Fifty years ago, Bart’s Water Sports looked very different than it does today. Technology has changed some of the ways this North Webster business icon interacts with customers. Customer service, quality products and a connection to the community are still as

The company was founded in 1972 by Bart Culver, a tournament water skier and North Webster native. He was inducted into the Indiana Water Ski Association Hall of Fame. Because fellow skiers around North Webster tend to prefer pro-level equipment, Culver recognized the demand and started selling skis and other equipment out of a small farmhouse in North Webster. He then developed his original mail-order watersports company, supplying water sports and boating accessories to customers worldwide.

From that farmhouse location his customer base grew, and in 1977 he moved to a second location on the southern edge of North Webster. After more growth and 18 years later, the new building and current location was built north of the town. Through the years, his company has grown exponentially and has hired local people for full-time, part-time and seasonal opportunities year after year. Manager Mike Wilson was one of those seasonal workers. He started with Bart’s in 1979. As a teacher, he was looking for a summer job. He went full time in 1988. This year the Bart’s team celebrates five decades of supplying water-sports enthusiasts and lake lovers with equipment,

For the 50th anniversary celebration, commemorative apparel, cups and other merchandise are available now, with a customer appreciation event planned for the summer season, possibly around July 4th. Whatever method they choose, the Bart’s team is ready to provide excellent service and quality products, according to Wilson and Lisa Strombeck, customer service supervisor. Bart’s still stocks a selection of skis and accessories, as well as wakeboards, paddleboards, kayaks and more. A popular trend today is wake surfing, which requires a high level of skill and involves surfing wake from a boat. Other products focus on fun on the water, such as tubes, trampolines and toys. Water mats, which are flotation platforms that can be rolled up and used off a boat or a deck, are also very much in demand with today’s lake crowds. “We try to get an idea of what the customers are looking for and what their interests are,” Strombeck says. “We ask questions and guide them.”

“We have many loyal customers who have been with us for many years,” Strombeck says. ocation, location, location” is a phrase that helps realtors sell properties, but it is also a good reason to go to work, especially when that location is on the lakes in the region. It certainly was an incentive for Brandon Alfano, the owner of Alfano’s Pier and Lift LLC. “I love the fact that I was outside every day and always moving around from job site to job site,” he recalls. “Each day was something new - people to meet, projects to complete or problems to help create solutions for.” After working for his uncle Mark’s construction company, Alfano learned about installing and removing piers. He says he quickly fell in love with “lake life.” “It was as if I was being paid to be on a permanent vacation,” Alfano says. Alfano opened his business in February of 2020. Experienced in the business, he

spent 15 years working at other companies including Rookstool’s Pier Shop, Carmen Pier, and Davidsen’s Pier Service, before deciding to branch out on his own. “I learned to do piers by working next to the most intelligent people in this line of work,” Alfano says. His first job in the pier business was at Carmen Pier. He eventually went on to work for Rookstool’s and then Davidsen’s. At Davidsen’s, Alfano says he learned to refine all the skills he had developed along the way.

The services he provides include the installation and removal of new and used piers and boat lifts, as well the painting and repairing of piers that need maintenance. One type of pier that eliminates pier maintenance is the Brock Deck pier, which Alfano can offer to customers. One customer perk that Alfano says sets him apart from other companies is a 24hour service call guarantee. This guarantees that he or his crew will be on-site within 24 hours to assess a problem with a customer’s pier or lift. Usually, he says, the problem can also be fixed within that time.

“Lake life is short enough already,” he says. “I grew up on the lakes. I know how it feels to look out, wanting to fish or go on a boat ride, and your pier isn’t in. We can relate to wanting to enjoy the short lake season by having the things you need to enjoy the lake life.” Alfano’s business requires his six-person crew to work in all kinds of weather and conditions. Work begins as soon as the ice comes off the lakes, and the pace is hectic. The expectation is to get piers and lifts installed by Memorial Day and July 4. “These are two major dates that really make lake life fun for our customers,” Alfano says. Then, after Labor Day until the end of October, it’s busy again for those in the pier and lift business. This is the time when piers and lifts are removed and stored for the winter.

“We have to balance this by working long days, and dealing with the cold weather and water, wind, rain and snow,” Alfano says. However, there are perks that offset the less enjoyable days on the lake. Even driving the barge that helps move the crew and lifts from job site to job site means that Alfano is spending time on the lake. “It’s a joy to be able to drive around the lake daily,” he says. “Some people plan trips to the lakes but we have the ability to work on it daily and get paid to do so.” He is familiar with the lake life of the region. He attended Columbia City High School and grew up on Lake Tippecanoe, spending summers at his grandparents Stuart and Judy Alfano’s house. “Every day on the lake was awesome,” he recalls. He is engaged to Kelsey Decker. The couple welcomed their first child, a son, Brandon Stuart Alfano Jr.

ave Wagner will never forget the day that his son Justin approached him with the idea of opening a paintball park in Knox in the early 2000s. “I said, ‘Are you crazy? No one is going to come to Winamac, Indiana,’” Dave says. However, it didn’t take long for Justin to convince him to give it a shot.

Thanks to Dave’s experience in construction, they had the skills needed to create an incredible experience for others to enjoy. “We ended up with a lot of unique fields you won’t see anywhere else in paintball,” Dave says. Through the years they have continued to use common items to create their obstacles, like grain silos, shipping containers, railroad ties, highway signs and so much more.

Paintball is a high-intensity game that people of all ages and walks of life can enjoy to create good memories that will last a lifetime. “A lot of people view paintball as a bunch of tough guys going out and shooting each other with paintballs and it hurts,” Justin says. They decided that if they were going to do it, they would do it right. “There’s some negativity about it. It’s kind of like an amusement park where you go to all the different rides.” Even from the start, the business model was complex - a multimap park, each one themed differently to enhance the players’ experiences. They started with one field in 2004, and throughout the next 17 years they built on, a little bit at a time. The first six years represented an incredible learning curve for the

father-son team. “Until the year 2010 we didn’t even know if the business was going to make it, but we stuck with it,” Dave says. “It was hard at times.” Today, Fort Knox is 14-field park and they have safety equipment available for anyone who wishes to rent instead of buying their own. Players have the option of playing in an Old West town, in Area 51, on a model of a pirate ship from the Bermuda Triangle, in Alcatraz, on an exact replica of a popular “Call of Duty” setting,

Next year the Fort Knox team will celebrate their 20th anniversary. They are arguably one of the best paintball parks in the states, if

Can you really trust those online reviews? That’s why enlisting the services of a travel professional like Kari Huff is a wise decision that can eliminate stress and make sure your

vacation meets your expectations. Huff started her career as travel agent affiliated with CS Elements Travel in February of 2020. It was not the best timing for this new career as COVID-19 largely shut down travel for several months. Huff saw it as an opportunity to learn more about destinations she could recommend, and be informed of what travel restrictions could impact her clients at their destination choice.

“We watched these restrictions closely because they could change daily,” she recalls. “That way we could advise people on what to expect.” Huff works out of her home in Knox. She got started in the travel business as a busy mom with a big family, with the task of planning the family vacations. “I was planning our own trips and loved it,” Huff says.

She started planning trips for friends and it became a side hustle for her. Now, it’s a career. Disney is one of her areas of expertise, developed through her own family’s vacations. Huff also specializes in allinclusive trips to the Caribbean, large-group travel and destination weddings. “If anyone is interested in a trip, reach out to me,” Huff says. When planning a trip, Huff offers some tips to make the process easier. First, consider the budget. That can determine the location, and the level of accommodations and activities available.

Some people just want to relax, Huff says. Huff describes her role as a travel agent as a “personal concierge.” Often, the travel agent has traveled to the resort or destination and has firsthand knowledge that is helpful in helping to plan a vacation for clients. Travel agents also work for the client, and can step in when flights are canceled or when problems occur during the trip. Huff will call the airline and deal with making new arrangements, for example, so her clients don’t have to spend their vacation time attending to this time-consuming task. “Travel agent services are free,” Huff says, adding that this is misunderstood by many people. Clients pay for the travel package and her services are compensated by the hotels, resorts and other suppliers in the travel industry. Disney continues to be a popular destination for travelers and the Dominican Republic is also seeing a lot of interest, Huff says.

Huff grew up in Knox. She and her husband Rob have five children ranging in age from 8 to 17. It is possible for a large family like hers to afford travel, Huff says. Travel is a way to make time in busy lives to do something memorable.

area. It was a good time. It’s wonderful for me to be able to ask my 16-year-old to go turn on the grill and help me make dinner. When Keitha Kunkle, owner of Lilly Pad Boutique, initially purchased the building her business is housed in, she wasn’t completely sure what she wanted to do.

She had a wide variety of fun options to choose from. Kunkle decided to think about which one appealed to her the most, and come up with an idea that would best suit her personality. “I bought the building and decided to either open a boutique or to open an ice cream shop, or maybe a restaurant,” Kunkle says. The boutique was her favorite choice. It also sounded like a lot of fun. Kunkle is happy with the decision she made, and says customers enjoy the high-quality items she has for sale. “I have apparel for men, women and children,” Kunkle says. “I also have some specialty items. I have a lot of Lake Manitou shirts, cups, and some cheese cutting boards, blankets and sweatshirts.”

other services. Service is not limited to cars and pickup trucks. The shop can work on semis, motorcycles and boats too. Winter, unpaved roads and driving in general can take a toll on vehicles. Ice melt can corrode a vehicle from underneath. Grime left too long can ruin the finish on the exterior. Tough trucks can get scratched when hauling items or doing other tasks. One of the services provided is bed liners for pickup trucks. Ziebart uses Rhino Linings, a spray-on bed liner that results in nonskid coating that bonds directly to the truck bed. This treatment is airtight, abrasion and impact resistant, and protects against rust and corrosion. To keep a vehicle in excellent condition, it should be washed once every two weeks. Owens says this is especially important in winter so salt and road grime can be cleaned off before it can cause damage to the finish. There is a service available that provides a ceramic-like finish on vehicles, eliminating the need for frequent washing. This process carries a seven-year guarantee. It is one of more than 1,200 service centers in 36 countries, according to the corporate website.

“I worked for Dobson Ford for 11 years as a detailer,” Owens says. He was named the manager of Ziebart Winamac in September of 2018 when the franchise was bought by Dobson and opened for business. Owens supervises and works alongside a crew of five. That is where he learned to detail vehicles. Detailing simply means doing a deep cleaning on the interior and exterior of the vehicle. The deep cleaning that happens to the exterior of the vehicle is a multistep process. Owens explains that the vehicle is shampooed, and then a claying process is applied. This mix of soap and clay forms a layer on the exterior. When it is rinsed off, it takes off road tar and contaminants from the finish. After it is done, the finish is smooth to the touch. There are advantages to coming to Winamac for the Ziebart services. There are other locations throughout the state, but the small-town service in Winamac is what brings people to the door, Owens says. His customers come from Pulaski, Fulton, Starke, White and Cass counties. “People like coming here,” he says. “There is that small-town vibe.” An important component of that small-town vibe involves how Owens and his crew focus on customer service. “I believe in doing the job right, to the best of my abilities,” he explains. “We care about the customer’s vehicle. We treat it like our own.”

f Mark Richards, the owner of Pro Wake Surf Shop, builds it, he is faithful that people will come. The “it” he refers to is his plan to make Syracuse, Indiana, a destination for folks embracing the lake lifestyle, and those looking for something to do, no matter the season. Richards moved into the former Lakeside Fitness off of State Road 13 on Harkless Drive and set up a boat dealership there. The dealership disbanded at the Syracuse location due to inventory complications caused by the pandemic. “We were not sure what we wanted to do with this building,” he says. In 2021, however, he renovated and reconfigured the layout of the 13,000-squarefoot building to include a multilevel, highquality surf shop, and production spaces for his businesses. The Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce members got a preview of the space in March when Pro Wake

Pro Wake Surf Shop is the first step in the plan. The idea came from his wife Patty, Richards says. “She kept pecking at me,” he recalls. The idea was to do something similar to Ron Jon Surf Shop and other nationally known surf shops that market their locations as destinations. Richards says his business ideas and projects usually come about from one of two sources - God or his wife. “When she suggests something, I have to go bigger,” he says. The shop carries a line of lakeshoreliving-inspired clothing, swimwear, totes, sunglasses, sandals and other apparel that can transition from being on the water to coming ashore for dinner. Lake Wawasee draws people to Syracuse during the late spring and summer, Richards says. He is designing his indoor space for people to enjoy even in the winter. He describes his concept as “one stop for a day’s activities,” designed to turn Syracuse into a year-round destination.

The couple met when Abby interned at a restaurant where Craig was working. “It’s a partnership,” Abby says. “He’s the yin to my yang.” The Warsaw community welcomed the couple and their business warmly, Abby says. That is why getting the Give Back program in place was important to them. Organizations taking part in Give Back nights receive 20% of the non-alcohol sales, and commit to having a couple of volunteers on-hand that evening. “This was the one thing that Craig and I wanted to do as soon as possible,” Abby says. “Everyone has been so gracious and helpful since we arrived.” With the restaurant open, the McLarens are looking at expanding with a food truck. They rolled out the truck in May for the Fat and Skinny Tire Fest in Winona Lake. It will serve many of the barbecue menu staples that the restaurant diners enjoy, such as pulled pork, brisket, and fancy mac and cheese. “This gets our name out there,” Abby says. He describes his style of barbecue as “all-American.” “We take influences from everywhere,” Craig explains. “The brisket, for example, starts with a Texas-style rub with New England flavor.” He started as a home brewer in 2012. The day-to-day necessities of running BPAS, and taking care of such a wide variety of animals, depends on the season. Seven months out of the year, BPAS is open to the public. From May to October, depending on the weather, the sanctuary offers staff-guided tours, during which visitors are told stories of how the animals ended up in their forever home at BPAS. The sanctuary also offers internship opportunities and hosts more than 10,000 student tours per year. On top of that, anyone can get involved with BPAS throughout the year by donating. Nichols especially welcomes enrichments, which are a variety of items that promote natural behavior and help animals stay physically and mentally healthy. “Refuge for the rest of their lives,” she says, is the primary goal of the sanctuary. In this fight they have had direct involvement with the infamous “Tiger King,” Joe Exotic, who had 68 tigers confiscated from his possession last spring. The demand to take in animals is constant, and BPAS was asked to take nine of those 68 tigers but could only take four of them. Thankfully, the other 64 tigers found homes due to the network of dedicated animal advocates that BPAS is a part of. Coming together for the selfless goal of providing loving, lifetime care to animals in captivity has made BPAS into the successful sanctuary it is, while also standing as a testament to the positive difference that can come from working charitably together.

Walking into the greenhouse at Country Garden Center in Topeka is a treat for the senses. Fragrant flowers, lush greenery, colorful planters, garden decorations, and the soothing chime of rain chains moved by the breeze all provide instant relaxation. Judy Hostetler often sees stress evaporate when customers come to the center to shop. That is one of the benefits from the work it takes to keep plants thriving and growing.

“This was something I loved to have,” Hostetler says. “My aunt had a greenhouse and I loved to go in there and dream in there. Plants inspired me.” After marrying her husband Maynard 23 years ago, Hostetler says he promised she would see that dream come true. She opted to wait until her six children, including three sons and three daughters, were older to open the greenhouse on the family’s farm. It was an opportunity to give the children and herself something to do, and a chance to work together on something. Some of her children still help

with plant care and customer service. Country Garden Center has grown from one small greenhouse to larger ones. Hostetler says the years have given her regular customers and new friends. Hostetler sells what she grows. Ferns, houseplants, annuals and perennials are popular with customers in the spring. She also stocks vegetable plants for gardens, as well as flowering shrubs, asparagus and grapes. From gardening tools to packages of seeds, the Country Garden Center team tries to stock what people are looking for.

It is located in a rural part of the county, and having supplies people need is helpful and convenient. Along with the friendly greeting from Hostetler, customers can have an experience that leaves them a little more knowledgeable and in a happier frame of mind. The greenhouse also houses a line of potting soil, compost and fertilizers that enhance plant growth, such as the Lobster and Crab Meal, manufactured by Coast of Maine. This company makes and sells products that are organic and can feed a wide variety of plants. “There is something for everybody here,” Hostetler says. Succulents arranged in pots and decorative containers are one of the many popular items drawing customers to Hostetler’s business. Succulents have become one of today’s trends for several reasons, Hostetler explains. The plants
