fall season Becker has been busy preparing for the festival. Prior to the October start date, Becker helps to grow the 46 different varieties of pumpkins, gourds and squash that make up the displays of Pumpkin Fantasyland.

Pumpkin Fantasyland is rooted in family fun time. Paired with creativity and childlike imagination, the fall festival encourages children and their families to interact with their surroundings and, in the spirit of the season, play. Jason Becker is the third generation owner of Fashion Farms and pivotal to all that Pumpkin Fantasyland has to offer. The original owner was Becker’s grandfather Charles R. William, more commonly known as Charlie Pumpkin. Hayrides, mazes and delicious pumpkin flavored donuts begin to paint a picture of what can be found at the wonderful Pumpkin Fantasyland, but nothing is more

Pumpkin Fantasyland is a part of the fall festivities that Fashion Farms, a 200-acre plot of land in Ligonier Indiana, hosts for the entire month of October. Within those acres, Fashion Farms houses businesses, residential spaces, restaurants and an annual fall festival called Pumpkin Fantasyland. Seated on 26 acres within Fashion Farm, Pumpkin Fantasyland is centered around family time, creativity and the imagination of the kids who attend.

the displays, and make sure the guests all have a good time,” says Becker who is also in charge of developing the theme, ideas, and props that make up the infamous displays that define what the festival is all about.

There is a special theme to Pumpkin Fantasyland each year which is reflected in the festival’s displays. Displays range from animals and famous faces to storybook and movie characters. Guests can walk through the displays and are encouraged to interact with them. The theme for the 2022 season is celebrating Pumpkin Fantasyland’s 50th anniversary and Charlie Pumpkin’s legacy. The two go hand and hand as Becker’s grandfather started Pumpkin Fantasyland in 1972. Williams originally purchased the land as a grain and cattle farm where he raised cattle and had a roadside market. He originally sold beef and eggs but started a truck crop soon after he began to grow garden greens and fall crops. Peas, pumpkins, green beans, gourds and more were up for sale. Made of pumpkin heads, buckets for bodies and dressed with clothes, “people got a real big kick out of that,” says Becker, who witnessed the scale and creativity of what his grandfather started expand exponentially. could walk through. What originally started as a means to sell produce creatively grew and continued to grow “to a point where the Ohio Roadside Marketing Conference recognized grandpa as one of the founders of agritourism in the country,” says Becker, whose grandfather went on to speak around the country letting people know about what he was doing. Not just creative displays but things like hayrides and mazes were pioneered by Pumpkin who did so because he embraced and uplifted his community.

Pumpkin Fantasyland also makes its own ice cream and has a delicious pumpkin flavor. They also make their own pumpkin bread and “our pumpkin donuts are pretty famous,” says Becker, who last year had 23 states sign the guest registry.

The sight of winged creatures in flight, soaring in magnificent movement, is something that has entranced Aaron Miller ever since he was a young boy. Through the years the allure of nature has evolved from a mere respect and fondness to a true calling. Now Miller has successfully found a way to parlay what began as a hobby into a fascinating Millercareer.

Career in Flight

In time Miller followed suit, and despite not having a particularly strong scholastic background in art, his natural talents were quickly realized. He notes that it has been

is a skillful artisan and the sole proprietor of Final Finish Taxidermy, located in rural Noble County. His pastimes are the embodiment of what one would consider for an outdoorsman, including hunting, fishing and trapping. The inspiration for this most unique vocation actually came to Miller from within his own family, and he specifically credits his uncle for stoking those sparks. He recalls that his uncle was an avid hunter and was actively seeking someone with expertise and proficiency in the field of taxidermy so he could create his own trophy animals.

five years since he started working with his own animals, and three years since it became a full-fledged business enterprise. The confines resulting from the pandemic marked a turning point for Miller, who had previously worked in the recreational vehicle industry. Suddenly Miller, like so many other folks, was directly affected by the limitations of quarantining. He found himself with time on his hands, which he subsequently used to his advantage for perfecting his skills.

“I was really able to expand my skills during COVID,” Miller says. “I found that I was able to do this on a full-time basis.” It was not long until people began to take notice. He is drawn to the challenge of complicated projects, and says that since making Final Finish Taxidermy his primary career endeavor, the field is “where my knowledge and my work has really Presently, improved.”Miller’s range of sculptural works includes mammals, along with a variety of waterfowl and other types of birds. asked if there are any animals that he is not willing to take on, he says with a laugh, “No fish.” Miller is also fully licensed by the Department of Natural Resources as a practicing taxidermist - credentials that are granted and closely monitored at both the federal and state levels.

When a customer visits Final Finish Taxidermy with an animal and an idea, Miller generally gives them a lead time of one year to complete the project. Among the reasons for the lengthy turnaround, he explains, is that he strives to create the most authentic, three-dimensional perspective of

the animal, devoting painstaking attention to detail. To achieve this, Miller uses what he calls “live reference images.” He uses true-to-life imagery to replicate even the most subtle variations in colors, textures and other features.

Final Finish Taxidermy is located at 8430 North 700 West, near Ligonier. Miller can be reached via phone at 260-215-3542, or via email at finalfinishtax@gmail.com. Miller maintains an active social media presence on Facebook and Instagram. His full list of awards, along with a variety of photographs, can be found at finalfinishtaxidermy.com.

For example, when positioning birds, many of Miller’s most renowned creations capture a specific moment or activity within their habitats. Some of the most striking examples illustrate birds shown in full wingspan, mothers nesting on eggs, or birds perched atop sturdy branches. One award-winning creation in particular, “A Mother’s Love,” depicts a mother bird nesting on eggs that Miller crafted using wooden materials and epoxy. Generally, recreating the heads of animals is one of the more intricate tasks, and Miller uses hand-formed molds to ensure the most realistic images. His dexterity for details is astonishing, and he mentions that while working with birds, he attaches each individual feather by hand.

Within a relatively short span of time since Final Finish Taxidermy was launched, Miller has become an award-winning member of the Association of Indiana Taxidermists, where he now holds a seat on the board of directors. Miller also belongs to the Ohio Taxidermist Association and the Michigan Taxidermist Association.

Miller has participated in several competitions in this three-state region, and the walls of his gallery serve as a testimony to his growth and his gifts as an artist. Miller’s enterprise is truly taking flight, not unlike the beautiful birds and vignettes he creates.

Edith Rose Company Finds Local and Regional Success

Jason and Summer Zeider, Troy Eytcheson, and Jamie Long-Rogers

have set up a shop in downtown Rochester on Main Street. The black, white and red color scheme is an updated palette to display their merchandise. Behind the scenes in an adjacent space, the ingredients to make their edibles, topicals, tinctures and even petcentered products are mixed using clean and sanitary equipment.

rom high school conversations about their collective futures to opening a growing business in their community, the owners of Edith Rose Company make up a team that relies on each other’s strengths and talents. Edith Rose opened in April of 2020 and has already expanded operations, with plans to increase production of quality product lines made from the oil of locally grown hemp.

The name Edith Rose honors Eytcheson’s grandmother, who was a cancer survivor and found relief using CBD products to ease the discomfort from treatments for her disease. Eytcheson believes that the relief she found allowed her to live longer than her doctors’

“Our gummies have no earthy taste,” Jason says. “They don’t taste like plants. We have different colors and flavors. It’s important that all our products taste good and smell good. Quality is the key.”

His grandmother, he says, sought a more holistic approach in her treatments.

The main ingredients for these products are grown on Eytcheson’s grandmother’s farm. With the help of Purdue Extension’s resources for hemp growers, Edith Rose Company’s three-acres of crops continue to thrive. Insecticides and herbicides are not used on the crops. Edith Rose Company’s gummies are made from oil extracted from the hemp flower, which they say is more effective than oil extracted from hemp seeds. There is a difference in the quality and potency of products that use the flower, as opposed to the seed.

WHAT A STEEL ARTISTIC STEEL IS ON THE CUTTING EDGE

One of the lessons Lyndon Miller has learned as the owner of Millers Artistic Steel is patience. He fashions metal signs out of 4’x8’ steel panels using a sophisticated machine to cut out the design. Patience, he says, is the key to completing the job to the customer’s and his own satisfaction.

“I didn’t have any experience or training, but I had the time and the room to do this,” he says.

It has been one of the lessons he’s learned from starting up his own business in November of 2020. He makes metal signs, nameplates, fire pits, flower-pot holders,

Miller was planning to join his father and brother in the business, but time commitments and farming

obligations made it difficult for his father and brother to take on the added responsibility. Miller decided to go it alone. It has been a learning process, and he upgraded his original plasma cutter to a larger model in April of 2021.

“If you are not patient, there is a lot that can go wrong in a short period of time,” Miller says.

Customers often submit their own designs and images, or Miller can craft a design for them. Sometimes he uses the customer’s design as a base and adds more details to that design. The customer then sees the proof and approves it before it is cut out on the plasma cutter.

design is transmitted to the cutter, and the machine follows the lines and pattern to create the sign. An arc is created during operation that is transmitted into a beam, which is the cutting mechanism. The beam follows the computer cutting lines to reproduce the design in steel.

Once the design is in place, plasma cutting is not a long process. Miller says many of the signs he makes are completed in five to 10 minutes. It is the design process that takes longer.

Miller and his wife Christina have three daughters ranging in age from 1 to 5. His shop is near the family home outside of Shipshewana. He grew up about six miles for his family, and gives Miller satisfaction.

Yet even with all of the changes in the years that followed, one central theme reigns as the essence of the community. The people of Goshen have always demonstrated charitable acts of compassion and care toward one another. This is the spirit through which Greencroft Goshen was inspired, not so very long ago.

Goshen was a rather different scene in 1962. Sixty years ago, President John F. Kennedy was still leading the nation, and a gallon of milk cost a little over $1.

“We have a long history of putting people first in Goshen,” says Sheena Whitaker, director of marketing. “Our culture of kindness, family and faith runs deep.” Today, Greencroft represents several networks of retirement communities located in various places throughout northern Indiana. Whitaker says that having a nonprofit status is an important distinction.

“It means we’re driven by people, not profit,” Whitaker says. “Every penny we make goes into creating a vibrant community and into the care of our people. It’s about a community that cares for each other - a continuingcare living community that provides a safe, secure environment for those 55plus, with the options of independent living, assisted living and long-term nursing

He may be 3, but he can and does help me in the kitchen. Washing fruits and veggies is a simple task, and perfect for little hands. My nephew helps me scrub potatoes, wash berries, and if some strawberries get eaten, no one has to know about it. I ask him to tell me what each food is, its color, and then we talk about them. For example, “That is a strawberry. It’s sweet, see? We’re going to cut it up and add it to our salad.” It makes for learning moments.

Story & Photography Provided by New Kitchen Store

What if we, as parents, grandparents and adults started to include our kiddos in the process? Now, I’m not telling you to have your 3-yearold make you a five-course meal. That’s insane. But the simple things, the seemingly mundane tasks, they can do. Including your kids in a fun and educational process to help teach them how to prep, cook and clean up for meals, especially dinner, will be beneficial not just for your family, but also for their future. Kids are smart. They pick up behaviors and habits, and truly

model what we do. They are curious why we do things and want to help. So, it’s high time that we let them.

I am an aunt to a 3-year-old boy. He loves dinosaurs, tractors and Spiderman. When he comes over to auntie Abby’s house, he helps me in the kitchen. In a previous article I talked about our “bubble parties” (aka doing dishes), but it doesn’t stop there.

tugging on your pant leg, wanting attention? Then, after you’ve finished the meal, they play with it, ignore their food, or take three bites and declare, “I’m done.” It’s exhausting - an eternal struggle that makes mealtime a chore and even a burden. But what if it wasn’t?

I am next to him the entire time we cook in the kitchen. He is kneeling or standing on a stool next to me, at my hip, the entire time. I keep sharp items away from him at all times and explain why we use butterknives to cut strawberries, or I have him wash while I cut. I explain that the knives are sharp, the stove is hot, etcetera. The biggest thing is that I explain why I’m doing something. He loves to grind up spices for me in my mortar and pestle, and we smell the spices. I tell him what they are and we grind them together.

KIDS IN THE KITCHEN

Kids are curious by nature. Everything is brand new and exciting to them, and confusing. Kids observe their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles every day. They pick up habits both good and bad, and some of these habits they don’t truly grasp. They’ll say, “Why do I have to eat my dinner when I just want to play?” or, “Why is mom adding these weird green leaves to the soup?” or, “But I saw dad use the knife, so why can’t

What about eating dinner? Kids take genuine pride in what they make. They love to help and will be more eager to eat, especially when they helped to make the

This may seem like a burden or even an annoyance, but trust me, involving kids in the kitchen will give them a sense of responsibility, disperse the chore and make lasting memories. This way we are instilling practical life skills to our children, and honing in on creative abilities that they will use for the rest of their lives.

Saving another long-standing downtown Bourbon building is as palatable as the coffee brewed and served at The Fuller Cup, Jeff and Jayne Fuller’s coffee shop on Main Street in Bourbon. The Fullers bought the former Bourbon News Mirror building with the idea of renovating it. At that time,

they had no plans for the building other than to make it suitable for a business - any Therebusiness.was interest from someone who wanted to rent the building to open a coffee shop there. Contractors were hired for the wiring, plumbing, HVAC and other important tasks. With its history, the Fullers were tasked with restoring an old-time feel for the structure. The reclaimed wood walls, brickwork, wood floors and other design details give the interior an 1800s look.

“Everything on the inside is new except the frame,” Jeff says. “We wanted to save it for the community.”

DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE HOWIE’S SIX MILE RESTAURANT AND HOWIE’S ICE CREAM SATISFY LOCALS AND OUT-OF-TOWNERS ALIKE

Writer / Amy PhotographerLant-Wenger/KariLipscomb

When Howard Miller was a youngster, his mother had a job working at a charming yet simple roadside cafe, located along the highway that traverses the town of LaGrange. The eatery was known as Marner’s Six Mile Restaurant.

TownePost.com / OCTOBER 2022 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / 59

Howie’s Six Mile Restaurant has seen some very active seasons, with locals as well as visitors from afar coming to partake of a hometown-inspired and country-infused meal. Breakfast is served all day, and there are lunch and dinner entrées available as well. Traditional favorites such as

In a region that is fully immersed in tourism,

Years later, she can still be found lending her culinary skills to the establishment, along with several additional members of the family. It has been one year since Marner’s became Howie’s Six Mile Restaurant. Nestled by vast expanses of farmland with a ribbon of roadway just beyond the entrance, it may be peaceful and tranquil on the outside, but the kitchen and dining spaces are positively buzzing.

“It was always a dream of hers to own and operate a restaurant,” Miller says. When the sale officially transpired in October of 2021, along came a name change, incorporating Miller’s casual nickname.

The shop is structured for both walk-up and drive-through service, with shaded outdoor seating. There are also a few savory choices at Howie’s Ice Cream including corn dogs,

hamburgers, chicken and fish are paired with hearty sides, soups and salads. For the diner who wants to sample uniquely Hoosier specialties, Howie’s can provide the experience with dishes such as haystacks and fried mush. Miller notes that some time in the very near future, he plans to add steak and ribs to the menu.

So what’s for dessert? Well, patrons can opt for menu treats like pies and cookies, or they can simply wander outside and visit the adjacent family establishment known as Howie’s Ice Cream. There are several flavors of both soft serve and hard ice cream, with an impressive array of toppings, cones and more. Kemps is the featured ice cream supplier, and their products sport whimsical names like Coconut Castaway, all designed to spark both curiosity and tastes.

Combining the two family enterprises into one location has led to success for both, as folks seek out dining adventures with a nostalgic flair. The restaurant in particular harbors generations of memories spanning several decades. While Miller isn’t sure exactly when the original Marner’s Six Mile was founded, framed aerial photos along the walls just inside the main entrance show that the building was operating as a restaurant as far back as the early 1960s. Prior to that time, Miller says, the site was formerly a service station.

HOUSE HELPING

Roz Morgan

Morgan is affable and animated as she speaks. She is very excited about one of the organization’s latest partnerships, as she is confident the union will greatly enhance the reputation of Our Father’s House. The organization is planning to align forces with Sacred Heart and St. Vincent de Paul in an effort to offer local meal services through an auxiliary venture, Our Father’s Catering.

OUR FATHER’S HOUSE LENDS A HAND TO THOSE IN NEED

Working tirelessly to keep the constant flow of momentum going is Director Roz Morgan. She is a whirlwind personality, chatting away as she spiffs up the store, inspects new donations and tends to various inquiries from members of her staff.

Our Father’s House is an outreach program that provides clothing, bedding and other houseware items to folks and families who are experiencing economic hardships. There is also a food pantry, with an inventory of items that is refreshed daily.

When strolling into the modest front entrance of Our Father’s House, a first-time visitor is likely to be awestruck by the spaciousness. During those initial glances, comparisons to the era of department stores might come to mind - so much variety and so many options, all within one building.

TownePost.com / OCTOBER 2022 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / 65 0485 W 200 S LaGrange, IN 46761 Ph: 260-499-3136 Fax: 260-499-3125

Weaving their way through the racks and displays are staff members comprised totally of volunteers, all of whom move swiftly from one task to the next. Although this might seem like the typical rhythm of a brisk business day, this legendary place has anything but. Our Father’s House isn’t just another storefront on the commerce landscape.

One of the most important characteristics of what drives Our Father’s House to succeed is that anyone and everyone in need is valued and welcomed, regardless of their circumstances. “No one is ever turned away here,” Morgan says. Taking that pledge a step further, she adds that

There are plans to begin food-truck routes, some of which will be mapped out for stops at local businesses and factories during the course of the workday. This particular amenity helps to generate funds for the operation of Our Father’s House.

Reflecting on the past 27 years of giving back to the people of Warsaw, Morgan emphasizes the support from the area churches, and the generosity of those who donate and spend their time.

Josh O’Grady

“This community of faith has nurtured and grown this place all these years,” Morgan says. “I would say that 99.9% of what we do is made possible by faith.”

donations are always designed for various purposes, in one way or another. “If we come across something that we can’t use, we’ll send the items to third-world countries,” she says.

The COVID-19 outbreak and the fluctuating economy have both impacted Our Father’s House tremendously,

No donation is ever too small or too insignificant either. “Very little is ever wasted here,” Morgan says. “Even something like a can of soup can make a big difference.” With the holiday season not so far away, Morgan is hoping to coordinate care packages of ingredients and other items that will allow folks to share a holiday meal among a festive atmosphere. She’s envisioning collecting such items as cooking oil, sugar and flour, enclosed with recipes. She also wants to add special touches, keeping in mind what it takes to make a house smell good at Christmas time.

It’s a somewhat bittersweet scenario to consider. In a perfect world everyone

Morgan says. “We’ve probably seen an uptick in customers by about 25 or 30%,” she says. Many have been thrust into unemployment as the restrictions loosened, as not everyone was given the opportunity to return to the workforce and jobs were restructured.

would have all the comforts of home, and everything they could ever need. However, the team members who keep Our Father’s House going strong are keenly aware that there will likely always be those who live and make do without the essentials. Being able to lend a hand and a heart is something that makes Morgan very sentimental.

The AWL Shelter Buddies literacy program has kids come to the shelter on the third Saturday of each month between noon and 3 p.m., and read books out loud to the shelter pets - a sweet way to encourage companionship and improve reading skills.

public do to help to ensure the success and well-being of the AWL and the animals it works endlessly to serve? As it turns out, a great deal. Volunteers are always welcome in any and every capacity, whether that means spending time with the animals, donations tailored for their care, or participation in the various programs.

John Lantz, who serves as the president for the board, along with Tonya Blanchard, executive director, are joined by a team of board officers and directors to keep the timely issues of the AWL in the forefront of people’s minds, and they have all been able to achieve this by offering a number of activities and special events for patrons and supporters of all ages.

New this year is an endeavor that the AWL has christened The Cat House. Making use of an existing building that was already situated on the shelter property when the AWL relocated there, the AWL is using the structure specifically to house the extensive number of shelter cats. The previous housing arrangement, in which kennels were placed close to where the cats were living, was causing stress for the cats, who became unnerved and jittery with the barking of restless dogs. The new feline suites will have ample light streaming through banks of windows, separate cubicles for medical care and an interaction space for families to spend time with the cats.

The Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County is located at 1048 South 325 East in Pierceton. To learn more about upcoming programs, adoption events and other details, visit awlwarsaw.com or call 574-267-3008.
