BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY HOMESERVICES DOES REAL ESTATE RIGHT
Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Kari Lipscomb
Buying or selling a home can be a daunting process. Having a professional help get a potential seller or buyer through the process makes it much easier. Lori Snyder at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices is one of the local professionals recognized for the skills and experience that can make real estate transactions easier. Snyder is the managing broker at the Elkhart office. She is also a designated residential and

commercial real estate broker. Her firm has been in operation since 1945, and continues the tradition of providing real estate knowledge and skills. The firm is ranked number one in Elkhart County in number of properties handled for clients and the dollar volume of those properties, according to statistics from the multiple listing service (MLS) database. It has also earned awards from J.D. Power, the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce and others. One way the firm continues its awardwinning reputation in the industry, Snyder
says, is training. New agents are taught how to show properties, how to use the MLS, how to present and negotiate offers, and how to use technology to be better at their job. “The training makes them better equipped to negotiate offers for the sellers and the buyers, and how to get the deal accomplished for their client,” she says. The training does not only apply to new agents. Even veteran agents benefit from coaching sessions and outside trainings that help them grow their business, Snyder notes. Each agent’s local connections also make a

difference. “Their commitment, their community involvement, their roots here in Elkhart, are important,” Snyder says. “They attend
church where the clients attend church, and their children attend the schools where their clients’ children attended. Many of them are very service oriented and belong to civic organizations.”
With a history that dates back more than 75 years, it is easy to lose count of the number of homes and businesses bought and sold by Berkshire Hathaway agents. Snyder estimates that number is likely in the thousands.

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices was founded in Michiana in 1945 as Associated Realty by Joseph Dunfee Sr. He is credited with establishing the MLS system in the South Bend and Mishawaka market in 1963. When Dunfee’s son Joseph Dunfee Jr. took the reins, the firm continued to grow. Dunfee Jr. brought the first national franchise, Gallery of Homes, to the area and established multiple offices in South Bend and Elkhart as well as Edwardsburg, Michigan. In 1989 the realty became one of the Prudential Real Estate affiliates.

Under the direction of Steve Fase, who partnered with the Dunfee firm in 2013, the realty received a new name, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northern Indiana Real Estate and Michigan Real Estate. In an industry in which timing the market is crucial, knowing when to buy or sell is key. That’s when the advice of a real estate agent can prove beneficial, Snyder says. “The market can change on a dime,” Snyder

says. “For sellers and buyers, life sometimes determines when they need to act. There are always life events for people to move, downsize, upsize, relocate, add a parent or add their kids. People are always moving in and out just because of life events.” If someone doesn’t have an agent already, Snyder hopes they reach out to her company. “A good agent is a person that likes people,” Snyder says. “They are someone who likes variety and diversity. Real estate isn’t just a job, it’s a way of life. Agents are good problem solvers, resourceful, and they are the say-yes-before-no kind of people. They are protective of their sellers and buyers, looking out for their best interests. They can recognize an opportunity when someone needs help, and they help them.” Contact Snyder or any of the 32 agents at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices at 574-293-1010. LAKESIDE LEGACY PATONA BAY MARINA & RESORT HAS BECOME A LEESBURG FIXTURE
Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Kari Lipscomb
There is something special about time spent on the shore of an Indiana lake. That experience creates fond memories for generations of families. Patona Bay Marina & Resort on Lake Tippecanoe has been a part of those memories since the 1930s. It all started in 1904 when George Paton I traveled from Indianapolis to camp at Kalorama Park on the north shore of Lake Tippecanoe. The lake is the deepest natural lake in the state - a feature which makes the Tippecanoe experience one of a kind. “He loved the lake area and sold canoes, fishing boats and sailboats to his friends,” says his grandson Robert Paton, who, with his brother George III, owns and operates the resort, the marina and the boat sale functions of Patona Bay.
Robert Paton (pictured) with his dog Max. They are pictured at the resort office. Patona Bay is dog-friendly.
In 1928, along with his son George II, he moved the boat sales and outboard motor business to the west shore of Lake Tippecanoe. Camping started in 1933 with tents and small trailers. Lighting was provided by a 32-volt Delco generator, Paton recalls. Rental cabins were added in the late 1930s, with additional cabins added in the 1950s. Patona Bay had a resort feel from the beginning, with camping, picnicking, a swimming beach and boating. Other amenities such as the marina came later to supplement the resort. Guests at the resort could take a sightseeing ride on the lake when Paton added a passenger boat in 1935. There were also stops along the north shore including Rowlette Grocery, and on the south shore including Stony Ridge Hotel and the Arcadian Ballroom. As tourist popularity continued, several cottages were built in 1939 to supplement the camping accommodations. Around 1946 George II, an attorney and real estate broker, decided after serving as a prosecuting attorney for Kosciusko County to devote more time to the camping and boating

business. The first marina building was built in 1946, and was a sales and service location for a complete line of Evinrude motors, several boat lines, and marine accessories. George III and Robert grew up working in and building the business. Later George III continued with the operation of the boat business after graduating from college. His brother Robert, a certified public accountant and realtor, came back to the operation to take over accounting and other functions of the management of the business. Today the resort offers 120 camping spaces with full hookups for tents, campers and motor homes, and eight cottages. Paton describes Patona Bay Resort as “a one-stop destination” where families are on their own to enjoy what lakeside living can be, even if it’s for the summer season, a month, or a week or two.

The appeal of the lake for those seeking a little relaxation and fun in the sun and water is not lost on the Paton family. For many, the traditional summer vacation is a stay at Patona Bay. When it’s a holiday, Patona Bay adds to the fun with sponsored activities on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. “Most of the campers come back every season, with some now in the third and fourth generation,” Paton says. Patona Bay’s place in the history of Lake Tippecanoe is assured when the next generation of campers find its way to the shore again and again. The resort is poised to continue to welcome families for many more years, even as it approaches the century mark in the next decade. For Paton, that is the motivation to keep on delivering a lakeside getaway unlike any other.

ON A MISSION THE WINDOW HELPS PROVIDE ESSENTIAL NEEDS FOR THOSE WITH LIMITED INCOME
Staff and Volunteers at The Window Event Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
For more than 54 years, The Window in Goshen has provided services to meet the essential needs of anyone with limited income. The nonprofit, faith-based organization provides food, clothing and opportunities to socialize with others through its programs. After modifying its procedures due to COVID-19 restrictions, it is now returning to pre-pandemic operation.
“The organization was started by a group of pastors and other church men who met for coffee every week, ”says Susi Miller, director of development. “They decided they wanted to do something for the community that would provide some support. Eventually they asked Church Women United of Goshen to take it over. The group expanded the operation by handing out food, clothes and donations. It kept growing. It was later renamed The Window and became a 501(c)(3) organization.”
Through the Food Pantry, Katie’s Kitchen, Meals on Wheels and the Clothes Closet, the organization provides nourishment and clothing. Before the pandemic, it also provided the opportunity for social interaction when doughnuts and coffee were served every morning, plus lunch every day. Unfortunately, programs were substantially scaled back during the pandemic. Now staff and volunteers are eagerly awaiting a full return to business as usual. During lockdowns, the Katie’s Kitchen

team handed out bags of pre-made food. The Food Pantry boxed up food that recipients could pick up once per week. The Clothes Closet completely shut down for a year. Since the facility was closed to the public, however, the building underwent a major refresh that included painting, new floors, new carpeting, and installation of double doors in the receiving area. “Two things never stopped,” Miller says. “Meals on Wheels of Goshen did not stop delivering meals to shut-ins. People were allowed to come from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday to ‘shop’ the at-risk table - things that will expire soon or are dented, but are still perfectly good. There was no limit to how many days in a week someone could come in and fill up two grocery bags.” The Food Pantry, which reopened at the beginning of June, supplies fresh meat, cheese, eggs, pasta, cereal, canned goods such as soup and even snacks like sweets.
18 / THE LAKES / JULY 2022 / TownePost.com
Individuals can again visit the pantry once per month and choose what they personally prefer. All that is needed to access the program is an ID. The number of items received depends on the amount of people living in the household. “We are excited that Katie’s Kitchen will start up again on August 8,” Miller says. “It will serve doughnuts and coffee from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Clothing Closet is open Tuesday morning, and Thursday morning and afternoon. It is staffed completely by volunteers, and the challenge is that we don’t always have staff. If people are interested in volunteering they can go to our website, but the best thing is just to call in.” Miller is planning several events to increase community awareness of The Window. The largest will be an open house on August 5 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to be held at 4:30 p.m. The

celebration will showcase the renovations completed under the leadership of Executive Director Ed Swartley during the shutdown. The annual Outrunning Hunger 5K will return on September 3 to raise funds for the organization. On September 2, a dinner to benefit The Window, a pre-COVID tradition, will be held during Goshen’s First Friday event. Also in the works are several Nelson’s fundraisers in July and October.

“There are a lot of wonderful people involved with The Window,” Miller says. “We have individuals who volunteer once a week and church groups that volunteer once a month. Every day, drivers on staff travel to big-box stores who donate items to us such as goods they are no longer putting on the shelves. It’s still good food. They are just making way to stock something newer. Little Caesars gives us day-old pizza. Individuals come in with eggs and clothing, and large food banks help supply us with foodstuffs. Businesses donate things left at the end of the season that they don’t want to store.” “This is the job I always wanted,” Miller continues. “The other day I was walking out to my car in the parking lot when a guy popped out of his car. He said, ‘Guess what? I got a job. Thanks for keeping me fed, and thanks for the clothes so I had something to wear when I interviewed.’ The Window is a wonderful place.”

Miller’s lumber education included learning the small details that make a difference in the wood industry. “I was able to find out what people were looking for, and what type of furniture and wood were the absolute best for them,” he says. “At dad’s business, people
were looking for wood and furniture that were just a little bit different - something that would stand out and be unique. “Our customers are looking for high quality lumber, good service, and a fair price,” Miller says. “We offer high-quality, above-average lumber that is not just food enough but is ideal for high-end kitchen and furniture shops.” Miller says locals do a lot of outstanding work with lumber, and he gives them many choices. “There are 55 to 60 mills that we purchase from,” Miller says. “We help people narrow down their choices to what really works best for them. We purchase certain woods from certain regions for better color choices.” Miller notes that Miller Lumber also offers a quick delivery service to customers.

“We have two delivery trucks on the road to get lumber to our customers faster, thanks to Nick and Jake,” he says. “We offer nextday delivery service, and same-day delivery service if we can. Service, quality, fair price, and having product available on the floor is always extremely important to us.” Miller’s dedication to his business has paid off. “Miller enjoys seeing businesses succeed and all the jobs they bring to the community, diversification is great!” “We have had many of the same loyal customers on the wholesale side,” he says. “They have really been great. They also tell their family and friends about us, and about the quality lumber we have. They also like being able to find the lumber for their work. I would say we sell about 50% of the lumber for furniture, 30% for RV, and 20% for the kitchen cabinet industry.” Miller notes that most of their business is through orders from customers. “People call it in and we drop it off,” he says. “We have no delivery charge, which a lot of people appreciate.”

Miller also makes customers happy by listening very carefully to what specific lumber products they want. “That’s another advantage of growing up in
the lumber industry,” he says. “We also try to do something every day that saves time for the next day, this helps in getting the least amount of labor in our lumber so we can offer a more competitive price to our customers.” Miller credits his hard-working staff for their dedication to their customers. “We have six full-time employees and three part-time people,” he says. “They always give their best.” Miller is also proud of his community. “The people in LaGrange make it a great place to love,” Miller says. “We are all working to make a difference. Our relationships with people in the area mean a lot. We are a tight-knit community.” Miller adds that he and his staff also promote products that are good for people.

“We promote wood products that are good for the environment, and good for a person’s health,” he says. “Children in a classroom, for instance, are able to relax more with wood in their classroom. Wood really relaxes people. Wood cabinets are very popular. Wood is Mother Nature, and Mother Nature relaxes people.” Miller notes that many of his customers use wood for living-room furniture, as well as kitchen cabinets and other items. “One of the great things about being in this area is that there are so many houses, RVs, and things being built or remodeled,” he says. “We also have a very wide selection of wood to choose from. We have oak, cherry, maple, pine, etcetera. We have 125 items with different thicknesses of wood. We have a very wide variety to choose from.” For you next project or to find out more about Miller Lumber, located at 3030 West 100 North in LaGrange, call 260-463-3461.

MUSIC MATTERS HONEYWELL ARTS ACADEMY FOSTERS MUSICAL EXCELLENCE Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Kari Lipscomb
Honeywell is a company that is well-known for innovative technology across many fields. What few people realize, however, is that Founder Mark C. Honeywell had a soft spot in his heart for the arts, to the point that he wanted to establish something that would celebrate some of the most beautiful parts of culture for generations to come. Where better to establish a center for the arts than in his hometown of Wabash, Indiana? “Mark had a heart for Wabash and he wanted to leave, as a part of his legacy, a community foundation which could be an asset that would be available to all of the community,” explains Honeywell Foundation Board Chairman Dave Haist. Through the years the Honeywell Foundation has evolved to fit the needs of the music community. Today it encompasses
a full fellowship summer institute known as the Honeywell Arts Academy, with three tracks. The first, Resonance, is for innovative musicians. Soundboard is for pianists. The original track, which has been around since 2008 and has gathered great renown among professional bassists, is Wabass Institute, which is for double bassists. Each of these tracks gives gifted artists from around the world an inspirational environment to develop their skills and learn what it takes to thrive as a professional musician, all in an intensive summer session. The students are hand-selected during the application process and come on full scholarship. “The students who come pay no tuition to be involved in this program,” Haist says. “It’s an amazing opportunity for them, and as a result we’re able to attract the cream-of-the-crop talent.” Throughout the students’ stay, they are under the tutelage of faculty mentors and fellowship scholars, spending the day

together sharing knowledge. “If you look at the instructors who come in to share their experience, knowledge and talent with each of these three tracks, that faculty is also folks from around the United States who are affiliated with philharmonics and other arts organizations - just really top talent that is brought in each summer to work with the students,” Haist explains.

There are three sessions each day that include workshops, group performance, entrepreneurial development and so much more. Then, on the final Friday before the end of the session, each track performs a public showcase debut. The Wabass performance is scheduled to take place on July 1.

The alumni from this program go on to make a difference in the world in the area of music. “If you looked at all of the alumni from the Academy, 97% or 98% of them today are involved in some professional way with a philharmonic or with a symphony orchestra, or some other professional music engagement literally all over the country, and some international students as well,” Haist says. “This isn’t just a Wabash thing THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JULY 2022 / TownePost.com
or an Indiana thing. This is really something that has people coming from all over the country. I think it really makes it distinctive.” All of this happens in Eagles Theatre, which has a rich history of its own. In the century that it has been in use, this beautiful fourstory building has been on the vaudeville circuit, used as a movie theatre, and an events venue. After the Honeywell Foundation purchased the theater about 10 years ago, they decided to hone in on their vision for the building’s future. “The Eagles could be far more than a building and far more than a theater,” Haist says. “As a result, the community raised nearly $17 million to fully renovate the Eagles Theatre and to provide funds for future programming.” With those funds, there was a 600-person theater put in with an additional state-ofthe-art movie theater in the basement. The building also has a fully restored historic ballroom known as the Parkview Ballroom, a conference space, and studios for

recording and music lessons. “Every inch of that four-story historic building now has just been totally renovated and is usable as a beautiful facility for all types of art,” Haist says. Even when the Academy is not busy
with students at the theater, it still hosts philharmonics, country-western musicians and more. Moving forward, the Honeywell Foundation expects the Academy to expand with additional tracks so other instrumental
disciplines can be explored, to help gifted musicians on their way to becoming professionals. However, no one fully knows what the future has in store. “There are also whole hosts of other ways the Academy could be engaged with students of different ages, and potentially even students who

JON GATES IS ENJOYING THE LINKS LIFE AT PRETTY LAKE GOLF CLUB Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
An excellent golf course is measured by many considerations - the condition of the greens, the total yardage, toughness of the course, and how well it is maintained. There is also another consideration - access to a top-notch golf shop.
Owner Jon Gates has pro shops that have been included in the 100 Best Golf Shops by Golf Digest publications.
Playing on the golf team for four years, he served as team captain in 1980, was named Jon Gates, the owner of the golf shop at to the All-Mid-American Conference, and Pretty Lake Golf Club in Plymouth, brings was named EMU’s Most Valuable Golfer years of experience and award-winning in 1980. made the 100 Best Golf Shops director’s list three times in his career. He also won three Michigan Sectional Merchandiser of the Year awards and the Indiana Merchant of the Year for public and private clubs. Criteria for these awards included merchandising plans, visuals, and add-ons offered in the shop. Golfers today have access to more product selection than in the past, Gates says. Golf shops need to keep up with the industry.
“Forty years ago, there were maybe 10 different companies that supplied merchandise,” he says. “Now there might be 50 or more.” Customers are also being more price conscious. There are limited big-box stores,
so the local pro shop is often their only option for golf equipment and accessories. Gates also notes that the formality of golf has loosened up. Players are more casual about the game today than in the past. Younger players bring their own
perspective. Gates says it is important to tune into what attracts younger players to golf. They are the sport’s future, he says. That includes how players are drawn to the course, the type of attire to offer in the shop and the way

Gates and his wife have settled into the slower pace of Marshall County after making the move from Detroit. The new lifestyle is very laid back compared with what he is used to. He likes that there are no traffic jams, the cost of living is lower, and its vibe is casual. It is quite different from the hustle and bustle of Detroit, he says. WINNING RECIPE EMBRACE TRADITION BY CRAFTING DISTINCTIVE RECIPE CARDS Writer / Abby Renz Photography Provided
We all have a favorite recipe, whether it be grandma’s famous snickerdoodles with the perfect amount of cinnamon, dad’s prized barbecue sauce for slathering on rib meat that falls right off of the bone, or the secret ingredient to a prize-winning chili at the state fair that you look forward to every year. Now, where would you keep those treasured instructions? One might keep the simple, go-to, mundane recipes on their tablet or laptop, but what about great-grandma’s pie recipes? We surely wouldn’t have those floating around aimlessly through cloudbased software, now would we? And a hurried scrawl on a legal pad doesn’t quite do it justice either. Why don’t we truly honor these precious recipes by writing them on recipe cards, or even creating a recipe book to be enjoyed for generations to come? I have recipe cards for sharing with friends and family, and as an artist I have enjoyed watercoloring my very favorite go-to recipes, meticulously writing all of the instructions screens when the beauty of cursive has been and ingredients. There is something to be largely forgotten. said about handwritten recipe books and cards, a lost art form in an era of digital Recipe cards are what each individual
makes them. You can have basic instructions written in perfect script, include drawings that articulate every ingredient, or even have loved ones write out their recipes as

While I like the idea of a summer bucket list, it can feel a bit overwhelming. I prefer to make a short list, so I feel a sense of accomplishment when I can complete the list. Here are 5 inexpensive ideas to add to your summer bucket list. I guarantee you’ll save money and have some fun this summer.
1.
I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM … VISIT AN ICE CREAM SHOP!
It doesn’t seem like summer unless I’m standing in front of an ice cream stand. I have many fond memories of visiting ice cream shops when I traveled with my family. I enjoy standing in line and chatting with other customers about what they plan to order. Long lines don’t matter to me when there’s an ice cream treat waiting at the end. My favorite ice cream splurges are a hot fudge sundae and a cherry soda with vanilla ice cream. Go with a group of family or friends and each choose something different. Ask for recommendations and try some fun flavor combinations. Make it a contest and vote on who ordered the best ice cream treat. Award the winner a gift card from the ice cream shop.

HAPPY HUMMINGBIRDS. SET UP A HUMMINGBIRD FEEDER.
These tiny birds bring me so much joy. A hummingbird feeder is an inexpensive investment. Most feeders run between $10-$20. You will need a pole or a stand to hang the feeder and they are around $20 or less. It’s easy to make the hummingbird nectar. It’s one part sugar to four parts water (1 cup of sugar 4 cups of water) and let boil. Let the solution cool and fill the feeder. Hummingbirds are attracted to red, so be sure you have some red objects near the feeder. You can have red flowers or even a red patio umbrella. Hummingbirds will visit the feeder a handful of times a day. Believe me, they are fun to watch and sometimes I’ll have three or four at the feeder at one time. Delightful! For more information on hummingbirds, visit the National Audubon Society at audubon.org.
VISIT A FARMERS MARKET
Summer is the time to appreciate local produce and other homemade goods. I enjoy stopping at a local farmers market and thinking of different things to cook. It’s a way for me to jump out of my comfort zone. I set a budget for myself before I go the market. A trip to the market doesn’t have to be expensive. A stop at a farmers market can be one-stop shopping for breads, dairy, produce and meat all in one trip. On a recent trip to my local farmers market, I purchased a loaf of country white bread, a couple of spice packets to make a fantastic meal, and some fresh produce. When I’m finished shopping, I sit on a bench and do some people watching and listen to music. It’s also a good time to see if I need to get anything else. I usually decide to make a few more stops at the market before I leave. THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JULY 2022 / TownePost.com
GO FOR A SUNSET WALK
Some of the best sunsets are during the summer. You can’t beat the mix of amber and violet hues. I take my dog, Louis for long sunset walks, and I always bring my phone. It’s a chance to capture a few photos and send to friends and family. I get some ideas by looking at my neighbors’ yards. As an extra bonus, you’ll be getting in a healthy workout while enjoying a gorgeous sky. Perfection!

CHILL AND GRILL
I can sometimes get into a grilling rut. Summer is the perfect time to shake up your grilling game. I like to make kabobs (veggie, chicken, shrimp, steak), which are inexpensive if you buy the ingredients and assemble them yourself. You can save money by using less meat and more vegetables. Don’t forget to season well with salt and pepper or spice mixes. Serve the kabobs with rice and a feta, tomato and cucumber salad and you’ve got a perfect meal. Grill packets are inexpensive and easy to make. Put veggies and potatoes in aluminum foil and season with salt, pepper and olive oil. Seal them up and cook them on the grill. Fajitas are another fan favorite. Choose your veggies, protein and put them on the grill. Any of these meals can be enjoyed outside. Want to save a little more money? Check the grocery store ads and select your grill meal based on what meat and produce is on sale. Make your meal fun by taking photos of your grilled feast. For more information on grilling, visit foodnetwork.com and search for grilling ideas and recipes.

or more than 45 years, Northern Indiana Power From the Past has been dedicated to educating children and adults about farm machinery of days gone by. The organization began in 1977 by a handful of antique tractors owners who approached the Pulaski County Fair board about exhibiting equipment at the fair. The attraction was so successful that one year later, the organization incorporated and doubled its membership to 16 individuals. This year the members will hold their annual Summer Show from July 14 through 17. More than 40,000 people typically attend the event, which not only showcases and demonstrates antique farm machinery with differing power sources, but also includes a very large flea market, food vendors and live entertainment. Also included are live demonstrations such as blacksmithing, woodworking and apple cider pressing. An important aspect of the organization, which is comprised of both men and women, is encouraging youth who are interested in agricultural careers. Each year it awards up to three scholarships to high school seniors. Recipients are generally involved in 4-H, come from farm families and have shown interest in Northern Indiana Power From the Past. Funds for the scholarships are generated from the yearly Summer Show revenue. Instructions for applying can be found on the

organization’s website. “After being an attraction at the 1977 county fair, eight guys got together and decided to create a club,” says John Crist, president. “Back then each member donated $100, so we started out with $800. The average age of the founders was early 30s. Today we are independent. We don’t ask for grants and we don’t ask for dues - just sweat. We get our money from the show. We hope that scholarship winners will stay involved with us.”
The oldest machines the organization has in its collection are from the early 1900s. Before combines existed, corn and wheat would be harvested and bound. It would lay in the fields until wagons would bring it back to the farm, where the wheat would be threshed and the corn kernels would be taken off the ear. This multi-step process took a lot of manpower, horse power and, later, steam power. From there the grain would go to a grist mill. “Back in the day a lot of folks built their own equipment,” says

“People come from as far away as Canada as well as the west and east coasts,” Hankla says of the show. “Elder farmers love the stuff. At the show they can see demonstrations of equipment they saw being used when they were kids.” “The show’s live entertainment includes a local band every night,” Crist adds. “There is a horse pull on Saturday. There are hand-tooling demonstrations and things on display like an old-fashioned printing press. Each year we highlight a certain manufacturer and this year will feature John Deere.” The 2022 Summer Show will be held in Winamac Town Park, located at 262 East Old State Road 14. Gates will be open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. from July 14 through 17. Visit the organization’s website, winamacpowershow.com, or their Facebook page, for updates and event schedules. Those interested in volunteering and/or becoming a member are encouraged to contact any of the organization’s officers listed on the website. Monthly meetings start at 6 p.m. on Sundays at the Pulaski County Highway Garage, located at 1131 North U.S. Highway 35 in Winamac.

n Kosciusko County, the quality of life enjoyed locally is enhanced by the focus on health and wellness that K21 Health Foundation brings to the community. And after more than 20 years of funding wellness projects in the county, life is better for everyone. “At a personal level, people’s health conditions affect every other part of their life,” says Richard Haddad, foundation president and chief executive officer. “Family, work, play, financial health, relationships and other parts of our lives are enhanced or disrupted by our health. Health and its priority in our lives is ultimately a decision each of us needs to make, but sometimes we have challenges and barriers that keep us from making the best decisions for us.”
WORKING TOWARD WELLNESS
K21 HEALTH FOUNDATION PUTS A FOCUS ON KOSCIUSKO COUNTY RESIDENTS Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
The foundation’s purpose is to fund programs and projects from local organizations that reduce these barriers, and advocate for a healthier community. About $60 million in grants have been awarded since the foundation was established in 1999. The foundation’s grant-making capability was established from the sale of Kosciusko Community Hospital to a larger health-care corporation. With an initial investment of $64 million, the foundation’s resources continue to grow, ensuring that funding will be available in perpetuity. That means those barriers that keep people from living a healthy lifestyle can continue to be identified and resolved.

“We also believe that continued improvement of our community’s culture on healthy living, and increasing the amenities we have in our community, will have generational impact on how people in Kosciusko County live,” Haddad says. “Finally, we don’t think people do well if they try to do it on their own, or are struggling with emotional or behavioral issues.” Haddad says the foundation’s role is to support health-focused initiatives that move the Kosciusko community’s wellness in a positive direction by providing support for programs and organizations for the greatest impact. With this narrowed geographic focus, big grants and investments are there as opportunities come up or needs are identified. One wellness initiative funded by K21 is the continued development of greenways and pathways that will touch every

community in the county, Haddad says. These encourage physical activity. Another is funding for projects in public parks, such as Limitless Park in Winona Lake or pickleball courts in various locations in the community.

“Areas that are not seen as publicly are health services that are offered to those that aren’t getting, or can’t get, the care on their own,” he says. “Examples of these would be medication and dental assistance programs, home care services, and various prevention screening and testing options.” What gets funded has evolved over the years. The early focus of the foundation’s grant giving was on organizations that sought to level access to care or to fill in gaps in health-care services. While these are still important to address and still receive foundation support, recent years have seen funding requests evolve. “Our more recent years have focused on providing active amenities and increasing opportunities for all people to embrace a more active lifestyle,” Haddad says. “The biggest example that is happening right now is we inspired and supported what will now be a permanent ice rink pavilion for our community, so people can have an option in the winter months, when we tend to hibernate, to get out and have some active fun together.” Changes in focus over time reflect changes in culture and lifestyles. While still embracing the mission of community health, what health means to the community has become more expansive. K21 Health Foundation has better defined their definition of health, Haddad explains.

“Over the last 15 years we have tried to better define what health means to the foundation, so our grants could be more impactful and we could communicate to our grantees what areas of our community our mission touches,” he says. Kosciusko is geographically isolated. That means there are many small towns and communities, many of which do not have health-care providers based locally. Transportation is an issue for many, and there is no clear answer as to how to improve this situation. “We can’t make people be healthy, but we can give them an opportunity to be healthy to create an environment where there is a lot of opportunity.” For more information on K21 Health Foundation, visit k21healthfoundation. org or call 574-269-5188. COVERING BASES J LANE FLOORING & DESIGN PROVIDES PLENTY OF VARIETY AND START-TO-FINISH SERVICE Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
Seth Helser and the entire staff at J Lane Flooring & Design in Warsaw have many years of experience in the floor covering business. All jobs and all customers are important to them. The business has been a mainstay in northern Indiana, but it hasn’t remained static. Through the years it has
constantly changed and evolved. Getting back to the level of service customers enjoyed during pre-COVID times is a main goal. “My father was in the business as an installer for many years,” Helser says. “In fact, he had a little store in town until 1983. I grew up working with him. When I was 18 I went out on my own and I’ve been in this

business ever since. One reason we have been successful is that we do everything no one else wanted to do.” A large portion of the company’s business involves multi-state commercial projects. According to Helser, the company works with five or six different school systems each year. Biomedical and many other types of businesses are also customers. The company is well-known for its residential work. It works with each customer during every step of their project by offering a free consultation, precise measuring, detailed estimating, ordering, timely delivery, professional installation and responsible completion. One thing people enjoy is the well-maintained showroom that offers up-to-date styles and lots of ideas. “We take pride in our showroom,” Helser says. “People come in and see our store doesn’t look like a bare-bones warehouse, so they think our products might not be affordable for them, but we are for everyone.

We sell a ton of ceramic tile, hardwood, carpet and vinyl plank.” “The market trends have changed over the years,” he continues. “Back in 2000 it was hardwood and tile, but then laminates changed the game. Then vinyl plank took over. Now the trend, which is driven by what people see on the internet, is going to 100% hard surface with area rugs, which we can custom make. People like vinyl plank because it is waterproof, but high-quality laminate is more scratch resistant and is half the price.” Besides flooring, the business does service applications for kitchens, plus baths and showers. Examples are backsplashes, countertops and decorative tile installations. Wall coverings are also available along with accent pieces to complete the look. It’s a win-win situation, as the charities benefit while room is made for

HEART OF SERVICE
KIWANIS CLUB OF WARSAW SERVES THE COMMUNITY YEAR-ROUND
Writer/ Robert Noah Torres Photography Provided
Kiwanis Club of Warsaw is a nonprofit organization that serves not only the children of its community but the children of the world. The club is part of the broader international service organization, Kiwanis, which is more than 100 years old and has roots in Indiana. The club first opened up in Detroit Michigan on January 21, 1915. Indiana followed soon after and is home to the Kiwanis international headquarters. Kiwanis Club of Warsaw and President Jim Molebash are a part of more than 130 community-lead organizations in Indiana. Amongst many other duties, Molebash’s role is to oversee club meetings —

meetings that follow a certain pattern. The club meets every Thursday. Molebash is an MC of sorts for the weekly meetings and makes sure they follow their common format. The Kiwanis Club gathers, has lunch, and then goes through their ritual opening. They pledge the flag, sing a song, and do the Kiwanis defining statement: “Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.” From there, Molebash goes through announcements, welcomes the guests, and introduces what programs will be coming out and what projects they are working on. All of this lasts around a quarter-hour and is followed by what they call fellowship or ethics. What fellowship looks like in the Kiwanis Club of Warsaw is taking the time to check in, individually, with those in attendance as well as giving them space to announce their own personal news — birthdays, anniversaries, familial achievements, etc. Once this is over, a guest speaker gives a presentation which takes the meeting to its end time. Guests range from animal shelter workers to nonprofit organization heads to local businesses telling their history, which reflects how Kiwanis has a strong focus on community and fellowship. In addition, Molebash is a key member of the governing board and what he calls his “president’s cabinet.” Club meetings are social gatherings as much as they are for helping the children in Warsaw and the world. On the other end, the governing board that Molebash is a part of and that meets

once a month works hard to smooth out the details that come with putting in practice the improvement of ”the world one child and one community at a time” as their mantra goes. Molebash also has a group of experienced Kiwani Club members on his side who meet once every other month and help Molebash make sure he stays on the right path. That group he calls his “president’s cabinet” and includes another key member to the Kiwanis Club of Warsaw, as well as Indiana State Governor-Elect for the greater Indiana Kiwanis chapter, Bruce Andrews. The cabinet and group at large work together in order to provide for the children of the community and the children of the world. Broadly, this is achieved through partnership with various companies, local governing boards, grant appeals and access to a large group of willing volunteers that make up the Kiwanis Club of Warsaw and greater Indiana chapter. In practice, the club is always trying to help. “We try to find something in the community that needs doing and we go do it,” Molebash says. Volunteers are not only members of the Kiwanis of Warsaw but high school students who are a part of the Kiwanis key club, a youth outreach group for teens. Key clubs exist around the country and

reflect how Kiwanis aims to strengthen and improve communities. Another way in which Molebash, Andrews and Kiwanis of Warsaw help in the community is through partnership with companies that align with their goals. Every year around Christmas the club volunteers participate in Bell ringing for The Salvation Army. In addition to partnerships with companies, Kiwanis helps promote organizations that aim to help their community. As Kiwanis has been around since 1915, it precedes and has helped promote wonderfully beneficial organizations such as Riley Children’s Hospital. Riley has become what it is today with the support of Kiwanis. The club is currently working to open a new department within Riley that will specialize in helping women safely deliver their children. Kiwanis Club of Warsaw meets weekly for lunch on Thursday at the Connection Campus of the First United Methodist Church, 1692 W. Lake Street, Warsaw, IN. Lunch starts at 11:45 a.m. and the meeting concludes around 1 p.m. For further information, visit the Warsaw-Kiwanis International website warsawkiwanis.net and their Facebook @ KiwanisClubof Warsaw. For more information on how to get involved with this historic service organization contact Jim Molebash by phone 574-527-8190 or via email molebashj@yahoo.com.
