Growing up on a farm offers young, inquisitive minds plenty of opportunities to explore. Floyd Graber found his niche
in life relatively early, as he was naturally drawn to welding and working with metal.
Graber has found success parlaying his talents into an enterprise called
Premier Metalworks. Working as the sole proprietor at his rural Wolcottville farmstead, Graber has elevated the craftsmanship of custom barn elements into a product line that perfectly meshes

practicality and artistry.
Graber has been overseeing the operations of the business since the fall of 2018, and credits a family project
he was entrusted with in New Paris for “kind of putting me on the map.” From the beginning, Graber has been firmly committed to quality, as well as the principle that horse stalls should be
appealing to the eye and to the animals housed within.
He has a cycle that he follows while executing a project, which begins with

an idea and is followed by a buildout, installation and final inspection. The process generally includes the selection of doors, hardware, tracking, latching locks, guards, and finish types. He offers a brochure to potential customers, and a few of the installation package arrangements are christened with family names, such as the Miller Project, the Troyer Project and the Lehman Project. Graber is anticipating an updated, fullcolor brochure in the coming weeks.
One aspect of Graber’s custom work is his design of European stall fronts. “Not a lot of people have seen them yet,” he says. “They are functional, elegant, and they offer an open and relaxed type of barn. I can do everything from design, drawing and finishing, and then I do subcontract certain parts.”
Because the European stalls are so detailed and forward-thinking, Graber is keenly drawn to them. “I’m always

innovative and I’m always adding new ideas,” he says. “Quality and service are my number-one goals, and the safety of the horses. I like building the European [stalls] because they’re always a challenge.”
Graber is also very attuned to the need for low-maintenance products, including the use of high-end materials in the construction process. “I’m in the process of adding standard sizes to be able to finish the projects quicker, and make them more cost effective,” he says.
As with any custom work, each project requires flexibility and a timeline that will accommodate every phase of the installation. Graber says in early 2022, building components were difficult to receive in a timely fashion, on account of national shipping and receiving issues. Thankfully the supply and demand ratios seem to be back on track, he notes, with such critical materials as steel becoming more plentiful.
Graber is optimistic for growth in the coming year, as word of his craftsmanship and reputation continues to resonate, hopefully beyond the regional realm. “That’s my goal,” he says. “I’d love to go outside this area. Even though we currently work throughout northern Indiana, I’m hoping to expand. I’m always looking to extend my services.”
To schedule an appointment for a consultation, call 260-854-2076 to leave a voicemail. Graber will strive to respond within one hour, and will also take measurements and design ideas during the initial visit.

“I look at all of these and other martial arts as art forms,” Smith says.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu has its roots in a traditional Japanese style, and is focused on combat sport maneuvers such as grappling, ground fighting and submission holds, with the goal of taking the opponent to the ground, controlling the opponent, gaining a dominant position, and using techniques to force submission via joint locks or chokeholds. It is one of the martial arts used in mixed martial arts competitions.
Muay Thai is another combat fighting style that utilizes a standing start and incorporates the use of fists, elbows, knees and shins. It is a common part of kickboxing because of these techniques.
Fighting often gets a bad rap, but with the guidance of a skilled and trained coach, it is a sport that can build strength, confidence and even character. Travis Smith, the owner of Hybrid Combat Club in Plymouth, helps others achieve their best in this physical activity, at which he has trained for more than a decade.
“Fighting in a controlled environment is fun,” Smith says. “Fighting in an uncontrolled environment is chaos. The vast majority of people don’t like chaos.”
Hybrid Combat Club specializes in creating a safe place for participants to practice and develop skills in a variety of martial arts styles. Members of the club hone their skills in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, muay
Smith himself was a mixed martial arts fighter, known as Travis the Hybrid in the Michiana Fight League. He has trained under coaches in the area including Todd Brown, an Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.

Smith realizes that this form of physical sport may not be right for everyone. It can provide benefits for anyone at any age.
“Everybody comes together on the mat,” Smith says.
Whether it’s for competition, for exercise or to learn self-defense, Hybrid Combat Club is open to all interest levels and ages. The youth wrestling club is open to children in kindergarten through eighth grade, and membership also includes people in their 50s and beyond.
The training is physically demanding, so anyone considering taking up combat sports should weigh the decision against their current health. For the right person, combat sports can improve strength and agility. They can also boost confidence, discipline, respect for others’ perspectives, and respect for the sports themselves.

Tucked away in the small town of Nappanee is a hidden gem of natural health. It’s not new - Founder Dr. Mark Hutsell has been helping patients heal naturally for more than 38 years. His patients value something outside the traditional model of medicinea loving, personalized experience combined with cutting-edge care. When they arrive, they experience gentle techniques designed to balance the body, nourish the system
and allow the natural restoration of optimal health.
Many patients find themselves no longer needing medications to manage common health concerns as their bodies return to their God-given balance and immunity. This balance releases toxic weight, increases energy and produces a healthier life. Their patients are not only local. Patients come from Goshen, Elkhart, Plymouth, Warsaw and South Bend, with some traveling as far
as Granger and Edwardsburg, Michigan, to experience Hutsell Chiropractic’s unique approach to community care at the office and virtually.
Mark felt drawn to his work from a young age. “I remember as a child going to doctors with my precious mother, who was very sick,” he says. “Watching our family navigate her conventional treatment with drugs and surgery to mask the symptoms left us with the dire feeling of hopelessness and

fear. It wasn’t until chiropractic care was introduced to our family that I remember feeling hope. With the right education and support, we were improving our diet, juicing, resetting and balancing our bodies naturally. It was a positive health improvement for my mother and a major paradigm shift for our family. It was working and we were convinced, so much so that I have spent the rest of my life passing this gift on to my family and community.”
Mark believes he was called to serve others, and his patients would agree. “I felt called to help offer the world health and wellness for the body, soul and spirit,” he says.
A feverish learner, he studied natural modalities for restoring and maintaining health. He became a chiropractor after graduating from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1984 and opened Hutsell Chiropractic that same year, focusing on pain relief, stress relief, nutrition and weight management. and healing was contagious. In 2020 it became clear that both of his children shared his calling and would join him in the same practice. “It was heartwarming to see my children so impassioned with health and wellness,” he says. “We are quite the team together.”
“Being born into the chiropractic lifestyle gave me insight into its power as a platform to create health, share inspiration, give hope and shift paradigms,” says Mark’s son, Dr. Jordan Hutsell. “I didn’t choose chiropractic medicine - chiropractic chose me.”
Jordan graduated from Life University in March of 2022 and joined the family practice. His passion for pediatric and family care was a natural extension of the Hutsell Chiropractic offerings. While family care has always been the focus, Jordan’s specialized knowledge in pregnancy and pediatric care, Quantum Neurology (physical therapy for the nervous system) and nutrition were welcome additions.

Chiropractic Care + Cutting-Edge Nutrition + Frequency Medicine = Natural Healing, Balance and Optimal Health
When you take two generations of lifelong learners, a family with a mission of serving others by finding the root cause of disease and empowering the body’s natural ability to heal, you have something exceptional.
They work together like a well-oiled machine with a whole-person approach. This means they search to find the underlying causes of disease, discomfort and pain instead of just treating the symptoms. Hutsell Chiropractic is a leader in the health revolution using muscle testing, energy and frequency.
“Many treatments or medications are not designed to heal the root cause or condition causing our symptoms,” Mark says. “They simply mask the symptoms by repressing them temporarily. When we take medication for a headache, the headache might go away, but it is likely to return later. This is because we did not treat what was causing the headache. We only masked the pain. When we work to find what is causing symptoms, we can treat the root cause, and prevent further deterioration of your overall health.
That is our goal. That is our whole-person approach.”
It sounds simple, and in truth, it is. With the proper knowledge and support, simple lifestyle changes help restore and maintain our God-given ability to heal, resolve root causes of disease and thrive.
Take a moment to stop in and see for yourself. Meet the Hutsells and their caring team. You will forget you are experiencing cutting-edge health restoration. It will just feel like being home.

Duane Kuhns was a well-established employee of a rising local company when
those initial flashes of inspiration came to his mind.
Kuhns was fortunate to have a steady, secure job close to home in Nappanee,
gaining a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the field of utility trailer manufacturing. He was an integral part of the workforce with a growing business called Aluminum Trailer Company, or

spanning 12 years, Kuhns made a leap of
faith. He was finally ready to parlay his natural abilities and range of skills into something more. Something that would upgrade and revolutionize the medium of trailer manufacturing into works of custom craftsmanship.
So, Kuhns formed a partnership with his brother, Steven, and together, the brothers launched Precision Custom Services in the spring of 2022. Their mission is to offer repairs and customization to a vast array of trailers.

“We can handle any type of repairs, both exterior and interior, and we can install cabinetry, plumbing, basically anything that goes on inside or outside of the trailers,” Duane Kuhns says.
Ultimately, the goal of Precision Custom Services is to serve as a one stop shop for whatever needs a potential customer would have. The list of amenities that the Kuhns duo can install in a unit includes custom lighting, kitchen outfitting, doors, ladder racks, welding repairs, and far more.
Thus far, Kuhns says, much of their influx of work has come from regional clients, but they have been entrusted with projects from as far away as New York. They are grateful and appreciative of the forward momentum through which their new enterprise has been driven. Yet at the same time, “Starting a brand-new business takes time. Right now, we’re just working
part-time, but I’m hoping to go full-time next year,” Kuhns says.
Another vision that Kuhns hopes to see come to fruition in 2023 is the creation of a small shop, something that Kuhns can have on site, so that customers can stop in and purchase parts. Kuhns continues to harbor optimism that their specialized and individualized focus, along with their pledge to design the dreams of their clients, will keep things on the rise for their countryside business. And with that mindset, Precision Custom Services seems destined to develop into a venture that is a step ahead and a step above.
To schedule a consultation with Precision Custom Services, call Kuhns at (574) 354-1384 or send an e-mail to precisionservices@ibyfax.com. The business is located at 27601 County Road 50, just north of Nappanee.

EXPLORE ALL THAT TEA CAN DO FOR YOU
by New Kitchen Store Photography Provided
“Thank you, but I don’t like tea…”
Wait, what? You don’t like tea? You mean you have tried over 1,000 teas and you don’t like any? You’ve tried them hot and you’ve tried them cold, and you don’t like a single one? Don’t you understand that there are an astonishing number of health benefits to this simple drink? This is a beverage for all generations. Tea can enhance your health and well-being.
Not only is tea a phenomenal beverage, but you can also cook with it. How about adding it as a dry rub on your choice meat for the grill? Add some to your batter for your muffins or waffles. Tea also makes a great rinse for your hair. It can also soothe your skin. Come in to New Kitchen Store and browse through our teas. We will even brew a cup for you while you shop - just ask us.
Let’s take a look at different types of tea. White, green, oolong, black and pu-erh (such a fun word to say) - these all come from the camellia sinensis plant. The processing of the plants determine what type it will be. Included in the tea mix would be rooibos, matcha, chai and herbal teas.
Matcha is the whole leaf (minus stems and veins). It is then ground into powder form, making it rich in fiber and vitamins. Matcha can also enhance mood and aid in concentration.
Herbal tea includes herbs, spices and plants blended together for an herbal infusion - now that sounds like an exotic drink! Now, let’s take a look at some of the benefits of tea.
Antioxidants in tea help protect brain cells and free radicals.
Polyphenols in green tea may improve bone quality. This tea provides the richest health benefits. It has polyphenols, flavonoids, vitamins E, C, A, B2, D - plus, it may help to reduce cholesterol by lowering blood lipids. Do your own research on this powerhouse. You will be amazed at the benefits it provides.
Polyphenols in black tea may help to inhibit bacteria growth in the mouth.
Matcha tea may help to fight cancer, improve digestion and help the skin. Matcha also contains anti-aging properties. It does contain caffeine, but you won’t come crashing down after you drink it, for it contains L-theanine and provides for a continuous energy boost throughout the day.

Tea will last for years if you store it properly. Store tea in a cool, dark place. Make sure it is sealed properly so it won’t absorb any odors.
Here are some fun and interesting facts on tea…
Grouchy? Drink chamomile and lavender. Insomnia? Chamomile can help to bring you into slumber land.
Sore throat? Oolong or green tea can help to reduce inflammation (adding honey can increase the benefits and healing).
Stressed? Go for black tea. Add a touch of honey or lemon if you wish. The amino acid called L-theanine may help to induce a calmer, more relaxed feeling.
Spider/bug bite? Soak a tea bag in hot water and then apply it to the bite (do this a few times during the day). Tea contains antiinflammatory and antibacterial properties. You can also give this a try for poison ivy.
Now for a little tea etiquette…
Don’t let your teaspoon crash against your bone china cup and don’t leave your spoon in your cup - that is what your saucer is for. Make sure the spoon handle is in the same direction as your

cup handle.
When you are done with your tea, place your spoon in your cup. If you are hoping for more, place your spoon on the right side of your saucer.
No need to hold your pinky out - that is now considered to be snooty!
So how about a cup of tea? Drink it, eat it, beautify with it or soothe with it. Find all your tea and tea implements at New Kitchen Store, located at 330 Liberty Street in Walkerton. Call 574-5862745 or visit newkitchenstore.com for more information.

LEGACY
Samantha Towne and Shanna Hazen are cousins, but also good friends who share the same values concerning education. Thanks to them and other supportive families, Rochester area parents now have an option to send their children to a private Christian school where the curriculum is based on Biblical truths. Legacy Christian Academy, located at 5288 North Old US Highway 31, is halfway through its first year.
The Academy is not affiliated with any church and operates independently. Towne serves as the director while Hazen is the head secretary and assistant director. Both had the opportunity to attend a private Christian school while growing up.
“My husband and I graduated from a private Christian school in early 2000s,” Samantha Towne says. At one point while I was growing up, there were five private Christian schools in

the Fulton County area. By the time we had a child of our own, there was only one remaining and it only accepted students from its own church. Starting a Christian school is something I wanted to do for a while; it had been on my heart and mind for a few years. Then in the summer of 2021, Shanna stepped in.”
At the time, Hazen, who has nine children, had been homeschooling for over eight years. In May of 2019, her second to youngest son, then two years old, was diagnosed with cancer. With her threemonth old baby in tow, Hazen continued to homeschool throughout her toddler’s treatment. She used FaceTime from his hospital room to teach her children who were at home. It wasn’t an easy task and she wished there had been an educational alternative where the teachings fell in line with her family’s beliefs. She is so grateful that her son is now in remission and attends kindergarten.

“God has been so good to us. I wanted to give back to the community. There were so many people in the community that were homeschooling but wished there was another choice,” Hazen says.
“I was sort of shocked that Shanna wanted to do something other than homeschooling since she had done it for so long and was so
committed to it,” Towne says. “At the time my youngest was in preschool and my other two children were attending Columbia. We were happy with Columbia, but I felt the Lord tugging at my heart to do something different. I was thinking of homeschooling for the 2021-22 year,” she says.
In the fall of 2021, Hazen and Towne began
to homeschool together. During that time, they did a lot of planning and gradually transitioned to the way they would run the school. They were able to rent space from the Geneva Center Retreat, Camp and Conference Center in Rochester. The school opened in August of 2022 with 28 students spanning from kindergarten through 12th grade. Curriculum is provided

from the A.C.E. company along with textbooks and materials from Akeba. Both businesses are rooted in Christian values. The Academy’s teachers are not just mothers of students, but educators from the community who want to teach with a Biblical prospective and believe in the school’s mission.
“It’s not a one room school; there are separate classrooms for all grade levels and a typical day begins with pledges, scripture memorization and prayer requests. Older students switch classes. We have a retired public school physical education teacher who volunteers to teach P.E. each Monday. We have art class on Friday and offer extra classes such as library and Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) classes,” Towne says.
Every Wednesday, two chapel services are held. For students in kindergarten to sixth grade, biblical songs are sung. The services for older students are led by volunteer pastors from area churches. Remarks are tailored to dovetail the yearlong Bible memorization plan.
Enrollment applications are available on the school’s website. The Academy operates on funds generated from modest tuition and efforts are made to keep it affordable. Also on the website is a donate button. There is some scholarship money available which has been donated from several community churches.
“Our mascot is a crusader- someone who rallies for change,” Towne says. “The logo has a helmet, shield and sword which represent the armor of God. The name Legacy Christian Academy reflects the fact that this school is more than just for our own kids. We want to leave a legacy that will last, not something that would close when our kids are grown. One thing that has really touched me is that kids just genuinely love being here. It is a safe place with a great atmosphere.”
Legacy Christian Academy is located at 5288 North Old US Highway 31 in Rochester. You can reach the Academy at (574) 835-4961 or visit their website at legacy-christian.org.

CUSTOMERS COUNT ON QUALITY AND VARIETY AT LAMBRIGHT ALUMINUM

BY SIX MILE WELDING
Norm Mishler, co-owner of Lambright Aluminum by Six Mile Welding in LaGrange, says he enjoys owning a family-operated business.
He treasures the time he gets to spend at a business that everyone in his family loves.
“My wife, Katie, is a co-owner of the business,” Mishler says. “She works very hard to make this the successful business it is. She does a wonderful job.”
Mishler notes that four of their children work at Lambright Aluminum.
44 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2023 / TownePost.com
“Our son, Myron, is responsible for our production,” Mishler says.
“He has a lot of duties that he is able to perform very well. Our daughter, Loretta, is responsible for all of our aluminum orders and processing the inventory, and all of the shipping.”
Mishler also has twin sons, Dale and Daryl, who serve as welders at Lambright Aluminum. They also thoroughly enjoy their work.
“I also have two nephews and one niece that work here,” Mishler says. “My father, John, also works here, and he punches holes. I handle everything that is done on the aluminum side of the business. We have a total of 11 employees.”
Mishler started Six Mile Welding, the welding side of the business, in 2005.
“I worked in the RV business at Keystone RV in Goshen, Indiana, for a while before I started my business,” he says. “I did not see a future in the RV factory so I decided it was time to go out on my own.”
Mishler started the Six Mile Welding side of the business in a little hog barn.

“I previously had a hog business,” Mishler says. “The prices on the hog market fell in the 1990s so it was time to do something else. Welding is something that has always fascinated me, and I decided it was something I could do more of. We just started out slow with the welding side of the business and it grew from there.” Mishler was fortunate to have a steady workload.
“We also got busy making chairs for Lambright Comfort Chairs and that was great,” he says.
Mishler eventually took over Lambright Aluminum from Owner Raymond Lambright. “I took two different companies and combined them,” Mishler says. “We have a lot of high-quality
aluminum products to choose from. We are the leading welding and fabrication specialists in the area.”
Mishler notes that this includes a lineup of hose reels that are 100% aluminum or stainless steel. “No part will rust,” he says. “We have cart-style and wall-mount-style reels that are excellent.”

Lambright Aluminum also makes bike racks, buggy trailers and play carts for kids.
“Kids love them,” Mishler says of the carts. “They enjoy pushing and pulling them. They are especially popular with smaller children. We also make generator carts and we can make them in three different sizes. We also make lawn and garden carts.”
Mishler notes that their mailboxes are also popular. “We make them

We also make folding step stools, wheelbarrows, and wood carts to haul firewood. They are all aluminum. Ninety-five percent of our work is aluminum.”
Mishler says he has been blessed with regular customers who praise their work and keep returning to buy more. “We have some really good-size accounts and that has really helped the business grow to where it is today,” he says.

SIMPLY STYLISH BUTTERFLY BOUTIQUE IN PLYMOUTH TREATS PATRONS LIKE FRIENDS
Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
Watching a butterfly flitter about in nature is a wonderful experience. Butterflies also often carry emotional and spiritual connections. That is the reason that Laura Mann named her Plymouth clothing store after butterflies.
“After my mother passed away in 2012, butterflies kept showing up at important events in my life - my daughter’s wedding, my son’s graduation,” Mann says. “Mom was clearly making her presence known, so I decided to call the store Butterfly Boutique.”
Mann opened the store in November of 2020 by renting a small space inside another location, Thistle and Cove, a vendor market located in downtown Plymouth. She moved into her current location on Michigan Street in April.
Mann says downtown Plymouth is an ideal location, from both a business and personal point of view.
“Downtown Plymouth merchants have been working hard to revitalize the area and I wanted to be a part of it,” Mann says. “Plymouth is my hometown and I love seeing the hustle and bustle return to downtown.”
A lifelong resident of Plymouth, Mann has found a career in public service. Her positions have included a 911 dispatcher, the victim-assistance director and, currently, the promotion of the city coordinator for the City of Plymouth. These roles have given her a unique perspective on people and on the progress the city has made in developing its downtown area.
Part of being a business owner is meeting and greeting customers, and running a small business in a small town is an added benefit for owners like Mann. Small-business owners have a different philosophy about their business and the community than some chain stores or big retail centers. The connection Mann makes with her customers is one of the many benefits she receives from Butterfly Boutique.
“I love becoming friends with folks that come into the store,”

Social media is one way she promotes her newest merchandise and special pricing, or deals for regular and new customers.
“I wanted to open a boutique that catered to women of all ages, sizes and genres of fashion,” she says. “I wanted to offer an alternative to leaving town, to be able to buy fashionable clothes.”
Her store is size-inclusive. She stocks women’s sizes from extra small to 3X, offered at affordable prices.
As part of the business community, Mann also takes part in the special events planned by the Downtown Merchants Association, such as the holiday kickoff in November and special hours during the holiday shopping season. This camaraderie makes working and shopping a pleasant experience.
The store is in the heart of the historic business district. With windows facing this main thoroughfare, she can display new selections and add to the vibrancy of a burgeoning downtown shopping district. Her storefront, adorned with a red and

La Porte Municipal Airport (KPPO) serves the surrounding area by providing a terminal, hangars, maintenance and a flying school. It is also the location of the La Porte Aero Club, a social club for people who have a common interest in airplanes and flying. The club promotes education and awards scholarships to students interested in furthering their education in the field of aviation. Among its nearly 80 members are pilots, flight instructors, ultralight enthusiasts, plus people who just love airplanes.
The club, which started in 1976, met for many years in one of KPPO’s hangers. In the early 1990s, members built the current clubhouse. In August of 2021, the successful raffle of a Cessna 172M not only funded scholarships, but also made it possible to renovate the clubhouse facility.
“For many years we raised money by having a pancake breakfast,” says Alan Good, who served as president from 2016 to 2019. “We had it down to a science. We would take in about $2,000 to $3,000, and 75% of that would go towards the scholarships we gave. Then COVID came and we had to raise money another way.

Art Schoen, one of the hardest-working members, said, ‘Why don’t we raffle an airplane?’ We were able to secure an airplane that had come into the airport for maintenance.”
The owner of the airplane wanted to sell it and club members asked him how much money he wanted for it. They told him the raffle plans - the owner would receive his asking price and the club could keep any funds raised above that amount. The plane received needed maintenance and refurbishment, and once the repairs were finished, it was offered up in tip-top shape. Word got out on Facebook and spread through the aviation community. People from all over the country including Alaska and Hawaii purchased tickets, and the winner was a man from Phoenix, Arizona.
“As a result, this past year we were able to offer $16,000 in scholarships,” Good says. “Two were for students going to college

and others were for vocational training such as maintenance. Our scholarships can be distributed over multiple years with the student receiving money for two years.”
In addition, the club donates money to KPPO and supports activities the airport sponsors. Support is given to the Aviation Camp. Other airport events such as Trick or Treat at the Scairport are posted on the club’s Facebook page.
Although the raffle was wildly successful, a misunderstanding with the Indiana Gaming Commission transpired, and this year something slightly different is planned. A 1966 Cherokee 180 was donated to the Aero Club. Members have been volunteering their time to repair and rebuild the plane, which will be sold to raise funds. Members hope that someone local will step up and purchase it, and members would like to keep it at the airport.

The club hosts speakers at different times throughout the year. Some are aviation related, such as a woman who flew around the world and a man who advises people on procedures for flying in South American countries such as Costa Rica. Other talks may not be related to airplanes, but rather appeal to listeners’ sense of adventure, such as a bicyclist who drove extensively through Indiana.
Dues are $20 per year. The club publishes a monthly newsletter that can be accessed through the organization’s website.
Birthdays, anniversaries, upcoming activities, educational snippets, and even a joke or two are included in each issue.
Updates on speakers, get-togethers, fundraisers and other events are posted on the group’s Facebook page. There are monthly meetings, group dinners, an annual Christmas party and a social night each Thursday.
“We don’t know what our fundraiser for next year will be,” Good says. “We are looking for another project. There are a lot of nice people in the club who just enjoy getting together every Thursday night and shooting pool in the clubhouse.”
The La Porte Aero Club is located at 2002 South 150 West at the La Porte Municipal Airport. For more info, go to sites.google. com/view/laporteaeroclub, or email laporteaeroclub@gmail.com.

HELPS HUNGRY CHILDREN
Blessings in a Backpack Culver, located at 401 School Street in Culver, has been helping make sure children in the local community don’t go hungry—and the organization’s leaders would love to get additional help.
Marian McCuen, with the Blessings in a Backpack Culver program, says the program’s goal is to make sure kids have access to food and notes that the program has been that way since it started.
“The Culver program was started by
“Dianne began fundraising in 2014, and the first local chapter began in January 2015 to serve students during the school year. Susan Elizondo then later took over for Diane Johnson.”
McCuen, who is a co-coordinator of the program with Brenda Osborn, added that Blessings in a Backpack mobilizes communities, individuals and resources to provide food on the weekends for schoolaged children who otherwise might go hungry.
“In
The Culver community has been very good about making sure children in the area have the nourishment they need to learn and grow.
McCuen says Blessings in a Backpack Culver offers different people diverse ways to help close the weekend nutrition gap for children by sharing their time and talent.

2017, Blessings in a Backpack Culver was one of the first organizations in the country to provide weekend meals to students during the summer months,” says McCuen.
PROGRAM
“An informational letter to the parents in the area is distributed at the beginning of the school year to explain our program and to see who needs assistance,” says McCuen. “The school counselors give us a list of students in need. We then start ordering items to distribute to the student’s lockers on Thursdays after school.”
Blessings in a Backpack Culver then has packing days to get the food ready.
“Once a month, we have a pack day where we prepare the bags for weekly distribution,” says McCuen. “We receive funds from groups, organizations and individuals.”
McCuen says Blessings in a Backpack Culver also has strategies to feed more kids through volunteer teams, chapters and events.

McCuen says she has personally witnessed children in need of more food.
“I worked in the Westville school system for 31 years as a paraprofessional and saw firsthand the effects of poorly nourished children. I knew that helping with Blessings in a Backpack would be a great fit for my husband and I to meet people and get involved in a worthy cause.”
McCuen notes that they are always looking for more people to help or make donations.
“We use Town Gown and Lake to recruit volunteers and have a core group of around 15 people who assist at the monthly packings consistently,” she says.
Donations can be sent to Brenda Osborn, 1111 West Shore Drive, Culver, IN 46511, or to the national Blessings in a Backpack website at blessingsinabackpack. org. Then, select a Culver community school to donate to.
“We are also in partnership with the Academy for an Impact Competition with the Ron Rubin school for the Entrepreneur,” McCuen says. “J. D. Eubler works on that. Tracy Fox has also assisted us with the nutritional aspect of items included.”

Fuller says she was encouraged by her family and friends to start Homemade by Cindy. They inspired her to make more of her cupcakes, pies and cookies for hundreds of other people to enjoy. She is very grateful for their kind and positive words.
“Homemade by Cindy started when I wanted to make homemade treats for my kids to bring to day care for their birthdays,” Fuller says. “My husband, Jordan, told me how tasty they were, and encouraged me to sell at our local farmers market. He is the most supportive husband and he has stayed up many a late Friday night to help me prepare for different farmers markets.”

Fuller has her own favorite treats.

The Reese’s cupcake is a chocolate cake with a peanut butter filling, frosted with chocolate buttercream and topped with chopped Reese’s cups. I have also made cake versions of them. Fuller’s treats have led to a strong and dedicated following in the Bourbon community.
“I also make custom birthday cakes and cupcakes,” Fuller says. “I was once asked to make a birthday cake featuring Halloween and zoo animals. That was a fun one to make. I ended up with some trick-ortreating zoo animals.”
Fuller notes that she is always looking for new customers that will enjoy all of the delicious baked goods from Homemade by Cindy.
