, Inc. “We grew up here together as kids,” Jordan says. “Now our kids are being raised up in this community too. This is the town that we want to give back to.” The two friends, and now business partners, became acquainted because their parents were friends. They grew up, went to school together and maintained a friendship that continues. Both are behind the success of their business, which provides a service to homeowners and businesses in the region. This is year two for Hometown Power Wash. The first year was focused on getting their name out. “It started as a side business,” Jordan says. “Now it has taken off so much so that I am doing it full time.” The company provides a service to homeowners and commercial clients by bringing power washing equipment, appropriate detergent and personal expertise to job sites. The company’s service area runs from Bass Lake and Valparaiso to Warsaw and Columbia City - anything within 75 to 90 miles from home, according to Jordan. Power washing is a method used to clean mildew, dirt and debris from exterior walls, decks, patios and other surfaces using a pressurized stream of water.
THETHE LAKES MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER LAKES MAGAZINE / OCTOBER2020 2020/ /thelakesmagazine.com thelakesmagazine.com/ 49
The method has been around for decades. In fact, Jordan worked with his uncle about 20 years ago doing what he is doing now. “I liked the aspect of helping someone’s property look like what it was when it was new,” Jordan says. “With all the construction business out there, there was nothing in our area that covered cleaning homes like we are doing.” Jordan says he still enjoys the satisfaction of restoring something that has been neglected, whether it is a home or a business. Recent commercial jobs included the exterior of a chain restaurant, a convenience store and gas station, and structures at a country club. Hometown Power Wash is advantageous for property owners because of the quality of the cleaning, according to Jordan. The approach can save time and effort, because the cleaning does not have to be done as often.

New technology provides better options for clearing grime and debris from homes and businesses. New products help to limit damage and bring about a better result. One of these industry improvements was the development of the soft wash system. This uses more cleaning products more effectively than simply using the powerful pressure of water, and Jordan says it is less damaging. For example, it eliminates the chance of blowing siding off of a structure or ruining a deck because of highlypressurized water. Jordan, Davis and their crew can determine which technique, which pieces of equipment, and the proper approach for each job. The heavyduty machine used by the crew is more effective than non-commercialgrade washers. “There is a lot of education that we had to do for ourselves to learn,” Jordan says. “The last thing we want to do is show up to a project and be ignorant and do

This means there is little risk of damage to the building from using a ladder. Power washing is also effective in cleaning graffiti, Jordan says. He took care of some cleanup at a local park this year. Jordan partnered with the mayor, suggesting a chemical that could remove the graffiti. He then donated his time to apply the chemical and power wash the vandalism away.
Customer service is important to the business. Jordan says the company offers a one-year guarantee.

When the opportunity arose to buy Daily Bread Market, he took it. “This allowed us to make our own market for our lettuce,” he says. “We grow bib lettuce, French crisp, romaine, oak leaf, leaf lettuce. Those are the main ones.” Thanks to the way Chupp grows his lettuce, he sells it year-round.

Lamar Chupp, the owner of Amish grocery Daily Bread Market, grew up understanding the benefits of eating healthy. “I grew up on a farm, so understanding where food came from was always a part of my life,” he says.
His healthy living drive extends beyond the produce section. Throughout the store, there are several healthy food options, like kombucha, made in-house, and Zevia, a soft drink that is sweetened with sugar alternative, stevia. They’re even an authorized distributor for Trim Healthy Mama, a health and wellness advocacy plan.
However, it wasn’t until he and his wife became vendors at local farmers’ markets that he really started getting involved in the health food world.
Daily Bread Market has a popular in-house bakery where they make a variety of items, including cookies, regular and gluten-free granola, muffins and breads. Seasonally, they also serve pies and flavored breads, all of which are extremely popular.

Daily Bread Market gets to be a key component of healthy community life, too. “A lot of times, when we get together as family or friends, we always eat. The business was founded in 1971 by Bob and Freda Roe. They opened their doors to the Rochester community on 8th Street, offering a selection of flooring, lighting and interior design choices. The Roes’ son Bill stepped up to take charge of the business in 1986, expanding in 1990 to a larger location on 9th Street.
Rochester Business Puts Decades of Experience Into Interior Design Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Lana King
Home interior remodeling can be an anxiety-producing task. The owners and staff at the House of Decor in Rochester are ready to send homeowner anxiety and outdated decorating trends packing.
“Interior design is how we experience space, by combining art with science and math to achieve an aesthetically pleasing environment,” explains Owner Bill Roe. For almost four decades, the Roe name has been synonymous with interior design.
The expansion included new lines of interior design products. This move allowed customers to access products from additional suppliers in many different areas. “We added products like flooring covers, window treatments and wall tile,” Roe says. The House of Decor provides flooring, tile, drapery, blinds and other interior resources. The company doesn’t just supply the materials - it also supplies the expertise. The business employs

14 people including installers and design consultants. Roe often travels from job site to job site, in addition to taking measurements at client locations. The company’s clients get access to a team of talented designers and installers who want to make each space the best it can be. Designers access the most up-to-date information on trends, and understand how interior design can change psychological factors such as mood. Even small changes such as paint and fabric colors or room layout can provide a fresh perspective, and make a person’s environment more comfortable and personable. There are two priorities in dealing with a customer, Roe says. These are customer satisfaction, and understanding the needs of the project. These needs involve specifics such as accurate measurements, color scheme and textures the client prefers.

“When consulting a client, we need information like measurements, which room the product goes in, if they have a color preference, type of flooring, and style,” Roe says. “If they do not know, we use our creative skills to help build a plan. We also ask whether or not they need the product installed.” Most of the company’s clients are lakefront homeowners in Culver and Rochester. The client base has increased over time, providing an impressive portfolio for Roe, and this trend is expected to continue. The company’s flooring products consistently sell well. Roe offers hardwood, vinyl, tile and carpeting. Several well-known national manufacturers are among the lines offered at the store. Carpeting in particular remains popular for both the comfort factor and sound absorption. The House of Decor sells

“We install tile in a number of applications such as showers with shelving and seating options, floors, walls, and backsplashes,” Roe says.

“Flooring, tile, drapery and blinds are the products we sell that customers can order and install themselves,” Roe says. For these customers, the House of Decor experts offer some advice - pay attention to lighting and the other specific needs of the project.
From window shades to drapery fabrics, clients can easily update the look of their window treatments at the House of Decor.

ltimately, P & J Antiques and Treasures is here today because of co-owner Pat Camp’s big sister, Dora Bell.
it is helpful to have a partner. When Camp purchased the vendor mall, she spoke to a good friend from the antique world, Julie Stamper, about joining her. “She’s very good-hearted and businessminded,” Camp says. “I couldn’t have a better partner. We just click.”
“When I was 17, she introduced me to antiques. She owned a store and I was her helper. She taught me different things about antiques,” Camp says. Much has changed since then, including the passing of Dora Bell. However, Camp’s passion for antiques has only grown. “It’s always in my heart. It’s my passion,” she says. Camp’s interest in antiques eventually became a side-job. She attended auctions, then sold her findings. Eventually, she was given the option of buying a vendor mall in Plymouth. Not only is it the perfect way for Camp to live out her enthusiasm for antiques, it’s also a way for her to remember her sister. “I honor her everyday by doing it,” she says. Although it’s important to love your job and be good at it, especially as a business owner,
Although they work together on every project, they have their areas of expertise. Camp keeps P & J’s Antiques and Treasures well-organized, a nearly full-time job in and of itself. “She has such a flair for decoration,” Stamper says. “When you come in, that’s all her.” Stamper inspires Camp with new ideas and keeps the books, often working after everyone else has gone home.
They have nearly 40 vendors and more to come, all of whom sell quality items. “We like people to have antiques, collectibles, farmhouse-type stuff, refinished furniture that’s been repurposed,” Stamper adds. The store holds an intriguing variety of merchandise, far beyond what is commonly considered “antiques.” “We have a lady who sells essential oils and essential soaps,” Stamper says. “We have furniture and kitchenware.” They also have a “mancave” to appeal to the men who come in, whether on their own or with their wives.
“When we first took over, this store was full of glassware. We called it foo-foo stuff. It was all lady stuff,” Stamper says with a chuckle. “We “I close the store at six and she’s in here doing added a mancave and pulled stuff from the paperwork,” Camp says. “I’m running the store, she’s backing me up with the advertising. vendors’ booths that are more guy-stuff. The guys, when they come in, have a place to go.” It’s a lot. Calling people to get this done,

The inventory at P & J’s is constantly changing. “You have to. You can’t be stagnant,” Camp says. “There’s a huge variety in here.” Their customers love that aspect, since they will always find something new when they walk through the door. The vendors appreciate it, too. “When we let new vendors in, we try to make sure that they have something different than the other vendors. We don’t want to cut the vendors’ throats by letting them have the same exact thing,” Stamper says. P & J’s hosts events periodically through the year. “We want to keep different stuff going on, so you keep your customers coming back,” Stamper says. One continual event is the bi-monthly flea markets in the summer and early fall. “It’s out on the front lawn,” Stamper says. “Whatever you want to put out there. They take care of their own, bring their own set-up, display their own stuff. Even if it’s yard sale stuff, we’re fine with that.” Another reason to visit P & J Antiques and Treasures is that they recently put in a smoothie bar. “We don’t have that around here. We have the space back there, we have the bar, we have all the stuff right there,” Camp says. “We’re pretty excited about our smoothie bar.” There are 10 smoothie flavors on the menu, and they are made from all-natural ingredients, some of which are dairy-free and sugar-free. Camp and Stamper included those specifically for diabetics and those on special diets. P & J’s Antiques and Treasures is located at 900 W. Jefferson St. in Plymouth. Visit them Monday through Thursday 10-5, or Friday and Saturday 10-4. Potential vendors can call them at (574) 341-9660 or by emailing PJAntiques@yahoo.com. THE GRAY MILL
Local Store Is a One-Stop-Shop For Your Home Interior Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Jubilee Edgell

n 1952, when Bill Graybeal started The Gray Mill, his goal was to build custom furniture and upholstery items for his clients. By the end of the decade, the business was evolving. “He really loved building furniture, but he saw a really great opportunity for retail,” explains granddaughter and third-generation co-owner, Mollie Graybeal. “When he got his first storefront, he got the furniture and accessories, and he just expanded it from there.” Ever since then, The Graybeal family has concentrated on providing its customers’ interior decorating needs with quality furnishings. “We have been built from our beginning as a one-stop-shop for your home interior,” explains Graybeal. In the last 68 years, this family has slowly expanded the business, both in repertoire and in space, each generation adding value to the business. Today, The Gray Mill boasts 16,000 sq. ft. of the highest quality furniture for all areas of the house. “Between my Dad [Mike], my Uncle Bill, and myself, we have more than 100 years of experience in the industry,” Graybeal adds. The Gray Mill has always been known to have the highest quality. “The one thing that we hear continuously is, ‘I still have furniture that I got from you 40 years ago.’ Or ‘That bedroom suite I bought lasted forever!’ ‘I didn’t need to go

Almost everything they offer is made in the USA and comes with a warrantee. “We are about giving back value and having a wide range of budget prices,” Graybeal says. Offering all domestic products is vital to Graybeal. “When you buy American in your furniture, you get better, period. It goes all the way down to the nuts, the bolts, and the washers. Being American makes the biggest difference for furniture,” she says. As an added bonus, much of the inventory is made right here in the Hoosier state. There are several things that set The Gray Mill apart from its competitors, like “The Gray Mill Experience,” something that returning customers know they can trust and appreciate. “If you’ve ever gone shopping for furniture before and you felt very uncomfortable, you’re not alone,” Graybeal says. “That happens a lot. I’ve heard time and time again that most consumers aren’t going into furniture stores and getting a lot of educated help. At The Gray Mill, your experience is going to be much different.

Our salesmanship is truly catered to each specific customer’s home situation and needs.” From the time that a customer walks through the door, a sales associate will meet them and ask them questions about their lifestyles, needs, preferred styles and budget range. There is even an interior design service available for those who want it. After that, the customer is taken to the showroom and will be shown pieces that fit their specifications. “It’s truly a customer service-oriented experience,” Graybeal adds. “We don’t truly sell furniture. We assist in selecting furniture. We work very hard to treat people like they are family members.” At The Gray Mill, a customer can find more than the tables, bedroom sets, chairs and sofas. They also have linens, décor, accessories, mattresses and more. “We offer the full window treatment selection, all made in America, with professional installation,” Graybeal says.

“We also offer professional installation of all of our floor coverings as well.” They even design custom bathrooms, showers and backsplashes. Graybeal obviously loves her job. She enjoys working with the customers, running the interior decorating services and more. But to ask her, the best part of the job is working around the furniture day in and day out. “I love furniture,” she says. “Every day, I get to shop and rearrange furniture. I get to shop for customers and it’s all a new challenge. Every vignette I’m going to arrange or buy for is a new challenge, just like every home I get to redesign.” View The Gray Mill’s catalog online at thegraymill.com or visit them in person at 500 E.
