a great opportunity to bring different organizations together for a common cause.
Members of the Marshall County Brew Club believe there is nothing better than a cold brew with friends. They say it’s also a positive way to relax and get to know people with similar interests.
“We decided to become a nonprofit so that we could partner with various organizations in the region,” Lushbaugh says. “It has also helped us to build relationships with several local organizations.”
Just ask Michael Lushbaugh, the new president of the Marshall County Brew Club, Indiana’s only brew club that is also a nonprofit organization. He says it’s been
Those relationships have paid off with positive word of mouth in the community.
Lushbaugh says they plan on using their nonprofit status to sponsor events in the area. “We are also considering a future event with the Marshall County Humane Society,” Lushbaugh says. Lushbaugh notes that the club is for Marshall County’s home brewers, fermenters and distillers, but their reach extends beyond just brew enthusiasts.

Lushbaugh says. “Recently we sampled an off-flavor kit to help sharpen our palates to the unwanted mistakes that sometimes occur, how they occur and how to avoid them. In January we gathered to brew lagers in our annual lager day.” Club members have thoroughly enjoyed their many creations. “Every member has produced several, if not more, excellent brews,” Lushbaugh says. “Our sour brews are top-shelf. One member brews a blueberry sour known as Big Grimace. Others brew krieks and goses. We cobbled together on a barrel stout, and a barrel-aged Scotch ale.” Extract and Grain Association, another home brew club.” The Marshall County Brew Club includes home brewers who encourage each other to experiment with their craft and share their

The club also has plans to work together to brew a barrel-aged red ale.

Angela Miller, curriculum director for Caston School Corporation, says there are exciting days ahead for the schools.
The four strategic priorities are curriculum, instruction, and assessment; culture; communication and marketing; and campus.
“During the spring semester of 2021, the Caston School Corporation held meetings to update the vision, mission, beliefs and strategic plan for the school corporation,” Miller says. “During this time a community steering committee made up of staff, students, parents, administrators, school board members and community stakeholders met to look at surveys, and

Under the culture priority, the strategic plan is to nurture a respectful and positive school community to recruit and retain students and staff. The plan also involves strengthening positive student interventions and support during the 2021-2022 year and monitoring these initiatives yearly, and also creating a monitored teacher recruitment and retention plan during the 2021-2022 academic year. strategic plan is to prioritize financial and facility resources to support student achievement by conducting a yearly fiscal analysis to ensure responsibility and stability, develop a facilities improvement plan to be reviewed and shared annually, and implement equitable technology resources in all classrooms by August of 2022. Under the communication and marketing priority, the plan is to increase effective communication and marketing. Corporation leaders plan to do this by developing an external and internal communications plan during the 20212022 academic year with yearly progress monitoring, and also coordinating and aligning the district’s marketing plan during the 2021-2022 academic year with similar monitoring.
“As a small rural school, there is always a feeling that students who attend small schools miss out on activities and opportunities that bigger schools offer,” The school district’s tagline is “Big enough to do great things, but small enough to care.” Miller says. “At Caston schools, we pride ourselves in finding a way to meet student
needs in a small setting. Our athletics and Future Farmers programs are competitive at the state levels. Our robotics program has won state and national awards. We strive to offer as many programs as our building and staff can accommodate, and we then depend ww w.c oll ins ho me s.c om

It’s a win-win. Since the school is not in a large town, the school is the center of the small farming community. There is a lot of pride in the school and the graduates it produces.”

ranked 20th in production during the war. Bell lived in Mentone from April 5, 1894, his birthday, until 1907 when his parents moved to California. He was 13 years old and the youngest of 10 children. His father worked in a sawmill and his mother was a schoolteacher who had moved to Mentone from Ohio. While the museum preserves these relics of American entrepreneurial spirit and hard work, it also provides a way for students to learn more about their history, museum board members say. For older people and military veterans, it is also a place to reminisce and reflect. Whetstone tells the story of a veteran who, after seeing the Huey on display, which figured in the Korean and Vietnam wars, remarked that he wouldn’t be alive if it hadn’t been for the Huey. The museum hosts the annual Rotors Over Mentone event on the second weekend in September. This year marks the 13th year for the event, which draws pilots and helicopters from long distances to converge in Mentone. It is set for September 10. A program with a speaker is planned for 11 a.m., and helicopter rides will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In a room off of the main exhibit hall is the Mentone Historical Museum. It was designated in 2018 as a repository of items reflecting Mentone’s history. Several donated items from residents fill this space including genealogical research materials,

From selling hamburgers outside their apartment’s back door in Indianapolis while in college, to becoming the owners of a restaurant in Rochester, the culinary journey of cousins Alex and Enrique Martinez is a boon for local foodies. Primos Bar and Grill opened one year ago in a restaurant space previously occupied
by the parents of one of the cousin’s best friends. The name of the business was a natural for them - “primo” means “cousin” in Spanish.
Enrique gained experience in food service while working his way through college in Indianapolis. He started as a busser and became a sous-chef.
Alex studied business and management. His “We had the idea of opening a restaurant in parents ran a restaurant and his father is self- 2016,” Alex says. “We wanted to do our own thing.” employed. He says he knew he wanted to work for himself because of that.

What these 26-year-old cousins have created is a fresh take on the flavors of their heritage, mixed with traditional menu items like wedge salads, burgers and margaritas. The difference is the flavor profiles that elevate classic foods with a modern twist. During the first few months of operation, the menu was simple. Alex and Enrique say
they did not know what to expect. Neither had operated their own restaurant before and this was new ground, especially in Rochester - a new hometown for both.

Enrique says their formula for a successful restaurant includes a couple of key elements - make good food, don’t cut corners and keep everything fresh. Meat for their tacos
There is a variety of smoked meats - a favorite preparation technique for Enrique and an old-fashioned cocktail called Smoke on the Water.

He is also a fan of Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” hosted by Guy Fieri. Enrique would not mind if Fieri came through the door to feature Primos on his show, he says. The vibe of modernizing classic dishes is exactly the kind of vibe Alex and Enrique envision for Primos. Earlier this year the menu doubled in size.

offers 10 different smash burger options. The smash burger is simply ground meat that is rolled into a ball and then smashed on a flat-iron grill. It creates a crispy texture on the meat patty, and reminds diners of the old-fashioned hamburgers served at hamburger joints of the 1950s. Primos is designed to be a family-friendly place that has a fun atmosphere. It’s laid back but still has high energy. “We are just guys who want to serve good food,” Alex says. Owning their own restaurant has checked boxes for the Martinez cousins. They enjoy what they do, but are also aware that it takes time to manage a business. It is their passion for this work that comes through in the drinks and dishes they place before their restaurant guests, and the service their staff provides. GUNNING FOR EXCELLENCE
YUTZY’S AMMO AND OPTICS OWNER TALKS PRODUCTS AND SERVICES Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided
A customer at Yutzy’s Ammo and Optics in Wakarusa was seeking the advice of Owner Karl Yutzy. The man was putting up Martin
houses and wanted something that would keep pests away. He was unsure of what he needed and what type of gun would be best. Requests like this are typical at Yutzy’s gun

shop. He says he started the store because he wanted to make sure his neighbors and community had a place nearby to order and obtain guns, ammunition and other supplies. He purchased inventory from
another business and set up shop in an unused space behind his house between Nappanee and Wakarusa. The shop is open in the evenings, after Yutzy gets home from his daytime job. His family is nearby, and he can help his neighbors who come by. “I had guns as a kid and started getting more when I got married,” Yutzy says. “I always liked to shoot and calibrate guns. It was a pastime. I learned how to do more after I got the shop.” Yutzy stocks the store with a selection of gun-related supplies such as clay pigeons for skeet shooting, cleaning supplies, batteries, flashlights and knives. He carries ammunition, rifles, pellet guns and scopes. He has guns and scopes available in the shop. Yutzy can also special-order guns, handguns and scopes based on a customer’s preference.

The answer Yutzy gave to the customer looking to keep pests away from his Martin houses was to procure a pellet gun and scope. Pellet guns are appropriate for hunting small game and birds, and for target shooting. “They are extra accurate,” Yutzy explains, “They are less expensive and quiet.” Pellet guns can also be considered air guns. Instead of using gun powder to fire a bullet, compressed air fires small metal pellets. Although this is similar to a BB gun, the difference is mostly found in the shape of the projectiles. In the case of a pellet gun, the projectiles are metal and resemble a shuttlecock. When a customer comes in looking for a gun, there is information Yutzy wants to know before he makes a suggestion. He says he wants to make sure they know about gun safety and the gun they are getting. He asks what they want to use the gun for and

A DIFFERENT KIND OF GRIND Writer / Abby Renz Photos / New Kitchen Store
How do you grind your dried herbs and spices? Perhaps you use spice grinders, especially nice for your salt and pepper, but what about mixing your spices to really bring out the flavor? But have you ever used or considered using a mortar and pestle? When I first used a mortar and pestle for cooking, it was for basic salt grinding, as I love using pink Himalayan sea salt in my cooking. When I started mixing more spices together, I had my now three-yearold nephew to help out. We were cooking homemade tomato basil soup, and I had measured out my intended spices, (salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, dry basil, etc), and helped my nephew add each to the mortar, and then we together ground THE LAKES MAGAZINE / APRIL 2022 / TownePost.com
the spices together with the pestle. He was doing great, and after we stirred it into the soup and added fresh basil, and then he decided to toss the pestle on the ground. Thankfully it did not break, and he did not get hurt, and we had a quick lesson on how not to throw things. I picked it up and had him hold it in his hand, asking him, ‘Is this heavy?’ and he answered, ‘Yes auntie’, and I asked him if this would feel good if it fell on his foot or mine when he tossed it, he answered, ‘no auntie.’ I wanted him to understand why we can’t throw things, especially in the kitchen and then we finished up our dinner. In hindsight, I should have gotten him a bamboo mortar and pestle to mimic my movements, but the granite pestle held up and provided a nice lesson. I now own two mortar and pestles, one of them the white granite and the other a gorgeous acacia wood, and use them every time I cook. I have compared my recipes flavor before and after introducing the mortar and pestles and have found that they not only release more flavor, but make cooking more enjoyable. If you too are looking to enhance your cooking skills, you can find one that will suit your needs and your home right here at New Kitchen store. We hold in stock beautiful and functional mortar and pestles made from a variety of materials including granite, stainless Creating a highly polished finish on your old wheels.

STEEPED IN TRADITION CHAUTAUQUA-WAWASEE BRINGS THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER
Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
the need for local Chautauquas peaked in the 1920s and began to decline.
Mark Knecht with Chautauqua-Wawasee says the well-known community events organization has a rich history.
Through the years the programs offered by Chautauqua organizations evolved to focus on four pillars - arts, education, faith and recreation.
The goals of Chautauqua-Wawasee, a Syracuse-based nonprofit dedicated to bringing the community together through unique and engaging programming, have remained the same through the years. “Chautauqua was a religious and cultural movement begun in the late 1890s that brought culture and entertainment to small and mid-size communities,” Knecht says. “At its peak there were literally thousands of Chautauquas.” With the advent of automobiles and radio,
“Today there are 19 Chautauqua organizations in North America,” Knecht says. “These have survived based on their heritage as a summer church camp. All operate independently as stand-alone organizations, each with similar but different programs, but all focusing on the four Chautauqua pillars.”
“Our organization strives to address the void still evident in Syracuse and the northern Indiana region of Chautauquatype programs - arts, education, faith and recreation,” Knecht says. “Our goal is to fill these voids with programs that make the region a better place to visit, work, live and raise a family.” Chautauqua-Wawasee’s mission is to provide valuable and life-enriching experiences.
“Our program team seeks to identify programs and experiences that are otherwise unavailable locally,” Knecht says. “By providing unique events, we are Chautauqua-Wawasee emerged from able to serve the Syracuse area, and attract Oakwood Park, the site of United Methodist audiences from larger nearby communities summer church camp. such as Fort Wayne, South Bend, Elkhart, Goshen, Plymouth and even Indianapolis THE LAKES MAGAZINE / APRIL 2022 / TownePost.com
for some programs.” Chautauqua-Wawasee also engages the public in arts, education, faith and recreation, by greatly enhancing the experiences offered. “For example, in August of 2019 we organized four individual programs
celebrating the women’s suffrage centennial, because we saw a regional void not filled by larger nearby communities,” Knecht says. “In 2018 we started a three-day series of Native American history programs that is now in its fourth year. These programs have leveraged local historians as well as expert speakers from Notre Dame.”
In 2021 the organization created Patriot’s Day, which takes place around July 4. “It offers a re-enactment by an American icon, and a community-wide Patriotic Pops concert,” Knecht says. “Another annual program is our Old Fashioned Christmas, which provides a comprehensive family experience that both entertains and keeps

according to Knecht.
Chautauqua-Wawasee also has a Bible reading in the chapel, as well as familyoriented activities such as sleigh rides, Santa appearances, caroling, live reindeer and roaming popular characters for pictures.
“For the second year this Memorial Day, we are organizing an event we call ‘Taps Across the Water at Dusk,’” Knecht says. “In conjunction with American Legion Post 223, we recruit as many buglers as possible. We had 23 in 2021. We position them strategically around lakes in Syracuse, Wawasee and Papakeechie. “
Respect for America’s heritage is an important element of their programs,
Through the Mail-Journal newspaper and social media, Chautauqua-Wawasee asks for one minute of silence at 9:08 p.m., which is followed at 9:09 with a playing of “Taps” by all buglers. “This event is attended by people on boats, piers, porches, decks and lake restaurants to honor veterans and all those who have fallen to keep America America,” Knecht says.

“That’s on May 29 this year. On Patriot’s Day, June 26, we are bringing a renowned actor to perform ‘An Encounter with Thomas Jefferson,’ which is followed by the annual Fort Wayne Philharmonic Patriotic pops concert at Oakwood Resort.” Because 99% of their programs are free to attend through grants, many people take
advantage of them. “The grants are from the Bremback Foundation, Harkless Foundation, Kosciusko County Community Foundation, Lilly Foundation, Indiana Humanities, and Parent Family Foundation, and funding from the Kosciusko County Convention, Recreation and Visitors Commission and
donations from many of our individual patrons,” Knecht says. “We would not exist without the support of all of these who provide our funding.” For more information on ChautauquaWawasee, located at 702 East Lake View Road in Syracuse, call 574-377-7543 or visit chautauquawawasee.org.

Saturday, April 16 will mark the third year Bikes For Kids will distribute bikes to children from Marshall and surrounding counties whose families receive county and state assistance, such as EBT, SNAP, TANF, WIC and Hoosier Works cards. David Abair, active member of Hoosier Old Wheels; and Mirna Dault, who has served on boards and written grants for other nonprofits. “We can always use more helpers,” Mark Sage says. “This year is different because we haven’t been able to purchase as many
new bikes as in the past, so we are filling in with refurbished bikes. We need people to pick up bikes and transport them to the barn where they are stored. The barn has a heated basement and bike storage overhead. Volunteers are needed to clean, assemble and repair bikes. On the day of the event, we need bike runners and food-prep help.”

Although the organization came up short on funding this year, Sage feels that enough used bikes can be rebuilt in time. Several places to drop off bikes are listed on the organization’s website. Those wishing to donate a bike and who need someone to pick it up can call 574-221-5688.
“We are looking for bikes that don’t need a lot of work,” Sage says. “Kids deserve a bike that’s like new. We are hoping to have 330 bikes to give away this year and we like to match a helmet with each child. We didn’t have the capital to buy both new bikes and helmets, so we will buy helmets with the money we have.”
The organization’s website has a Store page where donations are accepted. For just $10, a new helmet can be “purchased” to ensure the safety of a happy bike rider. Those providing funds can see photos of bikes priced at $100 for a larger size, down to $25, in an effort to cover kids from age 3 up to high schoolers who do not drive yet.

“Everyone in the community has been supportive and there has been nothing but positives in this effort to get kids off of the couch and off of video games,” Sage says. “Two or three radio stations have gotten the word out. The bike giveaway is really an effort. There’s a lot more than meets the eye. In the future we hope to grow and expand by setting up satellite locations in other communities such as Knox or Rochester. We’d love to reach the level of giving away 1,000 bikes in Marshall County.” The Bikes For Kids Third Annual Bike Giveaway will be held at noon on Saturday, April 16 in Centennial Park, at 1660 North Michigan Street in Plymouth. im Ols, co-owner of Big Green Barn Metal Worx, says it was a metal fish that inspired her to start her metal art business.
The Chickadees Gift Shop gave her a great place to showcase her work, and it led her to start her own business.
“It all started because of a metal fish I saw that I really wanted,” Ols says. “My husband Kevin, who co-owns the business, said we would need a plasma cutter for it. We bought one and I cut pieces by hand for about seven years before we built our plasma table. We have used the table for two years now.”
“We take the time to make your idea for a custom metal piece to be exactly what you want,” Ols says.
Big Green Barn Metal Worx offers oneIt was something she just had to have, so she of-a-kind metal art, and Ols says she has a decided to take a creative route to catch her passion for creating art for projects that are near and dear to her customers’ hearts. fish.
The business grew from that special project. “We officially opened the storefront for Big Green Barn Metal Worx on October 27, 2021, but we sold our art out of the Chickadees Gift Shop for nine years before that,” Ols says.
The business offers large garden metal silhouettes, and also makes special custom orders. “We get requests for custom items all of the time,” Ols says. “We have done memorials for a three-legged dog, customized farm signs and garden trellises. We also get a lot of requests for older vehicle silhouettes made into custom signs.” Ols credits her customers for keeping her

customers who compliment her work. “We have very loyal customers,” Ols says. “Their response to the storefront has been overwhelmingly positive. They have shared our pieces with their friends and family on a weekly basis. We also love seeing new faces.” Ols goes out of her way to make the business stand out. She says her customers can also make a statement with her large garden metal silhouettes. Big Green Barn Metal Worx also offers new, colorful pieces as a nice contrast to the cold, dark winter months. Ols also tries to stand out among competitors. “We try to create unique pieces that other metal artists are not making,” Ols says. “There is something new coming into the shop if you come in here on a weekly basis. I like to make freestanding 3D pieces with a lot of color.” Powder coating is also available. “We offer powder coating for all of our custom pieces,” Ols says. Ols is continually inspired by many items around her. “I tend to look at discarded items and see something new and useful,” she says. “I like to create with old and new pieces together. I did newspaper layout design when it was all cut-and-paste graphics, which has helped me be able to design now.” Ols is also inspired by the people of Lakeville. They remind her of her childhood days. “I grew up in Bristol, Indiana,” she says. “We have been in Lakeville for about 25 years now. It has the same smalltown feel and is very community oriented.” Big Green Barn Metal Worx is located at 12135 U.S. Highway 6 in Plymouth. The Titanic at sail on its fated first and final voyage in April, 1912.
UNSINKABLE MEMORIES
LOCAL CONNECTIONS TO THE TITANIC STILL VISIBLE IN THE LAKES AREA Writer / Jeff Kenney Photography / Culver Academies Archives, Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver, and Public Domain.
Advertisement announcing a presentation by Wennerström about his Titanic experiences at the Culver Theatre in 1924.
This month marks the 110th anniversary, from April 15, 1912, of arguably the most infamous and enduringly gripping disaster in modern history - when the RMS Titanic ship sank to the bottom of the sea. While the lore surrounding the event, right down to the award-winning 1997 movie about it, may be worldwide in scope, there’s a very local connection.
1/4 PAGE HORIZONTAL 58 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / APRIL 2022 / TownePost.com
August “Leo” Wennerström, superintendent of buildings and grounds at Culver Military Academy, annually recounted in harrowing detail his escape from that ship, and eventually his journey to become one of the only survivors of its sinking to relocate to Indiana. While on the Titanic, August Edvard Andersson, a young Swedish journalist and publisher traveling under the pseudonym “Wennerström,” had met several other Swedes who were emigrating or returning to the U.S. including Alma Pålsson and her four children, who were on their way to Chicago to rejoin their husband and father, Nils.
Titanic survivor August Wennerström while groundskeeper at Culver Military Academy.
As the ship began to sink, some lifeboats were deliberately launched partly empty so that they could row back for survivors, which eventually inadvertently saved Wennerström. Wennerström later wrote of the sinking,

“Cry, cry everywhere. Prayer and more prayer. Not very often has God been remembered and called on as he was in that night.” As the ship sank, Wennerström first tried to rescue two of the Pålsson children, but lost hold of them. Alma Pålsson’s body was recovered and she was buried in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on May 8, 1912, though her children were never found. Wennerström would later recall floating for some time and awakening on top of three bodies floating in the water. He made it to a collapsible boat, later noting that all feeling had left his legs in the frigid cold, and that occasionally the bodies of those who had died were cast off the boat to lighten its weight. After the Carpathia ship delivered survivors to New York City, Wennerström eventually made his way to Chicago where he met and eventually married Naomi Johnson.

Wennerström’s journey to Culver was an odd one, and his motives for being at the train station in Culver when he was were never completely clear, but his timing was fortuitous. Culver Military Academy was expecting the arrival of a new gardener named Leo, to work for the school’s grounds department, and Wennerström was assumed to be that gardener, who never showed up. So, by 1913, August Wennerström found himself with gainful employment and a nickname he would keep for the rest of his life - Leo. August and Naomi had one daughter and six sons, including one whose first name reflected the couple’s appreciation and love of their adopted community - Culver Wennerström (the Swedish punctuation was also eventually dropped from their last name, at least in print locally). All of the Wennerströms served their country in World War II. August Wennerström held the position of
head groundskeeper at the academy until his retirement in 1941. He also frequently spoke at the academy and in venues around the region and the country, particularly Swedish Methodist churches, about his experience on the Titanic. Another Culver-area link to the Titanic developed in relation to Wennerström. In 1946, Nils Pålsson (whose name by then had been Anglicized to Paulson) finally remarried and retired to Culver after connecting with Wennerström, who related his sad tale of attempting to save Paulson’s wife and children. Paulson and his wife Christina lived on William Street in the town of Culver, but he owned a garden plot on Thorn Road, next to the home of Allen and Rosemary Weaver, where he tearfully planted four maple seedlings taken from trees on William Street, apparently in memory of the four children he had lost decades before.
Nils Paulson, whose wife and children Wennerström sought to save on the Titanic, and who planted trees in Culver to honor their memory.

August Wennerström died in 1950 and Nils Paulson in 1964, and both are buried in the Culver Masonic Cemetery. Their graves, and the trees (which are still visible at roadside) remain visible testimony to one of the great tragedies of recent centuries. (Author’s note: Allen and Rosemary Weaver’s son Dan Weaver tells the story of August Wennerström, Nils Paulson, and watching the planting of the “Titanic trees,” in the 2018 PBS documentary, “Our Town: Culver,” viewable online at facebook.com/wnitpublictv/ videos/240701283255989). Author Jeff Kenney is museum and archives manager at Culver Academies and serves on the board of the Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver.

in some way, and that number increases 10 times when looking at the network.
When a person needs to talk through the challenges and life struggles they face, there is a place that feeds that need. Recovery Café is that place.
“We are an all-pathway provider, which means we are going to support you no matter what your personal decision may be,” Coleman says. “Everyone is welcome from every background and walk of life.”
The nonprofit organization was founded in 2020 and has been open for a little more than a year. There are two paid staff members including Pat Brown, executive director, and Katie Coleman, cafe manager. Brown and Coleman also have the assistance of seven board members and six volunteers who assist 20 members. There are also more than nine community partnerships formed with agencies and businesses in the Rochester area. Brown and Coleman estimate that more than 100 local people are involved with their program
care is not supported in a manner equal to physical health, according to Coleman and Brown.
The Recovery Café is not a clinic. It offers peer support in guiding people towards the realization of what an individual needs to meet their life goals.
“If you had a hip replacement after years of abusing your hip, you would see a medical doctor, then a specialist or surgeon, and they would work with therapists to create a plan of care,” Brown explains. “Now if you have bipolar disorder or an addiction, none of that exists. People don’t fail rehab or treatment. The rehab and treatment systems fail people. That’s why we are here.”
There are many reasons that this type of service is needed, according to Coleman and Brown. Mental health and substanceuse issues are at high levels in many areas, and rates of arrests, consumption, incarceration, overdoses and deaths are high. Suicide prevention and mental health
Help includes assisting the person in finding treatment providers, and assessing different programs and opportunities. Homelessness, depression, anxiety, loneliness, incarceration, abuse and addiction are just some of the situations that bring people into Recovery Café.

“Our focus is the human being and their long-term health and happiness,” Brown says. At Recovery Café there are guiding principles that create the welcoming atmosphere that is critical to encouraging conversation and sharing. Anyone who comes in needs to feel safe and appreciated,
“Humans gather around food,” Coleman says. “We are social around food. We congregate around food. Along with music, “So many people experience stigma wherever they go,” Coleman says. “We work eating is one of the most pro-social activities anywhere. The meal begins at 7 p.m. and starts with five minutes of shared silence. Brown says this requirement is sometimes awkward for some, but it results in relaxation and calm. The last hour is a time for learning skills or being inspired by others.

On Saturdays, Recovery Café opens at 9 a.m. and children are welcome. The first half-hour is a social time. The cereal bar opens at 9:30 a.m. with a variety of offerings. At 11 a.m., adults gather for social time, and the final hour is devoted to sharing and discussing challenges in a support-group setting, without children.

“The people who come to the cafe have an awareness of their problems, and sometimes a fear of their problems,” Brown says. “We have had members moved to tears simply because they were treated with kindness, included in conversations and encouraged by others.”

BUILDING EXPERTISE CULVER BUILDING TRADES INSTRUCTOR TALKS PROGRAM’S IMPORTANCE Writer / Angela Cornell Photography Provided
Kyle Elliott, building trades program instructor for Culver Community Schools Corporation, has seen firsthand the caliber of junior and senior high school students and has been impressed by their work ethic.
“There are young kids out there who want to do things right and want to work hard to do it,” Elliott says. “It’s amazing what you can do when kids are working hard and they’re working together.” In the last 43 years that the high school has offered this program, hundreds of young people have learned the basics of
construction, and by extension, teamwork, by building a house in the Culver area. Throughout the North Central Co-op, which encompasses 10 schools in the area, there are three building trades programs including John Glenn and Plymouth. What sets Culver apart, among other factors, is that it is one of the oldest trades programs

Before someone can get on the waiting list, they must first own land. When it’s the landowner’s year, Elliott will help develop and finalize a building design. Each is unique, and that keeps it exciting for Elliott and all the students, especially those who are returning to the program for their senior year. “Last year was a single-story ranch style, and this year is a two story,” Elliott says. “We get a mix of homes. It varies year to year.” Although the home is made by students who are putting their all into doing a quality job, and who are supervised by people who have done this many times and have a reputation for doing it right, the house comes at a discount to the homeowner. In fact, the school charges the homeowner only 20% above material cost for all the labor that the students put in. From that, $1,000 is given as a scholarship to a graduating senior. The rest goes directly back into the program for equipment, supplies and other costs. From the first week of school, teaching the students how to do the job excellently, safely and according to code is of the utmost importance. “The kids are in-house here at the school,” Elliott says. “We cover job-site safety and things of that nature. Then after that, we’re basically at the house about every day. We try to do everything we can. We’re actually starting the frame the first week that we’re out at the house.” Every year the students do most if not all of the exterior work - the framework, windows, doors and roofing. In the interior, the students also do all of the electrical work and drywall installation, as well as trimming and cabinetry. The rest of the work depends on the size of the home. Some aspects of the building are, by necessity, left to those who are certified, like the foundation, masonry, plumbing, heating and drywall finishing. Nonetheless, Elliott will often assign a student to help the professional if there’s interest in that field.
