Compost: The ability to return to nature that which was borrowed from nature. Some refer to the soil as “Mother Earth.” Fertile soil is the source of what feeds us, clothes us, and shelters us. In so doing, we are borrowing that which makes the soil full of life; in the grains which takes its nourishment; in the forage which feeds our livestock; in the timber which provides our shelter.

Composting manures improves the fluidity of the manures by taking on the role of soil bacteria in breaking down the manure components (preconditioning) into molecular structures necessary for soil chelation and plant root absorption.

What we borrow we must replace.

If we continue to “take” and never return in equal share; if we borrow and never repay, we steal from the earth, from that which makes the soil fertile and able to nourish all things that grow from it.

If in greed we coerce the earth to give more through the overuse of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides without replenishing the organic structure, the soil ceases to provide.

The application of Boost™ preconditioned manures greatly increases the volume of beneficial soil bacteria

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

SYRACUSE-WAWASEE HISTORICAL MUSEUM TURNS 35

History is about much more than facts and figures chronicled in textbooks. At any moment, everyone is standing where events took place and lives were intertwined. Over time, special facilities have been designed to showcase artifacts, inventions and ephemera of past years for everyone to marvel at and appreciate.

One such place is the Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the organization, which is wholly dedicated to introducing guests to the founding of local communities and the surrounding Kosciusko County region.

The museum was first a small gathering of exhibits erected to coincide with the Syracuse Sesquicentennial event in 1987. “Originally the museum was only going to be short-term displays around during the celebrations,” recalls Director Jamie Clemons. “After receiving donations from the public, organizers quickly realized that the large amount of donated items could be put together to create a museum for the town.”

The collections were moved from a small venue at Pickwick Plaza to a larger space inside the local library. By 2003 the museum was relocated to the newly constructed Syracuse Community Center, where it’s been

The museum features a number of locally relevant exhibits that are part of the permanent displays. Among the subjects given a lasting spotlight are the former Syracuse High School, military uniforms and weaponry, photos and information on former businesses and civic leaders, and many other distinctive treasures. There is the J.P. Dolan Native American artifact display, a grouping of more than 800 items gathered primarily between 1880 and 1910. Dolan was a teacher and a superintendent known to take his students on field trips near area lakes, all for the purpose of discovering relics.

The museum also has the honor of hosting one of two Mier automobiles, which were created in the early 1900s by Syracuse resident Sheldon Harkless. The Mier automobile was a type of horseless carriage, and Harkless later sold his blueprints for the automobile to the Ligonier Carriage Company, where it remained in production

for four years. The machine featured at the Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum is a 1906 model, while a similar unit from 1908 was sold at auction in 2020.

Clemons offers tours of the museum free of charge, and is happy to welcome groups of all sizes. She is well-versed on the stories of Syracuse and its environs, along with the indigenous people who once roamed the region. Clemons also notes that donations are always graciously welcomed, provided that the offering has relevance to the Syracuse area. “I encourage the owner to call in advance to make sure it is something that we can earnestly use as a display item,” Clemons says. “If a person has an item they would just like to show me, I usually would love to see it.”

She offers an example of a recent museum patron who visited the museum with a number of family antiques in tow, all from the Civil War area, including a muzzle loader that belonged to his great-grandfather. “I was Youth History Club

so excited to just see and hold the items, and talk to him about each piece,” Clemons says.

For those who fancy a glimpse of historic Lake Wawasee and the Syracuse community, there is a searchable database of archives and images, totaling approximately 4,000 files, which can be viewed any time at syracusemuseum.org. The site is also a valuable tool for researching genealogical links.

The museum has a very full calendar of events for 2023. Many of the seasonal events are conducted in collaboration with the community center, such as the Easter Egg Hunt, the Harvest Festival and Breakfast With Santa. In the summertime the museum team sponsors a number of its own programs. Clemons previously led a Youth History Club for school-aged children, where the students learned about farming, bread baking, paper making, blacksmithing, as well as Native American and settler homesteads. She notes that a favorite class involves the art of atlatl making and training. Guest speakers are often featured, including an archaeologist from the Department of Natural Resources, which ties in with Indiana Archaeology Month. The museum also teams up with ChautauquaWawasee for historical boat tours and other historically themed events.

The Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum is entirely funded by grants and donations, and receives no local, state or federal funding. The museum is open all year long.

The facility is located at 1013 North Long Drive in Syracuse. To learn more, schedule a tour or bring in donations, call 574-4573599 or visit syracusemuseum.org.

Michelle Episcopo, managing director of Heartline Pregnancy Center, 1515 Provident Drive, Suite 180, Warsaw, Indiana, says the organization has helped many people by providing numerous invaluable services to those who need them.

The center is a nonprofit organization that provides a professional, sincere and nonjudgmental environment where clients can

experience unconditional support during pregnancy and parenthood.

“Heartline offers many services, including pregnancy testing, first trimester ultrasounds, prenatal and parenting Classes, pregnancy loss support and fatherhood mentoring,” Episcopo says. “Every service we provide is also free of charge.”

Heartline Pregnancy Center also has a boutique to help parents.

“We have a wonderful boutique

called BABE Boutique that partners with almost 60 doctors, medical groups, nonprofit and government agencies and local foundations,” Episcopo says. “Parents can earn BABE coupons and redeem them for many items, ranging from diapers, clothes and formula to even larger items, like cribs, car seats, strollers and more.”

Episcopo notes that Heartline Pregnancy Center wants to help people during trying times.

“At Heartline, our hope is that every woman

and man who find themselves in a difficult parenting circumstance would feel safe, hopeful and free of judgment as they meet with our staff to find solutions,” she says. “We want them to know that we value their life and that their unborn babies are also valuable and worth protecting.”

Dave Koontz, executive director of Heartline Pregnancy Center, says the center began providing services in 1985.

“A group of concerned individuals saw a need in the community to help women experiencing unexpected pregnancies with services that would help them through their pregnancy and parenting,” Koontz says.

Episcopo added that Heartline Pregnancy Center offers services for mothers and fathers before and after birth.

“We offer free services to mothers and fathers during pregnancy and until their

child’s 5th birthday,” she says.   Helping Families

Koontz believes the organization has helped many families. “The team at Heartline has been able to help women and men experiencing unexpected or difficult pregnancies by giving them the physical and emotional support that they often aren’t receiving from their support system,” Koontz says. “The staff has the opportunity to build relationships with clients that not only help them through the pregnancy and parenting challenges but will also help positively impact the generations that will come after them.”

Koontz added that it’s also an opportunity to do more to help people become better parents. “Many of these women and men haven’t experienced what successful parenting looks like,” Koontz says. “This is their opportunity to improve their ability to parent and provide their children with good examples of what appropriate

“I’ve been privileged to be able to be a part of the Heartline team over the past six years and watch their professionalism and compassion as they work with clients who often are in difficult situations,” Koontz says. “Those situations can become even more challenging when a pregnancy is thrown into the mix. I’ve watched our team give our clients the tools they need to navigate the pregnancy and become more confident and independent individuals and parents.”

Language Matters

Episcopo is enthusiastic about a new program at Heartland Pregnancy Center.

“This year, in our effort to reach our Spanish speaking community, we started working with an organization called

Language Matters,” she says. “We’ve really enjoyed learning about cultural differences and expanding our knowledge of the language. We also have staff available to provide services to parents who feel more comfortable speaking Spanish.”

Episcopo notes that Heartline is also involved with high schools.

“Many people are unaware that we are involved in our local high schools,” she says. “Heartline provides parenting classes in high schools for young parents. We also teach sexual risk avoidance through the Decide for Me program each semester during health class. We’re always looking to expand to other local high schools that may be interested in partnering with us.”

Duane Kuhns was a well-established employee of a rising local company when

those initial flashes of inspiration came to his mind.

Kuhns was fortunate to have a steady, secure job close to home in Nappanee,

gaining a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the field of utility trailer manufacturing. He was an integral part of the workforce with a growing business called Aluminum Trailer Company, or

spanning 12 years, Kuhns made a leap of

faith. He was finally ready to parlay his natural abilities and range of skills into something more. Something that would upgrade and revolutionize the medium of trailer manufacturing into works of custom craftsmanship.

So, Kuhns formed a partnership with his brother, Steven, and together, the brothers launched Precision Custom Services in the spring of 2022. Their mission is to offer repairs and customization to a vast array of trailers.

And then, after a career with

“We can handle any type of repairs, both exterior and interior, and we can install cabinetry, plumbing, basically anything that goes on inside or outside of the trailers,” Duane Kuhns says.

Ultimately, the goal of Precision Custom Services is to serve as a one stop shop for whatever needs a potential customer would have. The list of amenities that the Kuhns duo can install in a unit includes custom lighting, kitchen outfitting, doors, ladder racks, welding repairs, and far more.

Thus far, Kuhns says, much of their influx of work has come from regional clients, but they have been entrusted with projects from as far away as New York. They are grateful and appreciative of the forward momentum through which their new enterprise has been driven. Yet at the same time, “Starting a brand-new business takes time. Right now, we’re just working

part-time, but I’m hoping to go full-time next year,” Kuhns says.

Another vision that Kuhns hopes to see come to fruition in 2023 is the creation of a small shop, something that Kuhns can have on site, so that customers can stop in and purchase parts. Kuhns continues to harbor optimism that their specialized and individualized focus, along with their pledge to design the dreams of their clients, will keep things on the rise for their countryside business. And with that mindset, Precision Custom Services seems destined to develop into a venture that is a step ahead and a step above.

To schedule a consultation with Precision Custom Services, call Kuhns at (574) 354-1384 or send an e-mail to precisionservices@ibyfax.com.  The business is located at 27601 County Road 50, just north of Nappanee.

EXPLORE ALL THAT TEA CAN DO FOR YOU

“Thank you, but I don’t like tea…”

Wait, what? You don’t like tea? You mean you have tried over 1,000 teas and you don’t like any? You’ve tried them hot and you’ve tried them cold, and you don’t like a single one? Don’t you understand that there are an astonishing number of health benefits to this simple drink? This is a beverage for all generations. Tea can enhance your health and well-being.

Not only is tea a phenomenal beverage, but you can also cook with it. How about adding it as a dry rub on your choice meat for the grill? Add some to your batter for your muffins or waffles. Tea also makes a great rinse for your hair. It can also soothe your skin. Come in to New Kitchen Store and browse through our teas. We will even brew a cup for you while you shop - just ask us.

Let’s take a look at different types of tea. White, green, oolong, black and pu-erh (such a fun word to say) - these all come from the camellia sinensis plant. The processing of the plants determine what type it will be. Included in the tea mix would be rooibos, matcha, chai and herbal teas.

Matcha is the whole leaf (minus stems and veins). It is then ground into powder form, making it rich in fiber and vitamins. Matcha can also enhance mood and aid in concentration.

Herbal tea includes herbs, spices and plants blended together for an herbal infusion - now that sounds like an exotic drink! Now, let’s take a look at some of the benefits of tea.

Antioxidants in tea help protect brain cells and free radicals.

Polyphenols in green tea may improve bone quality. This tea provides the richest health benefits. It has polyphenols, flavonoids, vitamins E, C, A, B2, D - plus, it may help to reduce cholesterol by lowering blood lipids. Do your own research on this powerhouse. You will be amazed at the benefits it provides.

Polyphenols in black tea may help to inhibit bacteria growth in the mouth.

Matcha tea may help to fight cancer, improve digestion and help the skin. Matcha also contains anti-aging properties. It does contain caffeine, but you won’t come crashing down after you drink it, for it contains L-theanine and provides for a continuous energy boost throughout the day.

Tea will last for years if you store it properly. Store tea in a cool, dark place. Make sure it is sealed properly so it won’t absorb any odors.

Here are some fun and interesting facts on tea…

Grouchy? Drink chamomile and lavender. Insomnia? Chamomile can help to bring you into slumber land.

Sore throat? Oolong or green tea can help to reduce inflammation (adding honey can increase the benefits and healing).

Stressed? Go for black tea. Add a touch of honey or lemon if you wish. The amino acid called L-theanine may help to induce a calmer, more relaxed feeling.

Spider/bug bite? Soak a tea bag in hot water and then apply it to the bite (do this a few times during the day). Tea contains antiinflammatory and antibacterial properties. You can also give this a try for poison ivy.

Now for a little tea etiquette…

Don’t let your teaspoon crash against your bone china cup and don’t leave your spoon in your cup - that is what your saucer is for. Make sure the spoon handle is in the same direction as your

cup handle.

When you are done with your tea, place your spoon in your cup. If you are hoping for more, place your spoon on the right side of your saucer.

No need to hold your pinky out - that is now considered to be snooty!

So how about a cup of tea? Drink it, eat it, beautify with it or soothe with it. Find all your tea and tea implements at New Kitchen Store, located at 330 Liberty Street in Walkerton. Call 574-5862745 or visit newkitchenstore.com for more information.

LEGACY

Samantha Towne and Shanna Hazen are cousins, but also good friends who share the same values concerning education. Thanks to them and other supportive families, Rochester area parents now have an option to send their children to a private Christian school where the curriculum is based on Biblical truths. Legacy Christian Academy, located at 5288 North Old US Highway 31, is halfway through its first year.

The Academy is not affiliated with any church and operates independently. Towne serves as the director while Hazen is the head secretary and assistant director. Both had the opportunity to attend a private Christian school while growing up.

“My husband and I graduated from a private Christian school in early 2000s,” Samantha Towne says. At one point while I was growing up, there were five private Christian schools in

the Fulton County area. By the time we had a child of our own, there was only one remaining and it only accepted students from its own church. Starting a Christian school is something I wanted to do for a while; it had been on my heart and mind for a few years. Then in the summer of 2021, Shanna stepped in.”

At the time, Hazen, who has nine children, had been homeschooling for over eight years. In May of 2019, her second to youngest son, then two years old, was diagnosed with cancer. With her threemonth old baby in tow, Hazen continued to homeschool throughout her toddler’s treatment. She used FaceTime from his hospital room to teach her children who were at home. It wasn’t an easy task and she wished there had been an educational alternative where the teachings fell in line with her family’s beliefs. She is so grateful that her son is now in remission and attends kindergarten.

“God has been so good to us. I wanted to give back to the community. There were so many people in the community that were homeschooling but wished there was another choice,” Hazen says.

“I was sort of shocked that Shanna wanted to do something other than homeschooling since she had done it for so long and was so

committed to it,” Towne says. “At the time my youngest was in preschool and my other two children were attending Columbia. We were happy with Columbia, but I felt the Lord tugging at my heart to do something different. I was thinking of homeschooling for the 2021-22 year,” she says.

In the fall of 2021, Hazen and Towne began

to homeschool together. During that time, they did a lot of planning and gradually transitioned to the way they would run the school. They were able to rent space from the Geneva Center Retreat, Camp and Conference Center in Rochester. The school opened in August of 2022 with 28 students spanning from kindergarten through 12th grade. Curriculum is provided

from the A.C.E. company along with textbooks and materials from Akeba. Both businesses are rooted in Christian values. The Academy’s teachers are not just mothers of students, but educators from the community who want to teach with a Biblical prospective and believe in the school’s mission.

“It’s not a one room school; there are separate classrooms for all grade levels and a typical day begins with pledges, scripture memorization and prayer requests. Older students switch classes. We have a retired public school physical education teacher who volunteers to teach P.E. each Monday. We have art class on Friday and offer extra classes such as library and Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) classes,” Towne says.

Every Wednesday, two chapel services are held. For students in kindergarten to sixth grade, biblical songs are sung. The services for older students are led by volunteer pastors from area churches. Remarks are tailored to dovetail the yearlong Bible memorization plan.

Enrollment applications are available on the school’s website. The Academy operates on funds generated from modest tuition and efforts are made to keep it affordable. Also on the website is a donate button. There is some scholarship money available which has been donated from several community churches.

“Our mascot is a crusader- someone who rallies for change,” Towne says. “The logo has a helmet, shield and sword which represent the armor of God. The name Legacy Christian Academy reflects the fact that this school is more than just for our own kids. We want to leave a legacy that will last, not something that would close when our kids are grown. One thing that has really touched me is that kids just genuinely love being here. It is a safe place with a great atmosphere.”

Legacy Christian Academy is located at 5288 North Old US Highway 31 in Rochester. You can reach the Academy at (574) 835-4961 or visit their website at legacy-christian.org.

STURDY SUCCESS

CUSTOMERS COUNT ON QUALITY AND VARIETY AT LAMBRIGHT ALUMINUM

Norm Mishler, co-owner of Lambright Aluminum by Six Mile Welding in LaGrange, says he enjoys owning a family-operated business.

He treasures the time he gets to spend at a business that everyone in his family loves.

“My wife, Katie, is a co-owner of the business,” Mishler says. “She works very hard to make this the successful business it is. She does a wonderful job.”

Mishler notes that four of their children work at Lambright Aluminum.

“Our son, Myron, is responsible for our production,” Mishler says.

“He has a lot of duties that he is able to perform very well. Our daughter, Loretta, is responsible for all of our aluminum orders and processing the inventory, and all of the shipping.”

Mishler also has twin sons, Dale and Daryl, who serve as welders at Lambright Aluminum. They also thoroughly enjoy their work.

“I also have two nephews and one niece that work here,” Mishler says. “My father, John, also works here, and he punches holes. I handle everything that is done on the aluminum side of the business. We have a total of 11 employees.”

Mishler started Six Mile Welding, the welding side of the business, in 2005.

“I worked in the RV business at Keystone RV in Goshen, Indiana, for a while before I started my business,” he says. “I did not see a future in the RV factory so I decided it was time to go out on my own.”

Mishler started the Six Mile Welding side of the business in a little hog barn.

“I previously had a hog business,” Mishler says. “The prices on the hog market fell in the 1990s so it was time to do something else. Welding is something that has always fascinated me, and I decided it was something I could do more of. We just started out slow with the welding side of the business and it grew from there.” Mishler was fortunate to have a steady workload.

“We also got busy making chairs for Lambright Comfort Chairs and that was great,” he says.

Mishler eventually took over Lambright Aluminum from Owner Raymond Lambright. “I took two different companies and combined them,” Mishler says. “We have a lot of high-quality

aluminum products to choose from. We are the leading welding and fabrication specialists in the area.”

Mishler notes that this includes a lineup of hose reels that are 100% aluminum or stainless steel. “No part will rust,” he says. “We have cart-style and wall-mount-style reels that are excellent.”

The laundry carts at Lambright Aluminum are very popular.

“They are our number-one seller,” Mishler says. “There are a lot of women who use these when they are doing their laundry, and we sell a lot of those. We also have laundry tubs, aluminum

spinning wash lines, and battery carts. Another hot item is our aluminum folding clothes-drying rack. The advantage of these racks is that an aluminum rack draws heat, and you can put them on a heat register and they will dry faster.”

Lambright Aluminum also makes bike racks, buggy trailers and play carts for kids.

“Kids love them,” Mishler says of the carts. “They enjoy pushing and pulling them. They are especially popular with smaller children. We also make generator carts and we can make them in three different sizes. We also make lawn and garden carts.”

Mishler notes that their mailboxes are also popular. “We make them

in two different sizes,” he says. “We also make ping-pong tables, pony carts, and aluminum and poly screen doors. We make the screen doors custom sized. We also make folding step stools, wheelbarrows, and wood carts to haul firewood. They are all aluminum. Ninety-five percent of our work is aluminum.”

Mishler says he has been blessed with regular customers who praise their work and keep returning to buy more. “We have some really good-size accounts and that has really helped the business grow to where it is today,” he says.

SIMPLY STYLISH BUTTERFLY BOUTIQUE IN PLYMOUTH TREATS PATRONS LIKE FRIENDS

Watching a butterfly flitter about in nature is a wonderful experience. Butterflies also often carry emotional and spiritual connections. That is the reason that Laura Mann named her Plymouth clothing store after butterflies.

“After my mother passed away in 2012, butterflies kept showing up at important events in my life - my daughter’s wedding, my son’s graduation,” Mann says. “Mom was clearly making her presence known, so I decided to call the store Butterfly Boutique.”

Mann opened the store in November of 2020 by renting a small space inside another location, Thistle and Cove, a vendor market located in downtown Plymouth. She moved into her current location on Michigan Street in April.

Mann says downtown Plymouth is an ideal location, from both a business and personal point of view.

“Downtown Plymouth merchants have been working hard to revitalize the area and I wanted to be a part of it,” Mann says. “Plymouth is my hometown and I love seeing the hustle and bustle return to downtown.”

A lifelong resident of Plymouth, Mann has found a career in public service. Her positions have included a 911 dispatcher, the victim-assistance director and, currently, the promotion of the city coordinator for the City of Plymouth. These roles have given her a unique perspective on people and on the progress the city has made in developing its downtown area.

Part of being a business owner is meeting and greeting customers, and running a small business in a small town is an added benefit for owners like Mann. Small-business owners have a different philosophy about their business and the community than some chain stores or big retail centers. The connection Mann makes with her customers is one of the many benefits she receives from Butterfly Boutique.

“I love becoming friends with folks that come into the store,”

Whether her customers are looking for something casual and comfortable, something that is festive for the holidays, or a dressy option, Mann tries to keep her selections current and appropriate for the season. Social media is one way she promotes her newest merchandise and special pricing, or deals for regular and new customers.

“I wanted to open a boutique that catered to women of all ages, sizes and genres of fashion,” she says. “I wanted to offer an alternative to leaving town, to be able to buy fashionable clothes.”

Her store is size-inclusive. She stocks women’s sizes from extra small to 3X, offered at affordable prices.

As part of the business community, Mann also takes part in the special events planned by the Downtown Merchants Association, such as the holiday kickoff in November and special hours during the holiday shopping season. This camaraderie makes working and shopping a pleasant experience.

The store is in the heart of the historic business district. With windows facing this main thoroughfare, she can display new selections and add to the vibrancy of a burgeoning downtown shopping district. Her storefront, adorned with a red and

SWEET MAKER

TAKES A BITE OF SUCCESS IN BOURBON

Cindy Fuller, owner of Homemade by Cindy, took her love of making sweet treats and turned it into a business she enjoys.

“I do all of my own work and sell my goods at The Standard, which is located at 210 North Main Street in Bourbon, Indiana,” Fuller says.

Fuller had a dream of one day having many people enjoy her baked goods. She considers herself lucky and fortunate to be able to work every day doing something she would be doing all of the time anyway. She is thrilled that she has come a long way since the business began, and glows when people tell her how much they love her delicious food.

“Homemade by Cindy started about

five years ago in my home and moved into The Standard when they opened,” Fuller says. “I only sell my baked food at The Standard at this time.”

Fuller says she was encouraged by her family and friends to start Homemade by Cindy. They inspired her to make more of her cupcakes, pies and cookies for hundreds of other people to enjoy. She is very grateful for their kind and positive words.

“Homemade by Cindy started when I wanted to make homemade treats for my kids to bring to day care for their birthdays,” Fuller says. “My husband, Jordan, told me how tasty they were, and encouraged me to sell at our local farmers market. He is the most supportive husband and he has stayed up many a late Friday night to help me prepare for different farmers markets.”

The business took off from there, and has

continued to grow.

“Some people initially asked if they could put in orders and it just kind of snowballed,” Fuller says. “Jordan’s parents, Jeff and Jayne Fuller, opened The Standard and things just got progressively busier, and I am loving it.”

The Standard, which also sells antiques, has been a popular place in Bourbon since it opened in February of 2015. The successful business is also well-known for its award-winning ice cream.

Fuller says she uses nothing but the absolute best when she makes her cupcakes, pies, cookies and other items.

“All my goodies are made from scratch and I only use real butter,” Fuller says.

Customers have their favorite treats and recommend them to family and friends. The positive word of mouth from loyal and

returning customers has enabled Fuller to keep moving in the right direction, and she wants to make sure her popular items are on hand for her fans.

“The chocolate chip cookies and frosted sugar cookies are most definitely my bestsellers, especially around the holidays,” Fuller says. “The cherry pies and Dutch apple pies are also favorites.”

Fuller has her own favorite treats.

“My personal favorite things that I make are either the Nutella cupcakes or Reese’s cupcakes,” she says. “The Nutella cupcake is a chocolate cake with whipped Nutella frosting, drizzled with warm Nutella. The Reese’s cupcake is a chocolate cake with a peanut butter filling, frosted with chocolate buttercream and topped with chopped Reese’s cups. I have also made cake versions of them. I also love the peanut butter cookies because they were my late grandpa’s favorite. I have happy memories when I bake them.”

Other popular Homemade by Cindy treats sold at The Standard include blueberry pie, strawberry pie, turtle cheesecake cupcakes, triple chocolate cupcakes, peanut butter pie, coconut cream pie, cherry chip cupcakes, sugar cream pie and caramel cream pie.

Fuller’s treats have led to a strong and dedicated following in the Bourbon community.

“I also make custom birthday cakes and cupcakes,” Fuller says. “I was once asked to

make a birthday cake featuring Halloween and zoo animals. That was a fun one to make. I ended up with some trick-ortreating zoo animals.”

Fuller notes that she is always looking for new customers that will enjoy all of the delicious baked goods from Homemade by Cindy.

Landmark Sign Group in Chesterton is celebrating 40 years in the business of creating quality signs. As the largest custom sign company in Chicago and Northwest Indiana, it has produced and installed projects all over the United States and even internationally. However, the company team takes great pride in developing signs for small businesses, area schools, doctor offices and medical facilities.

Noted for its outside-the-box and innovative signage, the company takes abstract ideas all the way to installation. Examples are Chicago’s iconic Goodman Theatre marquee, Topshop/ Topman in the Las Vegas Fashion Show mall, and restaurant projects such as Bar Louie, located from Wisconsin to Florida. Not forgotten, though, are local projects that helped the company grow to its current level of success. No job is too small, and renovating and cleaning signs are still part of the business.

the 50 states - nothing in Alaska yet - and five countries,” Moorehead continues. “We have done signs for some very high-profile clients such as Harry Caray’s in downtown Chicago, the Blue Cross Blue Shield building in Chicago, the Music Box Theatre in Chicago, the Gary SouthShore RailCats baseball team and Centier Bank in Indiana. We have also done signs for our local businesses such as Living Hope Church, Northwest Hospital, the LaPorte school system, Culver Community Schools, H&T Electrical, Hearthfire Self Storage, Valpo Parks, and the Boys & Girls Club.”

When asked about the resurgence and popularity of retro neon signs, Wallsmith shares something surprising. What some people might think are neon signs today are made from plastic-covered LED lighting. Users reap many benefits from this technology such as low electricity usage, hence less cost, plus safety advantages. The lights don’t get hot and the flexible material the lights are encased in won’t shatter. Often, unless someone gets very close to the sign, it is hard to tell that it isn’t a true neon light.

Since the company produces signs in many places, employees love to point them out to their families. When Moorehead took his son to college in California, they were driving along a highway. He was able to proudly point out a sign that had been manufactured by Landmark.

“We like to pride ourselves on being able to do any job, whether it’s a high-profile job that will take weeks of planning and coordinating, to your local pizza place that only takes two weeks to build and install,” Moorehead says. “We make each job a top priority, and want to make sure that everyone feels important and is happy with their new sign.”

Landmark Sign Group is located at 7424 Industrial Avenue in Chesterton. For more info, visit landmarksign.com, email info@landmarksign.com, or call 877-7629577. View projects and see videos of installations on Facebook and Instagram.
